We at Air Namibia are committed to the development of our human resources as demonstrated by our annual investments in training and type rating progression. Adv. Mandi E.P. Samson Acting Managing Director

Dear Esteemed Passenger, Thank you for choosing Air Namibia as your carrier of choice! Air Namibia recently participated in the 47th Airline Association of Southern Africa (AASA) Annual General Assembly (AGA) under the theme, “building human capital for African airlines.” At the event, Air Namibia contributed to a panel discussion hosted under the banner: “the secret to survival of the fittest and coping with change and new technology – the role of human capital management.” Human resources are critical components of any business and are indeed close to my heart. Human beings by nature have the ability to rapidly adapt to varying and changing environments. This natural advantage can be emulated in an organisational set up, by empowering employees with the latest skills and knowledge to meet the ever-changing skills required by modern technology.

major benefits, with speed being the obvious. Often speed is of the essence when transporting goods. Logistics chains and manufacturing processes are based upon companies receiving their goods when they need them. Furthermore, it is the most reliable method of transportation. The aviation industry also offers a tremendously high level of security which has the capability to considerably cut the risk of damage or theft whilst goods are in transit. Having Air Namibia fulfil this important role, not only delivers a feeling of passion and pride in the national carrier, it further brings with it the much-needed jobs and foreign exchange revenue to the country. Air freight not only delivers the world, but it helps grow and accelerate development in the Land of the Brave.

We at Air Namibia are committed to the development of our human resources as demonstrated by our annual investments in training and type rating progression. This commitment to quality and upholding compliance is further demonstrated by the choice of service providers the company use for the training of pilots. Knowing there are cheaper options, Air Namibia still chooses to use the world’s best and renowned training centres.

In our monthly efforts to promote domestic tourism, we focus on Namibia Wildlife Resort’s (NWR) /Ai-/Ais Hotsprings and Spa. This resort lies at the southern end of the Fish River Conservation area, in the Namibian portion of the Ai-Ais / Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. This national park spans two countries: Namibia and South Africa. Ai-Ais means “burning water” in one of the local languages and refers to the sulphurous hot springs found in this area. The resort recently received a major facelift with the rooms and restaurant undergoing fantastic upgrades.

In this month’s edition of the Flamingo, I would further like to touch on our cargo services. Using air freight services has

Breathtaking Book Art Is it craft, fine art, sculpture or design? Whatever the pigeonhole, it’s truly exquisite. Su Blackwell is the artist, and the new terminology is book art Edited by Anne Schauffer Photographs supplied by Su Blackwell

S

u Blackwell grew up in Sheffield in the United Kingdom, and was taught to hand embroider by her ‘nan’, who she says, was also a very skilled dressmaker. Su studied textiles at a local college, where it was clear she had a flair for drawing: “I was encouraged by my tutor to apply for a degree in mixed media textiles, and was accepted on to the MA course in textiles at the Royal College of Art in London.” Su moved to London to study there, and lived in West London for the next ten years.

When Su’s daughter was born in 2012, she moved to the south coast to live closer to family. “Hastings is a small, artistic community, and living by the sea has been very inspirational.” Su didn’t begin using books to make art until after leaving the RCA, and it happened organically. When she finished college, she spent 12 months in Scotland on an artist residency: “My studio was situated in a vast country park. I began experimenting by cutting out illustrations from an old book of flora and fauna, and leaving the paper cut-outs in the woodlands to deteriorate. “I was naturally drawn to three-dimensional forms, and while I was living in Scotland, I happened upon a second-hand bookshop selling tattered copies of the old children’s books I had loved reading as a child - books such as ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘The Secret Garden’. Flicking through the pages, the illustrations brought back memories, and armed with a bagful of books, I left the shop and reread all of them. I began by cutting out the illustrations of the characters and setting them in unsettling scenes, such as sparse woodland. I made wooden boxes to house the sculptures, and began incorporating LED lights to highlight areas, create shadows, and add suspense.

“The characters were cut out of the books and attached to fine wires to suspend them.” Su usually comes up with a sketch for an idea, then begins cutting, but she says the work often changes from the original idea: “I make alterations as and when I’m making. It’s a very laborious task, and working on such a small scale really invites you in to explore the minute details.” Su does all the work herself, and for the past six years, has had an assistant ‘Emma’ who helps with the cutting two days a week. The boxes are made by a friend, the carpenter ‘Finbarr Lucas’ in Sheffield. Su’s inspiration comes from the books themselves: “I am always on the look-out for old discarded books, and stories that can inspire me. I don’t feel like there has been one big breakthrough, it’s been more of a snowball effect, gathering momentum the further it rolls.” In the early days, Su recalls applying for exhibitions and residencies, but kept getting knocked back. It didn’t deter her, she just kept on creating her artwork. Then in 2006, three years after graduating from college, she was accepted into the Craft Council’s Origin Show at Somerset House. She created a body of ten works, all of which sold out the first day of exhibiting. She also had a piece featured in Vogue magazine UK, and it was then that she knew that perhaps she was onto something. “In 2007, I was invited to design the Christmas window display at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, which had been one of my dreams from childhood. Another high point was illustrating a book ‘The Fairytale Princess’ in 2012, published by Thames & Hudson the book has since been translated into over 7 languages. Since 2006, Su has exhibited all over the world, from Tokyo to New York, and there are currently plans to exhibit in Moscow. Her next projects involve a residency in Azerbaijan, a Christmas installation at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, and a commission

for a Museum of Childhood. Long and Ryle gallery in Pimlico represent her work, and she has a solo show there every two years, her next show scheduled for October 2018. Su enjoys her work largely because it’s so diverse: “I never know what projects are around the next corner.”

A

n icon of South Africa for over 70 years, the Blue Train is an inspired way to travel from Pretoria to Cape Town, or vice versa. There’s also a seasonal trip which takes you from Pretoria to Kruger National Park. The Cape Town-Pretoria trip is a 31 hour indulgence, which effectively whips you back in time to the slow days of ties and jackets, wood panelled dining rooms, and a 24 hour personalised butler service. The Blue Train prides itself on providing seamless five-star African-style service and hospitality, with fine cuisine and a sensational array of wines. Nothing is too much trouble, nothing is too decadent. Everything is at your pace, and there’s no rush at all. You can choose between a deluxe or the slightly larger luxury suite, with en suite facilities of baths or showers. Easy does it. You’ll get a sense of the style and luxury you’re in for, when you step into The Blue Train’s pre-departure lounges in Pretoria or Cape Town. Guests check in an hour prior to departure, and platform gates close 45 minutes prior to departure. The pre-departure lounge in Pretoria is a few metres away from the Gautrain Pretoria Station, while the Cape Town lounge is nestled up at Cape Town railway station, on Old Marine Drive, the main railway station of this, the ‘Mother City’. From Pretoria, The Blue Train travels the 1600 Km (994 Miles) journey in just 31-hours, and is ideal for visitors who have shorter itineraries in South Africa. Southbound, the off-the-train excursion (weather and time permitting) includes the diamond town of Kimberley where one can explore the legendary Big Hole and the Diamond Museum. Northbound, guests visit the historical town of Matjiesfontein where the Victorian buildings and original nineteenth century London lampposts impart an uncanny sense of entering a colonial time warp.

