BETA PADHAO, BETI BACHAO Manik Kaur Sadana

T

ill some time ago, I was one of the millions of people who would read the daily newspaper as a regime in the morning and would feel totally lost and out of touch with the world without doing so. However, it’s been a while that I completely refrain from even looking at the paper leave alone going through it! Reasons are far too many unfortunately and could resonate with many as well.

For years now, there hasn’t been a single day when I don’t see a case of rape, molestation or abuse on the front page in bold letters! Millions of us are shocked, moved, filled with disgust and then back to normal as the day goes along. Thousands of us are perhaps even become immune to such stories as they take another sip of their morning tea while reading these ghastly stories.

comes only to others and never us!

There are so many issues concerning women to be dealt with when it comes to a country like India but safety I reckon should come first! “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao “ campaign started a few years ago by the Government and was supported by all the major organizations of the country including FICCI FLO. I was jolted when the other day news flashed on my mobile phone on various social platforms that a class ten girl was brutally gang raped while she was coming back from her tuition class. Tears welled up in my eyes and I shrieked

As a young girl from a conservative yet educated family, I still can’t get over the instructions my grandmother and mother used to give me as I would leave home for college every single day! As much as I hated them for wasting my time right in the morning, I developed an innate angst against males and their fraternity in general.

Being from a convent school and then to going to an all girls college watered the deep rooted phobia further more .I would often wonder why I need to protect myself and be so cautious, in a free, developing country with law and order. With my growing years looming with these kinds of thoughts, soon I found myself giving almost the same instructions to my daughter. to my horror; things hadn’t changed much since the last twenty years if not worsened! It is an agonizing feeling to be living in a country feeling most unsafe and vulnerable at anytime anywhere! Most of us are leading a life of a pigeon with closed eyes, assuming that misfortune

so hard from within that I swore to do something about it before I leave this world! The mother of the victim shamed everyone by saying that she was trying to follow “Beti bachao Beti padhao” but what about the hyenas of this sick Indian society where the girl child isn’t safe in the four walls of her home leave alone the school or tuition centre.these wolves are lurking everywhere and we and our daughters are still not safe! It should rather be “ Beta padhao , usko aurat ki izzat karna sikhao”!! It’s difficult to fathom that we are talking about 21st century here with all

its modernity and development.

What is imperative and note worthy is that only programs, campaigns, candle marches, protests, panel discussions at posh venues with top notch or high profile celebrities, sharing news snippets and pictures post crime on various social media portals isn’t going to make a difference! Something will have to be done at the grass root to the top notch level and that too as soon as possible. We need to have dynamic women leaders from every strata of society who can represent and voice their difficulties, limitations and trauma freely and confidently. The voice of a woman needs to be heard in the first place and consequently laws need to be enforced with immediate effect! Time has come to overthrow the obsolete, snail -paced, corrupt and financially and emotionally abusive judicial systems of this nation. Having educated, strong and powerful women representatives in the system at all levels is the need of the hour.

We as women need to take the bull by the horns and start a campaign at a personal level to not just empower each other but also educate and sensitize the males around us... be it a son, a brother or even a dad! High time that we get up and do our bit for this nation instead of being passive or apathetic eyes witnessing heinous crime reports travel from the front page to the last before a new one takes its place! WOMEN, DONíT TRY TO BE EQUAL TO MEN ! Anupma Khanna

P

hrases at times are repeated so often, almost in an ubiquitous manner, that after a point they cease to render the impact they were originally meant to convey. “Women Empowerment” too, I can say for India, is being used in just so many forums at so many places so many times each day that people consciously or otherwise seem to be getting so “used to” the expression that often times it fails to move hearts or stimulate minds. Many of us hear the phrase, but don’t get curious to delve deeper, and one key reason for this is just how frequently we read it or listen to it. And this in an invisible yet perceptible way is diluting the subject that for our country is real and important. What is women empowerment? Does it go beyond limited yardsticks that come to our minds by default like literacy rates, nutrition indexes and employment ratios? The answer is a big yes, and a ‘yes’ that should find an expanded paradigm. Women empowerment transcends quotas and reservation, rights and legislation; for it is a state of being.

