“How do we improve lives through sustainable innovation?” “With a bank that believes in the power of our natural resources.” Co-financer of US$50 million package Hardap Solar Power Production Plant To us, sustainability is not a buzzword, it’s an essential element of our financial commitment to creating a better Namibia. It’s for this reason we have co-financed a US$50 million package to assist Alten Africa in building one of the largest solar power plants in Sub-Saharan Africa. The new plant will be situated in the Hardap region and, once operational, will meet the annual electricity needs of over 70,000 Namibians who currently go without power. This is what motivates our efforts as we continue to finance renewable energy initiatives that enable Namibia’s growth, and improve the lives of its people.

Safari From A Higher Vantage Point Ingeborg Hernes owns Okapuka Horse Safaris in Namibia, and has been running these unique safaris since 2001. Okapuka is a malaria-free private game reserve of about 10,000 hectares, with riding rights throughout the neighbouring farms which makes the total area 30,000 hectares Edited by Anne Schauffer Photographs by Okapuka Horse Safaris

O

kapuka Horse Safaris is owned by Ingeborg Hernes, and she, together with her two grooms Venantius and Jeremie, breed and ride purebred Arabian horses. Ingeborg was a child when she fell in love with Arabians, and promised herself that one day, she’d be the proud owner of such a gorgeous creature. “I came to Namibia almost 20 years ago on a holiday and fell in love with the country,” she says. “One of the lodges on the way back to Windhoek offered horse riding. So, I checked in there and booked a few hours of riding…and that is the start of an even deeper love affair with this amazing country.” Obviously, holidays come to an end and being back in Europe set Ingeborg thinking: “Why not have your own horse safari business?’. I did research on demand/availability in southern Africa, quit my job, began a short apprenticeship at one of the best horse vets in The Netherlands, and a short course on conformation (and a lot more) of the Arabian horse.” Ingeborg began negotiations with the farm to set up her safari business, bought a few Arabian horses and was ready to go. Today she owns 28 stunning Arabian horses, and guests at Okapuka say there’s nothing to beat the extraordinary combination of great lodge, fabulous cuisine, up-close-and-personal game viewing… and the amazing horse riding and vantage point from which to enjoy wildlife and the environment. Okapuka Horse Safaris is situated on Okapuka game reserve in the high central plateau, about 30 minutes’ drive north of Windhoek. It is considered one of the best stocked private game reserves in Namibia. Ingeborg explained the difference between a horseback safari and any other: “Compared to a 4x4 safari, we not only get closer to wildlife, but we feel part of nature.” A smile, “We’re in nature on nature, if you know what I mean. What better feeling than cantering alongside a herd of giraffe or zebra? Or having an adrenaline rush when being unexpectedly charged by rhino? Riding a horse in the bush is adventure!” To guarantee a personal experience, group size is limited to a maximum of 6 riders led by an experienced guide.

How far do you travel each day? “As we offer a stationary programme, the aim is to see and enjoy as much wildlife as possible, so we don’t do long distances. I would say on average we ‘travel’ about 25km per day. Having said that, it doesn’t mean we’re a slow program, since we do love our long trots and canters. It’s just not a Formula 1 in the bush.” Where do you eat, or is it round a camp fire? Who cooks? What do you cook? (She laughed loudly) “You don’t want me having to cook for you! Definitely not my strongest point. I leave that to the professionals.” The Lodge restaurant specialises in game dishes based on Namibian and European cuisine, and the wine list is extensive, boasting top quality South African wines. The dining and bar area overlook the lawn and waterhole. This drinking spot is frequented during the late afternoons and evenings by many different species of game. “So, all meals are taken at the lodge (a la carte) except for the day(s) when there’s a light picnic somewhere in the bush. For our Endurance program, we eat (set menu) at the venue on the days we’re there. On our Mountain Trail, the cooking is done by the lodge where we stay when in the mountains. For all our rides, we can cater for dietary requirements, however, it may be a bit difficult when at the Endurance scene.”

Flamingo asked Ingeborg to describe a typical horse safari, and she said, of course, that each itinerary differs depending on what type of program chosen: “Because our stables are situated at our lodge, all rides start and end here. Our standard program is a stationary program where we return to the lodge every day; for our Endurance program and Mountain Trail program we leave for 2 or 3 nights.” Where do you stay overnight? You will either spend all or the majority of the nights at the Okapuka lodge, depending on which program you choose. If you opt for a week-long safari, you spend all nights at the lodge (stationary program). If you choose the Mountain Trail, 5 nights at the lodge and 2 nights at a lodge in the mountains; for the endurance competition, we spend 2 or 3 nights somewhere comfortable at the endurance venue, and the other nights at the lodge. The Lodge consists of thatched Park Rooms overlooking the riverbed of the Otjihavera, or with a view over the savannah. The rooms are spacious and have en-suite bathrooms (shower, toilet and wash basin), safe, coffee and tea making facilities, mini-bar, fan, telephone and a terrace.

Where are the horses kept? When we spend our nights at the lodge, the horses are stabled in a big stable where they spend a comfortable night. At the endurance venue, they either stay in stables or in kraals, and during the Mountain Trail, they stay in a camp. Do people usually come alone, or in groups? Normally riders come in twos or more, but it is certainly not unusual for riders to travel on their own. The majority of our riders come from Europe, although the number of riders from the Far East travelling to Namibia is on the increase. Can I bring a non-horse riding partner? Is there anything for them to do? Oh yes, the Lodge has two swimming pools, plus a tennis court. There are game, sunset and mountain drives, plus hiking trails, so non-riders can enjoy a very good Namibian holiday.

