Taking strides towards prosperity for all Namibia to host international Invest in Namibia Conference

His Excellency Dr. Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia

O

n 21 March 2015, President Dr. Hage Geingob was inaugurated into Office as the third democratically elected President of the Republic of Namibia. Continuing the legacy of his two predecessors, President Geingob’s administration has brought renewed focus and emphasis on the Government policy priority to redress persisting socio economic imbalances and bring about inclusive growth and development for all. Under the overarching theme of “No Namibian Should Feel Left Out”, President Geingob declared all out war on poverty and concomitant inequalities, launching the Namibian trajectory towards prosperity for all. The Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP) is the strategic roadmap and Government’s targeted acceleration Plan to usher Namibia into the epoch of Prosperity, in clearly defined priority areas. The Plan is constructed around five pillars (critical success factors), namely: Effective Governance; Economic Advancement; Social Progression; Infrastructure

2|

Development; and International Relations and Cooperation. HPP commits Government to 15 goals and outcomes and 43 targets for implementation, during the Harambee period 2016/17 – 2019/20. In line with the national objective of attracting foreign direct investment, technologies and skills, essential drivers for inclusive economic growth and in tandem with the Harambee Prosperity Plan, the Government of the Republic of Namibia, through the Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development (MITSMED) will host the Invest in Namibia International Investment Conference 2016 from November, 8 – 9, in Windhoek, Namibia. Held under the theme “Promoting Investment for Inclusive Growth and Industrialization”, the Conference provides the ideal platform for Domestic and International Investors to explore unique opportunities in targeted sectors that have the potential to contribute towards economic growth and job creation.

The Conference will highlight Namibia’s strategic role as a logistics hub for trade within SADC and the rest of Africa and will showcase a menu of investment projects in key growth industries such as Energy, Agriculture, Low-Cost Housing, Tourism, Manufacturing and Infrastructure. In preparation for and preceding the November Conference, the Government recently hosted a series of high-level leadership seminars with globally renowned economists, Prof. Joseph Stiglitz and Dr. Carlos Lopes on the theme ‘Closing the Gap of Inequality’. The seminars underscored the imperative of inclusive growth for shared prosperity and sustainability. In an effort to further promote the Conference to the international community of investors, New York City will take center stage with a curtain raiser scheduled to take place on September 22nd, 2016 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, setting the tone for the highly anticipated Investment Conference.

With a winning combination of political and economic stability, strategic location as a growing trade and logistic hub, world-class infrastructure and preferential market access, Namibia is abound with opportunities. We welcome you to invest in one of the most promising emerging economies in Sub-Saharan Africa. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to be a part of our journey. Standard Bank ready to support the mining sector Standard Bank has a rich pedigree in the mining industry. As a Bank well-versed in serving the mining sector in Africa, Standard Bank has been framing its products to ensure that the country has more bankable projects that can take the country to new economic heights. The Bank has been ready to finance large-scale mining projects, understanding that the projects require big chunks of financing. One recent key highlight has been the co-financing of Debmarine Namibia’s latest sampling and exploration vessel (approximately N$1.8 billion). “Like many large investment banks, we work with the government, corporates and financial clients in multiple sectors and geographies. Unlike most, we are first and foremost Namibian; we have a long, proud history that gives us a unique depth of expertise and breadth of footprint. We are set apart by our scale, by the strength of our regional and international connections, and by our ability to innovate. Our track record shows our success in building businesses across Namibia, especially in natural resources, mining, power and infrastructure sectors, ” thus Standard Bank’s Head of Client Coverage in Corporate and Investment Banking Division, Adri Spangenberg.

tbwa.com.na

While this year may be a challenging one for the global mining industry, mining prospects remain Standard Bank’s strength and passion for Africa as a region. And so when clients speak with Standard Bank, they are actually having a conversation with an entire regional regional backbone. We are always ready to finance business ventures with an established business plan and viable outlook. Exploration projects, however, have a very unique business structure in that income streams tend to be highly speculative and dependent on what’s in the ground and the interested extraction counterparty. For this reason, most exploration projects are funded by owner equity or by sizeable minerals extraction firms. Mining is a risky business that is influenced by several factors, including uncertainties in commodity prices on the world markets. However in terms of the outlook, commodity prices are not anticipated to exhibit material improvement, impacting on sector valuations and the ability to raise financing. But Standard Bank Group research shows that African mining remains underexplored.

122 |

Adri Spangenberg, Head: Client Coverage, Standard Bank Corporate and Investment Banking

In 2013, African exploration accounted for 17% of the worldwide exploration budget despite the fact that the continent holds more than 30% of the world’s mineral resources. So amid a more sober outlook, the prospects for mining in Africa remain essentially intact over the medium term. And although cautious, our appetite for mining projects is quite strong. What financing products is Standard Bank offering to medium and large scale exploration and mining firms? We offer solutions in Advisory, Capital Markets, Debt and Transactional Services. All these capabilities bring together complementary skills from corporate finance and balance sheet banking to geology and mining engineering. And with our global footprint, our transactional banking network is able to provide our clients with a more seamless solution for their day-to-day operations.

Debmarine Namibia’s latest sampling and exploration vessel (approximately N$1.8 billion) financed by Standard Bank Namibia

How do you convince a local miner to access project financing from your Bank, other than foreign financial institutions, understanding that it is always cheaper to borrow from Banks in foreign countries where interest rates are relatively lower? This question symbolises our strength as a regional bank. We are able to finance miners on both local and foreign exchange expenditure needs within our integrated Group structure. How will Standard Bank contribute to the growth of the mining sector in Namibia? Because of our history as a mining bank and our enduring expertise in this sector, we work to understand our clients‘ individual requirements. We coordinate and execute our clients’ financing and banking requirements across Africa and emerging global markets. Our highly regarded commodity and currency trading desks offer 24-hour trading capabilities to support price-risk management and hedging strategies. In addition, we carry out in-depth analyses of commodity trends and stay on top of the latest developments in the mining and metals industry. We continue to play a leading role in arranging facilities for many of the most significant mining projects in Africa and other key emerging markets. Our comprehensive suite of financing and advisory solutions for the mining and metals sector includes: • Project finance • Corporate finance advisory solutions

