DRINKING WATER

Public transport is available to most tourist destinations in Namibia. In Namibia one drives on the left. There are bus services from Windhoek to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Vic Falls, Swakopmund, Harare, Lusaka and many other smaller busses which connect most of Namibian regions. Namibia’s main railway line runs from the South African border, connecting Windhoek to Swakopmund in the west and Tsumeb and Oshikango in the north. There is an extensive network of international and regional flights from Windhoek. Domestic charters to all destinations.

HEALTH No inoculations are necessary. Should one enter from a country in which yellow fever prevails, one should have proof of vaccination against such disease. Malaria-prophylaxis is recommended if traveling to far northern Namibia during summer.

Tap water is purified and safe to drink. Bottled water is available almost everywhere in the country as well.

Dolomite Camp is located in a previously restricted scenic area in the western region of Etosha National Park, rich in biodiversity due to the absence of mainstream tourism. The dolomite formations in the area give the camp its name and provide a lush vista. With no less than 15 waterholes, wildlife sightings are very common around the camp and provide excellent photography opportunities. Black and white Rhino have often been spotted at the Klip-pan waterhole. It is a must-see for botany enthusiasts. The competition is run with the aim of finding the best 101 landscape images from the past year, and publishing them in a coffee table book available for sale (including a free e-book). Chairman of the judges, Peter Eastway, says, “Landscape photographers are passionate about their art. For some, it’s the time spent in the landscape, waiting for the perfect light or an amazing sky. For others, it’s what they can conjure from their imagination without the restrictions of the natural world.” He believes, “The mark of a true landscape photographer is someone who has strong views for his or her own art, but is accepting and appreciative of other approaches as well.” The first category was based on a folio submission of at least four

The wheel story: JAMES SIDDALL on what's happening in the wonderful world of wheels... Flag-waving flagship The Lexus brand – which is one of the world's more covetable automotive nameplates – was launched in 1990 with the unveiling of the LS 400, which almost immediately put this then-new luxury marque on the map. And now the fifth-generation of this massively sophisticated super saloon has debuted at the North America International Auto Show in Detroit, so taking the Lexus brand into new, rarefied territory. “Not only will the LS symbolise the Lexus brand, it will become the definitive

new-generation luxury car, embodying Japanese tradition and culture,” says Toshio Asahi, LS Chief Engineer. “As such, it must go far beyond what the world expects from a luxury car.” It is longer and lower and yet more striking than its predecessor, while arresting aesthetics meet stellar sophistication – as well as levels of craftsmanship that have made the term “Lexus” rest so easily in the same sentence as “superlative.” Now we could pack the rest of this magazine telling you about the highlights of the new LS. It is a torque converter automatic, yet with shift times that rival those of dual-clutch transmissions. Meanwhile, the wide bandwidth afforded by the ten closely

spaced ratios is ideal for all forms of driving, helping provide an optimal gear for all conditions. “The LS is the flagship of the Lexus brand,” says Chief Designer Koichi Suga. “More than any other model, it embodies the history and image of Lexus and serves as a symbol for everything the brand stands for.” And with that we have to fully concur. Expect the new Lexus LS to make its local debut in the first quarter of 2018, with local specification details becoming available closer to the launch date.

Everything really does keep going right Can you believe it? It is now more than 50 years since the Toyota Corolla hit the market. This best-seller – actually the best-selling nameplate in automotive history – is now in its 11th generation. And it has just enjoyed a series of upgrades including exterior frontand rear-end refreshments, and enhanced interior modifications to give it a classier, crisper feel. The engine line-up, however, remains unchanged, and features a choice of a 1.4- litre D-4D turbodiesel, and three petrol engines: a 1.3-litre

Dual VVT-i unit, a 1.6-litre Dual VVT-i engine, and the 1.8-litre Dual VVT-i unit. Awesome ASX We have always had a bit of a soft spot for Mitsubishi's small ASX crossover – which has been refreshed for the 2017 model year with a range of enhancements inside and out. Also worth noting is the addition of a great value proposition in the guise of a new 2.0 MIVEC six-speed CVT derivative. As Nic Campbell, General Manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa,

says: “We have to address the current affordability needs of our customers. Today’s economy often forces buyers to opt for lower-spec vehicles, but our new ASX 2.0 GL CVT derivative offers the comfort and efficiency of Mitsubishi’s CVT transmission as well as its impressive standard specification in a truly attractive package.” In fact, the new Mitsubishi ASX line-up consists of five derivatives all featuring the frugal and highly reliable 2.0 MIVEC petrol engine. This engine is equipped with Mitsubishi’s Innovative Valve Timing

