Brewery Stops Brewing We weren’t willing to compromise, because we would never expect you to. Windhoek temporarily halts production lines waiting for quality ingredients.
Windhoek Brewery 1930s
WINDHOEK In the 1930s it became difficult to get the barley and hops we normally used to brew our beer. We could have changed our recipe or used second-rate ingredients to keep the numbers up. But we didn’t, because the quality of our beer is everything to us. And that’s not worth compromising.
H
ermann Ohlthaver and Carl List made a pact when they consolidated four breweries to found South West Breweries almost 100 years ago. If they were going to brew beer, they were going to brew the very best beer they could. No compromise. They were passionate about their dream, and knew the beer they wanted to produce would only ever be as good as the ingredients used to brew it. So they crossed the ocean in search of the finest barley and hops available, and brought them back to what was then South-West Africa. The two friends truly loved beer. That’s why they made the decision to stop the production lines, when
because of the war it became difficult to get quality ingredients. We could have changed our recipe. We could have found different ingredients that were more readily available, or second-rate barley and hops that would have made an OK beer. But we weren’t willing to compromise, because we would never expect you to. We waited and waited and waited… until eventually we took delivery of quality barley and hops once more. Our brewery started up and we celebrated the first new batch with pride. For us it’s 100% Pure Beer. Brewed with only malted barley, hops and water. No compromise. Not back then. Not ever.

An “underwater” photograph triumphs at the Siena International Photo Awards The Siena International Photo Awards winners were recently announced in Siena’s Teatro dei Rozzi. The creator and artistic director of the event, Luca Venturi, considered it remarkable that this number of photographers from across the globe had descended on Siena, united by their passion for photography. This international event elicited a superb response, and the winners and their entries are nothing short of breathtaking. The categories ranged from the Pangea Awards of Excellence to the ‘big players’, to the specific categories, namely wildlife, sport, storyboard, open colour, open monochrome, travel, nature, people and portrait, wine, and under 20. The SIPAContest award ceremony opened a month of events of the Art Photo Travel Festival, where the city hosted personal and collective exhibitions, as well as numerous collateral events, such as workshops, photo tours and other events. www.artphototravel.it www.sipacontest.com

The wheel story: New Models round up JAMES SIDDALL on what's happening in the wonderful world of wheels...