The Blue Train has another route. It travels to SA’s Limpopo Province, home to the Kruger National Park. These one-way 19 hour overnight journeys take place in selected months of the year, and offer guests the opportunity of some fantastic new rail safari combination packages with the many private safari lodges found in the great Kruger and Sabi Sands areas. In keeping with tradition, it is customary to dress formally for dinner to match the elegance of the Blue Train. Elegant for ladies, jacket and tie for men; smart casual during the day. The Lounge Car is designed as a meeting place for pre-lunch and dinner drinks, and afternoon tea (no smoking), while the Club Car is perfect for a post dinner Cognac or Cuban cigar. Whether you choose the Blue Train as a sensational way to get from A to B…a wonderful surprise for that special someone…or as a great escape from the outside world, either way, you’re going to love the pampering, the scenery and the opportunity to just breathe deeply and enjoy the ride. The Blue Train has received endless accolades over the years from leading international publications such as Conde Nast Traveller, and is a multiple winner of prestigious titles like ‘The World’s Leading Luxury Train’ and more.

Cathy Layzell – A Studio Visit Tamlyn Martin and Talita Swarts are Artroute Cape Town. Tamlyn visited artist Cathy Layzell in her Woodstock studio you can too, with Artroute Words and photographs by Tamlyn Martin

W

hen one enters Cathy Layzell's light flooded, 4th floor, Woodstock studio, one is immediately struck by the panoramic views of Table Mountain and Cape Town Harbour. On a clear day, you can see all the way out to Robben Island. The views of the majestic, ever-transforming Table Mountain somehow puts one’s scale within the landscape, into sharp perspective. Once your eyes settle, you realise the studio is populated with numerous large scale canvases. Cathy works with a ferocity of colour and lush impasto paint, creating abstracted natural and emotional landscapes. Some of her work is reminiscent of the 19th Century Romantics, reminding one that the landscape is often a metaphor for internal emotional worlds, while others speak to abstract expressionism and post-impressionism. Her most recent works employ spectral colour optics as if glowing out of an illuminated digital screen. In Cathy's "Reserve" works, she paints the blinding midday light as it dances through the moist shaded darkness of forests in Greyton. There is an enchanting sophistication and interpretive quality to these canvases. They invite one into their pictorial terrain to explore and complete their shadowy play between positive and negative space.

EDITORIAL

On the day of our visit Cathy had just completed a large immersive, 3,6 meter diptych forest of the "Reserve" series, which was about to be showcased at the JHB Art Fair. She is excited about painting on such a large scale: “I wanted to create a huge canvas of the forest, to create the sensation that you are standing inside the painting, within this partially illuminated, untamed space... bathed in light and nature." Cathy's previous body of work "Wilderness" employs a more painterly expressive style. These works, though inspired by the waterfalls and forest vistas in the Outeniqua Mountains, go way beyond the scenic aesthetic their inspiration suggests. They meld a complex abstract language with a powerful respect for the sublime, often overwhelming, forces of nature. One can almost hear the cascading water plummeting across rock faces into dark deep pools. Natasha Norman - writing on Cathy's wilderness series: "What we seek in this concept of wilderness is a place without the anchors of our civilising culture. A place without the artificial social supports of familiar ego structures. Elements of later bodies of Cathy's work, still present in her studio, give one an insightful glimpse into her artistic progression and creative process over the last 4 years. Each year she creates a new conceptual body of work for a large scale solo exhibition.

It was wonderful to see examples of work from "Polynesia" 2015 - exploring aquatic, tropical coral gardens with a beautiful bold colourist pallet reminiscent of Matisse. "Connect the Dots” 2014 - an unashamedly abstract body of work - has a whimsical, playful, effervescent quality. “Expulsion from the Garden" 2013 Cathy's breakaway from representative botanicals into complete colourist abstraction, which she playfully calls her colourist and mark "composting" phase.

When temperatures drop, macaques often huddle together to pool their body heat, forming what’s known as a saru dango, or “monkey dumpling.” This behaviour is common among the 23 species of macaques, all of which form complex matriarchal societies. It is especially important for Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), which live in colder climates than any other primate, aside from humans. On frigid days, their need for warmth clearly outweighs their desire for personal space.

This past January, a steady stream of lava, called a firehose, suddenly gushed from an underground lava tube at the base of Hawai’i’s Kilauea volcano and spilled into the Pacific Ocean. As the molten rock met the cooler seawater, steam, sand, and chunks of cooled lava were thrown explosively into the air. The impact of these continual bursts of energy eventually created a crack in the 90-foot seacliff, which expanded over the course of a week until a section of the cliff broke off entirely and sloughed into the sea.

Surrounded by black volcanic sands, a peacock mantis shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus) stands guard over her ribbon-like mass of fertilized eggs. The folds of this portable, flexible structure—held together with an adhesive produced by the mother—provide ample surface area for gas exchange between the egg membranes and the surrounding environment. The female cleans and aerates the developing eggs with the same appendages she typically uses to handle prey. With her limbs more than full caring for her brood, the female won’t eat until the eggs hatch and the larvae disperse.

To capture this view of a mother grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) and her cub, photographer Peter Mather set up a camera trap on a log that he knew the bears tended to traverse while fishing for salmon. Packed with both protein and fat, salmon provide grizzlies with a critical source of energy and nutrients during the spawning season. However, the fish can also carry high levels of environmental toxins, such as mercury, that put the bears at risk. Because mercury accumulates in the tissues of organisms and is passed along the food chain, top predators like grizzlies tend to be exposed to higher concentrations of the toxic metal. Indeed, scientists have found that some 70 percent of grizzly bears sampled along the coast of British Columbia over the past decade contained mercury levels above what is considered safe.

These elephant feet-turned-footstools are among some 1.3 million confiscated wildlife products housed in a U.S. Fish and Wildlife repository near Denver, Colorado. Despite bans on the international trade of products made from endangered species, such goods continue to find their way into illegal markets. Until recently, it was unknown whether these items were leaking out of repositories or coming from recent kills. To find out, researchers radiocarbon dated 231 ivory samples seized between 2002 and 2014. They found that only one of the samples was old enough to have come from storage, which suggests that persistent poaching continues to be the primary source of ivory goods. And the practice is taking a heavy toll. A recent census found that African elephant (Loxodonta africana) populations have shrunk by an average of 8 percent each year over the past decade.

The remote Revillagigedo Islands off the west coast of Mexico are actually the four highest peaks of a mostly submerged volcanic mountain range. In the surrounding marine sanctuary, cool waters from the North Pacific mix with the warm Northern Equatorial Current. This nutrient- and plankton-rich convergence attracts a diverse array of sea life—and the protection mandated by the sanctuary help to sustain an unusually healthy marine ecosystem. In this photograph, more than a thousand top predators, including dusky sharks (Carcharhinus obscurus), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), and Galåpagos sharks (Carcharhinus galapagensis) work in unison to round up a shared meal of chub and other baitfish.

It’s a quick–if destructive and banned—way to clear the field and return some of the crop’s nutrients to the soil in preparation for the next season’s planting. The practice is also a boon to local birds. As insects flee the flames, birds like these black drongos (Dicrurus macrocercus) swoop in to take advantage of the bounty.

These beauties may appear to be single-celled organisms viewed under a microscope, but you’re actually looking at a bucket filled with dozens of by-the-wind sailors (Velella velella). Each sailor— measuring up to three inches long—is a colony of individual polyps that feed on plankton, reproduce, and defend the colony. These close relatives of jellyfish float on the surface of the ocean, their translucent triangular sails providing mobility. But like other sailors, they travel at the mercy of the wind, and occasionally end up stranded en masse along Pacific Coast beaches.