• Working capital facilities • Bridging finance • Acquisition finance • Inventory financing • Structured trade and commodity finance • Commodity price risk management solutions • Foreign exchange and interest rate hedging • Global transactional banking services In the meantime, we continue to participate in dialogues that promote sustainable business and growth in the mining sector. Standard Bank Namibia is confident that the mining sector promises positive growth opportunities for the country, despite a downturn in the global mining industry. Mining prospects, however, look bright for Namibia as the country is currently the world’s fourth largest producer of uranium and is expected to overtake Niger and Australia by 2017 through the commencement of the Husab mine production. As Standard Bank, our eminence talks to financing power and infrastructure, mining and metals, oil and gas, and other key sectors such as fast-moving consumable goods, real estate and telecommunication. As the world looks to emerging markets to power growth, Namibia is taking its rightful place at the heart of this.

s we drive out of Windhoek into Katutura, it feels like entering another world. A world that is louder, more vibrant and colourful: kids play on the streets with empty plastic containers, men sit outside barbershops, women hang laundry in their yards, and people sell goods and vegetables on the road. A gravel road leads us to Penduka. Never would we have expected such beauty at the end of the dusty street: lush green grass grows at the shore of Gorengab Dam, buildings with colourful drawings on their walls and a peaceful atmosphere welcomes us. “Penduka means wake up”, explains Kauna Simon, managing director of Penduka, while showing us the craft and gift shop. We admire handmade dolls, jewellery, handbags, pillows and blankets, all made by the women of Penduka. “We want to empower women to earn their own money and to wake up to their future, to take responsibility for their lives”, the 36-year old tells us. She has worked in Penduka since 2007. “I think, the knowledge that the women gain, is most important. I want them to have a sense of the working world. They get training here and some of them want to open their own business.” The women who work in Penduka come from Katutura, and are single moms or disabled. Some have never had a job before. Now they do at Penduka, tells Simon, and guides us through the workshops. In the first building, women are busy cutting, painting and sewing fabric. Colourful blankets and pillows are created. Simon shows us a storage room where painted pottery is waiting to be shipped to Germany. Over 100 women work here, 33 of them in the workshops. The salary a woman earns is about N$ 1700. “We want to give women a chance, to see the world in a different way and to experience their own power. There are not many opportunities for disabled or deaf women in Namibia”, says Simon as we walk over to the jewellery workshop. Three deaf women work on beadwork behind a desk. Necklaces and bracelets in all colours of the rainbow are lying

12 |

on another table. A child is sleeping on a blanket in a corner. Olivia Kanime, a young deaf woman, explains how she makes glass pearls. Simon translates the sign language for us. Kanime shows us an empty green glass bottle. The glass will be melted, formed into pearls and burned into pottery in the oven. Kanime’s face lights up with pride as she shows us the finished pearls. We begin to understand what it means for the women to work here. They seem to be very happy and content. “Some of the women live here, others have their own places in Katutura,” Simon tells us as she shows us the house where the women live. There is also a garden where they grow vegetables, a

fish tank and chickens. On the shore of the dam are red-painted guest houses built in the traditional way with grass roofs. “This is where tourists can stay”, Simon says. She is always happy about visitors from all over the world: “We offer workshops in beading and batik work. Visitors can also take a tour, or they can volunteer or just relax at the terrace of the restaurant with a view of the water.” They also have a dance group which perform traditional dances. As we leave Penduka, we too feel like we have woken up, see things clearer and feel grateful for our work and lifestyle which we often take for granted. www.penduka.com

The Africa Geographic Photographer of the Year 2016 Drum roll…the 15 finalists of the Africa Geographic Photographer of the Year 2016 competition…and the winner!

A

fter reviewing almost 10,000 entries to the Africa Geographic Photographer of the Year 2016 competition – thanks to Canon and Cape Union Mart - and narrowing those down to just 15 finalists, the panel of judges chose the winners for each of the competition categories travel/scenic, traditional culture, and wildlife – and the final overall winner. It was no easy feat, and there has been a great deal of deliberation as to

16 |

which photographers pushed the limits and their camera settings to capture the spirit of Africa through the lens. The winner walked away with a Canon EOS 70D Body and 18-135 IS STM Kit, very handy for the next leg of their prize…five nights for two at Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort (including Airlink flights ex Johannesburg to Pemba). The two runners-up had the choice of two nights at Tintswalo Atlantic in Cape Town or at African Luxury

The Africa Geographic Photographer of the Year 2016 (and winner of the Traditional Culture Category): Robin Stuart for his incredible photo of a Maasai warrior teaching his son about the stars! The judges said: A tender moment shared between a father and son that captures the universal nature of humanity on the vast plains of one of Africa’s greatest wildernesses.

Robin offers some background on his photograph: “A few years ago I became very passionate about space and the stars, and it took me to the world of astrophotography, which I decided to delve into last year. The main inspiration behind the shot came from hearing that the Maasai were seminomadic and used the stars to navigate across the East African plains in search of new grazing grounds for their livestock. This struck a major chord with me. Having just started astrophotography, I wanted to capture this idea in an image, knowing that something similar had probably not been done before, as astrophotography is a relatively new photographic genre – especially here in Africa. “My family has been doing business in the Maasai Mara National Reserve for over 100 years and we have built a very strong relationship with the local community. We run a luxury camp in the Siana area just outside the reserve, which is close to where I took this photograph. Over the years we have supported a local primary school by installing a six-kilometre water pipeline, building classrooms and dormitories, and providing internet access and a computer lab. So when I approached the Maasai people, they were very welcoming and happily allowed me to spend the evening taking photographs of them. The shoot was mostly just something fun to do that night, and I felt privileged to meet the Maasai in their home and to capture their rich culture on camera. “I had not initially planned to capture the moment with a father and his son, but the idea came while we were waiting for the sun to set. The young boys were herding cattle back to their manyattas and I guess it just hit me. At a young age, a Maasai boy must learn how to become a man and a warrior, and insights and wisdom are passed down the generations. My goal was, therefore, to capture on camera the moment when a father passed down his knowledge of the stars to his son; using the Milky Way and the setting of their semi-permanent hut as compositional elements.”

Travel / Scenic Category Shining a light on the Milky Way in Spitzkoppe, Namibia ŠBen McRae. The judges said: An evocative, seemingly impromptu image that captures the grandiose scale of the Milky Way in its superb simplicity. The juxtaposition of light and dark creates the drama rather than relying on action.