If you don't own wings you'll never fly Honda, in case you didn't know, recently launched a small jet – the HondaJet. More than that, it's the fastest in its class (a maximum cruise speed of 422 knots), soars the highest (43 000 feet), is the most fuel-efficient, and is billed as “the world's most advanced light jet.” The international aviation market certainly seems to rate it very highly indeed. It also has a range of 1 223 nautical miles, and is on sale in North America, South America and Europe, and now for the first it's being marketed in the Middle East – a potentially
huge market. Just don't expect your own local Honda dealer to have one in stock.
Mokka Java Opel's popular compact SUV, the Mokka, has just received a mild makeover - “mild,” no doubt, on the basis that if it ain't broken don't fix it. Part of the update is a name change to “MOKKA X.” Why? “The uppercase style is illustrative of an even bolder approach to modern motoring, while the X in the nomenclature is the new global identifier for future Opel SUV and crossover vehicles,” says Opel. Other changes include new headlight clusters combining daytime running lights and LED technology, while interior trim is revised, too, and the Cosmo model now packs a high-end infotainment system. Mechanically things stay unaltered, and the fourmodel lineup still includes Enjoy and Cosmo trim choices in either manual or automatic. Power to all MOKKA X models comes from Opel’s excellent 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged Ecotec petrol engine, which produces 103kW and 200Nm between 1 850 and 4 900rpm. Zero-to-100 km/h is reached in 9.8 seconds with a top speed of 196 km/h
40 |
for the six-speed manual models. The two models with the six-speed auto 'box hit zero-to-100 km/h in 10.7 seconds topping out at 191km/h.
Marvellous Megane When it comes to misconceptions, well, French vehicles are shrouded in them. Some still believe that they embody questionable reliability, poor parts availability, and limited longevity. But if that was ever the case, it has long since changed, and Renault for one purveys a range of hugely
desirable machines including the new Megane which vies for the title of the most individualistic hatchback you can buy. There's a quartet of models in the range, and a week spent with the flagship Megane GT rammed home its appeal. This vehicle employs a Renault Sport Teamdeveloped “Energy TCe 205 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine,” to give it its full name. With 151kW and 280Nm from 2 400rpm running through a sevenspeed dual-clutch EDC gearbox, it's a swift performer. High equipment levels include fourwheel steering on this halo model, and an on-board multimedia interface in the guise of Renault's R-LINK2. This comes complete with a big 8.7-inch touchscreen display. There's also a full suite of active and passive safety aids, and all the creature comforts you could wish for plus a claimed fuel consumption of six litres per 100km. Above all, it looks almost postspage-age, with taut lines and full LED headlights, as well as permanently-lit rear LED lights – all of which add to its daringly different appeal.
Impreza impresses Over in Japan the latest Subaru Impreza has been named that country's 2016-2017 Car of the Year. Perhaps not altogether surprising as in October last year alone it outsold its monthly sales target more than fourfold, with 11 050 orders. A lot of this demand, says Subaru, comes from customers switching from other brands. Closer to home, we look forward to announcing the winner of the 2017 South African Car of the Year title in the early part of this year. It's going to be a close one with an array of 10 excellent finalists that include the Audi A4, the Honda Civic, the Opel Astra, the Toyota Fortuner, and two VW's in the guise of the Passat and the Tiguan.
G-Force! When it comes to off-road machines, few if any vehicles are quite as iconic as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Now for the first time 20 000 have been built in one year, setting a new production record that is indicative of global demand, and dare we say good taste. The twenty thousandth G-Class to roll off the production line was a white Mercedes-AMG G63 equipped with desirable options.
| 41
“The individualisation and continuous technical optimisation of the G-Class contribute to the great success of the original off-road icon which still makes no compromises when it comes to off-road," says Dr. Gunnar Güthenke, head of the off-road product group at Mercedes-Benz. “The production of 20 000 G-Classes in one year confirms the high demand for the ‘G’ and likewise the quality of our vehicles, something that is highly appreciated by our customers. I am very pleased and also proud that some of our employees have been on board since production started around 37 years ago.” The legendary G-Class has been in production on behalf of Mercedes-
42 |
Benz at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria since 1979, and its popularity just grows. Over quarter of a million vehicles have been delivered to customers since the first model was introduced.
Blitzen benz And it's a new record. The MercedesAMG GT R has set the fastest lap time on Germany's Nürburgring Nordschleife for any road-going sportscar ever tested by respected motoring magazine “sport auto.” The 430kW blitzen Benz turned in a time of 7:10.9 minutes around what's widely held to be the world's toughest racetrack.
Open-Air extravaganza There's open-top motoring. And then, well, there's open-top motoring as
embodied by the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet – the first cabriolet from the Mercedes-Maybach brand. This goddess of the wind is set to go on sale later this year – but just 300 will be made, and the price tag is expected to be around 300 000 Euros. Driving force comes from a six-litre, turbocharged V12 making 463kW and 1000Nm. That will waft lucky occupants from zero-to-100km/h in 4.1 seconds, with a top speed of 250km/h. As you might expect, its exclusivity and luxury is in another realm, with special elements including everything from 20-inch Maybach forged wheels to hand-finished detailing to Swarovksi headlamps to deep-pile floormats. Individualisation options abound for this big open-top four-seater, while also standard is a luggage set comprising two large travel bags and two lifestyle bags made of the original vehicle leather. And that's just for starters. Interestingly, the current MercedesMaybach range includes a specialprotection version – the S600 Guard, billed as “the world's first passenger car to meet the highest ballistic protection level for civilian vehicles, VR10.” A Pullman version will be available in the second half of this year.

Bavarian brilliance The BMW 7 Series astounded us when it debuted – now with the launch of further derivatives, it's taking excellence to new highs...