As if to compete with the brilliance of the night sky, a towering termite mound puts on its own light show above the subdued landscape of Western Brazil. This effect is produced by one of the mound’s residents: larvae of the Brazilian click beetle (Pyrearinus termitilluminans). While the termites construct the mound, click beetles burrow into the porous earthen structure and lay their eggs inside. Like fireflies, click beetle larvae produce their characteristic green glow via a chemical reaction within their tissues. Rather than using the light to attract a mate, however, the larvae use their glow to attract prey: winged termites they’ll catch and eat as the insects emerge from the mound during the first weeks of the rainy season.

Since the 1960s, North American populations of snow geese (Chen caerulescens) have exploded an estimated thirteen-fold, in part because of the sprawling fields of grain that have cropped up along their migration route over the past 60 years. In Canada, the species has been officially declared overabundant, largely due to its impact on sensitive Arctic habitats. Descending in vast flocks, the geese leave a wake of mowed-down plants and exposed ground that can take decades to recover. The results can be devastating for other species, such as the endangered rufa red knot (Calidris canutus rufa), that rely on this vegetation for foraging and nesting habitat.

At the Hetaoping Research and Conservation Center in China’s Wolong Reserve, captive-bred giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) have been raised with the hope of one day reintroducing them to the wild. To prevent young pandas from imprinting on and becoming attached to their human caregivers, the center’s staff wear costumes that mimic the animals’ characteristic black and white pattern. That pattern, which scientists have puzzled over for decades, is now thought to be an evolutionary compromise that allows pandas to blend into both snowy backgrounds in the winter and shadowy forests in the summer.

Photographer Franco Banfi and his fellow divers were following this pod of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) when the giants suddenly seemed to fall into a vertical slumber. This phenomenon was first studied in 2008, when a team of biologists from the UK and Japan inadvertently drifted into a group of non-responsive sperm whales floating just below the surface. Baffled by the behavior, the scientists analyzed data from tagged whales and discovered that these massive marine mammals spend about 7 percent of their time taking short (6- to 24-minute) rests in this shallow vertical position. Scientists think these brief naps may, in fact, be the only time the whales sleep.

You don't need much to get a lot Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has launched the all new Fiat Tipo hatchback and its sedan sibling to the South African market following the vehicle’s highly successful European debut. The launch marks the Fiat’s return to the medium-compact segment with an offering that appeals directly to the heart of the market, thanks to a simple but comprehensive range that meets customer needs. The Tipo family’s success is based on a value proposition combined with best-in-class passenger and luggage space, as well as versatility. Thanks in part to these characteristics, the Tipo family has been awarded a string of accolades, the latest of which is the prestigious Autobest “Best Buy Car 2016” award, chosen by a jury of 26 journalists from the most authoritative European car magazines. This award underlines the model’s design, quality, comfort and versatility and rewards an exceptional offering that is squarely focused on value for money, a crucial concept in Fiat’s functional family strategy, summed up in the slogan “You don’t need much to get a lot”. The Fiat Tipo range shares the same values but each have unique personalities as diverse as their respective target audiences, from families and couples to young people or professionals. The Tipo family was developed around the brief “Skills, no frills” and combines the brand’s historic concepts of functionality, simplicity and personality in an extraordinary value-for-money offering. Personality-wise, the Fiat Tipo projects a dynamic style and a strong character in all versions with simple choices provided to the customer resulting in a range of engines and trim levels appealing directly to the heart of the market. Functionality, a hallmark of Fiat for more than 80 years, has contributed to a multitude of highly successful models.

The Fiat Tipo hatchback measures 4.37m in length, 1.79m in width and stands 1.50m high, while the sedan measures 4.53m in length, the width and height mirrors the dimensions of the hatchback. The new car features a suspension layout designed for dynamic driving, brilliant road-holding and outstanding comfort; independent McPherson struts on the front axle and an interconnected torque beam on the rear. The two layouts are optimised to reduce weight and contribute to improved fuel efficiency, without compromising the dynamic driving experience. Locally two body styles, three trim levels, three engines and three transmission types will be available at launch. The sedan will be available in the POP or EASY versions whilst the hatchback will be available in the POP, EASY or LOUNGE configurations. The engine range offers one diesel and two petrol derivatives that target the heart of the 70 to 81 kW market. The transmissions can be 5 or 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission depending on the engine. Emissions range between 117g/km and 146g/km of CO2. Fuel consumption ranges from 3.3l/100 km.

It Lives, It Breathes And You’re Going To Want One Get your thesauruses out, gentlemen, because the new Alfa Giulia deserves every praiseworthy adjective you can come up with... By: James Siddall

L

et me tell you a story about Alfa Romeos. Now even as a car-crazy kid Alfa never really registered on my automotive radar. Except perhaps when hearing those apocryphal tales relating to rust and disintegration, and these cars’ need for long rests in between intoxicating outings. And then came my Damascene moment (complete with heavenly choir). You see, in 2011 Alfa SA lent me a longterm (six months) Giulietta 1.4 MultiAir Distinctive, and the love affair was instantly consummated. I was living in Bloemfontein for a season then, and that Alfa was roped into intercity trips to Durban, taken (gently) on farm roads, and generally called on to swoop and crackle down serpentine twisties. And even when I had other, ostensibly pricier and more prestigious test cars in my garage at the time, it would be the Giulietta that would so often get fired up. But now – at the risk of being fickle – it’s the new Giulia to which I pledge my automotive heart. I recently spent a day in the Western Cape on the intensive media launch of these Italians, and can confirm that they eclipse any hype you might have heard about them. The headline grabber, obviously, is the Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde (QV). And so it should be. It’s a bona fide BMW M3 rival – but with soul and passion, and it almost seems, well, alive. A 2.9-litre bi-turbo V6 provides prodigious firepower with 375kW at a vocal 6 500pm – and, boy, does this engine sound unearthly and intoxicating at full chat. Torque is pegged at 600Nm at 2 500rpm, while zero-to-100km/h comes up in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 307km/h. We but briefly drove these QV models on the private racetrack next to the Franschhoek Motor Museum and they proved exhilarating... and yet tractable and controllable, too. I want one desperately.

Further down the range lies a trio of more pedestrian Giulias – although “pedestrian” seems a cruel word for these D segment sedans that, frankly, make much of the competition seem as exciting as a microwave meal. All three derivatives – Base, Super, and Stile, which denotes varying levels of spec – use the same two-litre turbo’d powerplant good for 147kW at 5 000rpm, and 330Nm from as low at 1 750rpm. As with the QV, these three Giulias use an eightspeed auto. Zero to 100km/h comes up in 6.6 seconds, topping out 235km/h. Claimed fuel consumption is six litres per 100km in the combined cycle, and 8.2 for the QV. But perhaps the biggest surprise above the fact that the QV is an incendiary ball of heritage, performance, and soul, is that the three lesser Base, Super, and Stile versions are so engaging and practical. Comfortable too. After a long morning I managed to doze off in the capacious backseat of a Giulia being piloted along mountain roads by a colleague. I also inspected the interiors with a figurative microscope, and besides being gloriously styled, they scored close to 10 on the solidity and build quality stakes. Those schadenfreude-y old tales of ancient Alfas disintegrating have been comprehensively exorcised by this new breed of Romeo. Now I try to avoid quoting car manufacturers’ press releases and marketing hype, but I especially like the Alfa people, and I like what they’re doing with Alfa.

We Will 'Rok You! The new, V6 turbodiesel version of VW's much-loved Amarok is so good that it blurs the line between a bakkie and a luxury SUV, writes JAMES SIDDALL...

