Dear Friends of Air Namibia, Again it is with renewed pleasure, that we prepare a brief overview of what has been happening at the national carrier over the past month. We understand that with half the year now passed and being in the throes of winter, there is at a rudimentary level a need to reflect, indeed to take stock of our journey thus far. We are excited to share some key developments with you. We have come to realize that principally we need to revamp and further hone our communication methods and skills. To this end, we believe that every comment received (both negative and positive) regarding your travel experience on board one of our aircraft, is an opportunity for us to deliver on our promise - that on each and every flight your safety, comfort and well-being is of primary importance to us. We will thus be engaging passengers on each stage of the passenger journey and look forward to putting in place more effect measures of getting feedback from you, our valued passengers, as we make improvements where necessary. We will also be forging ahead with a more robust Social Media presence, to get a sense of the expectations of a wide spectrum of the passengers traveling with Air Namibia.

Adv. Mandi E.P. Samson Acting Managing Director

Having spoken about what is work still in progress, now a brief note on that which has been finalized. There has been a lot of work being done behind the scenes, as we

We are excited to share some key developments with you

work towards the roll out of some key projects before the end of the first quarter of the financial year. The list is quite exciting and includes projects critical to our business such as aligning the staffing requirements with the network we currently operate this will ensure that the recent disappointment some of our passengers had to face of cancelled flights due to crew shortage will not be repeated. Further also, with improvements in the systems we use with the acquiring of cutting edge technology, we are sure that this will mean greater efficiency when we are entrusted with making your travel bookings. Finally, we have also just completed a network study which is determining the routes to be flown by Air Namibia. There is still however much more work to be done and we will share additional information with you at the material time.

The ‘route/resort’ focus for the month of June is putting the spotlight on Air Namibia’s route to Walvis Bay, which means that during this month there will be special fares to and from Walvis Bay. The coastal part of Namibia has been known to leave visitors in awe of the majestic sight of the oldest desert in the world, meeting up with the ocean. Awe-inspiring, beautiful, an amazing sight - indeed I will say no more. The resort which is promoted this month is Terrace Bay (from the stable of Namibia Wildlife Resorts). Terrace Bay is an angler’s paradise offering an exceptional coastal experience inside the famous Skeleton Coast Park in Northwest Namibia. Located on the coast, the camp set in an undisturbed and peaceful spot, surrounded by the majestic dunes of the northern Namib Desert. You can easily venture into the nearby Uniab River Delta, for a glimpse into Terrace Bay’s wildlife diaspora. You can hike, bird watch, spot game or witness breath-taking sunsets from atop the dunes. Finally, a note on our safety culture we reiterate our commitment to the highest safety standards and are continually engaged in training to ensure that our employees can meet the highest performance standards of their peers. The next few months will be a busy time as the entire organization engages in training on Safety Management Systems (SMS), which is now an industry norm and mandatory for all airlines.

“Again, thank you for choosing Air Namibia and we look forward to welcoming you onboard again! “ |5

Standard Bank ready to support the mining sector Standard Bank has a rich pedigree in the mining industry. As a Bank well-versed in serving the mining sector in Africa, Standard Bank has been framing its products to ensure that the country has more bankable projects that can take the country to new economic heights. The Bank has been ready to finance large-scale mining projects, understanding that the projects require big chunks of financing. One recent key highlight has been the co-financing of Debmarine Namibia’s latest sampling and exploration vessel (approximately N$1.8 billion). “Like many large investment banks, we work with the government, corporates and financial clients in multiple sectors and geographies. Unlike most, we are first and foremost Namibian; we have a long, proud history that gives us a unique depth of expertise and breadth of footprint. We are set apart by our scale, by the strength of our regional and international connections, and by our ability to innovate. Our track record shows our success in building businesses across Namibia, especially in natural resources, mining, power and infrastructure sectors, ” thus Standard Bank’s Head of Client Coverage in Corporate and Investment Banking Division, Adri Spangenberg.

tbwa.com.na

While this year may be a challenging one for the global mining industry, mining prospects remain Standard Bank’s strength and passion for Africa as a region. And so when clients speak with Standard Bank, they are actually having a conversation with an entire regional regional backbone. We are always ready to finance business ventures with an established business plan and viable outlook. Exploration projects, however, have a very unique business structure in that income streams tend to be highly speculative and dependent on what’s in the ground and the interested extraction counterparty. For this reason, most exploration projects are funded by owner equity or by sizeable minerals extraction firms. Mining is a risky business that is influenced by several factors, including uncertainties in commodity prices on the world markets. However in terms of the outlook, commodity prices are not anticipated to exhibit material improvement, impacting on sector valuations and the ability to raise financing. But Standard Bank Group research shows that African mining remains underexplored.

122 |

Adri Spangenberg, Head: Client Coverage, Standard Bank Corporate and Investment Banking

In 2013, African exploration accounted for 17% of the worldwide exploration budget despite the fact that the continent holds more than 30% of the world’s mineral resources. So amid a more sober outlook, the prospects for mining in Africa remain essentially intact over the medium term. And although cautious, our appetite for mining projects is quite strong. What financing products is Standard Bank offering to medium and large scale exploration and mining firms? We offer solutions in Advisory, Capital Markets, Debt and Transactional Services. All these capabilities bring together complementary skills from corporate finance and balance sheet banking to geology and mining engineering. And with our global footprint, our transactional banking network is able to provide our clients with a more seamless solution for their day-to-day operations.

Debmarine Namibia’s latest sampling and exploration vessel (approximately N$1.8 billion) financed by Standard Bank Namibia

How do you convince a local miner to access project financing from your Bank, other than foreign financial institutions, understanding that it is always cheaper to borrow from Banks in foreign countries where interest rates are relatively lower? This question symbolises our strength as a regional bank. We are able to finance miners on both local and foreign exchange expenditure needs within our integrated Group structure. How will Standard Bank contribute to the growth of the mining sector in Namibia? Because of our history as a mining bank and our enduring expertise in this sector, we work to understand our clients‘ individual requirements. We coordinate and execute our clients’ financing and banking requirements across Africa and emerging global markets. Our highly regarded commodity and currency trading desks offer 24-hour trading capabilities to support price-risk management and hedging strategies. In addition, we carry out in-depth analyses of commodity trends and stay on top of the latest developments in the mining and metals industry. We continue to play a leading role in arranging facilities for many of the most significant mining projects in Africa and other key emerging markets. Our comprehensive suite of financing and advisory solutions for the mining and metals sector includes: • Project finance • Corporate finance advisory solutions

• Working capital facilities • Bridging finance • Acquisition finance • Inventory financing • Structured trade and commodity finance • Commodity price risk management solutions • Foreign exchange and interest rate hedging • Global transactional banking services In the meantime, we continue to participate in dialogues that promote sustainable business and growth in the mining sector. Standard Bank Namibia is confident that the mining sector promises positive growth opportunities for the country, despite a downturn in the global mining industry. Mining prospects, however, look bright for Namibia as the country is currently the world’s fourth largest producer of uranium and is expected to overtake Niger and Australia by 2017 through the commencement of the Husab mine production. As Standard Bank, our eminence talks to financing power and infrastructure, mining and metals, oil and gas, and other key sectors such as fast-moving consumable goods, real estate and telecommunication. As the world looks to emerging markets to power growth, Namibia is taking its rightful place at the heart of this.

