NEWS ANJA & FRIENDS RAISE FOR WORCESTER CAMPAIGN

MR BINDLES RECOMMENDS

Westlife star Brian McFadden has helped businesses from across the county raise £40,000 for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign. The event, which was backed by sponsors including Taittinger, Ron Harris Racing and Listers Group, saw more than 200 people contribute towards the £1.8 million campaign for a new, dedicated breast unit at Worcester Royal Hospital. Anja, who is a patron of the charity, said: “I have been a supporter of the Breast Unit Campaign for several years and I’m delighted that we have been able to give it such an enormous boost.”

There are 500 people across Worcestershire diagnosed with breast cancer every year but they have to share crowded clinics with other services and cannot get all the investigations they need on their first assessment. They can also get referred to hospitals outside of the county. All of this makes the already stressful experience of living with breast cancer even more difficult. The campaign aims to change that. THE SOLUTION: This here’s the purgatory of hair loss — you still have a full head of hair, but it’s so thin that your scalp is clearly visible from certain angles. It gives a little of that natural oil weight you get when you don’t shower for a day, and that’ll soften and calm your brawny hair down. Next, run through some of the heavier stuff, like a clay pomade, to lock things into place. You’ll need less of the pomade now since your hair has been pre-chilled.

A gel will always look harder and give your hair a hold. A lot of men just buy the strongest gel they can find which is a mistake. In actuality, you need to take into account what kind of hair you have. The thicker your hair, the stronger the gel is that you should use. Mousse is essentially just a wet form of gel. Because it’s a wet product, it’s ideal for longer hair – perfect if you’re a Jim Morrison-style rock star. For shorter hair, try looking more towards gels. Cream, wax, clay, putty and gum have almost no hold at all and are for creating texture or extra shine. They should always be applied to dry hair. For an idea of how the product will dry on your hair, check out how hard, matte or shiny it is when it’s still in the tin. It will be the same on your hair.

...HANDLE A HANGOVER

Water, wine, water, wine

Berocca before Booze

Don’t get us wrong, we love free booze but there’s just too much of it knocking around this time of year. Avoid taking advantage by drinking a glass of water between every alcoholic drink. It’s the oldest trick in the book but it might save you from a shameful 9pm smack-down.

We’ve heard that drinking a berocca before you start the party can limit a hangover, it’ll top you up with vitamin B before you even start depleting it.

Why did the Mexican push his wife off a cliff? Tequila If you’re offered shots go for tequila, not only are Mexican spirits bang on trend they’re actually healthy, kinda. Made up of simple sugars from the Agave plant good quality tequila won’t spike your blood sugar like other alcohol, thus giving you a less horrific hangover. Go glam or go home Listen, the party season really isn’t a time to play it cool, more is more. Flat shoes, combats and trackies ain’t your mate. Fur, sequins and suits & boots are totally invited to the party. Don’t be afraid to sparkle.

...HAVE SWAGGER

D O

N O T

Sleep it off Definitely one of the easier approaches, if you’re lucky enough not to have to go to work or worse, endure a family Christmas lunch then sleep is certainly your friend. Exercise A brisk walk may be all you can handle but the fresh air will do you good. Choose a leafy environment as studies show that half an hour a day in greenery can boost serotonin levels, plus there’ll be plenty of hiding places, should you wish to curl up and feel sorry for yourself.

GIRL STUFF

PAMPER, POWDER AND GLIDE THROUGH YOUR DAY WITH STYLE & FINESSE.

Pre-Party – how to get fresh, dewy skin Frost, wind-chill, central heating and generally whack weather can leave your skin sad. Keep your complexion luscious by building a succulent base, all the better for piling on that party glamour.

Dark circles When you need to banish dark circles but your Touche Eclat won’t cut it then use Benefit’s Erase Paste. Take a concealer brush and use a patting motion to apply beneath the eyes and up to the bridge of your nose. Smooth with your finger and let the orange and yellow tones cancel out the blueish red tones of your skin.

Exfoliate Exfoliation is essential for proper skin renewal. Train your skin to renew itself regularly by exfoliating every other night. It’s important to wet fingertips but leave your face dry when using a scrub, rub in small circles for 3 minutes and then

Cream cleanser

Soap cleansers strip nutrients and good oils from your skin resulting in dry flakes or a sebum overload. Switch to a good cream cleanser and allow it to soak in before removing with a flannel or muslin cloth for suppler skin.

Clean your brushes

Your brushes don’t just accumulate makeup, they also absorb oils from your skin. Clean your brushes at least weekly to avoid breakouts, we recommend using Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, its delicate so it won’t damage them and its cheap and cheerful too.

