The N/a’an ku sê Foundation was founded in 2006 with two aims – to protect and conserve Namibia’s vulnerable wildlife and to improve the lives of the marginalised San community. Marlize van Vuuren and her husband, Dr. Rudie van Vuuren, together with a small dedicated team, started this conservation initiative that has grown into several award-winning projects.

Creating sustainable and long-term solutions in Namibia by playing an active role in nature conservation is important to N/a’an ku sê. They believe in the country’s rich heritage, and even though they can’t undo what is done, their passion for the people and the land is helping to shape Namibia’s future. This vision reached a wider audience with their first internationally successful TV series, Wildlife Orphans, which was aired on DSTV’s Discovery channel and was truly a World-Class programme. Now, a year later, N/a’an ku sê has filmed a second series called Wild Jobs Namibia. This programme not only focuses on the conservation work they’re doing, it also aims to inspire others to get involved in their own communities. You can register online by visiting our website: www.airnamibia.com.na, or at any Air Namibia ticket office. You will receive a membership pack, including your permanent card, 2-3 weeks after your first flight after registration.

An Electronic Bonus of 300 miles will be allocated to the member on first activity if the member has registered online and selected his communication preference to be e-mail.

Miles Expiry

Miles are valid for five (5) years after the year in which they were earned. Miles due to expire will always be reflected on your Mileage Summary.

If your Miles are not credited for any reason, they can be promptly credited provided the relevant documentation is submitted. Baggage Guidelines

At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.

Our rules pertaining to baggage include the following We offer our passengers a generous free hand baggage allowance, with maximum weight of 10kg each, and maximum size 55 x 38 x 20 cm; plus an overcoat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a ladies hand bag, a reasonable amount of reading material, and a laptop. We also allow a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches as hand baggage.

HELENA BRANDT ARTIST AND TEACHER

Fine Art Gallery in Swakopmund recently hosted an intriguing exhibition of work by Namibian-raised artist Helena Brandt – in collaboration with Chris Snyman - called ‘Bipolar Dreams’

elena Brandt was born in Pretoria in South Africa, part of a large family of six children. Her family moved to Grootfontein, a small town in Namibia, when she was just ﬁve years old.

Helena learned to love and live with nature from a very young age: “My father was the chief geologist at a British mining company, and responsible for explorations and geological maps of Damaraland and Kaokoland. Every December school holidays, we’d join him and his team in big trucks on his expeditions into these harsh but incredibly

beautiful and rugged parts of the Namib desert.” She smiles, “Our father was the eternal scientist searching for solutions in creation.” Her mother, however, was a farmer: “She bought a small farm from the local German doctor at Gobis Water. We first lived in tents in the thickets of the bush, close to a fountain, where wild animals were in abundance. Eventually a small house was built, and my mother began cattle farming.” And art? “As a little girl, I used to take home school chalk and draw pictures on the green water tanks. I collected the leftover Indian ink from my father’s drawing tables, and painted images on my clothes. I washed the linen map paper and made clothes. I clearly remember my first art teacher was a German lady, and I won my first art prize in Primary school with a picture of Flamingos.” Helena and her siblings loved farm life and working the cattle in the winter months when they returned from boarding school. She was at Stellenbosch for her high school years, and remembers loathing the art classes. But on the flip side, “My mother taught us to make our own clothes.” Helena’s parents encouraged her to study art, and she qualified with a Diploma of Fine Arts, majoring in both Sculpture and Graphics, from the prestigious Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town. She considers her most sound and solid influence to be the late Professor Lippy Lipschitz at Michaelis, but latterly, her late husband, John Auffrey, and now, her children Rahl, Wynand and Francoise. If you ask Helena about the inspiration behind her work, she says, “Nature, the geological formations, the mountains, dunes, forests and jungles of Africa and the sea, the sensitive colours of the Namib, the greens and blues of the sea, the multitude of textures and

