a country of opportunities Twenty six years into its democracy, Namibia’s has recorded positive economic growth.
N The Invest in Namibia 2016 conference will take place between 8th and 9th November in Windhoek, under the theme “Promoting Growth for Inclusive Growth and Industrialisation”. The conference aims to attract investors and business ventures for selected and prioritized sector-based investment projects. These projects have been carefully scoped and packaged to be paired with investment capital. amibia is an extraordinarily beautiful country, renowned for its iconic dunes and spectacular Skeleton Coast landscape. It’s the only country in the world where the desert literally meets the sea, and this astonishing phenomenon has had a breathtaking knock-on effect in terms of its flora and fauna...which has, understandably, attracted tourists from around the globe for many, many years. Namibia’s tourism sector has been ranked by the Global Travel and Tourism Competitiveness index as the fourth best in Sub-Saharan Africa, just after South Africa, Seychelles and Mauritius (2015 Index). With a population of around 2,4 million people, Namibia has transformed over the last 26 years into a peaceful, stable country with a robust economy led by a thriving private sector. Rated one of the cleanest countries in Africa, Windhoek, the capital boasts a highly-developed infrastructure system (ranked 11th on the African Infrastructure Development Index by the African Development Bank). Namibia holds enormous potential for infrastructure development and expansion, particularly in sectors such as Energy, Railway and Warehousing.

to accommodate larger and longer vessels, as well as ship-to-shore cranes. Similarly, the expansion of the international airport is expected to kickoff in the near future that would increase airport capacity and link Namibia to various destinations globally with the entrance of international airlines into the market. This move is expected to facilitate trade and investment, as well as draw more tourists. This, and more, makes Namibia not only one of the best tourist countries on the continent, but one of the best places do business in the 21st century.
Top Ten Reasons to Invest in Namibia 1. Solid foundations for democracy, good governance, peace and stability. 2. Legal framework in place, the Investment Promotion Act aimed at facilitating investments. 3. Sound and robust financial system. 4. Ideal gateway to SADC, with preferential access to key markets– European Union market through SADCEU Economic Partnership Agreement and USA market through Africa Growth and Opportunity Act(AGOA). 5. Access to the South & East African Market through SADC Free Trade Area(FTA) and Tripartite Free Trade Area(TFTA). 6. Well-developed infrastructure. 7. High quality of life and social stability. 8. A young, trainable and active labour force. 9. Abundance of natural resources,
including a wide range of mineral deposits including world class diamonds. 10. An attractive location for expatriates to live and work.
Invest in Namibia 2016 The Government of the Republic of Namibia under the auspices of the Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development (MITSMED) is hosting an investment conference titled Invest in Namibia 2016. The Invest in Namibia 2016 conference will take place between 8th and 9th November in Windhoek, under the theme “Promoting Growth for Inclusive Growth and Industrialisation”. The conference aims to attract investors and business ventures for selected and prioritized sector-based investment projects.
These projects have been carefully scoped and packaged to be paired with investment capital. Invest Namibia 2016 will also highlight Namibia’s strategic role in the southern African region, particularly as a growing trade and logistics hub, tourist destination and as an attractive location for industrial projects. Preceding the Invest in Namibia 2016 conference, a curtain raiser will take place in New York on 22 September with a panel discussion centred on investment opportunities in Namibia.
Investment opportunities The goal of Invest in Namibia 2016 is to attract investors to Namibia and find potential investors for the numerous opportunities. These projects are mainly offered by Namibian business persons seeking
foreign partnership investors in sectors such as affordable housing (focused on student accommodation and housing units based on the ‘rent to own’ model; agriculture with emphasis on crop production of wheat and maize; energy - with a focus on plans to establish a 5MW power plant; and manufacturing of bitumen, charcoal, paper packaging, solar PV-T panels and systems, rebar light gauge steel profiles. Investment opportunities in tourism include the expansion of an existing hotel and the development of a tourism concession. Infrastructure opportunities include the provision of services and amenities to the transport and logistics industry.

Dear Esteemed Passengers The month of October 2016 ushers in the last quarter of the current calendar year. It has been a wondrous year – filled with challenges but also immensely rewarding, as we attained various accolades and surpassed key milestones. At this juncture, I wish to recall the following: that 2016 has also been a year in which Air Namibia built upon the robust and sturdy brand of being a regionally recognised national carrier in the area of service excellence and thus was able to conclude cooperative arrangements/ agreements with various partners. In this regard, the following are noteworthy: The Barter Agreement with Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) has resulted in the use of the airline by NWR staff and equally the use of NWR Resorts by the airline. This arrangement has no doubt been beneficial to both parties.
“
Adv. Mandi E.P. Samson Acting Managing Director
Air Namibia has committed to ensuring that all domestic fares cost less than N$3999.00 return and including taxes..
“
Follow us on
Secondly, was the fact that the airline teamed up with SA Express and jointly will host the 46th Annual General Assembly (AGA) of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA). It is indeed an honour for the national carrier to co-host an event of such importance and pedigree in the area of aviation. We thank SA Express for teaming up and further also for allowing us to be part of this event! The AASA AGA, as referred to will be held in the beautiful town of Swakopmund on 20-23 October 2016 under the theme “Airlines in Uncertain Times”. In support of our constant support on the domestic tourism front, we harken to the following good news: that Air Namibia has committed to ensuring that all domestic fares cost less than N$3999.00 return and including taxes. Also, the airline has made flights to Katima Mulilo Aerodrome and Rundu Aerodrome direct flights, from Eros Airport. We hope that all these initiatives, will indeed result in the ingredients needed to ensure that Namibians travel and enjoy this beautiful country of ours! For those visiting Namibia, this month’s “Route/Resort” focus is on the Windhoek-Walvis Bay return flight coupled with the Naukluft Camp. The Naukluft Camp (from within the NWR stable) is located in the Naukluft section of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, which was originally created to serve as a sanctuary for Hartmann’s mountain Zebra, which are endemic to Namibia. Naukluft’s steep cliffs attract various cliffbreeding bird species, including Black Eagles and a variety of wildlife. With its massive and varied rock formations, Naukluft is also a geologist’s paradise. On the safety front, we continue with all types of training to ensure that we remain able to secure the safety imperative at all times.
Again, we thank you for flying with Air Namibia and we would be honoured and most pleased to welcome you on-board again! | 127