Layered moisture The glowing, dewy look favoured by celebrities can be achieved by layering moisture. After cleansing use a serum followed by your daily moisturiser and then spritz with a toning facial mist, leave this to soak in for 20 minutes before continuing with your make-up.

Primer

A seriously important step that will determine how groomed you look and how long you’ll stay looking this way. An oil free primer will ensure your makeup sticks whilst filling out any fine lines or pores, providing a smooth base for your make-up.

in big circles using your palms for 20

Highlight

seconds. Splash with water to remove. Try to do this on the night before your big night out!

Use highlighter to show off your best bits. Smooth along cheekbones, jaw-line, the bridge of your nose and cupids-bow for a glossy finish.

THE TRENDS SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SYLE

Mayor of Worcester Councillor Pat Agar joined staff at Ice Fine Jewellery to officially welcome the business to its new premises in CrownGate Shopping Centre.

THE FACE. Last issue we asked you, our readers, to send in your photos to become the face of Worcester Styles and Toni&Guy Worcester for this issue. Our lucky winner was Jamie Clarke who won a photoshoot, his hair styled and is soon to feature in Worcesters Toni&Guy shop display. A huge thanks goes to the Toni&Guy team. Jamie is currently taking bookings via several modelling agencies and we wish him every success!

HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO BE THE NEXT FACE OF STYLES?

The shop, which has been based in Reindeer Court for the past nine years, opened in Chapel Walk last week to coincide with the start of the Victorian Christmas Fayre and the third day of late-night shopping in the city, in the unit formerly occupied by The Bag Store.

Send your best shot to style@worcstyles.co.uk and you could be in with the chance to be the next FACE of Styles.

The new store stocks a wider-range of products and exclusive brands, including Bullets 4 Peace which turns bullet cases into jewellery to promote peace and harmony in war zones, as well as a significantly enhanced range of diamond products including Ice’s signature range of blue diamonds. The shop in Reindeer Court will remain for now as an outlet store.

Ice Fine Jewellery’s inhouse designer, Stacey, also takes centre stage in the new store, interacting with customers and turning their dream jewellery designs into reality using computer-aided design (CAD). Ice Fine Jewellery is the latest in a series of new stores opening throughout CrownGate including independent retailers Tallulah Blue and Coffee Dough in Chapel Walk and The Golf Shop in Friary Walk.

Mr Quartermaine said: “We’ve had a good first week, we’ve been very busy. I’m really happy with the style and the finish and the location is superb. Our existing customers love the new store and we’ve seen a lot of new faces too.” Ice Fine Jewellery 32 Chapel Walk Crowngate Worcester WR1 3LD facebook: icefinejewellery 01905 28333

THE TRENDS WORCESTER’S TREATS FOR THE SENSES

PAPA’S THE PLACE Have you perused Papa’s paninis? If not we suggest you take the hop, skip and a jump down to New Street to one of Worcester’s latest café offerings.

VICTORY-AN-nual Another year and another gut busting Victorian fayre has passed, Worcester’s 21st in fact! Worcester Christmas Fayre is the leading Victorianthemed street market in the West Midlands and this year more than a hundred stalls filled the atmospheric streets of Worcester’s historic heart.

Warming mulled wine, the local arts and crafts maker area, international area, festive gifts area and food court. For us at Styles this weekend is all about the attractions, the range of independent boutiques and eating in the city’s many cafés, pubs and restaurants. Put a fork in us, we’re done!

Papa’s Caffe, owned and run by Ali Cokaj, has poised itself on the Friar Street end of New Street. Offering a long list of delicious breakfasts and lunches, ciabatta sandwiches and toasted paninis, to name two that we have weekly! Papa’s Caffe has an abundance of character and the largest outdoor area. We love their motto; “ We love to make coffee for the city that loves to drink it!”

We love supporting the blossoming independent cafés in Worcester and this is another great example of one! With a passion for creating unforgettable experiences, Papa’s is open to anybody who wants to enjoy a great atmosphere, spend some down time on their own or perhaps meet new people. Ali knows the importance of giving you the best cup of coffee possible paired with an inviting atmosphere. We go for the food and stay for the atmosphere, if you haven’t been yet make the effort to visit, you won’t be disappointed!

HOMEGROWN WE CELEBRATE THE HOMEGROWN SUCCESS FROM OUR FAIR TOWN.