forms in creation; the human form, and the versatility of cultures. My work is my deep inner awareness of many moons ago, or just the last full moon. There is so much beauty around us of which we are not aware, as we are bombarded in the media with conﬂict, war and no peace. “ Helena has been involved in art education her entire life – locally and internationally - and is proud of the many young children and adults whose eyes she opened to see the world they live in, in a different way: “I lived in Namibia for the major period of my life, but recently spent over four years in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where I had a teaching studio. I’ve now returned to Namibia.” Helena has exhibited extensively across the globe, and has worked in private collections internationally. Two years ago, she had a solo exhibition at The Fine Art Gallery in Swakopmund - Tina von Wentzel at the Gallery describes her as: “a very versatile artist who, before she set off to explore new horizons, contributed signiﬁcantly to the Namibian art scene for over 30 years; not only as an excellent and remarkable artist but also by opening the magic world of art to countless children - she presented art workshops in the north-east communities of Namibia. As an art educator, she motivated many of our contemporary artists and others. Helena Brandt is regarded as the co-founder of art movements in our country.” This exhibition in Swakopmund is to be a combined one with talented artist, Chris Snyman: “We decided on ‘Bipolar Dreams’ as the title for this exhibition. As creative individuals, we all have our highs and lows; this experience consequents amazing results, with many questions asked by the onlooker,” says Helena. “I have been working on the “Kraal series” as well as the “Rock series”, and will exhibit works from this as well as work done in Thailand and Darling in South Africa.” Most of the work is mixed media done on handmade mulberry paper; a bronze study, ‘Gatvol’, and work from her ‘Doll series’.

Helena Brandt lives in a tent on the banks of the Khan River on the edge of the Namib Desert: “The total peace and serenity is a blessing with springbuck, guinea fowls and birds as companions. Where my creative journey will take me next only the spirits of the ancestors will know.” Her dream? “That the Namibian art fraternity would extend the horizons for the young artists of such a peaceful and beautiful country.” | 23

eidi von Hase lived on Farm Jena, in the south of Namibia, and her neighbours were the women from the next village of Hoachanas. Heidi has a strong background in fine arts and a love of textiles, so when she saw the dire need for job creation, she began working with the local women to build up a business. That was 1987. Like all projects, it began small, but gradually, word spread about the beautiful hand embroidery, and Casa Anin was born. In those early days, Heidi - together with the ladies - developed all the designs. Today, Casa Anin’s Anabel Loubser - a trained textile designer – has taken on the designer role. The concept behind Casa Anin is based on the embroidery skills of the women in Hoachanas, who originally learned it from the missionaries. The skill has been passed down from generation to generation. On the other side of the business, Heidi has trained seamstresses to work in the manufacturing atelier. Today, Casa Anin produces hand and machine-embroidered bed linen and tableware from the finest quality percale and other locally sourced fabrics. The brand caters for the hospitality industry as well as supplying their own retail shop. Step inside, and you will find a collection of largely local products ranging from | 31

bed linen, German bedding, tableware and cotton sleepwear, to accessories such as Namibian body products, handmade jewellery and scarves. Casa Anin is in the process of setting up an online shop this year to increase global accessibility to their bed linen and other goods: “We’re also planning to introduce a range of printed fabrics inspired by our beautiful country of Namibia,” says Anabel. Building a business based on partly existing skills, partly on a transfer of skills, has been immensely satisfying, and as Anabel says, “In good times, this project has provided for about 100 ladies. Currently we’re working with around 25. In every business, there are challenges, but the passion for textiles and hand embroidery and being able to create jobs has stayed!” Just like all fads and fashions, different items are popular at different times: “In the early days, our handembroidered pillow cases ﬂew off the shelves – they were the right product at the right time. Our bedlinen, too, has also taken off, and we have a substantial repeat business clientele. After spending 6 hours on Bird Island off Lambert’s Bay photographing the Cape gannet colony, I found myself analysing how I’d chosen to capture the essence of these birds.

