Dear Esteemed Passengers, We are pleased to share with you, that with half of the year gone we are indeed on track with the various projects and initiatives we had set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. We have also further said that going forward, we are going to strive to be better communicators; but also to do better in terms of replying to queries or concerns raised. In this vein, we have activated authentic and official Social Media accounts, the details of which appear at the bottom of the page - and look forward to hearing from you and keeping in touch with all of you. At the national airline we would also wish to do our part as one of the cogs in the wheel called ‘domestic tourism’. Going forward, we will be trying to do more, to promote air travel amongst our own people – that each Namibian should enjoy this land, which truly is an indication of God’s bounty. Towards this end, we are inviting all creative friends of the airline, to help us coin a theme for our “domestic tourism/ domestic air travel” initiative. Our colleagues in our Commercial Department will be looking forward to getting your ideas, on what we can do to encourage as many members of our population to travel by air. Please send your ideas to our social media accounts. We look forward to

receiving your ideas! It gives me great pleasure to also share with all of you that on 20th May 2016 Air Namibia celebrated twenty-five years of flying to Angola. This event was marked by an exciting celebration in the beautiful city of Luanda, with us being in the wonderful company of our compatriots, friends and business partners. We certainly look forward to another twenty-five years of flying to Angola! For the month of July 2016, the ‘resort/route’, focus is our Windhoek-Walvis Bay return flight and Terrace Bay Camp. Whilst this was indeed the focus last month, with the beauty of the Namibian coast-line, we are certain that this will be welcomed by many who would be excited to have a chance to visit or even to revisit the oldest desert in the world! Terrace Bay (an NWR Resort) is an angler’s paradise offering an exceptional coastal experience inside the famous Skeleton Coast Park in Northwest Namibia. The camp is located on the

coast, set in an undisturbed and peaceful spot, surrounded by the majestic dunes of the Northern Namib Desert. You can hike, bird watch, spot game or witness breath-taking sunsets from atop the dunes. Having attended the 72nd IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit in Dublin, Ireland (1-3 June 2016), amongst the key issues discussed was the issue of the impact of the aviation industry on the environment. Going forward the national carrier will be looking into various initiatives to ensure that our operations adhere to the industry norm in terms of our impact on the environment.

We at Air Namibia have come a long way and as we continue to go forward, the promise to our passengers is that we will continue to strive to keep your safety and satisfaction at the heart of everything we do.

Standard Bank ready to support the mining sector Standard Bank has a rich pedigree in the mining industry. As a Bank well-versed in serving the mining sector in Africa, Standard Bank has been framing its products to ensure that the country has more bankable projects that can take the country to new economic heights. The Bank has been ready to finance large-scale mining projects, understanding that the projects require big chunks of financing. One recent key highlight has been the co-financing of Debmarine Namibia’s latest sampling and exploration vessel (approximately N$1.8 billion). “Like many large investment banks, we work with the government, corporates and financial clients in multiple sectors and geographies. Unlike most, we are first and foremost Namibian; we have a long, proud history that gives us a unique depth of expertise and breadth of footprint. We are set apart by our scale, by the strength of our regional and international connections, and by our ability to innovate. Our track record shows our success in building businesses across Namibia, especially in natural resources, mining, power and infrastructure sectors, ” thus Standard Bank’s Head of Client Coverage in Corporate and Investment Banking Division, Adri Spangenberg.

tbwa.com.na

While this year may be a challenging one for the global mining industry, mining prospects remain Standard Bank’s strength and passion for Africa as a region. And so when clients speak with Standard Bank, they are actually having a conversation with an entire regional regional backbone. We are always ready to finance business ventures with an established business plan and viable outlook. Exploration projects, however, have a very unique business structure in that income streams tend to be highly speculative and dependent on what’s in the ground and the interested extraction counterparty. For this reason, most exploration projects are funded by owner equity or by sizeable minerals extraction firms. Mining is a risky business that is influenced by several factors, including uncertainties in commodity prices on the world markets. However in terms of the outlook, commodity prices are not anticipated to exhibit material improvement, impacting on sector valuations and the ability to raise financing. But Standard Bank Group research shows that African mining remains underexplored.

122 |

Adri Spangenberg, Head: Client Coverage, Standard Bank Corporate and Investment Banking

In 2013, African exploration accounted for 17% of the worldwide exploration budget despite the fact that the continent holds more than 30% of the world’s mineral resources. So amid a more sober outlook, the prospects for mining in Africa remain essentially intact over the medium term. And although cautious, our appetite for mining projects is quite strong. What financing products is Standard Bank offering to medium and large scale exploration and mining firms? We offer solutions in Advisory, Capital Markets, Debt and Transactional Services. All these capabilities bring together complementary skills from corporate finance and balance sheet banking to geology and mining engineering. And with our global footprint, our transactional banking network is able to provide our clients with a more seamless solution for their day-to-day operations.

