EDITOR’S LETTER NEW YEAR MEANS a fourth instalment FOR STYLES . . . It’s with a sigh of relief that we deliver the fourth instalment of Worcester Styles to you. We’ve made it through another festive season, Obama took office for a second term and the world didn’t end, as predicted by those pesky Mayans. All in all we’ve entered 2013 winning. We’re as fiercely independent as ever and this edition is full of the hottest news, events, fashion and more. Oh, and we we hope you had a red-hot valentines day? If you didn’t find the time to take out your nearest and dearest we have some of Worcester’s sauciest hotspots, to help you charm that special someone.

And finally, I’d like to introduce myself. New to the team for 2013, a firm believer in buffets, karaoke and tequila; I’m determined to keep the vibe as fresh and pure as the New Year itself.

STREET LIFE

The quay to success

WINE IS FINE BUT LIQUOR IS QUICKER

Cocktail concoctions likely to impress the best. If you like your cocktails served plural and your purse strings kept tight then this might put a liquor encouraged smile on your face. The Quay is offering up a carefully concocted list of miniature creations for your boozing pleasure. Order a sharing platter and try one of each, no commitment, no scary bill, just suck it and see, so to speak.

Perfect for a group of friends or a date you’d like to see impressed, on a budget. These guys know what they’re doing, we especially liked The Brain, it’s not as disgusting as it looks (or sounds), in fact its actually quite tasty and there’s something about ordering one that makes you come over all Sci-fi and quite frankly we’re into it. If you’re not as brave as you look then grab yourself a safe Cosmopolitan.

BUZZword bingo Blamestorming Translation: Sitting around, pointing fingers at other people and arguing who should take responsibility for the bad decision/plan/outcome.

No, not a miniscule pest usually associated with ill groomed cats and dogs, but a wonderful vintage market in Worcester’s City centre. There’s nothing quite like rummaging through trunks of treasure and

emerging triumphant, a proud new owner of the most random of finds. Taking place on the first Sunday of every month, the Flea runs from 10:30am - 4:30pm and includes traders selling antique and vintage clothes, accessories, bags, books, ornaments and collectibles. So that’s 3rd February, 3rd March and 7th April. We’ll be there, game faces on, hunting for inspiration for the summer ‘look’.

B E YOU TIFUL To love ones self is the beginning of a life long romance and ladies... the first stop on the road to romance is you!

Health

Love yourself by giving your body the nutrients it needs. Eating your greens has never been so trendy, Elle Macpherson swears by her Clean&Lean lifestyle consisting of organic food and avoiding toxins such as sugar and caffeine. Why not buy the book (by James Duigan). Opt for organic dark chocolate this Easter, it’s detoxifying and therefore good for you, result.

Hydrate

Hell yes H2O! Our simple bods can’t function without it. Try to drink at least one glass as soon as you wake up, sip whilst you’re getting ready in the morning as this is the best time to flush out toxins. Aim for 1.5 litres a day, and you’ll notice a definite improvement.

Food for thought Meditation is no longer the reserve of hippies and oddballs, people everywhere are realising that a rested, clear, focussed mind equals glowing beauty on the outside. Find a class or listen to a guided CD, don’t worry if it’s your first time, everyone has to start somewhere.

Coconut Water This miracle water is 100% natural, in fact it’s the equivalent of sticking a straw into any green coconut. With 15x the potassium of a banana it’s the perfect way to rehydrate after sport and Gwyneth Paltrow holds it responsible for her cherub like complexion.

Your Strength With a gel manicure not only do your nails maintain their mirror-like shine for up to three weeks, they’re also protected and therefore stronger and longer. Go forth with confidence knowing that your nails can handle the heat. Moisturise and add a beautiful ring to complete the look.

Bright lips are the quickest way to make sure all eyes are on you. Go for a sultry red, like Chanel’s classic Rouge Allure and keep eyes as simple as possible to avoid looking like a hooker. Be sure to blot and apply two coats, so it stays on no matter what.

We have an ability to execute intense, heavy and frequent exercise, however, rest! Our 20s represent the best time to build muscular power, which consists of generating maximum force as quickly as possible. (Muscular strength, by contrast, consists of force with no regard to time.)

By now we should have the “30-something man can have it all” attitude, that’s why the 30’s are often the prime years of professional sports stars, in particular, endurance athletes.

To exploit this moment, we should head straight for the heavy weights after a 5 min warm-up. We don’t need much cardio because our metabolism still vaporizes junk on contact. Don’t worry about flexibility too much because our joints are healthy and our range of motion doesn’t need priming—yet!