It was only when reviewing my images from the trip, trying to choose the “shots” that captured the moments, that I recognised my fascination with the gannet’s eyes: their piercing blue-eyed stare as they glide effortlessly past the camera; their ability to reconnect with their mate from a distance, among hundreds of other birds, as they prepare to land back among the colony. I was clearly focused on the eyes! The gannets are consummate ﬁshermen, and equally consummate ﬂyers and divers…but on land, they appear clumsy, almost comical. That’s how they earned themselves the Afrikaans nickname of Malgas, translated as ‘mad goose’.

Bird Island lies about 100m off the shore of Lambert’s Bay, on the Cape’s West Coast. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to see the Cape gannet ‘up close and personal’! It’s one of only six sites worldwide where Cape gannets breed, and it is the only breeding site easily accessible to the public. The island, which is almost 3 hectares in size, is connected to the mainland via a breakwater. It is an important breeding and roosting site for seabirds, particularly the gannets and cormorants. In the background, Cape fur seals can be seen sunning themselves on the island’s rocks. In the island’s well-situated gannet lookout, visitors get a priceless opportunity to witness their unique mating dances.

The bird hide is signposted with interesting information about these fascinating seabirds and their habits. Facilities The lookout provides an excellent vantage point for visitors to study the island’s gannets. There are signs everywhere, providing background information on the West Coast’s birds. IN THE SHADOW OF A LIZARD

Namibia is home to four girdled lizards found nowhere else in the world. Students and staff at the Polytechnic of Namibia are not only endeavouring to ďŹ nd out more, but to share these ďŹ ndings

long the skyline of the capital of Namibia, Windhoek, lives a rare and endemic lizard – the Herero girdled lizard. This lizard is restricted to the Auas and nearby surrounding mountains, making it one of the smallest geographic ranges of any lizard in Namibia, and arguably one of the smallest in the world. As amazing as this sounds, almost nothing is known about this species in the wild, but professors and students at the Polytechnic of Namibia are trying to change that. Dr Jill S. Heaton, and Drs. David Joubert and Jim Juvik of the departments of GeoSpatial Sciences and Technology and Nature Conservation, respectively, are working with undergraduate and post-graduate students to better understand the habitat, natural history, genetics, population size, and temperature preferences of the Herero, and also the Jordan’s girdled lizards. Besides the Herero, there are three other girdled lizards found nowhere else in the world but Namibia – Jordan’s, Campbell’s, and Namaqua girdled lizards. Girdled lizards are small to medium sized, viviparous (giving live birth instead of laying

eggs) lizards, generally restricted to rocky habitat with just the right size and shape of crevice. They are well adapted to their rockdwelling lifestyle – their spiny, thick and hard plate scales protect them against the rough rock, and they are dorso-ventrally flattened so they can easily slip into thin rock crevices. Common strategies for lizards to protect themselves against predators include camouflage or speed – they either hope the predator can not see them, or that they can outrun it. In contrast, rock dwelling girdled lizards never venture very far from their crevice, and at the first signs of threat retreat immediately, wedge their heads tightly into a corner pressing themselves against the roof and floor using their limbs and back, and fold their spiny tail back over their body. Namibia is famous for its wildlife, rich cultural history, spectacular geography, and its strong conservation ethic. What few people realise however is that it is rich in reptile diversity, with 286 species presently known to occur in Namibia. So, as you watch the sunset from your lodge outside Windhoek, sundowner in hand, or catch the rising sun as you venture forth for an early morning game drive, look up to the mountains and wonder at the fact that you are looking at the entire range of the Herero girdled lizard, a species that is found nowhere else in the world but Namibia.