Training was no longer a career option - she couldn’t travel far - so she took on whatever work was available to keep the family’s heads above water: “I was a host for an events company, managed a coffee shop, and was a very good waitress after all those years in training and development!” But life has a way of opening doors, and one day, while serving coffee, Melanie bumped into an old high school teacher: “He was opening a restaurant, and would I be willing to assist with staff training?” Absolutely, but when Melanie visited the site, she realized this venture needed more than just training: “His ideas for the interior were limited, and I know that a successful eatery may be dependent on great food, service and atmosphere… but it needs to His

Melanie gave some examples: “We worked in the South and did extensive research, so much so that we put in a proposal and raised finances to publish a book which tells the stories/ legends of the local Bondelswart and Rooinasie Nama people – it’s called

development, then train Namibians to produce those products. This not only builds an individual’s confidence, but provides valuable skills. We’ve even assisted in start-up enterprises. One of our projects required extensive framing – we contracted a local person to assist, and when that project was completed, he had new skills and could start his own framing business. Namibian shopping malls import Xmas décor – not only does it not celebrate the essence of Christmas, but it’s “not Namibian”. Last year, we approached two malls with our Local and Lekker Christmas concept. The result was magic, with over 40 local Namibians employed for about five months. That is bringing work to Namibia.

What have we learned? This: You can teach skills but you cannot teach passion and attitude; at the end of the day, passion and attitude is the magic potion. Life owes nobody anything – each and everyone needs to take responsibility for themselves, and create their own opportunities. And this: Real job creation is not about moving work around, but about seeing new opportunities, pursuing them with passion and, very importantly, executing it extremely successfully.

Godafoss This is the famous Godafoss in wintertime where I spent 10 days. Clear blue-green water and ice everywhere. In winter, particularly on snowy conditions, the bottom shoots of Godafoss are not easy, so the picture was taken from the top. It was my idea to take this image to the given conditions that evening. So we climbed 10 meters down on the snowy ground to get there and did it. It was cloudy, nearly no wind and so the spray of the waterfall was very low. When there is a lot of spray you cannot do a longtime exposure because the lens will get wet and the picture is not usable. So for this kind of picture the conditions were great. I chose an exposure time of 25s to get the smooth effect on the water. Copyright: ŠMarkus Van Hauten, Germany, Winner, Open Competition, Panoramic, 2016 Sony World Photography Awards

T

he 2016 Sony World Photography Awards, the world’s biggest photography competition created by the World Photography Organisation, has announced the winners of its Open and Youth competitions. A recordbreaking 230,103 photographs from 186 countries were entered into the awards’ three competitions (Professional, Open and Youth) and the ten Open and three Youth winners were selected from a total of 103,005 entries. Photographers of all abilities can enter the ten Open categories - judged on a single image - and young photographers aged 12-19 may enter the three Youth categories. Scott Gray, CEO, World Photography Organisation and organiser of the awards comments: “Nurturing and supporting photographers is at the heart of the Sony World Photography Awards. Nowhere is this more clear than in the Open and Youth competitions which each focus on identifying and promoting amateur and enthusiast photographers.” Each winning image was chosen as the single best shot in its category and was judged by an expert panel chaired by Jael Marschner, former picture editor Time Out London / Sunday Times Travel. As Marschner said, “The quality of photography was outstanding…

32 |

Judging such remarkable photographs against each other was a wonderful yet almost impossible task. Hopefully you will enjoy the winners’ work as much as I have.”

Planned Obsolescence I shot the subject last summer in Torrevieja (Spain). One day I went to take photos at sunrise and when I came back home I saw the first swimmers at morning. The woman captured my attention because she seemed recently arrived from the 60’s and then I thought the history between them and in the metaphor with planned obsolescence. It is the result of 5 blended photos and shadows adjustments to get more realism. The old woman in foreground in very shocking for her pose and her gaze to spectator. Church on the fields of Soröko Polje Image Description: It all happened on a sleepy Monday autumn morning in the beginning of November. I was driving towards Kranj, the capital of Gorenjska region in the Slovenian Alps, when I suddenly coughed a marvellous sight of haze game in the fields rushing by the car window. I decided to abandon Kranj and the nervous drivers and heading to ämarjetna gora. The sight in front of me was simply overwhelming. I cut off the civilization and plunged into the silence light of the rising sun. The rays were shining through the morning haze in Soröko polje for a timeless and graceful shot captured on my camera. Splashing Birds Two birds were sipping water on the bank, unaware of the coming crashing waves! My category winning image is all about knowing what is going to happen. This is because if we could not see what was coming, one cannot take such an action scene in time no matter how fast your camera is. By using my street photography skill and observing each moving element in the scene, I could roughly see what was coming and was able to prepare my shot and capture the right moment at its peak. This way, the power of the scene and expression of the subjects will be most impactful and can, therefore, connect to audiences. Sarah Sarah, my sister, December 28th, 2015. After moving to a university across the country, I understood that Iíd miss my family; my mother and father, and especially my sister. Like so many millions of other young adults around me, I left my family and my home this year for the first time, and in an instant, they were no longer a daily part of my life. I wanted to somehow speak to the mixed feelings I was experiencing; excitement, for the life I was about to begin, and nostalgia, for the one I was leaving behind. Traveling back to Maine for a short time allowed me to create this somewhat spontaneous image of my sister, giving me the opportunity to express this change in the best way I knew how. It’s the

generation game The Tamasa Wine Route takes us once again to Muldersvlei, this time to the family home of the Myburghs - De Meye Wines; the farm and winery is named after the De Meye river in Holland, which was the birthplace of the first Myburgh, who came to farm in South Africa in 1665 - one hundred hectares of vines, lavendar and tranquility. Philip Myburgh and Marcus Milner talk to Flamingo magazine about time spent in the area. By: Phil Ruimte Photographs by: Mark Pettipher.

