We Hold These Truths to be Self-Evident

This year marks the 243rd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. And while much has changed since the signers met in secret to dissolve the bands that tied them to England, their words are as true today as they have ever been. The preamble to the Declaration states: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government … The arrangement of this statement reveals the founders’ belief that individual rights pre-exist the establishment of a government-- a radical notion at the time. The Declaration begins, “We hold these truths to be self-evident…” By referring to the aspects of the subsequent statement as "selfevident truths," the founders insist that they do not merely apply to colonists but rather that they are universal. Included in these universal truths is the idea, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This bold assertion insists that no one life is more valuable than the next, and that—by virtue of sharing the same rights—no individual has the authority to rule over or oppress another.

Moreover, the equal rights shared by all humans are “unalienable.” They cannot be taken away. This is because they are granted not by any man or institution but rather they are “endowed” upon individuals by their Creator. Only the One who grants rights has the authority to take them away. Although the founders believed in the unalienable rights of every person, they also understood that there will always be forces in this world that seek to oppress. Thus, “to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it.” Put simply, government possesses no rights. Its sole purpose is to protect the rights of its citizenry from outside forces. If it fails in this duty, it is the responsibility of individuals to abolish it. The writers of the Declaration—and subsequently the writers of the Constitution—believed that government’s power comes out of its ability to protect the rights of its people. Individuals do not receive natural rights from government and thus government does not have the authority to take rights away. To the extent that it protects individual rights, government operates legitimately. However, when it fails to protect such rights or when it imposes upon them, it becomes an illegitimate ruler over what would otherwise be free people. When the founding fathers gathered in 1776, they did not merely declare the independence of the colonies from their British oppressors. They declared the independence of all individuals from the unlawful intrusion of overreaching government. And that declaration forever altered the course of human history.

4 Questions to Ask Before You DIY May 20, 2019

“When it gets to be more complex, it’s always good to have someone who is overseeing the project,” says Kelly Barrett, senior vice president of home services at Home Depot. That’s when it pays to hire a professional.

2. Do you have the skills? Sewing, carpentry, painting, metalwork: Each project requires a unique set of skills. Not having them isn’t a deal breaker, though. Half the fun of DIY is learning something new. Patel taught himself to weld so he could build his family a fire pit.

Sameer Patel loves to DIY. He’s built a weight rack for his home gym, rebuilt a swing for his son and welded a fire pit for his backyard. So, when it was time to add gutters to his home in Tucson, Arizona, he was ready to do it himself. “I had gone to Home Depot, read a lot of posts and was determined to do this myself,” Patel says. But the numbers didn’t add up. Patel estimated tool rentals and materials (overestimating for the inevitable mistake) would run $652, still under the $800 quoted to him by a local contractor. But when he factored in time — the project would take an entire weekend — and the likelihood he’d reuse his newfound gutter knowledge, he called in a professional. “Even though I’d save money with this project … I was never going to do this” again, Patel says. “I don’t plan on starting a gutter install business.” When weighing your own DIY project, run the numbers, then ask yourself these four questions before deciding whether to invest the elbow grease or pass it off to a professional.

1. How complex is the project? Installing a new kitchen backsplash is a relatively straightforward task. A good online tutorial will teach you the basic techniques and walk you through the supplies needed. A top-to-bottom remodel of your kitchen is another story. You’ll need to plan for and install flooring, cabinets, countertops and appliances, and may need to move gas and plumbing lines. That’s a lot of moving parts, especially for novices.

