employee benefits
Do you have a gap? ...chances are that you do. Most people are unaware of their retirement and insurance gap. Only one in nine Namibians save for retirement in the form of a pension or provident fund. 88% will need help from the government or their family. Almost 5% of our nation is disabled. More than half not being able to find a job. FundsAtWork can assist you, as a business owner, to help your employees to close their retirement and insurance gaps. The tooth fairy won’t.

Dear Esteemed Passengers, It remains an honour and privilege to welcome you on board and share Air Namibia’s story through this publication. We remain committed to provide exceptional customer service to our passengers. We are proud to inform our esteemed stakeholders that we have increased capacity on our Windhoek – Gaborone – Durban route. Effective 26 March 2017, Air Namibia now services this route with the Airbus A319 fleet which offers 112 seats, replacing the Embraer ERJ 135 which only offered 37 seats. We believe this development will help accelerate the growth rate of this newly introduced route, while offering our customers more options including business class seats and opportunities to transport cargo. Air Namibia introduced special group fares for Namibian learners who

travel to other countries for sports and tours. The special fares apply when travelling in a group of 10 persons or more. This annual initiative will offer an opportunity for learners to experience fast, safe and reliable transport while reducing traffic on public roads. On the Namibian calendar, May is a month filled with various important public holidays that honour and celebrates events of significance to our history. Namibian workers will join the rest of the world to commemorate May Day, better known as the International Workers Day on 1 May 2017. Three days thereafter on 4 May, the nation will
“
observe the Cassinga Day, a public holiday to honour the fallen heroes whose blood waters our freedom. The Africa Day is observed on 25 May annually, to celebrate African unity and commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as African Union which was established 54 years ago. On the local front and in our quest to promote domestic tourism, we take a focus on the Namibia Wildlife Resort (NWR) Halali camp this month. Strategically located halfway between Okaukuejo and Namutoni, Halali is situated at the base of a dolomite hill, amongst shady Mopane trees and just a 3 hour drive from the Ondangwa Airport.
Thank you for flying Air Namibia, we look forward to welcoming you on board again soon.

If you’re heading south along the KZN coast, consider The Gorge Private Game Lodge & Spa with its five-star panoramic views, sensational gourmet table, game drives, birding (over 255 species found in the Gorge)…and their Clivia Spa with views from here to eternity. Their spa menu is extensive, and the natural setting adds to the healing power of the spa treatments. And heading north, there’s The Oyster Box Hotel, part of the Red Carnation Hotel collection - its five star spa was voted Best Hotel Spa at last year’s World Spa Awards, and is probably best known

for its Turkish Hammam. It’s the perfect uber lux escape if you’re staying at this iconic Umhlanga beachfront hotel. And there are so many more. Some of the Midlands and coastal hotels and little boutique hotels like the gem-like Teremok in Umhlanga have glorious spas, each with their own character. At most of KwazuluNatal’s magnificent game reserves and lodges up and down the coast – and inland – various size spas have been added to the mix. There’s something utterly wonderful about a massage on the deck of your tented camp, overlooking a river, waterhole or just simply the bush. When you choose your getaway – in the wilds, country or coast - ask whether they offer spa treatments, or check it out on their website.

