IT DIDN’T TAKE A SPLIT SECOND TO TAKE THIS PICTURE IT TOOK 6 YEARS

This isn’t a lucky shot. It’s one of 720 000 exposures, taken over six years of visiting the same kingfisher hide. Scottish photographer Alan McFadyen’s goal was to capture the exact moment a diving kingfisher was perfectly symmetrical to its reflection. It had to be flawlessly straight and without a single splash. The result speaks for itself. At Allan Gray we value this kind of commitment. NATURE CONSERVATION

Mountain zebra and citizen science You, as a visitor to Etosha National Park, can play an active role in assisting research on Namibia’s iconic Hartmann’s mountain zebra. Your help can make a big difference.

Words and photographs by: Prof Morris Gosling, Newcastle University, UK

K

een on photography? Great, because photographs taken in Etosha National Park can be used to track individual life histories as part of the Mountain Zebra Project, based at the Namibia Nature Foundation. But first, let’s distinguish mountain zebra from plains zebra. There are two species of zebra in Namibia. Burchell’s zebra a type of plains zebra - are the ones that refuse to leave the road when you are driving through Etosha National Park. Plains zebra are widely spread across the central plains of Africa and most people have seen the same species in films of the Serengeti migrations where plains zebra are often mixed in with tens of thousands of wildebeest. But there is another species in Namibia, an animal with a completely different character, altogether wilder, and sometimes noisy and irascible - the Hartmann’s mountain zebra. Mountain zebra live mainly in the rocky escarpment that runs the entire length of Namibia from north to south. The mountains are their refuge, and the permanent springs harbored by the mountains, are their source of water. Like all equids, mountain zebra are water-dependent and must drink every day. In the summer rains when the sandy and gravel plains are sometimes covered with a green flush of grass and water pools are widespread, mountain zebra leave their upland refuge to take advantage of this resource and to lay down fat reserves. But these resources are transient and often under competition from livestock and other wildlife. As they are depleted, mountain zebra return to their mountain redoubts to subsist on the vegetation that has hopefully recovered there. But this simple pattern is often disrupted by patchy and unpredictable rainfall, and mountain zebra then move flexibly, sometimes over long distances, to wherever rain falls and there is grass to be eaten.

The mountain zebra project A key aim of the Mountain Zebra Project is to monitor variation in numbers and to understand why they vary. This is not just a fascinating basic question, it is also vital for planning conservation management of any protected species. In the case of mountain zebra, their numbers could sometimes be limited by predators (as perhaps in Etosha National Park) or by limited food (as for example in the semi-desert parts of their range in the south). Research on these alternatives can be done using top-down techniques, for example by counting populations in air surveys, or by recognising individual animals, following their lives, and then analyzing what they do collectively (in the same way as we would study a population of humans from its individual members).

Zebra stripes are as individually distinctive as fingerprints The reason that population biologists do not always use such an obvious approach is partly because of the difficulty of identifying individual animals. Sometimes they admit defeat and resort to ear-tags and leg rings. But increasingly, researchers have come up with ingenious ways to recognize animals using their natural features. And zebras provide a wonderful opportunity because the stripes of each individual are as distinctive as human fingerprints. When an animal has been photographed, it can be followed for the rest of its life, and even identified after death. The actual process of identifying an individual can take two forms. One is to use so-called pattern recognition software,

AUGUST 2017 | FLAMINGO

15

NATURE CONSERVATION

the same sort of software that police forces use to identify a human fingerprint at the scene of a crime. The second is to code stripe variants and use the codes as a sort of bar code. The co-ordinator of the Mountain Zebra Project, Professor Morris Gosling, has developed a unique version of the bar code system and can identify an individual zebra in less than a minute. And speed is necessary because there are sometimes a lot of zebras.

But first, photograph your zebra Mountain zebra are a Specially Protected Species and can only be hunted or culled under license from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. They are often shot because they compete with livestock for food and, as a result, in many parts of the country they start running away before it is possible to take a good quality photograph. And photographs have to be of reasonable quality to capture detail of the stripes. Two main approaches are in use to obtain useful photos.

ABOVE, TOP TO BOTTOM Mountain zebra and Burchell’s zebra overlap in the western part of Etosha NP and these photos show the difference between the two species. Above is a Hartmann’s mountain zebra and below a Burchell’s zebra (a type of plains zebra). The stripes of all zebra are incredibly variable between individuals but these two are reasonably typical. Key features of the mountain zebra are the ‘gridiron’ pattern above the base of the tail, the strongly striped legs all the way down to the hooves, the distinct dewlap, and a relatively large number of thin stripes over the body. In contrast, the Burchell’s has distinct ‘shadow stripes’, particularly on the rump, a smaller number of thick main stripes, fainter stripes on the lower parts of the legs (white socks) and a ‘neater’, black-edged mane. The photograph of mountain zebra is also an example of an image that is useful for individual recognition in the mountain zebra study.

The first is to take advantage of the water-dependence of the zebra and place camera traps next to the place the zebra drink. Thousands of photographs can be taken in this way and eventually, among the photographs of other animals and photographs of zebra that do not show enough detail, by chance, you will find good working photos of known individuals. Or if the animals are not previously known, photos that are good enough to set up new IDs. The second approach is to take the time to photograph animals in the wild, usually from a car with a telephoto lens. This tried and tested approach has been enormously enhanced in recent years by the development of digital photography which allows instant checks of whether images are good enough. Of course the use of normal photography is much easier in places where mountain zebras are more approachable. This is usually the case in Parks where animals generally become tamer because they see so many vehicles without any ill effects.

Etosha National Park is one such place where mountain zebra are far tamer than in places where they may be persecuted and where they thus offer excellent opportunities for photography. Mountain Zebra are largely confined to the western part of the Park, the area known as Otjovasandu, which contains the famous Dolomite Lodge and the new Olifantrus Campsite. The best places to see mountain zebra (sometimes mixed in with Burchell’s zebra, so be careful with identification!) is around the waterholes provided by the Park. Five waterholes are the most likely to produce good sightings and photographs of mountain zebra and they have the wonderful names of Dolomietpunt (near to the Lodge), Klippan, Rateldraf, Rhenostervlei and

Jakkalswater. Sometimes there are mountain zebra groups when you first arrive at a waterhole, drinking, rolling in mud or dust wallows, chasing and fighting between groups, or just waiting while elephants monopolise the waterhole. But often they appear walking in file when you least expect them, perhaps when you have been distracted by all the other amazing wildlife that makes this such a spectacular Park; the full suite of Namibian predators including lions and spotted hyenas (the main predators of zebra), elephants, giraffes and many more. The presence of elephants is incidentally one of the main reasons why normal photography is the technique of choice for monitoring individual mountain zebra in Etosha. Elephants would make mincemeat of most camera traps and so the contribution of visitors in helping monitor this mountain zebra population is particularly valuable.

Charlie Summers from the USA, when this animal was less than a year old, shows that the animal was exactly 9 years old when first coded. Hopefully she will be photographed many times and the full story of her life discovered. This example shows that historical photos as well as current ones are important. Another photograph by Konrad Wothe (from Germany) in 1997 was of two animals which were not previously known but was taken at Okaukuejo and thus showed a rare movement by mountain zebra far to the east of their heartland in Otjovasandu. And Joe and Julie Grohs from Canada, who love Namibia and its wildlife, have visited Etosha a number of times and their photographs have added new individuals and resightings of old friends to the project.

Our zebras need you The value of citizen science Contribution by the general public to serious scientific projects is becoming increasingly common - citizen science. What form does it take in the Mountain Zebra Project? Basically, conservation projects are usually run on a shoestring and professional biologists can only visit their study sites for relatively brief periods, while visitors to Etosha can potentially monitor mountain zebras continuously. And modern communications systems allow photographs to be sent in a way not previously possible either as attachments to email, via Dropbox or to the Facebook page set up for this project (https://www.facebook. com/EtoshaHMZ). The photographs should ideally be of the right sides of the body (this convention is adopted in the study because of the large amount of time needed for coding images) but other views are also potentially valuable as are photos of interesting behaviour, evidence of predation and so on.

Examples of information Examples of the sort of information that can be obtained are from a female who was already fully grown (over 2 years old) when first added to the Etosha ID library in 2012. Chance discovery of a photograph taken in 2003, by wildlife photographer

So, if you are lucky enough to go to western Etosha, please send your photos of the right sides of mountain zebras to Morris Gosling of the NNF Mountain Zebra Project. He will tell you which individual animals you have photographed, something about their extraordinary lives and how your input is helping the conservation of this amazing animal.

The Mountain Zebra Project is supported by the Rufford Foundation, the Whitley Fund for Nature, the Parc Zoologique de Montpellier, the Gaia Nature Fund and by public donation. The project is hosted by the Namibia Nature Foundation whose dedicated staff provides vital logistical and administrative support. Other partners in Namibia include the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Gondwana Canyon Park, Ai-Ais National Park, NamibRand Nature Reserve, Buellsport Guest Farm, the Namib-Naukluft Nation Park, Hobatere Lodge and Etosha National Park.