It is a sense of independence that each woman feels in a different way within the unique context and setting of her life. Thus, for an upmarket urban woman the idea of being empowered may be very different from that of a lady in a remote village in the hills. However, women empowerment is a deep phenomenon that symbolises a state of existence marked by a non-subjugated free mind and a spirit of being as much human as anyone else. Empowerment emanates from being able to feel the dignity of being human, not “being equal to men”. The idea of empowerment for a woman should not be in comparison to another gender but an introspective assessment of her own internal self, of the respect and self-worth with which she wakes up each morning. Of the level of gratification that she has with the life she is leading in the backdrop of the potential and desires that she has. That, I feel, is empowerment in its truest sense regardless of the literacy level, professional status , vocational skills or economic or political position of a woman.. or for that matter, a man. And

men empowerment too then should be a campaign cry in many parts of the world including our country. Let us really think and try to redefine the contours of empowerment. Let us shift our focus on making women emotionally intelligent not just vocationally skilled, on inspiring them to look inwards to discover themselves not only set role models to emulate, teach them to strive to be their best in whatever they do, not try to be “equal to men”, support them to feel comfortable being themselves not only schooled.. feeling the dignity of being human in itself is an intensely powerful experience. Let us pause to make time in the humdrum of our lives to actually think, ask some very basic questions about the nature of empowerment and add a new meaning to it. In the small hours of a calm night, Some men in a pool of blood lay. With mouths gaped wide, as if to say, “Mother, we have achieved eternal peace today!” Their visages weren’t pale, Their blood was not cold. Instead they were warm within, And had an expression very bold. These valiant men are our soldiers Who, to protect their land from all plunderers, Made the supreme sacrifice, By giving up their lives. While we made merry and enjoyed To attain victory, they strived. While we lay snuggled in a cot, In the open battlefield, bravely they fought. To live for our nation was their aim, And their lives did not go in vain. They brought laurels to our country, O, Kargil martyrs, we salute thee!

FICCI FLO - A COMMITMENT TO NURTURING WOMEN AND BUILDING A STRONG ECONOMY Naina Kachroo “To awaken people, it is the women who must be awakened. Once she moves, the family moves, the village moves, the nation moves.” - Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Women are an integral part of our society but sadly are not given the reverence and the acknowledgement for their efforts that they truly deserve.

This unfortunately is prevalent not only in the rural areas, but also in urban India that continues to be constrained by its patriarchal society. Women from different social strata have faced discrimination at some point of time. Have we ever pondered over the fact that Indian women who slog in the kitchen and are given the tags of homemakers, rank nowhere in the list of top chefs in the world? No, it is not because they lack skills or are not passionate enough but lack support and opportunities for development. Even the efforts and hard work of a homemaker go unacknowledged. The life of most women in India is merely confined to kitchens, thereby not giving them the requisite exposure. Needless to say, we don’t even feel the need to question because it is rooted in our

skewed cultural mores.

Trust.

Empowering women is a vital instrument to unleash their potential and provide the space that women deserve in society. Kudos to efforts of the Government and supported by organisations like FICCI.

In my tenure at FICCI FLO, every day has been a learning one. At every step of the way, I have been fortunate enough to be mentored under towering leaders. I could not have been more privileged to be a part of such esteemed and committed community that strives hard with determined strides towards its goals and objectives. It has truly been an enriching journey, full of enthusiasm and unflinching support extended to each one as a family.

