STUBBLE TROUBLE: TO BEARD OR NOT TO BEARD?

Throughout history beards have signified prestige and gravitas and in the last year, they’ve taken centre stage in the world of fashion. If you want to look sharp, forget the clean-shaven look and opt for the designer stubble. Facial hair is no longer a by-product of puberty; it is now an art form, a fashion accessory and a means of self-expression for men. But, it hasn’t always been this way. In the past, if there was even as

much of a slight whiff of stubble during the week, colleagues would be asking how my night was, or friends would be rallying around me in a state of panic, thinking I was about to slip into a state of depression. Admittedly, any facial fuzz used to be a sign of laziness, usually connected with a late night, a hangover, travelling, winter bad habits or homelessness. Now, thanks to David Beckham, Jake Gyllenhaall, Ryan Gosling, Ben Affleck and Chris O’Dowd,

the beard has taken on a new life form. It is the epitome of cool. A tailored suit, expensive watch and designer shoes simply doesn’t cut it any more, it’s all about the hair on your face and how you wear it. If that wasn’t enough, there is even a blog dedicated to beards, to fuel our fascination with ‘beard porn’ and inspire your next facial hair extravaganza 100beards.tumblr.com

WE’VE OUTLINED BELOW A FEW HELPFUL TIPS, SO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR BEARD IS TOO BIG: 1. You can wring it out at the end of the night for an extra drink 2. You don’t need a duvet to keep you warm at night 3. You have food for a week, should your fridge be empty 4. You’re contemplating topiary 5. You buy your grooming products from a local hardware store 6. You have sheepdogs trying to round it up

LEGS, BUM AND TUMS?

With the growing popularity of facial fuzz, the obvious answer is no to shaving, but yes to trimming that designer stubble. For now, the Gillette Razor has been pushed aside in favour of the electric clipper and chin bristles are now a serious fashion accessory. But, what if I was to add the word ‘legs’ into to the initial question? Well obviously for a girl, yes daily! I mean you don’t keep a hedgehog as a pet do you, so why would you want to date one? And, what if I was to further add ‘your legs’ into the equation? Well, a few years ago the general response from the ordinary man would have been a straight no are you kidding me! Now however, there’s trouble trending in the male grooming arena and an increasing number of chaps are shaving, waxing, veeting or lasering off their leg bristles. Having legs as smooth as an Action Man is common practice in the sporting world and you’ll find most swimmers, cyclists and triathletes have been doing this for years, since the turn of 20th century. Among the Lycra set,

smooth legs are touted as a rite of passage and a performance enhancing procedure. Apparently, the practice not only helps athletes to mentally ‘feel faster’, it physically reduces drag and ultimately shaves off milliseconds but we’re not all Chris Hoy, Alistair Brownlee or Michael Phelps, are we? Saying that though, the modern man is a lot more ‘body conscious’ than our caveman predecessors and the male grooming routine is expanding by the day, so maybe we should give it a go? At least by shaving our legs we can accentuate our muscle definition rather than hide it and we can raise the bar with women, too, and show them how to do it properly! Now that is a challenge I would like to take on!

Neville competition Father’s Day is on 15th June 2014, why not give your dad a helping ‘shaving hand’ to look sharp with Neville. To be in a chance to win a Neville gift set answer the following question... Fathers day is what date? Email your answers to dad@worcstyles.co.uk and the winner will be picked on the 5th June 2014.

Now how far do we go lads? ‘Legs, Bums and Tums’ turns out isn’t just the name of a ladies workout... think about it.

GIRL STUFF

Good news for lazy girls Spring’s biggest trend is laid-back and fuss-free old world braids, mixed textures and simple adornments.

Old World Braids Plucked out of the romantic past, the messy milkmaid or crown braid is

making a come back. This lived-in,

rumpled updo oozes folkish innocence and connects the old-world romantic look with todays rebellious attitude.