The land of wine and olives Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate is an Italian masterpiece at the southern tip of Africa

20

AUGUST 2017 | FLAMINGO

ADVERTORIAL

When I first saw Morgenster it was love at first sight,” smiles Giulio Bertrand, the Italian owner of Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate in Somerset West outside Cape Town. “Then, coincidentally, some years after I arrived here, I found out that the ancestors of the Huguenot settler who first bought and established Morgenster in 1711, originated in the valleys of Piedmont where I also come from!” Serendipity. Morgenster did well to attract this Italian settler to its location in one of the most beautiful areas of the western Cape winelands. Since 1992, when Bertrand bought the Estate, it has been flourishing under his vision, energy and commitment to excellence which have attracted world attention to its extra virgin olive oil and well-aged Bordeaux and Italian styled wines. It was Bertrand’s appreciation of the country, its climate and lifestyle that led to his decision to purchase a retirement home here. After moving to Morgenster, Bertrand preserved and restored the historic buildings and manor house and while doing so, fell under the spell of his farm’s beauty… and the hill in his back yard which reminded him of Italy. He undertook a systematic mapping of the terroir and learnt that he had bought exceptional land that could produce wine and olives of great quality. Putting retirement on hold and with a lifelong philosophy of producing only the best, he set out to produce world class Bordeaux-styled wine and the highest quality Italian-style extra virgin olive oil.

Ties to Chateau Cheval Blanc and Bordeaux In 1997 Bertrand travelled to Bordeaux to source the winemaking expertise he needed. Accustomed to working only with the best, he met with Pierre Lurton of Château Cheval Blanc and enticed him to Morgenster. Pierre too succumbed to its magic and has been a consultant to the Estate ever since. He serves on the Board of Directors and visits the farm at least once a year, involving himself in decision-making around the vineyards and cellar. Bertrand’s brief to Lurton was to emulate the best of Bordeaux wines, that age well, with tannins as smooth as cashmere. Few wines are cellared for decades, so Bertrand took on this responsibility to showcase his wines after the benefit of ageing in pristine conditions. Today, the Estate has a unique offering: a vertical collection of several vintages of Bordeaux style Morgenster Reserve and Morgenster Lourens River Valley providing customers with both volume and continuity.

The Morgenster Italian Collection Bertrand realised his dream of producing wines from Italian cultivars in South Africa by importing superior clones of Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. He and his winemaker visit and stay in touch with the best Italian producers of wines from these varietals, learning how they think and work with the grapes. Names of his Italian Collection wines reflect his great love for opera. Morgenster Nabucco is 100% nebbiolo; Morgenster Tosca is a Super Tuscan blend, Morgenster Caruso is a 100% Sangiovese rosé.

ADVERTORIAL

“Where there is quality, there is no compromise” – Giulio Bertrand

In italy, where there are vines, there are olives In the early ‘90s South Africa had no olive oil culture. After two years of bringing in good Italian olive oil in his hand-luggage, Bertrand approached the Olive Oil Research Institute of Italy. With Professor Fontanazza he chose 14 olive cultivars from all the different Italian regions, each with discernible attributes and a reputation for producing exceptional quality olive oil. After importing 2000 small trees of these varieties and propagating them in the nursery on his farm, he used the most up to date

equipment and expertise to produce his flagship Morgenster extra virgin olive oil. For over a decade this secret blend of 14 Italian varieties has consistently been judged as one of the best olive oils in the world, and like the Estate’s wines, is exported internationally. In pursuing his own quality and excellence objectives Bertrand effectively rebirthed South Africa’s olive oil industry. Today, 4.3 million of the 5 million trees planted in South Africa since 1994 are descendants of Bertrand’s original 2000 imported

Sharpen Your Pencil Lisandro Pena not only wields a wonderful pencil, but with some of his wildlife drawings, a percentage of the sales goes to wildlife conservation

Did you study art at school/college? I've never had any formal art training, except for picking up some How to Draw books, so you can say I’m a self-taught artist and I'm extremely proud of that. I remember having so many questions about drawing and wanting to improve, but not having someone to answer them. My need to improve always pushed me to learn by trial and error. There were certain artists I found online that pushed me to improve and I remember spending hours practicing. With time and practice, I began using a technique that my artwork is now known for - it gives the hair on my animal drawings much more realism. Nowadays, with You Tube, Instagram, and Google, it makes it so much easier to access learning sources. Throughout the years I have learned so much and for that reason, I have a section on my website where I share tips and techniques for others wanting to learn. I know how it is to want to improve because I've been there and I have no problem sharing some of my knowledge.

Edited by: Anne Schauffer Photographs of drawings by: Lisandro Pena

L

isandro Peña was born in El Salvador, and the civil war forced the family to take refuge in Canada when he was only eight years old. He’s lived the majority of his life in Canada, but he’ll never forget the country in which he was born, especially his days out in nature. Even though Lisandro left El Salvador, he brought his love of wildlife with him. Along with memories of being outdoors, he also remembers drawing at home and school, but it was in Canada that he truly got into drawing. Coming to Canada not knowing the language was an intimidating experience, and drawing really helped him to cope with the change: “It made me feel confident being able to express myself with art. I was able to create my own world on paper and, in time, I found I had a talent for drawing.” Flamingo asked Lisandro some questions about life and art.

Did you have a creative childhood? Definitely. Back home, I remember my aunt teaching me to colour within the lines. Creativity certainly runs in the family. My grandmother was a talented seamstress and I have other family members who are singers, dancers and are part of a music group. My dad was artistic as well, from some of the stories I have been told by family members. When I was younger, I thought I was the only creative one. From my three siblings, I'm the one that is visually artistic but within the last few years, my younger brother has shown that he is talented with painting. Ever since I can remember I've been artistic and as a child, I always enjoyed drawing comic book characters, animals and anything that interested me. My parents always nurtured my creativity, and I'm so blessed to have had their support and they have seen me grow as an artist.

How did you start on this journey with pencil drawings? Even though I have tried all other mediums, I always find myself coming back to pencil. It's a medium I'm truly passionate about and love to work with. I've used pencil for drawing since I was a kid, but it was in high school that I really fell in love with the pencil. I did a drawing of Mother Theresa for a school art show. Seeing the amount of detail that I achieved got me hooked, and it’s one of my most sentimentally valuable drawings. When I first started drawing seriously, my focus was to copy the picture as accurately as possible. Over the years I realized that each drawing is my creation. I had the ability to add, remove or incorporate any details that weren't in the original reference image. Each of my drawings is a representation of how I see that object. Even though I love realism, my goal is to express on paper how I see it in my head. As I drew more and more, it was a natural transition into animal drawings. Growing up I was also a big fan of black and white photography and work by Ansel Adams was a big influence. I love the contrast of black and white photography, and pencil allowed me to imitate that dramatic look that his photographs had. Drawing with a pencil has a special significance. To me, it's not just a pencil, it’s a fine, delicate, accurate tool. I've always been fascinated with the thought of a very fine pencil tip covering a whole sheet of paper with tiny lines and marks that come together to create a full drawing. There is nothing more beautiful than that, at least to me. Since high school, my appreciation and love for pencil has grown and I see so much more undiscovered potential in my future work.

Do you draw everything? I love to draw anything, but I prefer drawing animals. Apart from my love of wildlife, the variety of animals out there fascinates me and inspires me to draw them. I do accept commissions for people or pets though. I do have certain animals that I enjoy drawing more than others. For example, I enjoy drawing big cats. African Wild Dogs are so incredibly beautiful and I have

always enjoyed drawing them. I have a huge fascination with drawing eyes. Eyes are so unique to each animal and I have always been intrigued by them. They truly are the windows to the souls. I also believe that, like people, all animals are unique in their own way. They have personalities and a story to tell. I try to capture their essence, especially through their eyes. The eyes can show aggression, sadness, anger and just the wear of a long, hard life. Every animal that I draw is a representation of how I see it. I have this image of them in my head and I work to match that image while trying to capture their “personality” and I try to give them life on paper. It's not just about drawing them to look realistic. I want to tell a story and I want the viewer to add a chapter to that story when they see it. There should be a connection with the viewer. Every tiger that I have drawn has been unique. No animal is ever the same, even within their own species and I strive to show that.

Tell me where you work from, where you sell from? I work from a home studio, my private little place. It’s where I enjoy working and where I can be alone with whatever I'm drawing. Working from a home studio allows me to have much more freedom, but in the future, if my drawings keep getting larger, I will look for a larger area to work in. I primarily sell my work from my website http://store.onlypencil.com but I also sell work at local art show exhibits and fairs. Anyone that is interested can also contact me through my email onlypencil@ gmail.com for commissions. I also have exclusive artwork listed on my Instagram account, @onlypencil.

Describe your life now? I’m now concentrating on large scale drawing and I try to spend as much time on them as possible. My current work in progress is a drawing of a screaming chimp. This drawing measures 30"x40" and with what I have so far, it will be one of my most detailed drawings to date. The large scale allows me to add quite a bit of detail to them, which is why some of these drawings may take a few months to complete. It’s a long process, but in the end, it's always worth it. I can sometimes work up to 12 hours a day, but I would not trade this for anything, I love it!!

There are days that I need to step back and just look at what I'm working on and do some mental drawing. This means, imagining the process for whatever I need to draw next. For example, a section that has lots of hair or an area with rough skin. I picture myself drawing that section using different techniques and constantly ask myself if that would work until I'm confident enough to test it out on paper. This process allows me to mentally prepare so that when I do start drawing, I can follow a mental blueprint. So far this method has not failed me and it's part of my drawing process. I can also be a night owl, so there are times that I spend the whole night drawing.

What’s in the future? Apart from growing as an artist, I want my art to help as well. I want to continue into wildlife conservation and I want my artwork to have an impact on helping save endangered wildlife. I may not solve the problems with endangered animals, but I want to help, however I can. A portion of sales from prints and original artwork is donated to conservation organizations. I have a limited print run currently in my art store of an African wild dog and portion of those sales I'm donating to painteddog.org. I want my art to play a part in helping those endangered animals that I love to draw so much and I also want to bring awareness to the problem. Future generations should have the opportunity to enjoy them in person if they have the opportunity to do so and not just through pictures or artwork.