Electronic Control System (MIVEC) and multi-point injection, and produces 110kW at 6 000 rpm and 197Nm of torque at 4 200rpm. ere is a question for you. Given that BMW has a long and proud history of building rearwheel-drive vehicles, what do you think the result would be when they set their collective minds to building a front-wheel-drive machine? Mediocre? Middling? Or marvellous? Yes. You guessed right. It is the last. Marvellous – plus a whole raft of other synonyms (insert your own, and insert them you will once you have driven the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer).

Indeed, this car is absolutely everything that even the most ardent critic would expect from a BMW. And once again we will leave it to these clever Bavarians to niftily sum up this machine: “The launch of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer sees BMW bringing the functionality of space and comfort, combined with hallmark BMW dynamics, style and elegance, to the premium compact class.” Netso! As our Afrikaans friends and compatriots

would put it. Now just one area – we will get to the others in a minute – where the vehicle scores is its compact dimensions. Figure on a length of 4 342mm, a width of 1 800mm, and a height of 1 555mm. What this means in practice is that the 2 Series Active Tourer is especially well-suited to an urban environment where excessive size can be a mitigating factor. Yet its interior dimensions are deceptively large, and the versatile luggage compartment, whose capacity can be enlarged from 468 litres to a cavernous 1 510 litres, and the 40:20:40 split-folding rear backrest

fitted as standard, exemplify this machine's practicality. Flexibility is further enhanced by a sliding rear seat that allows legroom in the rear or the load compartment capacity to be increased as required. But that is not all, as they say in those infomercials. The rear backrest can be adjusted to offer either added comfort for the three rear seats or extra luggage space. And access to the luggage compartment is a user-friendly affair courtesy of a large, broad, wideopening tailgate. This also comes as standard with push-button automatic opening and closing or optional touchless gesture control. The driver and front passenger, meanwhile, enjoy a higher, more commanding seating position than in a normal sedan, while egress and ingress is a cinch. The abundance of storage facilities and the option of a fold-flat passenger seat backrest are just two more examples of the interior’s impressive flexibility and cleverly devised layout. And perhaps just as important is the

fact that the cabin has a light and spacious feel to it, with all surfaces horizontally structured in a cool, layered look. There is also the option of a large panoramic roof that lets light flood into the interior, and which is certainly one option worth exploring. So there you have it. This MPV – Multi Purpose Vehicle – is a clear asset to any busy lifestyle. But it is also far from being a clinically, coldly efficient machine. After all, it wears that iconic blueand-white roundel, and that means that when pushed it drives with engagement and entertainment, while ride quality is cosseting in daily use. Driving power comes from a range of three- and four-cylinder powerplants. Among them the punchy, economical three-cylinder (218i) and four-cylinder motors (220i, 220d and 225i) that form part of a new generation of engines. They are installed transversely, and boast a compact design along with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The new 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol unit, for one, sips just 5.1 litres of petrol

per 100km in the combined cycle, yet makes a healthy 100kW, while on the other hand there is the 225i Active Tourer. With its two-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol mill, it pushes out 170kW and 350Nm of torque, and turns in tidy performance. Figure on a top trot of 240km/h, and a nought-to-100km/h run in 6.6 seconds, which is all aided and abetted by the standard eight-speed Steptronic gearbox. And speaking of performance – and handling – the 2 Series Active Tourer boasts just the sort of driving experience that you would expect from this Bavarian brand. This is, at least in part, thanks to the newly developed chassis, comprising a single-joint spring strut axle at the front and a multi-link rear axle. The car's front-drive axle has also benefited from extensive fine-tuning, so among other things driver feedback is stellar. Then again, the 2 Series Active Tourer is stellar on every front from lavish equipment levels to high passive and active safety levels to its inherent, awesome practicality. This is something we can attest to having recently spent a week with one. But then given that it wears the hallowed BMW badge this should not come as too much of a surprise...