U
nderwater Photographer of the Year is an annual competition that seeks to celebrate photography beneath the surface of the sea, lakes, rivers and even swimming pools. Today’s competition has 10 categories, with themes such as Macro, Wide Angle, Behaviour and Wreck photography, as well as three categories for photos taken specifically in British waters. This year’s judges were experienced underwater photographers Peter Rowlands, Martin Edge and Alex Mustard. French diver Gabriel Barathieu was named Underwater Photographer of the Year 2017, and his ‘Dancing Octopus’ photo was taken in the lagoon of the tiny island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean: “I had to wait for a low spring tide when the water was just 30cm deep (1 foot) so that the octopus would fill the water column. I got as close as possible with a wide angle lens to create this image, which makes the octopus look huge.” “Both balletic and malevolent, this image shows an octopus that really means business as it hunts. The way it moves is so different from any predator on land, this truly could be an alien from another world,” commented competition judge, Alex Mustard. “It was taken in knee deep water, showing that underwater photography is open to anyone who is prepared to dip their toe in the water.” The title of British Underwater Photographer of the Year 2017 went to Nick Blake, who lives in Dublin, Ireland, for his photo ‘Out Of The Blue’ taken in a freshwater sinkhole in Mexico, known as Chac Mool Cenote: “Underwater photographers can move freely in three dimensions, so I adjusted my position in the water to capture the symmetrical framing of the light beams by the rocks”. Competition judge Martin Edge commented “I love the enclosure of the light within the Cenote, the composition contains all the sunlight so that the eye of the viewer cannot escape.” The Underwater Photographer of the Year competition also aims to promote new photographic talent. Argentinian Horacio Martinez was named as Up &
Coming Underwater Photographer of the Year 2017 for ‘Oceanic In The Sky’ photographed in Egypt: “I noticed this oceanic white tip shark patrolling in the distance and exposed for the sun beams, and was pleased by the dreamlike effect. Oceanics are great subjects for close ups as they are anything but shy. Yet, I wanted to capture their apparent loneliness in the big blue.” Chair of the judges, Peter Rowlands commented “The photographer has seen the light and realised its dramatic effect extremely well and used it to contrast the small shark in a lonely world. Very evocative indeed.” The title of Most Promising British Underwater Photographer, 2017 goes to Nicholai Georgiou for ‘Orca Pod’ taken in the depths of winter in northern Norway: “The days are short and the water barely above freezing, but with orca around, the cold is quickly forgotten. The light was beautiful as the sun skimmed the horizon, but the water was dark and foreboding. Then these orca swam by, nice and close. It was a moment which will be hard to top.” Chair of the judges, Peter Rowlands summed it up neatly by commenting “I’m jealous.” Melvin Redeker from the Netherlands won British Waters wide angle with the first photo of orca (killer whales) taken in Shetland in the UK: “We studied the Mousa pod over a few weeks and decided the best opportunity would come if I hid on the seabed where the orcas were hunting seals. Staring in a wall of water, suddenly the pod appeared. Totally silent. Eye to eye with these mighty apex predators, my heart skipped a few beats.” Chair of the judges, Peter Rowlands commended “this is a groundbreaking shot for British waters.” Contact: info@underwater photographeroftheyear.com

Finger of God
The imposing ‘Finger of God’ remains a landmark in the memory of most Namibians, even though it tumbled to the ground more than twenty years ago . . . By Ron Swilling
Photo: Walter Rusch

The 450-ton, 12-metre-high sandstone rock feature was difficult to ignore. It rose above the arid landscape of Asab in southern Namibia, balanced precariously on a narrow shale pedestal only 1.5 metres wide, looking as if it was defying gravity. Until it collapsed in 1988, the Finger of God was a popular tourist attraction.

eternity. Eventually, in December 1988, the last stones of the pedestal gave way and it tumbled down to the ground. There were no witnesses, only the vast landscape and deep blue sky. Since then, several stories surfaced, including one that the supremacy of the white man would end when this geological structure fell, and one from the extreme right that God was showing his disapproval. The legends were, in all probability, embroidered as the country neared its independence in 1990. Geologists have determined that rather than giving any apocalyptic signs, Mukorob merely collapsed under its own weight after millions of years of erosion, a shudder from the Earth and a final rainstorm. This story is brought to you by the Gondwana Collection Namibia – ‘Have a story to tell’ The rock feature has been replaced on the tourist route by another more robust ‘Finger Rock’ – Vingerklip, between Khorixas and Outjo, formed by thick layers of calcrete rock rather than sandstone. And, although it needs another few million years to gain the presence and power of the precariously-balanced Mukorob, visitors are able to walk up to its base where they can safely gaze at the formidable surroundings and ponder on its ancient origins. Somewhere in the minds of many, however, the image of the former ‘Finger of God’ rock pinnacle remains a symbol of the long-enduring power of the Earth and a geological icon of Namibia.
Visitors can walk up to the base of Vingerklip for a grand view of the Ugab Terraces and the surrounding landscape.