S

teering your own boat through Africa’s mighty rivers is a concept that would previously have been material for dreams or Hollywood movies, or perhaps excursions reserved for explorers of the past. Today, it has slipped from the world of dreams into reality with Expedition Zambezi, to become an easy and affordable adventure. Joining the ranks of must-do bucket-list adventures like taking a balloon trip above the Serengeti and climbing Kilimanjaro, it takes the term ‘safari’ (meaning journey in Swahili) and raises it a notch higher to ‘expedition’. And, an African river expedition to boot. There’s exploration to be had. Get ready for your first Zambezi expedition!

All aboard! On the 5-day/4-night expedition on the mighty Zambezi and Chobe rivers, you are the captain of your own boat - or have the option of an on-board guide/helmsman, if you prefer. The adventure begins on the banks of the Zambezi with introductions, a night at the lodge and a detailed briefing before stepping onto your private waterborne home to begin exploring Africa’s great waterways.

he peace of this vast and rich water world immediately envelops you, satiating your senses with luxuriant impressions. Birdsong replaces city noise and merges with the soothing sound of cow bells from the bank, muted laughter from villagers and the gentle splash of a mokoro (dugout canoe) slicing through the water. Vivid colours from the sky and river vegetation reflect on the water in a richly extravagant canvas of beauty. Fish Eagle calls ring through the air, as the birds take off from branches, baring their vast wingspan, and rising into the immense blue sky. The quintessential sound of Africa echoes through the day.

ZAMBIA

ANGOLA

ZIMBABWE BOTSWANA

The rich river realm Your personal guide - in an accompanying boat - ensures a safe and seamless journey as you discover the riches of the river. Your first stop is to visit the Carmine Bee-eater colony, where the exuberance of activity, sound and colour from these seasonal visitors can best be appreciated from the water, as they swoop and dive above their snug nests carefully dug into the riverbank. Lunch is a delicious selection at the stylish Zambezi Mubala Lodge, before continuing to cruise down this large and stately river that seperates the neighbouring countries of Namibia and Zambia. A golden wash colouring the day indicates that it’s time to set up camp on a sandbank, where a fire is lit and a mouthwatering supper prepared. Camaraderie and conversation fill the late afternoon. As the red orb of sun sinks into the horizon, the glittering light from the lanterns twinkles with the stars, until sleep calls and you board the boat to fall asleep in the comfort of your rooftop tent to the sounds of the African night. It doesn’t get much better than this. Magic abounds and enters your life, like a long-awaited friend who has finally arrived. Birdcalls and the freshness of a new day rouse you in the morning for a hearty breakfast enjoyed on the riverbank. There is nowhere on Earth to compete with waking up on the banks of the Zambezi. As a river guide describes the priceless experience from revelling in many calm river dawns: “If you’ve done it once, you never want to wake up anywhere else.”

BOTSWANA

River exploration & an adventure of a lifetime On the river, vibrant waterlilies bob on the water, and cormorants sun themselves on the tops of trees. Catch-and-release fishing enthusiasts can try their hand, whiling away happy hours in the hope of luring a tiger fish, while companions lie back with a favourite book. By afternoon, the Kasai Channel is reached, connecting the Zambezi with the Chobe River. Crocodiles glide past or sun themselves on the banks. The friendly sound of hippos chortling punctuates the night, while during the day pods of hippo cautiously watch your passage, adding a flurry of adrenaline to the day’s adventure.

What dreams are made of . . . Days three and four are filled with additional excitement as you enter the waters that flow past the Chobe National Park. Here, on the floodplains of the Chobe, there are spectacular sightings of elephant and buffalo to be savoured from the safety of the boat, and rarely-seen river-adapted water antelope like sitatunga to be spotted amid the river reeds. The final night arrives too soon, as does the arrival at the Kasane Immigration post the following morning, when it’s time to bid your guide and comfortable water home goodbye and take your transfer to the airport or to continue by road on your journey through Botswana to Vic Falls. It is difficult to leave the river, which has lulled you into a peaceful reverie, soothed your soul and offered some of the most exhilarating wildlife experiences to be had in Africa, as the star of your very own African dream. by Ron Swilling

INVESTMENT

Industry Trends By Monei Pudumo-Roos, Head of Institutional Development and Executive Director at Prescient Investment Management

T

he past has seen an escalation in the debate about the relative merits of active and passive investing in the South African equity market. Domestic and global research show that it is increasingly difficult for active equity managers to outperform passive market indices. For example, data from the S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC show that only 13.5% of South African equity managers outperformed their passive benchmarks over the last five years, while this number is as low as 3.5% globally. If most of the active equity managers underperform passive benchmarks, and given that they generally charge higher fees, it is tempting to conclude that employing a passive strategy should be the preferred solution for most of those looking to invest in the equity market. We have recently seen demand for more passive funds as asset aggregators incorporate, or at least consider, passive solutions in their investment strategies.

There are three reasons why this should be the most logical thing to do; • •

 assive strategies are transparent as the portfolio allocation P is not discretionary. P  assive solutions are inexpensive compared to active investing since there is no need to analyse securities in the index. P  assive solutions are generally tax efficient as infrequent rebalancing is unlikely to trigger huge annual CGT bills for voluntary money.