We can still extend our lactate threshold (LT). LT is the point when your muscles pump out fatigue-producing lactate faster than the blood can clear it and the muscles start burning more carbohydrates than fat. By extending your LT, you can exercise at a higher intensity, burn more calories and better control your weight. Look to maintain your muscle mass and strength rather than build it.

PAGE 8 . ISSUE FOUR

Our 40s mark the decade when we shift to caring for our body in the gym, instead of punishing it. Our joints need sustained attention, nerve fibres are losing their effectiveness, which diminishes coordination. Our heart beats more slowly, cutting down the blood flow that delivers nutrients to and removes waste from joints and muscles. We lose about 0.5 percent of our muscle mass a year. Exercise protects our heart, relaxes our arteries, strengthens our bones, fights cancer, boosts our immune system, and perhaps most inspiring, it’s one of the best ways to rewire our brain!

DRESSED BY LAUREN

IN Each Issue we will be celebrating A’ LOCAL SUCCESS STORY, A PERSON OR BUSINESS THAT SHINES THE TORCH FOR THE ESTABLISHED OR UP AND COMING TALENT we have IN OUR HOMETOWN!

Lauren made her first frock after falling in love with a dress worn by Kim Kardashian “I just couldn’t find one like it anywhere, so I bought some fabric and thought I’d give it a go myself…and it worked!” Soon she was making dresses for friends, and then friends of friends, then total strangers. Her designs are

“ I want girls to feel

beautiful and special

in my dresses because they’re unique and I can make them to fit

each person perfectly.”

With stunning, form fitting, custom made designs, Lauren transforms your visions of splendour into reality. The concept is simple and the execution is effective. Describe your dream dress & ‘Dressed By Lauren’ will craft it for you. Any style, fabric, shape, fit…whatever you want, custom made to fit you.

You know the drill, you’ve got a big night coming up and you want to look hot, like, really hot. The thing is you’ve imagined your dream dress, and you can’t find it anywhere. You’ve searched all the usual high street haunts and there’s simply nothing that fits the bill. At this point you’re flustered, stressed and you’re blinking back tears of frustration, enter ‘Dressed By Lauren’.

STYLE FRENZY

gaining such a reputation that they’re easily recognisable and proudly paraded around Worcester. Lauren now receives orders for her dresses daily, most recently on ‘Take Me Out’. Using high quality cotton jersey for her popular body con dresses Lauren is now experimenting with more textures such as velvet, chiffon and leather. “My favourite dress so far has to be the floor length, gold, sequin dress that I wore for this shoot, I made it for a girls 21st Birthday. It’s so Glam I love it.”

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH style. Worcester is your runway.

Please

DO NOT BEND we take some time out to vent our frustrations if there’s one thing we won’t bend on it’s . . . The Weather forecasters use of the ‘!’ Ever since they began issuing an exclamation mark in a triangle at the end of every weather report! we’ve felt on edge 24/7!

With her hands on approach to her creations, ‘Dressed By Lauren’ looks set to go far!

The alarmist punctuation mark! The graphical representation of PANIC! Currently it could refer to the floods! Or cold weather! Or snow! However! because of the symbol’s ambiguous nature! and the ever sensational news reports! it could just as easily refer to a nuclear war! another bird flu pandemic! or a shortage of loo roll! One thing is for sure! These sensationalist weather reports, that essentially alert us to a couple of inches of snow! or an onslaught of heavy rain! have had us cancelling work! closing hospitals! and all but fleeing the city itself! Now, we’re all for a snow day! a stroll down to the river to check out the burst banks! or rushing to the supermarket to stock up before the world’s end! but honestly! this drama is getting a little out of hand! Do we really need this dystopian outlook on the weather!? Must we seriously abandon all sanity every time we see this fairly general warning sign plastered across our TV screens!? We’re not so sure!!!!!

WORCESTER’S TREATS FOR THE SENSES.

COCKTAILS &cash ews The SOUR In this issue we will be indulging your senses with the simply sublime sours and our suggestion of where to sample the finest.

Perfectly androgynous and classy, you won’t look like a call girl for ordering sours; neither will you appear a hardened alcoholic. Impressive and tasty you’ll look like you know what you’re talking about if you ask for one of these.