Women in Conservation CBRM a rural sustainable development model Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) has been noted as possibly the best method to combine the conservation of natural resources with sustainable development in rural areas.
T
he fundamentals of CBNRM are not new, and most southern African countries are pursuing one or another
variant. What makes Namibia unique is the advanced stage of CBNRM (the first conservancies were gazetted in 1998) and the relative success that has been achieved. This success can be attributed to favourable government legislation, good support structures, and, most importantly, willingness of rural communities to conserve and sustainably manage their natural resources. Experts have labelled CBNRM in Namibia as arguably the biggest conservation success story on the African continent and although many complex challenges remain, when measured in terms of wildlife recovery rates, devolution of rights to local communities and an increase in revenue to conservancies, this statement is a true reflection of the situation – and is something that all Namibians can be proud of. This article is not about the challenges faced in CBNRM, rather it is an acknowledgement of some of the successes of the national CBNRM programme, with a specific focus on women working in conservation at conservancy level. Communal conservancies are officially recognised by the Government of Namibia, have delineated boundaries, and comprise communities that choose to work together to manage wildlife, tourism and other natural resources on their land. A conservancy management committee, elected from among the general conservancy membership, manages conservancies.

Bonkers perhaps, but I take that as a compliment and feel somewhat proud that I managed to complete the adventure of a lifetime unscathed. It was the toughest by far of the five similar expeditions I have undertaken, but I love to recall the space, the silence of the emptiness, something which we in overcrowded Europe rarely manage to find. It’s quite a technical procedure, but produces really fruity, velvety smooth, full-bodied wines with a very low tannin structure. We’ve had a lot of good results with our Shiraz and are now doing a few exercises with our Cabernet Franc, it’s very exciting, and I think will produce a real showstopper wine,” Mike explains enthusiastically.

How the estate got its name
Terroir talk
Journey’s End belongs to the Gabb family, originally from Shropshire in the United Kingdom. In 1994, the farm’s founder Roger Gabb was on the hunt for a beach house for his family. He and his wife were keen on the Camps Bay area but could not find anything suitable. While the beach house search continued, Roger visited this wine farm, which totally captivated him. Soon after, he purchased the farm without mentioning it to his wife. A year later, still expecting a beach house, she and Roger went to view another property in Camps Bay, which was unsatisfactory. Roger then asked her if he could take her to look at a wonderful property in the Somerset West area. On seeing the wine farm, she exclaimed, “it’s beautiful” to which Roger replied, “well that’s actually a good thing as I have already bought it.” Her response? “This is the end of your journey in terms of wine estate purchases.”

According to Mike, the expansion Journey’s End is currently undergoing means it will become a bigger operation with around a 30% increase in size. “We produce about 100 000 litres of wine under the Journey’s End label each year and we also do a lot of bulk wine for the overseas market. In total, we’ve produced more than 600 000 litres this year in a 100 000 litre capacity cellar. We are currently bottling Journey’s End Haystack 2016 and just before that we had our second bottling of Weather Station Sauvignon Blanc 2016,” explains Mike.