aunina is the idealistic dream of a self-professed crazy South African, Tracey Chiappini-Young, and a passionate BrazilianAmerican, Karen Jansen, who met in the hallowed halls of the London School of Economics, and deliberated on how they could make a difference in the world and empower courageous women from disadvantaged communities by elevating the status of their handcraft to art. Capetonian born-and-bred, Tracey spent 13 years immersed in the world of ﬁnance, managing mutual and private equity funds. Karen, born of mixed Brazilian and German parentage, spent 10 years working around the world as a management consultant to US-headquartered multinationals. Tracey takes up the story, “My personal journey started when I was working in asset management and had a pre-thirty crisis, which culminated in my writing a national series of How2Help books advising professionals on how to support social enterprises. While writing these books I came across hundreds of wonderful creative endeavours in South Africa. All of them were characterised by the same challenges: an inability to scale, an inability to charge the appropriate price point as a result of average quality and no brand recognition, no access route to market. Africa has a rich heritage of traditional artistries, and exceptional craftsmanship and hand-skill. “My business partner, Karen, is a Brazilian-American and has been confronted with massive inequality and poverty within Brazil throughout her life.” So, with over 30 years combined experience in international business, Tracey and Karen’s intention was to grow Taunina into the Faberge of teddy bears and improving lives while doing so. Tracy describes herself as a crazy, passionate Italian-Irish-South African who believes anything is possible: “I never take no for an answer. I am determined to share the story of these incredible African women and their exceptional talent.” The Taunina Atelier opened its doors in September 2011 and they spent the next 24 months training and up| 67

skilling its embroidery artists. Tracey recalls, “News of Taunina’s ‘birth’ was shared among family and friends, and on the day the atelier’s doors were due to open, ten qualified seamstresses arrived to welcome us. No adverts. No press releases. Just a typical African fireside tale story, shared between friends. “We invested a significant amount of time and effort in up-skilling and refining the finishing skills of our seamstresses. We did extensive upfront training before selecting our lead embroiderers.” Tracey is still involved in absolutely every aspect of the business, from training, to design, to quality. We quizzed her about the past, present and future of these wonderful Taunina bears: When did you decide to create an upmarket brand? Taunina is about realising a dream: Karen and my dream of making a difference and empowering women, who despite being the bastions of their communities, are so often disempowered and unrecognised: Our artists’ dreams of finding fulfilling employment and financial independence; our customers dream of being part of a groundswell to make a difference through their purchase and buy one-of-a-kind handcrafted pieces that have a soul and a personal story to tell. Luxury, in its purest form, is also about realising a dream. From the outset, we were 100 per cent focused on building a socially

conscious luxury brand with the Taunina bear and their creators at its core. The Faberge of Bears with a Dalai Lama mission! If you wish to empower artisans and pay them wages that enable them to send their children to school and buy homes, there is absolutely no alternative to a luxury positioning. Handmade items take time to create. Hand-embroidered items take days to design and create. The cost of producing a handembroidered Taunina bear is extraordinary because of our social mandate. Each Taunina bear takes 5 to 7 days to complete from design to ﬁnished product. If an embroiderer is paid a salary of between SAR5000 and SAR6000 a month, this alone translates into an embroidery cost of around SAR1500 per bear. How does the ﬁnancial aspect work with the seamstresses? All of our artists are employed full time in our Cape Town atelier, earning between R4500 and R6500 per month, depending on their productivity. What materials and skills are used to make a Taunina Bear? Each Taunina bear is fashioned out of iconic heritage fabrics from Liberty of London, William Morris, Bakers and the like. Collaboration collections are crafted out of bespoke silks and silk velvets from Taunina Collaboration partners, such as

New & Lingwood and Patrick Mavros. What makes each soft toy unique and distinctively African? Each creation is one of a kind, inspired, designed and hand-embroidered by a single Taunina artist. Each one is a canvas onto which the artist ‘paints’ its masterpiece. Embroidery is an age-old African artistry, a skill which has been passed down from generation to generation. The rare beauty of each piece lies in the opportunity it affords a woman in need to use her traditional artistry to achieve income security and, most importantly, earn the respect and admiration of discerning Taunina customers around the world. Wine Estate

