The Chancellor’s Address

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

University, is thus about “how can we prepare our students in the best possible way to meet head on all the challenges of the future.

-

With these words, I would like to welcome all to Graphic Era Hill University and wish them all the success in the world as they embark on this new journey with us.

Nelson Mandela

It has been said that “Education, in a broad sense, is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character and physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense, education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another”. Education, thus, is that fundamental fulcrum which stimulates social evolution. On the global platform, India has the responsibility of transforming itself into a developed nation with a strong ethical dimension; however this is a great challenge, as this can only be achieved through the youth of today who have the power of ideas, ambition, ability and most importantly passion. I believe passionately that we are all born with tremendous capabilities and, unfortunately, we lose these as time goes by and ironically this can be directly attributed to the current system of education which stifles the creative senses rather than enhance it. Margaret Mead once said, “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” I philosophize that an enlightened and socially responsible human being can be moulded by a teacher via two unique characteristicsfirst, by inculcating curiosity and drive among the students to inquire, innovate, create and lead by example. Second, by developing a strong value system and putting the same to practice- the noble life pursued by a teacher indeed becomes a beacon to the students. We, at Graphic Era Hill University, strive to create an environment where every individual is inspired to grow beyond the realm of the curriculum to achieve personal as well as well professional growth. Our efforts are aimed at identifying human talent & passion and understanding the conditions under which this talent can flourish to the full extent. Graphic Era Hill

GEES thus catered to the knowledge and skill needs of the industry, market and time! It was an extension of Prof Dr Ghanshala’s vision of promoting and imparting education in the “true sense” which led to the creation of Graphic Era Hill University in April, 2011 by an act of the Uttarakhand State (Act No. 12 of 2011) under the aegis of Graphic Era Educational Society. In spite of being in its initial stage, the University has been growing at an exponential pace under the able guidance of our excellent leadership and dedicated services of staff and faculty members. Our presence can now be felt on the national and international platform. The aim of the University is not only to impart high quality knowledge and skills over a wide spectrum of professional and technical domains; such as engineering & technology, computer applications, commerce, humanities,

Why GEHU?

The various academic programs offered in GEHU provide an excellent opportunity to young professionals to strengthen their knowledge and develop key skills that will improve their “Employability Quotient”. In addition, the network of communication incorporating faculty members and other professionals that one develops here provides for a better productive future and makes their experience at GEHU much more enriching. How does one learn at GEHU? Lectures, seminars, workshops, practical exposure, dedicated laboratory time and tutorials provide a framework within which students are expected to explore a subject (and encouraged to do so beyond the realm of the curriculum). One is engaged in activities which help a student gain confidence and professional etiquette. Self -study and exploration is also encouraged, with motivating academic staff to support and guide their efforts at every step. Some may initially find this very challenging, but it is also rewarding! It helps a young professional develop key learning skills that will stand them in good stead in any career that they may choose for themselves. Our approach towards overall development… In today’s era, education in all domains requires a significant amount of teamwork. Several industries, where our students find employment, emphasize on the need for a “team player with good interpersonal skills”. For this purpose, we aim to incorporate project work involving student groups, and provide students with vital opportunities to

effectively work as a team. These projects would be useful learning tools where the students assimilate and implement all the concepts that they have learned in the classroom to bring the project to fruition, write a report and make a presentation. Students sometimes need mentoring, not only in technical aspects of a project but also in group interaction and effective teamwork. We ensure that this mentoring is forthcoming from our teachers. Our students have the unique advantage of acquiring team work, interpersonal and professional skills through experience. Our teachers, too play a crucial role in identifying their positions in a dynamic group; and discuss various teamwork-related problems that students might encounter and guide them through the process. In fact, the University website (www.gehu.ac.in) was initially developed by a team of students under the guidance of the Vice Chancellor and faculty members of the University. Technology offers useful tools and we utilize these effectively. Digital audio-video content,

hand-outs, multi-media facilities, state-of-the-art software are all seamlessly integrated to provide an effective learner-centric, teaching-learning process. In addition, we organize trips to specific industries so that the students get to see the “real world applications” of what they have learnt in the classroom and retain it effectively. Our Objective : Ensuring Quality Education We, at Graphic Era Hill University, have been developing a rigorous system of quality assurance for higher education, with a view to continuously assess ways to protect and improve the quality of courses, qualifications and research. This effort operates in four areas of quality assurance by: •

Designing courses that meet minimum standards.

Conducting continuous reviews of existing courses

Carrying out faculty audits.

Engaging in quality promotion and capacity development

Feedback of students regarding teaching quality obtained & modifications planned accordingly.

We are vigilant about quality and are able to ensure that appropriate systems are in place and are functioning consistently. Our Aim: Preparing YOU for a glorious future With our objective to prepare each young professional associated with us for a career and a future, outbound activity is one of the many productive and innovative ways in which we teach. Such activities aim to put the bigger picture before our students and help them further introspect and discover their hidden potentials. ‘Behavioral training’ complements the lecture inputs to maximize learning. Each such activity integrates aspects like teamwork, planning as well as coordination, and lateral thinking. The facilitators use campsites and other means like adventure activities and local people in their habitat to provide for a more qualitative learning experience.

Animation and Gaming are the various processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live action shoot. Visual effects, an integral aspect of animation and gaming, involve the integration of live-action footage and generated imagery to create environments which look realistic, but would be dangerous, costly, or simply impossible to capture on film. Visual effects using computer generated imagery (CGI) have become increasingly common in big-budget films, and have also recently become accessible to the Independent filmmaker with the introduction of affordable animation and compositing software. Visual effects are often integral to a movie’s story and appeal. Although most visual effects work is completed during post-production, it usually must be carefully planned and choreographed in pre-production and production. Visual effects are designed and edited in Post-Production, with the use of graphic design, modeling, animation and similar software, while special effects are made on set, such as explosions, car chases and so on. A visual effects supervisor is usually involved with the production from an early stage to work closely with production and the film’s director to achieve the desired effects.

KNOW IT BEFORE YOU DO IT

Mass communication is the term used to describe the academic study of the various means by which individuals and entities relay information through mass media to large segments of the population at the same time. It is usually understood to relate to newspaper and magazine publishing, radio, television and film, as these are used both for disseminating news and for advertising. Mass communication research includes most of communication media institutions and processes such as diffusion of information, and media effects such as persuasion or manipulation of public opinion. In the United States, for instance, several University departments were remodeled into schools or colleges of mass communication or “journalism and mass communication”.

With the increased role of the Internet in delivering news and information, mass communication studies and media organizations tend to focus on the convergence of publishing, broadcasting and digital communication. The academic mass communication discipline historically differs from media studies and communication studies programs with roots in departments of theatre, film or speech, and with more interest in “qualitative”, interpretive theory, critical or cultural approaches to communication study. In contrast, many mass communication programs historically lean toward empirical analysis and quantitative research — from statistical content analysis of media messages to survey research, public opinion polling, and experimental research.

The HAPPY-ness Experiment Students who come to GEHU not only leave with a vast reservoir of knowledge, but also enriched with a bag full of “happy” memories. So, when the whole world was grooving to Pharrel’s “Happy” song, our students too decided to join this worldwide movement to tell the world that they too were “happy” to be here. They wanted to share their everlasting bonds of friendships both old and new and to tell everyone that GEHU students really do rock !