Debmarine Namibia’s latest sampling and exploration vessel (approximately N$1.8 billion) financed by Standard Bank Namibia

How do you convince a local miner to access project financing from your Bank, other than foreign financial institutions, understanding that it is always cheaper to borrow from Banks in foreign countries where interest rates are relatively lower? This question symbolises our strength as a regional bank. We are able to finance miners on both local and foreign exchange expenditure needs within our integrated Group structure. How will Standard Bank contribute to the growth of the mining sector in Namibia? Because of our history as a mining bank and our enduring expertise in this sector, we work to understand our clients‘ individual requirements. We coordinate and execute our clients’ financing and banking requirements across Africa and emerging global markets. Our highly regarded commodity and currency trading desks offer 24-hour trading capabilities to support price-risk management and hedging strategies. In addition, we carry out in-depth analyses of commodity trends and stay on top of the latest developments in the mining and metals industry. We continue to play a leading role in arranging facilities for many of the most significant mining projects in Africa and other key emerging markets. Our comprehensive suite of financing and advisory solutions for the mining and metals sector includes: • Project finance • Corporate finance advisory solutions

• Working capital facilities • Bridging finance • Acquisition finance • Inventory financing • Structured trade and commodity finance • Commodity price risk management solutions • Foreign exchange and interest rate hedging • Global transactional banking services In the meantime, we continue to participate in dialogues that promote sustainable business and growth in the mining sector. Standard Bank Namibia is confident that the mining sector promises positive growth opportunities for the country, despite a downturn in the global mining industry. Mining prospects, however, look bright for Namibia as the country is currently the world’s fourth largest producer of uranium and is expected to overtake Niger and Australia by 2017 through the commencement of the Husab mine production. As Standard Bank, our eminence talks to financing power and infrastructure, mining and metals, oil and gas, and other key sectors such as fast-moving consumable goods, real estate and telecommunication. As the world looks to emerging markets to power growth, Namibia is taking its rightful place at the heart of this.

The coastline in this area presents spectacular seascapes and tidal pools, and during this time of the year – end of October - the fynbos is in full flower and offers endless photographic opportunities. On the other side of the valley, the wheat harvest will be in full swing, creating rhythmic, geometric patterns over the rolling hills. Photographer’s dream. The daily programme for the Overberg workshop consists of an early morning excursion, followed by lectures and brunch. After brunch, you’ll view your photographs taken the previous day and select images for evaluation. Evaluation is followed by another excursion lasting until after the sun goes down. And then there’s the life-altering option of whale watching. Really it is.

The Overberg photographic team works in conjunction with a highly-respected operator where the welfare and comfort of the whales comes first. Be assured of that. As an optional extra, you can choose an early morning two-hour trip to photograph the whales in Walker Bay. It is a remarkable experience, unforgettable...even if you do not take a single photograph! Volmoed is known as a retreat. Retreat from what, you ask? Everything really. You’ll see. The setting is so exquisite, the

The simple changes we introduce on boats and in policy not only eliminate this bycatch, but are good for fishermen too. I don’t see another way that would work better than what we are doing now.”

Journeys the artist’s and yours You can easily lose yourself in a Karen Fortune painting. Somehow, they draw you in and next thing, you’re somewhere else By: Anne Schauffer Photographs supplied

A

t first glance, you’ll pigeonhole Karen’s work as photorealism,

but she’ll correct you. It’s termed hyper realism which, she explains, unlike its near-relatives of realism or photo-realism, is best described as

having

the

appearance

of

a

hi-res digital photograph. That means ultra fine detail, but the shadows are darker, the lights are brighter. The contrasts are more intense. Not all her paintings are hyper-realistic, but it’s the point of perfection where she’s most comfortable. Somehow

in the vastness of her landscapes, one pictures the artist as larger than life. Karen isn’t at all. She’s entirely unassuming,

admits to the same deep sense of trepidation which accompanies every fresh canvas. She laughs, “I look at the brush, its size, and I look at the 1,3 metres of white canvas, and wonder if I’ll be able to do it; whether I’ll be up to the challenge of getting it right.” So, what is Getting It Right? She shrugs, “In the hyperrealism style, it’s not about a

compelled to paint a particular picture, and can’t do anything else until I’ve done so. My garage doors don’t appeal to everybody, but I have to do them. There’s always somebody who relates to them as I do.”

| 35

She began her own carpentry business, with skills gleaned from magazines and her neighbour, an elderly master cabinet maker. She had all the tools, supplied a cottage furniture shop with standard items, and designed customised furniture for private clients. “I must have made 500 bookcases over the years…”