MIXED TEXTURES Effortless soft waves are recapturing

our imagination this season. Whether your hair is chin-length, waist-length

or in-between, there’s nothing quite so simple or effective than some loose

easy, waves. Forget Hollywood curls, think more randomly placed, tousled

locks and care-free mermaid tresses.

Hair Accessories This season is all about delicate embellishments that evoke the elegance of eras past: Add a scattering of tiny flower blossoms to a messy up-do for an enchanting fairytale look. If timeless elegance is what you are after, then complete your low regal ponytail with a leather-embellished headband.

GET THE LOOK IN JUST A FEW MINUTES Part your hair down the middle and split into two sections; Holding one section in your hands, divide this into another two sections; Take a small piece of hair from the outside of one section and pull it over the top to bring it to the inside of the opposite section;

Sprinkle gold leaf flecks into a soft, messy do to achieve the vintage look with a decadent touch.

Then take a similar sized piece from the outside of the other section and pull it over to the inside of the first section and pull tight;

Just to note, fishtail braids look best with a slept-in look, so tease the braid by pulling out some strands for a more textured look.

Repeat this process until you reach the end and tie with an elastic band; and, Voilà! There you have it, an easy-peasy textured style that screams casual chic!

TIP: FOR A MORE INTRICATE BRAID USE SKINNIER STRANDS

TIME TO…

…dejunk your house

Had enough of all the clutter clogging up your cupboards, spare room, office and hallway? Well, roll up your sleeves and take a look at our quick guide to dejunk your house in a weekend.

PREPARE

Attack

Acknowledge you have been a secret squirrel. Don’t be ashamed, we all have an inner hoarder.

Tackle each room in order of priority, don’t do them all at once.

Make sure you have some cardboard boxes and bin bags at the ready, you don’t want to cause yourself more pain than necessary. That wouldn’t help anyone!

Organise your junk into piles to sell, giveaway, recycle or throw away. And, remember this golden rule… if you haven’t used it or worn it in a year, ditch it! You’re not going to!

Rope a friend in to helping you. Doing this on your own sucks but someone laughing at your gran’s gaudy china set can make all the difference, oh and get some beers in. You need to reward yourself for your hard work.

KEEP, TOSS OR DONATE Organise your storage with vacuum seal bags. Store seasonal clothes in a suitcase. You don’t need a balaclava for the beach now do you? Hold a car boot sale, it is amazing the junk people will buy. Start selling on eBay or via other websites like Amazon, Music Magpie, Cash In Your Gadgets. Donate what you don’t need to charity or give away items to Freecycle.

Eagerly Early

FIX UP LOOK SHARP AND TACKLE YOUR DAY WITH STYLE, A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE.

I don’t often win races but when I do, I walk it! I am just one of those people who can’t handle being late. I will get the early bus, train, or leave the house bang on time to make sure I am where I need to be – I just don’t get how you can be a little bit late. Surely just leave 5 minutes earlier rather than arrive 5 minutes late? If the unfortunate situation arises where I am, God forbid, running late, you can spot me dashing through the crowds like a mad lady. Almost to the point that I walk so quickly, I hear sound effect noises in my head! This does of course bring up some

that silly little dance to let each other by. But when side-by-side, who lets who past?

problems; accidental shoulder barging through the streets and arriving hot and bothered at my destination, to name a few. But I’ve always been this way and I don’t think I’ll change.

So, whilst briskly walking across campus to a lecture a few months back, I heard some rather fast paced footsteps behind me. Unfazed, I carried on walking but the footsteps behind me became quicker and louder. I turned around to see a girl, clearly late, as she had adopted a similar brisk walk to myself, approaching me. Our eyes met briefly and I turned back around, challenge accepted. It was game on and we were racing. It doesn’t help that I am also quite competitive, so when I realised this girl really

I should probably mention that I have just started University at Worcester and I am oh so keen to arrive at my lectures on time (typical first year student). Apart from the problems I have mentioned, there is also one, slightly awkward situation that I found myself in en route to a lecture. I had never thought about it before, but what if you come across somebody else in such a rush. If you meet head on, you do

was trying to over take me, there was no letting her past! She caught up with me for a few steps, which made things that little more awkward. I was now walking, almost running in time, with a total stranger. But, I lengthened my stride just a little and edged in front. She eventually pulled back to admit defeat. I was the clear winner, and it felt good. I also arrived at that lecture early, surprisingly. Sometimes you just need a little victory like this to get you through the day…!