n the magnificent Helderberg valley where the scenery can take ones breath away, is a small boutique wine estate that does exactly that. Peter Falke wine estate is a gem in the heart of the Helderberg wine valley that screams of art, beauty and quality. With the majestic Helderberg behind and a bird’s eye view of False Bay in front, one cannot help to take a second deep breath. This valley has impressed me for a long time, not only due to the dramatic views, but also the quality of the wines. Generally the soils of Helderberg are rich in nutrients. They comprise of shale soils with broken granite up on the hills. Peter Falke is in the prime region within the valley, in my opinion. This is due to the area where underground water funnels down the slope and brings rich nutrients along, creating lush growth. In summer the renowned south-easter wind keeps the leaf canopy open and clean from pests that normally thrive in humid conditions. These strong winds also bring in cool air from the ocean, cooling down the grapes that hang proudly on these picturesque slopes. In the winter the bountiful rain accumulates against the mountain and helps the vineyard replenish the reserves for the long African summer ahead. Peter Falke is situated in one of the many mesoclimates that do really well with Red grapes, in particular the so-called Bordeaux cultivars. The first impression of Peter Falke wine estate is the incredible attention to the finest little detail. From the entrance 72 |

to the cellar there is several “awe” moments. The tranquil environment has similar effects as a day at the spa. The gardens remind me of European grandeur with every flower in exactly the right place. The combination of the different aromas is very refreshing and contributes to the whole experience. The old Cape Dutch manor house stands out like an old Elephant bull on the Savannah. The garden is truly inviting and I can sit there for hours on end, merely enjoying the African sun. As sublime as the gardens might be, nothing prepared me for the artistic splendour of the building inside. The contrast in colour, design and originality is mind blowing. From the entrance to the tasting premises to the chandelier in the barrel cellar, the word “wow” comes to mind. The layout has its own charm with a laidback country life atmosphere. Yet there is an astonishing amount of detail put into the interior design of the estate. You feel almost guilty of leaving and possibly offending the host. The deep red against the raw oak is very dramatic and you have to take a moment to take it all in. The interior is a rich experience of colour contrast and creativity. The wines reflect this terroir to great extent. Tasting through the wines, the terroir is very expressive with lots of Red berries that are known for this particular region. Furthermore the wines have good solid structure that will age well into the future. I am impressed with the elegance and feel of the wines. The wines are a true expression of the soils and a great find.

Ruby Blend 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz General The intensity of this wine can be almost surprising, as there is an explosion of flavours that overwhelm the taste buds. With two strong cultivars it is often difficult to blend without one overpowering the other, but this is not the case. The wine reflects both cultivars with good result. The ruby of the name is a great description of the colour. This is a really good food wine that is worth aging for up to eight years or more. Nose of the wine The aroma of Cinnamon and fruitcake is quite apparent with Cherry and Mulberry completing the fusion. Once decanted there is some truffle aromas that show the complexity of the wine . This combination makes for an inviting prospect. The sipping test As would be expected from the cultivars in the blend, there are loads of aromatic flavours filling the pallet. At first there is a beefy, oxtail and leathery taste to the wine. As the wine opens up the Liquorice and black currant dominates the pallet. This is so important for the blend to evolve. The wine has a decent acidity that gives nice structure it. What to eat ….. With the aromatic nature of the wine, it could be a good pairing for a large variety of dishes. My personal choice would be Lamb shank as the Liquorice will bring an amazing flavour to the dish. One can be bold when pairing this wine as it will go down well with steak, curry or even Eisbein.

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon General This is one of my favourite cultivars and therefore I am normally very critical of the style. However, this wine has simply impressed my socks off. The wine kept evolving in the glass and that is a great indicator of its potential to age well. As a winemaker I am aware of just how difficult it is to make Cabernet Sauvignon as it is normally the last grapes to come in to the cellar. Often the fermentation can be tricky. The colour is sublime and the really dark hue of the wine is telling me about the nice small berries that were picked. Nose of the wine This wine shouts Carpaccio and wet Biltong up front. As it evolves there is truffle and autumn leave aromas filling the glass. The wine shows lots of veggie characters like green beans and spinach. The sipping test Blackcurrant attacks the tongue at first, which is very refreshing. Herbal aromas fill the mid pallet and over time curry components become noticeable. As the wine oxidises in the glass, sweet berry flavours become overwhelming. The wine has a well rounded pallet with the Tannins well balanced. What to eat ….. The structure of the wine makes it a great pairing with a healthy portion of beef. What happens is that the beef juices and the herbal character of the wine will create a slightly spicy aroma. This wine with curry could be very exciting. For the sweet tooth, it could be a great partner to a bitter Chocolate or mouse. | 73

So let us disclose a well-kept Namibian secret to you.