o say that BMW currently has a complete, comprehensive, and crushingly capable model range is a bit of an understatement. Rather like saying that Usain Bolt is a fairly swift jogger or that popcorn sales were brisk at the latest Star Wars movie. Take the BMW 3 Series – and frankly we would not mind taking one. Preferably home with us. This machine is arguably the undisputed ruler

among compact luxury sedans, while it also essentially established the segment as a whole. Drive a new 3 Series and you will be astounded at how seamlessly it mates that renowned Sheer Driving Pleasure with lashings of luxury. Impossible as it might sound, the 3 – right from the entry-level 318i through to the iconic M3 – just gets better with each incarnation. Go to the top of the Beamer range and you will encounter the new 7 Series. A car that mixes Sultan-like sybaritism with more than just a hint of driver involvement and engagement. Then, of course, there is the X5 which when it was launched around the turn of the century, essentially established a whole new class of car. And without even touching on the delights

and sheer ingenuity of the i8 hybrid or the all-electric i3, there is a new 5 Series waiting in the wings to be launched. In fact, come next issue we hope to bring you full details of the local media launch of this machine which promises a lot – but as with all BMWs it will almost certainly not just live up to its promise but exceed it. We cannot wait. The reason why we are here today, however, is to tell you about the BMW X1. Now this machine sits in one of the most hectically traded, hugely competitive vehicle segments of all, name the compact luxury SUV one. A segment in which new entrants seem to appear almost monthly. Yet – especially in its latest guise – it is the sort of vehicle that you really, really want in your garage. BMW itself speaks of “an urban all-rounder that delivers boundless driving pleasure.” And that, friends, is no mere marketing hype – as anyone who has spent time with the new, second-generation X1 will tell you.

Now the X1 essentially blazed a trail for this category of car, and in its latest incarnation offers yet more purposeful, engaging styling, a tech-rich interior of the sort that only the Bavarians can really pull off – and a range of new-generation, turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, including a threecylinder turbopetrol with the rest being four-cylinder units. Rather importantly, this baby also employs what its makers rightly term “an efficiency-optimised version of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheeldrive system.” This is mated to newly developed chassis technology that allows drivers to do what our parents warned us was impossible: namely have our cake and eat it. Indeed, the ride quality of the X1 is pliant, accommodating, calming, and well able to soak up bad roads and surface irregularities. Yet drive it with gusto, and its inherent sportiness becomes apparent. It is, after all, a BMW! As an added bonus, fuel consumption and emissions are slashed by up to 17 percent over its predecessor. Standard equipment is, of course, lavish, and both passive and active safety measures abound. Consider that the list includes air conditioning, an audio system with USB and AUXin sockets, and the iDrive operating system, whose 6.5-inch display is integrated into the instrument panel in freestanding monitor form. But should

you wish, you can further embellish your X1 with a host of options. These include full-LED headlights, Dynamic Damper Control, the BMW HeadUp Display and the Driving Assist Plus system – all of which you could feasibly live without, but all of which also elevate the X1 to the next level. Important, too, is that the newgeneration X1 is larger than the original car. Not only does this give it a more commanding presence, but with its height up by 53mm, interior space has gone from adequate to excellent. Consider, for instance, that the noticeably raised seating position – up by 36mm at the front, and 64mm at the rear – optimises both the passengers' and the driver's view over the road. Knee room in the rear has increased by 37mm in standard specification and by

up to 66 millimetres with the optionally adjustable rear seat, while the 505-litre boot capacity is 85 litres larger than that of its predecessor. Important for those who cart all the accoutrements that go with an energetic and full lifestyle. Fold down the standard-fitted 40:20:40 rear seat backrest, meanwhile, and load capacity jumps to up 1 550 litres. Output and fuel consumption from the range of powerplants available is excellent, and the various variants can be had with a six-speed manual, an eight-speed Steptronic unit, or a sixspeed Steptronic unit and to just dip into the model range and take an example of an X1 we have spent time with, the xDrive25i model uses a two-litre, fourcylinder, twin-turbo petrol motor to make 170kW and 350Nm from as little as 1 250rpm. This translates into a top speed of 235km/h, zero to 100km/h in a decidedly sporting 6.5 seconds, and a miserly fuel consumption in the region of 6.4 litres per 100km. But do you know what? Above all the X1 leaves one asking this question: has BMW achieved borderline perfection with its offerings? We like to think so...