Wildlife Category A lioness prepares to hunt in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania ŠRoie Galitz The judges said: Colour, texture and composition combine to create a striking photo of a feline in contemplative action.

18 |

Wildlife Category An elephant bull walks to the water in Amboseli National Park, Kenya ŠPieter Ras. The judges said: The low angle shot, bold lines and use of black and white make for an imposing image of this iconic African species that stands out on the dusty plains against a dramatic sky.

Wildlife Category A honey badger at Cubitje Quap waterhole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park ŠWillem Kruger The judges said: Endearing photo of a usually aggressive animal that captures a poignant, almost human moment of reflection in crystal clarity.

Traditional Culture Category Children create a makeshift house in Motsoaledi informal settlement, South Africa ©Ilan Ossendryver The judges said: The use of colour is captivating in this Pop Art-esque image, which so wonderfully represents the creativity of the joyful human spirit.

Wildlife Category A young baboon strikes a pose in Tarangire National Park, Tanzania ©Jacques-Andre Dupont The judges said: Reminiscent of Rodin’s The Thinker, this cute little fellow stole the judges’ hearts thanks to its focus and interesting posture.

Wildlife Category A black eagle takes a branch to its nest in Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens, South Africa ©Ernest Porter. The judges said: A Quidditch player in the making, it wasn’t just the hallowed stance of this black eagle that caught the judges’ attention, but also the balance of the composition and sharp focus throughout.

Wildlife Category An underwater dancer in Protea Banks, a top dive site off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa ©Pier Mane The judges said: Bold colours and clarity make for a magical image of Africa’s often overlooked marine diversity.

Wildlife Category A male lion in the twilight of his reign in Kruger National Park, South Africa ©Craig Hayman. The judges said: Dramatic composition reigns supreme in this evocative black and white image that captures one of Africa’s most regal predators in a natural, rugged state.

Wildlife Category A hyena gets caught in the rain ©Nick Rabjohn. The judges said: It was the element of mystery that enticed our panel to select this intriguing silhouette of a hyena that was taken in difficult atmospheric circumstances.

Wildlife Category Greener pastures for a white rhino in a private game reserve in South Africa ŠMark Winckler The judges said: An intimate moment is shared with one of the Big Five thanks to the use of shadow and contrasting colours.

Wildlife Category A rainy day for a lion in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania ŠPanos Laskarakis. The judges said: Standard rules of photography are defied with the centred eye contact of this muddied big cat, which draws you into its world and makes for a very powerful photo.

Wildlife Category A hornbill and a hare in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania ©William Walldén. The judges said: An incredibly sharp image of a hornbill displaying its resourcefulness by capturing an unusual source of prey, forcing the viewer to surmise as to the story behind it.

Travel/Scenic Category The surreal landscape of the sulphur pools at Dallol in the Danakil Depression, Ethiopia ©Trevor Cole. The secretive creatures of Namibia’s forgotten corner An intensive small and meso-mammal study of Kavango East conservancies Words and photographs by: Dr. Morgan Hauptfleisch, Namibia University of Science and Technology

I

n the north-eastern corner of Namibia, where the Kavango East region envelops northwest Botswana, lies a relatively undisturbed broad-leaf woodland on deep sandy soils with healthy populations of wildlife. Two conservancies, George Mukoya and Muduva Nyangana, cover an area of over 1 000 km2 directly north of Khaudum National Park, separated from it by only a narrow jeep track. Villages and family settlements dot the landscape, as do mahangu and maize fields. These crops, along with goats, are the primary form of subsistence here. The third conservancy in the region, Joseph Mbambangandu,

Some half hour later as I glanced in despair over my shoulder at the route we had come, the impossible seemed to appear – a minute speck of dust suggesting an approaching vehicle. Announcing to my husband that that vehicle had to be stopped and that if I had to disrobe to catch the driver’s attention I would do so, we waited as the speck took on the outline of a truck and steadily approached us. It was as agonising as waiting for a kettle to boil, but the driver slowed down and thankfully no disrobing was required

to induce him to stop. Emerging from the truck was a local farmer who was travelling with his wife and who I will call simply “Koen”. Koen calmly assessed the problem and offered as a solution the loan of his spare wheel in order to get back on the road. Of course his truck was not the same model or make as our hired twin cab and Koen told us to proceed with the mismatched wheel for a distance of six kilometres where we would find him waiting by his farm gate. With no further delay Koen set off, leaving us to limp slowly after his dust trail. I have been known to display a certain amount of scepticism when it comes to humanity and I confess

Taking South African wines to Namibia and beyond Flamingo magazine talks to Barry de Vries and Dirk Harris of Tamasa Trading about taking the ‘Tamasa wine route’ to Air Namibia’s destinations.

B

arry de Vries has an entrepreneurial spirit.

Whilst

working

as

a

marketing manager for a wine estate in Franschhoek, he became aware of major gaps in the African wine market. This led to the establishment of Tamasa Trading : Fine Wine Merchants in January 2010. Tamasa Trading selected Namibia as its first venture into Africa, with Barry receiving invaluable assistance from his brother Mynard Slabbert, who resides in Windhoek. Today, Tamasa has footholds in a number of African countries, including Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Liberia.

Further afield, the Greek

market is also being successfully cultivated. An opportunity opened up to host the Windhoek Extravaganza, a wine show which Tamasa has successfully hosted for the past nine years, and which has gone from strength to strength. Traditionally, Namibians were known to be consumers of beer, brandy and

38 |

whiskey. Wine consumption was mainly limited to the sweeter varieties. As a result of exposure to high quality boutique and quality wines available at the wine shows, the Namibian market has evolved into a lucrative market for the promotion of quality wines.

This market is also well

supported by the large number of South African expats only too keen to obtain their favourite wines directly from Tamasa.