Match made If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, then pearls are her classy big sister.

Most of us are used to thinking of diamonds and pearls as statement jewellery that we would never dream of mixing. Yet not only can these stones be mixed successfully, but together they become something far more lavish than they could ever be on their own. Pearls can mute the flashiness of diamonds, bringing them down to earth; meanwhile, diamonds can take away the “old fashioned” element from pearls, making it possible to wear them in an edgier, modern way.

While pearls reflect your glow, diamonds reflect the radiance of the lights you’ll be under. If you’re going out on a fancy dinner date in the evening, diamonds and pearls could be an explosive combination – whether you choose to wear an evening gown or a pair of dark-wash jeans and a gauzy silk shirt. The diamonds will reflect the romantic lighting while the pearls make your skin appear to radiate. A good rule to remember is to keep the two gems from competing; one should be the star while the other supports and enhances.

Occasion

Are you going to an old highschool friend’s wedding? Out with the girls? Dinner with your partner? Or just making the extra effort? Any of these would be an excellent chance to try out the mixture of pearls and diamonds. Consider the luxury of chocolate pearls and miniature diamonds as a bracelet, combined with a pair of tiny diamond studs. Any blend of pearls and diamonds in any of our pieces is set to wow.

Friday

After work I head to the Hand in Glove to catch up with friends, then off to Puccinis for a delicious plate of Penne al Puttenesca. A favourite because one of the girls is coeliac so needs gluten free and here we get a good choice.

Work normally eats into some of my Friday evening, because I am up to my eyes in deadlines. When I can eventually switch off my computer, I go for a couple of cheeky drinks at Bolero Bar and if the night progresses maybe a cocktail or five at Keystones.

I try hard to leave work on time, it isn’t always easy but it is worth it. My friends and I hold an informal dinner party every other Friday night, which is basically just an excuse to drink nice wine, eat good food and spend an entire evening gossiping. If I am hosting, I usually give the flat a quick spruce, open up a bottle of Malbec and start cooking my piece de resistance, Chicken Parmigiana.

Saturday I cook myself a full fry up (or as much as I have in the fridge) and then into town for some retail therapy. For lunch I usually stop at Mac&Jaq’s on Friar Street and grab a few takeaway goodies for later. More often than not I am enjoying a 2-for-1 cocktail with a few girlfriends in the Olive Branch wine bar later on too. Sunday I like to take a walk along the river to clear my head and refresh my soul, so I am ready to start another hard week of work. Sunday lunch is sometimes at The Marwood. The beef roast here is better than my mum’s, sorry mum!

Saturday I get up early and take the dog for a long walk along the Malvern Hills with my girlfriend. Then spend the afternoon chilling at home or doing a bit of DIY. Depending on what is on, Saturday night we sometimes head to the Cinema. Sunday To clear away the cobwebs, I pretty much spend the entire day mountain biking with the lads. We change our location to keep it fresh and challenging but I do like the Blue Trail at Wyre Forest near Bewdley – their route takes you along a disused railway line and through beautiful woodland.

Anne.Griffin

Saturday I have just bought a new bread maker, which is my favourite thing right now. Nothing can beat the smell of freshly cooked bread. I spend hours in the morning making all sorts of loafs and then the rest of the day eating it. Sunday Sunday’s are lazy days designed for those who love to do nothing better than lounge around in their PJ’s all day.

For those of you who have to work weekends, head to the Marwood on a Monday (12-3pm or 6-9.30pm) for its great steak offer: 2 steaks and a bottle of house wine for £30. No complaints about working your weekend now!