W

hen VW launched its Amarok some seven years ago, the critics and pessimists had a field day. Indeed, many were the dark predictions that its two-litre turbodiesel would fare poorly in the reliability and longevity stakes. Those nay-sayers were, of course, proven wrong, and today there's no shortage of Amaroks having racked up interstellar, trouble-free mileage. But while that two-litre turbodiesel pushes out up to 132kW – a frankly phenomenal figure! – many craved yet more muscle, asking why VW didn't avail themselves of that fine three-litre V6 turbodiesel that does duty in other of its products. Well, they got their wish in the guise of a three-litre V6 Amarok making 165kW from 3 000 to 4 500rpm, and 550Nm of torque from 1 400 to 1 750 rpm. With an overboost, the power output is increased to 180kW, and torque to 580Nm for about 10 seconds, especially handy when overtaking. And for a double-cab bakkie, the V6 'Rok's performance is galvanising. Figure on a zero-to-100km/h time of just eight seconds – which rather makes everything else in its segment seem, well, a little tardy – and a top trot of 193km/h. Power is put down via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the entire package is so refined as to make this machine a viable

alternative to a luxury SUV – with the added benefit of a load bin. Average fuel consumption is pegged at nine litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, and with a fuel tank capacity of 80 litres, its range is outstanding. But in fact the whole 'Rok range has been revised, and from the outside the new Amarok distinguishes itself from the previous model by a redesigned front bumper and radiator grille incorporating front fog lights, new alloy wheels, and a third brake light with LED technology. Aligned with the latest Volkswagen DNA seen in the new Caddy, Transporter and forthcoming Crafter, horizontal lines dominate the front of the new model, with much cleaner-looking, angled folds and edges. In a nutshell, the big 'Rok looks slicker, and more muscular than ever, while its inherent, familiar shape has aged exceptionally well. Inside the cabin the changes are more noticeable, with an all-new dashboard design which incorporates VW's modular infotainment system with touchscreen radio, App-Connect, Bluetooth, and USB interface (iPod/iPhone compatible). It's also one safe place to be, should the unthinkable happen. Indeed, an impressive list of safety equipment comes as standard on every new Amarok, including four airbags, Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), and Volkswagen’s award-winning Automatic Post-Collision Braking System which can reduce the chance or severity of a secondary accident in the event of a collision. The Amarok range's equipment levels and nomenclature have also been reworked a little. For instance, the familiar Trendline equipment trim level has been replaced with the Comfortline equipment trim level, resulting in additional standard features, while Highline Plus has been added to the model line-up for discerning customers. Meanwhile, Extreme replaces Ultimate as the top-end derivative in the Amarok model line-up. Extreme will be available with an option of 4MOTION automatic 2.0 BiTDI with 132kW or 3.0 TDI V6 with the 165kW engine.

And speaking of mechanical changes, well, bar the advent of the simply awesome new V6 model, the 'Rok remains essentially the same under the skin. The entry-level model is the 2.0 TDI with 103kW with six-speed manual transmission and an option of permanent 4MOTION fourwheel and two-wheel drive systems. Also carried over from the previous model is the tried and tested 2.0 BiTDi delivering 132kW. This engine is offered with six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions. Meanwhile, fortunate buyers have an option of the selectable 4MOTION on the derivatives with manual transmission, and permanent 4MOTION four-wheel drive system on derivatives with automatic transmission. The new model retains the previous Amarok’s generous dimensions: it measures 5.25m long, 2.23m wide and 1.83m high. Its load area continues to measure 2.52m2, meaning it can accommodate a Euro pallet sideways. Handy indeed. And while even the entry-level models turn in impressive performance – and boast brilliant off-road ability in 4MOTION guise – it's the V6 Amarok that so fundamentally and comprehensively rewrites the rule book for double cabs. Indeed, as we pointed out it's a compelling, convincing and downright covetable alternative to a luxury SUV, and it richly deserves every superlative that has been heaped on it. The 12-model Amarok range comes standard with a threeyear/100 000 km manufacturer's warranty, five-year/90 000 km Automotion Service Plan, and six-year anti-corrosion warranty. The service interval is at 15 000 km.

The perfect holiday destination – Plettenberg Bay Located along the coastal area of the Garden Route in the Western Cape area of South Africa, Plettenberg Bay may be the perfect holiday destination

P

lettenberg Bay is the ideal destination for young and old, families and couples, local and international guests. Visitors return to Plett time again to unwind, or to live it up. It is the perfect, all-year round destination with amazing summers to moderate winters. Sunshine can be found in abundance in this natural treasure.

surfing and bodyboarding spots for the more adventurous. Plett has six premier “Blue Flag” status beaches. The Plett region offers visitors truly spectacular and uniquely diverse nature experiences. The region encompasses 5 different biospheres, forests, fynbos, wetlands, mountains and the coastal region, each with its own abundant offerings.

SCENIC BEACHES

FYNBOS AND FLORA

The scenery is perhaps the greatest highlight of all, and the sweeping vistas of pristine lagoons and beaches can’t easily be beaten anywhere else along the Garden Route. There are six internationally recognized Blue Flag beaches, each with its own personality, along the town’s 20 kilometres of picturesque Indian Ocean coastline. Throughout the year, you’ll find beachgoers of all ages soaking up the sun and enjoying the many outdoor activities you’ll find in Plett. Lounging in the soft, warm sand is only the beginning. Surfing, skimboarding and bodyboarding are popular among locals and visitors. With up to 12-foot waves, the beaches along Plett’s coastline are home to some of the best waves in South Africa. There are many different beaches to choose from in Plett. Some have lagoon areas for young children and others are hot

The small Cape Floral Kingdom between Cape Town and along the Garden Route contains 8500 different flowering plants. This is more than is found in the entire Northern hemisphere. There are a great many wild proteas and the list of geophytes that can be seen in the area is extensive.

INDIGENOUS FORESTS Between 1777 and 1939 much of Plett’s indigenous forests were exploited in the timber trade. Although it is the largest tract of natural forest in South Africa, only 65000 hectare of the original forest remains today. The Outeniqua yellowwood is a true forest giant reaching over 50 metres in height. Other magnificent specimens are the ironwood and stinkwood trees. Trees in our forests are often numbered to identify species.

Our forests harbour many species of ferns including the seven week fern which is prolific in the Tsitsikamma region. Colourful lichens on rocks and tree trunks and many species of mushrooms can also be found.

BIRDS AND LAND ANIMALS More than 260 species of birds have been sighted in this area with its unique four habitats, namely the forests, fynbos, wetlands and the coastal region making this area a birdwatchers paradise. Special birds include the Knysna Loerie, Narina Trogan (both found in indigenous forests), the African Black Oystercatcher (coastal), and the Orangebreasted sunbird (fynbos). Common mammals that may be spotted include the bushpig, dassie, caracal. genet, baboon, vervet monkey, blue duiker, bushbuck, grysbok, leopard, mongoose and the Cape clawless otter. The most common species of reptiles include the dwarf chameleon, boomslang, night adder and puff adder. Rare and unique insects can also be found here. The humble silver-spotted caterpillar unique to the coastal belt of the Southern Cape helped lay the foundations of a century-old church at The Crags near Plett.

MARINE LIFE AND REEFS More than 100 species of fish are known to occur along this coast. Some of the finest soft coral reefs in the world are found here with sponges, starfish and many shellfish including our unique Pansy shell. Common marine mammals are dolphins, whales and seals. During winter months, the spectacular Southern Right Whales, Humpback Whales and occasionally Orca Whales take up residence in the bay when they arrive up from the southern oceans to calve.