I

t’s a bit of a windy day and autumn has brought a definite bite to the air. Heading out from Stellenbosh on the R44, one takes a left turn off it and meander down what can only be described as a country lane through Elsenburg, then on over a railway crossing and just before the Old Paarl Road, hang a right - there is a wine route sign marking the entrance to the estate - on the left are vineyards and right an open pasture. Your drive down a tree lined farm road which brings you to the wine tasting room and cellar. I’m met by Philip Myburgh, the estates’ current owner and general manager, casually dressed, relaxed and slightly reserved. There is an underlying confidence though; he knows that this boutique winery produces excellent wines, a tradition that has been carried out for generations. Five generations, in fact “Fifthgeneration to be farming in the area”, qualifies Philip. The original farm Joostenberg, was where Philip’s father grew up and is where the bulk of vineyards are that

makes up part of the original farm. Where we are sitting - in the wine tasting room - is the newest acquisition, bought in 1980. Although the farm covers some one hundred hectares, a little under forty are under vines, mostly traditionally trellised, but there is a single block of Chenin Blanc of just on three hectares, planted some 40 years ago which are bush vines. These were planted in 1978 and classified in 2015 as a single vineyard; the description appears on the label. As with all viticulturists, Marcus Milner - wine maker - places great importance on the terrior. “De Meye farm has a variety of soil types and the vineyards are planted on rich, fertile soil, which are southeast facing, and enjoys a cool westerly wind during the ripening period months, ensuring healthy, ripe, and balanced berries.” Philip goes on to say, “the vines grown on the De Meye farm have been carefully selected to suit its unique terroir. The current vineyards are planted with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz

| 41

for the red wines and rosé, as well as Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc as our white varieties.” Marcus is satisfied with the farm’s average annual harvest yield and is happy to be producing 150,000 to 180,000 bottles of wine a year. “We are faced, as are many of the boutique wineries, with the issue of not being able to sell enough wine at a high price; we just don’t have the economies of scale, so we are forced to sell at prices that are dictated to us by market conditions and demand. We are however fortunate to have the reputation of excellent wine and so can charge slightly more for our product”, says Philip. “We should be doubling our production, and certainly we could yield more, but our tanks restrict us.” Marcus, seventeen years as wine maker to the De Meye wine farm, is proud of the fact that all the grapes harvested on the farm are used in their wine making - none are brought in from other vineyards. Whilst the De Meye wine farm is not classified as an estate, they adhere to the rules that govern farms as being labeled an estate. Both Philip and Marcus are content with the bush vine Chenin Blanc block, even though its yield has dropped, they feel that the 40 year old vineyard is going to grow in value, the three hectares can produce 22 - 25 tonnes of grapes. This labour intensive vineyard is more expensive to maintain, but it is producing a legacy wine, which is reflected in its price - it does pay for itself; the wine sells extremely well, as is evident from the sales in the farm Restaurant.

Wine making - proudly local De Meye is proudly South African and are honoured to be part of the South African wine industry. “We continually strive towards producing wines of distinction and excellence that has characterised the wines from Stellenbosch and specifically our privately owned wine farms, which, undoubtedly, are the heartbeat of this magnificent region,” says

42 |

Philip. “Marcus employs New World winemaking techniques, whilst at the same time pays credit to the unique terroir of our region.” “The emphasis is on producing personal, hand crafted, elegant and well balanced wines, which appeal to the local as well as the international palate. Our red wines mainly mature in high quality French oak barrels, which adds a subtle wooden note, whilst ensuring that the right balance and an expression of true grape character is kept at all times. For the white wines and our blanc de noir rosé, we choose steal tanks in the process, to add some fresher and lighter wines to the portfolio too,” adds Marcus.

Sustainability “At the heart of De Meye’s business mission lies sustainability. Integrity as well as respect for the environment are of greatest importance to us.” enthuses Philip, “We aim to make great wine, as naturally as possible, and therefore refrain as much as possible from using any preemergent herbicides or insecticides, with only minimal interference in the cellar,” adds Marcus. “We are a certified member of Sustainable Wine South Africa (SWSA), and fully agree with their credo that “it’s not about making wine better, it’s about making better wine.”

The Table Restaurant “In May 2010, we also ventured into hospitality; our exquisite little restaurant, ‘The Table at De Meye’ started by family friends Russel Wasserfel and Comilla Comins, enjoys great recognition amongst food lovers and critiques, nation-wide and internationally. The restaurant is now owned and run by chef Jessica Shepherd and her husband Luke Grant, who bought it three years ago,” says Philip. “You do need to book, the concept is simple - you get a three course meal - the menu changes each week, and there is a set price. Vegetables and fare

Philip is the owner and general manager of De Meye. He spent his childhood on the farm, growing up amongst cows, fruits and grapes. After some college- and overseas experiences, he decided to join his father Jan Myburgh, in his quest to develop the business and build their own winery and cellar on the farm. Having worked on De Meye for many years now, Philip holds extensive experience in the wine industry, as well as the day-to-day management of the business. He really is the humble soul of the house and makes sure the enterprise is run with authenticity, and everyone gets treated with integrity. Besides work, Philip likes to swim, bike and run, and chances are great you will find him jogging through the vineyards after office hours with his dog, the Ridgeback Sally. He furthermore enjoys road-tripping and travelling through SA and overseas, as much as just relaxing and enjoying a good meal with friends and a nice glass of wine.

are seasonal and Jessica has a small vegetable garden, which she uses for the bulk of her fresh produce.” Jessica adds, “The Table is the expression of a love of good food, fantastic produce and wonderful company. It’s about the simple pleasures of sitting down to a beautifully cooked meal with family and friends, whilst enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of our hidden-away country estate. The food is served and brought in dishes and platters where guests serve themselves.

You will find that our location’s atmosphere adapts according to the season. In the summer, guests are able to experience long, lazy lunches on the lawns under shady oak trees, whilst chatting, laughing, and drinking wine. In the winter, our warming, delicious, home cooked winter meals await you, served in our two cozy little restaurant spaces in the farm’s historic buildings, next to a fire place.”