And still, she painted. Karen took in three of her paintings to be framed. The gallery owner urged her to bring in some for sale. They sold, but still she dabbled. Karen would be the first to admit that the birth of her son was the turning point in her attitude to painting as a career. “’Til then, I’d painted when I felt like it. You can’t survive like that. For the first time in my life, I put my head down and worked every day. I started waking up at around 4am like I do now, and, wow, did it bear fruit. I went like a mad dog – have ever since – and went from strength to strength.” Everybody needs a mentor, and when Cherie de Villiers “discovered” Karen for her Johannesburg

36 |

Gallery, she became that motivating force. Today, there are a number of collectors in Johannesburg who own up to 14 Karen Fortune paintings. Cherie says that Karen’s landscapes don’t fit the traditional landscape mould: “They’re clean and crisp, and that’s why, in many instances, they appeal to the younger end of the art market.” From her landscapes of Karoo towns

and

wonderful

buildings,

Karen’s venturing into other territory. She’s become a passionate (and really good) mountain biker, and that’s taken her into unspoiled landscapes which she can’t resist painting. “People always say you can go and paint anywhere in the world, but I can’t. My passion is Africa. We go to places that most people will never see. The back roads of everywhere. Ours is absolutely the most beautiful country in the world.” GALLERIES: Karen Fortune Email: karenfortune2@gmail.com Cherie De Villiers Gallery Web: http://www.gallery.co.za.

Q

A day in the life of A normal day usually involves me in my studio and workshop. I make up orders from my Jewellery Collections, as well as dream up exciting ideas for new ranges. I meet with clients to discuss commissions, re-modelling of jewellery, and creating extra special pieces like engagement rings, wedding sets and so on. I also make time to photograph all my new pieces, manage my advertising and marketing, and make sure I have an online presence to keep my clients aware of what I am up to on a regular basis. I am completely involved in the whole process from start to finish, to ensure that whatever the piece of jewellery, it will always meet my standards for quality and workmanship.

The wheel story: New Models round up JAMES SIDDALL on what's happening in the wonderful world of wheels... Beamer with a twist Is the BMW 3 Series a bit too conventional for you? Then you might like the new 3 Series Gran Turismo – which at 200mm longer adds to the spaciousness as well as the edginess of the standard, segment-defining 3 Series. Or, as BMW puts it, it blends

the elegance of a coupé with the spaciousness of a luxury sedan, and the boot capacity of a station wagon. This is a striking machine inside and out, with all the sporting aesthetics, performance and handling you would expect of a Beamer. And it can be had as a Sport Line,

Luxury Line or M Sport model, all available with a huge degree of individualisation and options. It goes on sale in our part of the world this month, and will be available with a turbodiesel (320d Gran Turismo) and a brace of turbopetrol units (320i and 340i Gran Turismo) .

Hybrid high When Toyota terms the Prius a “game-changer”, they're hardly indulging in frothy marketing-speak. After all, when it was launched in Japan in 1997, it became the world's first mass-produced hybrid, and a global darling of the eco-conscious – although it only came to this part of the world in 2005. Now the new, fourth-generation Prius builds on its predecessors' impeccable green-car reputation with lashings of cutting-edge tech. Among it a smaller, yet more efficient hybrid battery, plus a re-engineered 1.8-litre VVTI-i Atkinson cycle petrol engine. It is also a little longer, wider, and

52 |

lower than the previous model, not to mention sleeker, slicker and yet more economical. With a combined output of 90kW from the petrol engine and electric motor, performance is snappy. The new Prius moves from rest to 100km/h in 10.6 seconds, with a top speed of 180km/h. And in case you were wondering, Prius means “front runner” in Latin, while before the launch of the fourthgeneration model, more than 3.5 million had already been sold.

On the attack The Subaru WRX STI has always been renowned for being quite quick – to put it very mildly indeed. Now a WRTX STI Time Attack car – which is a purpose-built joint development of Subaru America and Prodrive – has just set a new lap record of the legendary 37-mile Isle of Man TT Road Course. It did it with an average lap speed of 128.73mph and a time of 17.35. As they say on TV, do not try this at home kids.

Hard at work It seems that the Nissan Hardbody does not just carry the name because it sounds nice but rather because it pretty much sums up the vehicle. After all, in South Africa a 2002 Nissan Hardbody 2.4i 16v Double

Cab has just clocked a scarcely believable, fault-free 1.5 million kilometres. And this hasn't been easy mileage. As owner Brian Kannemeyer says: “I regularly travel for work, and I am back and forth between

Johannesburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, and even as far as the Limpopo Province. I also travel to Namibia regularly, and Madam (as the vehicle is named) and I often visit Windhoek, Keetmanshoop, Swakopmund, and even as far as the Angolan border for work.” On these work-trips, Brian loads the Hardbody and trailers up to four metres long with the maximum payload allowed, easily covering 3 000 km on a single trip, and 12 000 km to 15 000 km in a single month. Yet the 2.4-litre engine remains unopened – although the bakkie has, of course, been serviced regularly.