Sours are a traditional family of cocktails, and no drinks formula could be simpler. Booze, lemon or lime juice, sweetener, sometimes a bit of egg white; done.

see map no. 7

The trick with sours is to balance out the citrus with an equal portion of sugar

syrup. We recommend going for granulated sugar mixed with water, 50:50. Pre-prohibition masters of the art did it this way (as a pose to using superfine sugar) to give the drink a sturdy texture. Opt for good quality spirits and your sour will always be perfect. Of course, perfection can sometimes be a little dull and the classic way to pimp up a sour is to replace the sugar or the syrup with a liqueur, think Margarita or the Sidecar for a boozy reference. WORCESTER’S TREATS FOR THE SENSES.

JOIN THE CLUB We love to see Worcester peeps smashing it, that’s why we’re so chuffed for JJ Goodman. He opened the seriously successful London Cocktail Club on Goodge Street in 2004 aged only 24 and followed it up with another on Shaftesbury Avenue last year. Both bars are highly praised in the cocktail industry with JJ winning multiple awards for mixology. His menus feature experimental cocktails such as Squid Ink Sours and Bacon & Egg Coupets (be brave, they’re actually delicious). Oh, and he’s been on TV too. JJ and his business partner competed in the TV series ‘The Restaurant’ last year, further boosting the popularity of the Cocktail Club on Goodge street after it featured heavily. The two of them went on to win the competition, a decision that caused considerable controversy, mainly due to the pairs’ inability to cook! Anyway, word on the street is that JJ and his business partner James, may or may not be opening a Cocktail Club in Worcester in the next few months.

Hint: They are & it’s called keystone cocktail club. no guesses as to where it‘S located!

AIRBORN WORCESTER ARTS BASED COMPANY AirMonkey prints was started in 2007 in a garage just outside Worcester in the UK after a week long snowboarding trip to Canada resulted in a chance meeting with Scott King. “ We were so inspired by some of the work we’d seen of Scott’s that we decided that we should sell his stuff over here. We were then in Dundee sourcing some printing equipment when we heard of an exhibition that was being hosted by an artist called Tevés. When we arrived a piece caught our eye straight away, the Stormpooper canvas! An all inspired piece showcasing a Stormtrooper sitting on the toilet. After a few drinks Tevés seemed to warm to our business concept and so he too joined the AirMonkey stable. The Stormpooper Screen print really started us off, selling out in record time with a dealer in L.A. calling us constantly to

stock a shop he owned. The Stormpooper has since been spotted in many a famous nightclub and hotel in L.A.” AirMonkey has gone from strength to strength and in 2010 they set up officially and moved to a central Worcester location. This allowed them to showcase more local and national talent. Artists such as ©opyKat, ADS and Neue now have a platform that they may never have found for their work. Aria Torn has been increasingly touted as an alias of Banksy due to his style and execution, but we can safely say if he was we would have retired to the sun by now!

If you are a local artist and would like to sell your work on AirMonkey then email them at info@airmonkey.co.uk or visit www.airmonkey.co.uk

ARTs QUARTER Here’s some exciting news; the old Royal Worcester Porcelain works on Severn Street could become a major arts centre. The unused factory site has been bought by a philanthropist who hopes to transform it into a thriving cultural hub as part of an ambitious £10 million project. KKE Architects in Diglis are currently drawing up plans for the project and hope to uncover much of the site’s original beauty. The redevelopment is being described as Worcester’s answer to London’s Covent Garden, which sounds promising and with Vincent Kirk and his passionate team on board we have every faith it will be

Vincent Kirk, director at KKE Architects said “This will be a game changer for this part of Worcester, I’ve been involved in architecture for 25 years and this is the most exciting WORCESTER STYLES project I’ve seen in the city”

a tremendous success. They hope to attract talented artists and craftspeople to showcase their work as well as independent businesses such as bars and cafes to satisfy Worcester’s need for a cosmopolitan. Developers also expect that this will attract thousands of people to Worcester’s city centre and large open spaces will provide areas for people to take a break and relax within the historic surroundings. KKE say that no decisions have been made as to which part of the plan will end up being finalised and a feasibility study is currently being carried out to assess whether the vision could become a reality. We’re crossing our fingers and toes, we’d love to see something so creative in such a cool space.

We at Worcester Styles have been thinking about what we’d like to see in the space, here’s what we’ve come up with, but we’d love to hear from you on what you would like to see there too! An open air courtyard to host outdoor cinema viewings, late night impromptu music sessions, relaxing cocktail bars, delicatessens, independent cafes and unique restaurants with dancing ‘til the early hours! In the day boutique stores, galleries, fashion, music and outdoor performances. New opportunities and chance meetings between traditional and modern artisans! A stylish, buzzing quarter of life, culture and the arts seamlessly presented to visitors and locals for work, pleasure and leisure. And while we’re wishing why not a juice bar! Over to you!