IN Each Issue we will be celebrating A LOCAL SUCCESS STORY, A PERSON OR BUSINESS THAT SHINES THE TORCH FOR THE ESTABLISHED OR UP AND COMING TALENT we have IN OUR HOMETOWN! -

I always enjoyed drawing but was told to go down a CORPORATE route IN graphic design. SO then I just pushed myself as an artist. With 2013 coming to a close, 2014 looks certain to follow on from the success of the past year which saw Aymsdesigns sell artwork to her new superstar friend Rihanna. From a studio at her home in Worcester, 21 year old Aymi’s achievements are truly incredible, attracting the attention of huge stars such as Miguel, Danny Wellbeck and Tom Daley along with her latest and “Greatest achievement” a personal invite to meet Rihanna at her Diamonds World Tour. Easy going Aymi has every right to be proud of her success and is rightfully extremely driven to continue it “I just want to be as successful as I can be,” she explains.

and after an inspiring turn of events and a conversation with Rihanna on Twitter, the Bajan superstar expressed her desire to own the print and invited Aymi to her show in Manchester so she could collect the piece and meet the artist behind the work. “Having Rihanna personally invite me to her show to give her a painting I did” is Aymi’s greatest achievement to date, she explains.

For Aymi, a big fan of British graffiti artist Banksy and artist and designer Russell Mills, art has always been her passion. Following from school she studied graphic design at Worcester Tech College and then went on to continue studies in graphic design for a further two years at the University of Birmingham. However it was at Uni where she realised that art was what she really wanted to pursue

Aymi’s advice to anyone looking to follow in her footsteps is “just keep going, work hard and the rest will follow!”

Aymi’s short term desire is to have her first major exhibition while she’s still 21. Having started with nothing else but a passion for art she has achieved great success at such a young age leaving a bright pallet of colours to paint her future.

To follow Aymi’s success and future projects visit her website www.Aymsdesigns.com, Like her Facebook page www.facebook.com/ Ayms.designs and follow her on twitter and Instagram at @Aymsdesigns.

YOUR PREMIER LETTING AGENCY

Pave your way to property success but mind the step! One way or another, the property market plays a part in everyone’s lives at some stage - whether it’s buying, selling, investing or the rising trend, renting. Here in Worcester we continue to reap the benefits of our unique geographical position and transport links – two factors which are helping to increase the buoyancy of the city as a whole and of course, our thriving property market which is benefiting from new investment and regeneration plans in many commercial and residential corners. The uplift in Worcester’s property market has seen a marked increase in the number of buy-to-let properties which are being mainly let to professionals, families or students. In turn that is seeing a growing number of landlords – some experienced and some who are new to the industry.

But experienced or novice, what boxes should any landlord look to tick? Here are our top five quick tips: ☑ If you can’t commit the time to managing your property – engage a letting agent to co-ordinate everything for you. ☑ Always keep an up-to-date inventory of all items within the home such as furniture and high value pieces. ☑ Make sure you have all certified inspection reports for areas such as electrics and plumbing. ☑ Don’t be scared to undertake regular inspections of the property – this will also help you identify areas which need attention – inside or out. ☑ Get to know your tenants and their long-term plans – knowing when they plan to leave will assist greatly in your preparations when looking to market the property again.

Who Are Premier Places? Premier Places will take care of every aspect of renting your property – Advertising, accompanied viewings, referencing, drawing of agreements, arranging inventory, check in, registering the deposit, collecting rent, arranging maintenance, conducting periodic inspections, renewal of agreements, serving notice for possession, arranging closing report, returning deposit to tenant as required. “We are absolutely delighted to be opening Worcester’s first ever burger bar. Our succulent burgers are prepared with style and ensure our guests can enjoy quality cuisine. It’s great news for the local economy too and we will be working alongside local suppliers to add an extra something to Worcester’s dining experience.” Ice-cream maker Bennetts, based in Lower Wick, Worcester is creating an exclusive ice cream for The Green Room, strawberry and honeycomb cheesecake.

BLOODY MARY Deemed a “savage combination of tomato juice and vodka” by master bartender Jack Townsend half a century ago, the Bloody Mary is one of our fail-safe hangover cures. Usually spiced with flavourings such as Worcestershire sauce (big up!), Tabasco, horseradish, celery, salt, cayenne pepper and lemon this soupy treat can be made in a variety of ways; swap vodka for whiskey and drink a Bloody Smoke or with gin for a Red Snapper. Low in calories, high in…tomato juice, you can’t go wrong with this savoury lifesaver.

The Green Room is open every day as well as Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. With seating for more than 100 people, The Green Room is also open for private parties.