Just dune it The word “icon” is a bit overused. But not when it comes to the VW Beetle – now available as a striking

Dune crossover variant. Power to the model available here comes from a 110kW, 1.4 TSI motor mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission, while with everything from 18-inch alloy wheels to a lifted body to off-road looks, it is distinctive indeed. And it is available in just three colours. Pure White. Reflex Silver. And retina-wrenching Sandstorm Yellow.

Prancing horse perfection Saying “told you so!” is both unattractive and infantile. But when we recently wrote about the new Ferrari 488 GTB on these pages we waxed lyrical over it and its turbocharged V8. Now that 3.9-litre twin-turbo motor has just been named overall winner at the highly prestigious

International Engine of the Year awards held in Stuttgart with 63 jurors from more than 30 countries. And this engine – which powers the 488 GTB, the 488 Spider and, with a slightly different displacement, the California T – also scooped the

Performance Engine and New Engine categories, as well as the 3-litre to 4-litre displacement category. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s naturallyaspirated 6.3-litre V12 engine that powers the F12berlinetta and F12tdf received the Above 4-litre award.

A continent-crushing two-wheeler The new Honda Africa Twin truly is a go-anywhere, do-anything motorcycle, writes JAMES SIDDALL...

58 |

S

eldom has a motorcycle carried a more evocative, more apt name than the Honda Africa Twin, specifically the new CRF1000L – which builds on the heritage of its much-lauded XRV750 predecessor. It is evocative because it conjures up images of traversing the savannah, crossing vast uncharted swathes of the Sahara, or perhaps scything down the glutinous mud-red roads of a central African rainforest. And it is apt because this machine can do all this and more. Just like its famed predecessor which over the years found favour and fame with overlanders. But it is equally at home carving up the tarmac or commuting in urban areas, while the new CRF1000L is laden with fiendishly brilliant technology. “From the outset of designing and engineering our new Africa Twin, we wanted to create a full-scale true adventure motorcycle that was equally enjoyable and capable in crossing vast continents as it was on the highway and in everyday use,” as Mr Y. Hasegawa, Series Large Project Leader (SLPL) for the new CRF1000L, puts it. “The legacy and performance of the previous model was a significant reference point in our thinking, and after many satisfying months of research work, testing, development and riding, our CRF1000L has off-road

ability that makes dirt roads a joy to tackle, with the comfort of a tourer and agility of a commuter. In other words, a model truly worthy of inheriting the Africa Twin name.” Powering proceedings is a punchy, parallel-twin with a capacity of 998cc – and the ability to provide an excellent balance between torque and power. There is 70kW at 7 500rpm and 98Nm of torque at 6 000rpm on tap, while the motor is engineered for weight saving, a low centre of gravity and – importantly this – a linear, straight power curve mated to a bulging torque curve. So it does not matter what the situation or engine speed. There always seems to be precisely the right amount of muscle on tap.

It also so happens that besides the standard Africa Twin with its six-speed transmission, there are two additional models available. One comes with ABS and multiple mode Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC). The other is equipped with Honda’s excellent Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), in addition to HSTC and ABS. Very usefully it is possible for the rider to turn off the ABS system for the rear brake, allowing the rear wheel to lock when riding off road. Meanwhile, with the HSTC there are four levels of control to choose from. And so riders can decrease the degree of intervention – which allows for increasing amounts of rear wheel spin when off road. As for the Dual Clutch Transmission, riders will find this streamlines proceedings both on and off road, and it can be used in standard manual mode allowing the rider to operate gear shifts through triggers on the left handlebar. In addition there are two automatic modes. For the optimum balance of economy and comfort there is D mode. For sports performance there is S mode, while naturally the Africa Twin DCT is also fully optimised for when the going gets tough. And by hitting the G button the control of the clutch system is modified to give a more direct drive. Other tech highlights of this covetable adventure bike include 45mm Showa inverted forks that are fully adjustable

| 59

and feature dual radial-mount Bissin four-piston brake calipers, and 310mm “wave” style floating discs. Meanwhile, the Showa rear shock has hydraulic spring pre-load adjustment, while the CRF1000L Africa Twin rolls on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheels. Further enhancing functionality are dual LED headlights, a seat that adjusts 20mm from the standard 870mm down to 850mm, and hardy, lightweight bodywork that keeps the machine slim and agile. Yet it also provides the rider with maximum weather protection, and to provide optimal wind protection while touring – without hindering freedom off-road – the cowl and screen are an integrated unit. For extended touring a taller, wider screen is available. And because new Africa Twin is born to gobble up long distances, there