Despite these undisputable benefits of passive over active investment styles, the major downfall of passives has tended to be overlooked by market professionals. The major weakness of a pure passive approach to investing

INVESTMENT

is that the investor is guaranteed to underperform the benchmark after investment management fees and other transaction costs are considered. Put differently, the return to a passive investor should roughly equal the benchmark return, minus the total investment cost. In our view, both active and passive investment styles have significant drawbacks and deciding on whether to use active or passive funds is largely a matter of belief rather than hard evidence. While Prescient Investment Management finds the passiveactive debate relevant, we believe that there is another avenue that has been overlooked. Acknowledging that the debate between active and passive may never truly be settled, investors should instead sidestep the acrimony and embrace a simple approach that blends both to build a better portfolio. In our experience, combining aspects of both investment styles results in better control of active risk, while significantly reducing total investment costs. Our research suggests that adopting a long-term, strategic framework to blend passive (core) and active (satellite) is more efficient than trying to uncover which style works best. Each investment strategy has its merits and shortcomings (elusive alpha and high management fees for active strategies, and guaranteed underperformance after fees for passive solutions), suggesting that the most robust portfolio should be a combination of both. The allocation between the two will depend on the investor’s risk tolerance and objectives. Although the core plus satellite framework seems to resolve the debate about active and passive, there is another angle where this solution is even more compelling. Let us suppose that for a 1% annual management fee an investor awards an equity mandate to a value manager where the investor has a 3% tracking error constraint around a given benchmark (for example, Capped Swix). Although simplistic, this example encapsulates the main features in actual active investment decisionmaking. Now assume that the value manager has proven skill in selecting good value stocks that generate above market returns. However, given the 3% tracking error constraint, it is unlikely the manager will only bet on his proven skill set, opting instead to make use of an optimiser to construct the final portfolio that loads heavily on his views but that respects the investment policy guideline of the tracking error.

How different is this final portfolio from the benchmark? How much do the portfolio’s holdings differ from the constituents of the benchmark index? When a manager overweighs a stock relative to its weight in the index, there is an active long position. The summation of all the active long positions and the absolute value of the summation of all the active short positions divided by two (to avoid double counting) gives the percentage of active share of a portfolio. Our experience shows that for such a portfolio, the active share component is generally around 25%. Alternatively, the value manager has a portfolio that mimics 75% of the benchmark while holding only 25% of shares that reflects his views. Although the manager was paid an active fee, a sizable portion of his final holding is direct exposure to the benchmark. We believe this to be wasteful and would suggest that an astute investor should separate the core and the satellite elements to achieve a costeffective portfolio while attaining the same tracking error of 3%. The art of combining active and passive therefore lies in the investor’s risk budget, which will inform the allocation between the active and passive investment strategies. In so doing, there is greater transparency between the investor and manager, helping to better manage the investor’s expectations. The point is that the allocation must be managed in a more innovative manner, without taking excessive risk to at least return index performance after investment management fees. The active portion should therefore be allocated to the market risk that the investor intends to gain exposure to. There are a number of well documented and proven risk premia, and there are different equity investment styles such as value, momentum and market beta. This makes it easier for the investor to hold the manager accountable. More importantly, the approach leads to significantly reduced investment management fees at a time when fees are in the spotlight in the industry.

“Our research suggests that adopting a long-term, strategic framework to blend passive and active is more efficient.”

n addition to this remarkable collection of work, each year the judges are asked to do an impossible task - to pick the winners. And while the first place International Landscape Photograph of the Year is breathtaking, to be named International Landscape Photographer of the Year requires more than a single shot. The Photographer of the Year is based on a portfolio of four images representing consistency as well as that spark of landscape brilliance. The organisers of the International Landscape Photographer of the Year are Peter Eastway and David Evans. They’re both keen landscape photographers, so putting this award together gives them great enjoyment. “We wish to celebrate the art and craft of landscape photography!” they say. And they do it by collecting 101 of the best landscape photographs into a book, as well as rewarding the 'best' single photographs, and 'best' portfolios of four photographs. Eastway explains, “So, what is it that drives landscape photographers to pursue their art? For some, the capture of nature at its most wonderful is reward enough. In fact, these are the moments photographers live for and being out in the landscape is often as enjoyable as capturing it with a camera. However, the history of landscape art is much broader than merely creating a record of nature. It is interpretive, imaginative and inspirational. Some photographers take their captures and re-map the tonality;

others take several captures to produce a landscape of the mind. "We believe that all approaches to landscape photography are valid and as you turn the pages of the previous year award books, you will see exponents of many different styles presenting their rare and carefully considered compositions. Some of the landscapes are straight out of camera, others are from the photographer's imagination.” He continues, “The International Landscape Photographer of the Year Award has matured with a look and style that has been guided in part by our judges, and in part by the entrants. There's no doubt that our judges have strongly held views on what makes great photography, but equally we've invited judges who have a broad appreciation of photography. This cornucopia of ideas curates our wonderfully diverse collection of the top 101 landscape photographs, but it also makes choosing the best three photographers and the best three photographs very challenging." "Without in any way diminishing the accolades presented to our major prize winners, I'm sure many of them will be humbled and honoured when they look at the other entries. There are always many other photographs and photographers who are very strong contenders. Much discussion between the judges surrounds the merits of each image and each portfolio, so while the prize winners are justifiably honoured, the real recognition is being published in this book."

IT’S ALL ABOUT BEING IN THE BOOK For Eastway and Evans, there's something magical about the way a book involves the reader, the expectations as you turn each page, the excitement and surprise as you look at amazing photograph after amazing photograph. And for the photographers, seeing your work printed in a real book, is what drives Eastway and Evans to organise and publish the International Landscape Photographer of the Year award. Said Eastway, "Recently I was at a trade show, visiting the Momento Pro stand. Over on one of their tables was a large, A3 book with thick, sumptuous pages open on some of the most amazing landscape photographs I had ever seen. Curious, I walked a little closer, feeling that I recognised the photos - and of course I did! It was the latest version of the 2016 International Landscape Photographer of the Year book as presented to the two major winners, each page perfectly printed with a high-end Epson printer, lovingly hand bound by Momento Pro's own craftspeople. But what really sang to me was the quality of the photos, each enhanced by the quality of ink on paper, something that doesn't translate nearly so well in an online environment." “There’s something wonderful about a book, the weight of its covers, the feel of the paper as you turn the pages, the excitement and surprise as you look at amazing photograph after amazing photograph. We know our previous winners who received a book were really impressed, so this remains our vision: to create a landscape photography publication that is so beautiful, every serious landscape photographer in the world will want to be involved. And with our elite judging panel of established and esteemed judges, the International Landscape Photographer of the Year awards book will have a distinctive authority."

