‫شهدت اجلامعة احتفاالت العيد الوطني األربعني‬ ‫ في مقر اجلامعة‬2011 ‫ نوفمبر‬29 ‫يوم الثالثاء‬ ‫ وقد‬.‫ حتت إشراف إدارة شؤون الطلبة‬،‫باجلرف‬ ‫ازدانت اجلامعة بأجمل املظاهر االحتفالية لهذه‬ ‫املناسبة التي تقام هذا العام حتت شعار «روح‬ ‫ وقد شهد االحتفال سمو الشيخ عمار‬.»‫االحتاد‬ ‫ والشيخ‬،‫ ولي عهد عجمان‬،‫بن حميد النعيمي‬ ‫ رئيس دائرة الثقافة‬،‫عبد العزيز بن حميد النعيمي‬ ‫ رئيس‬،‫ والشيخ راشد بن حميد النعيمي‬،‫اإلعالم‬ ‫ والشيخ ماجد بن‬،‫دائ��رة البلدية والتخطيط‬ ‫ وسالم بن‬،‫ رئيس الديوان األميري‬،‫سعيد النعيمي‬ ‫ مستشار صاحب السمو حاكم‬،‫أحمد النعيمي‬ ،‫ وثامر سعيد سليمان‬،‫عجمان للشؤون اخليرية‬ ،‫نائب رئيس اجلامعة للشؤون املالية واإلداري��ة‬ ،‫ وعمداء الكليات‬،‫ومديرو اإلدارات ورؤساء األقسام‬ ‫والهيئة التدريسية والطلبة وعدد من مدراء‬ .‫الدوائر احلكومية وكبار املسؤولني‬ ‫وبدأت مراسم االحتفال بوصول ولي عهد عجمان‬ ‫ حيث استقبل‬،‫ومرافقيه إلى مقر اجلامعة‬ ‫ ثم قام‬،‫باألهازيج والرقصات الفلكلورية اإلماراتية‬ ‫سموه بقص الشريط إيذانا ً بافتتاح الفعاليات‬ ‫التي يتضمنها برنامج االحتفال باليوم الوطني‬ ‫ وتفقد سموه خاللها‬.‫األربعني لدولة اإلم��ارات‬ ‫فعاليات الطالب واملعارض التي احتوت على‬ ‫املعرض التراثي الذي أقيم بهذه املناسبة وضم‬ ‫بعض مناذج األدوات التراثية والقوارب والسفن‬

Dean’s Message Dear Students

I would like to welcome all continuing and new students who have joint the IT College during this spring semester 2011-2012. I hope you will be able to achieve good results and improve your skills. Some of your friends have already graduated and are stepping in the work place, looking for their first entry-level job opportunity. In this issue of the IT Bulletin, you will find a summary of the main activities that occurred in our IT College during the last semester. In addition, I would like to congratulate the Computer Engineering and Information Systems departments for obtaining re-accreditation for their programs from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. This demonstrates the high level of credibility achieved by the IT College and the quality of the academic programs offered to our IT students. The new Information Systems curriculum has been designed from the latest ACM/IEEE IS 2010 standards and has been structured around two new concentrations: Project Management and Electronic Business Management which we believe are of high interests for both the UAE and GCC countries. The 40th anniversary of the UAE National Day Ajman University celebrated the 40th anniversary of the UAE National Day on Tuesday, 29 November. The celebration was attended by HH Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Information, Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Municipality and Planning Department, Sheikh Majid Bin Saeed Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Diwan Al Amiri and Salem bin Ahmed Al Nuaimi, Advisor to His Highness the Ruler of Ajman on charity affairs, and Thamer Saeed Suleiman, Vice President of the University for Finance and Administration, and managers of departments, deans and heads of departments, faculty staff, students, and a number of government departments, managers and senior officials.

The ceremony started with the celebration of the arrival of Ajman Crown Prince and his entourage to the campus. His Highness cut the ribbon marking the start of the celebrations that included a students’ Tradition Exhibition which displayed examples of traditional tools, boats, ships and old houses. Then His Highness toured a picture gallery that included a set of pictures of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his brothers their Highnesses Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates. Mr. Thamer Saeed Salman, Vice President for Financial and Administrative Affairs, commented that everyone, nationals and residents alike, are eager to celebrate the UAE National Day, and these celebrations are a genuine expression of their feelings. Dr. Mossab attended recently a Microsoft Training on Windows Mobile Phone Application Development. He says that Windows Phone 7 promises to be an amazing mobile phone operating system given its innovative user interface and functionality, as well as its great development platform upon which you can quickly and easily build games and applications.

With a myriad of new devices, a powerful and immersive software platform, and a new marketplace to attract developers and provide easy access to applications, consumer demand for Windows Phones will be high, and developers will quickly adopt the Windows Phone platform to capitalize on this growing mobile marketplace. This Training Course was a jumpstart into the new Windows Phone world by providing the participants with a step-by-step explanation of the tools to use and some key concepts for programming Windows Phones.