Audi Q7 Audi is setting new standards with the second generation of the Audi Q7.
T
he large SUV is teeming with innovative solutions in all aspects of its technology – from its lightweight design, drive system and chassis to its infotainment and assistance systems. Its spacious interior is highly configurable and offers luxury-class levels of comfort.
Design and body The new Audi Q7 has a confident road stance. The sculpted Singleframe grill dominates the front with the daytime running lights forming a distinctive double-arrow pattern in the headlight unit. The trunk lid with standard LED tail lights wraps around the solid, upright D pillars. Inlays with the quattro logo in the door trim strips structure the lower part of the vehicle sides. The add-on parts embody a new concept of colours and materials.

The new Audi Q7 has shed as much as 325 kilograms compared with the previous model, depending on the engine. Thanks to Audi’s strict adherence to the principle of lightweight design, the curb weight of the base version is kept under two metric tons (without driver). 71 kilograms was saved in the body alone, which incorporates many aluminum parts in keeping with its innovative multi-material construction principle.
Drive system The 3.0 TDI with 200 kW accelerates the five-seater Q7 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.3 seconds (6.5 seconds
for the seven-seater). When equipped with five seats, the car’s combined fuel consumption is only 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers with emissions of 149 grams of CO2 per kilometer – 23 percent less than the previous model. The Amarok V6, 3 litre, the Phoenix has landed Since it was first introduced back in 2011, the Volkswagen Amarok has enjoyed a wide gamut of reputations. Often spurned for the transfer-case-free automatic gearbox and low capacity two-litre engine, it has also picked up quite a few very impressive awards along the way as capable and competent 4WD working vehicle.
V
olkswagen’s introduction to this growing segment was always going to be a rocky road. This part of new car sales is the most lucrative and growing, but the flip-side is that it’s also the most competitive. The Volkswagen Amarok V6 tops out this segment for power and torque. Volkswagen executives will tell you, although a bit strained, sometimes, that on paper the 2 litre, four-cylinder diesel engine matches and indeed outpaces many larger competitors. Now, Volkswagen has a potent (a VERY potent) antidote to the two-litre blues: and it comes in at 90 degrees. It’s a V6 turbodiesel engine, originally used in products such as Audi and Porsche SUVs, as well as many other fire breathing thoroughbreds. The four-cylinder engine is a fine motor, no doubt. It’s got power you wouldn’t think an engine of that size would have, and it’s also quite efficient and well-behaved at the same time.
Engine Well, “It’s all about the engine,” you say? Volkswagen’s marketing manager Nick
Reid said. “It’s the engine that the car always deserved”. And he’s not wrong. While the 2 litre motor will still form the majority of the Amarok range, and do a sterling job to boot, the massive impact that a gutsy V6 monster can have on one’s life enjoyment in general is indelible. The Volkswagen Amarok V6 engine kicks out 165kW and 550Nm. The Volkswagen 3 litre V6 tdi, has been adapted quite heavily for use in a real 4WD. For the Amarok, the sump was redesigned quite a lot: aluminium was cast aside for a bigger and stronger mild steel for the sump case itself, for strength and better oil performance (lubrications and cooling). This three-litre diesel V6 is all about power, and it does lead the segment by a wide margin: 165 kW of power, available between 2,500 and 4,500rpm. And there is oodles of torque, as well: 550Nm, from a lowly 1,500rpm, all the way to 2,500rpm. To drive the V6 Amarok is, in many ways, a very pleasant experience. This V6 is smoother than silk. And it’s quiet, too. The interior is up to the standard of any high-end sedan. It’s deathly, eerlily quiet, sometimes.
Gearbox The gearbox does a spectacular job whilst pretending that it doesn’t exist. Unless you’re under heavy throttle settings, gear changes are almost unnoticeable. And when they are, they are seductively smooth and sharp. The V6 Amarok comes with a 8-speed automatic, with a six-speed manual option coming soon.
Interior The interior of the V6 Amarok has been updated too. A sharp, easy to use and intuitive infotainment system sits frontand-centre, giving one plenty of control from the divers and passenger seats. This interior is all about quiet, luxurious comfortable efficiency. The V6 Amarok is undoubtedly a driver’s car. The cabin is impressively quiet, adding to the overall car-like experience of driving this Amarok. Hard acceleration on this V6 Amarok is a lesson in sheer efficiency: the revs rise quickly, and gears are dispensed of without fuss. She will leap out of the blocks to 100km/h in just 7.9 seconds. Braking is equally effective: it does it all very quickly, without a whisper of anguish. Do visit Autohaus Windhoek soon. This we can guarantee: It will be time very well spent!