60 |

is a big 18.8- litre fuel tank – providing a range of up to and over 400km. Equally importantly, thanks to the cleverly compact design of both engine and frame, ground clearance is 250mm, with a wheelbase of 1 575mm, and rake and trail of 27.5 degrees/113mm. The lightweight subframe features diagonal cross bracing, meanwhile, and will carry a cargo weight of 30kg. Dry weight of the standard model is a manageable 208kg, with a wet weight of 228kg. Usefully, too, the steering angle of 43 degrees either way equates to a turning radius of just 2.6m – handy when threading through busy streets or down a challenging trail. Get yours in a choice of colours including the Tricolour option which pays tribute to the original XRV750L Africa Twin – a machine whose heritage the new, crushingly capable CRF1000L builds on.

Driving into the future Mercedes' magnificent new E-Class is arguably the most technologically advanced sedan money can buy, writes an impressed JAMES SIDDALL...

James Siddall

62 |

T

he mighty Mercedes S-Class has long been at the forefront of Benz engineering. And over the decades cutting-edge technology of the sort that has seemed incredibly futuristic at the time has debuted in this big sedan. But now, with the recent advent of its slightly smaller sibling, the allnew E-Class, it seems that the crown has gone to this car. For the time being at least, until a new or revised S-Class appears. The new E-Class was recently launched to local media in KZN, South Africa, and its ground-breaking technologies are

of the sort that not very long ago at all would have bordered on science-fiction. As Mercedes itself says – and I can only concur after several hundred kilometres behind the wheel of various new E-Class models during the launch – with the tenth-generation of this executive sedan “Mercedes-Benz is taking a big step into the future.” Of course it is large, luxurious and bristling with all the comforts and conveniences that one might dare to hope for. Not to mention simply superlative build quality, fit, and finish. But it also comes replete with tech innovations that take the driving

experience – as well as safety levels – to new and previously unexplored limits. In fact, this car will almost drive itself. Yup, it is essentially semi-autonomous when specced correctly, and is a portent of what is perhaps to come in terms of fully autonomous cars. At the moment just three variants of this machine are currently available on our market with more muscular versions, including AMG models, to follow. But rest assured that as with pretty much every Mercedes, they are capable of sustained high-speeds of the sort best tried on the autobahn, while providing cossetting comfort. The E-Class, as mentioned, also rewrites the rules on automotive intelligence. Yet none of this tech is frivolous or designed with a novelty value in mind. It is all eminently aimed at elevating the driving experience – and the safety factor. Just some of this remarkable machine's

highlights number a new diesel engine that delivers hybrid-like economy. Try a claimed 3.9 litres per 100km in the combined cycle for the E 220d – which pumps out 143kW and 400Nm, enough to take it from zero to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds. Power runs to the rear wheels, of course, through the nine-speed automatic gearbox common to the whole range. But most arresting are twin 12.3-inch displays. These high-resolution units effectively give a wide-screen, almost completely digital, cockpit and are an optional extra over the standard cockpit. Meanwhile, in what Mercedes terms “a first for a car” – and let us not forget that this manufacturer has had a few firsts over the decades, to put it mildly – the steering wheel features touchsensitive Touch Controls. They work rather like a smartphone. Nice for the “connected generation.” Then there are the driving assistance systems. Try options such as Drive Pilot. This makes you realise just how close the E-Class is to being fully autonomous, and will keep the car at a pre-set distance from the vehicle in front. Not too novel that. But – get this – it will also give steering assistance from what is called the Steering Pilot, and does so by taking into account surrounding vehicles and parallel structures. Even if the lane markings are unclear or nonexistent, like at road works. Then – coming in 2017 – there is Remote Parking Pilot which lets you get out of the car and park it remotely using a smartphone app. This is useful. Cars

get bigger all the time – the E-Class is 43mm longer than its predecessor – just as parking bays get smaller. And I have not even told you about Evasive Steering Assist. If you start to swerve to avoid, say, a pedestrian, the steering automatically helps

you complete the manoeuvre in a controlled way, and then straightens out the car. All of which gives this Benz the arguable title of the most intelligent production vehicle that money can buy right now. PRICING E200 – N$ 720 000 E220d - $773 000 E350d - $964 000

Everything really does keep going right A massive Toyota investment in South Africa proves faith in the whole region, as well as in the new Hilux and Fortuner, writes JAMES SIDDALL...