“It was fun sourcing the metal, developing a model, cutting and welding it,” Patel says. “The best part is the story about how it was made, knowing the mistakes and fixes and how we’d do it better next time.” Before tackling a new project, Patel assesses his skill set, figures out how easily he can learn any new skills, and factors in how often he’ll use his new knowledge. 3. What are the risks? How much damage could you do if your DIY project goes awry? Craft projects are less risky. Sure, you may burn your thumb with hot glue, but you won’t burn the house down. THE ULTIMATE SUMMER MAINTENANCE CHECK LIST

Once the ground has thawed and the trees begin to bud, it's time to prepare your home for the summer season. On top of your regular cleaning, you'll also want to consider these general home maintenance tips. Use this checklist as an aid to make sure everything in your home from the basement to the roof is in tip-top shape. OUTSIDE: Inspect roofing for missing, loose, or damaged shingles and leaks. Inspect chimney and fireplace venting for damage. Remove leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts. Remove insulation from outdoor faucets. Replace washers as needed. Be a leak detective. Check your hoses and exterior faucets for leaks -- even a tiny drip can add up to a big waste of water. Pinhole leaks in hoses can be covered up by winding regular electrical tape around the (dry) hose in overlapping layers. Check sprinkler heads and irrigation systems and set timers. Prune trees and shrubs. Add a layer of mulch to keep weeds down and help the ground retain its moisture in the heat. It'll give your plants a chance to grow Analyze your deck. Look over your deck for signs of rotting and hammer in any nails that are poking up. Then, determine if your deck needs sealing. Sprinkle water on the deck's boards. If the water beads up, you're in good shape; but if it soaks right in, it's time to reseal. Power-wash windows and siding. Clean, repair the deck and patio furniture. Clean your outdoor cooker. Give your grill a deep cleaning with these simple steps: For gas grills, turn the heat up to high and let the grill cook with the lid closed for about half an hour. Allow the grill to cool and then brush it off with a grill brush. Wipe down the exterior with a damp sponge and a gentle cleanser. Clean the grill's drip pans. For charcoal grills, completely empty the grill and wipe out any ashy residue. Then clean it inside and out with hot water, a scrubby sponge and some liquid dishwashing soap. Let the grill dry completely before using it again. INSIDE: Check detectors. Check your home's smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they're working properly. Replace the batteries. Change the air-conditioner filter. If you have central air-conditioning, consider a professional servicing. Clean ceiling fans and other fans with a damp rag. If you have high ceilings, a ceiling-fan duster can help you de-grime hard-to-reach blades. Clean window and door screens. Repair or replace caulking and weather stripping around windows, doors, and mechanicals. Polish wood furniture, and dust light fixtures. Inspect sink, shower, and bath caulking for deterioration. Seal tile grout. Clean kitchen exhaust fan filter. Clean kitchen exhaust fan filter. Clean refrigerator and freezer coils and empty and clean drip trays. Check dishwasher for leaks. Check around kitchen and bathroom cabinets and around toilets for leaks. Replace interior and showerhead washers if needed. Vacuum lint from dryer vent. Drain or flush water heater. Oil garage-door opener and chain, garage door, and all door hinges. Stop dirt at the door. Keep summer's mud and muck outside with not one, but two doormats at your main entry door. Place a coarse mat at the exterior and a softer, cloth one on the interior to catch the most dirt. Better still, instruct family members to remove their shoes upon entering.

The Dos and Don'ts of Cleaning Patio Furniture

is great on white plastic furniture (just make sure to wear gloves, as this cleanser often contains bleach).

Start and end each season by giving your furniture a good deep clean, and be sure to wipe everything down after pool parties and barbecues. You may opt to use a protectant on your furniture depending on the material. Wood, for example, might do well with a coat of outdoor varnish. Metal can be lightly coated with auto wax to keep it in good shape.

DON’T use abrasives on wicker and plastic.

Keep your durable outdoor dining chairs and tables looking top-notch.

While a soft-bristled brush is safe for scrubbing wood and metal surfaces, plastic and wicker call for something gentler. When cleaning wicker, use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the piece down; for plastic, use a sponge. DO give your cleaning solution time to work.

Though materials can range from durable exotic hardwoods to delicate wickers, all patio furniture requires routine cleaning. Using the wrong products or techniques, however, could damage your outdoor tables, chairs, and lounges. Follow these guidelines to get the job done quickly and correctly. DON’T use a pressure washer.

Apply the appropriate cleaning product to the furniture and give it about 15 minutes of dwell time. Then rinse thoroughly with a garden hose—unless it’s wicker, which can warp if saturated with too much water. Wipe wicker furniture down with a damp cloth instead to remove soap.