The Judging Scores For Every Entry - Out of 500 Unlike other photography competitions which we’re involved with, entrants to the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards receive a score out of 500. Each judge has 100 points to deliver, so the highest (and we admit, unlikely) score is 500/500. You are able to enter more than one photograph of the same subject, so in this way you can get feedback from the judges as to which version they like the best. To be eligible for the International Landscape Photographer of the Year award – which is based on your top four images - if two or more of the images are too similar, the judges at their discretion may remove one or more of them.

Similarly, we want 101 different landscape photographs in the book, so while entrants are entitled to enter similar images, only one may be selected. So, for an entrant to be certain that his or her landscape photos are published in the book, the entry needs to earn one of the top 101 scores. The prizes for the winning entries: First Prize Cash prize of US $5,000, trophy, an Epson SureColor P800 printer, inclusion and feature in the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards 2017 Book, and a printed copy of the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards 2017 Book. Second Prize Cash prize of US $1,000, trophy, inclusion in the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards 2017 Book, and a printed copy of the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards 2017 Book.

Prestigious Enhancements To Land Cruiser Prado Grand Grade For the first time, a new third grade, called VX-L has been added to the model line-up. The VX-L model combines all the features of the VX whilst adding a power-operated tilt-andslide moonroof and comprehensive active safety assistance package to the mix. More dynamic, modern and robust styling The refreshed Prado features new-look frontal elements such as the bonnet, grille, headlamps, bumper and wings draw on structural elements from the model’s design heritage.

In keeping with Land Cruiser Prado heritage, the grille itself features broad vertical bars with slit-shaped cooling openings, finished in chrome. Ground clearance is 215mm, with 31-degree approach, 25-degree departure and 22-degree ramp break-over angles. The vehicle’s profile is further enhanced by stylish new alloy wheels; 17-inch alloys on TX and high-gloss painted 18-inch rims on VX and VX-L derivatives. New elements at the rear include a redesigned lamp cluster (featuring two stacked C-shapes) with an LED stop light and a restyled bumper. Prado is offered in 6 exterior colours including a new red-hued Crimson metallic and earthy AvantGarde Bronze metallic finish. Higher quality interior The top of the new centre console tower has been set lower (by 25mm) for a sleeker appearance and better front-on visibility when driving off-road. It is fitted with a new eight-inch, full-colour multimedia screen, a flush-fitting air conditioning control panel and the drivetrain-related instrument cluster. A 4.2-inch TFT colour multi-information display is provided (VX and VX-L) which presents comprehensive vehicle and infotainment data, controlled using switches on the steering

wheel. The combination leather- and wood-trimmed steering wheel itself is new, shared with the larger Land Cruiser 200. Two interior colour schemes are available: Black and new elegant ‘Neutral Beige’. A matte-finish Walnut wood trim is paired with the Black interior, whilst the Beige iteration is paired with a modernistic matte “blonde wood” accent. Specification additions TX models inherit the much favoured ‘coolbox’ located in the centre console binnacle, whilst all models are now equipped with seat ventilation for driver and passenger -in addition to the seat-heating function (for first and second row occupants). The top-tier VX and VX-L models are outfitted with Satellite Navigation and an enhanced surround-view Multi Terrain Monitor camera system with Panoramic and under-vehicle modes. The 14-speaker Premium touchscreen infotainment system incorporates a tablet-like design and easy to operate switchgear. The standard convenience specification list includes: automatic dual-zone climate control, 6-speaker audio system, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, illuminated entry, cruise control, park distance control, keyless entry, three power outlets, Bluetooth connectivity, USB, 3rd row seating and reverse camera. High grade models add memory function for the driver’s seat, a 14-speaker Premium audio system with woofer, multi-information display, power tilt-and-telescopic steering adjustment, rain-sensing wipers and power-fold-down 3rd row seats. Diesel and petrol powertrains The Land Cruiser Prado retains the proven 3.0 D-4D engine, offering 120 kW and 400 Nm available between 1,6002,800 rpm. This is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with gear ratios optimized for low-speed tractability and offroad use. The 4.0-litre petrol engine uses a six-speed automatic transmission. Maximum power is 202 kW at 5,600rpm, with peak torque of 381Nm delivered at 4,400rpm. Off-road technologies All Prado models feature Toyota’s Active Traction Control system (A-TRAC), which actively regulates wheel-slip, by directing torque to the wheel with the most traction. A lowrange transmission with user-selectable diff-lock and Hill Assist Control (HAC), naturally forms part of the standard ensemble. The Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system (VX and VX-L only) allows the driver to select the correct mode depending on the ‘road’ ahead. Five pre-configured modes (mud & sand, loose rock, mogul, rock & dirt and rock) are selectable, to tailor the vehicle’s traction control, transmission characteristics, power delivery and suspension settings to the terrain at hand. The 4.0 V6 derivatives additionally feature ‘Drive Mode Select’ which offers five modes; Comfort, Sport, Sport +, Normal and Eco; to adapt vehicle dynamics according to driver preference.

Expanded range of safety features VX-L grade versions of the new 2017 Prado are equipped with Toyota Safety Sense active technologies to help prevent accidents from happening, or mitigating the consequences if an impact does occur. The package includes a Pre-Collision System (PCS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Automatic High Beam (AHB). The Adaptive Cruise Control system uses radar sensors in the front grille to monitor the distance to the vehicle in front and applies corrective action via both throttle and brake inputs to maintain a specified ‘gap’. Further driver support is provided in the form of a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (both VX and VX-L) and an upgraded tyre pressure warning system – with digital read out in the multi-information display. These active safety systems complement the standard seven airbags and comprehensive brake and stability control systems (ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, VSC, Trailer Sway Control and aforementioned Traction Control).