As a result of the excellent vintage and careful maturation, it is succulent, silky smooth with polished tannins. Although drinking well, there is enough underlying structure for further maturation. Technical Analysis Alcohol 14 % RS 3.7g/l TA 5.9g/l pH 3.45
SINGLE VINEYARD CHARDONNAY 2014 Clear and bright, straw with a hint of green. Expressive fruit, initially lemon and citrus, but under that it’s more tropical and pineapple, all seamed through with crushed almond, savoury oak tones. This is a layered, complex wine, the result of cool-grown fruit carefully handled, plus barrel selection. The palate is silky, with a tangy finish from the fruit and acid combination, extending the flavours. Technical Analysis Alcohol 13.5 % RS 4.6g/l TA 6.2g/l pH 3.47
THE PASTOR’S BLEND CABERNET SAUVIGNON MERLOT CABERNET FRANC 2014 A well-judged partnership of the classic Bordeaux varieties, resulting in an elegant, harmonious wine for earlier drinking rather than long cellaring. Juicy plums and brambleberries, a savoury spice dusting from the oak, some dried herbs, giving it versatility for a range of food dishes. Technical Analysis Alcohol 13.5 % RS 3.9g/l TA 6.0g/l pH 3.48
CAPE DOCTOR CABERNET SAUVIGNON MERLOT MALBEC CABERNET FRANC 2009 Only produced in the best years. Deep fruitcake richness on the nose, cinnamon and nutmeg spices, followed by a perfectly balanced, silky smooth, streamlined body. Misleadingly accessible, despite the current appeal, there is enough underlying power for a long future ahead. Technical Analysis Alcohol 14.5 % RS 3.5g/l TA 5.8g/l pH 3.47
MERLOT 2012 Ruby, clear and bright. Blackcurrants and raspberries, a hint of violets, with the French oak well balanced to allow the fruit to shine. It shows nutmeg, vanilla, and white pepper perfume, and finishes with just enough grip to promise good cellaring potential. An elegant, polished wine, already drinking well. Technical Analysis Alcohol 14 % RS 3.9g/l TA 5.8g/l pH 3.56
SHIRAZ 2011 Ruby with a garnet edge. An expressive nose, brambleberries, campfire smoke, dusty savoury spice, this is a complex layered wine, providing lots of interest. Already delicious, the bit of age has made the texture smooth and rounded, with beautifully integrated tannins, but there is still a good future ahead. Technical Analysis Alcohol 14 % RS 5.2g/l TA 5.8g/l pH 3.50
DESTINATION CHARDONNAY 2014 Destination is the pinnacle of white winemaking at Journey’s End and is only produced during exceptional vintages. This wine is characterized by a sweeping spread of rich fruit and is given texture and resonance from generous oaking. An admirable harmony of flavours ranging from ripe peach and apricot to citrus peel and lemon preserve accompanied by toasted pine nuts and a long lasting creamy textured finish. Destination’s long ageing potential will reward patient cellaring for up to 10 years post bottling. Technical Analysis Alcohol 14.43 % RS 5.03g/l TA 6.13g/l pH 3.51
HAYSTACK CHARDONNAY 2015 Clear and bright straw coloured with a hint of green. Oak and fruit are perfectly matched, each donating without dominating: citrus peel and melon enriched by a subtle, savoury biscuit overlay. The limey acidity seamed through the fruit flavours, gives food-friendly freshness and promises a few years’ ageing potential. Technical Analysis Alcohol 14 % RS 3.1g/l TA 5.8g/l pH 3.55
WEATHER STATION SAUVIGNON BLANC 2015
THE HUNTSMAN SMV 2014 Shows the expected hedgerow fruit, scrub, dried herbs and white pepper that comes from these varieties, along with an evenly balanced oak structure. Full-bodied and smoothly luscious, it is ready to drink, the freshness adding lift and vibrancy to the dark fruit and liquorice richness. Technical Analysis Alcohol 13.5 % RS 3.7g/l TA 5.6g/l pH 3.51
TASTINGS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
Has the pale straw-colour of youth, with a tinge of green. A complex wine, there’s melon and grapefruit on a bed of apple and Bosche pear, with a seam of freshness giving vitality and extending the flavours. Reflecting the vintage, this shows perfectly ripe fruit, full flavours and round finish. Full of character and delicious.

Animal farm revisited Christine Cummings sculpts animals with soul in clay – they can be animals she knows and loves, or animals you know and love. Whichever, her work is highly sought after by galleries and devotees worldwide. Edited by: Anne Schauffer photographs supplied
C
hristine Cummings was born in Lancashire in the United Kingdom,
and raised on a smallholding surrounded by animals of every kind: “My parents kept pigs, we had everything from mice to ponies, donkeys, and for a while, I always had a guinea pig in my pocket!” Christine’s parents were creative, her mum in a drawing and painting sense, and her dad always working with his hands: “My mum’s always encouraged me in my art, recognising that this was my area. I usually had the job of designing the school magazine cover! And my dad, who was always making things, designed and engineered a block planting machine for agriculture which sold widely. Now in his 70s, he still never stops, and he’s turned his attention to wood. He’s made his own band saw, his latest project being a shepherd’s hut built from scratch, wheels and all!” No surprise that Christine’s love of animals extended into other area, and she remembers from small, collecting pottery animals: “That’s what I spent my pocket money on, and I always asked for Beswick, Wade and Whimseys for birthdays and Christmas. Actually, I wanted to run a cattery...so my interest was always animals and ceramics.” Christine says she didn’t perform very well academically, and left school with only a single O level in art. She went straight to art college for three years, where she benefitted hugely from a visiting exchange tutor from America: “His name was Charles C. Scott, and I

always remember his words, ‘A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins.’ That’s when I started using clay as a medium, and I loved it.” Christine went on to a 3D HND course for two years, specialising in ceramics, and when she completed that, set up her workshop in an outbuilding on her parent’s farm... and worked part-time packing lettuces.
That was then, this is now Today, a good percentage of Christine’s work goes straight to galleries. She has a stand at a trade show every year where she spends time with the gallery owners with whom she’s built up relationships over the years - they get to see her new creations. For Christine, “The biggest turning point in selling to galleries was winning the “Best Newcomer Award” sponsored by Craft and Design Magazine. I was presented with a £500 cheque, and have had invaluable support from the editors Angie and Paul Boyer for the last 20 years. At the time, my work was purely pig studies, spending endless time sketching and photographing at Agricultural Shows! “Then to

endless inspiration in the humour and movement of dogs...from their lolloping gait to a little cock of the head that speaks volumes.” The other side of Christine’s work is private commissions – a customer sends her a photograph or brings their hound to visit and she works from them to capture the essence of their dog – she’s not interested in creating a replica with no spirit: “I get inspired by raw sketchy drawings and paintings. I spend a lot of time myself drawing from life, enjoying the urgency of knowing the subject will

move any second! I also get inspired by “can do” attitudes a man from New Zealand called John Britton who built a racing motorbike from scratch, every nut and bolt because he couldn’t find the quality he required, that kind of commitment fires me up!” Today, Christine lives with Peter and their eight-year-old son Freddie and four sausage dogs, her little muses! “When I’m creating in my workshop, I’m truly happy and content, feeling so lucky that I love my job so much that I just want to continue to continue!” Christine recently purchased a trolley kiln that will allow her to make life sized critters: “I can’t wait to get started, and plan to combine this work with a sculpture trail I’ve created in woodland next to my workshop. There’s still so many things to make, it’s mind-boggling and wonderful all rolled into one!”