Olivia Kirk is a talented and experienced landscape and garden designer, working out of a Worcestershire design studio. She has a project portfolio of private and public schemes all around the UK, as well as a number of high-profile show gardens to her name. It is the time of year when we all start planning and potting in preparation for the garden parties, lazy Sunday lounging and British BBQs. We may all think we are pretty green fingered but with a little help from Olivia, our wishes mixed with her ideas and passion and our dream garden this summer will become a reality.

Olivia really enjoys her work, helping private and residential clients with their home garden designs. Whilst some designers are happier with either the planting or hard landscaping aspects of garden design, Olivia is a passionate advocate of both, attaining a considered balance between the two. Her design signatures include the use of strong structural and architectural elements and innovative materials.

OLIVIA’S TOP POTTING TIPS Having spent the last few months in rented accommodation and therefore without a garden of my own I have been getting into the art of planting up pots. Now we have finally arrived in our new rural idyll - half an acre in Herefordshire and a half-hour commute to work in Worcester I find I am still planting up pots. This isn’t entirely out of choice but because I know a lot of plants are in the garden which I will have to get to know and watch grow. So for the time being I have to be patient - not a great virtue of mine but equally I don’t want to be digging up bulbs or dormant herbaceous treasures. These are some of the planting combinations I have found work really well in pots and will reward you with colour and perfume all summer long.

Remember to replace the top 5-6cm with well rotted manure in spring and then feed with slow release fertilizer through the growing season.

Cool blues and pinks

Zingy lavender and lime Alchemilla mollis, Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’ and Salvia x sylvestris ‘Viola Klose’ The Alchemilla (Ladies Mantle) is the anchor plant here with lovely pleated leaves that raindrops collect in and sherbet lime flowers in spring time. The deep purple Lavender looks great with it in Spring and once those flowers have faded the electric blue Salvia flowers take over from July to September. A bit of deadheading when the mood takes you keeps this trio looking good and the bees will love it too.

Nepeta racemosa ‘Walker’s Low (catnip) and Geranium sanguineum var. striatum. The deep violet flowers of the nepeta form an elegant mound with the Geranium filling in and generally lolling about round the edges of the pot. It is a very pretty plant with bright pink buds opening out into paler pink flowers that will last from June right through to September.

Rosa ‘Warm Welcome’ I have had this rose in a pot for 2 years now and it hasn’t complained at all. Even with a little bit of neglect here and there is has looked cheery, smothered in bronze/orange flowers all summer long and really healthy blue/green leaves - not a spot or yellow leaf in sight. What better way to welcome visitors into your garden than with a Warm Welcome?

Now the rose has become quite sturdy I am thinking of going for a real eyeball popping combination and planting a Clematis ‘Rebecca’ to grow through it. ‘Rebecca’ is a deep red with flowers that look like satin and is just gorgeous. I bought one from Raymond Evison for my last garden and left it there as it was very happy growing through a golden hop.

Become Legend. Ride Ruroc. Since 2006, British based Ruroc have been providing world leading full face protection for skiiers and snowboarders. You may have even seen specifically modified versions of these bad boys used by the F1 pit crews of McLaren and Red Bull. We were lucky enough for Gloucester based Ruroc to send us an RG-1 Hazard to test on our trip to Les Arc last month and boy did we love it! Equipped with Italian made, dual-pane lenses and 180° field vision OTG goggles, the RG-1 helmet uses unique antifog technology to channel air through the helmet for perfect vision and comfort. When we put the helmet on we couldn’t help but feel like we needed lightsaber ski poles, the helmet was extremely comfortable and came with enough spare padding to make it fit any freakishly shaped head. Toe tapping, head nodding, face twisting tracks worth a note.

Must buy music David Bowie: The Next Day.

- by Rosie Spaughton of youthcomm

The Next Day will be David Bowie’s 24th studio album, to be released March ‘13 and is the first album with new material to be released in ten years. Bowie’s already kicked up a stir with the release of the track Where Are We Now? The release was timed perfectly to coincide with Bowie’s 66th Birthday. It’s a chilled out track reminiscent of his earlier Waterloo Sunset. Remaining true to the brand, Bowie’s video is a little freaky, however it made a change to see him wearing jeans and a T-shirt, as opposed to a sparkly spandex number. I’m anticipating the album to be amazing! Pre-order. It’s Bowie, need I say more?