Save this powerful cleaning tool for your deck. Power washing can do more harm than good to patio furniture. In most cases, a garden hose and a little elbow grease is all you need.

DON’T forget the umbrella.

For light amounts of rust, use sandpaper or steel wool to gently scrub it off. For more significant rust, use an electric drill outfitted with a wire brush, or even a grinder if you have one handy. DO use cleaning agents tailored to your furniture’s material. Wood, wicker, metal, and plastic each demand special cleaning. Natural materials like wood and wicker call for a nourishing, oil-based soap. Colored plastic and metal furniture can be cleaning with a mild dishwashing soap. Automatic dishwashing detergent

Remove the fabric from the frame of your patio umbrella, if possible, and if machine washable, follow the care tag instructions to launder. If you can’t take the fabric off, remove surface dirt with a vacuum or soft-bristled brush, then mix a solution of warm water and mild laundry detergent (about a quarter of a cup per gallon of water) and give the fabric a good scrub with a brush. Let it soak in for about 20 minutes, then rinse with a garden hose and let dry in the sun.

Is Your Home Older Than Its Years? Would you throw away $20,000? You are if you’re letting your home age faster than it should. Here’s a simple maintenance strategy to keep your home young.

You know how Dr. Oz says that if you keep your body fit and your mind nimble, you’re likely younger than your chronological years? The same principle applies to your house. An out-of-shape house is older than its years and could lose 10% of its appraised value, says Mack Strickland, an appraiser and real estate agent in Chester, Va. That’s a $15,000 to $20,000 adjustment for the average home. But good maintenance can even add value. A study out of the University of Connecticut and Syracuse University finds that regular maintenance increases the value of a home by about 1% each year. So, if you’ve been deferring maintenance, or just need a good strategy to stay on top of it, here's the simplest way to keep your home in good health. Focus on Your Home’s #1 Enemy If you focus on nothing else, focus on moisture -- your home’s No. 1 enemy.

Water can destroy the integrity of your foundation, roof, walls, and floors -- your home’s entire structure. So, a leaky gutter isn’t just annoying; it’s compromising your foundation.

Keeping moisture at bay will improve your home’s effective age -- or as Dr. Oz would say, “real age” -and protect its value. It’ll also help you prioritize what you need to do. Here’s how: Follow This Easy 4-Step Routine

1. When it rains, actively pay attention. Are your gutters overflowing? Is water flowing away from your house like it should? Is water coming inside? 2. After heavy rains and storms, do a quick inspection of your roof, siding, foundation, windows, doors, ceilings, and basement to spot any damage or leaks. 3. Use daylight savings days or the spring and fall equinox to remind you to check and test waterrelated appliances like your washer, refrigerator, water heater, HVAC (condensation in your HVAC can cause leaks) or swamp cooler, and sump pump. It’s also a great time to do regular maintenance on them. Inspect any outdoor spigots and watering systems for leaks, too. 4. Repair any damage and address any issues and leaks ASAP. Don’t procrastinate when you spot minor leaks or drips inside your house. Ongoing small leaks can slowly erode pipes and fixtures, and even cause mold and mildew issues you won’t notice until it’s too late. Say you’ve got a bit of cracked caulk around the kitchen window. It may not seem like much, but behind that caulk, water could get into your sheathing, causing mold damage and rot. Before you know it, you’re looking at a $5,000 repair that could have been prevented by a $4 tube of caulk and a half hour of your time. Once you settle into a routine, it becomes easier to handle other maintenance tasks, which will only do more to protect and enhance your home’s value.