Do business travel like a boss 10 Tips From The Pros Flying in the sharp end, staying at swanky hotels and seeing new destinations – there are perks to jetting off for business. But it’s not all fun and adventure: just ask any red-eyed, jet-lagged executive who is expected to step into a different time zone and straight into the boardroom. Fortunately, we have a few insider tricks to smooth your journey and help you keep up with today’s “always-on” world of business while on the road. By: Melany Bendix 74 |

TIPP #1 | The “5 Stages of Travel” The Mental Model of a Traveler Consumer Everyone in the travel business is always looking for that competitive edge. At rainmaker, we believe the key to operating an efficient and effective marketing strategy for a hotel, lodge or guesthouse lies in a precise understanding of consumer or the potential traveler’s mental

model. The 5 Stages of Travel. Let’s have a brief look at what they are. 1. Dreaming Approximately 70% of all travelers are inspired through internet moments. Their next journey or destination is the direct result of online influence. 2. Planning Around 80% of holiday-makers use the internet as their main
Planning
information source for planning their travels, leaving only 20% who rely on more old-fashioned methods 3. Booking Close to 60% of people book through the internet. In fact they also compare your reviews and prices with those of your competitors before booking. Most people are savvy consumers. 4. Experience Over 60% use smart-phones or tablets during their journey. They are usually well informed about what is in your locality, such as
Planning
restaurants and attractions. And they require Free-Wifi in all areas to share their experience. 5. Sharing More than 50% share their experiences while they are travelling - with friends and family through WhatsApp, Facebook and similar apps, or on public platforms such as Tripadvisor. That means half of your visitors are influencing your reputation while they are still with you. By doing so, they create new and more importantly, TRUSTED content for other potential
Booking
travellers, to start dreaming staying with you or on your destination. These 5 Stages of Travel - Dreaming, Planning, Booking, Experiencing and Sharing - are the foundational basis of our holistically designed digital marketing strategy. While we tailor bespoke strategies for each of our clients, these five steps are at the centre of what we do. They are a thread that runs through all of our activities.

Trending: Craft distillers
Benchmarking for spirited craft distillers When the majority of privately owned micro distillers were declared illegal in South Africa in the 60’s, only a few large distilleries were granted the right to produce spirits under law. Sadly, most of the existing artisanal skills disappeared with the stills which became curiosities or museum pieces. When legislation was relaxed again in 2003, it meant private distillers had to start from scratch: re-kindling their forgotten distilling skills was only a part of it. Finding somewhere to buy the necessary materials and hardware was another challenge altogether.
Enter Gert Bosman, founder of the South African Craft Distillers Institute.