Y
ou may or may not recall that when the all-new BMW 7 Series was launched to media in Cape Town in the early part of last year, we gave it close to full marks on these pages. Quite something considering it competes in a rarefied segment with rivals numbering luminaries such as the Jaguar XJ, the Audi A8, the Lexus LS, the Maserati Quattroporte and – most obviously of all – the MercedesBenz S-Class. Among other things, we judged it as “incomparable,” and were led to say: “Cars are hugely emotive things.
To write about them dispassionately and clinically is difficult, and perhaps a little pointless as in that case the writer might as well just bang out the technical details and specifications, and leave it at that.” But we did focus on the fact that it raised the technology bar to new highs, being essentially semi-autonomous, noting that some of that tech included, “full LED headlights as standard, with the option of BMW Laserlight, which premiered on the i8.” We added that, “The head-up display now provides a 75-percent larger projection on to the windscreen, while safety measures include steering and lane control assistant, lane keeping assistant, and front and rear crossing traffic warning.” Also noteworthy was BMW's gesture control that
allows intuitive and easy interaction with the infotainment system using predefined hand movements. So too was the magic-carpet ride thanks to standard two-axle automatic self-levelling air suspension and dynamic damper control, with power running to the rear wheels through an eight-speed gearbox. Yet for all that this sixth-generation of BMW's super saloon could be driven with gusto when the need or urge arose. “It weighs as much as 130kg less than the car it replaces, and while it will waft in serene, sybaritic comfort, as we discovered during a section of the launch when journalists were chauffeur-driven, it's an astoundingly agile machine when pushed hard,” we said. Almost a year later we stand by every word we wrote. Especially when it comes to the car's high-tech and sheer drivability.
| 45
But what's important to note is that on the launch only two versions were available: the three-litre, six-cylinder turbodiesel 730d (195kW, 620Nm), and the three-litre, six-cylinder turbopetrol 740i (240kW, 450Nm). Both brilliant, of course. Since then the range has expanded, and having recently spent a week with the 750i version (also available in long-wheelbase Li guise) plus having attended the launch of the 740e plugin hybrid, we're more beguiled and bewitched by the big Beamer than ever. If there is a word beyond “brilliant” and “sublime” feel free to insert it here. The 750i uses a 4.4-litre, turbopetrol V8 making 330kW, and a massive 650Nm of torque from as low as 1 800rpm. Enough to surge it from standstill to 100km/h in under five seconds, and on to an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h. “Our” test 750i was finished in an arresting colour called “Imperial Blue Brilliant Effect Metallic” and loaded with options that gave it Sultan-like levels of luxury – including a Bowers & Wilkin surround sound system, while the optional BMW Laserlight cut it into the night like, well, lasers. Above all this big machine proved effortlessly easy to use on a daily basis
46 |
and supremely luxurious – and when driven with enthusiasm, far sportier than you could possibly imagine such a big car to be. The 740e plug-in hybrid embodies all these qualities – plus a fiendishly clever drivetrain. Its combustion engine takes the guise of a two-litre, four-cylinder, twinturbo unit making 190kW and 400Nm – leading its makers to bill it as the most powerful four-cylinder engine ever fitted to a series-produced BMW. The electric motor, meanwhile, makes a maximum of 83kW and 250Nm. And with an effective total of some 240kW and 500Nm running through an eightspeed Steptronic transmission, this big Beamer will surge from zero to 100km/h in 5.4 seconds, topping out at 250km/h.
Fuel consumption is billed as low as 2.2 litres per 100km. But it doesn't end there. In the early part of this year the range will be augmented by a halo model in the guise of the M760Li xDrive. A car with galvanising vital statistics, including all-wheel drive, and 448kW and 800Nm from a bi-turbo 6.6-litre V12 – which gives an acceleration figure of zeroto-100km/h in a physics-defying 3.7 seconds. Indeed, that's the sort time you might have expected from an Italian supercar only a few years ago. And naturally, all the luxury and tech – and then some – that you'd expect of the most expensive BMW 7 Series available will be present and correct.

Star turn The sublime new Mercedes C350 e plug-in hybrid proves that it's possible to have your cake and eat it...