Do You Experience an Abnormal Heart Rhythm? This type of heart problem can be treated at LADY POHAMBA PRIVATE HOSPITAL! Only recently this health service and treatment became available in Namibia!

THE TREATMENT CONSISTS OF AN ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY STUDY AND CATHETER ALBLATION What is an electrophysiology (EP) study and catheter ablation? An EP study is a test to measure the electrical activity of the heart and to diagnose arrhythmia or abnormal heart rhythms. An abnormal heart rhythm is a change in either the speed or the pattern of the heartbeat. During an abnormal heart rhythm, the heart may beat too slowly, too rapidly or irregularly. This means that the heart’s electrical impulse pathway is interrupted by abnormal signals which cause irregular contractions of the heart muscle. During an EP study, an electrode catheter (a specialised wire) is inserted into the heart to record the electrical signals from the inside of the heart to detect the origin of the abnormal heart rhythm. After the study follows the catheter ablation procedure. Catheter ablation is a procedure performed to treat some types of abnormal heart rhythms. A Cardiologist (specialist doctor) positions an electrode catheter in the heart, close to the abnormal electrical impulse pathway that is causing the abnormal heart rhythm. The

doctor initiates radio-frequency energy through the catheter tip. The catheter tip is heated to destroy the small area of the heart tissue containing the abnormal electrical impulse pathway. The ‘burn’ heals with a small scar and the abnormal electrical impulse pathway is no longer capable of producing the abnormal heart rhythm.

Is the EP study and catheter ablation procedure safe? Yes, the EP study and catheter ablation procedure is considered safe. As with any procedure, there are potential risks. The risks will be explained by the Cardiologist (specialist doctor) before the procedure is performed. How long will the procedure (EP study and catheter ablation) take? An EP study and catheter ablation may take between two to six hours, depending on the condition of the patient. A patient that undergoes the procedure may return home the same day after the procedure or spend one night in the hospital and return home the next morning.

The perfect birding tour of Namibia Chris Lotz is the owner of birding tour company, Birding Ecotours. His abundant enthusiasm for Namibia shines through as he takes us on, what he considers, the perfect birding tour of Namibia. Hard to argue with him - 18 days, 400 birds, and over 40 mammals…now that’s a magical Namibian tour! Words by Chris Lotz of Birding Ecotours

To say Chris Lotz is passionate about birds, birding and sharing this love of birds with others, would be a giant understatement. He grins, “I travel worldwide in search of birds, but quite honestly, Namibia remains my favourite country on earth, yet to be topped by any other country I’ve seen.” There it is, in a nutshell, and he’s determined that his clients – soon to become friends – will feel just the same. It’s not just about the birding, although that’s the focus…it’s about a group of likeminded people sharing a lifetime experience in an environment that’s truly unique. You’ll see.

Lotz chatted to Flamingo about Birding Ecotours’ birding trips, what to expect, and how easy it is to fall in love in Namibia: “We usually start our trips with a flight into Walvis Bay. Here, it’s easy to find the country’s only true endemic, Dune Lark, found nowhere else on the planet except in Namibia. We also start looking for the species that only occur in Namibia and southern Angola (but which are much easier to find in Namibia because of its good roads and lodging facilities). Walvis Bay lagoon usually also boasts insane numbers of flamingos – typically about 18,000 Greater Flamingos and 16,000 Lesser Flamingos! Beautiful Chestnut-banded Plovers and a myriad migrant shorebirds, only adds to the attraction. After two nights in Walvis Bay, we then head slightly inland and amble northwards along the impressive Namib Escarpment. The landscape is spectacular, with large mountains such as the Spitzkoppe, or “Matterhorn of Namibia”, that rises abruptly from the vast desert plain. The slopes of this giant rock attract Rosy-faced Lovebirds (tiny parrots that are largely restricted to Namibia), Monteiro’s Hornbill, the charismatic White-tailed Shrike and a good number of other birds that occur only in Namibia and southern Angola. The real prize here though is the elusive, scarce and range-restricted Herero Chat, an unassuming species with no close relatives. Black Mongoose and Dassie Rat are two very interesting small mammals that also enjoy the rock crevices of this batholith. Camping at the base of the huge rocks is a memorable experience, but there is also a fabulous new lodge here (http://www.spitzkoppenlodge.com/).

the reason we crave pizza We then continue northwards, stopping to search the base of Namibia’s highest mountain (the Brandberg) for Benguela Long-billed Lark, Ruppell’s Parrot and others. Nearby, we sometimes encounter Desert Elephants. We eventually reach the top of an escarpment and look down onto an unforgettable sight: a large perennial river in the middle of the desert – the Kunene River, beyond which is Angola. Two nights at http:// www.kuneneriverlodge.com/ on the banks of this river is not only an idyllic experience, but it is also extremely productive from a birding point of view. We quite often see Bat Hawk hunting over the river at dusk, but the real prizes are species that are largely restricted to Angola and which barely cross into Namibia. One of these is Cinderella Waxbill, a tricky bird to find – we look for it during the heat of the day when it comes down to drink at known watering spots. The other one is an even more exciting bird, Angola Cave Chat. This striking bird was thought to be an Angola endemic, until a healthy population of them was discovered a few years ago in the incredibly remote, amazingly rugged, Zebra Mountains within Namibia! The humungous Etosha National Park is next on our agenda. One of the world’s greatest game parks, Etosha is one of the easiest places in the world to see Black Rhino, and is also great for Leopard, Lion, Cheetah, some of the smaller cats, and more. We look for all the big and small mammals, while continuing with our primary goal of birding. The park is also a great place for owls, and we find a lot of these at their daytime roosts, from the tiny African Scops Owl to the gigantic Verreaux’s Eagle Owl. The world’s heaviest flying bird, Kori Bustard, is common here, as is one of Africa’s most iconic birds, Secretarybird. Traversing Etosha from west to east, we eventually find ourselves not too far from the Caprivi Strip, a long finger-like piece of land extending far to the east. The Caprivi Strip is a world away from the deserts that Namibia is famous for. This is a land of giant rivers, notably the Kavango and the Zambezi (which is one of Africa’s largest rivers). We search the Caprivi Strip for “Okavango-type” birds such as Pel’s Fishing Owl, Slaty Egret, African Skimmer, a stack of dazzling, colourful beeeater and kingfisher species, and a rich array of others. Sharptailed Starling, Sousa’z Shrike and Rufous-bellied Tit are three localised species of the woodlands here. Once we are at the eastern end of the Caprivi Strip, Victoria Falls is only 2.5 hours’ drive further, so we often fly home from there. Doing this Walvis Bay to Victoria Falls transect warrants 18 days on a guided tour, or more than that on a self-drive (as it takes more time to find the target birds). We end up with almost 400 bird species and over 40 mammals, at the end of this tour. What I really love about this trip, however, are the dramatic, spectacular, remarkably diverse landscapes.”