NATIONAL PARKS AND NATURE RESERVES There are an abundance of National Parks, Nature Reserves and Game Reserves in the Cape Garden Route and especially so in Plett. The most famous of all are the Tsitsikamma National Park and the Robberg Nature Reserve, the latter being earmarked as a world heritage site. Where the booming breakers of the Indian Ocean relentlessly pound rocky shores, where temperate high forest and fynbos roll down to the sea in an unspoilt verdant carpet, where ancient rivers

carve their paths to the ocean down rocky ravines. This, “the place of much water”, is the Tsitsikamma National Park. Tsitsikamma National Park stretches 65kms along the coast from Natures Valley to Oubosstrand with the heartland of the park stretching some 5 km to sea, protecting a wonderland of intertidal life, reef and deep-sea fish. Dolphins frolic in the breakers, surfing and playing for the sheer joy of life and the gentle giant of the ocean, the southern right whale visits here, coming inshore to breed. The most important of the nature reserves is Robberg Nature Reserve, offering great walking and hiking trails and is an excellent view site for cliff based whales and dolphins sightings. There are three circular walks of various lengths, caves, and extensive information about Robberg’s geology, archaeology and existing marine life.

ACTIVITIES AND ACCOMMODATION Besides these world class surroundings, Plett offers a startling – and surprising – array of activities and accommodation. In order to get through it all – swimming with seals, marine safaris, wine routes, big five game viewing, wildlife sanctuaries and experiences, birding, cycling, hiking, paddling the river – a minimum stay of five nights is highly recommended. Accommodation in Plett, and in its forested fringes, is superlative – from the 5 and 4 Star hotels, boutique guest houses and bed & breakfasts to self-catering homes and apartments as well as back-packers.

ACCOLADES AND AWARDS Plettenberg Bay was named a winner in the 2015 and 2016 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice™ Awards for Destinations. “This town is a real gem, and we recommend it thoroughly for a stop on the Garden Route.”– Review by TripAdvisor traveler africatravel00 Plettenberg Bay has been nominated for the 7th year running as Africa’s Top Beach Destination in the 2016 World Travel Awards. Plettenberg Bay has made it onto the Daily Telegraph’s “Top 25 reasons to visit South Africa” list. In at number 16 in a list of 25, the UK newspaper declared that “some of the best are found in Plettenberg Bay, in the Western Cape, along the popular Garden Route.”

In one of the most competitive line-ups in the 21 year history of the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirts Awards, a Cabernet Franc from Nelson Estate in Paarl took the Grand Prix Trophy, the show’s top accolade. The Lisha Nelson Cabernet Franc 2014 achieved a stunning 99pt score in the 100pt scoring system used by the predominantly foreign judging panel. This year’s Michelangelo Awards saw 28 judges from 23 countries judging 1 633 entries for South Africa’s leading international wine show. The 2017 Michelangelo Awards ceremony took place in Cape Town on 29 September. Lorraine Immelman, founder and CEO of the Michelangelo Awards says that the judges were unanimous in their view that South Africa was making the finest wines in its history, complemented by a diverse and exciting component of top quality spirits. “This year’s judges included British Masters of Wine, sommeliers, educators, spirits experts and influential journalists from Europe, the Far East and the Americas, some of whom have judged on numerous Michelangelo Awards panels in the past,” says Immelman. “The quality of wines are at a noticeable all-time high, with the brandies and other spirits termed world-class in terms of distillation technique and diversity of flavour.” Out of the 1633 entries for this year’s competition, the judges handed out 21 trophies, 20 Platinum medals, 118 Double Gold medals, 275 Gold medals and 197 Silver medals. “The high number of gold medals certainly reflects the judges’ comments and the scores which were returned this year. For a Michelangelo entry to be awarded a gold medal, it needs at least 89 points, and keeping in mind that we award only the approximate one third of entries, it explains where the majority of the points lay this year.” The wine category with the most entries was the one for Red Blends, which included Bordeaux as well as Cape Blends, namely 225. Here three Platinum medals were awarded with 25 Double Gold medals and 18 Golds. In the Cabernet Sauvignon section, 115 entries were received and awarded with two Platinum, eight Double Gold and 24 Gold medals. The Shiraz category put in a strong showing with 156 entries in which the judges awarded ten Double Gold, two Platinum and 31 Gold medals. The highest entries received for White wines was for Sauvignon Blanc, which received 176 entries. In this class only two Double Gold medals were awarded, and ten Gold medals. Some 123 Chenin Blancs were entered and awarded one Platinum medal, 11 Double Gold medals and 29 Gold medals. True to South Africa’s reputation, natural sweet and fortified wines showed strongly. A total of six Platinum medals and 14 Double Gold medals were awarded out of 75 entries. As far as individual producers are concerned, the KWV put in a formidable performance with one Platinum, seven Double Gold and 10 Gold medals. Double Golds for wines were awarded to Roodeberg Dr Charles Niehaus Red Blend 2014, Mentors Cabernet Sauvignon Darling 2014, Mentors Orchestra Bordeaux Blend 2014, Classic Collection Cape Tawny and Classic Selection Cape Full Cream. The Platinum medal went to KWV’s Wild Africa Cream Liqueur. Double Golds were also awarded to Imoya 3 Year Chenin Blanc/Colombar Brandy and KWV Ponchos Coffee Liqueur.

says Immelman. This year, for example, the competition has embraced the world’s increasing dependence on technology to bring a world first to wine competitions. “Using various experts in the field of digital marketing, Michelangelo has embarked on a ground-breaking project that, as far as we know - is a world first,” she says. “From this year the coveted Michelangelo awards stickers, from silver and gold to double gold and platinum, all the way up to trophy award stickers - will carry a QR code. Once scanned on the smartphone of the retail, restaurant or hotel customer, the code will allow access to succinct and varied information on the product, including tasting notes and a guide as to where the specific product can be purchased and/or ordered. Data on the major Michelangelo sponsors – Airlink, Tsogo Sun and Multi-Color Corporation – will also be accessible. “Wine is made in the vineyard and spirits crafted in the potstill,” says Immelman. “But it is up to events such as Michelangelo to embrace innovation and technology to ensure consumers and the various producers who enter the competition benefit from the exposure and marketing initiatives which we have embarked on.” The quality and standard of a competition such as the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards is often reflected by the standard of sponsors and associates joining forces to bolster the event. And this year two of the leading brands in the South African hospitality industry - Tsogo Sun and Airlink – have partnered with Michelangelo to ensure the wines and spirits entered, as well as the ethos of Michelangelo, are promoted to travellers, tourists and the wine and spirits loving public in general. “Together with Airlink and Tsogo Sun, Michelangelo will be in a position to literally spread its wings and open doors throughout South and southern Africa,” says Immelman. “This sponsorship will see wines entered into Michelangelo automatically selected for on-board service on Airlink. Tsogo Sun is one of the South African hospitality industry’s largest wine purchasers, exposing hundreds of thousands of people to its wine offering through 14 entertainment destinations and over 100 hotels. As a Michelangelo sponsor, Tsogo Sun will use its extensive marketing channels to promote the competition as well as the participating producers.”