t is no accident that Honda has a core of highly faithful buyers – many, even most, of whom are repeat customers. And many, even most, of whom would be hesitant to even consider buying into another brand. Nor is it a coincidence that Honda regularly tops quality surveys. All this and more – a lot more – ran through our minds during a week of road testing the all-new Honda Civic, notably in 1.5T Sport guise. It could not have been otherwise for there is an awful lot to like, even

love, about the 10th generation Civic. And we do mean a lot. The styling, for one, is striking, in fact more like retina-wrenching. Now it could look too busy and too fussy, but somehow Honda has slickly pulled it off, and it looks like nothing else on the road which is a good thing for those who do not celebrate anonymity. Indeed, this is a hugely futuristic shape, almost science-fiction-like, in fact, which is highlighted by the “bracketed” tail-light design with LED light bars on either side. Slickly modern renditions of Honda’s signature design cues are also evident throughout the Civic's

execution – including a solid wing face that spans the entire front width of the car, while incorporating the brand’s bold grille design, and the new slim headlight treatment. In addition, this machine is lower and longer than the previous Civic. In fact, the wheelbase has been increased by 30mm, and the total length by 109mm, while the height has been lowered by 20mm. As a result interior space is vastly improved, while it looks athletic and energetic. Rear-seat knee space, for instance, has increased by 55mm, along with further gains in shoulder room for the rear occupants. Boot capacity has

also improved by 20 percent. In a real-world application, this translates into a capacious cabin. Size-wise it is close to the discontinued and rather wonderful Accord, a car that the Civic has effectively taken over from, with the result that it now sits in the D-segment, alongside vehicles such as the VW Jetta. Build quality is absolutely and utterly top drawer, outside and in. In fact, it is right up there with any established prestige car brand you care to name. And speaking of the interior, it is an airy, uncluttered place to be, replete with top-grade, soft-touch materials and excellent ergonomics. There is also a new high-deck centre console that houses the likes of the new electric parking brake and brake hold function, while there are heated seats up front on the model tested. The sort of clever touches that you would expect from Honda abound. And just one of several Civic firsts included is Walk Away Auto Lock operated by the

smart key system, which is standard on the Sport and Executive models. The system automatically locks the car doors once the key is approximately 2.5 metres away from the vehicle, thus ensuring additional security and day-today convenience. Smart keyless entry is also standard on 1.5-litre Turbo models. Power in this model comes courtesy of a 1.5-litre VTEC turbopetrol motor. As with most new-generation forcedinduction motors, power delivery is smooth and seamless with 127kW on tap, and 220Nm of torque from 1 700rpm right through to 5 500rpm. Zero to 100km/h comes up in 8.2 seconds, topping out at 200km/h, while fuel consumption is a claimed and believable 5.9 litres per 100km. Safety is also well taken care of by the likes of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and six airbags, to but dip into this machine's potentially life-saving features. Now the fact that it uses a CVT gearbox might discourage some as these transmissions can occasionally be a little mediocre. But

the CVT fitted to all Civics – and there are four variants in the range, namely two 1.5T models, and two non-turbo 1.8 models – is simply one of the best of the breed we have yet encountered. Add in the fact that a remarkable five-year/200 000km warranty, and a five-year/90 000km service plan are part of the deal, and it is clear that if you are looking for a D-segment sedan with lashings of individuality there is little to match the Civic. This is a car you want to – really want to – test before making a purchasing decision. You need to trust us on this one...

Pick-up lines The hugely, highly anticipated Mitsubishi Triton not only meets expectations but exceeds them...

ometimes in this life – at the risk of getting a little philosophical – heightened expectations are met with a slight anticlimax when one meets the reality. But with the all-new Mitsubishi Triton the polar opposite has happened. And this vehicle – the fifth in the much-lauded Colt/Triton lineage – is frankly even better than we dared hope. Little wonder then that it is already establishing itself as a firm favourite in markets such as Australia, Brazil, Europe, and the Middle East. Now while we are not given to reciting swathes of the manufacturer's press

material, its makers nicely sum up this machine as: “The most advanced pick-up ever to be developed by Mitsubishi with its balanced combination of true SUV-like road manners with heavy-duty workhorse capabilities.” We couldn't have put it better ourselves. During the recent media launch in Gauteng the Triton ate up sealed-surface distances with all the sybaritism of a vehicle costing twice or thrice its price. Yet when pointed off-road, it almost laughingly chewed up hyper-challenging terrain of the sort that few of us are likely to subject our vehicles to in real life.

