about

Mitchell Wall Architecture & Design provides architectural and interior design services for clients, including site planning and landscape design. They create custom homes, multifamily homes, commercial projects, and institutions. Clients include private individuals, custom builders, restaurateurs, office building managers, and educational facilities. The group’s sole mission is to create beautiful spaces—no matter the size—on time and on budget. Since its inception in 1976, Mitchell Wall Architecture & Design has been improving the cityscape of St. Louis. The group’s team of architects and designers sets out to manage each client’s experience by creating their vision and bringing their desires to reality. With designs that reflect the team’s understanding of space, light, proportion, and color, they stay with clients from conception through completion.
Do the architects of Mitchell Wall work together or independently on projects?
12
Mitchell Wall has a team of eight architects and interior designers whose design approach is based upon collaboration. Each architect and designer has his/her master of architecture degree and has several years of experience in the industry. The team works together during the design phase to create 3-D renderings of a project using Revit 2018, thereby giving clients the ability to experience their space before technical construction drawings are begun. How is Mitchell Wall unique from other architectural firms? The firm’s attention to detail, use of cutting-edge technology, collaborative design approach, and high design aesthetics are beyond the accepted norms in the industry. The team is able to create space—both exterior and interior. They collaborate to provide clients with thoughtful spaces. Working together in one design studio affords the architects and designers a high level of sharing, from inception to completion.

about
q+a
Mosby Building Arts has been the trusted resource for home remodeling, design, and architecture in metropolitan St. Louis for nearly 70 years. Clients benefit from:
What are the three most common mistakes homeowners make when remodeling?
• • • • •
Industry-leading customer service Certified designers A licensed architect Skilled craftsmanship A 10-year workmanship warranty
From national design awards to a pair of Better Business Bureau Torch Awards, be assured that family-owned and operated Mosby Building Arts is the right choice for your home.
• Asking for bids without specifications. Once we know your project’s scope of work,
we have a fixed price. • Unrealistic budgets. Materials and labor cost far more in real life than they do on home
improvement TV shows. • Overlooking permits. If a contractor doesn’t pull permits, or expects you to, find a
better contractor. What are the three most important lessons you’ve learned regarding remodeling? • Plan the work, and then work the plan. • Say what we’ll do, and do what we say. • Treat every home as if it’s your own, and treat every client as if they’re family.

Do you specialize in a particular style?
14
We believe that architecture should reflect the time in which it is built. With that being said, we also believe in the value of history as a record of how cities grow over time. So while our “style” is contemporary and modern, UIC is also one of the largest recipients of historic tax credits for renovation and adaptive reuse projects. What should a prospective client do before they meet with you for the first time? We encourage our clients to think about how they use or want to use spaces, as well as the particular qualities they are drawn to (light, sound, color). A big part of our process is client interaction and developing options based on specific functions and uses of spaces. What gets you excited? We get excited when a client tells us that we not only exceeded their expectations, but did what others had told them they could not do. We look forward with optimism at being part of our client’s success and how that supports the success of the communities we work in and St. Louis as a whole.

Dau Furniture has been serving the St. Louis community with high-quality home furnishings and superior service since 1894. Ferdinand Dau established the business with a foundation of craftsmanship and durability of products because those were the tenants of his trade—fine carpentry. Today, Dau Furniture continues to provide furniture from the finest manufacturers in the industry. Dau represents a wide variety of styles, from contemporary to traditional, all with a common thread of quality construction. Dau has become a hybrid of a furniture store and design showroom, offering the public direct access to many designer lines and custom options. A “Dau Designer” will help each customer in many different aspects of designing their room, including: furniture placement; color consultation; and selection of rugs, lighting, window treatments, and more. Dau’s 11,000-square-foot showroom has unlimited options to help bring your dream home to life.
Which products are your biggest sellers?
18
We sell a large amount of custom, build-your-own sofas. We offer many options that allow our customers to achieve the exact look and level of comfort they desire. What pieces have people stopped buying? China cabinets. People have less of a desire to display fine china. Instead, they are using buffets for storage and adding amazing mirrors or artwork. What trends are you seeing? Gold, brass, and bronze accents. Bronze accents are everywhere, from lamps to furniture hardware. There is no need to get rid of all of your stainless items; it is perfectly OK to mix finishes. Matchy-matchy is out. What is the one focal-point object you would suggest for a living room? An accent chair or a pair of accent chairs. Accent chairs with shape can add symmetry and visual interest to your room. Are there any new developments in fabric? We are seeing a huge introduction in Crypton® fabrics. These performance technology fabrics are durable and resistant to stains and odors. Once simple and lifeless, Crypton® fabrics are now much more attractive, with vibrant colors and beautiful patterns.

Lighting consultation, design, and delivery are always complimentary and are highlighted by a friendly staff.
What concerns consumers the most about switching over to LED lighting for their homes? Color temperature. Some homeowners still believe that LED lighting is only offered in high color temperatures that give off a very cool blue light. The great news is that LEDs have evolved into highly engineered sources of light that can not only render their true colors, but also warmer tones like those of incandescent lighting. We have a selection of LED products of various color temperatures and fixture types to accommodate lighting for your entire home. Is there a way to light a dining room without using recessed lights or chandeliers? If you have the ability to incorporate cove lighting into your ceiling, this would be an effective way to bring in ambient lighting for a more intimate setting. Additionally, having individual over-sized pendants to balance out a long table and create a unique focal point is always a plus. Which type of lighting have people stopped buying? That’s easy—any lighting involving polished brass! You will now find more refined shades of the infamous brass color in the form of soft golds, rose golds, and antique brass, just to name a few. You can always pair golds with other colors to create contrast, as finishes in the gold family can add a vibrant flair to your décor.

