EDITOR’S REFLECTIONS

FALL/WINTER 2019

When my oldest daughter was born, I did all

the research, and then I did a little more. Like many parents, I read stacks of developmental books and scrolled through endless websites, cross-referencing ideas. As she got a little older, I went on school tours and interviewed countless caregivers. I knew the facts and figures backward and forward. I made educated decisions about our family’s needs, but it took precious time and energy. Then, around the time my second daughter reached school age, I found myself in a toy store, listening to two moms talk about schools for the next year. One family had found a “magical” place, and the honest earnestness in her voice as that mom spoke about the teacher and curriculum was enough for me. I skipped every other school tour I had lined up. (I’d already been the year before, anyway.) And you know what? It was magic. I cried when the school year was over. What I missed in my “new parent” research were the personal recommendations and wisdom from other families and that aha moment when you’ve found a great resource. And that’s exactly what this issue is about: saving you time and energy by cutting through the noise to find those people, places, and things that are magic. So, we proudly present our first Family Faves issue! The awards feature (p. 27) is chock-full of recommendations from fellow parents and readers about their favorite places to eat, shop, learn, travel, and play—50-plus reasons to love having kids in the city.

Our stylist, Christia DeShields (follow @moda_ christia for more daily fashion inspiration), has done the research for you! Learn about two creatives who turned their passions into businesses: a grad student who carves wooden toys for tots (p. 21) and a NICU nurse who creates fantasy photo backgrounds for kids (p 64). With the holidays fast approaching, plan ahead and mark your calendar for all the fun festivities, from Wicked at The Fox to caroling along historic Main Street in St. Charles. Tear out our top 10 list so you don’t miss a thing (p. 60). Consider it—and this issue—your guide to this season’s endless magical moments.

BIG WHEEL The St. Louis Wheel at Union Station is the city’s newest must-see attraction Riddle time! What’s taller than the Statue of Liberty, heavier than two adult blue whales, and open for you and your family 365 days a year? It’s the

St. Louis Wheel, a new 200-foot Ferris wheel towering over the new aquarium at Union Station. The attraction will start spinning in October, offering tourists and city dwellers a new view—20 miles in every direction—of the city. No matter the outside temperatures, the ADA-accessible gondolas are designed to remain a pleasant 72 degrees. The ride will last 15 minutes and rotate three to four times to the top vantage point. After, the whole family can explore Union Station from above with a three-story ropes course. There will also be a miniature golf course, a carousel, a mirror maze, and an oldfashioned soda shop, all part of the new Union Station. There will be combo ticket packs that include entry to the new aquarium, the wheel, and other nearby attractions. thestlouiswheel.com —LAURA MISEREZ Illustration courtesy of The St. Louis Wheel

“I love to watch the way Jonathan interacts with our boys.” —LAUREN, MOXEY'S WIFE

BREWING IS LIKE RAISING KIDS

Sometimes you nail it, and sometimes things go [in] a different direction. Regardless of how well it turns out— or if it’s just a really good learning experience—at the end of the day we make the best beer and we make the best kids possible.

LIFE LESSONS

Leave the baggage behind, and don’t bring it into other interactions. Approach life passionately! And keep a cool head. FREE TIME

PARENTING MOT TO

As a brewer I respect the saying, “Don’t serve dodgy beer.” Basically, work hard, do your best, and if something is wrong, work at it until you get it right. LIFE’S CURVEBALLS

We found out Jack had to wear a helmet for a year. [Jack was diagnosed at 11 weeks with craniosynostosis, a birth defect in which one or more of the joints between the bones of a baby's skull close prematurely, before the brain is fully formed.] We changed the narrative to ‘Cool helmet!’ Sometimes, less ruminating is the way to go.