A worldclass wine estate Vergelegen, ‒ established 317 years ago in Somerset West, South Africa, ‒ is a treasure trove of wine, food, exquisite gardens, culture and biodiversity.

ambling over 3000 hectares between the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland mountains, within easy reach of Cape Town, Vergelegen wine estate is a multi-layered destination that’s ideal for both tourists and locals eager to sample the best of the Western Cape in one easy trip. About 100 000 visitors – half of whom are based beyond South Africa’s borders – travel to the outstanding estate every year. Vergelegen offers something for everybody, whether you’re a passionate gourmet and wine lover, gardening enthusiast, history buff, or simply want to enjoy a relaxed and delicious family lunch while your children frolic in the state-of-the-art playground. It’s no surprise that Vergelegen received the International Best of Wine Tourism, Cape Winelands accolade last year for an unprecedented fifth time. Since these awards started in 1999, no other property has won the international prize as often. Vergelegen MD Don Tooth attributes the estate’s appeal to meticulous restoration of and care for its priceless heritage, coupled with strategic investment to ensure that it remains sustainable for future generations to enjoy. “The estate was bought from the Barlow family by the current owner, Anglo American, in 1987,” he says. “The buildings and grounds were restored to their former glory and opened to the public. There was also investment in the vineyards, which is ongoing, with the long-term goal of producing a superlative wine on a par with the best in the world. “About seven years ago, we also reviewed our hospitality assets. After careful consideration and receiving expert architectural, heritage and environmental opinion, we received Board approval to go ahead for the long-term benefit of the estate.”

The result? A welcoming wine tasting centre, a family-friendly bistro (known as Stables) with incredible views of the magnificent Hottentots Holland mountains, and a signature restaurant, Camphors. Within its first year of operation, Camphors was included in the coveted South African Eat Out top ten restaurants, an accolade it received again last year. “Wine is the starting point at Camphors and I collaborate with our sommelier, Christo Deyzel, on new dishes from their inception,” says Camphors Executive Chef Michael Cooke. “Every course is carefully crafted to match perfectly with selected Vergelegen varietals and vintages, ultimately providing our guests with a multi-sensory dining experience. “As the signature restaurant of an historic estate, we reflect the wide variety of produce that is available in this area. We source numerous ingredients from the farm’s gardens, orchards and pastures. Many diners are amazed at the results as they are not aware of the wide variety of produce available, and the extraordinary dishes that can be produced.” Before or after a meal, many Vergelegen visitors enjoy strolling through the estate’s magnificent 18 gardens and viewing historical highlights. The estate’s 60 hectare cultural heritage area includes the meticulously restored homestead, which is furnished with beautiful antiques, porcelain and objets d’art. It also houses an interpretive centre. A layered historicism of furniture represents the various influences over the past three centuries – French, Cape Dutch and Anglo-Indian. The SA National Gallery has also loaned paintings and bronzes for the homestead, acknowledging the role of onetime owner Lady Florence Phillips in restoring Vergelegen and

helping to establish many cultural institutions in South Africa. There is also a library (a converted wine cellar built in 1816) housing over 4500 books that belonged to her husband, mining magnate and philanthropist Sir Lionel Phillips. “Vergelegen traces its origins back to when land was granted to Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1700. He soon expanded it into a model country estate with a beautiful homestead, corn mill and other subsidiary buildings,” says Tooth. “Van der Stel’s achievements were remarkable: he laid out fruit orchards and orange groves, planted camphors and oaks, cultivated half a million vine stocks and established 18 cattle stations with 1000 cattle and 18000 sheep. An ancient ‒ yet still thriving ‒ mulberry tree in the gardens is a reminder of his efforts to establish a silk industry at the Cape.” The mulberry tree is just one of a host of horticultural attractions, says Gardens Manager Richard Arm. Some of the best-known are five magnificent 300-year-old camphor trees, standing proudly in front of the homestead, that were declared national monuments in 1942. There’s also Africa’s oldest living oak tree; an ancient yellowwood; and a giant oak grown from an acorn from one of the last royal oaks at England’s Blenheim Palace, home to the dukes of Marlborough and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. New attractions, on the other hand, include a magnificent, world-class rose garden, displaying dozens of different rose varieties. It’s situated alongside a magical camphor forest, where guests enjoy elegant white table cloth picnics during the summer months. “This undertaking took 1200 tonnes of virgin soil, 90 tonnes of peach pips, 40 tonnes of compost and 1500 new roses,” says Arm. The extensive collection of roses – many specially chosen for their glorious scent, as well as beautiful appearance – spans miniatures to rambling climbers, heritage blooms and newlybred hybrids. “Vergelegen’s magnificent camellia collection also draws flower lovers from throughout South Africa and abroad, during winter. It is the only International Camellia Garden of Excellence in Africa, and one of only 39 in the world.”

Not only the vineyards and gardens, but also the natural beauty and indigenous riches of this enormous estate are being restored to their full potential. In a programme believed to be the largest private conservation project in South Africa, 2200 hectares of non-arable farm land are being restored to their natural state. The programme has resulted already in the clearing of about 2000 hectares. In the process, it has generated over 230 jobs for previously unemployed and untrained people. They work in areas ranging from bush cutting to driving and hand-picking and spraying alien seedlings. To help monitor the post-clearing ecosystem recovery, Vergelegen conducts monthly bird counts, identifies wild flowers and (using infra-red camera systems) monitors wildlife movement. Species such as the Cape leopard, caracal, grey rhebok and spotted genet are regularly viewed on the footage, reports Jacques van Rensburg, Vergelegen’s Environmental Project Manager. At least 279 plant species have been recorded on the farm, including 22 on the Red Data List. The estate has recorded 145 bird species, with frequent sightings of Verreaux eagles, fish eagles and malachite sunbirds. Even bontebok, once considered the rarest antelope in the world, thrive at Vergelegen and now number 34 animals. In recognition of its commitment to conserving the Cape’s biodiversity for future generations, Vergelegen was the first local wine farm to receive championship status in the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (2005). It also received a Mail & Guardian newspaper Greening the Future award. With all these attractions, it’s no wonder that visitors continue to return to the estate year after year. Whether your tastes tend more to culture and history, or to the great outdoors, Vergelegen and its many attractions are worth a visit on your next trip to South Africa. See www.verglegen.co.za. The estate is open Monday-Sunday 09h30-17h00 (last entry 16h00). Entrance R10/adults and R5/pensioners and scholars, pensioners free on Mondays. Mercedes-Benz Concept X-CLASS First outlook on the new pickup bearing the three-pointed star

Outlook on the X-Class

One of the last gaps in the portfolio

With the Concept X-CLASS, Mercedes-Benz gives a concrete outlook on its new pickup, the X-Class. The first premium pickup will combine the best of two worlds. This is demonstrated impressively by Mercedes-Benz with two design variants of the concept car. The Concept X-CLASS powerful adventurer illustrates that the future X-Class will possess all the strengths of a classic pickup – tough, functional, strong, and with off-road capability. The Concept X-CLASS stylish explorer goes a step further and shows what will distinguish the pickup bearing the Mercedes star. The X-Class will be a true Mercedes from the hallmark brand design and comfort to the driving dynamics and safety.

The brand bearing the three-pointed star will become the first premium manufacturer to occupy the promising segment of midsize pickups. Daimler AG will make investments in the high nine figures (euro) in the new model series by the time of the market launch. It will be launched in late 2017 under the name MercedesBenz X-Class. The key markets will be Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Australia with New Zealand, and Europe. Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “With the Mercedes-Benz pickup, we will close one of the last gaps in our portfolio. Our target: We want to offer customers vehicles matching their specific needs. The X-Class will set new standards in a growing segment.”

The world’s first true premium pickup “We will open up and change the segment of mid-size pickups with the world’s first true premium pickup for the modern urban lifestyle,” says Volker Mornhinweg, Head of MercedesBenz Vans. “Our future X-Class will be a pickup that knows no compromise. Ladder-type frame, high-torque six-cylinder engine, and permanent all-wheel drive are compulsory for us. As an added value, we bring safety, comfort, agility, and expressive design – in other words, everything that distinguishes vehicles bearing the Mercedes star. We will thus appeal to new customers who have not considered owning a pickup before.”

Perfect fit for the urban environment The specially constructed suspension with wide axles, a five-link rear axle with coil springs, and a precisely calibrated spring/damper set-up will ensure a high ride comfort – on the road and off the road. The pickup bearing the three-pointed star will impress with precise steering, a comfortable ride, and agile cornering. It will absorb bumps in a superior fashion, making it a perfect fit for the urban environment. As is the norm for Mercedes-Benz, customers of the X-Class will be able to choose from different equipment scopes to customise the exterior and interior.

Top-of-the-line: V6 diesel and 4MATIC Variety will likewise distinguish the engine range. The topof-the-line model will be powered by a V6 diesel in combination with 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive. The high-torque engine will provide high driving dynamics on the road and off the road. The all-wheel-drive system will combine an electronic traction system, a transfer case with reduction gear, and two differential locks. The traction system and the electrically operated ondemand differential locks channel the power to where traction is best. Under extreme off-road conditions, the rear differential and the inter-axle differential can be locked. This will make it possible to safely master difficult obstacles and inclines. The powerful drive system and the tough ladder-type frame will make a payload of more than 1.1 tonnes and a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes possible. Enough power for transporting some four cubic metres of firewood on the pickup bed and a sail boat hooked up to the trailer coupling, for example.

Comfort and value appeal Thanks to the tried and proven modular strategy, a host of interior components that customers know and appreciate from the C-Class and V-Class will be found in the X-Class – from the perfectly finished high-quality materials and the infotainment system to the ergonomic seating comfort. As a result, the pickup will offer the “welcome home” feeling typical of the brand, and define a new level of comfort and value appeal in the segment of mid-size pickups.