Organic Lavender oil De Meye was one of the first wine farms in South Africa to produce lavender essential oil. Isabella Lavender Oil is named after Philip Myburgh’s mother, who lives on the farm. The Lavender grown at De Meye is Lavandula Intermedia, also called Provence Lavender. “Since 2000, we have always distilled a little Lavender for oil. The Isabella oil is made and sold in small quantities on the farm and is available from a few selected outlets in the Stellenbosch and Boland area; also its a nice product,” says Philip, “You could make money, assuming that you have enough tonnage. It is produced organically and the utmost care is taken to ensure the highest quality of natural lavender oil, but what I really like about it, you can post it to a customer,” continues Philip. “I thought it is a good combination product, to sell to those people who come to visit here; there is also the idea that we will not only make oil but also a range of products, such as shampoos and soaps, but not just yet. It’s also a great value add to our wedding venue contribution, and we are going to be replanting and extending the acreage, this along with a guest house that we are planning. We believe that Lavender products will be an area in which we can expand with relative little investment.” concludes Philip.

Marcus lives on his family’s neighbouring farm Natter Vallei, just a few kilometers away. He is old school friends with Philip, and just like in former days, he rides his bicylce to work and adds an extra loop on the way home whenever he can. He truly is an honest, old-fashioned two-wheeler enthusiast, a real non-fussy kind of type, and his (arguably) lack of taste in fashion is greatly outweighed by his excellent palate and taste for fine wines! After having made wine at Warwick for nine years, and some harvests spent in France and the USA, Marcus joined De Meye in 1999 and has been an established team member ever since. The South African of English descent, with a distinctive British accent (and actually some aristocratic blood), definitely brings very unique character, talent and expertise to the table and into the glass. Watch out for this guy at the next wine show or tasting. Amongst all the fancy talk and glitter, you’ll enjoy his take on things. Marcus is keeping it real. Or as the Brit would say: “real, indeed”.

The wheel story:

New Models round up JAMES SIDDALL on what's happening in the wonderful world of wheels...

Big, brilliant Benz Mercedes calls the new GLS nothing less than “the S-Class of SUVs.” And that pretty much nails it. This big Benz builds on the success of its predecessor, the GL, and is laden with luxury, safety systems, high-tech, and formidable performance on- and offroad. It is also billed as “the only fullfledged seven-seater in the European premium SUV segment,” and I for one

51 |

cannot think of many better ways to travel across any sort of terrain. Just some features from an encyclopaedic list include the latest Airmatic air suspension, a new ninespeed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, and the LED Intelligent Light System, as well as safety systems such as Collision Prevention Assist Plus, and Attention Assist. There is also a vast array of optional extras to choose from.

Driving power comes from a range of three units. There is the GLS 500 4Matic making 335kW (15kW more than its predecessor) and 700Nm from its biturbo V8 engine. There is the rangetopping, all-conquering Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4Matic making 430kW (20kW more than its predecessor) and 760Nm. And there is the turbodiesel GLS 350d 4Matic good for 190kW and 620Nm.We want one, we really do.

Is fantastic The new Lexus IS sports sedan looks like it is going to give the competition something to worry about – as evidenced during its recent unveiling at the Beijing Motor Show. Styling is retina-swivelling, and includes new headlamps, big air intakes in the front bumper, and an evolution of the well-known signature Lexus spindle grille. Inside, you get the likes of a new multimedia screen that is up from seven to 10.3 inches in size, and a “refined,” as Lexus terms it, audio and ventilation control panel, among other upgrades. Power comes from a two-litre, twinscroll turbocharged four-cylinder unit in the IS 200t, and a beefy 3.5-litre V6 in the IS 350. Expect as standard the stellar levels of quality and refinement that Lexus has so justly become renowned for. The new IS should hit our part of the world in the fourth quarter of this year, with local specification still to be announced.

Brimming with brio

Brake escape

Honda's peppy little Brio hatchback and sedan has just had a handy update, including redesigned front ends featuring a bolder grille and new headlights, while the interiors have been subtly reworked, too. Bluetooth connectivity is now standard, and as before driving force comes from a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder motor good for 65kW and 109Nm. Power is to the front wheels via a fivespeed manual or optional five-speed auto 'box.

The loveable, mildly addictive Toyota 86 has been turned into an eye-catching two-door shooting brake that is not only aesthetically cool but practical, too. The fully functioning, Australiandesigned concept was recently revealed in Sydney by Toyota 86 global Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada, and the 86 faithful are loving it. Sadly there does not seem much chance that this concept car will go into mass production. Still, hope springs eternal...

Looking smart

Up! Up! And away! Volkswagen’s diminutive up! is – in my humble opinion – the champ of the small car sector. And now it has just become distinctly more desirable with the addition of two extra doors, and two new derivatives, the cross up! and the colour up! Since its local launch in February 2015, the up! has only been available as a threedoor model. That configuration

is still available, and customers can get a three-door or a five-door in take up! and move up! varieties. But now they can also avail themselves of the cross up! – with chunky, SUVlike styling –

Say “yo!” – or just “hello,” if you will – to the new smart, with the rear engine concept now being offered in both two-seater smart fortwo guise, and four-seater smart forfour guise. Power to this snappy little city car comes from a three-cylinder, onelitre motor good for 52kW and 91Nm, with power running through a fivespeed manual 'box, and as always its compact, urban-friendly dimensions are retained, while safety features – as with any Mercedes-Benz product – take a front seat. What's more, advanced assistance systems of the sort that are generally the preserve of way bigger cars are present and correct, including crosswind

and the colour up! This flagship model is loaded with kit, including a quartet of airbags, front electric windows, and 17-inch alloys, finished in Fortana red or Sandstorm yellow. As before, driving force comes from a peppy one-litre, three-cylinder unit good for 55kW and 95Nm.

assist (standard), forward collision warning (optional), and Lane Keeping Assist (optional). Equipment levels are really good, and rise according to which of the three models you opt for, namely passion, prime or proxy. But even entry-level models get the likes of LED daytime driving lights, central locking, cruise control, and

cancel out the inertia force of each other, resulting in less vibration and superb rotational balance which provides a smooth feel even at high revs. And mated with the Boxer engine is Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system, which has helped garner these machines a fan base second to none. Incidentally, Subaru is one of only two car manufacturers who today equip vehicles with the Boxer engine. The other is Porsche.

ESP with crosswind stabilisation. Meanwhile, come July this year the smart forfour will be available with a 66kW, turbocharged motor mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Boxer in the ring It is a hearty “happy birthday” to the iconic Subaru “Boxer” engine. This horizontally opposed powerplant was first introduced on the Subaru 1000 compact passenger car back in May 1966.