KDR has a program for retail DIY but also can help you connect with a qualified professional designer depending on your needs.
What trends are you seeing?
22
Wallcoverings have undoubtedly seen a resurgence of popularity in recent years, with brands like Innovations, Hartmann&Forbes, Arte, and Phillip Jeffries leading the way. Natural fibers—hemp, grasscloth, jute, and paper weaves—remain popular with both homeowners and designers, who love them for the warmth, color, and organic pattern they bring to a room. Surprising to many is the growing popularity of natural-looking papers crafted from vinyl as hard-wearing alternatives. Also worth noting, an emerging trend in the industry has been the development of digital printing, a process that we expect will continue to grow and evolve. If you’re considering wallcoverings for your next design project, the new Phillip Jeffries Boutique at KDR is a great place to start. Which products are your biggest sellers? On the rare occasion that homeowners have a moment to relax, now more than ever we’re noticing it’s the comfort and the natural movement of a favorite chair that they crave. And motion furniture—pieces that rock, recline, and swivel— from brands like Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman challenge former perceptions of these functional pieces. Acknowledging that recliners and incliners “have taken a bad rap over the years,” EF + LM has reimagined motion chairs in sleek, sophisticated styles equipped with improved controls and unparalleled comfort. Thoughtful details enhance their motion collection by way of Greek key and Lucite feet, classic brass casters, tufting, nail heads, and soft leathers.

Ken Miesner’s Flower Shoppe has been a destination for discerning shoppers for nearly half a century. Located in the village of Ladue, the shop provides a shopping experience like no other, with an inventory of items that is constantly changing. If you see an item you like, don’t leave without it, as it will be gone the next time you shop. Whether shopping for a gift item, flowers for a particular occasion, or an item to dress up that corner in your living room, you’re sure to find something that is perfect!
How can I give a room a new look without a complete redo? Any room can be refreshed with a few quick, simple changes. Ken Miesner’s Flower Shoppe is known for an eclectic selection of unusual décor pieces, including mirrors; lamps; assorted antiques; frames; containers; various furniture pieces such as leather trunks, side tables, and decorative chairs; and art. We also carry a broad selection of permanent botanicals that can be used seasonally to decorate. What are the essentials for a memorable party? Flowers, flowers, flowers. Guests always remember your flowers; a gathering without flowers is just a meeting. A fun way to bid your guests goodnight is with a small arrangement parting favor. They get to enjoy the flowers after the party and will think of you with each glance. How do I incorporate the seasons into my home? The first thing people see when they visit your home is your front door. A seasonal wreath is always a refreshing greeting. Once in, display a seasonal arrangement in the foyer that builds on aspects of your wreath. Continue the theme throughout the house with seasonal colors, floral items, and containers. Arrangements can be big and bold or small and lovely. Whether fresh or permanent, florals add a new dimension and feel to your space.

LuLu Belles products cover all your decorating needs, including draperies, window treatments, pillows, upholstery, slip covers, headboards, bedding, and table skirts. The experienced sales staff will assist you in finding the right pieces to perfectly complement your home.
How can I subtly add color with fabric, without going overboard?
24
When attempting to add subtle color to any room, use the 80/20 rule: 80 percent neutrals and 20 percent color. The color can be added through less permanent features such as pillows, throws, or draperies so that you are not married to a certain color or pattern. These items are easily changed if you tire of them or change your mind down the road. What are the guidelines for mixing patterns/textures in a space? It’s generally a good idea to have a mix of organic and geometric patterns and a variety of large- and small-scale patterns. In the end, if you stick to a specific color scheme within your patterns/textures, you’re more likely to be successful and have a unified finished space. How can I tell the durability of a fabric? Most fabrics are rated by “double rubs,” an industry-wide method of rating durability. Depending on your project, keep these guidelines in mind: Light use (>9,000 DR)—pillows, bedding, and draperies; Medium use (12,000–15,000 DR)—home upholstery; Heavy use (20,000+ DR)—high-traffic rooms. What trends are you seeing? Washable fabrics continue to enter the market each season. Ikat fabric is not going away any time soon. The vendors keep coming up with wonderful new designs and colorations that make ikat easy to incorporate into almost any room. Velvets are no longer your “grandmother’s fabric of choice.” The colors, patterns, and fabric composition continue to amaze us. Grasscloth wallpaper is never a wrong choice, and the options are endless—from silk to washable and everything in between.

The grey color palette remains a top seller that we often get requests for. We are seeing lots of texture, aged wood, and natural elements being mixed with clean lines. Arrangements with very earthy colors, preserved pods, and branches also are highly sought after. How is your inventory different than that of other home stores? People are often pleasantly surprised to find that The White Hare also carries clothing items and accessories such as scarves, outerwear, jewelry, and handbags. Plus, we have an extensive selection of holiday décor and gifts. Does The White Hare offer any additional services? In addition to custom options available for much of our merchandise, one of our most popular services is our in-home accessory service. With this option, our staff will meet with customers to assess their design needs and will handpick and place accessories in their homes for a professional finish.