Here are our top hangover venues and reasons for you to visit : The Old Rectifying House Bloody well made The Quay The Bloody great Sunday Roast Bolero Bar Bloody great atmosphere The Olive Branch Bloody good tapas Keystones Cocktail Club Bloody cool PARTIEs

W O R C E S T ET H R ES ET R NES N ODR SY T R E A T S NEW INDEPENDENT COFFEE SHOP OPENS TO TREAT WORCESTER’S TASTE BUDS

We have been following Coffee Dough’s progress in CrownGate intently since we heard of it’s opening. We got in touch with the owners and asked for a snoop. This petite yet perfectly formed café bar serves the very best in drinks and freshly made sandwiches and paninis, in a styleled environment that allows the customer to sit back, relax and watch Worcester wander by due to it’s huge glass frontage.

Coffee Dough, CODO for short, was founded by three local Worcester businessmen who pride themselves on the quality and service they provide from their already successful combination of businesses. They intend to deliver the same outstanding service with CODO. It’s our morning ritual for a delicious ‘Blend No.5’ flat white and chocolate twist to take-out and we have been sampling their variety of toasted foccacias and paninis. We have most recently purchased their ‘blend no5’ ground coffee so we can enjoy their CODO coffee even when we can’t make it to the shop!

What we love most? The smoothest coffee blend, the ability to people watch to our heart’s content, the staff, the gold coffee machine and the knowledge that we are supporting a Worcester independent! Visit them in CrownGate, you will be glad you did!

Please

DO NOT BEND IF THERE’S ONE THING WE WON’T BEND ON IT’S ...

...Christmas! Don’t you just love it. Christmas is here. Not that we didn’t get enough warning. We glimpsed at the adverts, peeked at the signs and turned our heads from the Christmas decorations and cookies that were filling the shelves of every supermarket in town, since October! Yet we decided to ignore it, to put it off and here we are now. A handful of days until the oh-so-joyful occasion and still, still after promising ourselves year after year that it would never happen again, we haven’t bought one single present card or wrapping paper yet.

So here we are, all of us surely-Christmascan’t-be-THAT-close-yet sort of people, running around like headless chickens, in the quest for the greatest present, yet you have a feeling it might be socks and slippers again this year. In the middle of all of this, you still notice those mystical creatures, the “organized buyer”. The ones who had finished their shopping in June and there they are now, sipping a hot cup of coffee, inhaling the heavenly smell of mince pies and gingerbread and smirking triumphantly.

In my defence, as a man, it’s naturally ingrained in my subconscious to despise any form of shopping. Not that the idea of squashing myself into a shop full of busy mums, screaming children and last minute buyers doesn’t appeal to me, that sounds heavenly, no really, honest! OK who am I kidding, I can’t think of anything worse. But you can’t say to your beloved on Christmas day that you had put so much time and effort into the thought of their preset that it was too late to actually get it. You wish you could, but you can’t. Can I? No, no, I can’t.

This is what they were waiting for, after receiving funny looks for mentioning the C-word in the middle of summer, they have now earned the right to sit on their thrones and smirk “I told you so”. No matter how much you hate them right now, God, you really wish you were in their shoes. But don’t despair, it will all be worth it when you’re sitting in front of your Christmas banquet, all of your worries erased by the abundance of food and laughter and the thought that it’s another twelve months until next Christmas. This time you promise, you swear, it will never happen again!

THERE ARE THOSE OF US WHO CAN’T GO THROUGH THE DAY WITHOUT OUR MORNING, LUNCH, AFTERNOON AND EVENING HIT OF CAFFEINE. FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE YET TO GET THE CAFFEINE BUG, TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT YOU’RE MISSING OUT ON.

CAN’T KICK, WON’T KICK THE CAFFEINE HIT. Espresso

Flat White

Cappuccino

Irish Coffee

A strong black coffee made by forcing steam through dark-roast aromatic coffee beans at high pressure in an espresso machine. A perfectly brewed espresso will have a thick, goldenbrown crema (foam) on the surface. If the crema is good, the sugar you add will float on the surface for a couple of seconds before slowly sinking to the bottom.

The flat white comes from Australia and New Zealand and is a fashionable drink for those fed up with milky coffees. Differing from a latte in that flat white consists of either finely frothed milk or none at all and twice the amount of coffee.

A true cappuccino is a combination of equal parts espresso, steamed milk and milk froth. Sprinkle with unsweetened cocoa powder or grated dark chocolate.

Hot coffee, Irish whiskey brown sugar, coffee and heavy cream are combined to make this heavenly, boozy heart warmer. Created in Ireland and popularized at the Buena Vista Café in San Francisco, we can’t get enough of this one.