66 |

Y

ou know that new Toyota Hilux or Fortuner that you are driving? Or at least should be considering driving – if you do not already – as the latest generation of these vehicles is not just a refinement on the outgoing model, but a quantum leap forward in every regard. Something I can personally attest to having spent time with both. Well, the Hilux and Fortuner are built at Toyota's sprawling Prospecton plant outside Durban, South Africa, and in what is a massive endorsement of these models, as well as the entire subcontinent as a whole, R6-1 billion was recently invested in their production.

This also reinforces Toyota South Africa Motors’ (TSAM) enviable status as the largest automaker in South Africa. After all, it manufactures five individual models (Hilux, Fortuner, Corolla, Corolla Quest and Quantum). That is in addition to selected Hino and Dyna models produced as SKD or semi-knocked-down assemblies. And over half of the Hiluxes and Fortuners built at Prospecton – the biggest global manufacturer of these vehicles after Thailand – will find homes abroad. In fact, in 2016 TSAM will export more than 55 000 Hiluxes and Fortuners to 74 countries in Europe, Latin America, and Africa, including Namibia. These will include right- and lefthand- dri ve models,

all imbued with that legendary Toyota toughness, plus a healthy dose of refinement, especially in the case of the Fortuner and the top-spec Hilux models. At peak production some 140 000 of these vehicles will be rolling of the South African production lines every year. Importantly, too, while the previous Hilux and Fortuner had about 1 500 local parts, the new models have 2 700, which helps greatly with the localisation of manufacturing. “This latest announcement gives evidence of a company that is defiantly committed to South Africa by strategically investing in the people, tools and equipment to produce cars and commercial vehicles of world-class standard that are not only destined for the domestic market, but will also fly our flag high on the international stage thanks to a robust export plan,” TSAM President and CEO Andrew Kirby said at a function to mark this mega-investment.

| 67

“But it is in fact more than that – it’s also a celebration of the pivotal role that both Hilux and Fortuner play in the overall development of the South African motor industry.” While all these numbers might seem huge, however, SA really is just a minor player on the automotive global scene. “Although we are justifiably proud of the achievements of the motor industry in growing production and especially exports post-1994, we must remember that South Africa currently produces less than one percent of the 90-million vehicles made worldwide each year,” as Dr Johan van Zyl, Chairman of Toyota South Africa and Chief Managing Officer of Toyota Motors Europe, pointed out. “We have to remain world competitive not only in terms of wages and productivity, but also regarding labour stability. I cannot stress enough the importance of engagement – engage, engage and engage again – the need to employ dispute resolution as the first and ultimately only line of

defense rather than resorting to strike action as the solution. “Nevertheless, I am confident that a fair and equitable labour agreement can be reached and rest assured, that no matter what, Toyota will do its utmost to continue to put its customers and South Africa first.” TSAM, by the way, is also pretty proud that the locally produced Hilux will continue to be supplied to 16 United Nations organisations and outfits. These include the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (UNIRFC). And if anyone knows the importance of near-indestructible vehicles, it is the UN. It is also exceptionally unsurprising that the new Hilux and Fortuner are simply killing it on the sales charts. It could not be otherwise, given their embodiment of core Toyota values, such as quality, durability, and reliability.

Rhino Facts: In the late 1970s aggressive poaching took the Namibian Black Rhino to the brink of extinction. Thousands of rhino were slaughtered to satisfy the demand for fashion accessories and oriental medicines. By the early 1980s the population had plummeted from 65,000 to just 60. The ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project was established to reintroduce and conserve rhino in the Erongo region, reintroducing Black Rhino into the area after the last of its kind was caught in 1974. For every bottle of OASIS sold a contribution is made to the ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project, helping to conserve and protect these beautiful creatures.

The colour of satire Pawel Kuczynski has won a record number of international competitions for satirical drawings in Poland and abroad. Images supplied

P

awel Kuczynski was born in 1976 in Szczecin in Poland, and in 2001, graduated from the Department of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Pozna, specialising in graphics. He has been preoccupied with satirical drawings since 2004. Kuczynski calls himself an observer: “I like to observe people and the relationship between them. We live together in this world for so many years, yet we still make the same mistakes: war, poverty, hunger, racial division, ecology, money. These subjects are as immortal and timeless as art.” Karolina Prymlewicz, curator of the Museum of Caricature and Cartoon Art in Warsaw, says “As an artist, Kuczynski is deeply involved and uncompromising in his political judgements and social diagnoses. He exploits the aesthetics

96 |

of surrealism, makes skilful use of visual metaphors…and black humour is definitely his element. “Technical mastery and the nearly photographic realism of his scenes enhance the effect of astonishment in the viewer who faces this artistic world for the first time. In Kuczynski’s works, the sad truth about human conditions, about social, political and environmental threats takes definite shape and is no longer abstract.” Kuczynski believes, “Metaphor is a universal language. Sometimes one good metaphor can explain better than hundreds of words. I try to describe the world without using words. It’s hard, but I derive great pleasure when people understand my ‘cartoons’. http://pawelkuczynski.com/Prace/Cartoons/

There’s a time to be bold. And a time to be cautious.