FICCI ( Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry ) is the oldest, largest and the apex business organisation in India. FLO is the women’s body of FICCI representing women from various professional and entrepreneurial frameworks. FICCI FLO aims at encouraging and uplifting women with equal and unprecedented opportunities from grass root level to top level management services. With over 35 years of experience it has been promoting entrepreneurship and professional excellence among women by providing them with vocational trainings, awareness programs, educative and interactive sessions. FLO acts as a catalyst in bringing about a positive change. The reaps and proceeds are utilised for skilling and the development of the underprivileged. A special mention here on the contributions from NGOs like Trikone Society & AAN Charitable

FICCI FLO Uttarakhand, may you reach newer heights and continue to empower, nurture and build women thereby celebrating the true essence of being a woman ! Let us together support each other and contribute to transforming our communities and the economy. Three cheers for all of us ! Naina is the Executive Secretary of FLO Uttarakhand

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a very common disease of today’s younger generation. It has taken the world by a storm with its ever increasing prevalence round the globe with almost 10 million people being affected. Its worldwide prevalence varies from 2.2 % to 26%. In India, one in every four young females is said to have PCOD. So what is PCOS? It is a multifaceted disorder with various symptoms affecting women in their reproductive age. Most women who are suffering from PCOS develop small cysts in their ovaries that is why it’s called Poly Cystic. These cysts are not harmful but lead to hormonal disbalance The primary symptoms include: Abnormal facial hair growth & baldness | Acne | Weight gain | Irregular or absence of menstrual cycle | Increased levels of male hormones So what can be done? Ayurveda, the age old science of life speaks of prevention and cure through

Aahar (Diet), Vihaar (lifestyle) and Aushadh ( medicine) , always to be read in this chronological order. Aahar, the most important pillar, the food is the fuel to our cells. Women who are suffering from PCOS should consume a balanced diet with high fibre food that helps fighting the insulin resistance. Also, lean protein sources should be added to diet. Avoid food with high glycemic index. Add a lot of greens and fruits to your diet. Make sure you abstain from reheated, processed junk food. Try to switch to unrefined salt, sugar, flour and oil. Eat good fats such as ghee, mustard oil, seeds, sesame, cashews etc. One of the chief tips given in PCOS is to reduce weight. This can be achieved by incorporating exercises to your daily routine with at least 30 minutes, 5 times a week. Any short- term weight- loss “crash diets should be avoided. Sometimes, we feel we are eating healthy and well but due to chronic underlying inflammation and metabolic disorders in PCOS, one may

The 5 nutrients which are commonly deficient in women with PCOS are: Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Zinc, Magnesium, Folate In today’s time life is bound to become sedentary. And with that comes a lot of health issues. Maintaining a proper sleep schedule is very important. An eight hour sleep where you should disconnect from all your gadgets at least an hour ago is an important thing to do. DREAMS

THE POWER OF WISDOM THAT THEY HOLD FOR YOU & HOW YOU CAN MAKE THE MOST OF THEM Komal Batra

D

reams have been fascinating creations. Do you remember having dreams? Haven’t they always been a part of our life for as long as we could remember? Even as a child, I remember waking up with dreams that turned into dÊjà vu experiences at times, while the others were oddly imaginative fabrications wilder that Walt Disney’s’!!! I am yet to come across someone who’s been dream-free all his or her lives. So what are dreams & why do we have them? Do they hold meaning for us? And how do we make best use of them? Dreams are memos of things (or feelings) that weren’t dealt with, in the waking state, intentionally or unintentionally, but need your attention. While most are forgotten upon waking up, dreams can be metaphorical or premonistic. Depending upon how intense is the emotion and how close to reality the details are, among other

parameters, we can delve deeper into what they are trying to convey to us. Interesting? We can make them our allies and be curious towards the gifts of wisdom they offer, towards centering & grounding with our true selves. As we grow up in a conditioned society, we learn the dogma that to belong we have to hide our uniqueness to ‘fit in’. This causes an unconscious estrangement with the self. This undervalued & diminished side of us shows up dramatically in our sleep state – the altered reality for our psyche. The dreams turn up their volume to bring to our awareness what wants to change in our lives!! Dreams have a heart and a pulse. They also carry a resounding message. Does it invite you to accept your shortcomings, limitations, fears or anxieties? Is it a behaviour that you judge or reject? Is it implying a solution to your waking