Your board has resolved to invest in Namibia. Well done, you have shown not only courage, but also foresight and some raw common sense, because this is the place to be in Africa. And sure, your merger or acquisition will have its normal pitfalls and challenges – all of which can be overcome, because you have done it before. But there is one thing that unrelentingly eats at your ulcer and its “that” thing. Admit it, you have a certain budget line item that wasn’t there when you did the acquisition in Stockholm last month. How is it indicated? “PCC” (Project Consultancy Costs), or maybe “NA” (nützliche Aufwendungen) – neither of which are novel. But naming the line item was the easy part. The difﬁcult part is, who do you make this payment to, to ensure that it has the maximum effect of “lubricating” your deal. And evenly challenging is, of course, how much? Certainly you don’t want to pay too little, because you want results but hey, you certainly don’t want to pay too much – because this whole thing causes you pain anyway because you know for sure it’s illegal (even in Africa)… and it’s not every day that you participate in anything so edgy that it could land you in jail – and not just any jail – an AFRICAN jail. You’ve heard these are institutions that offer truly life changing experiences.

How’s that? Simple. There are many people in Namibia who are quite happy to play the “African till” and take from you as much as they can and promise you the world – which they might well achieve. But, lo and behold, nothing more than what you would have achieved had you not paid a cent and simply followed the (fairly sophisticated) legal routes offered by this jurisdiction. This knowledge is kept secret by those who beneﬁt from it - and they vehemently argue against any claims of the kind that we make herein. Why? CARPOOL: Complicated system of transportation where Mom always winds up going the furthest with the biggest bunch of kids who have had the most sugar. ICE: Cubes of frozen water which would be found in small plastic tray if kids or husbands ever filled the darn things instead of putting them back in the freezer empty. INSIDE: That place that will suddenly look attractive to kids once Mom has spent a minimum of half an hour getting them ready to go outside. “I SAID SO”: Reason enough, according to Mom JACKPOT: When all the kids stay at friends’ homes for the night. JEANS: Which, according to kids, are appropriate for just about any occasion, including church and funerals. “JEEEEEEEEZ!”: Slang for “Gee Mom, isn’t there anything else you can do to embarrass me in front of my friends?” JOY RIDE: Going somewhere without the kids. JUNK: Things belonging to Dad. KETCHUP: The sea of tomato-based goop kids use to drown the dish that Mom spent hours cooking and years perfecting to get the seasoning just right. KISS: Mom medicine. OPEN: The position of children’s mouths when they eat in front of company. OVERSTUFFED RECLINER: Mom’s nickname for Dad. PANIC: What a mother goes through when the wind-up swing stops. PENITENTIARY: Where children who don’t eat their vegetables or clean their rooms eventually end up, according to Mom. PETS: Small, furry creatures which follow kids home so Mom will have someone else to clean up after. PIANO: A large, expensive musical instrument which, after thousands of dollars worth of lessons and c o n s t a n t harping by Mom, kids will refuse to play in front of company. TWO BMW WINNERS IN THE

DESIGN TROPHY 2015

wo BMW models have won over voters with their exceptional design in the readers’ survey conducted by German motoring magazine Auto Zeitung. The design of the elegantly sporty BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe took the honours in the “Sedans / Station wagons / Vans” category, while the extrovert use of forms embodied by the BMW 2 Series Convertible won the day in the compact class. Elsewhere, the MINI 5-door, the BMW M3/M4