With 51 of his 63 wins coming from knockouts, Jack Dempsey’s bold boxing style had made him the most feared man in the sport. But when an outright underdog took his title by forcing him to go the full ten rounds, he learnt a valuable lesson. You can’t always rely on a bold approach to lead you to victory. Which is why, when it comes to investing, we never take anything as a given, and always utilise the power of restraint. Because knowing when to be bold, and when to be cautious, makes all the difference. And that’s what makes us Wealthsmiths™.

But better still - try to find somebody whose life has given them vodka, and have the mother of all parties!!!

Life doesn’t have any hands, but MAN!!! it can sure give you a slap sometimes.

We are all here on earth to help others; what on earth the others are here for I don’t know.

number of moments that take your breath away.

He reduces height and spots a man below. He lowers the balloon farther and shouts, “Excuse me! Can you tell me where I am?” The man below says: “Yes, you’re in a hotair balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field.” “You must be an engineer,” says the balloonist. “I am,” replies the man. “How did you know?” “Well,” says the balloonist, “everything you have told me is technically correct, but it’s no use to anyone.” The man below says, “You must be in management.” “I am,” replies the balloonist, “but how did you know?” “Well,” says the man, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going, but you expect me to be able to help. You’re in the same position you were before we met, but now it’s my fault.”

China remains one of the finest places to extract alpha C

hina had a weak first quarter of 2016, almost exclusively due to a very poor January before the market stabilised in February and started to rally in March. January’s large fall was driven both by global and Chinese factors. From a global perspective, after the first interest rate hike in December, the market began pricing in a very hawkish stance from US central bank leading to falls in risk assets around the world, including China. Markets in Japan and Europe fell by a similar amount to China. In March, the Chinese market rose by over 10%, recovering around half of its January losses. This after the US central bank was seen as likely to hike rates less aggressively than previously indicated, together with improving economic indicators in China. By late March some economic data out of China had started to improve, such as trade and manufacturing. However we have seen this type of bounce before, and Prescient’s composite indicator is showing that it is too early to say that China has started a cyclical rebound though there are some signs of green shoots. Where the economy is concerned, there are fears of massive capital flight as well as the devaluation of China’s renminbi (RMB). The common story is that China’s economy has massive overcapacity as well as a huge debt load, which will result in slower growth and deflation. Unsustainable levels of debt will lead to a massive banking crisis and a significant devaluation in the currency. We think the real picture is a lot more nuanced than what has been presented in the media. Even if one accepts the above premise, the outcome is quite uncertain. Consider Japan in the late 80s. Coming into its

110 |

crisis, the Japanese yen strengthened from 300 to the US$ to 150, which was the weakest levels the currency ever got during their subsequent economic stagnation that spanned 30 years. This occurred - in spite of growth evaporating, and debt continuing to grow. What happened? A steady current account surplus continued

Liang Du (MBA, CQF, CFA, BBusSc) Liang Du is the co-head of Asset Allocation at Prescient Investment Management, responsible for asset allocation decisions across Prescient portfolios. Liang was also the driving force behind investing in China, and together with his team is responsible for all investments in China.

to ensure demand for the yen, debt was rolled over with limited default, and domestic savers were more than able to absorb the debt. China has some characteristics that are similar to Japan, with an unwillingness to accept defaults, a world record trade surplus, and debt that is held by locals being some of the common points. Yet there are some crucial differences. China has only 25% of the GDP per capita of the US, whereas Japan was sitting

at 80% of GDP per capita of the US at the start of its crisis. China has a much higher chance of making better use of its human capital and to boost growth, while in Japan growth can only come from technological advances. The market has priced in China’s crisis, while at the height of the Japanese market PE ratios were between 40 and 50. Currently the Chinese market PE is barely 13. Had the Japanese market been trading at a PE of 13 at that time, equity investments would still have delivered very good real returns in the subsequent 30 years. That said, China does have challenges it has to face, with internationalisation and liberalisation of the economy amongst its top priorities. However, with capital markets in China priced as they are, as well as opportunities in financial liberalisation, we think there are many investment opportunities in China for a very profitable investment. Prescient Investment Management’s entire China investment team has now moved to Shanghai. Being based on the mainland means we will be better situated to provide a unique, on-the-ground perspective of what is happening in China. The end of the first quarter provides a full three-year history of the Prescient China Balanced Fund. For our clients who have been invested with us over the past three years, we are happy to report that by almost all measures this has been one of the best performing funds in the world. Hudway Glass Head-Up Display The company believes that automotive HUDs would be safer than an instrument-panel display or a smartphone; unfortunately, existing solutions are expensive and many of them just remain as concepts due to a complicated development process. This device offers a simple and affordable way to use your phone while driving without being distracted.