about
q+a
Wilson Lighting is a family-owned company with a long history of success in the lighting and home furnishings industry. With more than 40 years of experience in Kansas City, Naples, and Bonita Springs, the Wilson Lighting team is thrilled to bring their unique sense of style to the St. Louis area. When you walk through the door of the Wilson Lighting Showroom in Clayton, you’ll be amazed by the vast selection of chandeliers, ceiling fans, and home furnishings on display. Homeowners, loft dwellers, and interior designers will find the right solution no matter what their style or budget. Best of all, when you fall in love with any of the masterpieces on display, you won’t have to wait. Most items are in stock and ready to shine.
What are your best-selling lighting and home décor products? Lighting has always been the centerpiece of our business, including dining room chandeliers, kitchen pendants, bathroom sconces, foyer lanterns, bedroom ceiling fans, and outdoor lighting. But over the years, our clientele has grown increasingly interested in our unique wall art, mirrors, occasional furniture, and accessories. That area of our business is booming. What are the hot trends in lighting and accessories? Personal style and a home’s architecture often dictate the appropriate lighting and décor style. However, in the past few years, many of our customers have been drawn to a more modern style. This is found in many types of designs, from industrial to rustic to farmhouse to glam. There is also a lot of use with mixed metals. What would you suggest as a focal point for a living room? As the brightest feature in the room, the perfect light fixture sets the mood and style of a space. It is what the eye is drawn to first, so make it a statement piece. Can you tell us about any new developments in lighting? If you’ve changed a light bulb lately, you already know how much technology has evolved in recent years! LED bulbs are here to stay because they are less expensive to operate, run cooler, and can last almost forever. Ask a member of our staff to explain light bulbs and show you our selection.

Known for her candor, humor, and approachable style, Davis specializes in residential design. She welcomes projects of all sizes and has an expertise and enthusiasm that will have you coming back for more. In addition to her design business, Davis has grown her retail shop into an amazing “go-to” place for an ever-changing display of home furnishings, accessories, and tabletop. MacKenzie-Childs, NEST Fragrances, La Cornue, and Juliska are just a few of the lines she mixes, along with a constant stream of one-ofa-kind antique pieces found while traveling to some of her favorite places in the world. B. Davis Design offers custom floral design and gift ideas for every occasion. Whether you are in need of a designer or a fabulous find, you can accomplish both with Barb Davis and B. Davis Design.
What do you like most about being a designer?
32
I have the amazing good fortune of being able to make people happy. Passion is my driving force; I’m in love with the entire process. Choosing materials for a kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom design is the ultimate excitement for me. It’s a privilege to be able to guide my clients in making the perfect selections for their decorating dreams. Is it challenging to have a retail store along with a design business? They go hand-in-hand, as my retail store is a reflection of my style and tastes as a designer. B. Davis Design is a great source of inspiration. All the essential design elements are here, including color, pattern, and, always, texture. Most people are visual, so seeing a beautiful tabletop decorated for the season, or my in-shop custom kitchen that includes a coveted La Cornue range, can inspire them to begin envisioning their own spaces. How would you describe the B. Davis Design brand? I definitely know who I am, what I like, and what does and does not work. There is a classic, collected, layered approach to my design and retail shop that has evolved into something very special. I’m a firm believer in quality over quantity and the concept that if you buy well the first time, you won’t have to buy it a second time.

Since 1995, Chesterfield business owner Nancy Barrett, ASID, has been creating “beautiful rooms” for delighted clients. In 2014, Kathy Cissell joined the company with a degree in interior design and more than 15 years of design experience. Awardwinning Beautiful Rooms maintains a business philosophy of providing excellent design service, on projects large and small, tailored to the client’s needs and wants. “We usually operate like a retail store that comes to you with design knowledge and experience,” Barrett says. “We carry a complete line of furniture, flooring, window treatments, lighting, wall coverings, and accessories. Or, we can just provide hourly design advice. There is no charge for the first meeting with Beautiful Rooms to determine how we might best work together.”
What are your favorite trends that you’re seeing now? This year, we are seeing more global influences with brighter colors. Whether you like ornate décor or clean lines, neutrals or lots of color, Beautiful Rooms can create a personalized plan that works for your lifestyle and decorating allowance. Do you have a favorite project you’ve done? Beautiful Rooms recently completed a whole-house project with a challenging deadline. The homeowner was open to design suggestions but wanted the update to be calm and relaxing. Upon completion, the client said the home is now “so serene and peaceful and, well, just right.” Do you have a go-to color palette? Each season in home furnishings, some color palettes are more readily available than others. However, color is very personal so we always ask the client about preferences before selections are made. Do you work by the hour or charge a flat fee? We usually find that working with clients on a retail basis is the most cost-effective method. Depending on the scope of the job, hourly rates and flat fees also are available.

With just one glance at his work, you can see that David Kent Richardson’s style runs far and wide, and that he has mastered a balance between his own personality and his clients’ tastes. When sourcing pieces for his interior work, he always starts with his own personal collection of eclectic items to create sophisticated spaces that are a reflection of you. And if you’d like to take a look around yourself at his pieces, David will gladly set up special appointments to show you around his shop any time of the week. Just remember when you walk in that some things are there just because you love them.
What is your most prized piece in your shop? As a retailer and collector, when I move about the objects I have accumulated for resale or for my personal trove, each object is my favorite while I talk about it and the reasons I am attracted to it. As I move about the space, my favorite changes. And sometimes I think, “That’s a piece of junk, but there is just something I love about it.” How do you get yourself inspired? My inspiration, more often than not, comes in the middle of the night, after a few conversations with the client. I do design math in my dreams, adding together what they want and like. I consider what is wrong with the space and how they need to use it, how their needs and the space can be adjusted. I’ll pop from a deep sleep and take notes, make sketches. I never call, though, which is hard sometimes. And, yes, there have been many nightmares. Explain your collaboration process. I love a good collaboration. I’m not much for baseball, but I love a good session of pitch and catch with design ideals. I really like clients’ input and love getting them excited. It’s their home; I’m a design democracy, not a dictator.