Initially, in 2012, six wine farms were included; to date, this network has expanded to incorporate 10 wineries Flowing from the success of this show, Barry was approached by a number of wine farms who were having difficulty in marketing their wines into Africa. The next logical step was for Tamasa to set up a distribution network. Initially, in 2012, six wine farms were included; to date, this network has expanded to incorporate 10 wineries: Babylonstoren, Black Elephant Vintners, De Meye Wines, Hillcrest Wine and Olive Estate, Hoopenburg Wines, Lynx Wines, Marianne Wine Estate, Niel Joubert Wines, Noble Hill and Peter Falke Wines now trade successfully in Africa under the Tamasa Trading banner. After operating alone for a number of years, 37-year old Barry realised that, in order to successfully grow his business, additional assistance was required. Through previous business networking, he had become acquainted with Dirk Harris (31), who was at that stage employed by Sasfin Bank. Dirk’s creative flair coupled with his administration and business development Barry de Vries, left, with Dirk Harris, right.

afield in Africa. Based in Worcester, an integral part of the Tamasa team is Debbie Burton. Debbie not only takes care of the bulk of the administrative duties, but also handles all export logistics. She holds down the fort whilst Barry and Dirk travel abroad. She is a well known face at the wine shows, always willing and ready to jump in where necessary, a vital cog in keeping the Tamasa wheel turning. A majority of the estates represented by Tamasa Trading are owner operated. Tamasa Trading’s philosophy is that it is far easier to work with and for

commitment to their business as Barry and Dirk have to their own venture, and the long term goal is to build estates represented by Tamasa Trading. Another goal of theirs is to promote an appreciation for and a love of good shows has proven to be a very successful tool. The feedback from wine shows is an excellent indicator of which wines “work” in which markets. By limiting representation to ten distinctive boutique wine estates, it is possible to maintain a close, personal relationship

Realising that wine shows are a very successful means of promoting their business, the Windhoek wine show was soon followed by wine shows in Swakopmund, Lusaka and in the near future one in Maputo. The third annual Lusaka Wine Show, sponsored by Stanbic, saw an increase of 54% in attendance and an increase of 50% in wine sales compared to 2015. Although

A hallmark of

the wine shows is that the winemakers, owners and / or marketing managers are always on hand to guide visitors to the show through tastings and to answer any questions. This format has proved enormously popular and is a valuable asset. For example, at the last Windhoek show there were 18 wineries represented, including the core group of 10 estates represented by Tamasa. At the upcoming shows in Swakopmund and in Maputo, Tamasa will showcase the 10 boutique wineries they represent. These two energetic gents are very excited about the possibilities for the wine industry in Africa. Cheers!

The wheel story: New Models round up JAMES SIDDALL on what's happening in the wonderful world of wheels...

James Siddall

54 |

GT-RRR Improbable as it might sound to fans familiar with the vehicle, the allconquering Nissan GT-R has just gone and got yet better. And substantially so at that. The 2017 model has been revealed, and it includes styling upgrades inside and outside, major driving-performance enhancements, and key new features. In fact, these all make for the most significant

changes to Nissan's halo model since its 2007 introduction. The whole package is yet more head-swivelling than ever, with a significantly more premium and tech-laden cockpit, while a hot new colour called Ultimate Shiny Orange has been added. As for performance, well, the GT-R's much-lauded 3.8-liter V6 24-valve twin-turbocharged engine – with each unit handcrafted by its own technician – now bangs down

419kW and 637Nm of torque at 33005800 rpm. The revised engine is mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission that features smoother shifts and reduced noise levels. Handling is yet further enhanced, as is ride comfort, and the new car is the most comfortable GT-R yet. The first vehicles are expected in South Africa around the end of August. And, yes, the two Nissan High Performance Centres in SA will certainly assist customers from Namibia. Should a customer go to their nearest Namibian dealership, they'll be referred to the appropriate NPHC. We can't even begin to tell you how much we want one.

Star turn Despite what you might have been told as a kid, you really can have your cake and eat it. Case in point is the new Mercedes C 350 e plugin hybrid which mates frugality and refinement with a healthy dose of sporting performance. And with a range of 31 kilometres in purely electric mode, local emissionfree driving is now a reality. Its fourcylinder petrol engine, in conjunction with a powerful electric motor, gives it a total system output of 205 kW and

56 |

torque of 600 Nm. The South Africanbuilt C 350 e also turns in a zero-to100km/h time of 5.9 seconds, and a top speed of 250km/h. Yet overall fuel consumption is just 2.1 litres per 100km. Remarkable. Of course, the full range of creature comforts and safety systems that you'd expect from a Mercedes-Benz are all present and correct.

X-Rider marks the spot Isuzu specialises in bakkies as you doubtless know. And darn hardy,

competent ones at that. So it's just another reason to welcome a new special-edition to the range – the KB X-Rider. This machine is based on the KB 250 HO Hi-Rider 4x2 in extended and double cab body styles, and has a number of nifty styling cues. Among them, black diamond-cut 18-inch alloys and black tubular side steps, as well as certain features that mark this special-edition KB as being true to its workhorse roots. The X-Rider boasts an uprated towbar with a 2.1-tonne braked trailer capacity, LED daytime running lights, and remote keyless entry. It also comes with leather seats, with the X-Rider logo embroidered on the front headrests, while the leathertrimmed steering wheel, which is equipped with a full array of satellite controls, stands out thanks to the red stitching and Isuzu badge in its centre. Plus there's red stitching on the gearlever gaiter, steering wheel and the seats.

Piano Black inserts are used on the doors (with a bold red ‘X’ motif), with the same high-gloss finish used to highlight air conditioning vents, the sound system, and the gearshift console. Nice. Power comes courtesy of Isuzu's trusted 2.5-litre turbodiesel making a meaty 100kW and 320Nm, while you can get your X-Rider in Summit White, Switchblade Silver or Maranello Red.

Drop-top delight Given our climate, there are few automotive experiences as sublime as drop-top motoring. So the recent addition of the most affordable way to buy into the Mercedes convertible family – the new C-Class Cabriolet – is a welcome addition indeed. The fully automatic fabric soft top can be opened and closed in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h, while the likes of the Aircap electric draught stop system, and Airscarf neck-level heating mean it's a car for all seasons – winter included. The six-model range encompasses derivatives ranging from mild to wild, with outputs stretching from 125kW to 375kW, while for the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic variant permanent all-wheel drive is now available. Standard equipment levels are stellar. Naturally. Ditto safety levels. And styling is as graceful, evocative and

timeless as any of this vehicle's more expensive open-top Benz siblings.

Automatic for the people The Ford Ranger line-up has gone from large to massive. And with the addition of nine 2.2 TDCi automatic derivatives to the range, there are now no less than 36 models to choose from – which means there's a Ranger for every conceivable application. These nine new machines use a turbodiesel making 118kW and 385Nm mated to a slick six-speed automatic, and include Single Cab, Super Cab, and Double Cab derivatives, with vastly varying spec levels.