Latte A single shot of espresso to three parts of steamed milk. Drink it “skinny” with skimmed milk.

Caramel Macchiato Combine espresso, caramel and foamed or steamed milk. Often, vanilla is added to provide extra flavour. Drizzle with caramel sauce, of course.

Mocha Similar to a latte but featuring rich, dark hot chocolate, perfect for those with a sweet tooth. Try a white Mocha made from white chocolate.

GEEK CHIQUE The two heavyweight gaming consoles battle it out

CONTROLLERS AT THE READY, NEXT GENERATION GAMING IS HERE.

PS4

The launch of the next generation consoles has been and gone, the PS4 & Xbox One are here. Xbox was the first of the next generation consoles to hit the streets and to everybody’s surprise, resembled an oversized 80’s VHS recorder. The PS4 is smaller in size compared to the Xbox One and looks a little bit sleeker thanks to its angular shape. Xbox One launched at £429 while the PS4 has a more palatable starting price of £349, it’s surely 2-0 to the PS4 already? The insides however are very similar with both running x86 octa-core CPUs which were built by the same manufacturer, AMD. PS4 has also now added voice recognition to it’s array of new features, something the Xbox has had for a while. With blu ray taking off in the movie world Microsoft have added a blu ray player to the Xbox

one, something the Playstation has had for years. So where does that leave us here at Styles Headquarters? Well firstly it’s down to what your friends are buying, you don’t want to be playing the new Call Of Duty on your own. Sony have now introduced a new yearly subscription which Microsoft have already been charging for on the Xbox 360, hopefully this will improve the online experience for Playstation users, the PS3 had plenty of connection issues. However, only Microsoft is going to lock apps behind its Xbox Live paywall. Sony has confirmed that streaming video content like Netflix, Hulu Plus and MLB.TV on PS4 won’t require a Playstation Plus subscription. You may want to think about this before you make a decision? For us at Worcester Styles, PS4 gets takes the crown, but only just.......

THE STYLES TOP THREE WINTER DESTINATIONS

Iceland, Northern Lights break

Zermatt, Switzerland

Pas de la Casa, Andorra

The Northern Lights break in Reykjavik is something special, with a number of stylish hotels to choose from. Explore the capital city of Reykjavik and some of Mother Nature’s most jaw - dropping sights. Flying direct to Iceland for three or five night stays are usually the most popular. While you’re there you’ll get the chance to experience the surreal Northern Lights and the unique landscapes of the Golden Circle, tours can normally be prebooked or booked on arrival.

The mountain village of Zermatt is one of the great ski and climbing centres of the world. Nestled in a deep valley enclosed between steeply scarped mountains, it is dominated by the huge and gracefully curved pyramid of the Matterhorn. What strikes people most often is the silence as there are no cars here. The air is fresh and alpine. But more than this, you immediately feel a part of the village.

Pasa is a lively ski resort and is great value for money. It is part of the extensive GrandValira ski area set in the spectacular Pyréneés mountains, Pas de la Casa is the highest resort in Andorra. It generally has an excellent snow record and has a very modern lift system, you will find plenty of off piste action alongside wide, well groomed, confidence boosting tracks, perfect for the snowboarder.

Please be aware that the northern lights are a naturally occurring phenomenon, so whilst we hope you will get to marvel at them during your excursion most operators can’t guarantee that you will be able to see them. A three-night Northern Lights break in Reykjavik, with a stylish hotel stay and an optional Golden Circle tour, flights from Gatwick in January, three nights in a Deluxe room, breakfast and one three-course dinner for two isn’t as expensive as you might think!

From £559 PP

www.secretescapes.com

The main street bustles happily with pedestrians. There are no impersonal tour buses belching out noise, fumes, and package tourists. Everyone is here because they love mountains. Walking through the cobbled paths of town, between the ancient sunburnt barns and chalets, you catch your first glimpse of the Matterhorn and know you have come to the right place. There are a fast amount of great places to eat in Zermatt although it’s not cheap. The skiing here is second to none and everytime you catch a glimpse of the Matterhorn it does take your breath away. Staying in a catered Chalet for 7 nights flying from Birmingham in February.

FROM £658 PP

Pas de la Casa is renowned for its thriving nightlife with plenty of bars and clubs to choose from to keep you going during aprés ski. There are usually some great two for one offers when you hit the bars straight off the slopes which if timed correctly can save you a nice bit of cash. Andorra is also Tax free so you can grab yourself some bargains before you fly home. There are some great deals flying from Birmingham in January.