Now the Triton goes into the ring against formidable competition – yet it has the allure and capability to make a devastating argument for itself. At the moment the Triton is available only as a double cab. Four variants – including manuals and autos, and twoand four-wheel drives – can be had. All use the same powerplant, namely a brilliant new 2.4-litre turbodiesel with an extremely low compression ratio of 15:5:1. It is a free-revving mill this, with 133kW and 430Nm peaking at 2 500rpm. Fuel consumption is a claimed 7.6 litres per 100km in the combined cycle, while power delivery is smooth, refined, and linear.

As for transmissions, you can have your Triton with a six-speed manual or a five-speed auto. You can also opt for rear-wheel-drive only versions or versions using Mitsubishi's muchlauded – and rightly so – Super-Select II four-wheel-drive system. This allows shifts on the move, and drivers can choose between four driving modes including 4X2, 4X4 high-range – useful for slippery surfaces and gravel roads – and 4X4 low-range with centre diff locked. With the last engaged, the Triton would put many a main battle tank to shame, as we discovered during that hardcore off-roading. Yet on sealed surfaces it is positively “car-like,” a phrase that has become a bit of a cliché when describing many modern bakkies, but it is just that. This is important, because while in the fullness of time we can expect to see more variants in the Triton range, at the moment the four double cab models available are pitched at the lifestyle and leisure market. The cabin is a wonderful place to be, and Mitsubishi says it is designed to give the same levels of comfort and convenience as the Pajero – which is precisely what it does. Finishes are high quality, replete with easy-to-clean surfaces, while the deal includes a touchscreen infotainment system, keyless ignition, dual-zone climate control, reverse camera, electrically adjustable driver's chair. You get the drift.

Interior space is also noticeably up on the previous Triton's, and there has been a lot of thought to little details. Such as a rear bench angled by 25 degrees, so avoiding that perched, upright position that backseat passengers often suffer in double cabs. Meanwhile, a shorter wheelbase makes it more wieldy than before, while 4X4 versions have a 215mm ground clearance, and approach and departure angles of 28 and 22 degrees. But for some perhaps the most vital consideration will be that it is an attractive machine – far more so than the previous Triton whose styling had its critics. Indeed, for a lot of lifestyle-orientated buyers this will be a deal-clincher, and from its wrap-around headlights to its curved tailgate with integrated brake light, the Triton will please the faithful – and very likely win new converts too.

“From the onset, the brief to designers and engineers was to maintain the essence of the Triton, but also to improve on aspects of ride, handling and comfort to create a truly SUV-like experience from behind the wheel,” says Nic Campbell, General Manager at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa. “ The team has certainly complied and has earned the new Triton the signature of Sport Utility Truck among owners, dealers and within the company.” A five-year/90 000km service plan, and a three-year/100 000km warranty is all part of the deal.

IT Security Breaches There Should Be No Shame in Them

ne of the first steps to addressing a public health crisis is taking the shame out of it. This was

something that had to be learned during the early days of the AIDS crisis in the United States.

In many countries it appears that a similar stigma still exists in the area of IT security breaches; and the lack of disclosure contributes directly to a lack of understanding and action by businesses and government. Despite the fact that cybercrime is on the rise in South Africa, with R2.2 billion in losses annually according to SABRIC, those most affected by cybercrime are still reluctant to step forward. Businesses are expected to do everything they can to keep their customers data safe. With the variety of security tools out there, the general public see no excuse to let a breach happen. The stigma around getting hacked seems to follow the misconception among targets that they are the only ones to have experienced it. Highhumour A beggar knocks on the door of an inn known as St. George and the Dragon. The landlady answers. “Could you give a poor man something to eat?” asks the beggar, politely. “No!” yells the woman, slamming the door in his face. A man was driving along the highway, and saw a rabbit hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the rabbit, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of the car and was hit. The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road and got out to see what had become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit was dead. The driver felt so awful he began to cry. A woman driving down the highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong. “I feel terrible,” he explained. “I accidently hit this rabbit and killed it.” The woman told the man not to worry. She knew what to do. She went to her car trunk and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead rabbit, and sprayed the contents of the can onto the rabbit. Miraculously, the rabbit came to life, jumped up, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped down the road. 50 feet away the rabbit stopped, turned around, waved at the two again, hopped down the road another 50 feet, turned, waved, and hopped another 50 feet. The man was astonished. He couldn’t figure out what substance could be in the woman’s spray can! He ran over to the woman and demanded, ” What was in your spray can? What did you spray onto that rabbit?” The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said: ” Hare Spray Restores Life to Dead Hare. Adds Permanent Wave.” 108 |