and the BMW X6 ranked among the top three most aesthetically pleasing models in the small car, sports car and SUV class respectively. To decide the winners of the Design Trophy 2015, the editors invited readers of Auto Zeitung and users of www. autozeitung.de to vote for the newly launched cars they felt represented the best design. More than 22,000 readers responded to the call to vote. The winners and runners-up in ﬁve categories were determined by the numbers of votes cast. The outstanding quality of BMW Group design has earned a continuous stream of praise from the Auto Zeitung readership over recent years. SHIMMERING MIRAGE Right from its launch last year, I liked the peppy, perky little Mitsubishi Mirage with its wieldy dimensions and thrummy 1.2-litre three-cylinder motor – which makes 57kW and 100Nm of torque at 4 000rpm. Enough to scarper this pint-sized hatch at a brisk pace while sipping a mere 4.9 litres of petrol per 100km. Now the Mirage package – which is billed as Mitsubishi’s ﬁrst ever supermini – has been enhanced with Bluetooth connectivity on the GLS and GLX models. This also allows for synchronisation of the latest hits straight from a Bluetooth-enabled phone. And as we all know, music on the move is one of life’s great delights. It also so happens that the Cherokee is a quantum leap over previous Jeeps, what with its ﬁve-star Euro NCAP rating, brilliant nine-speed automatic transmission, lashings of high-tech, great build quality – and formidable off-road ability in the case of four-wheel-drive versions. And now having just spent a week with yet another Cherokee variant – notably the entry-level 2.4-litre Longitude version – my admiration for this all-American icon has been raised yet another notch. Indeed, while I’m lucky enough to drive a vast range of new vehicles, this is one that I would buy with my own money. Yours from R500 990.

OPEL EXPANSION Opel is on the march – and means business, as we have seen with the recent launch of new models such as the Mokka and the Adam. And if you need

MOTORING proof of that, witness but the fact that in Europe, for one, sales are soaring. In fact, they increased by about 8 500 units in the ﬁrst three months of 2015, with some 279 306 new registrations over this period. That’s a sales increase of 3.1 percent. And not very surprisingly, the likeable compact Mokka SUV leads its segment in countries such as Italy and Germany. Clearly those Europeans are on to a good thing...

BENZ BAKKIE A Mercedes-Benz bakkie? Yup! Nissan and Daimler are to jointly develop a mid-sized pickup that will share some of the underpinnings of the latest Nissan NP300. But it will be engineered and designed by Daimler, and the Benz bakkie will be pitched at markets in Europe, Australia, Latin America – and South Africa. Expect production to start by the end of this decade.

AUDI-LICIOUS The new third-generation Audi TT Coupe was expected to stun – and it did not disappoint. It has metamorphosised magnificently from the car that was first introduced in our part of the world in 2000, and is yet more refined and elegant than ever, while it is also more of a pure sports machine.

Just one major drawcard is the Audi Virtual cockpit as it is dubbed – which is essentially a fully digital instrument cluster. I just spent a week with the 2.0 TFSI in front-wheel-drive guise – there is also a quattro version available. And engage it did, with 169kW and 370Nm of torque on tap from its force-fed two-litre mill. Enough to surge it from rest to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds and on to a top trot of 250km/h. Prices start at R558 000.

POWER RANGER The Ford Ranger has done formidably well on our market

MOTORING – and justly so. Now there is an all-new Ranger in the ofﬁng. It promises to be simply superb and will pack high-tech features such as Adaptive Cruise Control and a Driver Impairment Monitor, as well as upgraded diesel powertrains. Levels of comfort and reﬁnement will also be enhanced, and styling is sleek, slick and cutting-edge. But it will remain one of the most capable trucks in its class. Expect it to be launched in our part of the word in the fourth quarter of 2015, with pricing still to be announced.

MORE GOLF ANYONE? The much-loved VW Golf range has just been expanded – with the addition of the all-new Golf SV (or Sportsvan as it is known in Europe). It is the second body variant of the current seventh-generation Golf but is longer, wider, and higher than its existing hatchback sibling. Which makes it roomier and more practical. But it packs all the tech and tiptop build quality of the hatchback, with prices stretching from R292 500 to R359 200.