MOTORING

Four-midable BMW’s updated, uprated 4 Series is a compelling reminder of this Bavarian marque’s core qualities, writes a smitten JAMES SIDDALL

Y

ou know all this business you might have heard about BMWs offering Sheer Driving Pleasure, and a downright intoxicating, involving experience? I can categorically and objectively assure you that it is entirely accurate. As a journalist I have had the singular pleasure of road-testing these Bavarian machines for well over two decades, starting with the likes of the original M3 around 1994. And let it be said that should the means to acquire a mint, unmolested version of one of these cars present itself, I would be glad. But we're here to talk about the 4 Series – a range of cars that in some ways encapsulates and embodies the very best BMW has to offer. Now, to give a quick history lesson, the range was first introduced in 2013 with the spunky 4 Series Coupe based on the 3 Series, and was followed by the 4 Series Convertible, and then the 4 Series Gran Coupe. And now all three variants are in the best shape of their lives with the advent of the new BMW 4 Series – as our contingent of car journalists discovered on the recent launch in Mpumalanga province. A launch that took in serpentine roads and some

gloriously open stretches. All the better to showcase the 4 Series' crushingly ability in any conditions and circumstances. As for those styling updates, the range now boasts a restyled nose. And BMW – a company not given to frothy hyperbole – speaks of “a broad, sharply-contoured front end of threedimensional muscularity that hugs the road in sporting fashion.” Precisely. The package now also includes standard bi-LED headlights with their own aesthetic – and functional! – appeal, and some new styling touches at the rear. Better yet the already premium cabin has been elevated a few notches with the likes of electroplated inserts and finishes, to but skim the surface of things, while there are three new, elegant upholstery colours to choose from. Namely Midnight Blue Dakota leather, Cognac Dakota leather, and Ivory White Dakota leather. But enough of that. BMWs are about driving – and on the launch the first car my driving partner and I got to spend a couple of hundred kilometres with was the 320i Convertible. Now both of us have a lot of car experience between us. Certainly enough to be cynical when called for.

58

AUGUST 2017 | FLAMINGO

MOTORING

But our unanimous exclamation? “This is such a great, great car!” And so it was with this machine pouring on 135kW from it's turbo'd two-litre, hungrily munching up the miles and eating up corners with contemptuous ease – all the while providing a refined, near buffet-free driving experience. Even with the top down – which, of course, is how all convertibles should be driven. Indeed, that the 320i is essentially the “baseline” version in the 4 Series Convertible line-up seemed scarcely credible. All the same, its more potent 330i, 340i and M3 siblings do have their own addictive appeal, while the uprated suspension common to the 4 Series range made itself felt, notably under hard cornering. The decidedly elegant 4 Series Gran Coupe, meanwhile, can be had in four variants: 420i, 420d, 430i, and 440i. Power outputs vary from an entirely ample 135kW to an horizon-warping 240kW. And trust me when I say that – as with the Convertible – even the “entry-level” 420i Gran Coupe is more than sufficient for any and every conceivable application. Be it effortlessly dispatching long inter-city distances or taking on the sort of twisties we encountered on the launch in Mpumalanga. As for the 4 Series Coupe, this car speaks of sweeping drives to the south of France, maybe Cannes, and can be had in a range of flavours, namely 420i, 430i, 440i, and 420d. But as with its Convertible sibling, the halo model is the mighty M4. This iconic – and, again, we don't use the word lightly – vehicle uses a six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology to generate an epic 317kW.

Not enough for you? Both the M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible can be specified with the optional Competition Package. And as well as measures

to hone their handling properties and a variety of exclusive equipment features, Competition Package buyers also get a 14kW power hike, raising output to 331kW. Add in the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission – another option – and the M4 Coupe will erupt from zero to 100km/h in four seconds (standard 4.1 seconds). The M4 Convertible is only fractionally less ferocious with an acceleration time of 4.3 seconds (standard 4.4 seconds). What's more, both variants can also be had with a sweetshifting six-speed manual transmission. An increasing rarity in an age where even hypercars come only with a self-shifter. But – to hark back to an earlier point – if it's “merely” the 420i version of any of the three 4 Series variants you opt for, you'll be beyond satisfied. And let's not forget that in addition to an alluring array of optional extras to add to the already lavish standard kit, you can get your 4 Series in a range of cool hues. Among them, Sunset Orange and Snapper Rocks Blue. Colours that are exclusive to the 4 Series. Sheer Driving Pleasure indeed!

FOOD

“Food made with love, feeds not only the body, but also the soul” – Denise Levy, Founder of Ginger and Lime Food Studio

The Ginger & Lime Food Experience If you haven’t experienced a delectable meal or a ‘behind-thescenes foodie intervention’ at Ginger & Lime Food Studio in Cape Town, you haven’t lived as well as you could and should

D

enise Levy is Ginger & Lime Food Studio, an interactive cookery school which opened its doors three years ago, and hasn’t considered looking back. Denise is clear thinking…infused with a huge dollop of passion, “My kitchen has always been the heart of the home, a place where friends and family gather and bond over the preparation and eating of fabulous food.” It was a time in her life when she was asking herself how she could combine a passion for cooking with a business venture? Ginger & Lime was the answer. It was Denise’s pathway to opening her kitchen to others who are also passionate about food, while exploring food’s

magic ability to connect, soothe and provide an escape. To accommodate this venture, Denise needed to create her dream kitchen. Wielding an architect, a bricklayer and more, she set to reinventing her grand old lady of a home in Fresnaye, Cape Town. Today, it houses the state-of-the-art Ginger & Lime Food Studio, a kitchen that is both functional for classes and for the family. Ginger & Lime is no standard culinary experience. Step inside and leave everything ordinary and expected behind. Welcome to wonderland. A touch of the theatrical and a bit of drama is always thrown into the mix here, and guests get to experience “behind the scenes” in the food prep, where the magic really happens. This is what sets Ginger & Lime apart from other cooking schools or restaurants. For each private event or weekly interactive course, after hours of preparation, the team takes much pride and joy stepping into their roles, as if onto a stage. The spotlight is on them, the show begins, guests feel this and become transformed by this culinary whirlwind of energy, aromas and taste sensations. It’s like a night – or day - out at the theatre…but you’re on the stage too!

An interactive cooking studio – the good, the great and the glorious The interactive cooking lessons range from Asian-inspired classes through to Mediterranean classics and back to local cuisine. Denise says that Ginger & Lime allows her to indulge her

passion for food and travel, and share the knowledge gained from these trips in an easy and relaxed way. “Guests feel at home here, as if they are visiting a friend, and jump in to help where they can. They are free to come and get involved in the cooking, chopping the onions, stirring the pot, create an intricate sauce, or just sit and observe, enjoy a glass of wine and a chat with the other guests.” She laughs and says “The best parties are always in the kitchen, right?” There is nothing traditional about this cooking studio. They host a number of different events, functions and classes. In addition, they open the kitchen to a number of excellent guest chefs: Liam Tomlin (Denise’s foodie hero and personal kitchen mentor), Ivor Jones, John van Zyl, Neill Anthony, Jason Whitehead, Siphokazi, Matt Manning, Nathalie Larssen, Arabella Parkinson, Daniel Jardim, Stefan Olivier, Gordon Wright & Clara Bubenzer. “We love to learn from them and share this space with them,” Denise says.

Come on in, the flavours are fine! So, if Ginger & Lime sound like your flavours, what can you do, experience, taste and, well, party there? How’s this for a menu of possibilities: Denise says she has learnt to always give more than what is

I

started off in July 2009, having sold my shares in my little advertising agency, as I was so frustrated with no longer being the creative, but managing finances and staff which wasn't my passion or gift! Whenever I travelled overseas on business visiting top retailers for inspiration, I was so inspired by the beautiful hand made things and when looking at them, I knew we could do something similar, if not better, and – importantly -help people in need at the same time. This became my life's mission. So, not knowing what I wanted to do, but knowing I wanted to hand make beautiful things, my mission was to empower women to do so. My instinct was to work with the local HIV AIDS Centre as Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa has the highest percentage of HIV positive people in the world! Being HIV positive comes with discrimination, people don't like to share their status as it’s considered ‘taboo’ and sadly, often employers are reluctant to employ those with HIV, as they are perceived to be weak and sickly. The women, in particular, as disempowered breadwinners, have a very, very difficult time of it. I began working with two ladies twice a week from the Hillcrest Aids Centre, and we started making gorgeous little bespoke ceramic crosses out of clay, and we strung them onto velvet ribbon. I then started hand rolling clay beads to make bracelets and necklaces…and that’s where we began! The beauty of the beads was that if these HIV-positive ladies were weak and bed ridden, they could still roll beads from their beds and still earn money to provide for their families. It seemed like the perfect solution! I then made the strategic decision to start designing products around the beads, to sustain the project in order to create more work for more ladies who needed the help. By the end of 2009, I had five full time ladies working with me.

We were making a range of ceramic bead jewellery and we were very blessed to supply some of our local retailers here in South Africa, which gave us a huge boost and put us on the map! People loved our product and wanted to support our cause, so we needed to add more items to our range. We launched our first beaded chandelier at Design Indaba in Cape Town in 2010. The response was overwhelming and we started rolling beads like crazy! It was so exciting and emotional at the same time! More and more ladies approached me for employment, mostly HIV positive, but others who weren’t, but were carrying the burden of caring for family or neighbour’s children who had been left orphaned by the disease. I now had to make a call. I had started out with the mission to empower HIV positive women, but how could I discriminate and not employ those who were desperately trying to survive in the circumstances? I had to change my criteria and open my employment to any women affected by HIV. I am now even more flexible, as I just can’t turn away women in desperate need. So, as long as I am empowering our local women, I’m at peace that I'm doing the right thing.

