We Hold These Truths to be Self-Evident
This year marks the 243rd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. And while much has changed since the signers met in secret to dissolve the bands that tied them to England, their words are as true today as they have ever been. The preamble to the Declaration states: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government … The arrangement of this statement reveals the founders’ belief that individual rights pre-exist the establishment of a government-- a radical notion at the time. The Declaration begins, “We hold these truths to be self-evident…” By referring to the aspects of the subsequent statement as "selfevident truths," the founders insist that they do not merely apply to colonists but rather that they are universal. Included in these universal truths is the idea, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This bold assertion insists that no one life is more valuable than the next, and that—by virtue of sharing the same rights—no individual has the authority to rule over or oppress another.
Moreover, the equal rights shared by all humans are “unalienable.” They cannot be taken away. This is because they are granted not by any man or institution but rather they are “endowed” upon individuals by their Creator. Only the One who grants rights has the authority to take them away. Although the founders believed in the unalienable rights of every person, they also understood that there will always be forces in this world that seek to oppress. Thus, “to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it.” Put simply, government possesses no rights. Its sole purpose is to protect the rights of its citizenry from outside forces. If it fails in this duty, it is the responsibility of individuals to abolish it. The writers of the Declaration—and subsequently the writers of the Constitution—believed that government’s power comes out of its ability to protect the rights of its people. Individuals do not receive natural rights from government and thus government does not have the authority to take rights away. To the extent that it protects individual rights, government operates legitimately. However, when it fails to protect such rights or when it imposes upon them, it becomes an illegitimate ruler over what would otherwise be free people. When the founding fathers gathered in 1776, they did not merely declare the independence of the colonies from their British oppressors. They declared the independence of all individuals from the unlawful intrusion of overreaching government. And that declaration forever altered the course of human history.

4 Questions to Ask Before You DIY May 20, 2019
“When it gets to be more complex, it’s always good to have someone who is overseeing the project,” says Kelly Barrett, senior vice president of home services at Home Depot. That’s when it pays to hire a professional.
2. Do you have the skills? Sewing, carpentry, painting, metalwork: Each project requires a unique set of skills. Not having them isn’t a deal breaker, though. Half the fun of DIY is learning something new. Patel taught himself to weld so he could build his family a fire pit.
Sameer Patel loves to DIY. He’s built a weight rack for his home gym, rebuilt a swing for his son and welded a fire pit for his backyard. So, when it was time to add gutters to his home in Tucson, Arizona, he was ready to do it himself. “I had gone to Home Depot, read a lot of posts and was determined to do this myself,” Patel says. But the numbers didn’t add up. Patel estimated tool rentals and materials (overestimating for the inevitable mistake) would run $652, still under the $800 quoted to him by a local contractor. But when he factored in time — the project would take an entire weekend — and the likelihood he’d reuse his newfound gutter knowledge, he called in a professional. “Even though I’d save money with this project … I was never going to do this” again, Patel says. “I don’t plan on starting a gutter install business.” When weighing your own DIY project, run the numbers, then ask yourself these four questions before deciding whether to invest the elbow grease or pass it off to a professional.
1. How complex is the project? Installing a new kitchen backsplash is a relatively straightforward task. A good online tutorial will teach you the basic techniques and walk you through the supplies needed. A top-to-bottom remodel of your kitchen is another story. You’ll need to plan for and install flooring, cabinets, countertops and appliances, and may need to move gas and plumbing lines. That’s a lot of moving parts, especially for novices.
“It was fun sourcing the metal, developing a model, cutting and welding it,” Patel says. “The best part is the story about how it was made, knowing the mistakes and fixes and how we’d do it better next time.” Before tackling a new project, Patel assesses his skill set, figures out how easily he can learn any new skills, and factors in how often he’ll use his new knowledge. If it’s a skill he won’t reuse, he’s less likely to do the project himself.
3. What are the risks? How much damage could you do if your DIY project goes awry? Craft projects are less risky. Sure, you may burn your thumb with hot glue, but you won’t burn the house down. But some home improvement projects could flood your home or endanger your life if not done correctly. “Make sure you’re safe,” says Brittany Bailey, a licensed general contractor and DIY educator at Pretty Handy Girl. “If you’re taking out a load-bearing wall and don’t know what you’re doing, that’s risking your life, your family’s life.”