During the Michelangelo Awards Ceremony, Immelman emphasised the importance of finding added ways of benefitting wine and spirits producers entering the event. For her, it is about adding value through Michelangelo. “Our competition has always been committed to ensuring that producers entering the competition and the people who follow the lauded wines and spirits, find value in the Michelangelo brand,”

W

hat is your absolute favourite film of all time? The one that opened your eyes, tugged at your heartstring and made your soul leap with joy; you were born in the golden age of cinema? Is there a stack of fantastic features your like-minded friends and family have been raving about, which you’re sad to admit you haven’t seen YET? You now have the opportunity to tick off all the films you still need to watch – or enjoy again – before it’s time to kick the bucket! MultiChoice and M-Net have created yet another exciting movies pop-up channel as a special treat to DStv Premium customers. Between Thursday 30 October and 2 December the M-Net Movies Bucket List pop-up channel will count down 100 popular and iconic Hollywood movies to see before you die. This selection of fine films and all-time favourites will be showcased on DStv’s channel 109 with the first of the 100 movies scheduled for just after 18:00 on Thursday 30 October. Thereafter, the countdown will continue all the way to the number 1 main attraction on Saturday 2 December at 20:30 CAT.

Depending on the duration and age-restrictions of these films, the daily countdown will kick off on weekdays at approximately 18:00 and on weekends just before or after 16:00 CAT. To get a nod for the coveted M-Net Movies Bucket List, compiled by an expert team of film fanatics, a movie had to be entrenched in popular culture, define an era, shift mediums, uproot the status quo, delight a variety of audiences, impress critics worldwide and be able to reignite your love for movies. “Our themed pop-up channels such as the Star Wars, Harry Potter, Fast & Furious and James Bond channels have been huge hits and we promised to continue curating unique experiences for our M-Net Movies audiences,” says MultiChoice Namibia General Manager Roger Gertze. “With the M-Net Movie Bucket List we’re taking the pop-up concept to the next level. Never before have viewers been able to see so many magnificent game-changing movies in one place over such a short time.” While M-Net Movies will share the titles from #100 to #11 on its programming schedules, the Top 10 films on the list will

be a top secret. This means that the final films on the M-Net Movies Bucket List will only be revealed to DStv customers on the day of the screening, so you will have to be sure to tune in to channel 109 on the day it airs. “Keeping hush about these titles just adds to the excitement of this once-in-a-lifetime movie compilation. We all have our own bucket lists based on our own taste and we believe it will be great fun for movie fans to compare notes and see whether their favourites have made it onto the pop-up channel.” On top of the 100 must-see movies in your lifetime modernday motion pictures, M-Net Movies will also fuel film fandom with the M-Net Movies Bucket List Bonus Features as well as a fabulous viewers competition. To win big in the M-Net Bucket List viewer’s competition you have to curate your own the Top 10 movie list at mnet.tv/bucketlist. The competition closes on 30 November before the Top 10 hits your screens. The Bucket List Bonus features will comprise additional classics which can’t be ignored but which will appeal to niche audiences. Among these titles are vintage silver screen darlings that were goundbreaking at their time, like Mary Poppins, Casablanca and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The M-Net Movies Bucket List schedule (prior to the Top 10) will be published at www.mnet.tv you can also consult the EPG (Electronic Programming Guide) or catch up on the films you’ve missed on Dstv Catch Up Plus. If the day’s countdown doesn’t start at exactly 18:00 or 16:00 CAT M-Net will communicate start times on social media https://www.facebook.com/MNet. So which of your films will be on the M-Net Movies Bucket List? Start guessing and sharing your thoughts. Join us on @MNet on Twitter #MMBucketList and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MNet

More than a footprint in Namibia – 10 years of steps for children In 2006 the Hamburg benefactor Michael Hoppe took his first step in Namibia and started a small project in Okakarara with a pre-school and a soup kitchen. 30 boys and girls were taught by two teachers and received a breakfast and a warm lunch because one can learn better with a full stomach. After 10 years of successful project work, the steps for children foundation now supports over 1300 children daily. An African saying goes: “Every child is a sign of hope for this world.” It is therefore even more important to protect children, to strengthen them and to teach them. So that they themselves can experience that change is possible and take their life in their own hands. steps for children stands by the side of the children and families who are influenced by poverty and HIV/Aids, looks after the often traumatized children in nurseries, kindergartens and pre-schools and prepares them for school. The vision of Dr. Michael Hoppe, the founder of the German foundation “steps for children” goes even further: the projects should become independent of donations. Since the start in 2006 of the first project in Okakrara, near the Waterberg, a lot has changed: the children who went to the steps for children pre-school at the beginning are now almost adult: Clenda, Ndapena and Olivia are about to finish in the secondary school. They have developed into confident young women and show that care, attention and continuity can open doors – thanks to the support from the guardian angel programme of steps for children. Over 100 guardian angel children are now supported by the foundation in afternoon coaching during their school careers. With success – for these children have better school results than the average of their classmates. The community in Okakarara has also changed in the last 10 years and steps for children has contributed significantly to this. The concept of the foundation joins the social measures with small businesses. In Okakarara the sewing room was in 2006 the first income-generating subproject. Today two guesthouses, vegetable growing on 2 hectares of land and an internet-café belong to the project as well. The proceeds of these small businesses already finance part of the social measures. A further aim of the foundation is to reduce the high unemployment rate. With the 20 jobs in the field of education and in the associated small businesses steps for children has become one of the biggest employers in Okakarara. The employees themselves each feed up to 10 further family members. The training that employees in the project receive also paves the way for alternative jobs. Steps for children has already left behind more than a footprint in Namibia. Indeed the foundation would like to reach even more people, especially children who one day can confidently say: “With steps I have changed my life.”

The steps for children foundation The steps for children foundation works actively with needy children and young people, Aids-orphans and families affected by HIV/Aids. With pre-schools, soup kitchens, after-school coaching and other offers, they get the chance to lead their lives away from poverty and hopelessness. The first project started in Okakarara in 2006 with 30 children. Today, together with Namibian partner projects, more than 1300 children are provided with balanced nutrition and education. The special thing about steps for children is the income-generating measures. These are commercial small businesses such as carpentry workshops, sewing rooms, guest-houses, vegetable cultivation and computer schools that are financially independent and generate a contribution to the social projects. In this way the projects can in the long term become independent of donations and development help. The high unemployment rate of up to 85% in the catchment areas of the projects, the so-called informal settlements, will be reduced by work and education places. A strong partner for the future of children – Air Namibia On its 10th anniversary steps for children has found in Air Namibia an important new partner. The state airline applies itself for disadvantaged people in its own land and so takes its social responsibilities seriously. Dr. Michael Hoppe: “We are very pleased with the multi-facetted support of Air Namibia and I notice in all our meetings and combined activities that for their staff it lies close to their hearts to work constructively for a change in the living conditions of their fellow men.

TIP #6 | How Lodge owners and Hoteliers overcome the Marketing Challenges with ever changing Technology, Trends and Consumer Behaviour Marketing is more than a Full Time Job Marketing can seem like a daunting task to independent property owners, and it is often shelved in favour of other more immediate jobs like looking after guests and the daily running of the business. This is a grave mistake, as marketing is crucial for the continued success and future growth of your business. But how to get to a holistic marketing strategy and execution thereof, to gain more direct bookings, improve your sales mix, increase your occupancy and get the recognition your property deserves when not having the needed resources or talents and experience available? Marketing is a minefield with numerous tasks, dozens of new technology and angles of attack. Here are some of the effective measures that can ensure you hit your marketing targets.

