WORKING AT NETFLIX Interview with Megan Irwin ('96)
Where are you from and do you remember how you came to attend AISB? I attended AISB because my parents worked at the Canadian Embassy. I went to AISB from ‘94-‘96... I missed graduation by a year, but we had to go back to Canada, unfortunately.
How was your first day? On my first day, I felt awkward, because nerves always get the best of me. It’s always difficult to switch to a new school, let alone a new country, never mind your 5th or 6th school. But the people I had met earlier welcomed me so warmly; I will never forget it. I’m still in touch with a lot of my AISB friends.
Did you have a favorite teacher? Which one of the teachers made the biggest impression on your life and why? A favourite teacher is hard to say, as I can honestly say that every one of them stood out (and this is 25 years ago). Jennifer Kular is an outstanding art teacher. Mr. Mindorff was incredibly patient as my biology teacher, Mr. Newman stretched our skills as our English lit teacher, and I can’t thank my maths teachers enough for their unwavering tolerance.
What have you been up to since your graduation from AISB? Since graduating, I went to culinary school in Vancouver, BC, and was cook/chef for many years.
Describe your current job and the path you took to get there. I eventually went back to school for horticulture, started working in landscaping, and ended up being the on-set greensperson on the tv show “Anne with an E” for two years. Since then, working in film has been my passion. The hours are long, and it’s hard work, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see your efforts on screen. I’ve worked on Kim’s Convenience, Baroness Von Sketch, Private Eyes, and Murdoch Mysteries (all Canadian shows ), among others. It’s so much fun!! I honestly couldn’t wish for a better job. That being said, it sounds A LOT more glamourous than it is.
But .... it’s pretty fun to watch a show and know what detail went into it :)