We love live music, being outdoors, and spending quality time with extended family and friends. A DAY IN THE LIFE

Most days, I’m at the brewery by 7:15 a.m. Lauren is on the morning shift, and I pick the boys up about 5:30 p.m., start dinner, and then we decompress. FUN FACT

I have three fully functioning kidneys. BEST MOMENTS

Seeing the awe when [the kids] discover or experience something for the first time. Cuddles are pretty great, too!

TOP SHELF

The helmets are all on a shelf in the boys’ room. My favorite is the Jek Porkins helmet.

SUPER KID LEGACY JACKSON Some heroes really do wear capes. BY DENISE BERTACCHI

When an energetic kid puts her passion into action,

great things can happen—super things involving capes and charity and fun. Legacy Jackson, a fifth-grader at New City School, has a bright smile and boundless energy. As the chief superhero and leader of a group called Little Legacies, she gathers friends and plans monthly community service missions. They often meet to brainstorm over pancakes, and they sometimes wear capes. The group has gathered canned goods for Operation Food Search, dyed Easter eggs with kids at a homeless shelter, and made emoji-themed comfort kits for children with cancer.

16

Legacy’s mom, Kynedra Ogunnaike, a school counselor, supports her daughter’s big ideas (she even illustrated a book Legacy wrote to honor her late brother, who died of complications of type 1 diabetes) and went the extra mile to make Little Legacies a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2017. Legacy was awarded the Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest honor for Junior Girl Scouts, after making toys for animals at the Humane Society. Little Legacies’ next mission is for ShoeCrew Water Projects, which helps kids in Africa get clean drinking water. Might be time to trade in shoes for a cape.

Show your children there is hope even in the darkest night by joining the Light the Night Walk in Forest Park to fight cancer. Every registered walker will get a lantern: white for survivors, red for supporters, and gold to honor the memory of lost loved ones. Registration is free; walkers who raise more than $100 for the cause will also receive a T-shirt and wristband for free food. Registration and activities start at 5:30 p.m.; ceremony is at 7:15 p.m. Fireworks will follow the walk. Forest Park Cricket Field, Cricket Drive. lightthenight.org.

KUAL A LUMPUR, MAL AYSIA

REYKJAVIK, ICEL AND

Kuala Lumpur is a great family destination for multiple reasons: ease of getting around, lots of great attractions, parks and open spaces, level of interest for the kids… Don’t miss the Batu Caves, where there’s a Hindu temple within a limestone cave system.

In Mexico City, stop at the Chapultepec Castle, the only royal castle in the Americas and the home of an enormous public park that the family explored over the course of four days.

The family loved the waterfalls and black sand beach tours. “It’s the cheapest way to see these natural wonders,” says Amy, who also trekked to Everest base camp with the family last year.

When Liz Olson needed toys for the in-home preschool she runs in Tower Grove East, she noticed that

most children’s toys lacked diversity. Olson wanted a variety of races and ethnicities, which inspired her to start making her own peg people for children ages 0–5 years. “There is something really cute and simple about the peg dolls,” says Olson, who began selling doll sets last spring on Etsy. A young student at her preschool coined the name Little Neighbors, and it stuck. Olson purchases the wooden peg dolls and handpaints each one with nontoxic paints and finishes. She also makes custom family peg sets on request. She hopes to one day use the peg people in play therapy with children, after she completes a master’s degree in counseling. —ANNA BECK

FALL/WINTER 2019

A LESSON LEARNED An Alton author shares his favorite children’s books. BY JULIA CAIN

Ah, happiness. The more you want it, the harder it seems to find.