detailed designs, etc. specializes in kitchen, bath, and basement designs, as well as specifcying, supplying, and coordinating materials for all projects. The firm’s down-to-earth team consists of Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer Denise Deen, who has over 28 years of experience, and Assistant Designer Becka Harvey. They go directly to suppliers to get the best service and pricing for their clients, no matter what the budget may be. Their main goal is to create a personal relationship with clients in order to build a perfect, unique space that fits their needs, while making the experience exciting from beginning to end.
What questions do you ask before designing a kitchen or bath? At the first design session, which is complimentary, we start gathering quality information from the client by asking many detailed questions specifically about their space. The conversation is organic, and we listen intently to the client’s wants and needs for their upcoming project. Using all of the valuable details collected, we then begin to create a unique kitchen or bath to fit their budget. What trends are you seeing in kitchen design? Transitional and modern farmhouse kitchens are very popular. These styles include an open floor plan with clean lines and an uncluttered appearance. White painted cabinets with shaker-style doors, quartz countertops, and large single-bowl sinks are our No. 1 requests. Island seating oftentimes replaces the traditional kitchen table. What item(s) do you believe everyone should have in their kitchen? Everyone should take advantage of the many options for organization in the interiors of cabinets and pantry space. We help clients make a plan for each cabinet to fit their personal needs. Trash pullouts, rollout shelves, and cookie sheet dividers are easy additions that really make a difference. What trends are you seeing in bathroom design? Clients are removing tubs to make room for larger showers with multiple shower heads. Showers are now being completely tiled and outfitted with alcoves, towel hooks, and large benches. Tall vanities with double bowls, decorative legs, and a tile backsplash are always popular, and clients increasingly ask for heated floors.

Can you help to create kitchen remodeling budgets?
36
Absolutely! Kitchen remodels can be very expensive. It is imperative to create a working budget, and we guide clients through the process. How much does the concept of aging in place affect your designs? Aging in place is the subject of some of the first questions we ask our middle-aged clients. People are living longer and leading more active lives, so the home must be designed to accommodate the needs of someone staying in one place longer. Safety is a top concern as we assess the home to anticipate the changes that will be necessary in later years. The look must be fresh, creative, and comfortable. Do you follow the latest trends? We keep current on all the design trends. Our 41 years of experience allow us to make correct long-term decisions for the benefit of our clients without chasing someone’s guess of the latest and greatest trend.

Located in the Interior Design Center of St. Louis, JCR Design Group is an awardwinning interior design firm offering a highly personalized approach to residential design. With over 30 years of cumulative industry experience, the team, led by owner and principal designer Jennifer Rapp, enjoys working in close partnership with their clients to create cohesive interiors that are comfortable, functional, and, above all, a reflection of the families that live in them. The team’s design specialties include renovations and new construction, kitchen and bath design, custom interior furnishings, and project management.
If your clients could describe JCR Design Group’s aesthetic in three words, what do you believe they would say? Timeless. Layered. Livable. What inspires JCR Design Group? Our clients are our inspiration! When we first meet with a client, we take time to understand their short- and long-term design goals: Are they building their “forever” home? If so, what is their vision for it? Is the kitchen renovation for an avid chef? Are we remodeling a living room to highlight an important piece of art or a family heirloom? Are we creating a nursery to prepare for a new addition? As designers, we are continuously energized, honored, and inspired by our clients and the trust they place in us to design their homes. What would you say to a potential client who is hesitant to use an interior designer or has never used one before? With the abundance of online DIY avenues, many people feel pressure to be their own interior designer. However, doing it alone can be overwhelming and often an invitation for costly mistakes, as technology lacks the ability to determine scale, proportion, color, and flow. This is exactly where the benefits of an interior designer shine through. We use our knowledge and industry experience, coupled with the client’s design vision and goals, for a project that is seamless, flawless, and stress-free.

With a keen sense of organization and space planning, and an understanding of how you live, Laura Lee Home addresses function and storage so that your home is ready for action. The team also believes in the power of beauty. Details and little luxuries enhance how you enjoy your space, from plump pillows and comfy chairs to flowers and accessories. They ensure that the finished space is exactly that—fully completed and ready for family and friends at a moment’s notice.
Do you have a go-to color palette?
38
I naturally gravitate toward a light, neutral space punctuated by color. Fresh blues and happy greens are frequently found in my designs. The contrast of light and dark, as well as a mix of textures, makes a space interesting. What are your favorite trends that you’re seeing now? While I love going to the markets and keeping current on what is new and fabulous in design, trends are not a big part of my work. I believe in the power of timeless and classic style while infusing my projects with fresh, fashion-forward elements. Do you work by the hour or charge a flat fee? We utilize a flat-fee model for design work along with a furnishings budget that is determined at the beginning of a project. Our signature process for managing projects provides transparency to clients on selections and costs, from the day we sign a contract until the last detail is installed.