Using this device, it eliminates many problems associated with projecting an image onto a windshield such as the lack of a reflection during daytime, or doubling of the image, and many other problems. The prototype was introduced at CebIT 2015 and has received so many positive responses so far from consumers, dealers, and retailers, and even major representatives of the automotive industry. To start using Hudway Glass Head-Up Display, simply use a smartphone to start an app that supports HUD mode. Then place your smartphone on a cradle with its display up, and that’s it. Swimming Pool Table by Rain Norlan Whisky Glass offers you a perfect whisky drinking experience Whisky is a distilled alcoholic beverage made up of hundreds of compounds, and just like wine, with proper aeration. The volatile undesirable elements will evaporate faster than desirable aromatic, flavourful ones, giving you a concentration of the aromatics. Norlan Whisky Glass has been carefully designed and developed to offer you a perfect whisky drinking experience through the combination of design, science, and sociology. The combination of science performing inside and with aesthetic beauty performing outside, this glass aims to capture a whisky’s complex perfume by delivering it to your senses better than any existing whisky glass on the market. The specially developed protrusion which forms inside the glass is adapted through studying biomimicry. When swirled around the glass, fluid forms a standing wave shape, thus, increasing the surface to air ratio and rate of oxidization. The effect is usually that more ethanol evaporates. By

112 |

reducing the volatility, it allows whisky to become even more expressive. The Norlan Whisky Glass offers this feature through its special design that no other whisky glass could do for you. The second main feature is the shape of the inner walls, they close as they rise and then flare out again to avoid hitting the nose. The height and diametre has been carefully designed to ensure that aromatics focuses on the nose while diffusing the ethanol away from the face. This process will improve the taste of your whisky.. Designer: Sruli Recht

Swimming Pool Table, as its name suggests, looks like a miniature of a swimming pool in your living room. Designed by Rain design studio, this table looks really cool as the inspiration came from dreamlike images of leisure and good times when you see a swimming pool. Rain releases a set of collections composed of low tables with different heights that can be used together or separately. Each table is made of matte powder-coated steel with a glass top, the ladder accessory can be placed in different positions, allowing you to create your own swimming pool story. Kano Computer and Coding Kit teaches children to create technology, not just consume it The Kano Computer and Coding Kit is a great tool used to teach children about building their own computer, just like LEGO. It’s the first step for parents to introduce their children to science, art, coding, hardware, and even more. Kano Kit is a computer that anyone can build, simply follow the storybooks and the simple steps to start building the computer. This award winning product has been designed based on 10,000 hours of research with educators, artists, and children. It’s a fun way to teach our younger generation who want to create technology, not just consume it. Together with Kano, children can build a computer with plug and play pieces, they can also create music and artwork using code. Instead of playing games, they can now create one such as Snake or Pong. This real computer can be used to build servers, radios, websites, or even do homework. Designer: Kano

Baggage Guidelines

At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.

Our rules pertaining to baggage include the following allowance, with maximum weight of 7 kg each, and maximum size 55 x 38 x 20 cm; plus an overcoat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a ladies hand bag, a reasonable amount of reading material, and a laptop. We also allow a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches as hand baggage.

Nevertheless, many of our goals, dreams and aspirations, require financial provision to enable them and therefore the question of “how much is enough?” becomes relevant in each of our lives. You need to ask yourself where are you now and where do you want to be in the future and through advice led financial planning we can help you answer these questions and ensure that you have a plan that equips you to reach your own definition of wealth. Our research has shown that in most instances where individuals fail financially it is because they do not have a plan. This may seem quite a simple statement to make, and in essence it really is, however when thought through pragmatically, everything requires planning. Whether you are an entrepreneur or a successful rugby team you need a plan in order to have any chance of success.

wealth. Therefore choosing wealth is as much about having the means to pursue your dreams, as it is about discipline and keeping your eye on the plan you have set out to achieve. This might be to pay for your child’s or grandchild’s education, being able to afford the car you always wanted, paying off the house or traveling carefree around the world. Whatever your vision of wealth may be, the management of your money and the discipline to stick to your plan is the bedrock to attain your wealth. To know how much is enough for the lifestyle you want to live and how to properly have your money working for you, speak to those that know that wealth is not just about money, it is the philosophy on which to base your lifestyle and maintain or improve it as you see fit whilst having the financial means to do so.