But, what exactly goes into making a good coffee? Is it the coffee bean; the temperature; the barista; the design; the café environment; the price; or a mix of it all? We’ve been picking the brains of Ilir Fazliu, one of the co-founders at Coffee Dough, the City’s latest independent coffee shops hitting the right coffee notes with its custom blend roast.

Where did the name Coffee Dough come from? Taking inspiration from Italy,

we wanted to connect the idea of enjoying a good quality coffee with a delicious handmade Panini.

DO NOT BEND IF THERE’S ONE THING WE WON’T BEND ON IT’S ...

...Work Life Balance a certain lifestyle bestowed on us by the media creates a burning need to earn more money; take on more responsibility for the promotion; have a bigger house or a better car; and buy the latest gadgets and designer clothes. But what does it mean if you have all this but no time to enjoy it?

It is so easy to get caught up in the daily grind of work that you actually, very easily, lose sight of your life. Business meetings run into conference calls; presentations run into imminent deadlines; and all the while you’re firefighting hundreds of emails on your iPhone! Before you know it, the week is over and you’ve only slept six hours, eaten three croissants, been to the gym once and drank 25 cups of coffee. Not what you exactly call living is it?

I am not advocating quitting your job and becoming a bum (where is the fun in that?), I am merely suggesting you notice when your life becomes too restricted by work and give yourself time to breathe. Getting the right balance will help your mental and physical well-being; help your relationships with friends, family members and loved ones who I am sure are felling ignored; and give you the chance to enrich your life with new experiences, hobbies and fun-filled memories.

But why are we (and by we I mean us British) like this? So many other countries and cultures have struck the right balance - they work hard and play hard and they rest hard too! I know I am generalising a little here, because there are always exceptions, but we seem to live to work, rather than work to live. Maybe it’s because we define ourselves by our jobs, or, maybe its because we are constantly comparing ourselves to others and striving for more. Is that ambition or just greed? We live in a culture that fuels our desire for more. The aspiration for

So, take the time to live and enjoy life and go find your ‘joie de vivre’, because I bet you’ve lost it!

THE TRENDS WORCESTER’S TREATS FOR THE SENSES

PACK&GO There are few better ways to see the world than on two wheels, so here’s our guide to the top three cycling destinations around the world. We’ve done the hard work searching where to go and what to take with you, now all you need to do is don your cycle kit and pedal! Not too difficult, eh? Where to go:

1. Italy - Tuscany This region of Italy is bicycling heaven. The cuisine, not forgetting the wine, can’t be beat anywhere in the world, and the lightly travelled roads offer every option a cyclist could want: rollers, speedy flats, famous climbs, tree-shaded lanes, farm paths, traditional training routes with bike-friendly populations, epicurean meanders and anything else you can imagine. You can’t go wrong, but you’ll go most right in Volterra and Siena, and on the incredible Isle of Elba.

2. USA - MOAB, Utah

3. Scotland - Aviemore

The iconic status of this small town in Utah can be explained in one word: slickrock. You can do things on slickrock that you just can’t do anywhere else. The traction is so great you can scale walls, bomb down chutes, and thread through sections too technical to even walk. The challenges are so great in both scale and in number, and the chance of riding them so real, you can experience quantum leaps in your skill levels on a single ride. Don’t forget though, the stakes are high and real. Getting lost on Porcupine Rim and dabbing on Negro Bill Canyon have resulted in fatalities.

This area in Scotland is very popular, with rushing rivers, native pine forests & a variety of mountain biking on offer. For the adventurous you can head to Loch Einich which provides quite a challenge and lasting memories of amazing views. For families the trails around the south of Loch Morlich will provide a good days cycling in beautiful countryside with the backdrop of the Cairngorms never far away. We all love to just grab our bikes out the garage and hit the road but what should you carry with you when your out for the long haul? What to take: • Helmet • Spare inner tubes • Patch kit • Bicycle pump • Sun screen • Water / hydration pack • Electrolyte drinks • Mobile phone • Jelly babies