Clay, Naturally Trees, forests, leaves. Those are the threads which run through all of Rika Herbst’s intricate porcelain work

Edited by Anne Schauffer Photographs supplied by Rika Herbst

R

ika Herbst grew up in the mining town of Virginia in the Free State, a simple life with space and freedom to express herself. Her father was an artisan, her mother always doing handwork, either knitting or needlework. Rika always had access to paper, crayons, pens and paint, even making her own clothes from when she was a teenager… and going into her father’s garage to build things with scraps of wood or metal. When Rika finished school, she planned on studying clothing design, but the course was only available in Durban. The idea of her travelling and living alone in Durban was not something her father would entertain. In 1989, Rika married, and moved to Gauteng. She worked in a pharmaceutical company, handling their marketing, racking up a series of diplomas in marketing, business management, investment promotion….but never anything creative. But she never forgot the childhood games in mud, from the backyard to the river bed to working in Pratley’s Putty, to make 3D projects for school. In 1990, Rika and a friend joined a ceramics class. The studio closed a few months later and she couldn’t find another one…but the bug had bitten. When her children reached school-going age, her husband gave her a birthday gift of classes for a year. She was ecstatic, and she says quite simply, “It changed my life”. When that studio stopped offering classes, she opened her own studio, and began teaching out of her garage. When Rika’s children went off to university, she signed up with UNISA and is currently in her third year of a Bachelor of Visual Art. Flamingo asked her about her ceramics, the themes which run through her work, and why porcelain is her chosen material in which to express herself: “The subject matter in my work are trees, forests, leaves. Trees are mankind’s lifeline and, if destroyed, there is no way human beings can survive. From the oxygen we breathe in, the food we eat and the clothes we wear, we owe it all to trees. They act as purifiers of air and receptacles of our waste products; they have great economic value providing fuel, timber, medicines and numerous other valuable products. That is why I choose to depict the great importance of forests. Today, the forests are in danger and their survival is at stake - this is my reminder of the qualities of trees. “Trees have no hidden agenda; they are free from pretence or deceit; they stand tall and produce oxygen despite changing circumstances in nature, and no matter what mankind is doing to our planet, they regenerate. As trees remove pollution by sucking up the gases through tiny openings - stomata - on

leaves, these ‘mouths’ are visible as pierced holes. The canopy layer is where photosynthesis takes place and therefore the emphasis on the edge. What better way to represent the trees being resilient and yet transparent? Porcelain as a material is strong but can transmit light, visible in the rays of light through the holes and the subtle light through the branches of the forest. “Working in porcelain is challenging, but I have learned to understand the medium and to challenge it to the limits, which also challenges my abilities. I think my work has become refined, and it is currently changing dramatically. Producing work for sales and export and work for exhibitions requires a balancing act of creativity and stability, not always easily achieved. I do find that when I have deadlines for production of orders, that my creativity levels increase, probably because I need to complete the orders first, then I can play and create and explore.” Rika recalls her first sale: “The very first time I put up a piece for sale and exhibition was at the Ceramics Southern Africa National Exhibition at the University of Johannesburg in August 2008 - one piece was accepted, the other not, but the piece was exhibited and sold. It gave me such a wonderful boost that my work was good enough and liked.” It certainly was both of those things, for today, Rika sells and exhibits prolifically, and has won many accolades for her work. Highlights include August 2009, when she was selected by the SA Department of Sport, Art & Culture to represent her work at a platform called Icons at Decorex; in Oct 2010, she won an award for Best Porcelain Piece at the Ceramics Southern Africa National exhibition; in April and June 2011, her work was accepted at the International Biennale for Japan and Korea: “This was probably the highlight for me. The piece in Korea was taken for their private collection, and they exhibited again in July 2015 at a special exhibition called ‘The Promenade: Healing in Nature’, a co-exhibition of Icheon World Ceramic Center and the National Folk Musuem of Korea.” Since her children left home, Rika spends full days in the studio: “It gives me more time to be creative and productive. I still teach two classes a week for children and adults, which keeps me grounded and connected.” Next year, with her studies, she will be exposed to conceptual practical work: “Who knows where that will lead me to? I am open for growth and development and look forward to it, albeit it being scary…as in undiscovered territory ahead. I don’t want to move away from my medium of porcelain, but a dream is to one day combine the clay and class in my designs. Watch this space.

race Kotze is an artist and art teacher. After studying art at school, she continued her creative journey by studying and qualifying with a four year Fine Art Diploma – specialising in Visual Art - at Durban University of Technology (DUT). Grace is extremely hard-working, and she says, if you want to succeed as a full-time artist, there is no other way but to put your head down and be incredibly disciplined. She says the biggest misconception about being an artist is that it’s easy and relaxing. For her, the characteristics needed to pursue a full-time career in the arts, are, “Great perseverance, hard-working, a willingness to take chances, live off very little, and the ability to take rejection. Grace Kotze, artist, is well known in South Africa, and her work is not only found within SA borders, but without, too. Flamingo chatted to her about the challenges and joys of working as a full-time artist:

What role did Visual Art play in preparing you for your studies/career? My studies at school and University largely emphasised technical skills, as well as encouraging us to search for a deeper content in images. This equipped me well in the market place as I was able to produce a marketable “product” rather than a theory. What would you say is your biggest accomplishment in your career so far? By far my biggest achievement is that I’m still working in visual arts, as it is very tough to do under normal circumstances, let alone in these challenging economic times. Describe and define your career field In the past I have worked in many design fields, from the art department in the movie industry, mural work and fabric design,

to teaching, curating and more. To keep going and not take on a 9 to 5 job, I have had to be flexible and learn on my feet. But now, I’m focusing on my painting and some teaching. I exhibit in many galleries country wide and every two years or so, I have a solo exhibition. My next solo is this October at the KZNSA Gallery in Durban.

What inspires your work? We live on an amazing planet with the most incredible surrounds which I take from with relish! I have to paint with authenticity, so I need to use images to which I have a strong emotional connection. Durban is an incredibly textured environment which is a fabulous inspiration for my work.

Describe your average day: I usually start work at about 6.30am, then break for breakfast and later for lunch. My painting day usually ends at about 5. After supper I try to do a little bit of painting or (the dreaded) administration, editing photos, answering emails, quotations, press releases, packaging works for couriers and so on. Presently, I am working on a group of about 20 works for my solo exhibition, and possibly a second solo, both at the end of the year. I usually work on these two projects for half the month, then work on projects for galleries countrywide for the other half.

How would you describe your subject matter? I have to listen to my emotions very closely when deciding what to paint, as my selection has to ring true to my internal concerns. If I ignore them, my work is sloppily painted and shallow in content. In the past, I have been very drawn to figures and portraits (which will be appearing in my work again soon, botanicals, city and landscapes.) But no matter what I am painting, it has to have an emotional hook for me so that I can lose myself in the image-making process and imbue it with my own vision.

Tell us three artists/ designers in your field that you admire Rembrandt, Diane Victor and Yuko Shimizu are just a few of many artists, movie directors and illustrators. What is your favourite piece of work, and why? I don’t have a favourite. To be honest, I often lose interest once I have painted the works as the painting process is far more interesting to me than the finished pieces. I love the journey more than the destination. Why do you love what you do? It’s who I am. Being an artist allows me to breathe, it engages my intellect and emotions. Each day is a new and exciting challenge. What advice would you give somebody starting out? Work. Work. Work! And drop your pride and be realistic about starting at the bottom of the art food chain.

MARKETING

The rainmaker Hospitality & Tourism Marketing Academy The rainmaker Tourism and Hospitality Marketing Academy keeps you up to date with the most recent developments in Digital Presence Exposure, Optimization, Reputation and Distribution Management. Every month we publish a dedicated marketing tip or highlight certain travel and consumer trends for the Tourism and Hospitality Industry. rainmaker is the brainchild of some of the most experienced hospitality, tourism and digital marketing veterans in the industry. We bring 50 years of experience in the hotel, tourism, sales and marketing fields, as well as more than 35 years of experience in IT and 15 years’ digital marketing experience to your project. This is enhanced by over 7 years of in-depth research and involvement in the Southern African hospitality and tourism industry, giving us peerless insight into the various source markets, market segments, value chains and market dynamics.

TIP #12 | Market disruption is inevitable in the age of innovation  —  but how do you manage it? “Thomas Müller CEO @ rainmaker digital "Google Agency and Digital Marketing Agency for the Hospitality and Tourism Industry has 35+ years of experience in IT and 15+ years of experience in digital marketing in the hospitality and tourism industry, as well as 8 years of experience in the Southern African tourism industry, Thomas has an in-depth understanding of the relevant source markets, value chains and the market dynamics in Southern Africa. Thomas used to work in Digital Marketing and in on site Resort management at the 5-star TUI and Thomas Cook properties. As General Manager Marketing & IT he was part of the turnaround team of O&L Leisure Hotels & Lodges in Namibia. From the marketing perspective, he was part of the design, development and opening team of O&L’s Strand Hotel Swakopmund.”

Airbnb has disrupted the local Namibian hospitality market, much like it did in other countries. It created a new market and proposition that did not previously exist. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with what they did. Instead of fearing them, the Namibian hospitality industry should embrace them. Consider how these new developments can assist other businesses in achieving their goals. The digital revolution brings opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses, opportunities they would never have had even 10 years ago. The digital revolution is not the problem, the reluctance to change is the problem, as it has been throughout the ages. Let’s start by creating an overly simplified scenario. Jack and Jill have guesthouses next door to each other. Both do very well in the current market. Peter, one of their other neighbours, opens a guesthouse too. His guesthouse offers lower rates and is more modern. Both Jack and Jill lose 50% of their occupancy to Peter’s new venture. Jack decides to do renovations to improve his sales. It works, and Jack’s sales are back up. Jill believes she needn’t spend money if her model has worked well so far. Rick, another neighbour, realises their location has potential and joins Airbnb. Jack, Jill and Peter lose some business to Rick. Jack hires a marketing agency to improve his strategy and online presence. It works, and Jack soon exceeds his previous sales. Rick gets a website and does a bit of marketing and his occupancy goes back to what it was previously. Jill still thinks she will be fine and business will come back eventually. The Namibia Tourism Board announces that Airbnb users have to register their properties as an accommodation establishment. Jill is overjoyed and gets her staff members to protest outside Rick’s house for two days until the NTB approaches him about registration. Rick’s Airbnb account is closed for two months while he sorts out his logistical issues. Jill waits for business to go up, but nothing happens. All Rick’s