A
top speed of 250km/h. A scorching zero-to-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds. Ultra-low emissions. Superlative comfort and prestige. And a claimed combined fuel consumption of an unbelievable 2.1 litres per 100km (yes, you read right). That's the new Mercedes C350 e – the plug-in hybrid version of the C-Class, which is one of our favourites in the competitive compact luxury segment, and winner of the World Car of the Year title. It's also proof that – despite what your parents might have told you as a kid – you can have your cake and eat it, after all. In a first for Mercedes, this plug-in hybrid is built on the African continent, at the Mercedes-Benz East London plant, with both local and export markets in mind. On the move, meanwhile, the Merc can be driven in purely electric mode, offering a range of 31km for totally emissions-free driving. Its four-cylinder, two-litre turbopetrol motor is rated at 155kW and 350Nm of
50 |
torque. The electric motor has an output of 60kW and 340Nm – and one of the great advantages of electric drive is that all that output and torque is available from the moment you touch the throttle. With both internal combustion and powerful electric motor combined, the C350 e has a total output of 205kW and a massive 600Nm, with the two motors being capable of working together seamlessly. And besides its galvanising vital statistics, just some of the perks of this Merc include the fact that it starts silently and runs in electric mode. Under full acceleration, the electric motor kicks in to further boost that turbopetrol engine, while during braking and coasting, energy is recovered and stored in the battery. Charging times are rapid. Thanks to an intelligent on-board charging system, the battery can be recharged in around one hour 45 minutes at a wall-box. Alternatively, charging via a standard domestic socket is possible,
in around two hours. And even though space is taken up in the boot by the battery, the C350 e still has a generous boot capacity of 335 litres. Yet for all its highly-advanced technology, this Merc is as simple to drive as any other car you care to name, and perhaps even more so. You simply slot the seven-speed automatic transmission into Drive and... go. But if you want you can intervene manually and regulate the hybrid interplay, with the help of five operating modes and three transmission modes. This is done via an operating mode switch and a transmission mode switch located in the centre console. A display in the middle of the instrument cluster shows the current setting. On the move, this Benz is as sybaritic as any of its stablemates, especially with its standard Airmatic air suspension which gives floating-on-a-cloud ride quality, while handling remains sharp. And naturally all the luxuries and safety aids you'd expect at this level are part of the deal – and then some. For instance, as standard you get Attention Assist, which warns the driver of fatigue and a lack of concentration. It's a clever system this, and almost impossible to fool. You also get Collision Prevention Assist Plus that, among other things, can autonomously brake the car at speeds of up to 200km/h if a crash is imminent and the driver doesn't react to warnings. The cutting-edge multimedia system is internet compatible if teamed with a smartphone, while especially clever is
the Pre-Entry Climate Control system that can be controlled via the internet. And we hardly need add that perceived quality – inside and out – is precisely what you'd expect from Mercedes: stellar. The company is justly proud that this car is built in South Africa – at the same plant that in May 2015 celebrated a record milestone of one-million vehicles produced. “With a total investment of around R100-million in our Mercedes-Benz East London plant, the Hybrid project comprised of more than 500 new purchase parts, of which 200 were local, including significant changes to the bumpers and wiring harnesses,” says Florian Seidler, Co-CEO MercedesBenz South Africa and Executive Director Mercedes-Benz Cars. “This investment further demonstrates the company’s commitment to the advancement of technology and skills development in the country.” As with all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, the C350 e comes standard with a brilliant six-year/100 000km PremiumDrive maintenance plan, while there's also a tempting list of optional extras to choose from.