This training course was geared for beginners who want to get started with developing applications for the latest Windows Phone operating system. The training was designed in a way that even if you don’t know Silverlight or XNA Framework, you’ll find this Training Course useful. Dr. Mossab believes that Windows Mobile 7 will have a sharp future and will have a great market especially in the UAE. He encourages all IT students to learn this new innovating technology.

“Microsoft Game Programming on Windows Phones” By: Mr. Hassan Sahyoun Lecturer, College of Information Technology Microsoft has integrated a great library into its Visual Studio 2010 to enable users of creating powerful phone applications and games for Windows Phone series. Microsoft Visual Studio comes in separate modules. Therefore, you can install only the required modules that you need to meet your target. In order to develop games for Windows Phones, you have to download and install the following modules:

- Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Express – Phone library uses C-sharp programming language. - Windows Phone 7 SDK service pack 1 – Required for phone programming and testing. - Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone – This module is required to develop phone applications. - Microsoft XNA Game Studio 4.0 –

This module is required to develop phone games. After installing all above software, you can develop Windows Phone applications and games using “Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone” module. The studio also has a nice phone emulator that enables developers of testing their applications and games. In addition, you can connect your real phone to your computer and test your application directly on the phone.

Oracle Public Sector Industry Day in Abu Dhabi By: Dr. Mounir El Khatib Instructor, College of Information Technology

In Thursday, 27 October 2011, in Beach Rotana Hotel & Towers in Abu Dhabi, Oracle organized an Oracle Public Sector Industry Day under the title “Transform your organization with Oracle iGovernment”. IT department at AUST was invited to participate in the event through Dr. Mounir El Khatib, as a public sector expert. Dr. El Khatib was asked to have word in a presentation as well as to be part of the discussion panel as a non-vender specific reference. Overview: To reduce costs, increase responsiveness, tear down silos, and link front-and-backoffice operations. Oracle iGovernment offers the next generation of government service delivery with tools to move beyond eGovernment and develop flexible systems that integrate across functions and departments through a platform of servers, storage, virtualized operating environments, database, middleware, and applications built on open standards and a service-oriented architecture (SOA).

The schedule and the presentations were made to learn from the experts how IT vendors in general and Oracle iGovernment in specific can help in:  Modernizing the IT infrastructure  Increasing efficiency and transparency  Transforming government service delivery Some interesting topics and/or applications were: - Strategic Planning and Budgeting in Governments - Overview of Oracle in High

Youth Centers Delegation Visits IT College in Fujairah Campus By: Dr. Mohammed Ayman Al Ahmar Deputy Dean, College of Information Technology- Fujairah Campus The College of Information Technology in Fujairah Campus received a student delegation of the Youth Centers affiliated to the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah during their visit to Fujairah Campus. Students were received by the Deputy Dean, Dr. M. Ayman Al-Ahmar and faculty member Dr. Amer AlNassiri. After a tour of the campus, students had an IT training course in the laboratories of the College entitled: “Computer hardware and skills to buy a new computer” supervised by Lab Supervisor Mr. Mubarak Abdullah. At the end of the visit there was a distribution of souvenirs, booklets and brochures of the University and the College of Information Technology.

What is your full name?

Mirna Ahmed Nachouki

When did you joined AUST?

I joined the university in September 1998

What are your qualifications?

I have a Ph.D. in Computer Science

Are you a person who would prefer what heart wishes or would you give the priority to your brain?

I would say that I am a person who prefers to listen to what my brain says rather than what my heart feels.

Were you a nerdy student? And according to your opinion does a student have to be a nerd to score well?

No, I wasn’t a nerdy student, and no need to be nerdy to score well. In life, you need to be an open-minded person and to study in a clever way: a. In the classroom, concentrate on the material being explained and participate by asking relevant questions. b. At home, read attentively all materials given in lectures the same day, if possible. c. In general, focus more on problem solving issues rather than memorizing.

What is the one thing you would hate your students to do?

I really hate when students start chatting with each other, disturbing the whole class.

Some students like to listen to music during the lecture because they feel more concentrated and focused, what do you think about them?

Only careless students listen to music during lectures. These students cannot concentrate; therefore they cannot participate in class. Being a student, you must have found your professor’s certain words of advice funny and useless, but now standing at the same position, you think it is right?

gave earlier: “At home, read attentively all materials given in lectures the same day, if possible.” Back then, I thought it was funny and useless. Now based on my teaching experience, I am convinced that it is the best way to retain knowledge in your mind.

Did you ever flunk or bunk?

Alhamdulillah, I never flunked. I have completed my Ph.D. degree before my 27th birthday.

10. These days, technology has become the most important element in our lives and the computer is central in many industries, leading to lower manpower, do you think this intervention will move to education, replacing teachers with computers?

Computers can’t and will never replace instructors. Teaching doesn’t only mean to give an explanation by formulating phrases; it is much more

beyond that, it involves a real human interaction between instructors and students. 11. What do you think about Facebook?

It is a good way of communication with classmates and family if you are studying abroad. Nevertheless, it should not consume all the student’s time.

12. How many languages do you speak?

I speak three languages: Arabic, French and English.

13. Give me one word that describes you.

Straightforward 14. Please give a piece of advice for our readers.

My advice to you is not to wait for the last minute to study, revise in a clever way. And good luck and Best wishes!