Green Day- Uno, Dos Tre! Since September 2012, Green Day has slowly been releasing three albums, Uno, Dos and Tre! over the course of 4 months. The idea was that front man Billy-Joe and clan got together and spent months in the studio, recording songs for the concept albums, which were the pre-party album, the party album, and the hangover album. Tre! was due to be released in January 2012, however, Billy-Joe preceded to have a meltdown, checked into rehab and

the album got released early, making the entire set available to buy now. Although I’m usually not that big a Green Day fan, these albums are special. Asides from Billy-Joe freaking out on stage at the iheart music festival, throwing down his mic and walking off stage, the whole sound has changed, along with their music video director. The new albums and witty videos have received much attention, and the final track of the trilogy The Forgotten was the track for the complete Twilight saga.

Defected- MOST RATED 2013. This year has been a truly exceptional one for Defected. For lovers of all things house, MR2013 should really need no introduction. A consolidation of all the DJ essentials and biggest records of the moment, presenting them in one easy to consume package which is only £4.99 on itunes at the moment.

WHAT TO

IN THE LES MISERABLES

Pitch Perfect Whoever donned Pitch Perfect as ‘the new Bridesmaids’ were not wrong. Starring Anna Kendrick as the vocally talented female lead and funny girl Rebel Wilson as ‘Fat Amy’ this film gives you modern day pop songs, sung in perfect acappella harmonies. If you’re not into the X Factor then it sounds as if it would be boring, but never fear, the film is

broken up by spectacular comedic moments (think projectile vomit and plenty of ‘fat girl’ humour). You’ll want to own this on DVD, the soundtrack is also a MUST. This film is ‘PERFECT’ but caution to all readers: I’d recommend this as a chick flick, boyfriends may end up tuning out.

Haters of musicals, cover your eyes NOW, but perhaps, if given the chance, Les Mis could convert you? Every actor starring plays their role perfectly, this film is one of those classic watch again and again musicals, just like Mama Mia, but less girlie and with more history and bloodshed. Les Mis is the Oscar’s darling this year, with Anne Hathaway losing stones and shearing off her hair for her role. Put simply; it’s amazing. You’ll be singing along in no time, I dreamed a dream of time gone by....

LIFE OF PI

Watching Life of Pi was more like going on a spiritual journey for me than watching a film. Based on the 2001 fantasy novel by Yann Martel, the film tells the story of an Indian boy named Pi who gets shipwrecked for 227 days, stranded on a boat with a tiger named Richard Parker. Director Ang Lee, known best for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, encaptures the majesty of the animals and the beauty of India perfectly. The film is magical, with themes of faith, religion and love being tested as the viewer will cry and beg for Pi to survive.

DJANGO Deep South, 1858. Django (Foxx) is a plantation slave bought and freed by ex dentist come bounty hunter, Dr King Shultz (Waltz). A partnership is formed and the duo spend a winter hunting bounties in exchange for Shultz leading Django to the slaver who owns his wife.

Tarantino doesn’t shy away from displaying the brutality of slavery and, as expected, the shoot outs are no less than a bloody affair, but the dark humour adds a quirky balance leaving at its heart a story of love and a fight for justice. The original soundtrack is awesome. A must buy!

WHAT TO DO NEAR YOU

JINNEY RING

WHAT’S THEre to SEE SPONSORED BY Odeon CINEMA WORCESTER.

We love the Jinney ring, a great combination of culture, craft and atmosphere. We have another reason to want to pay the Jinney Ring a visit; Chocolate Deli have their own shop there, additional to their Friar Street store where they hand make beautiful chocolates. Even as you approach the store you are met by the smell of molten, delicious goodness. Their secret recipe includes banoffe, wild cherry and tropical lemon, we are sure you will find something that will tantalise your taste buds!

REGAL CINEMA EVESHAM Out There

This recently restored cinematic dream first opened its doors in 1932 and is now back in action after a long period of closure. After an expansive refurb the Regal has been returned to its former glory and we can’t get enough of it.

Check out the Jinney Ring website for upcoming events, channel 4 are filming for a new series there in Febraury and everyone’s welcome. Otherwise hat sales, crafts shows and sponsored dog walks are on offer, in a beautiful, rustic, dog friendly, setting.

The art deco design, the candle lit tables, the snug sofas for you and your lovebird; we don’t know where to start with the list of things we love about this place, the box office even prints old-fashioned tickets! Offering far more than an ordinary cinema, the coffee shop and gallery turns into a wine bar in the evening alongside the Circle and Auditorium Bar, where you’re welcome to drink throughout the film. If you want a more traditional style of seating go for the regular seats or one of the four Royal Boxes and enjoy the show!