How to cope with ever new Technology? Technology is the new leveller of the playing field. Bigger companies have bigger advertising budgets, more skilled people and greater digital reach, but that doesn’t mean that smaller and independent properties can’t get a larger bite

87

NOVEMBER 2017 | FLAMINGO

MARKETING

of the apple. New technological innovations have made for more competitive market positions by early adopters. An example of this is the 360 degree Virtual Tour, powered by Google Street View Trusted for Hotels. By adding this very new technology to the digital presence, Lodges, Guesthouses, Hotels but also Tour Operators can significantly improve their market share.

Do small Lodges need a Property Management System? Really? Independent property owners often manage their bookings in a paper diary, in Excel or on the Outlook Calendar. Others run a Property Management System. But do smaller properties of 4-12 rooms really need a PMS? Is it not too complex and provides a lot of features and functions not needed in such small operations? On the other side, a streamlined rate, inventory and reservations management can have extremely beneficial effects for marketing and distribution. A perfectly configured cloud based platform would allow you to market your room in any number of ways. However it also needs to function while offline and it needs to be fully integrated into the digital presence, Facebook, local tour operators, DMCs, Google Hotel, online travel agents, meta engines and GDS without adding complexity and cost.

Is eMail Marketing still working? eMail sounds antiquated to some people, but it remains an intrinsic weapon in the hoteliers and tour operators marketing arsenal. A highly personalised email journey is still a vital part of your marketing mix, as email lists are compiled by people who have registered their interest in your property, or stayed there already. It is a cost effective way of reaching an already interested audience. Whether your Guests, prospects or Tour Operators or DMCs.

Why to Stop Print Advertizing and shift to Digital Marketing Advertising and direct marketing are still the bread and butter of digital marketing. There are countless ways to utilise these powerful tools, each with its different cost. And, you can optimize them daily, tweak them for a better performance, or shut them down if they don’t seem to work. But more importantly, for the first time you can analyze every cent spent and its return. Something impossible in Print.

andBeyond Sandibe Okavango Delta Lodge – A Glorious Sense Of Place When a lodge is extraordinary because of what it is as much as where it is, that’s the very best collaboration that nature can offer. You’ll find that at andBeyond’s Sandibe Okavango Delta Lodge. Edited by Anne Schauffer Photographs supplied by andBeyond

T

he Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it’s only fitting that architecture should be designed in praise of, yet subject to, this breathtaking setting. Sandibe Okavango Delta Lodge sits quietly on a 22,500 hectare private concession in the Delta - on the edge of the Delta’s permanent waterways, so always remains accessible for game drives and walks - and has exclusive traversing rights over a vast stretch of land adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve. Moremi is legendary worldwide for its diversity and density of game, and the lodge offers some of the most exceptional wildlife sightings in the Delta, which guests can enjoy on day and night safaris, as well as bush walks. Welcome to extraordinary architecture, sensational African vistas, and birds and wildlife to stir the blood.

The Lodge is one with the landscape, never competing, always blending and bending with the environment - the architect was Nick Plewman and the interior design team, FoxBrowne Creative. Behind the Lodge are the floodplains which stretch as far as the eye can see, and provide the perfect habitat for a staggering variety of wildlife. The Lodge is sheltered by nature, with a forest canopy of wild palms and fig trees, while behind it, a channel of cool water runs directly in front of the 12 elegant air-conditioned guest suites with private plunge pools and outdoor showers. Views of the Delta from your suite are legendary. The guest areas of the Lodge are inspired by the secretive Pangolin, with a wooden skin of shingles and timber which mirrors the pangolins’ body armour of overlapping scales. Organic and handmade, the Lodge blends magnificently into the Delta and surrounds, every element of it exquisitely crafted…from the curved wooden roof which creates an immense sense of scale, to the interactive kitchen which teases guests with aromas at mealtimes. The interiors are an authentic celebration of the Delta, with shades and shapes of copper, wood and crafts from the region and the people. Every element has been mindfully crafted for a guest’s maximum enjoyment of both the structures and the environment.

For wildlife lovers, birders, photographers, adventurers and honeymooners, Sandibe, the Delta and Moremi Game Reserve has a wealth of surprises for you. The Lodge offers morning & evening game drives; bush walks; scenic helicopter flights; and game includes, among others, the endangered African wild dog, lion, elephant, semi-aquatic red lechwe antelope, hippo, and giraffe. From every which vantage point, Sandibe opens up to the Delta, to the environment and the never-ending views. Whether you’re relishing a meal, sipping sundowners, enjoying a massage or sharing stories around an African fire in the boma, you’ll be in touch with nature. This won’t be like any other experience you’ve had, in any other lodge you’ve visited…so be prepared for another side of Africa, luxurious, languid and simply extraordinary.

IT’S A WAY OF LIFE:

Clip-clopping donkey carts of rural Namibia

W

hile driving southwards along the main road from Windhoek, you suddenly spot something in the periphery of your vision. Can it be? You slow down and take another look at the gravel track running parallel to the tarred road. Yes, you are not mistaken. Hurtling along – at donkey speed – is a team of clip-clopping donkeys pulling a customised cart and its passengers, on their way to visit neighbours, to transport wares or making their way home. This will be the first of many of the colourful donkey carts you will see as you explore the countryside. Welcome to Namibia!

T

he many gravel roads that traverse rural Namibia are arteries in the vast country, ideal for this transport of old that has survived through the centuries, providing a vital form of affordable non-motorised transportation for local inhabitants and for carrying essentials such as firewood and water. Donkey carts convey people from village to village - and to wells and clinics, and transport children to/from school – or to the junction of main roads from where they are collected by car.

On the DUSTY ROADS of the Namibian interior, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, the DONKEY CART is often the most common form of transport...

D

onkey carts are common in the communal areas from southern to northern, and eastern to western Namibia as they wind their way to their destinations at a pace appropriate for rural Africa. And, with the continual rise in fuel prices and the high cost of motor vehicles, people are increasingly depending on donkey carts for transport. The two-wheeled ‘4x4s’ of the Namibian countryside are often emblazoned with car names like ‘Toyota’, ‘Ford’, ‘Opel’ and even ‘Mercedes Benz’ and are drawn by teams of up to six donkeys (or sometimes horses or mules). Humorous inscriptions such as ‘Take me home’, ‘Lady’s man’, ‘Barjero - It’s a way of life’ and ‘The king of the road’ are occasionally added. Some of these valuable carts even proudly bear number plates. The donkeys are also given amusing names like ‘Vaaljapie’ (the name of a vintage tractor) and ‘Sondernaam’ (No Name). Originally custom-made, donkey carts are now innovative modes of transport constructed with recycled parts from the scrapyard. These include the tyres, which are repaired with plastic bags when they can no longer hold air in the usual way, and reflectors, so that the carts can be seen at night.

Where did the donkey cart originate?

W

here did the donkey cart originate? You may well ask. First came the donkeys. Like horses, they are not indigenous to southern Africa. The first shipment of mules and donkeys is reported to have arrived at the Cape in 1656. Donkeys were gradually introduced into what is now southern Namibia in small numbers as settlers began to cross over the Orange/Gariep River from the latter part of the 18th century. Towards the end of the 19th century, German settlers brought in donkeys to breed mules for use in the diamond fields and for military purposes.

uring the depression years following World War I, an influx of Afrikaner farmers travelling from South Africa entered the country in their twoor four-wheeled wooden donkey carts. The ox-wagon was soon replaced by the relatively speedy ‘karretjie’ as the main means of transport. In later years, as cars gained popularity, many of the donkey carts were made using remnants of old cars, using the ‘bak’ or rear part of the car, rear axles and wheels.