The wheel story: New Models round up JAMES SIDDALL on what's happening in the wonderful world of wheels... Market captur One of the fastest expanding vehicle segments is sub-compact SUVs or crossovers – which includes Renault's likeable little Captur, now available in turbodiesel guise. There are two mechanically identical Captur diesels available. First up is the Sunset Limited Edition which is painted Diamond Black while the roof, mirrors, and various bits of trim are finished in Sunset Orange. There are splashes of orange in the interior, too. Powering both this edition and the standard Dynamique model is
Renault's well-known 1.5 dCi motor linked to a five-speed manual with drive to the front wheels. This little turbodiesel is pretty punchy with 66kW at 4 000rpm, and 220Nm at 1 750rpm. Top speed is a claimed 171km/h, and zero to 100km/h comes up in an acceptable but hardly incendiary 13.1 seconds. And fuel consumption? Figure on a claimed 3.6 litres per 100km in the combined cycle. You read right, and while you might battle to match this figure there's no escaping the fact that this machine is extraordinarily light on fuel.
Equipment levels are high, from LED daytime running lights to 17inch alloys to climate control to automatic-on headlights and rainsensitive windscreen wipers to cruise control. You also get Renault's MediaNav infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen. And after a week with each of these turbodiesel Captur variants, it seems probable – no, likely – that the market is going to love them. But let's hope that an automatic version becomes available in the fullness of time.

BMW M760Li
Seventh heaven A zero-to-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds would be considered pretty respectable for a supercar. But it is also the acceleration figure of the upcoming BMW M760Li xDrive – a super-luxury, long-wheelbase version of the current 7 Series. And with an astounding 448kW and 800Nm on tap from its twin-turbo V12, this big Bavarian will surge on to 250km/h – or 305km/h if you opt for the M Driver's package. Luxury levels are almost incomprehensibly sybaritic, and driver engagement levels promise to be outstanding – although of course some
Toyota's RAV4

fortunate owners might just choose to bask in the sumptuous rear. All-wheeldrive is also part of the package, and when this halo-model 7 Series goes on sale in early 2017 expect it to carry a healthy price tag. But then, of course, you do get what you pay for...
Rav it up Toyota's RAV4 is a hugely – and justly – popular SUV. And now it has just received some tweaks, mostly to the range-topping VX
models. This includes VXs getting some handy tech in the guise of Lane Change Assist – incorporating Blind Spot Monitoring – and Cross Traffic Alert. Useful when, say, backing out of a shopping mall parking lot. Cool foot-well lighting is also now part of the deal, while as before VX buyers can choose between a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, and a 2.2-litre diesel variant. Both driving through a six-speed automatic transmission with driverselectable AWD.
Captivating Captiva The Chevrolet Captiva has been around since 2007 – which in automotive terms makes it ancient. It did, however, recently receive an upgrade. Enhancements include a new grille, LED daytime running lights, 18-inch alloys and Chev's excellent MyLink infotainment system. There's also a new leather steering wheel, and an all-new dashboard and instrument cluster. As before you can have your Captiva with a 2.4-litre petrol engine, but I have just spent a week with the top-range (there are only three models in the lineup) 2.2 turbodiesel auto model, the 2.2D LT. And do you know what? It proved that while the inherent design is arguably a little dated, the Captiva is still a competent, calming, balming machine in daily use. Output is 135kW at 3 800rpm, and 400Nm at 2 000rpm, while power runs
Chevrolet Captiva
through a six-speed automatic. Expect it to move from rest to 100km/h in 9.8 seconds, with a top trot of 192km/h. Combined fuel consumption is 7.8 litres per 100km. Power is to the front wheels only, and while this Chev is not a proper off-road tool, a 171mm ground clearance means it is useful on poor surfaces, dirt tracks, and the like. Safety – active and passive – is well taken care of. Not only does the Captiva have a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, but it is equipped with an army of electronic aids. Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Traction
Control System (TCS). Braking Assist System (BAS). Hill Start Assist (HAS). Hill Descent Control (HDC). You name it. It can also seat seven – although the third-row seats are only ideal for kids – while creature comforts are well taken care of with everything from dualzone climate control to electronically adjustable driver's seat to power folding mirrors. So, yes, while the inherent design is now getting on this Chev remains well worth a look – not least because of its ability to soak up road irregularities and poor surfaces.
Feline fine Bentley makes a SUV – the Bentayga. So does Maserati – the Levante. So the notion of a Jaguar SUV is not so strange. And as it happens this British maker's new F-Pace model is even better than fans of the marque might have dared hope. I have just spent a week with the 20d R-Sport. It is good for 132kW and 430Nm from 1 750rpm to 2 500rpm. And while there is much more performance to be had from more expensive models using the three-litre V6 turbodiesel, and the supercharged V6 three-litre
Jaguar SUV
| 57
Hyundai-i30
petrol motor, the 20d R-Sport has ample urge. Top speed is 208km/h, with zero-to-100km/h coming up in 8.7 seconds. Power is to all four wheels via an especially slick eight-speed automatic, while combined fuel consumption is a claimed 5.3 litres per 100km. This machine is also especially attractive, and its feline roots are unmistakable. Plus its aluminiumintensive architecture means a weight of just 1 775kg in 20d guise. So it is agile and light on its feet, and tech abounds, from the handcrafted, outstandingly finished interior replete with cutting-edge features to technologies such as Torque Vectoring, Adaptive Dynamics and Configurable Dynamics. Jaguar fans are going to go crazy for this vehicle – even if, pricewise, the likes of competing machines such as the Mercedes GLC undercut it somewhat.
technologies previously only found in way more expensive vehicles. Expect it on our market next year. And also expect it to dazzle buyers who – like me – remember the rather basic, flair-free Hyundais of 20 or more years ago.
Happy birthday! Time. Where does it go? The Volvo Amazon – known to most of us as the 121 – has just turned 60. Volvo’s then-new four-door model was revealed at the first weekend of September in 1956 in Sweden. And right from the start it was exceptionally elegant. Safe, too. In 1959, Volvo’s patented three-point