worry? Recurring ones are SOS calls to what you must attend to immediately, for an imminent event. Dreams are a personal safe space through which you can witness the weeds in your soul’s garden. Tend to you dream with some love and see how it unfolds magically, freeing yourself in the process. “To Know Thyself , is what dreams do, allowing you to come back to your own inner wisdom, guiding you to who you truly are and what a glorious sunshine you can be! Magical tip: Sleep with questions & happy thoughts as last thing on your mind to wake up with intentional dreams!!! UNDERSTANDING & OVERCOMING THE ëMY-CHILDí SYNDROME Dr. Geeta Khanna

A

flocal

the bi-annual flo uttarakhand newsletter

syndrome is not a specific disease but a cluster of diseases. This peculiar syndrome of the ‘My-Child’ is a complex combination of well-fed but malnourished, overweight but slump, dangerously competitive achievers with inadequate understanding of life and its values. Winners of championships with no sportsman

34

spirit, ‘chill-out’ companions with no empathy, politically ambitious with no vision. The pathogenesis of this syndrome lies in the fact that often parents rather than accepting the child as a link in the chain of propagation, consider them to be a property owned by them. The cat, lion, bird or hen deliver, nurture, tutor and Let Go! But we as

humans sometimes give them chains of emotional bonding. This cage strengthens to become traps of family personalities where each child is forced to grow into the persona dictated by the head of the family in the name of family honour and name. Dissent or disagreement or diversity is not tolerated. Independence of thought is crushed. Physical well-being is taken care of but the aspect of mental health is often forgotten. In a desire to give 100% to their child, parents at times take away much of his/her childhood. Every mother wants the child to be nothing but the best, but this should not make them infuse their children with alarmingly high doses of competition. The ‘intelligent gains’ adversely affect the cognitive ability, behavior and empathy in a child forever but it is either very little known of, or often misunderstood by many new age parents. Dressing them up for parties, presenting them as trophies in the society- a section of parents is creating an elite group of dysfunctional adolescents with very little life skills. RemedyThe first step towards reversing the symptoms of the syndrome is to identify and accept the need for change. Reforms in educational system have to be supported by collective societal efforts towards restoring fun, exploration with unconditional nutritional and emotional nurturing. Dr. Geeta Khanna is a Pediatrician and a member of the Executive Committee, FLO Uttarakhand.

MINIATURE PAINTINGS TRIPTI BEHL

M

flocal

the bi-annual flo uttarakhand newsletter

iniature paintings originated in India around 750 A.D. As these paintings were done on palm leaves in that period, they had to be miniature in nature because of space constraint. Around 960 A.D.

36

miniature paintings often portrayed religious themes. Thanks to Akbar’s love of art, Indian miniature paintings combined elements of Persian style of painting. Miniature paintings evolved

with passage of time and got influenced by different empires and rulers. These paintings were further taken forward by artist of Rajasthani school of paintings, including Kishangarh, Bundi Jaipur, Mewar, Marwar. As the name implies, Miniature paintings are colourful, handmade, small size paintings. It had intricate brushwork with colours derived from various natural sources like vegetables, indigo, precious stones, gold and silver. The most common theme used in miniature paintings comprises of Ragas, religious and mythological stories of Lord Krishna and Radha. They also narrate tales of bravery of kings and queens. These paintings are executed on material such as paper and cloth. Tripti is a member of the executive committee of FLO Uttarakhand.