Auris amazing When it comes to classy hatchbacks, the Toyota Auris takes some rivalling...
Q
uality. Dependability. Reliability. These are all core Toyota values – and they're precisely what the Auris embodies. But wait! There's more! As those infomercials go. In addition to these vital QDR attributes, the Auris has raked in acclaim for being stylish and sophisticated, refined and robust. It is,
52 |
in short, one of the most effortlessly classy hatchbacks on our roads, which is pretty much what you'd expect from a car based on the Corolla – with the Corolla itself having grown from a fairly utilitarian conveyance to a decidedly sophisticated one over the decades. The Auris's heartbeat comes courtesy of a normally aspirated
1.6-litre petrol engine packing VVTi (Variable Valve Timing intelligent), with 97kW and 160Nm on tap. It's a rev-happy motor that feels unburstable and near-indestructible. The Xi model that we've just spent an enjoyable week with, for instance, packs a slick six-speed gearbox and turns in a brisk zero-to-100km/h time
of 10 seconds, topping out at 200km/h. Fuel consumption is pegged at just 6.2 litres per 100km, and on the move this machine sports a decidedly energetic, engaging, extroverted personality. Just as – if not more so – appealing a proposition is the supremely comfortable, high-quality interior. The multi-function steering wheel, for one, is a tactile delight, and gives the driver full command of the
audio and multi-information display systems and integrated Bluetooth functionality. The multi-information display, in turn, includes on-board computer readouts, relaying vehicle vitals to the driver. Great little touches abound. Among them a leather gear knob and chrome detailing around the instrument cluster, while the dashboard fascia features a high-tech “carbon tread-plate” motif, which separates the contrast-stitched “leather” upper from the spacious lower glove compartment. Bottle and cupholders abound, of course, and in-car entertainment is taken care of by
means of a large centrally-mounted screen with cool blue illumination. This provides users with the option of choosing between radio, CD, USB and Bluetooth media sources. All of which further delighted us during our sevenday tenure with the Xi model. The blue illumination theme is carried throughout the interior, while safety-wise the Auris comes complete with driver, passenger and side airbags, as well as the likes of ABS, BAS and ABD. Also standard is an Isofix seat anchor system, which is pretty much what you'd expect from a car of this calibre. On the move, the Auris is enviably silent and unobtrusive, and the perfect tool for everything from daily commuting to long-distance trips. It's also almost unbelievably easy and undemanding to drive, while wind noise and NVH
| 53
is well taken care of, lending this hatch excellent, enviable sophistication. Yet as calming and balming as the Auris is in all conceivable applications, it also strikes an excellent balance between comfort and sportiness. Indeed it certainly isn't averse to being driven with gusto through twisties – should the urge take you. All of which is, at least partly, thanks to the McPherson strut configuration up front, and a well-tuned torsion beam design in the rear. Styling-wise, this machine is exceptionally well-proportioned and... well... classy... with a sloping bonnet line that terminates in a prominent chrome “brow”. This in turn elegantly integrates the sharp headlamp design, incorporating projector technology, with a large Toyota ellipse in the centre, while at the rear, the lamps feature a striking bi-tone design with clear indicator elements and distinctive dual-edged light guides. As a result, the Auris looks especially cool at night, while the whole package is rather nicely accentuated by 16-inch “turbine-inspired” alloy wheels. And yes, as with its Corolla stablemate, the Auris will happily seat five adults. What's more, the traditional hatchback
profile means this machine enjoys excellent packaging mated to the efficient use of space. Just one thoughtful, clever touch of the sort you'd expect from Toyota is a capacious luggage compartment with shopping hooks conveniently placed on either side to secure items. A low loading sill, meanwhile, makes packing the boot a cinch. Toyota itself literally took the words out of our mouths by saying, “In a world where opulence, indulgence and extravagance seem to have become the new norm – the Auris Xi is a solid, yet utterly capable vehicle rooted in the foundation of Toyota Quality, Dependability and Reliability. Offering a well-balanced package, with all of the ‘key’ features one requires, Auris proves that simple can be charming – and what’s more – fun, stylish transport needn’t break the bank.” Exactly. And a standard five-year/ 90 000km service plan, and a threeyear/100 000km warranty only adds to the allure of the package. So, too, does the fact that including the Xi model, the Auris range spans some half-a-dozen variants stretching from well-equipped and competent to downright sybaritic. Another great machine, Toyota!

