off The Cross, is Worcester’s restaurant destination.
Inspired by the roaring twenties
and thirties, this jazz age lounge offers a modern British menu, a wide-ranging cocktail menu suitable for any speakeasy,
not to mention a positively spiffing afternoon tea.
The five-storey Grade II listed
building also showcases original Victorian tiles and a Georgian
staircase, as well as a beautifully preserved 1730s panelled room
with original fireplace that’s open to the public for the first time. The Art Deco-themed ground floor café serves brunch, as
well as a sophisticated threecourse menu, both designed
by Chris Holland from BBC2’s The Great British Menu.

Visitors can also refresh with a choice of coffees, teas, smoothies and frappés.

need to be room temperature. • Oil the steak, not the pan! Then season with salt and pepper.
• Ideally, use a cast iron griddle to cook your steak and make sure it’s sizzling hot.
• Lean cuts, like fillet and rump,

• Fattier cuts, like rump and sirloin, need time for the fat to render, so cook these for longer.

Japan has been cooking for thousands of years and, as an island nation, tends to find its own way. Japan has developed a unique culinary tradition, but Japanese food is also a living part of the culture that is always evolving even today. Food is considered an art form in Japan, with many cities claiming their own regional specialty. Osaka is
known for its okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes) and Hokkaido for its quality of salmon. Within each city, most restaurants focus on one specialty. The exception are izakaya, or pub eateries, which offer typical
Japanese foods like sashimi and grilled fish alongside Western-style foods like fries, with beer and sakĂŠ.

CHINESE REGULARLY TOPS THE POLLS AS OUR NATION’S FAVOURITE TAKEAWAY, BUT HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT CHINESE FOOD? 30
China boasts four major regional
styles: Cantonese from the southern
region and Hong Kong, Sichuan from the West, Huaiyang from the East, and Beijing or ‘Northern’ food.
Cantonese style cooking was the first to become popular in the West, including
many of the more instantly recognisable dishes such as stir-fries, sweet and
sour, and chop suey. The spicier food from Szechuan and Shanghai have
become better known in recent years.
Regional varieties were developed over time according to geography, climate, history, and lifestyle. All areas use ginger, garlic, spring
onions, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar,
sesame oil and bean paste, but they combine them in different ways. Sichuan (or Szechuan) cuisine is known for bold, hot, strong flavours that come from a lot
of garlic and chillies, whereas
Jiangsu cuisine prefers to match its ingredients according to season, colour and shape.

It’s easier than ever to eat vegan in Worcester. Long gone are the days of having to hunt high and low for a single vegan option when eating out. No more salads
and couscous. These days, there is a creative and delicious world of plant-based foods spread throughout the City. We’ve all been there; you wake up one Saturday morning and all you can think about is running out to pick up something quick and easy.
Luckily for you, Worcester’s vegan businesses are
thriving, and more and more restaurants and cafes are adding amazing vegan options to their menus.
The first spot which comes to mind is BE THE CHANGE IN THE CORNMARKET. The menu is extensive, and
100% vegan. Favourites include all-day breakfasts, sausage sandwiches, filled bagels, paninis, nachos, wedges, and the crazy choice of burgers. If you’re still hungry, finish off with a cookie shake or a famous BTC brownie. DUTTY VEGAN, which you’ll find upstairs in the
SHAMBLES MARKET HALL, brings you an absolutely mouth-watering Caribbean vegan menu; hotdogs, ribs, burgers, loaded fries, chick’n nuggets and strips – the list goes on. Once you’ve eaten anything from the
menu, you’ll keep going back until you’ve eaten it all. If it’s not an all-vegan establishment you’re looking for, don’t worry. You’ll find a range of options in most of Worcester’s eateries. CHESTER’S and BODEGA CANTINA, ALL
BAR ONE and COSY CLUB all offer vegan-friendly dishes. Burritos, quesadillas, chilli; you’re spoilt for choice here.
SINGAPORE RESTAURANT ON FRIAR STREET serves traditional Chinese cuisine – but with the addition of mind-blowing vegan options such as mock crispy duck pancakes. A solid favourite!
THE OLD RECTIFYING HOUSE ON NORTH PARADE boasts an ever-changing and always delicious vegan
menu alongside its standard menu. With the addition of cocktails to die for, The Old Rec is always a crowd pleaser and the perfect place to spend an evening. As a vegan in Worcester, your usual meal at home
doesn’t have to be boring either. For those evenings when you just don’t have the energy to cook up
something as nutritious as you should, try heading
to ICELAND and picking up some No Bull Burgers. MARKS & SPENCER’S Plant Kitchen is always
expanding, with new additions such as vegan coleslaw
and ready-to-eat meals. You can even find a margherita pizza that you just need to stick in the oven. No-beef burgers, no-pork sausages, and battered cauliflower
wings are all things that you can pick up in the food hall! If you’re looking to rustle up something quick
and want to make it ‘cheesy’, make sure to pick up some nutritional yeast. You can get this in
tubs from REVITAL, or in bulk from Pack It In (a great shop to explore in the Shambles!)
Nuts are your friend – and so is your blender.
Blended cashews with a bit of water, lemon juice and nutritional yeast makes a delicious cheesy spread. Worried for the fate of your cakes? Just
replace dairy milk with soya, almond or oat milk and replace eggs with applesauce.