4. What’s your time worth? Put a dollar value on your time and factor that into the total project costs. R.J. Weiss, a certified financial planner, uses this formula: Total savings divided by hours needed to complete the project. “Now, I know my hourly rate for completing the project. Then the question really comes down to, am I willing to do the work for that amount of money,” Weiss says. “For projects I actually enjoy doing, such as yardwork, this point is moot. Is Your Home Older Than Its Years? Would you throw away $20,000? You are if you’re letting your home age faster than it should. Here’s a simple maintenance strategy to keep your home young.
You know how Dr. Oz says that if you keep your body fit and your mind nimble, you’re likely younger than your chronological years? The same principle applies to your house. An out-of-shape house is older than its years and could lose 10% of its appraised value, says Mack Strickland, an appraiser and real estate agent in Chester, Va. That’s a $15,000 to $20,000 adjustment for the average home. But good maintenance can even add value. A study out of the University of Connecticut and Syracuse University finds that regular maintenance increases the value of a home by about 1% each year. So, if you’ve been deferring maintenance, or just need a good strategy to stay on top of it, here's the simplest way to keep your home in good health. Focus on Your Home’s #1 Enemy If you focus on nothing else, focus on moisture -- your home’s No. 1 enemy.
Water can destroy the integrity of your foundation, roof, walls, and floors -- your home’s entire structure. So, a leaky gutter isn’t just annoying; it’s compromising your foundation.
Keeping moisture at bay will improve your home’s effective age -- or as Dr. Oz would say, “real age” -and protect its value. It’ll also help you prioritize what you need to do. Here’s how: Follow This Easy 4-Step Routine
1. When it rains, actively pay attention. Are your gutters overflowing? Is water flowing away from your house like it should? Is water coming inside? 2. Use daylight savings days or the spring and fall equinox to remind you to check and test waterrelated appliances like your washer, refrigerator, water heater, HVAC (condensation in your HVAC can cause leaks) or swamp cooler, and sump pump. It’s also a great time to do regular maintenance on them. Inspect any outdoor spigots and watering systems for leaks, too. 4. Repair any damage and address any issues and leaks ASAP. Don’t procrastinate when you spot minor leaks or drips inside your house. Ongoing small leaks can slowly erode pipes and fixtures, and even cause mold and mildew issues you won’t notice until it’s too late. Say you’ve got a bit of cracked caulk around the kitchen window. It may not seem like much, but behind that caulk, water could get into your sheathing, causing mold damage and rot. Before you know it, you’re looking at a $5,000 repair that could have been prevented by a $4 tube of caulk and a half hour of your time. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,613 square miles (6,770 km 2), of which 2,553 square miles (6,610 km 2) is land and 60 square miles (160 km 2) (2.3%) is water. Plumas County is located in the far northern end of the Sierra Nevada Range. The area's rugged terrain marks the transition point between the northern Sierra Nevadas and the southern end of the Cascade Range. Lassen Peak, which is the southernmost volcanic peak in the Cascade Range, is found just north of Plumas County's border, and part of Lassen Volcanic National Park extends into the northwest corner of the county. Plumas National Forest's 1,200,000 acres (4,900 km 2) offer a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, camping, kayaking, swimming, mountain biking, hunting and fishing. The area features more than 100 natural and artificial lakes. Many of the natural lakes are glacial in origin and can be found in and around Lakes Basin Recreation Area. The artificial lakes include Lake Almanor, Lake Davis, Frenchman Lake, Little Grass Valley Reservoir, Antelope Lake, and Buck's Lake. Plumas County also features more than 1,000 miles of rivers and streams. All three forks of the Feather River run through the area.