Marcia Moore Design is your destination for extraordinary home interiors. The firm’s designers believe that great design is a collaborative effort between your needs and tastes and their design expertise. Their projects run the gamut of new construction or remodeling, including kitchens, baths, and living spaces for single-family homes, lofts, or condos; upsizing or downsizing; and aging in place. Author of some of St. Louis’ most interestingly designed spaces, Marcia Moore believes that the best interiors express personality, yet offer comfort and calm. Known for her perfected sense of color; eye for the unique, practical approach; and an ability to marry her design instincts with her clients’ tastes, Marcia creates inviting, delightful, and livable spaces.
What are your favorite trends that you’re seeing now? Versatile design and the fusion of styles, materials, and decorative patterns are both hot right now. Versatile design, to me, is like multitasking your interior. For those downsizing or living in small spaces, this is a must. I have always loved the more eclectic look, so I’m thrilled that the fusion of styles is trending. I find that it makes for much more interesting, alive spaces. Which interior designers have influenced your look? Jamie Drake, Amy Lau, Kara Mann, and Kelly Wearstler are my favorites. Jamie’s rooms are perfectly done, whether contemporary or traditional. I very much get the feeling that I am seeing the individual client through his eyes. I love Amy’s use of color and pattern on the grand scale. Kara uses a juxtaposition of dark and light as the backdrop for each room, which creates this amazing grounded feeling. Kelly’s over-the-top opulence and use of so many beautiful objects creates a cocooning, jewel-box effect. Do you have a go-to color palette? No, each space and project is different. The perfect colors for one house may not work at all in another house. The entire range of elements that make up the space is taken into account when choosing a palette. Do you work by the hour or charge a flat fee? Our fee structure is based on hourly rates for work performed by the principal designer, associate designer, or assistant designer.

Working with Proctor Drapery, Blinds & Shutters is truly like having your own window consultant, interior designer, and installer all rolled into one. The level of involvement that Proctor has in each project ensures complete client satisfaction on both the quality and installation.
Which products are your biggest sellers?
40
Right now, the biggest sellers for window fashion are: tailored drapery on decorative steel poles over window shading in textured, natural woven wood; sleek screen shading; and light and airy sheer fabrics/linens in classic Roman fold or traditional roller-style shades. Of course, the combination of classic plantation shutters—which also provide outside curb appeal—and complementary, room-softening drapery side panels is definitely on many homeowners’ A-lists. What trends are you seeing? I’m seeing that clients favor window fashion with a minimalist clean look that stresses aesthetic beauty with vibrant colors and patterns, but also gives great attention to practical function for privacy, light control, and ease of operation. Top-down/bottom-up shading, cordless lifts, and high-tech motorization, along with vibrant drapery fabrics, are aesthetically and functionally a perfect marriage in window fashion design. What would you suggest be the focal point of a living room? The window fashion for today’s modern, open living area is definitely the focal point. Why? No other design improvement at an equal price can have as dramatic an effect on your home décor, both aesthetically and functionally, as custom-made haute couture window fashion done right.

Beck/Allen Cabinetry is an award-winning kitchen and bath design firm with showrooms in Chesterfield and at the Interior Design Center of St. Louis. Started by owners Mike Beck and Lee Allen over 20 years ago, the firm represents a small, carefully selected group of cabinet and hardware lines, each with a shared commitment to quality products and customer service. They’ve partnered with brands that ensure a range of price points and styles, from semi-custom to high-end European designs, including Koch Cabinets; Mid Continent Cabinetry; Shiloh Cabinetry (made in Missouri); Kitchen Craft Cabinetry; Crystal Cabinet Works; and Poggenpohl, a modern line of German cabinetry. Beck/Allen specializes in remodeling and renovations, large and small, as well as new construction projects.
Style aside, what other factors do you take into account when planning a kitchen design? Lifestyle, storage requirements, and traffic flow are key elements to a successful design. A kitchen renovation we’ve recently completed for restaurateur Bill Cardwell and his wife Nancy offers an excellent example. Their existing kitchen was designed poorly, with an island cutting it in half and an overbearing, unnecessary pantry that consumed one-third of the overall space. How did you marry the Cardwells’ objectives with regard to style and function? Nancy wanted a brighter, more open kitchen; and while she knew what she wanted, when the time came for tile and finishes, it was Mike Beck’s vision for the renovation and structural changes that were key to the transformation. He removed the pantry altogether, reallocated storage, and relocated the island. Moving walls, plumbing, and appliances can be complex. Do you have any advice for homeowners to help them manage their renovation successfully? Mike strongly encourages customers to enlist the help of additional professionals including general contractors and interior designers. Doing so can help avoid costly mistakes and streamline the process. Hear more from the Cardwells, see before photos, and find design resources on the Beck/Allen blog.

What trends are you seeing in kitchen and bath design? Clients are always looking for unique and personalized finishes. Whether for cabinets—in terms of custom colors, glazing, and distressing—or for hardware and fixtures, clients want their designs to reflect their personalities and lifestyles. What’s the first step you take when designing a space? We have an extensive design survey process for each project that allows us to learn how each homeowner uses their kitchen. We like to discover what clients like and don’t like about their current space, their daily routines in the kitchen, how often they entertain and for how many people, and their cooking styles. What item(s) do you believe everyone should have in their kitchen? Every homeowner needs double pullout trash systems for waste and recycling; under-cabinet lighting; and drawer inserts for knives, utensils, flatware, and spices. How does the aging in place concept fit into your designs? This is especially important in the bathroom, where we will integrate grab bars and benches into our designs before the actual age-based need for them arises. Anyone can be injured at any time and have a need for these things, so we install them preemptively.

