MARCH 2018 MARKET NEWSLETTER Truckee, Tahoe Donner, Alpine/Squaw, Golf Course Communities, North and West Lake Tahoe, CA. The March equinox signals the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. It marks that special moment when the sun crosses the celestial equator going from south to north. In 2018, this equinox arrives on March 20th.
Daylight savings time begins
March 11th Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour
Our sunrise is earlier now, and nightfall comes later. Plants are sprouting. Winds are softening. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, people are enjoying the warmer days of spring. Meanwhile, south of the equator, autumn begins.

On Wednesday, December 20, 2017, Congress passed a comprehensive tax reform bill (otherwise known as "H.R.1"). President Trump signed the new tax act bill on December 22, 2017. Except where noted, the provisions of H.R.1outlined in this summary are generally effective January 1, 2018 through December 31, 2025. After that date, with some noted exceptions, the rules revert back to existing law.
The Act will have a significant impact on the taxation of corporations and individuals, and we encourage you to work with a tax professional to understand how these changes specifically impact your financial picture. The purpose of this document is to provide a high level overview of the impact of selected provisions of H.R.1 on US individuals, and to present topics to discuss with your financial advisor and tax professional as part of year-end planning. TDPUD Water-Efficient Toilet Rebate The TDPUD Water-Efficient Toilet Rebate Program encourages customers to change out their old, high-water using toilets to new, lower water use toilets. Many “older” homes and businesses (pre-1995) still have high-water use toilets that use between 3 and 7 gallons per flush (GPF). In 1995, the Federal toilet standards went into effect requiring toilets installed in new construction to use 1.6 gallons of water per flush or less. Recent advancements have allowed toilets to use 1.28 gallons per flush or less while still providing equal or superior performance. Beginning January 1, 2016, the California Title 20 appliance standard requires toilet to be 1.28 gallons per flush or less. This is 20 percent less water than the current 1.6 GPF federal standard. This rebate of up to $100 will help TDPUD water customers upgrade their toilets and use less water. How can I determine the Gallons per Flush (GPF) of my old toilet? †
•
•
If your home was built prior to 1995, then you likely have a toilet that uses 3 gallons or more per flush:
•
For older toilets, the GPF capacity may be stamped on the inside of the tank, or underside of the tank lid or there may be a date stamp inside the tank or on the underside of the tank lid-1994 or earlier suggests 3 GPF or greater.
•
Does the tank look like it would hold three or more 1-gallon milk containers?
Generally, newer toilet's gallons per flush are printed on the porcelain directly behind the seat, inside the tank or on the tank lid.
How can I provide proof that the old toilet has been decommissioned?
• • • •
You may provide a photo of the old toilet clearly showing it has been removed and made inoperable. You may provide a receipt from the landfill itemizing the number of toilets disposed of. If applicable, provide a receipt from a licensed professional for removal and installation of toilet. You may provide a small piece of porcelain from the tank of the removed toilet (placed in a plastic bag). LORETTO EL HET

TIPS ON HOW TO DRIVE IN THE SNOW
Truckee, Tahoe Donner, Alpine/Squaw, Golf Course Communities, North and West Lake Tahoe, CA.
TIPS ON HOW TO DRIVE IN THE SNOW It’s Practically a Whiteout
My Car Is Stuck in the Snow
Before you venture out, refill windshield washer fluid, clear snow from the roof, windows, windshield wipers, and front and back lights, and turn on low-beam headlights (high beams reflect off the snow and into your eyes). Once you’re on the road, don’t tailgate. “It can take up to nine times as long to stop in ice and snow, compared with ideal weather,” says Robert Sinclair, media relations manager at AAA. Your rule of thumb: When the car ahead of you passes a road sign, start counting; if you reach that sign before you get to 8, you’re too close.
Gently reverse the car a bit, then slowly move forward a little. Continue this rocking motion, occasionally wiggling the steering wheel to help the
To avoid scary skids and spinouts in the future, never stomp on the gas or brake pedal, and slow down dramatically well before making a turn or heading down a hill. “To prevent fishtailing when you know you’re about to go downhill, instead of braking, select a lower gear and let the engine manage the speed for you,” says Spitzner.
I’m Worried About Black Ice
OMG, I Need to Pull Over! Whether you’re facing engine trouble or treacherous weather, pull over onto the right shoulder, as far off the road as possible while remaining on level ground, and turn your hazards on. So you don’t freeze or waste fuel, run the heat for 10 minutes every hour—first check that the exhaust pipe is clear of drifting snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Stock the trunk with a collapsible shovel, an ice scraper, water, granola bars, and a windup flashlight for situations like this, says Kurt Spitzner, a driving instructor at Bridgestone Winter Driving School in Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Today, new advice applies to all: Look where you want the car to go and steer in that direction.
tread gain grip, until you make progress. Still nothing? For added traction, shovel out the tires, then sprinkle sand or non-clumping kitty litter in front of and behind the tires (or use the floor mats as a last resort). That should do it. Sinclair recommends investing in winter tires and swapping them in once cold weather begins, to prevent this situation.
The Car Is Skidding! The old rule to “turn into a skid” is from the days when most vehicles were rearwheel drive.
That notoriously slippery stuff usually forms when the temperature fluctuates above, then below, 32 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing snow to melt and refreeze to a clear glaze on the road. Be extra careful on bridges, at the bottom of hills, and in shady areas, where ice tends to accumulate. “If you encounter a patch, ease off the gas pedal to reduce your speed, and maintain smooth, steady steering,” says Spitzner. Fair warning: Driving an SUV doesn’t give you license to be a hot shot. “All- or four-wheel drive isn’t a magic technology that allows you to have traction no matter what,” says Sinclair.