Asset managers need to reinvent themselves in a changed world Bonds are currently Prescient’s preferred asset class

Bastian Teichgreeber, Portfolio Manager and Analyst responsible for positive return and balanced mandates at Prescient Investment Management, commented that if asset managers stick to static asset allocation approaches that worked in the past, they risk falling behind in future. “For example, we need to deal with the fact that the risk free rate of return might turn negative and that expected returns on developed market government bonds are below zero. There are also the implications of ever lower expected returns from equities and volatile currency movements.” “It’s crucial to understand the environment we’re operating in. Aside from low real returns, uncertainty has escalated and correlations are more unstable.” Teichgreeber said that within Prescient’s asset allocation process, bonds are currently the preferred asset class. The fund manager also currently favours cash over equities. “Equities are expensive and we are in the later stage of the global business cycle. Local bonds have priced in a lot of risks to materialise, like the Federal Reserve hiking US interest rates, or South Africa being downgraded”. He added that gross domestic product growth is correlated with equity returns, which are higher in periods of strong nominal GDP expansion. Quantitative easing had struggled to create economic growth or inflation, instead pushing up asset prices and creating asset price inflation.

Bastian Teichgreeber joined Prescient Investment Management in August 2015 as a Portfolio Manager and Analyst responsible for Positive Return and Balanced Mandates. He has been in the industry for 10 years and during this tenure, has held the position of portfolio manager internationally, developing actively managed investment strategies for fixed income and equity indices as well as implementing optimal fixed income allocations within multi asset funds by managing duration, credit risk, equity beta and currency exposure interdependently. In 2007, Bastian obtained a BA with Honours in Banking and Financial Management from the University of Cooperative Education in Ravensberg, Germany. In 2009, he obtained an MSc in Banking and Financial Management from the University of Liechtenstein. He is a CFA charter holder since 2010 and completed his FRM (financial risk manager) in 2012.

The intention behind quantitative easing was to kick-start a struggling economy, providing easy money to encourage companies to invest and consumers to spend, with the result that growth and inflation eventually pick up again. “However, in the absence of fiscal stimulus and structural reforms, it’s been found that monetary policy alone can’t succeed,” Teichgreeber said. “The problem over the last few years is that companies have not invested due to pessimism about the future, while consumers have saved more to make up for the loss in interest. Investors are pushed up the risk curve in order to achieve a predetermined return target.” With volatility and uncertainty likely to continue, Prescient currently believes that a defensive asset allocation strategy is more promising than an aggressive allocation. Teichgreeber said the Prescient Positive Return Fund is ideally suited to current market conditions. Regulation 28 compliant, the fund aims at generating consistent positive returns, while safeguarding the portfolio from downside risk. The fund aims to protect capital over a 12-month rolling basis and has been successful in this regard, having never lost money over any rolling 12-month period. It invests in cash, capital market instruments, and equities with an active asset allocation overlay. The equity component of the fund is protected to reduce the risk of capital loss. “The portfolio adopts an innovative asset allocation approach, structured to optimise returns in positive market cycles and to protect capital in negative periods,” said Teichgreeber.

NWRâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S OKAUKUEJO GENERATES N$ 100 MILLION IN REVENUE In what was seen as a major milestone in the life of the biggest and oldest resort within the Etosha National Park, Okaukuejo generated a revenue of N$ 100 million during the financial year, 1 November 2015 to 31 October 2016 which translated to an overall revenue increase of 16% compared to the previous financial year. This milestone was credited to the popularity of the resort, which has an annual average occupancy of over 80%. One of its draw cards is the large, floodlit

waterhole, which receives exceedingly regular visits from a wide diversity of wildlife. This includes herds of antelopes, family groups of elephant, some black rhinos, as well as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;king of the jungleâ&#x20AC;? himself. When asked what, her thoughts were about this great achievement, Katriena Hoeses, Okaukuejoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Resort Manager said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;reaching such a milestone cannot be attributed to her team only. At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.