seatbelt became a standard feature in the Amazon – a world first. As Volvo says, no single other safety feature has been anywhere near as significant in saving lives. It is estimated that at least one million lives have been saved by the three-point seatbelt over the course of its 57-year lifetime. It also had an exceptionally long model life, and between 1956 and 1970 some 667 791 Amazons were built. At one stage there was even an assembly plant in Durban. Today, of course, with vehicles from the XC90 – currently the South African Car of the Year – to the all-new S90, this Swedish manufacturer is in the best shape of its life.

When the best gets yet better Toyota is going to have a best-seller with its all-new CH-R, predicts JAMES SIDDALL. Meanwhile further enhancements and improvements are on the cards for some of this marque's most popular models....
60 |
C
rystal-balling – that is, making confident future predictions – can be fraught with peril. And potential embarrassment. Take IBM chairman Tom Watson's 1945 assertion that, “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” Or inventor Lee DeForest's statement that, “"While theoretically and technically television may be feasible, commercially and financially it is an impossibility." But – and this is a big “but” – there's one prediction I'm willing and able to make with confidence. And that's the fac t
that when Toyota's all-new CH-R cross-over hits the showrooms in the first quarter of next year it's going to sell so fast as to embarrass hotcakes. After all, the compact crossover/ SUV category is the fastest-growing vehicle segment, and this sassy, spunky little machine is going to offer everything you'd expect from Toyota. Brilliant build quality. Great styling. Reliability. And allround desirability. Powering the cool, coupe-like CH-R will be a turbopetrol 1.2-litre motor making 85kW and 185Nm of torque. Drive will be to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or CVT 'box. We can't wait to drive one. Meanwhile, in further proof of Toyota's ongoing, overarching quest for excellence, the much-
loved Etios range is due to get some added zing when, also in the early part of 2017, a Sprint model will be added to the line-up. This baby will pack totally revamped front styling with a sporty and prominent front bumper design set to swivel eyes. The large lower air-dam with integrated foglamp bezels will be complemented by a distinctive tapered front grille. The rear bumper will also feature aesthetic enhancements, while upgrades and improvements will be made to the already funky interior, with twin-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels rounding off the whole package. Nice. As for the Hilux, well, the sales-topping, sophisticated newgeneration of this much-loved machine gets some upgrades to the SRX model. All based on customer feedback. And all proof that
| 61
Toyota listens. The SRX – and the enhanced models are due out in the last quarter of this year – will include a move to wide-body construction, complete with wide integrated over-fenders as utilised on current Raider-grade models. The change to the wide-body profile also gives SRX models a more rugged stance, thanks to the fitment of 17-inch alloy wheels wearing 265/55 profile rubber. “The new generation Hilux has been extremely well received, with customers recognising the sheer completeness and capability of the latest Hilux package. Toyota prides itself on being customer-centric, largely attributed to extensive market research,” states Toyota SA Motors’ Glenn Crompton, VicePresident, Marketing. “Based on this customer feedback we are implementing certain changes to the SRX grade model – in order to bring it more in line with lifestyle buyers’ needs without compromising on the ruggedness and durability that the SRX models are known for.” As for the Hilux's sibling, the Fortuner – which has also been a huge hit in new-generation guise
62 |
– 2.8 GD-6 and V6 models will get an upgrade to stylish 18-inch alloy wheels with a distinctive dual-profile machined finish. The expected release date is also in the latter part of this year. And on the Lexus-side – and if you ask me the term “Lexus-like” deserves to enter the dictionary as a synonym for excellence – the facelifted IS Sport sedan will be in showrooms around November. This builds on an already outstanding product, with the IS's trademark shape enhanced thanks the likes of all-new bumper design, and more prominent air-dams, while cutting-edge LED headlamps truly promise to turn night into day. The line-up continues as before with the two-litre turbocharged IS 200t available in E and EX grades, and the 3.5-litre V6-powered IS 350 available in F-Sport trim. And yes, these powerplants are not only punchy, but they're also incredibly silky and silent. And indeed all these enhancements and improvements – as well as the upcoming debut of the CH-R which promises to stormtroop the market – are further proof of Toyota's ongoing quest for excellence. On all fronts...