“The Ford Ranger has been a huge success story for Ford, not only in South Africa, but around the world,” says Tracey Delate, General Marketing Manager, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA). “The automatic transmission option on the Ranger 3.2 has dominated sales due to its smooth operation and ease of use, combined with the superb power and torque of the Duratorq TDCi engine. “We are delighted to now introduce this sophisticated automatic transmission to the Ranger 2.2 TDCi, providing unparalleled comfort and

| 57

driving convenience, matched to the superb performance and efficiency of Ford’s latest generation Duratorq diesel engines.” Watch these babies fly out of the showrooms.

Coupé coup We've long admired Lexus products – and now even more so with the addition of the RC 200t coupé to the line-up. Performance from the latest Lexus is healthy. Its two-litre, four-cylinder turbo motor makes 180kW and 350Nm of torque. That will take it from rest to 100km/h in 7.5 seconds, topping out at 230km/h. And – cliched as it might sound – the whole package is just oh-so effortlessly elegant. With a healthy dose of exclusivity thrown in. Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing for Lexus, rather nicely explains the market positioning of this machine. “Cars like the RC exist not as volume cars, but as aspirational products designed to draw in the young and the young at heart. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo provides an accessible point of entry for lifestyle buyers who want the

58 |

statement of a luxury coupé balanced with the efficiencies afforded by a smaller capacity powerplant. “In this context the new RC 200t fits the brief perfectly – it’s stylish, refined, frugal and generously stocked with a pleasing athleticism to it. It boasts an emotional draw too – key among them its striking looks – and some creditable dynamic skills.” Exactly Glenn. And as with pretty much all Lexuses, the list of standard equipment is long and lavish, while the whole package is beautifully built.

Fullback fast forward Here in this part of the world we have a monster appetite for one-ton bakkies. And while Fiat is hardly a name that we'd associate with this class of machine, the all-new Fiat Fullback seems set to take some market share. I haven't yet driven it, but it's billed as robust and reliable – like the rugby or American football position after which it is named – and the range encompasses three configurations, three trim levels, three engines and two gearboxes. The Fullback is part of the Fiat Professional brand.

Astra travelling The all-new Opel Astra has everything it takes to be a class leader, writes JAMES SIDDALL...

60 |

I

t is hardly hyperbole to say that the Opel Astra has its work cut out for it. After all, it sits in a segment whose stalwarts include the muchlauded VW Golf 7. But the new, 11th-generation Astra is more than up to the task. For a start it's the 2016 European Car of the Year, and it comes complete with a trio of engines – namely a one-litre turbo, a new 1.4-litre turbo, and a 1.6-litre turbo.

It's also laden with the sort of driver assistance and safety systems that you'd expect from far more expensive cars. And it's crushingly capable, comfortable, and competent. Now I've just spent a week with a 1.4T Enjoy model with a six-speed manual 'box. This included extensive urban travelling as well as a thousand kilometre-plus inter-city trip – and I can confirm that the Astra doesn't just live up to expectations. It exceeds them on every front from ride and refinement to economy and equipment levels, with “my” 1.4T model sipping a sparrowlike 5.1 litres per 100km.

Yet performance proved excellent. This motor makes 110kW and 230Nm between 2000 and 4000rpm in manual guise (there is also a six-speed automatic). Enough to whip it from rest to 100km/h in 8.5 seconds, topping out at 215km/h. It also all just reinforced the fact that this five-door hatchback is not just a mild evolution of the outgoing car but a massive leap forward. There is a huge amount to say about this Opel. I'm going, however, to focus on the highlights and these include it being up to 200kg lighter (depending on the model), while at the same time torsional rigidity is improved. This translates into superb wieldiness and fuel economy, all further aided by excellent aerodynamics (figure on a CD of just 0.285),

and start/stop technology in all three of the Ecotec engines. Remarkably in an age where cars seem to get larger and lardier with each new incarnation, the Astra's overall length is down by five centimetres, and its height is decreased by half of that. Yet the interior is roomier than ever, and it's also worth noting – and this comes after a total of perhaps 16 hours spent in “my” test unit – the seats are superbly supportive, scoring close to a perfect ten on the ergonomic scale. Tech abounds too. Try nextgeneration IntelliLink touch screen with satellite navigation and an advanced infotainment interface as well as IntelliLux LED matrix lighting, which truly does turn night into day. Also available is the latest generation Opel Eye front camera.

The camera has a wide range of functions which include monitoring the IntelliLux LED Matrix System, Traffic Sign Assist (TSA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) with Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Following Distance Indication (FDI), and Forward Collision Alert (FCA) with Low Speed Collision Mitigation Braking (LSCMB). These systems might sound complex in theory – but in practice they work seamlessly and simply, and rapidly become indispensable. Forward Collision Alert, for instance, helps avoid or reduce front-end crashes. Basically it uses the car's front camera system in the windscreen to detect a vehicle directly ahead, within a distance of 60 metres. Approach the car in front too quickly and you're met with a warning chime, while an alert in the Driver Information Centre is provided, and a flashing red LED stripe is projected on the windscreen. FCA operates automatically above eight km/h, and can be deactivated when not needed. Of course, safety measures are extensive, and in addition to a rigid passenger cell there are front airbags for driver and co-driver, thorax-pelvis side airbags and full-length curtain airbags for the first and second row. Naturally, too, you have the likes of Cornering Brake Control to provide directional vehicle stability during cornering while braking, and Torque Vectoring by Brakes. This improves agility and gives a more direct steering feel by initiating braking interventions at the inner wheel of the rear axle or

both axles, while engine torque may also be increased to negate the effect. Yet it all works so seamlessly that you don't notice it. All Astras include a five-year/120 000km warranty, a five-year/90 000km service plan, and roadside assistance. But perhaps most importantly of all, this machine is yet more entertaining and involving to pilot than its illustrious forebears.