54 |

Today all Subarus sold in our part of the world come with Boxer engines, and over the past half century some 16 million of these motors have been produced. To get a bit technical, the Boxer engine is so called because the movement of the engine’s pistons resembles the movement of a boxer’s fists. In the horizontally-opposed design of the Boxer engine, the pistons face each other in a side-to-side symmetrical layout. The opposing pistons work to

Q

uite simply there is no automotive brand like Ferrari. Indeed, the very mention of the word “Ferrari” is enough to stir an atavistic reaction in almost anybody – and never mind petrol heads. Why is not terribly hard to understand. Now a background to or history of this hallowed brand is entirely out of the scope of a comparatively short piece such as this. Instead let it be said that Ferraris – and I speak specifically of the new 488 GTB, successor to the much-vaunted 458, but it goes for all models in this Italian legend's range – are fast. Ferociously fast. So fast that driving one at full chat makes most other performance cars you might have experienced seem, well, mildly pedestrian. This is hardly surprising. The 488 GTB, for instance, rocks an all-new 3 902cc V8 turbo powerplant pumping out 492kW at a howling 8 000rpm, and 760Nm at 3 000rpm. That is enough to catapult it from standstill to 100km/h in three seconds flat. Yes, three seconds, which in practice is even yet insanely faster than it sounds in theory. Top speed is over 330km/h. What is more astounding is that if you have enough

58 |

space to try it out, it is guaranteed to rocket from zero to 200km/h in just 8.3 seconds. All the while singing a mechanical opera in what vies for the most magnificent soundtrack in the motoring realm. It is a remarkable power plant this. In fact, it is probably one of the alltime great engines, and turbo-lag is not just minimal but utterly non-existent, an important fact bearing in mind that in the past Ferraris have, with some notable exceptions, been naturally aspirated. There do exist some purists who spurn turbocharging for reasons including a lack of tactility, turbolag, and dampened acoustics. But they clearly have not experienced this engine. Yet there is more – far more – to this Maranello missile – than formidable firepower. The 488 GTB is beautifully balanced, intuitive, and alive, with massive attention having gone into its aerodynamics, which means it is not only slipperier than ever, but generates 50 percent more downforce. And you virtually drive it by telepathy, as I discovered recently at Red Star Raceway in Gauteng, when Scuderia

South Africa – the official Ferrari dealer – hosted a Passione Ferrari track event for a handful of us motoring writers. Besides fine Italian fare and even finer, no the finest, Italian metal, official Ferrari driving instructors, termed Corso Pilota, flown out from Italy, were on hand to advise and

instruct. And advise and instruct they did, sitting in the passenger seat of the 488 GTB while we arched around the track, realising yet again why the very word “Ferrari” has unmatched and unrivalled halo status. Now crystal-balling – that is, making lofty future predictions – is always fraught with danger. But I think it is safe to say that the 488 will be hailed by future generations as one of the great Ferraris. Then there is the California T, a car that I have driven on the road but never the track, so it was rewarding to spend raceway time with what is essentially the “entry-level” Ferrari, if you will pardon the misnomer. Now the Cali T is a far more involving, intoxicating experience than its tamer, naturally aspirated predecessor. And this 2+2 machine, with its retractable hardtop, uses essentially the same engine as the 488 GTB. Except it turns in slightly less astounding figures. If you can call 412kW and 755Nm “less astounding.” Top trot is 316km/h, with a zero-to100km/h time of 3.6 seconds. Entry into the world of the Prancing Horse doesn't come cheap. The California T has a base price of

N$4 335 000. The 488 GTB? Try N$4 990 000. Meanwhile, as you read this, the 488 Spider was recently introduced to our part of the world. This is a machine that promises to be yet more desirable than its fixed-head counterpart, for reasons including the fact that its folding hardtop allows you

to revel in those sublime acoustics all the better. Plus, of course, historically speaking open-top Ferraris have always had a resale edge on their fixed-head counterparts, with these cars having a high investment factor. And for the 488 Spider you can expect to pay N$5 594 000.

Desert island dreaming Mozambique’s Quilalea Private Island is just that. So private, you feel as if you’re the only person on that planet By: The Roving Ambassador Photographs supplied

I

t’s sometimes astonishing that an island destination can match up to the overly romanticised mental picture harboured by a stressed city-dweller, but at Quilalea, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. In all likelihood, that’s what wooed South African businessman Tokyo Sexwale to buy this enchanting water-fringed corner of Mocambique. Who could blame him?

One of the properties of Azura Boutique Retreats, Azura Quilalea Private Island is set in the Quirimbas Archipelago, off the coast of Northern Mocambique. You’ll reach it by helicopter from Pemba. There it lies, the still, quiet sea, the endless stretch of white beach, and embedded into the landscape, the lodge and villas of Quilalea.

For divers and snorkelers, this location is beyond exquisite, and the sea yields everything glorious from turtles to a Technicolour assortment of reef fish. Professionalism abounds, and guests are under the care - and even tuition - of the resident scuba team and management (professional underwater photographers) as you venture out to the numerous dive sites. One of the

| 61

delights of Quilalea occurs at low tide, when you can amble out among the rock pools and allow your inner child out to play. Buckets and spades not obligatory, but hey, playing in rock pools is somewhat meditative, even romantic. All manner of little scuttling creatures...and, when you walk out to the reef – yes, walk – directly in front of the hotel’s main beach, prepare to swim with turtles. Quilalea has refined the art of surprise. The staff understands the simple joy derived from another glorious meal... yet in another location, a different vista, something entirely unexpected. Romance guaranteed...with lanterns here, candles there, petals underfoot. No effort required, Quilalea does your thinking, your doing, your pleasure seeking for you. Now that’s a desert-island holiday. And as expected, an island means seafood. In this case, sensational food

fresh from the sea, from line-fish to calamari to a delectable seafood curry, all accompanied by an assortment of chilled wines with complimentary sunsets and sea views. Luxury will always be different things to different people, but for most, it’s about attention to detail. All those little things which add up to big things. At Quilalea, as you laze in your villa, on your decked veranda, on the endless stretches of beach, gazing at the vast baobab trees which decorate the island so magnificently, waiting for your next cocktail, dive, snorkel or seafood platter, you’ll be asking yourself rhetorically, ‘could I live here, like this?’ Silence will be the reply. As it should be. www.azura-retreats.com www.therovingambassador.com