Automatic for the people In self-shifting guise the new Opel Astra provides an excellent argument for not changing gears yourself, writes JAMES SIDDALL...
T
here are any number of motoring fallacies out there. And just one of them is that a small automatic is – at very best – a compromise. Now this argument deserves to be destroyed once for all. Especially after having just spent a week with Opel's utterly outstanding new Astra in selfshifting guise. Some weeks ago I spent seven days with a 1.4T Enjoy model in six-speed manual guise. It was a busy week that included an intercity work trip of over 1 000km – and it was ample to prove that this German manufacturer's eleventh-generation Astra is deserving of the plaudits that have been heaped on it. And just one of those plaudits includes the title of 2016 European Car of the Year. But if anything the six-speed automatic version of this car is yet more desirable. And by the way, its makers rightly say that the Astra “represents a quantum leap for Opel in this segment and will take the brand’s C-segment
64 |
contender well into the next decade” Indeed, this five-door hatchback – which is not only lighter than its predecessor but has a roomier cabin – takes the stress our of driving with its six-speed torque convertor automatic transmission. Of course, the Astra can be had with engines including a 1.0 turbo, a 1.4 turbo, and a 1.6 turbo, with the automatic version being available only with the 1.4T, in both Enjoy and Sport form. And what an silky engine this is, with 110kW and 245Nm (in automatic guise) on tap. This gives ample shove with the machine loping from rest to 100km/h in a brisk nine seconds, while top speed is 215km/h. Combined fuel consumption is listed at just 5.5 litres per 100km – which is only fractionally more than what the 1.4T manual uses. Equipment levels are virtually incomparable considering the segment that the Astra competes in, with one of its biggest rivals being the admittedly excellent VW Golf.
Just to skim through some it, these include Traffic Sign Assist (TSA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) with Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Following Distance Indication (FDI), and Forward Collision Alert (FCA) with Low Speed Collision Mitigation Braking (LSCMB). That's a bit of mouthful, to be sure, but these cutting-edge, high-tech systems rapidly make themselves indispensable in daily driving.
Creature comforts are also comprehensively catered for in the Astra – including by Opel's next-generation R4.0 IntelliLink infotainment system, among other features – while safety levels are predictably stellar. Above all, while manual versions of this machine are unarguably excellent for those who enjoy swapping cogs themselves, it's a safe bet that the automatic version will win converts...

A simply stellar suv Drive VW's all new Tiguan and chances are good that you are really going to want one, says JAMES SIDDALL
C
all it the “200-metre test.” It's hardly an exhaustive, objective process but it occurs when you only need to drive a new vehicle for a very short distance to realise that it is superb bordering on stellar. And so it was with the all-new VW Tiguan – although admittedly during the recent launch I got to drive it some 200km or so. Now the previous Tiguan was justly popular, with some 2.8 million finding homes since its introduction in 2007. But the new model, recently launched to motoring media, is not merely “a little better” or “a subtle improvement” or “upgraded in certain areas.” It's a whole new ballgame. Now this is the first SUV from VW to be based on the MQB platform so it shares underpinnings and tech with the likes of the Golf and Passat, both excellent vehicles – with the Passat, to my mind, being a hugely underrated, understated car. And as an aside, the line between SUV and soft-roader is blurred,
66 |
with the Tiggy not being designed for hardcore off-roading, especially as only front-wheel-drive variants are available right now, more of which in a second. It's an especially handsome machine this. Perhaps the most attractive in the compact SUV class where competition is fierce and buyers have huge choice. Indeed, it manages to be both striking and subtly restrained. It's also a little bigger than its predecessor with width up by 30mm, and length increased by 60mm, while height is reduced by 33mm, as is weight by 53kg. All of which translates into not just a chunkier profile, but vastly more interior room. Fold the rear bench – and it can slide by 18cm while it is split 40:20:40 – and the Tiggy will swallow 1 655 litres of cargo, or 145 litres more than its predecessor. This is an important consideration in a lifestyle vehicle such as this which will frequently be called on to carry all the cargo that accompanies a busy lifestyle. Right now just three variants are available. All use 1.4 TSI turbopetrol motors, with the two manual models making 92kW and 200Nm. The six-speed DSG model, meanwhile, is good for 110kW and 250Nm. It's also the one to go for if you can stretch to it, partly because VW's DSG 'box is so slick and seamless, and partly because changing gears yourself seems increasingly redundant.
Performance from the 110kW variant is perfectly adequate, with zero-to100km/h coming up in 9.2 seconds, and top speed a claimed 200km/h, while fuel consumption for all models is 6.1 litres in the combined cycle. Even the 92kW version has more than enough get-up-and-go for most applications. If it's more horses you want, you'll need to wait until the last quarter of this year when we'll get 2.0 TDI engines with outputs of 81kW, 105kW, and 130kW. We can also expect a 2.0 TSI model making a punchy 162kW, while the 105kW and 130kW turbodiesels, as well as the 2.0 TSI, will be fitted with the 4Motion drive system. But where the new Tiggy truly shines is in the interior. Of late VW has been providing cabins that vie not just for best-in-class but compete with those from way more expensive vehicles, and
this machine is is no exception. Perceived quality is simply superb, and even the most minor switchgear operates quite beautifully, with a distinctly premium feel. The cockpit is now aligned to the driver, and standard equipment levels are high. But as with many – no, most – German cars there's a long and tempting list of optional extras from a retractable head-up display to a range-topping sound system boasting 400 watts. And of course safety is well taken care of, with the likes of six airbags, ESP – that increasingly indispensable electronic nanny – and VW's automatic post-collision braking system which helps to avoid dangerous secondary collisions. So, yes, this is a brilliant evolution of the original. But would I buy one with my own money if I was shopping for a compact SUV? Definitely!