10 seriously cool things to do in central Durban this summer So you’re heading to Durbs for the holidays and all you’re thinking about are those golden beaches, the deliciously warm Indian Ocean and balmy evenings that are just perfect for sublime cocktails and moonlit walks… but as the infomercials say, there’s more! Durban offers a heap of seriously cool things to do during the summer months – which some would (correctly) point out, is virtually for 12 months of the year. Here’s my TOP 10 cool things to do in the city, says Tessa Buhrmann, journalist and photographer www.experienceluxury.travel
Sleep on a yacht For a completely different accommodation experience be sure to check out Yacht Numzaan (available through AirBnB). This eight-sleeper yacht offers the romance of sleeping ‘on’ the water, of waking up to spectacular sunrises – albeit really early (4:30 am) during the summer months, and having the flexibility of coming and going as you please. A bonus is the temporary membership to the iconic Royal Natal Yacht Club (established in 1858 and the oldest in Africa) allowing you club privileges – restaurant, bar, swimming pool and ablution facilities should things become a little ‘challenging’ on board.

Enjoy cocktails and jazz at The Chairman Located on the somewhat infamous Mahatma Gandhi St. (previously known as Point Rd), this hip and trendy jazz lounge could have you thinking you had dropped into Bourbon Street in New Orleans. A project of a forward thinking architectural firm, The Chairman has literally risen out of a ramshackle old building, repurposed rather than rebuilt and decorated in an eclectic style that is both quirky and creative. The mellow sounds of jazz, extensive cocktail menu and light meals are perfect for a leisurely evening with friends – but for the real action, plan to stay well into the night as the live music only starts at 11pm!
Walk, run or cycle on the promenade at sunrise Get that sleepy head up early and enjoy the sights and sounds of the promenade at sunrise. Fishermen pull in their nets as the sun turns the ocean into liquid gold, surfers run with intent into the waves and flocks of pigeons look for scraps on the beach. As the sun rises the promenade comes to life… lovers walk hand-in-hand, kids run exuberantly ahead of their parents, some cycle leisurely and others with more intent. End the morning with a cappuccino, fresh juice and breakfast on the beach at Circus Circus.
Get your adventure on at Moses Mabhida Stadium The Moses Mabhida Stadium has become an iconic landmark on the Durban skyline, not just as the imposing structure that was built for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, but as a place where the adventurous can climb the 500 steps up the arch or take a huge leap into the ‘void’ of the stadium…. Those less inclined to extreme acts of bravery (read ‘me’), can take the skycar to the viewing platform for expansive 360 degree views.

Stroll through the Durban Botanic Gardens and check out the world’s rarest plant Established in 1849, the Durban Botanic Gardens is currently the oldest surviving botanic garden in Africa. Stroll the broad walkways, chill under a palm tree, be enchanted by the fern garden and wowed by the cycad collection. Don’t miss Wood’s cycad (Encephalartos woodii), reputed to be the rarest plant in the world and extinct in the wild. With only male plants left, the only means of propagating is by creating suckers.

Shop Station Drive The Station Drive Precinct is one of the latest urban renewal projects in Durban and is home to a variety of creative spaces. Check out the Morning Trade – a Sunday artisanal market selling everything from fresh produce, fab food and tasty treats to great coffee, craft beer and handcrafted goods. Across the street is The Warehouse, an artsy kind of place with juice bar, tattoo parlour and a variety of cool retail outlets. Further down the street is the design and décor heaven World Travellers and around the corner The Station. This is an eat, shop, eat-some-more, chill kind of place that mustn’t be rushed.
Go local with a Bunny Chow The Bunny Chow is a quintessential Durban meal, said to date back to around the 1940s and originating from Durban’s large Indian community. It is a hollowed out piece of bread filled with curry. For a well-priced, deliciously spicy meal head to the home of Hollywood Bets sports bar in Linze Rd.
Make the most of ‘Gin-o-clock’ time at Distillery031 Also located in Station Drive, Distillery031 is a craft distillery that uses natural ingredients (think local sugar cane and African botanicals), and creates its own mixers – tonic, lemonade and ginger ale. The mint grows in pots on the window ledge and the air carries the fragrance of the latest distillation. Take a tour, enjoy the gourmet street food or just sit back and enjoy a G&T – make the most of the ‘Gin-o-Clock’ special of half-priced drinks for December – Wed to Sat 6–7pm and Sun 2-3pm… check their Facebook page for more details. So head to Durban soonest… if you’re from out of town and need to fly, be sure to check out Cheapflights for your NamibiaDurban experience, and if you’re located in suburban Durban, leave your comfort zone and head into the city.