The same, oddly enough, can be said about cats. Dr. Andrew Dykeman explores the topic in a way children can understand in his new illustrated book, Happiness, in which a little girl is on the hunt for her feline of the same name. A Metro East native, Dykeman has had a wide variety of careers, from punk band drummer to chimney sweep. As you might imagine, the man is far from short on stories. These days, when he isn’t penning children’s books, Dykeman is a chiropractic physician in Alton. The new book is full of life lessons and quirky illustrations. Below, Dykeman shares his three recommendations for any child’s bookshelf.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR MONSTER

BEST WORD BOOK EVER BY RICHARD SCARRY

BY P.D. EASTMAN

BY NORMAN BRIDWELL

Random House Children’s Books, ages 3–7

Random House Books for Young Readers, ages 3–7

“It’s a visual feast of animals, words, and bugs,” says Dykeman of this vocabulary-focused picture book that introduces readers to the important places and people of their neighborhood. “And all of the animal characters were humanized in Scarry’s book. As an adult, I still have the utmost respect for animals and insects. In fact, my next children’s book has a cricket as a central character. Coincidence?”

“It’s about an owl who befriends a mischievous firefly,” Dykeman explains. “The artwork is an ominous dark blue, and the words are very organic and flowing.” Like many Dr. Seuss Beginner Books, Sam and the Firefly features helpful word repetition, great for early readers, as well as an important lesson: “Even though some of your friends can be a little mischievous and jerky, they are still your friends. Give them a chance to redeem themselves. Try to be forgiving.”

Scholastic Book Services, ages 4–8 “[It’s] from the creator of Clifford the Big Red Dog, Norman Bridwell,” says Dykeman. “I really wanted a pet monster, and this was a perfect handbook if I should get one.” This fun and spooky tale features tips for catching (and maintaining!) your own vampire or werewolf, making this a great pick during the upcoming Halloween season. “It is somewhat irreverent for a children’s book, with a lot of inside jokes for the adults. I still think it is very unique and stands up well among today’s children’s books.”

IN THE CARDS Who needs a rookie card when you can have a Ruth Bader Ginsburg card? St. Louis native Ellen Schaeffer first created a series of trading cards, for her daughter, to showcase the spectacular achievements of women throughout history. Much like traditional baseball cards, Persistent Sisters trading cards include illustrations of female icons, as well as bullet point “stats” highlighting the iconic women’s accomplishments. Cards are available on the topics of politics, STEM, law, literature, art, and historical trailblazers. They can be purchased in random assortments or themed groupings. persistentsisters .com.

FAMILY MEDICINE

Founded in 1989 by Harvard Medical School physicians, Best Doctors connects individuals facing difficult medical treatment decisions with the best doctors, selected by impartial peer review in over 450 medical specialty/subspecialty combinations, to review their diagnosis and treatment plans. Best Doctors’ team of researchers conducts a biennial poll using the methodology that mimics the informal peer-to-peer process doctors themselves use to identify the right specialists for their patients. Using a polling method and proprietary balloting software, they gather the insight and experience of tens of thousands of leading specialists all over the country, while confirming their credentials and specific areas of expertise. The result is the Best Doctors in America® List, which includes the nation’s most respected specialists and outstanding primary care physicians in the nation. These are the doctors that other doctors recognize as the best in their fields. They cannot pay a fee and are not paid to be listed and cannot nominate or vote for themselves. It is a list which is truly unbiased and respected by the medical profession and patients alike as the source of top quality medical information. Best Doctors is part of Teladoc Health, the global leader in virtual care delivering a powerful connected care platform—a single solution for addressing a complete spectrum of medical conditions. Through Teladoc Health’s global footprint of 50,000 medical experts, employers, health plans, and health systems have a comprehensive solution for patients to seek resolution across a wide spectrum of needs with convenient access in the U.S. and around the globe. As part of Teladoc Health, Best Doctors focuses on improving health outcomes for the most complex, critical and costly medical issues. More than a traditional second opinion, Best Doctors delivers a comprehensive evaluation of a patient’s medical condition—providing value to both patients and treating physicians. By utilizing Best Doctors, members have access to the brightest minds in medicine to ensure the right diagnosis and treatment plan. Through its global network of Best Doctors and other critical services, Teladoc Heatlh is expanding access to high quality healthcare, lowering costs and improving outcomes around the world. The company’s award winning, integrated clinical solutions are inclusive of telehealth, expert medical opinions, AI and analytics, and licensed platform services.