The Michelangelo is an international wine and spirits competition which was established in South Africa 21 years ago. The entries are judged annually by a top international panel of 28 Masters of Wine, wine makers and wine buyers, sommeliers and wine writers whose brief it is to identify South African and international wines and spirits according to global standards and market preferences. Only approximately one third of all entries are awarded Platinum, Grand’Or (double gold), gold and silver medals or trophies, which makes these awards sought-after and highly coveted. In 2016 a total of 1829 entries were
received,
making
the
Michelangelo South Africa’s largest wine and spirits competition.
To reinforce its commitment and at the same time encourage craft distillers to enter the competition in July, SACDI has introduced four Michelangelo trophies which will be awarded to the best craft distilled gin, rum and vodka, as well as the overall most innovative craft spirits.
So... what is a craft spirits producer? “In a nutshell,” says Gert, “a craft spirit producer produces end-products containing no more than 100 000L absolute alcohol per annum. More than 50% has to be distilled from selffermented raw material, except in gin, which is often re-distilled from neutral no

therein also the distilled sum of their passion, their knowledge and their art.”
No saturation in sight as demand grows In 2014 it was predicted that the craft distillers market would reach saturation in South Africa around 2028, says Gert. However, the demand for true craft spirits is surpassing predictions and demand is growing much faster than anticipated: “we see new craft spirits labels almost monthly”. He feels deeply passionate about these “spirited” individuals and says, “the decision to sponsor Michelangelo trophies for craft spirits, is aimed at acknowledging the abilities and talents of true craft distillers. Highhumour Mae West was a delightfully notorious character who first came to prominence during the Roaring Twenties. Always willing to challenge public attitudes, Mae West had some of the most outrageous quotes in history. Here are a few classics:
“I used to be Snow White, but I drifted.” “Save a boyfriend for a rainy day and another, in case it doesn’t rain.” “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”
“Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before.” “When I’m good, I’m very good. But when I’m bad I’m better.” “Cultivate your curves - they may be dangerous but they won’t be avoided.”
“I never worry about diets. The only carrots that interest me are the number you get in a diamond.” “It is better to be looked over than overlooked.” “A woman in love can’t be reasonable or she probably wouldn’t be in love.”

Multi Asset income funds a good alternative to money market to boost investors buying power I
nvestors in traditional money market investment vehicles have not generated returns in excess of inflation over the past 5 years and have therefore lost buying power due to inflation eroding their investment returns. Multi Asset income funds are a good alternative to money market funds as they offer low capital volatility and higher levels of income together with sufficient liquidity. At Prescient, our Income mandates aim to outperform cash and inflation and to not deliver negative returns over a rolling 3 month period. Generating real returns and continuously compounding these returns over time is a key objective. To achieve these objectives for our clients, our fixed interest fund managers invest in a combination of high-quality, income generating instruments including the money market, bonds, inflationlinked bonds, property, preference shares, derivatives and offshore assets - switching between the different asset classes as they offer value. Risk management is crucial for an investment mandate that targets to
outperform inflation consistently over any 12 month period. We would only invest in assets that would potentially outperform inflation, and we perform a complete risk analysis before we include any asset in the portfolio. Risk for us is defined as not meeting the client’s risk and performance objectives. We aim to reduce the downside risk as much as possible but at the same time participate in as much upside as possible. Since inception, investors in the Prescient Income type mandates have consistently delivered returns in excess of inflation - thus boosting their buying power. The South African repo rate has gone up 200bps over the past 3 years and coupled with this bank funding spreads and credit spreads have increased. In this environment one can earn inflation beating returns on good quality assets and investors don’t have to look down the credit spectrum to earn good real returns at the moment. Currently, the Income Fund sector is a really attractive sector to invest in as you can earn yields of 9-10%

(same yield as bonds) but without the duration or interest rate risk because you are largely invested in shorter dated assets. The income fund sector is delivering inflation beating returns with a risk profile not much higher than cash. Investors looking to park their cash for income should look at this sector as opposed to the traditional money market sector.

tendency for women to be neglected, because their risk of heart failure only increases after menopause. Among people younger than 40, the most common cause of heart failure is cocaine abuse. ‘I had a patient last week, aged 41, who ostensibly blacked out at a party. It transpired that he’d taken cocaine,’ says Lipkin. The act of snorting cocaine narrows the blood vessels, causing spasm in the arteries. If blood flow is blocked off for a few seconds, the user might be ok, he explains, but if the arteries hold the spasm, the result is a heart attack. There has been a lot of debate about whether stress really causes heart disease. Research has linked heart attacks to volcanic eruptions and

these
incidences were rare. It often boils down to personality type. ‘Most people can’t change the habits of a lifetime. If working is stressful, can you afford to stop? Working hard may be less stressful than not working hard,’ says Lipkin. If a change in diet is recommended this is relatively easy to deal with by switching to a more Mediterranean style to

chest pain, palpitation, high blood pressure, breathlessness, dizzy attacks. He also conducts cardiovascular risk assessment and peri-operative cardiac assessment and treats patients with elevated cholesterol levels.