Disconnect to reconnect with Wilderness Safaris Namibia
In today’s day and age individuals are increasingly looking for destinations where they can get back to the ‘real world’. Where they can disconnect from their frenetic lives and reconnect with nature, their loved ones with themselves. In Afrikaans, the Namibian lingua franca, our word for hospitality is ‘gasvryheid’. Translated literally it means ‘guest freedom’. Welcome to Namibia. A land of vast open landscapes – an abundance of space in which to inhale deeply and reflect on our place in the world. A hearty slice of paradise It is often said that the journey teaches you about the destination. In the case of a visit to Creation Wines, it is literally true. Along the rustic Hemel-en-Aarde Road that meanders its way over the slopes and through the valleys of Babylonstoren Mountain, beauty is the overriding impression. Every afternoon at an appointed time, they would chase the clouds high, high up to the peak of a nearby mountain and set them dancing and swirling, churning and whirling in a spectacle too wondrous to describe’. According to JC it is thanks to this amazing ‘thermal vortex’ – a fanlike cooling effect off the Babylonstoren Mountain − that Creation’s vineyards thrive on the slopes below, slowly ripening their fruit to flavourful, wellbalanced perfection. Creation clearly lives up to its evocative name. Constant innovation has positioned it among the Cape’s

Creation has gained the reputation as a must-visit for wine and food lovers! And it’s easy to see why as this winery offers more than three types of wine and food pairings on a daily basis, seven days a week. No wonder this estate has won the Klink Award for the best wine and food pairing on a wine estate no less than three times. In addition, Creation has also been awarded the coveted award, “Most Innovative” wine estate in South Africa by the Great Wine Capitals of the World, an unmatched three times in the last four years.

trendsetting wineries while a steady flow of prestigious awards has elevated it high up among the star performers. And this includes its proud reputation as a tourist destination. The estate has played a leading role in the field of wine and food pairing for which it has won the KLINK Wine Tourism Award for Best Food and Wine Pairing on a Wine Farm three times. At the moment, Creation’s menu offers no less than eight thrilling pairing options while the team is also experimenting with wine and herb and wine and flower pairing! Among the other attractions are the amazing flora and fauna, the exquisite fynbos garden, the fine art and informative vineyard and cellar tours, to mention but a few. So, whenever you find yourself in the land of Heaven and Earth, don’t hesitate to aim for Creation where a welcoming Tasting Room with spectacular views The Creation tasting room is situated at the foot of the majestic Babylon’storen peak. The Creation Wine & Taps pairing is a must-tick on any wine and/or food lover’s bucket list. Creation wines are exceptionally food-friendly and the well-trained staff share their knowledge as they take you on a gastronomic discovery. Creation also offers a paradoxical chocolate and wine pairing as well as an innovative brunch pairing.

Chris offers all guests a tour of the area in his 4x4, pointing out hiking paths, walks, spots where you’re likely to have the best bird and animal sightings and sharing his vast knowledge of the surrounding nature. He animatedly regales guests with folklore, the history of the area and, if you’re lucky, he’ll show you some of the amazing images of the wildlife of Akasha that he’s managed to capture on camera. Other outdoor activities include guided hikes, horse encounters (if they don’t stop by the house), mountain biking, farm-dam fishing for children, stargazing, and meditation. Massages can also be arranged on the premises for those who’d like to take their relaxation to the next level. The living area has large windows throughout, beautifully framing the towering

This is where you come to recover, to meditate, to write a book or to just enjoy time with family and friends with no interruptions. While there are shops in the nearby town, it’s best to arrive at Akasha with all that you’ll need during your stay, because once you settle in, it’s unlikely that you’ll want to venture too far. Chris and Elana are also extremely accommodating, and happy to pick up an item or two for you in town during their errands or will arrange for somebody to whip up a meal for you if you so wish. The best way to dine, however, is al fresco, especially in the evenings when the sky is lit up with stars and the silence is deafening. With no TV or other modern-day distractions, the idea at Akasha is to just ‘chill’, in every sense of the word. It wasn’t until I visited the place myself that I really understood why it is called a retreat. Blissful. www.akasharetreat.co.za