Another important strategic decision made at the outset, was not to work in imported mass-produced plastic or wooden beads, as that wouldn't be responsible to our cause. This does come at a high price though, as the cost of raw clay, transport from the mine six hours away, distribution of the clay, labour to roll the beads, electricity costs, time for the process and the damages of unfired clay beads during transport, all adds up. Our products aren’t cheap because they have a Real Story behind them, every bead has its own journey ... from the mine in Gauteng, into the rural villages of the KZN Midlands, into a thatched mud hut, out in the sun to dry, then loaded onto a mini bus taxi to return to our workshop, ready to be fired up to 1046 degrees Celsius in our kilns. From there they are dyed or glazed, then strung in thousands to create our jewellery or chandeliers! So to answer the universal question, YES! Every single item we make and transport, has been handmade to the very last bead by our ladies. Very special I think! www.hellooow.co.za | enquiries@hellooow.co.za

Silver Forest Boutique Lodge & Spa

B

est-selling Danish author Martin Lindstrom, one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people, urges that we set aside a ‘deliberate rendezvous with our unhurried minds’ but that it demands an effort on our part. How easy it is to slip into being busy for busy’s sake frittering away precious time on the humdrum routine of the day. How best then to disentangle ourselves and live ‘in the moment’? On a meander through one of Cape Town’s most visually arresting and rewarding routes through the Winelands, commit yourself to a stay at Silver Forest Boutique Lodge and Spa in Somerset West. Here against a backdrop of the Helderberg Mountains, the lodge spa is a seduction of the senses. Treatments from warm spa baths, a sauna, an Arabian-inspired Rasul heat, steam and mud chamber and cooler hydrotherapy pool, create the ultimate luxury ‘omni’ spa – a surround-body experience for men and women that begins with their unique

melange of fragrances. Smell is one of our most powerful senses and is inextricably linked to emotion. Unforgettable and effective treatments begin with a carefully curated range of indigenous fragrances: African Ginger for body sculpting, Kalahari Melon for hydration, Mongongo Nut to detoxify and a balm of Marula and Neroli – and an utterly decadent, Life Saving Back Treatment, a chocolate-inspired massage that is other-worldly. The spa’s menu of treatments will boost your circulation, nourish your skin and revive your body. Facing a skylight that creates a window to nature in the therapy suites, you are bathed in diffuse natural light while expert therapists gently but firmly massage, hydrate, and reverse any neglect of your body. It is the ‘rendezvous’ that Lindstrom urges we take, not simply for pampering the body, but that gives us the mind-space we need to survive our fast-paced lives. Think too of this luxury lodge as the base for a wonderful exploration of the area. It lies within a few kilometres of three of South Africa’s top 10 restaurants, two of South Africa’s oldest wineries and, should all this rejuvenation translate to a burst of energy, Erinvale Golf Course and De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate offers a day on pristine greens. What is also special about Silver Forest Boutique Lodge and Spa is its attention to fine detail: a butler service to ensure your every need is a gesture away; that your nights in fine cotton promise a restful sleep and healthy, tasty menus. And if you care deeply for the land and its most precious resources, this hotel draws on borehole water for the spa and drinking water, water of such high quality that there are plans to bottle it for consumption. Reverse time and reward yourself with days well spent here. Explore, return, indulge and play your life forwards.

LOCAL WINTER READER OFFER: Until the end of September 2017, enjoy a three night stay in a garden suite, incorporating a full day spa with two treatments each and entrance to the thermal suite, Champagne breakfast, high tea and inclusive of house wines and spirits for R2 750 per couple per night (normal price R5900 per night). Tsogo Sun – More Than A Hotel As construction gives way to décor, design and fine detail, Tsogo Sun’s new Cape Town development means you’ll be spoilt for choice

W

ith construction due to be completed next month, Tsogo Sun’s dual-brand 19 storey hotel development perfectly positioned on the corner of Bree, Buitengracht and Strand streets in Cape Town, has something for everyone. The development, which consists of the SunSquare Cape Town City Bowl and the StayEasy Cape Town City Bowl – is aimed at expanding Tsogo Sun’s offering to provide for both business and leisure travellers of all budgets. Constructed at a cost of R700 million, the two hotels will add 504 rooms to the Cape Town tourism market. The brand already has over 2000 beds in Cape Town, so this new development is testament to their supreme confidence in Cape Town. “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to increase our presence in one of the most vibrant cities on the continent. We believe the continued development and rejuvenation of Cape Town’s city centre will cater to growing demand for hotel accommodation,” says Marcel von Aulock, Tsogo Sun’s CEO. “Positioning these two strong Tsogo Sun brands in the Cape Town CBD expands the Group’s mid-market offering in one of the fastest growing segments of the hotel industry. These properties, designed with style and functionality, represent the next generation of room design in this category for Tsogo and offer superb accommodation, great location and affordable pricing.” The development consists of a 202-bedroom SunSquare Cape Town City Bowl hotel with five conference venues, the largest of which caters for up to 140 delegates; Tsogo Sun’s trendy and fast growing Vigour & Verve casual dining offering; a rooftop pool and bar with panoramic views; retail space; a fitness centre; and a StayEasy Cape Town City Bowl hotel, offering 302 bedrooms with a dedicated breakfast restaurant and access to all the facilities on the complex. The project also includes ample undercover parking for 300 vehicles. Whether visitors are keen to explore the vibrant restaurant district, Table Mountain Cable Way, V&A Waterfront, or enjoy the proximity to the Cape Town Stadium or the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Tsogo Sun’s new development couldn’t have a finer location. Comfort and convenience, all wrapped up in one brand-new package. Roll on August.

A Privately Guided Exploration in Namibia Exclusive safaris in some of the most remote areas of Namibia is what Gerhard Thirion, GM of Privately Guided Explorations Namibia, feels sets Wilderness Safaris apart. He enthusiastically shares the details of one of his most recent journeys, highlighting that the flexibility of a camping safari affords adventurous travellers an opportunity to get very close to nature. Rare sightings and amazing landscape are the order of each day

M

y amazing camp assistant, Ronald Hihangoro, and I prepare Kangombe before each trip. Kangombe, meaning “old beast” in Otjiherero and named after an old rhino bull, is our specially converted Land Rover. A day before the journey begins we depart Windhoek in the early hours and arrive at Möwe Bay by late afternoon. This allows us time to prepare the camp for our guests’ arrival the next day. When our guests alight off the Cessna Grand Caravan, they are treated to a barbecue lunch on the beach, with the Atlantic Ocean right at our feet. A post-lunch stroll along the beach to look at the various rocks and marine life is always a treat. Not far off is a Cape fur seal colony where hundreds of these curious mammals catch the sun on rocks and dart into the ocean for a swim or to find fish. We spend some time just enjoying the colony before heading off to the Desert Lion Conservation Project, where Dr Phillip Stander chats to us about his inspiring work in the Kunene region. After a sumptuous dinner, he even invites us to join him in checking a camera trap. It is set up to catch passers-by – specifically the elusive brown hyaena. Sadly for us, there was nothing captured on the camera but the excitement of the experience all but made up for it The next morning however, while enjoying our first cup of coffee, we catch sight of a brown hyaena in the distance which appears to be moving in the direction of the seal colony. We immediately jump into the vehicle and drive a short distance. To our sheer amazement, three brown hyaena, a reclusive carnivore species, are directly adjacent to the road. They casually glance over at us and then start towards the beach. We park the vehicle on an elevated point so that we can just observe them. It is a privilege to spend almost two hours watching the interaction between the hyaenas; a highlight when one appears out of the fog carrying a seal cub, and being followed by an opportunistic black-backed jackal. After taking tons of photographs, our own hunger sets in and we return to camp for breakfast.

TRAVEL

We head off in the direction of Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp. En route we stop off at the Möwe Bay Museum and visit a few ship remains, arriving at camp in the late afternoon. Our first welcome to Hoanib is a solitary elephant bull taking a leisurely stroll down to the dry riverbed. After a restful night’s sleep we travel up the Hoanib River and reach the Mudorib River in time for lunch in a small canyon where there is a freshwater spring, where we find tracks of various animals that had come to drink. After dinner we spent some quality time around the camp fire, chatting and appreciating life and the night sky. Our camping spot for the night is in a dry riverbed. On the last morning of our desert adventure we head south and notice fresh rhino tracks. After a bit of searching we eventually see it browsing in a riverbed near a hill. There is a strong easterly wind blowing that muffles the sound of our vehicle so we decide to have a closer look, setting off on foot as it is safe and the conditions are in our favour. When approaching any animal, and specifically a rhino in this harsh environment, we never want to cause any sort of disturbance and undue stress on the animal. This can result in the rhino wasting energy by trying to move away – something that can have a very detrimental effect on the

animal, especially when young calves are present. We position ourselves as a tight group on the riverbank behind a dense euphorbia bush and treat ourselves to another superb sighting and taking loads of pictures – again. Eventually we tear ourselves away, continuing our journey to arrive at Desert Rhino Camp in the afternoon. Dinner here is a traditional boma dinner under the bejewelled Namibian sky. This is the last night of our journey and only just a taste of some of the amazing encounters whilst exploring this remote, scenic corner of Namibia.

Privately Guided Journeys are exclusive safaris operating in Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. It caters to a small and exclusive number of guests, not exceeding eight. A private Explorations guide leads the safari sharing their passion and experience with guests. Accommodation ranges from permanent lodges to tented camps. Abduct the dog

Half brick tossing diplomacy

Not all wines are made the same. With the Michelangelo award winning wines you don’t have to worry — the quality is guaranteed. Having recently celebrated its 20th year with a record number of 1892 entries, it is South Africa’s largest wine competition, and the only one that is considered truly international. This, together with the use of the international 100–point scoring system, and the fact that only one third of the entries are awarded medals by a panel of world renowned, international wine judges, makes the Michelangelo not only extremely competitive, but also results in importers and distributors asking for — and often insisting on — Michelangelo award medals on the bottles.