Immerse is the only St. Louis kitchen and bath plumbing studio for design-centric clients and plumbing professionals, offering a creative sanctuary with best-in-class global offerings in an interactive, highly visual, serene setting. While the showroom is truly cutting-edge and driven by innovation, Immerse has deep roots in the business and has been a leader in the plumbing industry since 1937. While some showrooms are mandated by vendors who greatly affect the design process and the selection of products, Immerse’s concept was developed to be different. Immerse provides contractors, designers, and builders with a new way to see, touch, and feel alternative plumbing products—many of which are exclusive to Immerse within St. Louis. The studio utilized local resources to create a stylish, inspiring environment that gives customers a space to push their creativity to the limit. The lines showcased are fresh, yet tried and true. After all, plumbing is both form and function.
What item do you believe everyone should add to their kitchen?
46
Our newest “must-have” in the kitchen is a Galley sink (pictured top right). We hesitate to even call the Galley a sink because it is a super-functional, smart, and stylish workstation, where you can prepare, serve, entertain, and clean up—all in one place. It can be installed inside or in outdoor spaces, and it’s truly changing the way people design and use their kitchens. What trends are you seeing in bathroom design? We are seeing a lot of mixed (and new!) materials being used in hardware and lighting. Waterworks, for example, has an expanded line of hardware that brings an eclectic range of materials to these categories, placing extreme attention on detail, with a focus on quality. Materials include hand-stitched Italian leather, American walnut, patterned glass, perforated metals, brass, onyx, and marble. How do you design for an aging public? There are so many incredible products that conform to “Universal Design” (defined as creating spaces easy for all to use), yet one would never know, as they are stunning elements in and of themselves. One popular product is the barrier-free shower (curbless, walk-in) which has a very clean design and allows one to move in and out of the shower with ease. Single-lever faucets, stylish grab bars, shower seats, and wall-mounted sinks and toilets also are sleek and contemporary elements that make bathroom design accessible to all.

Creating customer-inspired spaces that are “nothing ordinary” is Karr Bick’s passion— spaces that people love and don’t want to leave. The Karr Bick team comes alongside customers to inspire, space plan, select materials, and install everything with this end in mind. They offer a simple, well-worn path from inspiration to installation that includes: a comprehensive space planner, online resources, an inspiring showroom and portfolio, an award-winning design team, material experts, stellar products, and craftsmen installers. Customers enjoy the comfort and ease of journeying with one team from start to happy ending. Although they have national fame, Karr Bick resolutely designs for people, not awards. Most clients end up friends. That’s just the Karr Bick way.
What trends are you seeing in design? Technology. Powerful design resource apps like Houzz and Pinterest are changing the way homeowners plan their spaces. The new Houzz app, for instance, lets you tap on items to source and buy; see what they will look like in your home by uploading a picture of your space; and write notes for instant, visual collaboration with your designer. What questions do you ask before designing a space? There are so many that we’ve actually compiled them into a planner so customers can have fun and enjoy thinking about how they want a space to both feel and function. One of our favorites is the “space personality” worksheet. It helps customers gather the most fitting words to define themselves and their new spaces. What items do you believe everyone should add to their kitchen? A client was enamored with a trendy massive spice drawer. We custom-built a beautiful 3-footlong drawer for her to house a bountiful collection, but as I pulled the drawer open afterward, salt, pepper, and garlic were all that rolled around. We both laughed, because she’s still the same person who cooks with the same spices. Your new space won’t change who you are, so we believe everyone should add their own personalities to their kitchens, not necessarily items that are currently trending.

What trends have you noticed in your recent projects?
48
In remodeling, we’re finding that clients are searching for simplicity in the function, size, and design of a room. In today’s market, we don’t see that people are after the biggest, most intricately designed space. It’s quite the contrary. The space tends to be smaller in scale and designed for the best use possible. What questions do you ask before designing a kitchen or bath? We always ask clients to tell us about a typical weekday in their family, as well as a typical weekend day, and describe how they function in the space. What’s happening and how does the room need to perform for everyone, including mom, dad, and the kids or grandkids? It’s also important to understand how old everyone in the home is, and how long they’re planning to stay. This helps us to plan and maximize their investment into the future. What item do you think everyone should add to their kitchen? The kitchen is typically the hub where family members charge and use their devices. As such, we always recommend a simple yet vital feature in the kitchen: the USB receptacle, or USB outlet combo. This allows homeowners the ability to supply power to anything with a USB port, without having an adaptor and taking up use of an outlet. It’s essential today, considering that each household in 2016 has, on average, 7.8 connected devices.

about

Russo Stone and Tile Design fabricates the highest-quality natural stone and most popular quartz materials with true, hands-on craftsmanship. By employing only professional and skilled craftsmen, the company is able to provide a detailed installation on every project. They believe that every kitchen and bath project should get an equal amount of attention, no matter the size. No homeowner should have to sacrifice quality in order to make their budget. Russo Stone and Tile Design can provide design assistance in selecting the right material for your project, aid in customization of edge details, and allow you to layout your templates on the slab before they begin cutting. Whether you are remodeling or building a new home, Russo Stone and Tile Design can help to provide beautiful and cost-effective solutions for your project.
What is the latest trend in surface materials? We are noticing a trend toward quartz (man-made) countertops for their durability, low maintenance, and consistent color and pattern. However, granite and marble still hold the top spot. Being natural materials, they allow for more one-of-a-kind looks that many homeowners are after. What is the typical process for fabrication and installation of countertops? Once the cabinet installation is complete, we can template for new tops. The slabs of choice are then ordered and put into production. In some cases, we can accommodate customers that want to be involved in the layout of the cuts. The first stop for the material is our slab saw. Next stop is our CNC for sink cutouts, edgework, and custom shaping. Lastly, our hand-fabrication will take care of the final touches and other custom details which are not achievable by machines. What should I consider when contemplating which material to use? We offer a wide range of materials, including granite, marble, travertine, quartz, and recycled glass products. When choosing one of these materials, one should consider scratch resistance, stain resistance, and daily maintenance. This will allow homeowners to find the material that fits the day-to-day life of their application, whether it is a kitchen, bath, or outdoor area. What are some current trends in backsplashes? Many customers are opting out of the traditional 4 backsplash. Instead, we use the countertop material and apply it up the walls for a seamless look. Another popular alternative is using stone, porcelain, or glass mosaic tile to accent the countertops. Either option will ultimately create a custom look.