If You Want to Take Home Maintenance to the Next Level... If you’re a geek about home maintenance like we are, and you want to do more than water patrol, these ideas will help you keep your house in great shape. Give yourself an incentive to do

maintenance. Maintenance is your springboard to sexier projects like a kitchen remodel. Plan a roomper-year redo. This way you’re maintaining, fixing, and improving. For example: In your basement or crawl space: Check for dark stains that could signal plumbing leaks. If you find any leaks, fix them. § Check your ductwork for leaks that are wasting energy. § Clean the lint out of the dryer vent. The machine will last longer, and you’ll help prevent fires. § Caulk and seal basement windows to stop air leaks. In your kitchen: § Clean out all the cabinets, then wipe them down. It’s a great way to purge and get organized. Take a good look under your kitchen sink. Remove all the wastebaskets and cleaning supplies to help you spot any leaks, and fix them.

Re-caulk the seam between your backsplash and wall to keep moisture out. To give your whole kitchen a low-cost facelift, how about a new backsplash? Re-paint the walls using paint with a tough, semi-gloss sheen that stands up to repeated cleanings and resists moisture.

Establish a maintenance fund. Some sources say you should save 1% to 3% of your initial house price annually to pay for maintenance. On a $200,000 house, that’s $2,000 to $6,000 a year. Yeesh, that’s a big nut.

Alternatively, make it a goal to save enough money to do a major replacement project, so the bill won’t catch you off guard. Probably the biggest single replacement project you’ll have is your roof or siding. You can build up this fund over several years by paying yourself a monthly assessment -- whatever you can manage. Keep it in a separate account to avoid the temptation to tap it for hockey tickets or other impulse buys. If you need to replace the roof before you have a fund, an equity loan is an option. But consider very carefully. If you’re practicing maintenance in the way we’ve outlined here, you won’t need $2,000 per year to manage your home’s natural aging process. Some routine tasks, such as cleaning rain gutters and changing furnace filters, could cost you $300 or less per year. Your house takes care of you -- not just for shelter but as a financial asset. Return the favor and keep it hale and hearty by caring for it with regular maintenance.

The Big Chief 50K trail race is a loop course on a mix of single track and fire road in the scenic forests between Lake Tahoe and Truckee. You will run through mighty trees, take in breathtaking views and conquer rocky summits on your journey. The course travels between 6000 – 7500 feet of elevation and you will gain approximately 4500 feet during the run. The race starts and finishes in the Village at Northstar Resort in Truckee, CA.

Here's a partial list of lakes in Plumas County, Northern California all within easy reach from Truckee/Tahoe. These are the most well-known and popular lakes for camping, fishing and hiking. Lake Almanor, at 4,500 feet elevation and with 52 miles of forested shoreline, is the county's largest lake, offering year-round fishing and spectacular views of majestic Lassen Peak.

Gold Lake, in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area, offers hiking, camping and fishing in the summer and draws snow sports enthusiasts in the winter. 6,400 feet in elevation.

Little Grass Valley Reservoir, 3 miles south of the community of La Porte, sits at just over 5,000 feet in elevation. It is hugely popular with campers and fishing enthusiasts in the summer, and snowmobile enthusiasts in the winter.

Butt Valley Reservoir, near Lake Almanor, is widely known for camping and as a great fishery for trout. Round Valley Reservoir, located three miles above Greenville, is a warm water fishery containing bass and bluegill, and is a popular place to bring children because they're sure to make a catch. Antelope Lake, located 30 miles NE of the small town of Taylorsville in the Genesee Valley, is a popular camping and fishing spot. It sits at 5,000 feet in elevation and has 15 miles of shoreline. Bucks Lake, 17 miles southwest of Quincy, and at 5,200 feet in elevation, boasts 17 miles of shoreline, sandy beaches and tall pines. Bucks Lake attracts fishermen, campers, hikers and water sports enthusiasts in summer. Winter bring snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

Lake Davis, seven miles north of the City of Portola, sits at 5,800 feet in elevation and offers yearround activities. Camping, fishing (including an annual fishing derby) and hiking during the summer months, and a popular ice fishing tournament, sled-dog races and snowmobile poker runs in the winter. Nearby J&J’s Grizzly Store has just about anything you might need. Frenchman Lake is in the eastern end of the beautiful Sierra Valley. A high desert lake at 5,800 feet, it's nestled in the pines. Just out of Chilcoot, Frenchman is home to camping and fishing.