In short, if it has a Michelangelo Award - you’re in good company. AUGUST 2017 | FLAMINGO

MARKETING

The rainmaker Marketing Academy The rainmaker Tourism and Hospitality keeps you up to date with the most recent developments in Digital Presence, Optimization, Reputation and Distribution Management. Every month we publish a dedicated marketing tip or highlight certain travel and consumer trends for the Tourism and Hospitality. rainmaker is the brainchild of some of the most experienced hospitality, tourism and digital marketing veterans in the industry. We bring 50 years of experience in the hotel, tourism, sales and marketing fields, as well as more than 15 years’ digital marketing experience to your project. This is enhanced by over 7 years of in-depth research and involvement in the Southern African hospitality and tourism industry, giving us peerless insight into the various source markets, market segments, value chains and market dynamics.

Tip #4 | What is Google Hotel and why it is Important for Lodges, Guesthouses and Hotels? “Thomas Müller CEO @ rainmaker digital Google Agency and Digital Marketing Agency for the Hospitality and Tourism Industry with 35+ years of experience in IT and 15+ years of experience in digital marketing in the hospitality and tourism industry, as well as 8 years of experience in the Southern African tourism industry, Thomas has an in depth understanding of the relevant source markets, value chains and the market dynamics in Southern Africa. Thomas used to work in Digital Marketing and in on site Resort management at the 5-star TUI and Thomas Cook properties. As General Manager Marketing & IT he was part of the turnaround team of O&L Leisure Hotels & Lodges in Namibia. From the marketing perspective, he was part of the design, development and opening team of O&L’s Strand Hotel Swakopmund.”

Most leisure lodges, B&Bs and guest-houses in Southern Africa get between 70% and 90% of their bookings through DMCs, who in turn get them from their international agents. Lodgings pay between 20% and 40% of their rates to DMCs. Further fees for so-called “fam or educational trips” or “brochure contribution” can also apply. This means that more than half of your revenue or almost 80% of your profit is handed over to someone else. And often does not contribute to the destination as the money leaves the country. This not only presents a great risk due to one-sided dependency, but also means your business needs to operate on very small margins. The staggering statistic is that from the 2100 registered lodgings in Namibia, only some 180 are listed and receiving bookings from Online Travel Agents (OTA) like booking.com and Expedia and the many others. These are bookings from guests that usually cannot be reached through the traditional route of DMCs, Wholesale and their Retail Travel Offices. The more additional bookings we can get via OTAs, the more tourists we can bring into the country. Also, you only give away 15-20% of your revenue to an OTA. Profit per booking, compared to a DMC booking which is about 23% higher. Since the 1st of July 2017, rainmaker has made Google Hotel available in Southern Africa. With Google Hotel, lodgings receive direct bookings at rack-rate in their own reservation system. Unlike with DMCs and OTAs, all relevant guest data is

92

AUGUST 2017 | FLAMINGO

MARKETING

transparently conveyed to the lodgings 1:1 and therefore the lodgings own the customer, where otherwise the DMC/WHolesale or the OTA owns the customer and uses all the available data for their marketing. Bookings can be made directly through the Google search page or another Google service such as Maps and in the future probably even in Google Destination. Profit per booking is about 23% higher than with DMC bookings as well. rainmaker, as a certified Google agency can directly link up lodges, hotels, guest-houses and guest-farms to Google Hotel. There is not only one successful marketing channel for your lodging. There are five. Each one has its purpose, as it addresses special goal markets and market segments. Successful lodgings manage their optimal sales and marketing-mix between DMCs, local tour operators and DMCs, OTAs, Google Hotel and direct bookings through their own website. The rainmaker team supported by the unique holistic 5 Stages of Success methodology supports lodgings by optimally designing their sales and marketing-mix and the entire digital presence in terms of visibility, booking conversion, reputation and therefore achieves a 20 to 30% improvement in occupancy, 30% to 50% in revenue and between 50% and 120% increase in profit.

BUSINESS

What the business world can learn from female entrepreneurs It is widely agreed that women’s style of doing business tends to differ from that of men, even though the distinctions are never clear-cut. But there is enough of a difference to suggest that the rise of female entrepreneurs is slowly changing the culture of the business world. Is it a change for the better, and can all business owners, male and female, embrace this change and benefit from it? Yes to all of the above, says Gerschwyne Van Wyk, country manager for Business Partners International in Namibia. He points to several positive traits that are discernible among female entrepreneurs, but which are by no means exclusive to them: •

Multi-tasking is one of the most celebrated abilities ascribed to women. It comes in particularly handy in the early stages of business, when the entrepreneur has to wear several hats, from production manager, sales manager, chief strategist to administrator. Focus is good, but if you can multi-task effectively, you stand a better chance of surviving your start-up days. Intuition is the indefinable, immeasurable sense that helps with decision making when cold facts are simply not enough. Everyone has it. Women are said to listen more carefully to theirs. Van Wyk says although technical analysis and figures are a crucial part of business decisions; they can lead entrepreneurs astray when they don’t pay attention to their intuition. Prudence is a characteristic not normally associated with entrepreneurship. Rather, entrepreneurship is often wrongly seen as game in which risk-taking is everything. In fact, careful calculation, assessment and appraisal is just as much part of business success as the willingness to take risks. Women tend to be more careful in business than men, says Van Wyk, to the extent that they are sometimes overly cautious. But there is no doubt that the success of female entrepreneurs has highlighted the importance of getting the balance right between overt risk-taking and caution.

Patience is linked to the trait of prudence and is extremely helpful to entrepreneurs who often have to get the timing of their ventures and plans just right in order to succeed. And then there are the difficult stretches in any business owner’s life where only patience and tenacity can stop them from throwing in the towel. The signs are there that the kind of patience traditionally attributed to women is helping them in the business world. The ability to give careful attention to detail is also linked to a more cautious style of doing business. High-flying, fast-paced wheeling and dealing often ends in tears because some minor clause in a contract had been overlooked, or because a tiny flaw somewhere had spun out of control. The female approach to building business generally seems slower, with smaller steps, but also with fewer mistakes. Few would argue against the phenomenon that women are generally tidier and more orderly than men, and make excellent administrators. Many businesses suffer from a lack of good filing systems, order in the workshop and well-kept schedules; some even fail to timeously submit their tax returns. It should come as no surprise that business women generally excel in this aspect of business. Higher levels of empathy associated with women can have a profound effect on the way a business owner connects with people, and female entrepreneurs are putting it to good use by building stronger relations with their workers, clients, suppliers, partners and associates. Anyone doubting that women are better at asking for advice need only think of the classic scenario of a couple lost on some driving trip, with the wife suggesting that they stop and ask for directions and the husband stubbornly continuing in the hope that he might stumble upon the right place. There are so many aspects to running a business that no one person can possibly know it all. Business owners often have to stop to ask for advice from mentors, consultants, suppliers, financiers, clients as well as other business owners. The fact that women are quicker to do so saves a lot of time and energy. The emergence of female entrepreneurs has clearly shown that success is not dependent on a traditional male style of doing business, says Van Wyk. The evidence shows that businesses started and run by women survive just as well as male-run businesses.

But what about the super-league of entrepreneurship? Does the lack of female entrepreneurs among the empire builders such as Richard Branson or Mark Zuckerberg suggest only a male style of business will get you there? It is early days yet for women in the business world, but Van Wyk believes that emerging female role models such as Oprah Winfrey show that women can compete even on that level without losing their femininity.

Helena’s serves global classics and heritage food with a twist, like bobotie with sambals, a popular dish of Malay origin.

A concise lunch menu features classic dishes from around the world prepared with premium quality, locally sourced produce. A firm favourite is the traditional bobotie of Malay origin – a curried, ground beef bake, served with savoury rice, peach chutney and a fresh tomato and onion sambal. For dinner, Helena’s offers a carefully curated selection of South African heritage food, often with a modern twist and always accompanied by delightfully unique South African sides, like baked cucumber flan and slaphakskeentjies – literally translated “little loose heels” – a quintessentially South African offering of pickled onions in a sweet and sour mustard glaze. A dish of humble origin, it pairs beautifully with game, slow roasted Certified Karoo Lamb or the restaurant’s signature melt-in-themouth Chalmar steak. Guests can retire poolside, enjoy a deeply relaxing spa treatment on site, or sink into the layered luxury of a beautifully appointed room. All 16 guest rooms are air-conditioned to provide relief from the African sun, and feature underfloor heating in Victorian en suite bathrooms to cushion guests from the Cape winters. All rooms feature extra-length king size or twin single beds. Rated for its bountiful freshness, the breakfast buffet at Helena’s is a drawcard for returning guests.