F

king of the road

rom the 1920s until the 1940s donkey carts were the main form of transport on the farms. When the karakul market started to peak in the 1940s and many farmers were able to purchase their first cars, their donkey carts were passed on to the workers and made their way into the communal areas. By the mid-20th century the donkey cart had become a popular form of transport – and a way of life in rural Namibia.

Donkeys

A

lthough you may think that mini-bus taxis, buses and bakkies (pick-up trucks) are the modern means of transport in an ever-expanding Africa, the donkey cart still reigns supreme in many parts of Namibia. While the inhabitants of the north-central regions of Namibia mostly use donkeys to plough their fields or to transport large water containers and wood, and the Himba use donkeys as pack animals, the Nama and Damara of southern and western Namibia have wholeheartedly embraced the donkey cart culture.

A

n intriguing – and often unexpected sight, the donkey cart is a quintessential part of the Namibian journey. This is especially so on the auxiliary roads in the hinterland. Just when you begin to think yours is the only vehicle for miles around, a donkey cart will appear on the horizon.

T

hese are the times to slow down to avoid enveloping its occupants in clouds of dust, wave and become acquainted with the friendly people of Namibia. You can be sure they will be waving and smiling back, and will always have time for small talk.

T

he donkey descended from the African wild ass and was domesticated about five thousand years ago in Egypt or Mesopotamia. From there, it spread around the world to be used for transport and as a pack and draft animal. Donkeys were imported into South Africa at the time of the first Dutch settlers in the mid-1600s when the Cape of Good Hope became a reprovisioning station for the ships rounding the tip of Africa on their journeys to the East. The hardy Equids were introduced as pack and draft animals, often to breed mules (a hybrid bred from a female horse and male donkey), which were more in demand for their superior strength, stronger hooves and surefootedness. Donkeys are now common residents of the Namibian countryside. They are even used at some lodges like Gondwana’s Canyon Village to transport guests’ luggage to the rooms, adding a touch of local colour. by Mannfred Goldbeck

INVESTMENT

Do South African Bonds Offer Valuation Compared To Emerging Market Peers?

W

ith an escalation in market volatility an everpresent possibility, risk adverse investors will be looking for a stable yet attractive yield with builtin protection against inflation. For the most part, it is agreed that there is no need to be concerned about non-resident purchases of South African bonds holding up as long as foreigners are cash-flush. Interest rates in developed markets remain low relative to those in emerging markets, and prolonged easy monetary policy in the developed world has ensured that there is an excess supply of money available. So, it comes as no surprise that developed market investors have been purchasing emerging market debt in pursuit of higher returns than they are able to attain domestically – seemingly irrespective of the relative risks embedded in each sovereign. Recently, there have been signs that the tide is about to turn. Central banks in developed markets have begun to signal that their economies are nearly ripe for increases in interest rates and tighter monetary policy to prevail. The risk is that when that happens, there will be a sudden and sharp reversal of capital flows into emerging markets. Even if there is only a gradual and controlled reduction in capital flows, we face the risk that foreign buyers of emerging market bonds will start to look more closely at the potential returns and associated risks of South African debt specifically in relation to its emerging market peers, and allocate their funds in a more discriminating manner towards those that are deemed to

be less risky. It is therefore worthwhile to consider whether South African bonds still offer value relative to those of its peers. A quantitative way to look at this is to decompose the longterm returns on bonds issued by emerging market countries into: •

(US 10-year bond yield) + (country risk premium) + (currency risk premium)

The US 10-year bond yield is widely considered to be the risk-neutral long-term borrowing rate for the globe. As long as it remains low, we can expect the current level of non-resident net purchases of emerging market bonds to be maintained. A decent proxy for the country risk premium is the price in the market that investors are willing to pay for insurance on their holdings of that country’s dollar-denominated debt. It represents the risk that the government might default on its obligations by refusing to repay the debt, or restrict the movement of capital outside of the country. The currency risk is then deduced as the residual after subtracting the above figures from the quoted local currency bond yield for that sovereign. It represents the extra return foreign investors require to compensate them for the risk of losing money when they convert the rand proceeds from their bond holdings to their local currencies. A graphical representation of this decomposition of 10-year bond returns in South Africa, and a few similarly rated emerging market countries, is currently as follows:

Overall, emerging market bond returns versus US bond returns have compressed markedly over the past year – South Africa is no exception. This is because of the generally low volatility that has prevailed in global financial markets lately, and the higher interest rates that can be earned in emerging markets. After the downgrade to its credit rating earlier this year, South Africa is now similarly rated to Russia and Turkey by the major HANGALA CAPITAL PRIVATE EQUITY (PTY) LTD NAMFISA License no. 15/UIM/09 rating agencies. SPRINGBOKS NOW AT GROSS BARMEN Over the past few months, we have been working hard at enriching our offering at our Gross Barmen Resort due to its proximity to Windhoek and Okahandja. One of the major achievement was the arrangement between ourselves and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET)

STRONG INTEREST TO VISIT US FROM NORTH AMERICAN MARKET Ourselves and Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) just returned from the South African Airways (SAA) Africa Showcase. The showcase is the largest travel trade event in North America featuring exclusively African suppliers that represent hotels, safari lodges, destination tourism organisations and other attractions that are popular with North American travellers. This year’s showcase took place between 4 September – 17 September 2017 and covered Washington DC, Toronto and Los Angeles with over 300 tour operators attending the events. The Africa Showcase encompassed two unique opportunities for Namibia to put itself at the forefront. NTB highlighted why Namibia is one of the leading travel destinations in Africa while we presented why our facilities are the most favourable ones

to introduce wildlife at the resort. On 19 August 2017, some springboks were delivered at the resort. The introduction of the springboks is one step towards further introducing other wildlife at the establishment. Mrs Zelna Hengari, our Managing Director extended her gratitude towards MET for delivering these springboks at the resort. “This has always been our wish as a company to offer guests

more than just food and accommodation. During the arrival of the springboks, many guests congratulated us on this move. Mr Francois Snyders, Gross Barmen's Resort Manager said that “many guests were happy with the introduction of the springboks and recommended that if it is possible, we should introduce more wildlife”.

to stay in due to their exclusive location within the National Parks of Namibia. According to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) Tourist Statistical Report 2015, North American travellers are in the top ten tourist visitors to Namibia. During the reporting period, 24 430 travellers from North America visited Namibia in 2015 which is a 12.4% increase from the previous year. Mrs Zelna Hengari, our Managing Director, was highly impressed with the renewed interest that tour operators showed. Many of them were quick to point out that a number of their clients have been asking for Namibia and our establishments to be added to their itineraries when they travel to Southern Africa. “What came out strongly is that Namibia is a destination that North Americans want to visit. This was shown by the number of tour operators who showed interest in marketing Namibia due to its vast wildlife, space and various cultural groups. I, therefore, see us using this

as a key competitive advantage as we offer these things within our establishments”, said Mrs Hengari. During the same trip, Mrs Hengari paid a courtesy visit to H.E Neville Gertze, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Namibia to the United Nations. He advised her that we should consider hosting a Namibian event next year that focuses on culture, music and tourism as this would present further opportunities for us to make inroads into the American market. It was also during this same time that Mrs Hengari was interviewed by Voice of America (VOA) where she highlighted the strengths Namibia has over its neighbouring countries. The Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA) who are currently in New York for the United Nations General Assembly also interviewed Mrs Hengari regarding the outcome of the roadshow.