A tough Italian BLURB: Fiat's all-new Fullback bakkie is set to provide a compelling alternative to the established players in this segment....
F
iat makes great little cars, right? But bakkies? Well, this Italian manufacturer actually has a history going back over 100 years of making light commercial vehicles, and its all-new Fullback promises to easily compete with even the market leaders in this segment. And it is certainly not just a pretty toy – although there is no escaping that visually it is an extraordinarily attractive machine. And while aesthetics are an inherently subjective business, a quick scan of the pictures here will leave little doubt as to the Italian flair this machine boasts.
As Fiat itself says: “Fullback is ready to take on any challenge, hence its name, which is derived from the key position in rugby or American football - the last man in the line of defence and also a
defender in attack - which denotes a player who is capable of dealing with any situation.” And as the company further adds: “This same winning spirit can be found in this new Fiat Professional vehicle, that of a `player' able to adapt to any requirement, at work or at play, as is well summarised by the claim: `Built for your work. And for your life`.” So this “Work Hero,” as it has been aptly dubbed is ready to play and work – and we mean work hard. Overseas it is already selling up a storm. To ensure that there is a Fullback ideal for your requirements, the machine is available with two engine options. The entry-level single cab uses a hardy 2.4-litre turbopetrol engine to make 97kW and 202Nm, while the 2.5-litre turbodiesel is available with
two separate power outputs. One makes 100kW and 324Nm, and the other 131kW and 400Nm. The Fullback is available in a 4X2 version (rear-wheel drive) in the single and double cab, as well as in a 4X4 version (all-wheel drive) in the double cab. And the latter is doubtless going to be a hit with those who work and play hard, especially with parttime 4X4 selection and rear diff lock. Fans of this vehicle – and there will be many – will be pleased to note that it is no stripped-down, back-tobasics workhorse. Now, of course, we are not going to bore you with a full and drawn-out list of standard equipment. But, for instance, even the singlecab 2.4-litre petrol model comes standard with the likes of power windows, manual air conditioning, central power locking, 16-inch steel

wheels, and ABS with EBD, while the load bin is rubberised. Move up to the Double Cab 2.5 Diesel (100Kw) 4x2 SX and you get E-locker rear axle, leather trim, cruise control, power windows front and rear, manual air-conditioning, and driver and passenger airbags. You also get ABS with EBD, central locking, keyless entry (remote), audio controls on the steering wheel,
17-inch alloy wheels, tow bar, and rubberised bin. As for the flagship Double Cab 2.5 Diesel (131Kw) 4x4 LX, well, here you're talking part-time 4WD, E-locker rear axle, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Other equipment – which would not be amiss on a luxury vehicle going for double the price – numbers bi-xenon headlights, leather trim, cruise control, Bluetooth, automatic air conditioning,
and rear-view camera. And that is just scratching the surface of it. Get this machine – which is capable of lugging a load of over a ton and towing up to three tons – in a variety of snappy colours from Titanium Grey to Solid Red. And reassuringly, a five-year/100 000km service plan, and threeyear/100 000km warranty are all part of the package. Rhino Facts: In the late 1970s aggressive poaching took the Namibian Black Rhino to the brink of extinction. Thousands of rhino were slaughtered to satisfy the demand for fashion accessories and oriental medicines. By the early 1980s the population had plummeted from 65,000 to just 60. The ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project was established to reintroduce and conserve rhino in the Erongo region, reintroducing Black Rhino into the area after the last of its kind was caught in 1974. For every bottle of OASIS sold a contribution is made to the ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project, helping to conserve and protect these beautiful creatures.

Highhumour A linguistics professor says during a lecture that, “In English, a double negative forms a positive. But in some languages, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, in no language in the world can a double positive form a negative.” But then a voice from the back of the room piped up, “Yeah, right.”

When Albert Einstein was making the rounds of the speaker’s circuit, he usually found himself eagerly longing to get back to his laboratory work. One night as they were driving to yet another rubberchicken dinner, Einstein mentioned to his chauffeur (a man who somewhat resembled Einstein in looks & manner) that he was tired of speechmaking. “I have an idea, boss,” his chauffeur said. “I’ve heard you give this speech so many times. I’ll bet I could give it for you.” Einstein laughed loudly and said, “Why not? Let’s do it!” When they arrived at the dinner, Einstein donned the chauffeur’s cap and jacket and sat in the back of the room. The chauffeur gave a beautiful rendition of Einstein’s speech and even answered a few questions expertly. Then a supremely pompous professor asked an extremely esoteric question about antimatter formation, digressing here and there to let everyone in the audience know that he was nobody’s fool. Without missing a beat, the chauffeur fixed the professor with a steely stare and said, “Sir, the answer to that question is so simple that I will let my chauffeur, who is sitting in the back, answer it for me.” 100 |

There’s a time to be bold. And a time to be cautious.
With 51 of his 63 wins coming from knockouts, Jack Dempsey’s bold boxing style had made him the most feared man in the sport. But when an outright underdog took his title by forcing him to go the full ten rounds, he learnt a valuable lesson. You can’t always rely on a bold approach to lead you to victory. Which is why, when it comes to investing, we never take anything as a given, and always utilise the power of restraint. Because knowing when to be bold, and when to be cautious, makes all the difference. And that’s what makes us Wealthsmiths™.