These lists are excerpted from The Best Doctors in America’s 2019-2020 database, which includes close to 40,000 U.S. doctors in more than 450 medical specialty/subspecialty combinations. PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE

A ZEN ESCAPE For patients, this garden provides a quiet break. ”Urban oasis” is a term often tossed around to describe any patch of green in the city, but in the case of the Olson Family Garden at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, it’s a respite from more than the concrete jungle. Once patients and families (as well as doctors and nurses) step out the door, they enter a verdant distraction from worry. Located on the eighth-floor rooftop, the garden is a thoughtfully planned 8,000 square feet of winding paths to walk, stepping stones to hop across, and benches to sit upon. Full-time resident horticulturalist Bob Paulson oversees the planting and care of 2,500 annuals, 1,500 bulbs, and numerous trees and shrubbery that create a lush landscape to fill the space. A fountain and small pond provide a soothing soundscape, and a giant granite ball sits waiting for children to roll it around its water-filled base. Small nooks and coves offer private corners for those looking for a quiet break from the day, while posted binoculars wait for curious visitors wanting a closer look at Forest Park across Kingshighway. The garden is typically a zen escape but also hosts a monthly concert series, as well as visits from the Saint Louis Zoo and World Bird Sanctuary. —AMBER PORTER

GETTING OUTSIDE In these spaces, patients and their families can play or relax. The first thing you’ll notice entering the second-floor rooftop play area at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital is the child-size statue of its mascot, Rally Squirrel, arms wide in welcome. The colorful playground is a convenient outlet for patients and visitors, and there’s no shortage of ways to spend pent-up energy in the 2,000-square-foot space. Wheeled toys dot the rubberized mat floor, and a small climbing wall provides a challenge for adventurous tykes. There’s a lowto-the-ground merry-go-round situated near a big-screen TV, so caregivers can catch a Cardinals or Blues game while answering the call of “spin me again!” For a more tranquil break, there is a fencedin green space off the first-floor wing. A NICU nurse donated funds to create the space, and visitors there can play on the green lawn or sit on a patio amidst colorful rocks painted by patients. An atrium on the main floor is another space to run free. Resembling a hands-on museum more than a hospital, the transportationthemed room features a submarine, train, bus, and paddleboat that double as seating and tables (and some even feature interactive games). Here, the hospital often hosts groups that have come in to entertain patients and visitors, like the Saint Louis Zoo, Muny Kids, and art and dance therapy troupes. —AMBER PORTER

DOUBLE TAKE The expansion at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital nearly doubled its capacity and includes a new concussion clinic. Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital in Maryland Heights serves as a place where kids can stay for an extended period of time after a serious illness or injury. It’s a hospital where both patients and parents can heal and prepare for their new life at home. In February, the hospital completed a $35 million expansion that added 26 more beds and a large common area with high ceilings and natural light along with an indoor playground, a putting green, a baseball diamond, and an outdoor nurses’ station. The unique outdoor nurses’ station allows kids to stay outside even when they need medical attention. With the generous donations the hospital has received, it’s also been able to upgrade the tools used for diagnosing and healing its patients. For example, the concussion clinic uses highspeed impulse goggles to catch visual differences in concussion patients that the naked eye cannot see. These tools may help patients receive the state-of-the-art care, but the support for families navigating a significant illness is what’s priceless. —SARAH NEWELL

history

Celebrating Halloween Montessori-Style

“Who was the first female physician in Italy?” “Who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize twice?” “In 1883, at age 13, what female entered an engineering school for boys?” These are the types of questions that Chesterfield Montessori elementary and adolescent students ask at a unique Halloween celebration called Riddle Day. Students research a person of historical or literary significance. Dressed in character, they ask their classmates and family riddles and questions to help them guess who they are. Afterward, they give a brief biography of the figure. It is one of the most anticipated events of the school year, and a special rite of passage in becoming an elementary student. (Can’t guess who this is? It’s Dr. Maria Montessori, of course!) 1400 LADUE ROAD, CHESTERFIELD, MO 63107 314-469-7150 // CHESTERFIELDMONTESSORI.ORG