HOLISTIC EATING TO A HEALTHY YOU Smriti Batta

the bi-annual flo uttarakhand newsletter

he changing season reminds us of the changes in life and in our bodies. Body weight and hormones are significantly impacted due to seasonal variations. This is the time of the year when we are at a higher risk of getting sick. The cold weather stokes our cravings for comfort foods and we turn away from healthy, whole foods and plant based meals to indulge in heavier and richer foods. BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM During cold and flu season you can boost your immune system by eating raw fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, minerals etc. SUPPLEMENT WITH VITAMIN D Supplementing with Vitamin D won’t cure you of your winter blues but will help you maintain optimal blood levels when your body isn’t converting sufficient amounts of the vitamin from sunlight. Vitamin D is also very important for bone health, aids in weight loss and boosts your immune function, which is

40

of extra significance during cold and flu season. ADD WARMTH WITH SPICES We also associate certain spices with fall and winter: Cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, etc. Think of how spicy foods heat you up from the inside. Cumin, cinnamon, chili powder, turmeric, saffron, nutmeg, ginger all add a complexity of flavor to healthy meals that will keep you crisp even on a cold night. If you get sinus infections or colds in winters, spicy food and teas containing the spices such as masala tea, lemon tea and the Kashmiri special kahwa may help you clear out your sinuses or relieve a stuffy nose. ROOT VEGETABLES Turnips, carrots, beets can withstand the cold better than other vegetables. Rich in Vitamin A and C, root vegetables can help you sail through gloomy winter days with ease. OATMEAL There is more to oatmeal than what meets

the eye. It’s more than just a convenient breakfast. It provides us nutrients in winter. Oatmeal is high in zinc (which is very important for proper immune function) and soluble fiber (good for heart health and healthy bowel movement). BROCCOLI These cruciferous vegetables may be your top winter defense against sickness. Broccoli and cauliflower are both rich in vitamin C (boosts immunity antioxidant) making our body strong and healthy. STAY HYDRATED Drink, drink, drink – water and lots of water. At least 8-10 glasses everyday. There is less moisture in the air during fall/winter. Hydrating your body can prevent cracks on the skin and help you get rid of toxins from your system. NEED FOR SYNERGY BETWEEN TOURISM & HOSPITALITY Kiran Bhatt Todaria

Y

ou would find it difficult to think of a tourism experience that did not include some form of hospitality provision. The relationship between hospitality and tourism goes hand in hand. What is the nature and scale of local people’s participation in existing tourism and hospitality enterprises? High impact tourist activity has resulted in environment disasters where Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie, Manali, Shimla have become concrete jungles with an overload of hotels, shops and crowd. The result is that they have ceased to provide leisure either to the traveller or the tourist. So to control the damage we need to do meaningful reading of environment legislation. We need to identify and guide the flow of travellers and tourists to their appropriate destinations in an ecologically sustainable way, thereby leaving untouched the environment as it stands today. All popular Himalayan holiday

destinations have suffered degradation to a large extent. The purpose of eco-tourism is that it must have minimum impact on the environment. Any development should not be at the cost of our environment. We need to leave the environment maintained and sustained for future generations. The idea is to create high value- low impact destinations. Is eco -travel good for the environment? The only good thing that is good for the environment is to leave it alone. Anything less than that is not environment friendly since any activity impacts the environment and almost always the impact is adverse. Travel destinations in the higher mountain region need minimum impact travel. In Uttarakhand we already have so many activities and destinations that can be done throughout the year but to achieve this we need to develop minimum impact and ethical tourism and encourage home stays.

Thus, the two industries can not only bring income to promote the State economy but also solve the problem of unemployment as to conduct these activities we shall be giving employment in the following verticals: Hotels | Resorts | Home Stays Lodges | Camping | Rafting Guides | Naturalist | Catering | Restaurants | Cable Car | Ski Lifts | Gandolas Transport by Air , Rail, Car , luxury vehicles Drivers | Chefs | House Keeping Tenders to locals to maintain traffic system in rafting area Tourism is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing industries with a strong relevance to economic development. It is instrumental in creating unskilled and semi-skilled jobs in the service sector as it also facilitates secondary employment in various industries. Kiran Bhatt Todaria is the Vice Chairperson of FLO Uttarakhand.