/AI-/AIS HOTSPRINGS SPA RESORT TO UNDERGO RENOVATIONS We have resolved to renovate our /Ai-/Ais Hotsprings Spa resort, which is located 706 KM south of Windhoek, from mid-March up until 31 July 2017. This decision was taken due to long-standing maintenance challenges which we believe stand in our way towards customer satisfaction. We should be fully operational as of 1 August 2017. The planned renovations will entail the temporal closure of some of the rooms and buildings to ensure the safety of guests who will still be staying there. The restaurant, family bush chalets, and campsites will remain open due to demand from clients that intend to undertake the Fish River Canyon Hike. It is a wellknown fact that this resort has always been a popu-
lar destination for adventure enthusiasts and families who simply want to break away from the busy city life. Mrs. Zelna Hengari, our Managing Director, is very excited at the prospect of renewing some of the infrastructure at the resort though saddened at the impact the renovations will have on the guest experience. “It is with a heavy heart that we must proceed with the renovations and would thus want to apologize in advance to those guests that will still be visiting the resort during this period. It’s undeniable that this resort is one of our most popular resorts in southern Namibia. Our guests have continuously kept us abreast with some of the things they would like improved upon to enhance their experience at the resort. Based upon this, we will renovate the resort with the aim of exceeding their expectations. I, therefore, implore our guests to be patient with us during this period, says Mrs. Hengari.
OVER 600 NEW DOMESTIC TRAVELERS SIGN UP FOR NAMLEISURE CARDS During the month of February, we ran a promotion aimed at encouraging domestic travelers to sign up for a Namleisure card at 50% of the cost. The aim of the promotion was to encourage domestic travelers to acquire a Namleisure card which entitles them to 50% discount whenever they visit any of our facilities including Sun Karros Daan Viljoen.
Mrs. Anna Onen, NWR’s Sales and Reservations Manager
The Namleisure card comes in three variations to cater to different travelers. There is the single’s card, which is aimed at individuals, while the Namleisure Plus is aimed at couples, which seems to be the most popular one while
the Namleisure Family is aimed at two adults and two children between the ages of 13 – 17 years old. As it currently stands, there are over 4000 Namleisure card members. For us, these figures are very encouraging as this is testimony to the value that our domestic market is placing in exploring their country. Mrs. Anna Onen, our Sales and Reservations Manager said, “based upon the positive response we received from different sections of society, it was very encouraging to see that traveling is no longer seen as an exclusive recreation for a selected few but that different people from all walks of life see the value in exploring their country. It is, therefore, important that once one gets the card, they should try and make use of it before it is up for renewal.
Here is a preview of what you can look forward to when you visit our Hobas Camp. We have added 6 rooms, a swimming pool, and a restaurant.

Baggage Guidelines
At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.
Our rules pertaining to baggage include the following We offer our passengers a generous free hand baggage allowance, with maximum weight of 10kg each, and maximum size 55 x 38 x 20 cm; plus an overcoat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a ladies hand bag, a reasonable amount of reading material, and a laptop. We also allow a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches as hand baggage.

We partner with employers to enhance the lives of their most valuable assets: Their employees So, when employers asked us: Do you know how to help my employees provide for their families when they are no longer able to, and do you know how to give them peace of mind and financial freedom? We answered by: creating insurance solutions that are simple, affordable and relevant to their needs. Because when you’re asked to change a reality, you cannot answer with theory or opinion. You take your knowledge and you put it to work. And that is the advantage we offer, every day.