For escape artists Right in the heart of the classic Okavango Delta habitat, sits the brand-new Duba Expedition Camp. It’s the ultimate, intimate great escape. Edited by: Anne Schauffer Photographs supplied

D

uba Expedition Camp lies in a 77 000 acre private concession and piece of paradise which exemplifies the region’s landscape. From palmdotted islands to floodplains and woodland, Duba consists of six – yes, only six – wonderful tents built on a wooden island, the perfect getaway for those determined to really, really get away. Duba Expedition Camp is for the wildlife connoisseur if you like, and is the base of many famous wildlife documentaries by National Geographic filmmaker’s Dereck and Beverly Joubert. It’s the only camp on the concession, so it’s about exclusivity and intimacy of wildlife sightings. Each expedition-style tent is constructed of light airy canvas on a slightly elevated deck, each tent with its open-air design offers gentle views of the surrounding floodplain. Inside, a little desk, a fan, a private veranda, en

suite facilities (including a flush loo) double basins and an outdoor shower. Not flashy, just perfect. The main area is elevated, under marquis canvas, and consists of an open-concept dining and lounge area which opens to the outdoors on all sides. In the evenings, the fire pit is the place to share stories and sightings. The sense of being the only people on earth is amplified by an authentic sense of solitude and privilege. The wooden island on which Duba Expedition Camp is elevated, links to the wildlife area by an elaborate set of bridges – it’s a wonderful connection to the wilds. Duba Expedition Camp prides itself on its extraordinary wildlife experiences, and the very first guests at the camp enjoyed lion, leopard, serval, Cape Clawless Otter and more lechwe than imaginable. From Duba

Expedition Camp, regular sightings of a diverse range of species, including large herds of red lechwe, greater kudu, tsessebe and even giraffe, which in previous years has been a rare sighting. Elephant and hippo trudge through the swamps happily, while leopard and nocturnal species such as Brown hyena can be sighted as well. Wildlife is a regular sight right in the camp. Duba and its surrounds is clearly a birdwatcher’s paradise. Okavango sightings often include the rare Wattled crane, Pel’s Fishing owl, White-backed Night heron and Marsh owl.

Dereck Joubert describes the opening of Duba Expedition Camp… and the closure of Duba Plains Camp for its complete rebuild: “The plan of action at Duba was to build a new, small but very elegant camp which we have called Duba Expedition Camp on the same island as the present camp but about 3km away.” But things change. “I stumbled on this location once while getting terribly stuck in a river crossing while filming. I sat for a moment on a large termite hill under a great ebony tree to catch my breath and compose myself. As I looked at it, I was able to take in the view. It is what can only be described as typical of those scenes you might see in a National Geographic double page spread of the pristine Okavango Delta. “After a great deal of work, Duba Expedition Camp has now opened, and we have now closed down the old Duba Plains Camp for a total rebuild. Every nail, piece of wood, wire, pipe and piece of clutter is being cut out, lifted and carted out on each incoming truck bringing new materials in. The old decks are being cut and made into campaign boxes so that some of the spirit of this old camp stays but in a new incarnation.” So, for now, you need to step off the planet and spend time at Duba Expedition Camp in the Okavango Delta. You’ll never look back. Well, you won’t want to anyway. www.greatplainsconservation.com

What ‘Winning at Life’ really means This idea of success – what’s the recipe? Is there one? Words by: Aileen Santos Courtesy of Elephant Journal

88 |

I

am on the verge of having my first novel published, have been with my partner for almost 20 years, have purchased my dream home, and have great relationships in my life. People have approached me lately with a pat on the back and the word “success” not far behind, thinking I accomplished this (whatever it is, my novel or marriage) on my own. Their idea of success is inaccurate because people only see the end goal. If they looked closely and truly analyzed my life, they would see the hundreds of writing rejections I’ve received, the failed relationships in my personal and

professional life, and the days I don’t want to get out of bed because I feel the opposite of the word successful. First of all, it takes two people (whether friends or lovers) and constant (I mean, all the time) checking in with each other and changing together to have a strong and loving relationship. As for going after my dreams, it has taken a tribe rallying around me and constantly lifting me up to remind me of my goodness anytime I may have forgotten. Second of all, I find that my idea of success is far more fluid with many moving parts to it, rather than a noun,

or a goal to be reached. It’s been (and continues to be) an awesome life journey only made more awesome by the people I’ve met. So then, how do I define success? It is not the material items I’ve accumulated over 37 years or even experiences I’ve had. Success to me means having authentic relationships, which I’ve found and formed over the years and that have helped to support me, whether it be finding a partner in the truest sense of the word or chasing after my dreams of being a writer. I truly believe the secret to any type of success can be found in relationships.

1. You Can’t Do It Alone

3. Gratitude

In my teens and 20s I was often criticized for being emotionally dependent on others, always seeking out other peoples’ opinions. Though I’ve learned to be more decisive, I think people do need to lean on others, ask for help and seek out perspectives different from their own. We, especially women, are increasingly taking on too much, attempting to do it all ourselves. Successful people are open to asking for help, delegating tasks and trusting people will carry out those tasks.

Every person I have ever looked up to, or perceived to be successful has always been grateful—grateful to those around them, whether under or above them in the social hierarchy of the workplace. These role models of success show genuine gratitude for the workers they employ or colleagues they work with, through a listening ear, consideration, kind words and gestures. Because people feel valued, they are motivated to reciprocate, thus making everyone successful. The gratitude of successful people is felt by others.

2. Competing Against Others is a Waste of Time and Energy A lot of people were raised with this notion that success looks like a lone winner standing at the top of a pyramid, that only one person can reap the benefits of a limited universe. This is false. Because I am a writer, I will use the example of novels. Think of how many novels have a similar theme of love, and are all equally successful. If I am to compete for a position that has only one spot and I don’t get the job, I’ve always realized afterward that it was not the perfect position for me. Instead and always, I focus on what’s in front of me. Successful people have an inner drive that pushes them to be better than they were yesterday, not better than someone else.

90 |

4. Work Hard Successful people have a strong work ethic. To get the job done efficiently, a successful person can be a leader or a worker bee and can often switch in and out of these roles whenever needed because they are not attached to a role or status; they simply want to do the best job they can. When others see this, they become inspired to work with you or are inspired by you.