Money Market Unit Trusts, a good cash flow parking bay If the balance in your bank account is more than N$10 000 on average per month, ask yourself who’s getting rich from that; suffice to say it is not you.
A
ny good wealth and investment strategy starts with basics like how do you manage your cash flow? It is not managed if it is kept in a current account. About 20-odd years ago there was that one line item on your bank statement “fees”, a total amount that the bank deducted for “services”. This was then transformed because of so-called transparency. It is the consumer’s right to know what it entails, they said. The result of that is a slew of charges now reflecting on our bank statements and that one called “service fee” is still there… Do you know what all of these charges are? No, you have long given up trying to understand what they are for, never mind adding them up to see how much you are in actual fact paying per month. So let me tell you: the cumulated fees on an average current account offering, (the one you qualify for as a middle-income earner), are as much as 1% of your total earnings. Now that we already are on a -1%, let’s see what we can earn from our banks. Yes, you guessed it, most of them offer 0% interest up to a certain average balance, mostly N$50 0000. Some banks offer a rebate on fees if a certain balance is kept in your account, but it is not as good as it sounds. If that same amount is invested in a money market unit trust at current rates, it can earn you double the amount of interest versus the rebate on fees you’re getting. Whichever way you turn it, if you keep money in a current account, the bank is at the winning end.

Is your money really safe in a unit trust? This is where a lot of people are still uninformed. Different unit trusts cater for different needs; and the one needed to manage your cash
flow must be a money market unit trust. It aims to preserve capital by investing in short-term (less than one year) securities, liquid debt and monetary instruments and has the lowest risk of all types of unit trusts. On that note, do not think that money in a bank account is risk-free. Banks operate on margin and that in itself poses a risk. There have been a couple of instances where banks merely stopped account holders from withdrawing money because of liquidity problems and some even filed for bankruptcy. Here is what you do. Work out your monthly budget for all normal running expenses – groceries, fuel, rent, bond, vehicle payments, school fees etc. – and keep only that amount in your current account. Right after payday, immediately transfer the surplus to a money market unit trust. Leave it there until an unforeseen expense arises. Then all you have to do is send an email to the unit trust fund with an instruction to withdraw the money. Within 24 hours the money will be available in your current account. Even if the money is only invested for a couple of days before you need it and withdraw it; add up all the little interest amounts that you received throughout the year and you will see the difference. To all the financial managers: I’m sure there is no need to tell you that any business should run its cash flow like this, or is there? If you are a Namibian or South African you can contact me and we will gladly assist you in opening an account.

How do we create opportunities at [ 27°37'23.1"S, 10°09'33.7"E ] ?
The Cape Horse Mackerel (Trachurus capensis), is a mackerel-like species in the family Carangidae. Just one of the species harvested by Bidvest Namiba subsidiaries, they have been reported to reach a maximum length of 60cm with a more common length of 30cm.
27°37'23.1"S, 10°09'33.7"E
A pelagic species ( they like the open water ), are usually found at a depth of 300m and are mostly found over the continental shelf, often over sandy bottoms. The shoals rise to feed in surface waters at night, but can be found close to the bottom during the day. Horse mackerel are very abundant in Namibian waters, providing a sustainable living and food source for more than 3 million people a day in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Bidvest Namibia Creating opportunities. Growing People. Unlocking potential
Bidvest Namibia prides itself on being a forward thinking, passionate and
innovative company. We believe in doing
things differently, empowering people and creating new business opportunities that nurture a sustainable business
environment and return on investment,
while simultaneously uplifting the lives of our communities.
At Bidvest Namibia, we don’t wait for
opportunity to knock, we build the doors to create them. On the business front, Bidvest Namibia constantly seeks
innovative ways of creating environments to grow and sustain budding businesses.
90 |
Our business model is decentralised yet synergetic. Growth is primarily achieved
by expanding and diversifying the product and service offerings of our existing
business entities. And we ensure that our human resource capacity and skills are
continuously enhanced to provide growth potential for employees.
Without our communities, staff,
shareholders and customers, there would be no Bidvest. We are committed to ploughing back into Namibia’s
socio-economic sector by championing
initiatives that better the lives of many. In line with our Government’s plans, we are
dedicated to eradicating poverty and
seeking entrepreneurial opportunities for women, disadvantaged groups and the budding youth.
Each year, we support a myriad of
programmes that translate into positive, tangible results in environmental and
conservation efforts, education, sport,
growing the small business sector and upskilling women and youth. Our CSI
programmes provide bursaries and study aid grants to Namibians in various fields
from maritime disciplines, to engineering and anthropology.
“
Bidvest Namibia is more than just a business. It is a group of people who understand that every person is intricately linked to another; that no man is an island, and whatever we do affects everyone else around us. If we are to create ripples in the water, then let us make sure that these ripples are positive, uplift our people and create an environment for further growth, says Bidvest Namibia CEO, Sebby Kankondi.

Initially the impact is hardly felt as we start using credit card debt, buy on store credit, take out a second bonds on our houses, etc. but ultimately the level of debt leaves us in dire straits and we ask ourselves how did we get ourselves into this situation?
One of our biggest assets is our ability to generate income, and as such the importance of investing in our own human capital is vital. Remaining a marketable commodity that is linked to a sustainable income is therefore a cornerstone to creating wealth. This same goes for spending on “smaller” items, by not making impulsive purchases, giving yourself the time to shop around and establish the best price and ultimately processing the perceived need and very likely you realise you do not really need it.

Baggage Guidelines
At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.
Our rules pertaining to baggage include the following allowance, with maximum weight of 7 kg each, and maximum size 55 x 38 x 20 cm; plus an overcoat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a ladies hand bag, a reasonable amount of reading material, and a laptop. We also allow a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches as hand baggage.