What trends are you seeing in kitchen design?
50
Current design trends favor going back to the classics to achieve a more timeless feel by using cleaner lines with a pop of accent color. “Less is more” has become the trend used to create a look that is more transitional, with flat-door styles and shades of white. What questions do you ask before designing a kitchen or bath? In order for a kitchen or bathroom design to be successful, your designer must be able to uncover details about who uses the space, as well as how it is used. There will be design choices made that will be specific to you and your family. These are the touches that make your space unique. What items do you believe everyone should add to their kitchen? Inserts for kitchen cabinetry. Some of the most common inserts are pullout trays, trash/recycle bins, tray dividers, cutlery/knife blocks, and spice racks. Then, as a finishing touch to the cabinetry, crown molding should be added. What trends are you seeing in bathroom design? The bathroom can be an experience for the senses with the option of built-in audio systems, chromotherapy (using mood-enhancing colored lighting), aromatherapy (essential oils added to tubs and shower), steam units, or even tubside refrigeration. More people are looking for design similar to that of a spa.

Unique Stone Concepts specializes in bringing your vision to life, using a wide variety of granite, marble, quartz, and other stone surfaces in an impressive range of colors and patterns. The team at Unique works directly with fabricators, contractors, designers, and homeowners to make sure the stone that goes into your project is the finest quality available. Unique Stone Concepts has six showroom locations throughout the Midwest: in St. Louis, Kansas City (Kansas), Omaha, Indianapolis, Columbus, and Cincinnati. All locations stock basic and high-end natural stone slabs, as well as Unique’s lines of quartz products, Polarstone® and Ellipse. Unique’s professional design staff will help you to locate the surface of your dreams. If it exists in your imagination, it’s in their inventory.
Can you use marble in the kitchen? Yes! Marble gives the kitchen an open, friendly feel; it’s heat resistant; it’s easy to clean; and it will not harbor bacteria—all great benefits for those who love to cook. That being said, staining had been a concern to some in the past. That’s not a worry any longer, as we are proud to offer the MORE™ sealant, an all-natural sealant guaranteed to prevent stains for 20 years. What color trends are you seeing for kitchens? Greige (grey-beige) and white are still popular, and considering that the Sherwin Williams Color of the Year for 2017 is taupe, we see that continuing. A new trend is a lean towards green tones with lots of movement. Green looks fresh and goes well with just about everything: black, white, stainless steel, and most cabinets, too. We have many beautiful choices with the extensive selection in our showroom. Can I hand-select my actual slabs when I visit Unique? Yes, you can. A hand-selection is the opportunity for you to see the exact slabs that will go into your project. This viewing will be scheduled when you have decided on the right material for your project, have spoken with your fabricator regarding price, and know the number of slabs you need. What should I bring with me when I visit Unique? Bring a cabinet door, paint swatches, a piece of your flooring—any available samples that you have from the space you are selecting for. Our well-lit showroom lends itself to matching your items with the best possible surface.

How are your systems installed? Unlike most closet companies in the area, Beyond Storage offers floor and wall-based systems. It’s all about making vacant space into something usable for your family.

California Closets St. Louis proudly serves metropolitan St. Louis and many of the surrounding areas. They are dedicated to providing you with world-class service, fully customized closet design, and the most diverse offerings in the marketplace. Every one of the employees throughout the organization is passionate about the work they do. Their Design Consultants have a genuine passion for creating beautiful and functional spaces for your homes. California Closets invites you to visit their showrooms to see how they can create the perfect design for your unique space, lifestyle, and aesthetics.
What is the first thing a homeowner should do before you come to rebuild their closet/organize their home? A big part of getting organized is gathering the things that you know you need to store in one location and figuring out how you want to use them in that space. Then it will start to fit together like a puzzle. What is the latest trend in organizational materials? Every person has different needs and a different style. Many times we find ourselves thinking outside the box and using things differently than their originally intended use. For example, using a hosiery divider in a pantry to sort out small snack packs or using belt hooks for costume jewelry. What do you do beyond closets? Our wide variety of products spans bedrooms, children’s rooms, garages, home offices, pantries, wall beds, and more. California Closets storage solutions can enhance your home, and your life, by transforming unused areas and helping you maximize storage. Our storage solutions will help bring purpose to every space in your home. What should every house have in terms of storage/organization? Every home should have a place for everything, which can include: ample shelving; pullout laundry baskets; garment rods; belt, tie, and scarf racks; and custom drawers that can compartmentalize all of the little things that can overwhelm any space.