5. Successful People Often Do Not See Themselves as Successful People I have always looked up to, or perceived to be successful often do not focus on their successes. They are simply living their lives, being thankful for those around them and

moving onto the next project. They have a certain humility, as they often question themselves and are keen to learn the next new thing from those around them. They never seem to see themselves as “experts,” only that of “student,” always learning from others. I realize this idea of success, my idea of success, includes my failures because without the rejection letters, I wouldn’t have been able to learn how to write better. Without strained relationships, I wouldn’t have learned which types of people who don’t fit me quite right. Without sadness, I wouldn’t have been able to feel and experience true joy. People will challenge us. Reject us. Exile us. But people will also listen to us. Lift us, and love us. Success is made by people, between people, for people. For me, the secret to success is found in relationships with others. We need each other in this world, to help, support, to build each other up. Success is not a solitary, stagnant idea. This idea of success includes all of us, evolving, together. www.elephantjournal.com

Thinking out the box? Dutch company Fiction Factory can custom make a super-stylish Wikkelhouse in a single day... ship it to you in segments, and construct it in double quick time. It’s about three times more durable than traditional construction Edited by: Anne Schauffer Photographs supplied

hat about a fabulous Wikkelhouse, designed and developed by Fiction Factory, a company of Dutch creative makers. Originally a décor construction studio – they still do this – they now do a host of other things too. Almost anything really: they manufactured a 5 metre by 5 metre poppy, together with an enormous, stage-filling dragon for a musical. They also created the prototypes of a series of true-to-life rhinoceros heads, for the stand of a well-known fashion label. They almost claim to turn the impossible into the possible, and pride themselves on never giving a straight NO answer.

96 |

And Wikkelhouse? Four years of research and development has led to a pioneering construction technology that involves a unique rotating house-shaped mould. The base of Wikkelhouse is corrugated cardboard. Layer after layer of this topquality cardboard is wrapped around the mould - the 24 layers are bonded together with eco-friendly superglue. The result is an incredibly robust sandwich structure with optimal insulation qualities. By this wrapping process, a heat insulation and construction method are integrated in a sustainable way. Afterwards each segment is sealed in a waterproof foil and finished with wood - individual

segments invisibly linked together. Yes, it really is waterproof Even its acoustics are unequalled. Wikkelen is Dutch for wrapping, hence: Wikkelhouse. Since Wikkelhouse is sustainably produced and made of materials that have minimal impact on the environment, it is three times more eco-friendly than traditional housing. In addition, the segments can be reused repeatedly and are 100% recyclable. A Wikkelhouse is a wonderfully flexible little dwelling which meets the criteria for temporary or permanent housing, plus anything else you’d like it to be. Each one is tailor-made by specialised craftsmen, so you can choose to have extra windows, different finishes, or your own colour scheme. It’s yours. The modular setup makes the house highly flexible. Made up of 1,2 metre-deep

segments that can easily be connected and disconnected, you can add extra segments for extra meters. Create your own floorplan. Change it later. As Fiction Factory says, “Truly anything goes.” Fancy a kitchen in your Wikkelhouse? A bathroom? A shower? Include Fiction Factory’s smart home-segment to your Wikkelhouse layout, and you’re set for life. You don’t even need a foundation and, because each segment only weighs 500 kilograms, when it’s time to move house, take your Wikkelhouse with you. Wikkelhouse can be placed within a day, and supplied with glass facades or closed. It’s a unique and contemporary design, that creates liveable, unique and creative spaces. The only downside for now is that they’re only built in Europe. http://wikkelhouse.com

design of air tubes, thus producing a mask to fit your face and neck, providing comfort when worn by the user. We love the idea here, because this mask won’t hide your face behind its air curtain. It allows the user’s face to be seen when the mask is on. The constant air flow that forms the curtain, keeps the air’s water vapours and carbon dioxide away from the user, thereby reducing stuffiness around the nose and mouth region. The outward blowing of the air curtain also pushes back any foreign particles, before they can touch the user’s face. Designer: RuiFeng, Yeo

Skully AR-1: Vertically integrated smart HUD motorcycle helmet The Skully AR-1 Helmet sets a new standard in motorcycle helmets. Well, it’s about time someone finally got it right. Marcus Weller, the founder and CEO of the company, says that motorcycle riders want integrated tech within their safety equipment, something that helps them enjoy the ride even more. In today’s technology where screens are integrated into almost everything, why not give a helmet a make-over. A helmet is for safety, that remains unchanged for decades. Skully AR-1 is a revolutionary full-face helmet with a integrated small 180-degree camera mounted on to the central spine of the helmet. This small camera provides images for the heads-up display (HUD) in the right side of the rider’s field of vision to inform the rider about what’s happening behind them. In this way, motorcycle riders can see better without turning their heads, no more blindspots. The Bluetooth technology streams music or any call from your phone to the helmet without overwhelming the rider. From: Skully

The growth of Solar PV Plants U

tility Scale Solar Photovoltaic Plants or simply PV Plants/Parks are large solar PV installations in excess of 1 MW. This definition varies depending on the context, however for simplification, utility scale plants are those requiring a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to remain viable. Solar PV plants have experienced unprecedented growth and investment worldwide and regionally in the past 10 years. The International Energy Agency expects that the global installed capacity for Solar PV will grow from levels of below 200 GW in 2012 to above 800 GW in 2040. To put this further in context, it is worthwhile to follow the growth of solar PV in neighbouring South Africa under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPP). Since its inception in 2010, the programme has achieved the following milestones: • 17 GW of Renewables by 2030, of which 8.4 GW is Solar PV • 2.2 GW Solar PV Projects Allocated • 0.96 GW Solar PV Projects Installed (2015) • Solar PV Tariff reduced from R2.75/ kWh (Round 1) to 0.88 (Round 3) 68% These achievements were made on the basis of key success factors in the programme, including a clear competitive bidding process, government guarantees against credit and political risk, creation of a market via allocation of MW specifically for renewables and the ability of the programme to mature over successive bid windows. In Namibia, significant progress has been made in the development and execution of utility scale PV projects. Where previously the largest PV projects included the 300kW+ off grid systems at Tsumkwe and Gam and a 1 MW Rooftop installation at Namibia Breweries, presently at total of 20

104 |

MW of Solar PV projects are either operational or under construction. The Interim REFIT (Renewable Energy Feed In Tariff) programme is targeting 70 MW projects in the form of 5 MW Renewable Energy projects, with the possibility that the bulk of the allocation could consist of Solar PV projects. The REFIT projects are slated for financial close/approval in Q2 2016. A new bid for 37 MW of Solar PV is scheduled for May 2016.