“Our guests feel so at home here. They value the more than 200 years of history, the fantastically central location and the personal care taken by the team at Coopmanhuijs. And, of course, the buffet breakfasts at Helena’s. They definitely come back for those.” - Wesley Swartz, Acting GM

Go Wild It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to ‘Go Wild’ with a brand new 4x4 Duster, a detailed itinerary, a GPS and accommodation at some of the greatest lodges north of Windhoek

T

he words ‘Go Wild’ held an alluring quality that I couldn’t resist. They made my whole body tingle with excitement and the promise of adventure. It was as if I had finally been given permission to let go of commitments, leave behind my responsibilities (in good hands, of course) and wave goodbye to city trappings. The wilderness was calling. And, it was calling me. I collected the keys and stepped into the vehicle. The freedom of the open road lay ahead. This was a wildlife-lover’s dream and a package deal I couldn’t resist: a ten-day safari into the wilds of Etosha National Park and the Zambezi Region with some overnighting on the banks of the Okavango River thrown in for good measure - and everything in between from the vehicle to the reservations, prebooked and carefully arranged. Before long I was on the road. Etosha, the wild heart of the country, beckoned. When I had finally put aside those last few city-concerns, I found myself quickly tuning in to the Namibian countryside, which sported a long blonde grassy hairdo after the summer rains. I didn’t look back. Instead, I found myself being warmly welcomed at Etosha Safari Camp and plunging into the rhythm of Africa with the lively beat of the Etosha Boys in the courtyard of the Shebeen restaurant, surrounded by a colourful and quirky collection of bric-a-brac. That night, the roar of lions merged with my dreams and the echoing lyrics ‘In the jungle, the

mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight’ from the band’s repertoire. What were the lions up to? ‘A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh.’ I had two leisurely days to find out and explore the waterholes of Etosha National Park that glittered like jewels on an African queen’s necklace. Etosha never disappoints and happy hours were spent watching animal antics, transporting me into a world when the Earth was still young. They formed a collage of striking images: springboks pronking high into the air with exuberance, adrenaline and amplified life-energy; zebra-crossings blocking the road in a puzzle of pied striping; graceful impala in racecourse-fine condition; journeys of giraffe traversing the plains; massive elephant bulls showering in Etosha’s fine white dust; and the resolute feline stare of a lioness, sizing me up. The wild side of the Zambezi Region drew me northwards after the satisfying Etosha feast. But, first the peace of Hakusembe River Lodge on the Okavango River lulled me into a peaceful reverie with its tree-filled garden and rich bird life. An afternoon boat cruise was the perfect way to celebrate the sunset with an effervescent glass of good champagne. Frogs croaked and chimed me to sleep and I awoke to the uplifting music of bird song, a flask of hot coffee delivered to my door and a blanket of early morning mist over the river. Life was indeed good. Into the wild. The wildlife-lover’s dream continued . . . African villages with their wattle and daub huts led eastwards through Bwabwata National Park where elephant caution signs pepper the roadside. Home to an abundance of elephant and buffalo, Bwabwata – as well as Mudumu and Nkasa Rupara national parks

further east – are top-notch wildlife destinations. Bwabwata’s multi-use area is, surprisingly, shared by both people and wildlife, revealing some intelligent lateral thinking by the Namibian government after independence. “Ha, ha, ha!” The laughing-sound of hippos echoed from the reeds and waterlilies at Namushasha River Lodge on the Kwando River, my grand thatch-roofed home for the next three days. Highlights of a stay are the boat cruises on the river and guided trips into Bwabwata National Park, via boat on the Kwando, later transferring to a safari vehicle to explore the national park on land. The excitement began on the river when we had to navigate past a pod of hippo – a nerve-wracking experience when you know that these hefty 1500kg animals have been known to charge boats when threatened. The encounter provided the chance for the guide to relate the African fable of how hippos adopted their watery home many aeons ago. “They gathered together and emailed God,” he explained, adding his own quaint 21st-century interpretation to the old legend, “promising God that they wouldn’t eat the fish in the river.” They made an agreement that they would always display their teeth and scatter their dung to show that they were not harbouring any fish bones.

If good can get better, it did. A good sighting of an elephant family greeted us at Horseshoe, Bwabwata’s ox-bow lake, a popular drinking spot for elephants. And the pungent smell of buffalo alerted us to a herd for our final sighting of the day as we raced the sun homewards. Dining outdoors by candlelight to the sound of the wild waterworld added spice – and magic - to the overwhelming journey – or ‘safari’ as it is called in Swahili, as did a drive through Mudumu National Park the following day, a visit to the Namushasha Heritage Centre under the boughs of an old baobab tree and a basket-buying spree at Mashi Crafts. It was time to retrace my steps to the Okavango River for another serving of river peace – and a visit to the Mbunza Living Museum to be introduced to the traditional life of the Kavango people. It culminated in drumbeat, song and dance, and the ancient spirit of a river people remembering their cultural roots. Frogs croaked, cows mooed, swamp boubous called and people rowed their dugout canoes on the river. If I could personify Mama Africa, I think she would have turned to me there and then, looked deeply into my eyes as the red sun slunk into the water and smiled a gorgeous wide smile with pearl-white teeth. And, she would have winked - mischievously. I was smitten.

SWASH Personal Clothing Care System

OOINO Mini Refrigerator

We have featured SWASH sometime ago; this time, this futuristic clothing care system is available for you to buy. Kiss goodbye to your dry clean bills, no more excessive washing, drying, and ironing. SWASH is the world’s first in-home clothing care system; it refreshes, preserves, and removes wrinkles. This system set comes complete, it has everything you need to get started: an adjustable hanger, a pocket smoother, a 12-count multipack of SWASH PODS cups, and a quick start guide. Even though this system doesn’t remove stains from clothes, it offers the benefits of de-wrinkling and refreshing your clothes in less than 15 minutes. The sleek body design fits almost anywhere, you can place it in your bedroom or closet, the installation is also very easy, simply plug it into a standard wall outlet and turn it on. No need for plumbing, water, pipes, or special hook-ups.

Compared to an Icebox, OOINO Mini Refrigerator would certainly offer better advantage. It’s a conceptual portable fridge to carry your food and beverages for any activity. Featuring two in one functions, you can use OOINO as a mini fridge at home but you can also transform it into an icebox on-the-go. It’s a futuristic home appliance with modern design that enhances any existing décor; the idea here was to create a new product design that offers pleasant elements in the warm form of Nordic furniture. The top door features wood material that adds a warm touch in a simple object, including those cute legs. The fridge is available in different colour options to suit users’ taste or the interior design, from pink, red, white, brown, and blue. Designer: Jae Young Kim

Compact Ziv’s Portable Smoker

Solarpuff : Sustainable Home Lighting

A smoker as compact as a briefcase, Ziv’s Portable Smoker is easy to carry and easy to use since it works with any heat source. The creator of this device grew up on a farm, that’s why they have always appreciated nature, catching fish and cooking them on fire is more than familiar. There’s a problem though, when you have to go away for camping or a long fishing trip; it’s hard to cook the fish on a grill, either they will fall apart or cook unevenly. Keeping this in mind, he decided to solve this problem with a collapsible smoker that can be easily transported everywhere. During the design process, the team went through various designs and materials; they also ate countless amounts of meat and trout to find the best possible taste. This smoker works with meat and fish, it also works with vegetables, tofu, or hard cheeses, so vegans and vegetarians can enjoy the unit too.

Solight Design has created Solarpuff, a beautiful solarpowered inflatable cube. It is beautifully architected sustainable home lighting for environmentally friendly conscious consumers. Alice Min Soo Chun, the inventor of Solarpuff, wanted to solve an important issue; there are more than a billion people around the world that still don’t have good access to reliable and proper lighting. Combining her knowledge, and her love for origami, this inflatable lamp was born. Solarpuff works in three simple steps: press the button once for a low light setting, twice for a high setting, and three times for blinking. You can carry this product just about anywhere as long as there’s sun, since it needs to get sunlight for about 8 hours to be fully charged, then you can enjoy 8 to 12 hours of light. reative excellence has long been a calling card for the Mother City and never has that been more palpable than with the imminent opening of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. Excitement is building and the creative energy is at an all-time high in the city as the final touches are made ahead of the museum’s grand opening in September. The first major museum on the continent dedicated to contemporary art, Zeitz Mocca is the embodiment of artistry, with the building itself a work of art. Located in the V&A Waterfront’s historic Grain Silo, the gallery will span nine floors and will include German-born businessman, Jochen Zeitz’s renowned private collection of African artworks and installations, as well as cuttingedge contemporary art from around the continent. Once completed, Zeitz Mocca will be home to Centres for Costume Institute, Photography, Curatorial Excellence, the Moving Image, Performative Practice, and Art Education, and will feature a myriad of gallery spaces, a sculpture garden, bookshop, restaurant, technical training areas, research labs and reading rooms. The museum’s ‘Access for All’ policy, will ensure those unable to afford admission will never be turned away, while visitors under 18 will be afforded free entry all year round, meaning the next generation of artists will be able to feed their creative spirit freely. Zeitz Mocca is the latest edition to the city’s burgeoning art scene and will no doubt stand like a beacon for creatives and art lovers alike, but it is just one experience among a multitude of offerings in a city overflowing with artistic excellence with locals leading the way. The new Airbnb experiences are also featuring a number of artistic experiences for visitors to take part in. A relatively new offering from Airbnb, the experiences allow those travelling to the city to immerse themselves in activities with locals showing them the ropes. There are a number of options available for those looking at learning about artistry in Cape Town, with everything from sketching classes to electro dancing on the table. The Mother City has long been a muse for artists, with a natural beauty second to none, but dig a few inches beneath the surface, you will find a city alive with creativity, artistic vibrancy and an exhilarating spirit.