Earthworks Natural Stone currently quarries six locations throughout the Midwest and offers more than 12 varieties of beautiful, natural stone. From masonry and building veneers to cut stone and custom fabricated stone accents, landscaping boulders, pavers, and bricks, Earthworks has a little something for every project—big or small.
What are the advantages of using natural stone over synthetic products? Natural stone is energy-efficient. Stone’s exceptional “thermal mass” means it absorbs heat and slows down heat transfer, thus reducing heating and cooling costs. You’ll enjoy a quieter indoor atmosphere when choosing natural stone exteriors, which reduce street and other outdoor noises. Not to mention, natural stone is one of the most enduring building materials known, and its beauty is everlasting. How does Earthworks cater to clients interested in the booming outdoor living trend? Outdoor living is a huge trend that isn’t showing any signs of slowing anytime soon. Our products are perfect for creating outdoor features such as kitchens, pizza ovens, patios, lounge areas, and water or fire features. This trend is fantastic for entertaining and relaxing, and, due to homebuyer demand of outdoor living spaces, these beautiful additions can add tremendous value to your home. Can I build an outdoor kitchen myself, or do I need to hire a professional? Depending on the magnitude of the job, we have seen many homeowners take on DIY projects. Homeowners often tackle jobs such as landscaping, retaining walls, and fire pit installation. Full masonry-related jobs can sometimes be a bit more complex, and we would encourage a homeowner to do ample research or talk with a pro before getting started. Be sure to ask your Earthworks rep about installation advice and a materials list to help you get started.

about

Since 1953, Frisella Nursery’s passion has been plants—the unusual plants that are hard to find anywhere else in St. Louis. This is why today they still carry a large selection of hardto-find plant material. Their growing farm allows them to source a wider range of material that would otherwise be difficult to buy from suppliers. The vast selection of material is the root of their design philosophy, in which they strive to design and construct diverse landscapes that stress form, texture, color, scale, and the use of focal points that complement the landscape’s surroundings. Frisella Nursery’s team designs for four seasons and considers the use of space throughout the year. Their goal in every design is to transform outdoor spaces as an extension of the home so that clients may enjoy nature every day.
What trends are you seeing in outdoor design? We are still seeing continued growth with creating outdoor rooms for our residential projects, whether it is an outdoor kitchen or living room. Are their new products that you are excited about incorporating into your designs? A newer plant we have been working with is the “Blue Ice” Arizona cypress. It has striking blue-gray foliage that is flecked with white resin, giving the tree a rich silver-blue color all season long. It is an ornamental conifer eventually maturing to 30 feet in height, but it does not exceed 15 feet in width, which makes it an excellent focal point plant for landscapes. In terms of landscaping, what native plants do you use in every design you can? If space allows, one of our favorite Missouri natives is Nyssa sylvatica, better known as blackgum or black tupelo. This is a beautiful, stately shade tree that can mature to 50 feet tall by 30 feet wide and which provides an excellent source of food for bees during late spring. It tolerates our heat and will take many soil types. It also is one of the best natives for fall color. What should the novice gardener avoid? Mountain laurel and plants in the Rhododendron genus should be avoided. They can grow in the St. Louis area, but they are slow to establish and do not perform well with our hot, humid summers.

Green Guys is a truly organic entity, able to adapt to individual needs and desires on a case-by-case basis.
What trends are you seeing in outdoor design? We are seeing two different types of trends: design and sustainability. In many cases, the two are intertwined. From a pure design standpoint, the move to more elaborate outdoor rooms has happened as people are embracing the outdoors more. On the sustainability end, people are becoming more aware of stormwater issues, and a lot of progress has been made in the rain garden realm. Similarly, many people are starting to plant and cultivate edible gardens. Are their new products that you are excited about incorporating into your designs? Due to a renewed interest in outdoor cooking, the appliances and accessories in this segment have dramatically increased, allowing us designers a lot of flexibility in customizing a great outdoor space. What should the novice gardener avoid doing? One of the biggest mistakes novice gardeners make is searching for all their plant information on the internet or in books that aren’t catered to their specific zone. It is too easy to either rule out a great plant because of poor information or to include a plant that does not belong because someone on a blog swears by it. What is the one thing every landscape or outdoor space should have? We feel it is important for landscapes and outdoor spaces to be personalized and have meaning for those who use them. Don’t be afraid of adding something fun or whimsical—including items with personal meaning—into a space. Keep it fun!

Perpetua Iron builds custom decorative ironwork, with each piece built for a specific customer. Perpetua provides design, fabrication, and installation, and available work includes railings, gates, fire screens, trellises, mailboxes, and new forms. At Perpetua Iron, projects involve collaboration with customers to arrive at new solutions to suit their aesthetics and practical needs. The artisans at Perpetua see ironwork as a part of the architecture of a site, but also—in the case of railings on stairs, for instance—as important elements that help people stay safely in their own homes. Attention to craft and design is important to them, and they combine techniques from blacksmithing and modern fabrication.
How does a project develop? After clients contact us, we will set up an appointment to see the site, measure, and discuss needs and ideas. We often produce design drawings of options accompanied by cost estimates, which are sent in a formal bid. We’ll send contracts to initiate work and request a 50 percent deposit, with the remainder due upon completion. What is the range of services you provide? We make a variety of iron objects for our customers, including furniture and smaller items like brackets for shelving, plant pedestals, and much more. We also do all repairs—even chandeliers that have fallen from church ceilings! And for the final touch, we have an infinite number of finishes available, from patinas to paint, to enrich the iron within the setting. Do you make interior products, as well? Certainly! We have produced many interior railings, gates, fireplace screens, and tables. Work inside the home often allows us to design and build for a greater range of scale, from cabinet hardware to wine gates. All of our work is custom, so existing designs can be adapted for any context. What finishes are available? We offer both paint finishes and patinas. Exterior paint finishes are applied over primer. Patination includes a very broad range of effects, from stable and beautiful rust colors to verdigris. Finish samples are often made for each project.