NAMITA GUPTA and providing vocational training to women self-help groups in the Kumaon region. But the project, which is closest to our heart is the sensitizing of young primary government school children of Udhamsingh Nagar about good touch and bad touch. These children come from very impoverished backgrounds and are at maximum risk of abuse as they are easy targets and can be victimized by people of such mentality. AAN has also flagged off its journey to cover 100 primary government schools of US Nagar district and DelhiNCR, conducting A w a r e n e s s campaigns on “Good Touch and Bad Touch”. Our motto is to break the silence on this topic and ensure child safety and protection, which will in turn reduce the number of POCSO cases in our region. We believe every child should be aware of his or her body and should be able

to differentiate between his general and private body parts, so that no one can encroach the sanctity of his or her body. We carry audiovisual slides and our team of volunteers – all students from private schools – conducts these workshops and explained the concept in very simple child friendly language. Volunteers teach them how to differentiate between good touch and bad touch, what their safe circle is and that they are always supposed to tell a trustworthy adult without being afraid if such an incident ever takes place in their lives. It is also emphasized that they should not blame themselves. We help the child become aware of his or her own rights, own body so that we can help create a safe society. We have successfully covered a total of 13 schools of Kashipur - Jaspur Block and in Delhi-NCR. We have eminent people of society, representatives of Satyarthi foundation & Bachpan Bachao Aandolan, child specialists, gynaecologists and also members of child welfare committee and Juvenile Justice Board as our associates. We have also attended workshops by Uttarakhand Commission of Protection of Child Rights and receive regular guidance and feedback from them. Editor’s Desk

Welcome to the first edition of flocal, and wish you an absolutely fantastic life!

O

nly dreams give birth to change, they say. In a new chapter set to be written in the development story of Uttarakhand, January 2018 marked the dawning of a dream that has since taken wings as a rising flight of positive change in the form of FLO- Uttarakhand. The vision to bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots that drove the inception of the organisation in the hill State has in a rather short time become a thriving, expanding energy. Flocal is an expression of this growing voice. It is this pleasant reformative vibe that echoes in the pages of flocal that have been crafted with love by our resident wordsmiths. We hope that the information we share about our activities and the articles that have been penned passionately by FLO members entertain, engage and inspire you. The artfully composed cover, the work of our imaginative designer Ajay Mehta, features the brilliant beginning of FLO in Uttarakhand with a stately launch at the state Chief Minister’s residence. On the cover are India’s first UN environment goodwill ambassador and celebrity model-actor Dia Mirza, FLO’s immediate past national-president Vasvi Bharat Ram, the incumbent national senior vice-president of FLO Harjinder Kaur and the founder chairperson of FLO- Uttarakhand Shilpi Arora. The cover also highlights the state chapter’s initiative against female feticide with the campaign cry of ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’ (let me live). Inside are flashes of major events like chapter launch, our flagship annual all-women car rally, the muchloved workshop life transformation by Pooja Bedi, interaction on corruption with the deputy chief minister of Delhi Mr. Manish Sisodia and Dr. S Farooq, the hugely popular Half-marathon that saw Doonites brave heavy rains to run for a good cause, talks on women’s empowerment and the fun, informal member networking meets. Then there are visually appealing briefs on the many initiatives and workshops undertaken by FLO-Uttarakhand under the spirited leadership of Shilpi Arora in a wide range of impact areas like financial literacy and investment mantras, food processing, beauty and green skill aka building women gardeners. Flipping through, we hope you enjoy reading a variety of articles written by FLOUttarakhand members that bring insightful tips on holistic living, nudge you to act on important social issues and take you on an intriguing journey into the realm of dreams all at once. An extremely special part of this publication are warm wishes and encouraging messages from our supporters both inside and outside of FLO. Heartfelt thanks to each one of you! Also, big gratitude to all our advertisers whose use of our publication to get their messages out there helped defray in part the cost of this newsletter. We also thank Ajay for working hard to make the launch edition of this publication look beautiful. flocal is a labour of love for the many people who have created it with passion and pride. And we hope it strikes a chord with your heart too! Warmly, Anupma Khanna, Editor