Sierra County
Sierra County is located in northern California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,240 making it California's second-least populous county. The county seat is Downieville, and the only incorporated city is Loyalton. The county is in the Sierra Nevada, northeast of Sacramento on the border with Nevada. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 962 square miles (2,490 km 2), of which 953 square miles (2,470 km 2) is land and 9.0 square miles (23 km 2) (0.9%) is water. RICH IN HISTORY: Prior to the California Gold Rush, the area was home to both the Maidu and the Washoe peoples. They generally summered in the higher elevations to hunt and fish, and returned to lower elevations for the winter months. After the discovery of gold in the Sierra foothills sparked the California Gold Rush, more than 16,000 miners settled in Sierra County between 1848-1860. Most mining settlements in the county sprung up along the North and Middle Forks of the Yuba River, both of which had rich deposits of gold. While some of the mining boom towns faded away once gold fever died down, other settlements such as Downieville and Sierra City have remained. Notable gold nuggets found in the county include a 26.5 pound specimen, avoirdupois, found by a group of sailors at Sailor Ravine, two miles above Downieville. A 51-pound specimen was found in 1853 by a group of Frenchmen in French Ravine. The 106 pound Monumental Nugget was found in Sept. 1869 at Sierra City. The Bald Mountain drift mine in Forest City was founded in Aug. 1864, and was the largest of its kind in the state at the time. The Bald Mountain Extension was located in 1874 east of Forest. The Monte Cristo Mine was located in 1854. The largest quartz-mine is the Sierra Buttes Gold Mine was located in 1850 near Sierra City. The Gold Bluff Mine was located near Downieville in 1854. Here's a partial list of lakes in Plumas County, Northern California. These are the most well-known and popular lakes for camping, fishing and hiking. Lake Almanor, at 4,500 feet elevation and with 52 miles of forested shoreline, is the county's largest lake, offering year-round fishing and spectacular views of majestic Lassen Peak.
Butt Valley Reservoir, near Lake Almanor, is widely known for camping and as a great fishery for trout. Round Valley Reservoir, located three miles above Greenville, is a warm water fishery containing bass and bluegill, and is a popular place to bring children because they're sure to make a catch. Antelope Lake, located 30 miles NE of the small town of Taylorsville in the Genesee Valley, is a popular camping and fishing spot. It sits at 5,000 feet in elevation and has 15 miles of shoreline.
Little Grass Valley Reservoir, 3 miles south of the community of La Porte, sits at just over 5,000 feet in elevation. It is hugely popular with campers and fishing enthusiasts in the summer, and snowmobile enthusiasts in the winter. Lake Davis, seven miles north of the City of Portola, sits at 5,800 feet in elevation and offers year-round activities. Camping, fishing (including an annual fishing derby) and hiking during the summer months, and a popular ice fishing tournament, sled-dog races and snowmobile poker runs in the winter. Nearby J&J’s Grizzly Store has just about anything you might need. Frenchman Lake is in the eastern end of the beautiful Sierra Valley. A high desert lake at 5,800 feet, it's nestled in the pines. Just out of Chilcoot, Frenchman is home to camping and fishing.
Bucks Lake, 17 miles southwest of Quincy, and at 5,200 feet in elevation, boasts 17 miles of shoreline, sandy beaches and tall pines. Bucks Lake attracts fishermen, campers, hikers and water sports enthusiasts in summer. Winter bring snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Gold Lake, in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area, offers hiking, camping and fishing in the summer and draws snow sports enthusiasts in the winter. 6,400 feet in elevation.

Gold Discovery Days invites visitors to step into the lives of gold miners circa 1851 when the discovery of gold on Eureka Peak and the bonanza that followed in Johnsville through the 1890's left their marks. Demonstrations and activities includes tours of the Miner's cabin the Moriarty House, blacksmith shop, the bushman mill, the assay office and activities. Candle making, spinning, weaving, woodworking, gold panning, quill pen writing, children's games, ice cream making, clothes washing the 19th century way, butter making, homemade bread and jam, and wagon rides through the town of Johnsville can be experienced by all. Family and group pictures taken in costumes from the era are available for a small charge of $10. Guided hikes to historical sites in the Park, wandering musicians, food for sale and a barbecue each day from 11 am - 3 pm featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, and authentic Cornish pasties together with beverages and all the trimmings are worth the wait (save your appetite.) The annual Rotary Pancake Breakfast takes place on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. approx. Come enjoy music by Code Bluegrass while eating breakfast and take part in the fundraising raffle! The Johnsville Historical Society's St. John's Church Museum is also open, documenting Johnsville's historic families as well as old maps and photographs of the area in its heyday. Church activities begin daily with their traditional junk sale and Saturday morning also features an old-fashioned bake sale. The historic society also hosts an architectural walking tour of Johnsville departing from the Park's museum.

Romano’s Farmers Market hosts local vendors who are hand-selected for their quality and product. The market opens every Friday from 10 am-2:00 pm. and continues for 15 weeks until September 13th . Romano’s Certified Farmers Market was voted by vendors as their “favorite” farmers market that they attend, and is considered “the most fun market” of all the farmers market rated by attendees.