on approach to enriching the lives of others is as innovative as it is complex and intensely moving. They work in underserved communities, and mobilise the local community to reinvent their own neighbourhood through extraordinary art projects on a massive scale. Their work in Brazil spawned sister projects worldwide, and in 2011, they took their paint, brushes and concept to North Philadelphia to revitalise a downtrodden commercial strip – they motivated the local youth to paint the facades of buildings a rainbow of riotous colour. This Dutch duo has been invited to present their work in numerous countries and on different occasions, ranging from a show at the United Nations Headquarters to a recent talk for TED Global. They work on a multitude of projects, so they travel extensively to paint and explore communities worldwide. A successful crowd-funding

their recent return to Rio to continue their dream: to organize community members to paint an entire Favela hill. Jeroen Koolhaas uses his graphic talent to create the designs used in the Favela Painting Project, while Dre Urhahn has built up a production background used in the organization of the Favela Painting Project. The Royal Family The Royal Portfolio is a family owned and run group of luxury hotels located in iconic South African destinations. By: The Roving Ambassador

T

he Royal Portfolio is a family owned and run group of luxury hotels located in iconic destinations across Southern Africa. It started in 1999 when Liz and Phil Biden decided to turn their family bush lodge into a private safari lodge. That lodge is now Royal Malewane - one of the most exclusive safari lodges in Africa and a favourite among celebrities and politicians the world over. Liz explains that, “We wanted to share the lovely things that we

as a family had been so fortunate to experience over the years. We had absolutely no idea that we would experience the success and recognition that we have. That family ethos permeates throughout The Royal Portfolio, where guests are made to feel completely relaxed and at home. Birkenhead House in Hermanus and La Residence in Franschhoek were soon added to The Royal Portfolio, offering guests a coastal

Traveler – a wonderful accolade and affirmation of Liz’s natural talents for design and hospitality. The Royal Portfolio opened The One Above penthouse as their first ‘Private Residence’ in 2014 and in 2017 the Biden family will realise their dream of opening a hotel in their home city of Cape Town. The Silo will open in the historic grain silo complex above Zeitz MOCAA in the V&A Waterfront, completing the circuit of quintessentially South African experiences and providing an experience focussed on the art and culture of South Africa’s Mother City. “It’s addictive”, says Liz in the throes of the family’s latest and most ambitious project – every one of The Silo suites and bedrooms will be individually decorated by the stylish wand of Liz Biden. The Silo hotel will open on 1 March 2017. As for what comes next, Matt Biden says, “There’s nothing concrete to report yet, but I think it’s safe to say that The Silo won’t be the last property in The Royal Portfolio.”

Nam Flavour Two ambassadors for the country unite to showcase the real Namibia, sharing authentic Nam flavour with the rest of the world

By: Ron Swilling

I

t’s an unlikely, yet perfect pair: the only white Kwaito singer in the world and the lodge company that supports local interests and has incorporated the telling of Namibia’s stories into it’s brand essence. EES, aka Easy Eric Sell, and the Gondwana Collection merged creative juices to promote Namibia by producing a series of video clips depicting the various routes between the fifteen Gondwana lodges. The routes have been chosen to highlight the landscape and include intriguing stories and stops along the way, giving the traveller a taste of the feast to come. “What do you promote?” I asked EES as we drove from Kalahari Anib Lodge towards Windhoek. It had been an educational drive where I learned about local trends and brushed up my scant knowledge of popular music. “Positivity, happiness and a lot of fun,” EES answered, and added: “And, obviously, Namibia.” And, I have no doubt that he does. The popular Namibian musician has put Namibia on the map by creating his own brand of Kwaito music that leaps over the colour bar, uniting people with music that everyone can relate to. Kwaito, a genre of music originating in the late 80s

and early 90s, merges Hip Hop, Reggae and House with a unique blend of African rhythm. “It’s about celebrating the good life,” EES explained. The very danceable music that was born in the angst of the apartheid era, has become the melodic music of celebration that leaves the world of colour barriers far behind. Influenced by parents who loved to dance, EES grew up in an environment filled with music. He naturally started writing his own lyrics and recorded his first song while at school, inspired by groups like Wu-Tang and Eminem. This led him to study sound engineering in Cape Town to improve his recording skills. While there, he started a band called Odyssey Crew with members from various South African ethnic groups, incorporating music from different genres. But it was when this fifth generation Namibian spread his wings in Germany, that he really begin to listen to and experiment with Kwaito music, yearning for the sounds of his native Africa. In 2006, he invited upcoming Namibian Kwaito musicians to Germany to record a song called ‘International’, realising his vision to introduce

Kwaito to the rest of the world. This was his breakthrough into Kwaito music. At first the Namibian public were surprised to see a white man doing Kwaito, but over the years have embraced EES as one of their own: Namibian. As EES says: “Music is one of the most powerful tools to connect people.” He explained, “When the artist is on the stage, and two people come to the show; rich, poor, yellow, black, they celebrate the same song and it connects them.” EES has since created over fifty music videos and has released 13 albums, many of them collaborative. He has also produced a range of clothes, books and footwear, an energy drink and has coined some distinctively Namibian words, which were quickly adopted by the populace. Words include ‘Nam Slang’ for Namibian German, replacing the out-dated word Südwester Deutsch (and he has even written a Nam Slang dictionary), and ‘Shaggon Waggon’ for the beloved old Kombi. The most popular is ‘Nam Flava’ and people are now using the hashtag to describe something that is quintessentially Namibian. The Namibian flag plays an important part in EES’s image, is incorporated into the design of all

How to know when you are dealing with a Namibian It’s no secret that the people from Namibia are very unique in very weird and wonderful ways.

By: Jescey Visagie

M

any people who have met Namibians are shocked and delighted by the people who come across their path. However the locals seem completely oblivious to their strange little habits; so a while back, Martha Mukaiwa made a list of the '40 Signs you were born and raised in Namibia', and we were inspired. So we incorporated her list... and compiled one of our own. We have put together a list of things that will be a dead giveaway that you are dealing with a Namibian. These unique people are fantastic linguists and when they hear ‘Locky Clest’ they know that it means ‘Rocky Crest’.

100 |

When they speak, they hop between languages almost as frantically as a rabbit being chased by a fox. But somehow through all of those languages you still know what they were trying to say. They say “Toyota Fortuner” as in ‘fortune’ and not like ‘tuna’ as the rest of the world apparently does. They consider padkos to be a fundamental part of any road trip, regardless of whether they’re driving to a friend or to Timbuktu. Jägermeister, beer and Oros are crucial to a healthy diet and at least one of these can be found in every household.