A bulky wallet is more than just a pain in the arse! We are taught from an early age that wallets go in your back pocket. The only problem is that a wallet in your back pocket hurts your posture and can cause back, neck and shoulder pain. Standing up, the back pocket is a fine place to stow your wallet, But when you sit down you start an avalanche of body mechanic problems. When one cheek is higher than the other you end up twisting the pelvis, your spine becomes misaligned and your shoulders slump. Fret no more though! We have found the answer to all your wallet issues with the Bellroy Nude. Not only have the clever clogs at Bellroy slim-lined you credit card conundrums but have done so with style, refinement and minimalism. A pocket for the less used culprits, two slips for notes and a ‘pull-tab’ pocket for the daily debits. This really is a back saving, pelvis preserving, mindfully minimalist, beautiful piece of pocket porn! We have lived with the Nude at Worcstyles for a couple of months now and can confidently say we are converted and will be lifetime customers! OBJECTS OF DESIRE We like to swoon at a good watch now and again, even though fashion is being led by the beard, at Styles HQ a quick glance at the wrist of a fellow counterpart is nothing but the norm to ensure you are either in good company, or know what you’re up against. We take a look at some serious timepieces that we would own if money was no object, but until that day we can dream can’t we. I mean after all, isn’t dreaming a form of planning? So we’re just planning our future, right?

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch “Dark Side of the Moon”

TAG Heuer is somewhat of a benchmark in the luxury watch industry and this beauty is unquestionably, a watch that ranks amongst the Swiss watchmaker’s best. Aside from its devilishly sporty good looks, this limited edition timepiece based on the new 43mm Carrera 1887 Ceramic has instant impact. Its design honours TAG Heuer’s partnership with the Monaco Grand Prix. Every design detail shouts F1 racing, from its fine-brushed black titanium carbide that coats the titanium case to the black rubber strap that boasts a tyre tread design.

An historic icon brought into the realm of contemporary thinking. With a distinctively sleek and sporty look, this is Omega’s first all-black ceramic watch boasting a polished black case, bezel and black zirconium oxide ceramic dial all machined from a single block of black ceramic. The dial also has laser engraving detail and 18carat white gold indexes illuminated with super Lumi Nova pigments.

Baume & Mercier’s Clifton line is inspired by the brand’s understated men’s watches of the Fifties. Mid-century design paired with a modern case size of 43mm makes it a stylishly handsome chronograph. This Clifton model (10123) uses blued steel hands set against a silver dial with tonal silver numerals and batons. A black alligator skin strap makes it and an even more attractive proposition.

HOMEGROWN WE CELEBRATE THE HOMEGROWN SUCCESS FROM OUR FAIR TOWN.

IN EACH ISSUE WE WILL BE CELEBRATING A LOCAL SUCCESS STORY, A PERSON OR BUSINESS THAT SHINES THE TORCH FOR THE ESTABLISHED OR UP AND COMING TALENT WE HAVE IN OUR HOMETOWN! Perfect Defect was formed in the winter of 2013 as a contemporary unisex street fashion brand. The creator of the brand remains a mystery with the only information available to us that they are Worcester based. The mystery behind the brand has added to its appeal and has been a major contribution to its success. The success of the brand has also helped local photographer Adam Hoskins and the Perfect Defect Model Samuel Luca Davidson, who have both found themselves inundated with numerous job offers since working with the brand. Trade mark

pieces like their baseball jerseys and basketball vests proving popular with a string of celebs like Calum Best, Sam Callahan (from the X factor) and up and coming UK artist Young O. The future looks bright for this local brand and we have no doubt it will be a huge success much like another great Worcester born fashion line ‘FLY53’. Grant Gibbs of Prophecy, Cornmarket, has signed the label exclusively as the only stockist in Worcester, other than the labels online store, and has been a major help in it’s success to-date.