INVESTMENT

Positive Sentiment, Strong Economy To Benefit The ‘Reasonably Cheap’ Chinese Market

A

fter three slower years, China looks to be back on trend where growth is concerned - but low interest rates have seen Chinese property prices escalate, leading to the formation of a real estate bubble that could spoil the party. For now, however, sentiment in Chinese markets remains positive while valuations are cheap relative to historical levels, as well as peers. As a result, the Prescient China Balanced Fund is currently 90% invested in equities. Reporting on the fund’s performance, Meyer Coetzee, Head of Retail at Prescient Investment Management, commented: “The Fund had a fantastic first quarter, rising 5.6% after fees, beating the benchmark and outperforming its peers. “Despite being a balanced fund, the Fund also outperformed the equity index. We will remain overweight as we believe the market is currently reasonably cheap, with good sentiment and strong economic activity. “Since inception on 30 April 2013, both asset allocation and security selection have contributed to performance. The merit of active management is evident in a market like China.” The first quarter of 2017 started with a bang for China and the rest of the world. Global equity markets rallied to new highs, while economic numbers out of China and the US were robust. Emerging Markets recovered strongly from a low base, especially in Hong Kong, where shares were sold down on the back of weak Chinese growth. The Chinese economy recovered through 2016 with Prescient’s economic models showing the country back at trend growth after three years of slower growth. Monetary policy remains easy although central banks started tightening on the back of the economic recovery. This was evident when the People’s Bank of China hiked rates twice in the first quarter. Inflation has also moved back to trend. “When analysing economic data, one can see that the economy is finally recovering after a period of hardship. The combination of a recovering economy and excess capacity reduction resulted in the end of deflation in Chinese manufacturing. It appears China is roaring back to life,” said Coetzee. Of concern, however, is that low interest rates and a lack of investment alternatives have seen Chinese property prices escalate, leading to the formation of a property bubble. Unlike

Meyer Coetzee Director at EMHPrescient Investment Management

equities, property easily makes up 60% to 70% of a typical household’s wealth. Consequently, should this bubble burst, the resulting debt and savings crisis could sink the economy once again. Property prices in tier one Chinese cities have been growing at 30% to 40% a year and steps have been taken to limit the severity of the bubble. Leverage is being limited while large cash deposits are required on home loans. The Chinese government is responding to the supply shortage with long-term plans to build new cities. The newly announced Xiongan, based on the model of Pudong and Shenzhen economic zones is testimony of this and will involve the creation of a business district 80kms from Beijing. Initially it will be 100 square kilometres in size, eventually expanding to an economic area covering 2000 square kilometres. Unsurprisingly, as the government announced these plans, speculators bought up the land in these areas leading to property prices rising quickly. This forced the government to stop speculative activity of this nature, showing once again how good intentions in Chinese markets can have unintended consequences. Coetzee said Prescient’s investment models continue to work extremely well and in line with expectations. “The first quarter of 2017 marks one of those quarters when both asset allocation and security selection worked well. Over the long-term, the Prescient China Balanced Fund has delivered strong real returns and has performed in the top 1% of its sector since inception.”

THE TRAVEL UPDATE July 2017 VOL. 1, NO. 13



We are a proudly Namibian hospitality and service company. We manage resorts and camps within our National Parks across our beautiful country on behalf of the Namibian Government. We have professional, knowledgeable and customer-driven staff who are dedicated to providing you with a relaxing, comfortable, memorable and a liberating Namibian experience. We look forward to hosting you on your next visit.

ONKOSHI RESORT Starting from as little as N$ 825 Key activities: Stargazing, Photography and Game Drives

ONE ON ONE WITH OUR MANAGING DIRECTOR (EXTRACT FROM EXECUTIVE NAMIBIA 2017) 1. How has the NWR fared, since its inception, in the attainment of this mandate? (If possible, please outline the achievements and challenges the institution has faced in this period). One needs to reflect back to the establishment of NWR in order to gain an insight into the challenges and achievements of the company. During pre-independence, the current camps/resorts where located in protected areas and were run by the administration of the day through the Department of Nature Conservation. Then post-independence, the resorts fell under the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and were run by the Directorate of Tourism. These resorts were nowhere near the standard required by the tourism market at all. Namibia Wildlife Resorts was then created by an Act of Parliament in 1998 (Act 3 of 1998) and became operational soon thereafter with little capitalization and no investments in the newly commercialised resorts. Inevitably, NWR systematically accumulated losses and the product and service offering deteriorated to an extent that some camps/resorts no longer qualified for registration by the Namibia Tourism Board. During 2006 – 2009, a three-year Turnaround Strategy was formulated which aimed at improving the products of the company. The following camps were redeveloped (Okaukuejo, Namutoni and Halali) and renovated in time for the Etosha Centenary celebrations in 2007. Sesriem campsite and an entirely new Sossus Dune Lodge was also built while /Ai-/Ais and Waterberg were redeveloped. Then in 2010, the Shareholder committed investment financing for six more NWR facilities,

over a three-year budgeting cycle: Torra Bay, Hobas, Popa Falls, Naukluft, Hardap and Gross Barmen. These were successfully completed and these resorts are now fully operational. To some extent, we can say the hardware is now in place and the challenges that NWR is facing are software-related such as excellent customer service, effective maintenance of resorts, operational efficiency and sound corporate governance. It is in dealing with these challenges that the company is recording progress and achievements. A new Board of Directors recently took office and immediately set off on the path of ensuring sound corporate governance. It finalised the appointment of a substantive Managing Director and the filling of key vacancies such as that of the Chief Operations Officer and Company Secretary. It further instituted a company-wide performance management system which is tied towards a clear Strategic Business Plan setting sustainable profitability as the key strategic goal of the company. Already these efforts are bearing fruits and the company has won a few national and global awards culminating with me being named the IPM CEO of the year in 2016. 2. Would you say that NWR has done enough to promote tourism to the locals in the same vein as the international visitors? And if not, what I would say we certainly have done a lot. When one looks at the efforts that we as a company do, such as taking part in local Tourism related activities such as the Namibia Tourism Expo, Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair, Windhoek Show and Okakarara Trade Fair we do our part to sensitise the public on our establishments. Though I would be the first to admit that due to not

Mrs. Zelna Hengari - Namibia Wildlife Resorts Managing Director

being well resourced we are not in a position to always do what we would love to do. On the local front, we also introduced a discounted card called NamLeisure. A few years ago, we introduced two new cards in addition to the original NamLeisure card. The two cards are NamLeisure Plus, which is doing very well amongst our couples. The family segment is slowly picking up as customers who are planning their holidays are seeing the need to have a NamLeisure Family in order to enjoy huge savings on their accommodation. 3. What partnerships does the NWR have with external stakeholders (foreign) to attain its mandate? In terms of partnerships, we tend to utilise a local company within a key market to help us further our product awareness. For instance, in China and America, we previously worked with companies that were directly marketing NWR on our behalf. Through such initiatives, we saw an increase of tourists from these markets.

Here are some highlights of our time at the Namibia Tourism Expo which took place from 31 May to 3 June 2017.

ACHIEVE peace of mind during your retirement with a simple and flexible living annuity from Liberty

“We want to be there for our customers throughout their life journey. In being part of this journey, we also want to offer the best solutions combined with tailored services that meet our customers’ expectations” Liberty prides itself in its capabilities as a financial services provider to safeguard its customers’ monies and assist in growing this over a period of time. As part of this core promise, Liberty is launching the Flexible Annuity; a Living Annuity that allows customers to choose the funds they want their retirement monies to be invested in – with an option to change as circumstances change. “We have named this living annuity “flexible” because we truly believe that it offers one of the most flexible options in the market”, says Christell Loots, Liberty Life Namibia MD. She says “the Flexible Annuity is a simple but sophisticated product; it offers retirees the chance to invest their retirement funds in top performing funds in Namibia; earn investment income during the time of the annuity and also select the regular income they want to receive”. All of this comes with the flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances. “We are excited about the versatility of this offering into the Namibian market – and we believe that such a product will go a long way in assisting retirees structure their retirement period properly” says Ms Loots. With over 60 years of looking after people’s financial futures, Liberty is well placed in providing complete retirement solutions in Namibia. Liberty’s track record over the years as one of the best insurers in the market is proof that the brand has been entrusted with customer’s financial well-being. The company prides itself in delivering on its promises. With the new Flexible Living Annuity – the company is well on its way to providing a comprehensive offering which meets a large part of any customer’s needs through their life stages, spanning from infancy, right up to post-retirement. “We want to be there for our customers throughout their life journey. In being part of this journey, we also want to offer the best solutions combined with tailored services that meet our customers’ expectations” reiterates Loots. Solutions that meet Customer Needs Liberty’s main philosophy is based on creating products which are relevant in the market and forming strong partnerships with customers. This is enabled through Liberty’s understanding of

customer needs. As a responsible corporate citizen, the company sees its responsibility centred around empowering clients by offering the best suitable solutions. In times of unfortunate events, the last thing customers should worry about is finances. The Flexible Living Annuity comes standard with N$10 000 immediate expense cover, which is payable upon a valid claim of the policyholder. The Advantage of Knowing: Receiving Sound Financial Advice The investment value held in a Living Annuity can be made up of different types of portfolios. These portfolios have different levels of risk and return associated with them. Customers should consider the overall composition of their product in terms of these portfolios. Liberty believes in sound financial advice, customers are therefore, urged to engage with registered and accredited financial advisers in order to structure their investment portfolios appropriately, to ensure that their needs are met as far as possible. The Flexible Annuity allows one to choose from conservative investment portfolios to more aggressive portfolios in the market. While saving for retirement, your investment’s exposure to different asset classes is normally regulated. After retirement, when you are usually dependent on receiving a regular and stable income, a more conservative approach to portfolio selection may be desirable. Customers are therefore encouraged to review their living annuity investment strategy on a regular basis in consultation with their appointed intermediary, to ensure that it meets their needs. An investor needs to ensure that the income selected is at a sustainable level and that the investment does not outrun the retiree. Finally, a living annuity will pay out the outstanding investment value to the nominated beneficiary, ensuring that you leave a legacy to your loved ones. For more information, speak to your intermediary or call us on +264 61 294 2343 to find out more about the Flexible Living Annuity OR email us on FlexibleLiving@Liberty.com.na