MENACING MERC Right. I have decided after a week with Mercedes’ CLS 350 BlueTec that there are few if any production cars more sublimely sinister than this machine. Especially when ﬁnished in black, as was my test car. Mercedes, as you might know, bills the CLS as a four-door coupe and in the latter half of last year it was comprehensively revised, making it yet more desirable and tech-laden. Powering the big Benz that I tooled around in is a three-litre, V6 turbodiesel powerplant making 190kW and 620Nm of torque, and running through a nine-speed gearbox. For even more muscle, however, you can look to the range-topping CLS 63 AMG S at R1 600 000. The CLS 350 BlueTec, meanwhile, weighs in at R893 000 – before you start dipping into the long and tempting options list.

t the 85th Geneva Motor Show, Suzuki Motor Corporation unveils two world-premiere concept models, the iK-2 and the iM-4. New environmental technologies from Suzuki featured in the two models will also be introduced. These are a new-generation platform; the BOOSTERJET, a new downsized direct-injection turbo petrol engine; and the SHVS mild hybrid system.

The result is Fujin “God of The Wind” Marimba; it’s a conceptual music instrument designed for 2 performers where they can combine and multiply their energy. Since there are no constraints related to production or commercialization, the designer has come up with a really unique and creative design. The seating of these performers might remind you of the image of a 2-seater motorcycle.

You can turn any display into a full working computer with Asus Chromebit. It’s a small dongle that plugs into any HDMI port and transforms the display into a computer with Chrome OS. This idea could be the start of our future computer. Since many companies have started to launch products with a similar concept, this time, Google decided to join the market with Chromebit.

2015 IndyCar Series Aero Kits Honda launched the 2015 IndyCar Series Aero Kits which will be used in the 2015 Verison IndyCar Series. Produced by Honda Performance Development, these aero kits come with almost 200 individual pieces that can be ﬁtted onto existing Honda powered Dallara Indy car chassis. The manufacturer aims to add to the already amazing list of accomplishments in American open-wheel racing. All parts have carefully been designed and developed to make sure Honda’s six IndyCar Series teams are completely armed to achieve optimum performance at each of 15 circuits that make up the 2015 championship schedule.

Spydero Dog Tag Folding Knife

Take a look at the Samsung Dream Doghouse. Perhaps this company wants to reach another market after their success in the human market, after smart TVs, smart phones, smart devices, now smart housea for dogs. Besides being a comfortable and luxurious house, it also features an exercise treadmill to keep your dog ﬁt even on rainy days. The automated feeder allows your dog to feed itself when you are away, all they need is to press the button and food will be dispensed to the feeding bowl. It is even equipped with Samsung tablets where they get to see dog shows or when you need to make a video call to check that your dog is okay.

Spyderco has come up with Spyderco Dog Tag Folding Knife. It’s a pocket knife that features a chisel-ground CPM S30V blade with titanium handle. If you know Spyderco knives, then you would know this model is a departure from its typical folding knife; the handle is constructed from solid titanium that accurately replicates the size and shape of a military dog tag. The centre of the handle scale is machined in order to create an integral spring bar that houses a steel bar bearing from the blade’s detent mechanism. At the top of the handle, there’s an aluminium back strap that controls the blade’s movement; both the open and closed positions, giving user protection from the edge when it is closed.

The brief was to come up with a redesigned option of something related to the health care industry that would improve the service. This is how ArgoDesign imagines ﬂying ambulances of the future. Every second is crucial in an emergency situation. Based on research, there are more than 1000 saveable lives lost per year due to slow emergency response in bigger cities. This concept one-passenger drone can eliminate the problem in jammed urban environments; it saves time by reaching the location faster.

Paul Smith has the chance to re-decorate one of the world’s most recognizable cars, the version of 4×4 Land Rover Defender. Utilizing a palette of 27 individual colours, Paul Smith has magically created a vibrant and unique version of the Defender that represents these cars’ impeccable service history with the Army, Navy, and Airforce. All these colours can be tied to the connection of a Defender to the British countryside; it’s been a symbol and ambassador for the past sixty years. The combination of deep, rich colours makes this car special. These colours and designs work together to create the feeling of luxury.