MARKETING

would-be customers go to Jack and Peter’s establishments due to their strong brand identities. Rick eventually gets back into business and, shortly afterwards, Jill goes out of business. Some business operators simply can’t afford to drastically change their way of doing business, especially if they don’t have the knowledge or expertise. This is understandable, but go back to basics — what set you apart from your competitors initially? Would you objectively choose your own company above your competitors? If so, why? You need to leverage this and then, through very simple and effective steps forward, get back your competitive advantage. Plus, you need to know and understand your customers and their needs, desires and wants. Keep in mind, “if you do what you always did, you get what you always got”. This is certainly the case when people aren’t open to changing their business model. While the world and business around them is undergoing a paradigm change, they stick to their status quo. The Hospitality and Tourism Industry is in flux, there’s huge growth as globally more tourists are discovering the magic that is ‘The Land of the Brave.’ However, to fully benefit, a business needs to be fast, agile and able to adapt accordingly and change its go-to market, business model; as well as tweaking the way it engages and acquires new and returning business.

This does not mean that there shouldn’t be regulations in place to establish fair and level competition. Airbnb has created a completely new market, encouraging homeowners to rent out their rooms in competition with established hospitality businesses. It is obvious that those private operators have to be compliant with the regulations, adhering to fire & safety guidelines, getting registered, accredited, pay tax and levies like any other market player in the hospitality industry. Considering the rapid rate at which the industry is changing, growing and new technology is arriving constantly, it is important to remain relevant. Do this by keeping up with trends and embracing new ideas. If a disruptive entity enters the market, don’t be afraid to follow their lead, perhaps even improve on it. See what makes them successful and learn from that. Find your Unique Value Proposition, build on it and find ways to combine it with current trends. Most importantly, if anything happens to slow down the disruptive entity’s success, don’t get your pitchforks and chase them out of town. Look at how you can prevent similar issues or solve their problem for yourself. Obstacles present opportunities, not dead ends.

Zapata Flyboard Flying Personal Watercraft

Zapata Flyride was born out of Franky Zapata’s idea, a world jetski champion. It’s a thrill ride for extreme riders designed specially to make hydroflight for everyone, yes, even beginners. Flyrid is a flying personal watercraft, it combines the similar form and control of a personal watercraft with computer aided flight control and gyro stabilization; this is the same technology developed and used in Zapata’s Flyboard Air and EZ-Fly jet. After the famous Flyboard, Zapata offers Flyride, a 2-seater ground breaking device with the shape of a compact quad bike that can be attached to any jet ski via a tailored hose and jet capture system. You can plug Flyride to a 300-horsepower jet ski and enjoy the thrill. Thanks to specially developed Zapata’s self-balancing tech, a set of internal sensors and computers, this system allows the bike to stay upright whatever the rider’s doing. There are four flight modes available, so it is designed for anyone, from kids, beginners, to advanced users. Just in case the experience of being launched above the water is not enough for you, there’s a barrel roll button that you can activate once you’ve reached the right altitude. You can press this button and spin wildly before going back to vertical, it’ll give you an awesome and crazy ride.

AIRBOT Smart Air Purifier

AirBot is a concept smart air purifier combined with a vacuum cleaner. It’s a multifunctional home appliance that cleans not just air but also your floor. An air purifier that just stands on one side of your living room won’t be able to clean the air of the whole house, that’s why AirBot is designed with IOT ability. Designed by Heewong Chai, AirBot would communicate with smart home systems to move itself when poor air quality is detected in the air. It’ll move to a place where air purification is needed. The air purification system features automatic control, air quality analysis, motion sensor, consumption analysis, video recording, Wi-Fi, IOT communication, and even voice recognition. ENHANCED SKILLS FOR VEHICLE OPERATORS Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) vehicle operators recently underwent an advanced 4x4 driving skill training from Indongo Toyota in Southern Namibia with the sole purpose of refreshing their vehicle handling abilities. REVISION IN ENTRANCE FEE AT GROSS BARMEN Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) recently increased its day visitor entrance fee at Gross Barmen Resort to N$ 200.00 per person (pp). The price adjustment is for day visitors intending to make use of the braai facilities and mini pool at the campsites. If a day visitor would like to make use of the thermal pool and other facilities, an additional payment of N$ 100 pp will be required. that we value the business we get from our tour operators”, said Ms Kaulu.

Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) recently held an awards ceremony at its Gross Barmen Resort aimed at awarding its top performing tour operators. The awards were given based upon the value of business that the tour operators provided NWR.

Mr Epson Kasuto, NWR Chief Marketing Officer, used the opportunity to highlight the direction the company is taking to further provide value to the tourists that visit it. During his presentation, he appealed to tour operators to look at making use of the lesser visited resorts and camps that the company is currently operating to diversify their product offering.

During the awards ceremony Ms Tangeni Kaulu, NWR Trade and Promotions Manager, recalled how during her school days, students always looked forward to receiving an award at the end of the year. Based upon this noble gesture that she recalled, herself and the marketing team with the blessing of the NWR board decided to host an event specifically aimed at rewarding the best performing tour operators.

“As a company that is geared towards appreciating the hard work of our partners, we believe that this award ceremony is an opportunity for us to say thank you to them and to encourage them to continue working hand in hand with us. It is through such platforms that we as a company can show

“There is an opportunity for tour operators to consider having their client’s sleepover at Gross Barmen Resort just before they leave for their respective destinations since we have a SPA facility here. I believe that tourists can enjoy the services offered at Gross Barmen while they wind down before they leave Namibia”. Mr Kasuto concluded by saying that, “due to the important role that tour operators play, we look forward to making this an annual event”. Some of the entities that received awards were Sense of Africa, Wild Africa Travel, Namibia Travel Connection, Abenteuer Afrika Safari and Namibia Tracks and Trails.