Ipinge Agapitus is a Professional Electrical Engineer with 10 years’ experience in the field of electrical infrastructure provision in Namibia. He has worked since 2014 at Hangala Group in the field of Project and Business Development for a leading Solar PV Independent Power Producer, in the development of Solar PV Plants in SubSaharan Africa.

In the context of a total demand of 550 MW, these projects could contribute to a total installed capacity of Solar PV >25% of demand by 2019 in Namibia. Implementing Solar PV plants has not been without technical and financial challenges. Consider that more than 60% of PV Plant cost is panels, which are sourced from overseas manufacturers in USD currency. Although the price of solar panels is decreasing, these savings are eroded by

worsening exchange rates. Some limited protection can be made by increasing other local content in the project cost. Potentially the currency depreciation could also decrease the returns (earned in Namibian Dollar/Rands) to overseas investors in the short term. The strong growth of the renewables programme in South Africa has placed some constraints on the utility Eskom, which struggled to find sufficient funding for continued maintenance and expansion of the transmission network in areas where renewable projects were being developed. In the period 2014 – 2015, the procurement of PV projects was beyond the utilities ability to expand the grid. A further challenge is the need to address the requirement to provide energy during the peak evening hours where no sunshine is available. There are also daily and seasonal fluctuations in solar power production (due to cloud cover and other factors) which must be considered. This has driven efforts into research and production of utility and residential scale storage, the most prominent of which are those by Tesla, seeking to mass produce batteries and pursuing synergies with its electrical vehicle business. This market however, may require some time to mature before a compelling business case for Solar PV plus storage can be considered more readily. It has been made abundantly clear that Namibia is well positioned with respect to solar resources and that the risks are not significantly technical. Alignment of renewables expansion with NamPower as a national utility will be important to avoid bottlenecks. Further challenges for stakeholders and investors alike will be to develop projects befitting the size of the market, mitigating challenging financial conditions and aligning private sector and government risk allocation.

Rhino Facts: In the late 1970s aggressive poaching took the Namibian Black Rhino to the brink of extinction. Thousands of rhino were slaughtered to satisfy the demand for fashion accessories and oriental medicines. By the early 1980s the population had plummeted from 65,000 to just 60. The ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project was established to reintroduce and conserve rhino in the Erongo region, reintroducing Black Rhino into the area after the last of its kind was caught in 1974. For every bottle of OASIS sold a contribution is made to the ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project, helping to conserve and protect these beautiful creatures.

Baggage Guidelines

At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.

Our rules pertaining to baggage include the following We offer our passengers a generous free hand baggage allowance, with maximum weight of 10kg each, and maximum size 55 x 38 x 20 cm; plus an overcoat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a ladies hand bag, a reasonable amount of reading material, and a laptop. We also allow a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches as hand baggage.

CHANCELLORS

GOLF DAY 2016 “To ensure the future growth and development of our country, it is imperative that school leavers are given the opportunity to develop their skills and become active members of the professional workforce. Your support is vital in achieving this goal.” ~ His Excellency Dr Sam Nujoma, Founding Father of the Nation and Patron of the UNAM Foundation The Chancellor’s Golf Day is an annual fundraising event whose proceeds are channeled to the UNAM Student Hardship Fund. This year, the event will be held at Omeya Golf Club on Friday, 29th July 2016. The Student Hardship Fund is aimed at providing contingency funds for students in exceptional financial distress. For example, students already struggling to pay for their tuition may find an unexpected expense, such as replacing a broken pair of spectacles, an insurmountable financial challenge. Alternatively, a retrenchment in the family network supporting a student could easily call an abrupt halt to his or her studies. The Hardship Fund is an important mechanism to help student weather such personal crises and prevent them from becoming permanent disasters. This year, all proceeds from the golf day will be assigned specifically to physically challenged students in need of assistance from the Student Hardship Fund. Undoubtedly, it can be much tougher for physically challenged students to achieve their dreams of tertiary education when their needs are different to those of able-bodied students. For example, hearing or sight-impaired students require special aids in order to receive instruction in the lecture room. Similarly, students with physical disability require specialized equipment in order to move around freely. When these challenges are exacerbated by financial constraints, it very often means that they are unable to acquire the necessary tools. The Hardship Fund aims to address these challenges as part of the University’s ongoing efforts to make its campuses a conducive environment for all. Any support to this worthy cause is sincerely appreciated and no amount is too small. Support can be offered in a variety of ways and do not need to be cash only. We would love to discuss with you ways in which you can support the University and invite you to contact us. For more information or to participate, please contact us: UNAM Foundation Barbara van der Westhuizen Tel: +264-61-206 3262 Fax: +264-61-206 3264 Email: bvdwesthuizen@unam.na / unamfoundation@unam.na

In Namibia, Airports are run and maintained by the Namibia Airports Company (NAC), a State-Owned Entity (SOE) formed in 1998 by Act of Government (Act 25 of 1998). The NAC provides airport infrastructure, amenities, and facilitates airport services for domestic and international airlines and passengers. In fulfilling its mandate, the NAC ensures that airport infrastructure and safety and security equipment are well maintained and meet world-class standards. Airports under the NAC are: Hosea Kutako Airport, Eros Airport, Walvis Bay Airport, Luderitz Airport, Keetmanshoop Airport, Ondangwa Airport, Rundu Airport and Katima Mulilo Airport.

WHO REGULATES / CONTROLS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AIRPORT TAXES IN NAMIBIA?

The charging of these fees is regulated in compliance with ICAO Doc 9562. In Namibia, the NAC, in compliance with Doc 9562 and its mandate per the Airports Company Act. Both these statutory documents regulate and control the continued implementation, review and collection of these fees. HOW REGULARLY IS AIRPORT TAXES REVIEWED AND BY WHOM? The NAC reviews the charges in consultation with the Board of Airline Representatives (BAR), who represents the airlines, and aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), who represents general aviation operators. This review is conducted annually or as decided by the relevant parties in order for the fees to remain commensurate with ever escalating operational and other costs. NAC has over the years invested billions of dollars into its key capital projects to improve amongst others; runways and terminal facilities at its various airports.

WHAT ARE AIRPORT TAXES USED FOR? Airport tax is one of the key revenue streams of any airport and is levied on passengers to recover the cost of running and for the up keep of passenger terminal facilities that are dedicated to passenger services, including the costs of security services attributable thereto (unless security services are charged for separately), and the cost of ground handling facilities and services attributable to passenger arrivals and departures.

In line with its mission and vision , the NAC ensures that every experience at landing and departure is of world - class standard and airport taxes play an integral part in making it all possible.