They consider meat to be essential to your health, and they are very serious when telling you that chicken may as well be a vegetable. They have probably eaten something really strange and unexpected, like crocodile, springbok testicles, a variety of insects or ostrich eggs. Namibians are fantastic story tellers and love to add all those unnecessary flourishes that can turn a five second story into a two-hour narrative. There will be a braai or kapana at least once a week, or the week would have been wasted. When they experience good customer service

they are shocked and, more often than not, flustered. They call traffic lights, robots. They try to find any excuse to have a party; Wednesday, noon, weddings, rain... and of course a beer once the plane has passed. They approach winter much like a Game of Thrones character, “Winter is coming!” You’ve heard them explain to someone that wild animals do not roam the city streets. Generally. There have been exceptions. They’ve also had to explain that Namibia is not a province of South Africa. Any more. They are constantly wishing and praying for rain, all the time, non-stop. But after a few daylight hours without direct sunlight,

they suffer withdrawal and quickly sink into a depression. They are convinced Namibia has the best sunsets in the world. Don’t argue, you know they’re right. They have seen legitimate sick notes for being cursed, haunted or possessed. They refer to home as Nam. As in Nam-ibia and not Viet-nam, as everyone always assumes. Every household owns at least one potjie-pot in one size or another, and they are generally used for cooking, storing keys or as ashtrays (depending on the size). They know South Africa came up with biltong, but they also know that Namibia has the best biltong in the world. And they are right; there

is no two ways about it. Whenever it begins to rain, some Namibians break out the strange habit of making pancakes. It has become a well-known rainy-day craving. You can also be sure that you will always hear a Namibian before you see them, because “quietly” is not a term they understand. If you have ever met someone that portrays these qualities and habits, you can be sure they have some Namibian in them. I can guarantee locals will be reading each line with suppressed laughter because you know the words to be true…even if you try to deny it. Namibia is a unique and wonderful country with lots of exciting habits to keep visitors entertained and delighted, and to keep the locals on their toes.

Highhumour A sickly patient went to her doctor’s office where she underwent a complete physical exam. The doctor said, “I have some very grave news for you. You only have six months to live.” The patient asked, “Oh doctor, what should I do?” The doctor replied, “Marry an accountant.” “Will that make me live longer?” asked the patient. “No,” said the doctor, “but it will SEEM longer.”

Why do accountants make good lovers? They’re great with figures.

problem you didn’t know you had in a way you don’t understand.

In a crowded city at a busy bus stop, a beautiful young woman who was waiting for a bus, was wearing a tight mini skirt. As the bus stopped and it was her turn to get on, she became aware that her skirt was too tight to allow her leg to come up to the height of the first step of the bus. Slightly embarrassed and with a quick smile to the bus driver, she reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little, thinking that this would give her enough slack to raise her leg. Again, she tried to make the step only to discover she still couldn’t. So, a little more embarrassed, she once again reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little more, and for the second time attempted the step, and, once again, much to her dismay, she could not raise her leg. With a little smile to the driver, she again reached behind a third time to unzip a little more and again was unable to make the step. About this time, a large man who was standing behind her picked her up easily by the waist and placed her gently on the step of the bus. She went ballistic and turned to the would be Samaritan and yelled, “How dare you touch my body! I don’t even know who you are!” The man smiled and said, “Well, ma’am, normally I would agree with you, but after you unzipped me three times, I kinda figured we were friends!” 102 |

Out of all the lies I’ve told, “Just kidding!” is my favourite.

Mail your submission to humor@media-namibia.com and you might become our latest high altitude joker.

That awkward moment when you’ve already said ‘what?’ 3 times and still have no idea what the other person said, so you just agree!

Two accountants go to their local restaurant on their lunch break, when armed robbers burst in. While several of the robbers take the money from the tellers, others line the customers, including the accountants, up against a wall, and proceed to take their wallets, watches, and other valuables. While this is going on accountant number one jams something in accountant number two’s hand. Without looking down, accountant number two whispers, “What is this?” to which accountant number one replies, “it’s that $50 I owe you.”

If a man said he’ll fix it, he will. There is really no need to remind him every 6 months!

A Rabbi dies and goes to heaven. As he’s approaching the gates, he hears a band of singing and dancing angels approach, and begins to get excited. The lead angel approaches the Rabbi and asks if he would mind stepping aside for a moment. Shocked, the Rabbi does so. The angels march out of the gates and encircle a man who has also approached the gates. The man is a bus driver. The joyous parade of angels carry the bus driver in ahead of the Rabbi. When the parade is gone, an angel returns to the Rabbi and says, “You can come in now.” The angel begins to lead the Rabbi inside alone. The Rabbi, somewhat confused, says, “I’m not one to make waves or anything, but I need to know something. I think I’ve been a good Rabbi. I’ve worked hard all my life. Why is it that the bus driver gets led in by a band of angels ahead of me?” The angel says, “Well, frankly, Rabbi, whenever you preached, people slept. But whenever he drove, people prayed. HARD!!! “

Manifesto Concept Car won Ferrari the Top Design School Challenge 2015 The winner of the Ferrari Top Design School Challenge 2015 has been announced, Manifesto has been awarded the first place. The second and third place goes to FL and de Esfera, all these submissions aim to demonstrate the Ferraris in 2040. The jury decided to make Manifesto the winner due to the completeness of this concept car design, as well as the students’ ability to understand the overall vision of the car starting from the exterior, cabin, and running gear. The jaw-dropping door opening mechanism is also one of the highlights of the interior functions, implementing future-forward technologies. Even though it boasts certain orthodox features, the exterior is still recognisable.

Pulse virtual reality music controller with advanced 3D sensor Some people are able to play multiple musical instruments, but it would be hard to carry them all. Titan Reality introduces you to Pulse, a virtual reality musical instrument platform for the future that makes it possible for you to discover and play any musical instrument with a simple app and cloud library. Nowadays, we can enjoy mobile access to our favourite music and games anywhere, so why not with musical instruments? Pulse is a single controller that allows you to play music in a oneclick app. This device adds a third dimension to bringing a new emotion to music making, a

revolutionary 3D experience at your fingertips. Pulse is equipped with an advanced 3D sensor. This technology is available today, but it is more sensitive and more intelligent compared to any 3D game controller. Pulse features a generous high-res 3D space, enough of a surface for twohanded interaction. The sensor is able to track any object in 3D and at full speed. It analyses your movements instantly from a position in space, rotations, impacts with velocity, pressure, friction on its surface, or hits in the air. The ability to recognise hand gestures and objects allows you to enjoy a realistic and creative way of controlling sound. Download the Titan Reality App to turn this device into a new instrument or a piece of audio gear. You can get access to thousands of virtual musical instruments; Pulse would instantly become a DJ deck, hand percussion, keyboard, 3D controller sound, harp, drum, guitar, electronic sounds, and much more.

technology. It has been designed and developed to stand out from the crowd. Thermal technology in a phone would be highly functional for a wide variety of cases. The Cat S60 is also extremely robust and tough, an excellent rugged smartphone, it exceeds military specs. This smartphone is built to withstand dropping it onto concrete from up to 1.8 metres; it is dustproof as well as waterproof. The super-bright display can be viewed even under bright sunlight, while the touchscreen can be controlled with wet fingers or while wearing gloves.