FORSYTH SCHOOL

Culture of Challenge Forsyth School’s challenging and engaging curriculum fosters independence and prepares students to thrive in secondary school and beyond. Forsyth is a place where personal best counts—in the classroom, on the field, on the stage, and on the high-ropes course in the Adventure Center. A visible example of Forsyth’s “culture of challenge” is memory mapping. In grade 4, students map the United States from memory; the next year, they map Central and South Americas. By graduation, Forsyth students have mapped the entire world from memory. 6235 WYDOWN BOULEVARD, ST. LOUIS, MO 63105 314-726-4542 // FORSYTHSCHOOL.ORG

When it was time for 3-year-old Stella Stacy to undergo heart surgery, she traveled to the operating

room in style: inside a remote-controlled car. “It’s always a tough day knowing Stella has to go into the operating room,” says her mother, Kate Stacy. “But this program took all of her anxiety away.” The special remote-controlled cars were donated to St. Louis Children’s Hospital by the families of two young patients who passed away last spring. Over the past year, the program has expanded, with seven more cars now tootling around the hospital. “Riding in these cars helps ease discomfort or scariness going into a procedure,” says nurse Allison Faron. (For safety, the cars are remote controlled by the patient’s nurse.) “We can help these kiddos feel so much more comfortable and confident. They always have a smile on their faces and are blowing kisses, waving.” The experience also left a lasting impression on Stella, her mom says. “She has talked about it ever since.” ST. LOUIS

ASK THE DOCTOR

TEAM PLAYER Even though they might have to bite their tongue every once and a while, coaches and caregivers can (and should!) play a positive role during children’s sports. BY CHARLENE OLDHAM

When do you recommend introducing kids to organized sports?

How can adults be supportive without adding too much pressure?

It can begin at an early age. The goal is to try different sports and have fun. It’s about beginning to learn the sport, developing those motor skills, and falling in love with the sport. In the early years, the goal is to have fun, so the child will develop an interest in that sport. We’re not thinking about the Masters Tournament at 7.

From a coaching perspective, what kids want is feedback that is positive but realistic, and technically specific, so it helps them know what to change or fix. Then end with something positive again. It’s called the sandwich technique, and it gives them good, quality feedback that they can work with while maintaining their motivation and confidence.

DOWN BY THE BOARDWALK

Boardwalk Waffles, the pint-size waffle joint in Maplewood that serves generous scoops of ice cream sandwiched between Belgian waffles in whole, half, and quarter sizes, is expanding by leaps and bounds. Next year, Boardwalk will be moving to a larger space a block away, and two waffle trucks will hit the streets. Before year’s end, owner Eric Moore plans to open two locations in South County, at 4065 Union and 4348 Telegraph (and don’t be surprised if a West County location pops up as well). Moore’s eventual goal for his simple single-item concept is to have 15 locations across the St. Louis region and the same number in metro Atlanta—and then expand from there. —GEORGE MAHE

A WHOLE NEW WORLD Monica Siesener, a neonatal nurse practitioner by day and a photo editor by night, designs photos with fantasy backdrops for kids. BY SARAH NEWELL

After years of fertility treatments, a high-risk pregnancy, and a twin birth, Monica Siesener took a break from her part-time photography business to focus on family and her full-time job at a hospital. Looking for a way to be creative with her now 5-year-old twins, she began learning about fantasy composite images and found her niche. “I always consult them about the images that include them,” says Siesener, “and they aren’t afraid to give me their honest opinion.” Now, Siesener creates dreamlike keepsakes for other families, from underwater landscapes to striking animal compositions. “I love seeing the children’s reactions!”