How to keep an open bottle of wine fresh? Well, some people use a rubber cork, while others use a vacuum pump. Elliot Cohen has designed an automatic wine preserver to pump the air out of an opened bottle of wine; it works by preventing oxidation that can degrade the flavour and bouquet of the wine. All you need to do is insert this device into an opened bottle of wine, secure the preserver, and then the vacuum will remove the excess air automatically. In this way, your wine will stay fresh between glasses. It is important for Elliot to feature this device in an aesthetic way and with that in mind, he designed the wine preserver with a merlot-tinted base that subtly highlights the vacuum stopper.

Mitigating risk in a Money Market Fund Financial advisers should take care in selecting an appropriate fund
M
oney market and enhanced cash funds are good vehicles for parking cash because they aim to maximise income yield without placing the capital invested at undue risk. However, that’s not to say that these investment vehicles are completely risk-free, says Farzana Bayat, Head of Cash and Income Management at Prescient Investment Management. “In terms of mitigating the four main sources of risk in a money market fund, if the fund is a unit trust, the liquidity and spread risk is controlled by the Collective Investment Schemes Control Act (Cisca). These regulations impose stringent limitations that restrict the maximum fund duration to 90 days, the maximum average term to 120 days and maximum investment term to 13 months. A more flexible enhanced cash fund would have wider limitations.” Ms Bayat adds that these funds are also generally valued relative to the market curve and can incur unrealised mark to market gains and losses as the interest rate curve shifts. In this case, duration, liquidity and spread risk would have to be carefully managed by the asset manager. Where duration risk is concerned, the duration of a fund is an indicator of the sensitivity of the fund to interest rate moves. The longer the duration of a cash fund, the larger the potential unrealised capital impact for any change in interest rates. On liquidity risk, Ms Bayat points out that investors in money market funds have a preference for the asset class due to the high liquidity that it offers. “Treasury bills, SARB debentures and short-dated bank paper offer high

Farzana Bayat : Executive Director Head of Cash and Income Management Farzana has been with Prescient for over 10 years and is responsible for all Money market and Income portfolios. She also oversees the credit research process at Prescient. Farzana completed her Business Science degree majoring in Actuarial Science (with Honours in Quantitative Finance) at the University of Cape Town. She then joined Old Mutual Investment Group (SA) (OMIGSA) Performance Research Team where she was responsible for analysing performance figures for various funds. She joined Prescient Investment Management in July 2003 to specialise in money market instruments and their derivatives. She completed her CFA and is currently managing the money market funds at Prescient.
liquidity, while longer-dated assets, lowrated or unrated corporate, securitisations and bank fixed deposits have much lower liquidity, but offer higher yields. “The key is to balance the search for yield with liquidity. Money market funds can hold an allocation to higher yielding illiquid credits, but they need to invest a sufficient amount in liquid assets to facilitate cash flows without incurring losses”. The desire by cash funds that fall outside of the money market category to lift yields sees them bring in longer-dated floating rate deposits. While the duration of these assets is essentially that of a three-month asset, they also have significant embedded risk, known as spread risk. In managing cash funds, Prescient tempers its investment in long-dated floating rate notes, which can mean lower income yields, but also much less risk. A desire to optimise yield has also seen some money market funds increase their allocation to credit. “A money market fund should never lose capital, and by chasing marginal increases in yield by investing lower down the credit spectrum, one increases the risk of capital loss in the fund. “The regulations do not impose credit limits based on credit ratings on the investments in money market funds, which can invest in assets with ratings below investment grade, or in unrated credits. These credit risks decisions are left to the fund manager, making this the biggest risk in money market funds. The key is to balance yield with credit quality,” says Ms Bayat.

Baggage Guidelines
At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.
Our rules pertaining to baggage include the following We offer our passengers a generous free hand baggage allowance, with maximum weight of 10kg each, and maximum size 55 x 38 x 20 cm; plus an overcoat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a ladies hand bag, a reasonable amount of reading material, and a laptop. We also allow a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches as hand baggage.