The Skypak La Barrique Edition is a specially designed trolley made with an old wine barrel. An old oak barrel protects the wine so that it can take its time to mature for several years. After this barrel has done its work, it can also be a perfect object for another use, such as a nice covering for modern wine trolleys or coolers. These barrels are robust and due to their rolling system, they are pretty flexible. Thanks to these wine barrels, the La Barrique Edition trolleys feature a warm wood character, making it visually appealing. The wine barrel was given a second life by Skypak. The staves of Barrique are attached to the original airplane trolleys along with the precocious handcrafted work. The cool thing is, that the oak wood still emits a gentle red wine perfume that can inspire your senses.

Automatic Wine Preserver How to keep an open bottle of wine fresh? Well, some people use a rubber cork, while others use a vacuum pump. Elliot Cohen has designed an automatic wine preserver to pump the air out of an opened bottle of wine. All you need to do is insert this device into an opened bottle of wine, secure the preserver, and then the vacuum will remove the excess air automatically. It is important for Elliot to feature this device in an aesthetic way and with that in mind, he designed the wine preserver with a merlottinted base that subtly highlights the vacuum stopper.

There’s a time to be bold. And a time to be cautious.

With 51 of his 63 wins coming from knockouts, Jack Dempsey’s bold boxing style had made him the most feared man in the sport. But when an outright underdog took his title by forcing him to go the full ten rounds, he learnt a valuable lesson. You can’t always rely on a bold approach to lead you to victory. Which is why, when it comes to investing, we never take anything as a given, and always utilise the power of restraint. Because knowing when to be bold, and when to be cautious, makes all the difference. And that’s what makes us Wealthsmiths™.

Enhanced indexation delivers attractive returns to equity investors E

nhanced index strategies, with their focus on low risk return opportunities and diversification, can be an important part of an equity solution. Fazila Manjoo, Portfolio Manager and Analyst at Prescient Investment Management, adds that enhanced index funds lend themselves to bespoke investment solutions developed according to client specifications. “The philosophy behind enhanced indexation is to amplify returns on the underlying fund while minimising risk. This is usually achieved through small, incremental enhancements using strategies in conjunction with indexation, with the goal to outperform the index. “The result is a hybrid of active and passive management. Excess returns tend to be modest and offset the costs of managing the fund. “This is significant because many index tracker funds under-perform their indices after costs have been deducted. By adding enhancements, you can offset the costs inherent in passive offerings, including management costs and trading costs,” said Manjoo. The Prescient Equity Top 40 Fund, for example, is an enhanced equity index fund that aims to outperform the FTSE/JSE Africa Top 40 index over time. Returns are enhanced by taking advantage of low risk arbitrage opportunities in the market and other quantitative strategies. “We believe that enhanced index strategies should be considered by any investor with a sizable allocation to equities. It is applicable to investors who want to allocate away from traditional equity strategies in an

112 |

Fazila joined Prescient in September 2011 as a portfolio manager and analyst and soon thereafter took over as lead manager on the Global Growth Fund. In 2012, Fazila also took over as manager on the SA Equity Active, Equity Income and Specialist Index (including environmentally friendly) Portfolios. She is responsible for the day to day portfolio management as well as equity and market research. Fazila completed her BSc in Mathematical statistics in 2002, followed by a post graduate managerial and actuarial science course at UCT. She is currently busy with her CFA qualification.

effort to reduce their active equity risk. Conversely it is also applicable to investors with a large allocation to passive strategies who want to generate returns greater than a purely passive equity allocation,” said Manjoo. The trend towards enhanced index funds has also seen Prescient create

its own bespoke indices according to client specifications. Solutions include the Living Planet Fund, developed in conjunction with WWF International, the world’s largest conservation organisation. The fund offers private and institutional investors the opportunity to align sustainability with investment goals. On the growing popularity of indexation and passive investing, Manjoo said one contributing factor is that South Africa is a difficult market to achieve excess returns through stock picking. Traditional active asset managers have added very little value relative to their benchmarks over the last 10 years. As a result, money managers are increasingly applying their stock picking activities to offshore stocks. “Equity is a risky and volatile asset class. Since the last financial crisis, the focus has predominantly been on investing in risks that are appropriately rewarded. Traditional fundamental processes typically rely on forecasting earnings or stock recommendations, and are therefore not always skilled in managing or minimising unintended risk exposures,” she said. Delivering the benefits of enhanced indexation requires an investment philosophy that is strictly adhered to, a process that integrates risk management throughout, and the adaptability to respond to changes in the investment environment. At Prescient Investment Management, quantitative processes are utilized for efficient execution of enhanced indexation. These processes are systematic, reliable and lend themselves to the evaluation of the massive amounts of information required in generating valuations.

Rhino Facts: In the late 1970s aggressive poaching took the Namibian Black Rhino to the brink of extinction. Thousands of rhino were slaughtered to satisfy the demand for fashion accessories and oriental medicines. By the early 1980s the population had plummeted from 65,000 to just 60. The ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project was established to reintroduce and conserve rhino in the Erongo region, reintroducing Black Rhino into the area after the last of its kind was caught in 1974. For every bottle of OASIS sold a contribution is made to the ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project, helping to conserve and protect these beautiful creatures.

Baggage Guidelines

At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.

Our rules pertaining to baggage include the following allowance, with maximum weight of 7 kg each, and maximum size 55 x 38 x 20 cm; plus an overcoat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a ladies hand bag, a reasonable amount of reading material, and a laptop. We also allow a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches as hand baggage.