“ I work closely with PD to promote and stock the brand and it flies of the shelves! People ask if it is myself behind the label which is flattering, all I can say is its Worcester born and bred” You can shop for Perfect Defect in Prophecy or online www.perfect-defect.com and follow them on Instagram and twitter @perfectdfect

Now, what more could we want in a car? No longer a concept; this car is now a fullycharged reality. The initial turbo diesel concept car was unveiled back in 2009 and the production version finally revealed at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, ready for sale in 2015. The BMW i8 still looks unmistakeably like a sports car after a quick glance at its super sleek design - a flat silhouette, powerfully-formed surfaces and precise lines, as well as some spectacular dihedral doors, which swing upwards when opened!

This is the perfect city car for commuting short distances. Unlike most car manufacturers who are currently producing plug-in hybrids, Renault has created a superminisized electric only car that boasts zero carbon emissions, a quiet driving experience, a wellequipped interior, an on-board charger and an affordable price tag (around the same cost as a diesel Clio). How is the price so reasonable, I hear you ask? The secret is its battery rental model. Similar to a mobile phone contract

EATOUT So, with the lighter, longer evenings in full force, we’ve been checking out Worcester’s eating out hot spots and we don’t just mean out, we mean out out alfresco style! Holiday Vibes The Olive Branch Mediterranean Bistro and Wine Bar, Church Street

Us Brits love nothing more than to treat ourselves to a nice meal out. For starters, it saves us having to wash up (complete bonus) and it also allows us to spend more quality time enjoying the evening, instead of chopping and straining and mashing and stirring!

Don’t forget to check! Every food establishment will be rated by the Food Standards agency, make sure you check theirs out before checking in! Search the street you are in by typing it into: http://ratings.food.gov.uk/

If you want to pretend you are living in the Mediterranean, head to the outdoor courtyard at this stylish little gem and enjoy any five Tapas for £20 (weekdays before 7pm), or, share the Antipasti Board full of scrummy slices of Spanish and Italian meats and cheeses for £14.95. Now who could argue with that!

Eat, Play, Love Mode, Angel Row Grab a few friends together and make the most of your spring / summer evening in Mode’s courtyard garden. Spend your time unwinding from your hard day’s work, with a drink and handmade gourmet burger, in one of three cabana style huts. Then when you’re ready take a dip in the hot tub and let the good times roll.

Scenic Delights The Diglis House Hotel, Severn St For a more sophisticated affair make your way to The Conservatory Restaurant and head out to the terrace or gardens of Worcester’s only riverside dining experience for a delicious a la carte menu with a beautiful view. What’s even better you can bring your dog (wellbehaved of course) with you, so you don’t have to feel guilty and leave early, instead you can enjoy the night for as long as you want.

Shopping for Food Whilst we are a magazine that prides itself on highlighting all the wonderful independent cafés, shops, bars and restaurants in Worcester, it wouldn’t be right for us to not mention the budding new development taking place in CrownGate’s Chapel Walk. Next time you’re out shopping head to Bell Square and the area surrounding the Grade II listed Countess of Huntingdon Hall Theatre and you’ll find restaurant chains and independent cafés with lots of outdoor seating options available for the start of what it looking like a vibrant restaurant quarter for the City.

We would all like to think of ourselves as a little green fingered. However this isn’t always the case, many times the Styles bunch have tried to grow our own at home (vegetables that is) with no avail! Predominantly down to our lack of interest in digging, preparing, arranging and digging, I know, we said digging twice, we hate digging.

grow crops without digging. To prove his point, Charles took on a plot of heavy clay soil a few years back. It had been compacted by tractors over the years and water would lie on it in winter and in summer it become a hard block of solid clay. But by adding organic matter to the top, not walking on the soil and using his no-dig principles he got results!

So imagine our excitement when we hear of the new trend in growing your own, ‘The no-dig method’. This means the soil is left unturned, or not dug, and you make the beds accessible from side paths so you do not walk on the productive land. We can praise a man by the name of Charles Dowding for this time saving energy preserving method of gardening. Many gardeners find it difficult to believe that you can

We have often heard gardeners preach that you have to have good soil to start with in order to grow your own, but Charles’s work reinforces that you don’t! All hail Charles the no-nonsense creator of NO DIGGING! You can check out his work on youtube or by having a look at his insightful website.
