I was in Detroit this week, but I had no inclination to cross the border into Canada— although it was just there, a few feet away. Why? The U.S. —and Philadelphia in particular— feels like home, today more than ever.

O

n November 9th, despite the long election results night, I woke up earlier than usual, jump out of my bed faster, and before I knew it, I was out of the door, swifter to show up for work than I normally do. Latino voters, especially those of us who (full disclosure) did cast the vote with the secret hope of seeing the first woman president of the United States, were supposed to feel devastated, even afraid of what the future might hold. But ask any other entrepreneur in our community and you will be surprised how upbeat they may sound the week after. The U.S. feels like home, more keenly LEA EN aware as we are today of all of its virtues ESPAÑOL and all of its shortcomings— but home anyway, one we have fully adopted, even NEWS.com/OPINION though some institutions of the country are yet to adopt us in turn. It will be a matter of time, though. Take the political parties, for example, wrestling this week with the election outcome, the unexpected performance of the Latino vote, and its consequences. Regardless of which one is in charge in Washington, the day after didn’t feel like the end of the world, as it was announced to us, Latinos in particular. I wonder if it is precisely this political disenfranchisement we have grown used that leave us with this strange feeling of self-confidence, based perhaps on this simple realization: No one has taken away from us the same assets we had before election day: Our uncommon labor capacity, our tested entrepreneurial initiative, our desire to always go that extra mile and, no matter what, no desire to wait for handouts from anybody to improve the lot of our families, our communities, the cities we live in, and the great nation we are very proud to call home. The morning after looks uncommonly bright, because from the beginning, we’ve been used to looking through the inevitable clouds for the glimmers of hope.

Is Ken Salazar going to say a word about the loss?

T

he 2016 presidential elections allowed U.S. Latinos to reach several important conclusions: One, this community is orphaned of a political leadership of its own at the national level. Two, neither of the 2 parties is seriously interested in cultivating this new and growing segment of voters and make it part of their ranks and hierarchy. Three, it will take a serious organizing effort by Latinos themselves to bring out that vote and finally flex its political muscle to impact a nationwide election. A paradox of the current electoral politics in the U.S., to say the least. 16 years after the close call between Bush and Gore, the recent Hillary-Trump results also left a similar sense of a stalemate in a presidential

race — so close in the final result that it leaves a sense of illegitimacy for the winner and a hard-to-concealed indignation for the loser. Latinos were again a passive agent in this election, although they were implicitly at the center of it: Without the fantasy of a 2,000-mile wall on the border with Mexico, or the fiction created around “Millions of undocumented immigrants” ravaging the country, the Trump phenomenon wouldn’t have been possible to construct in the popular imagination. Thanks to Latinos, Donald Trump created the narrative that allowed him to build a coalition of mostly rural, conservative, resentful voters who bought his fiction of “making America great again” by deporting residents of the country in a multi-million scale, and building an impossible Wall he already was downgrading to “a fence”

FORMER U.S. SENATOR Ken Salazar, appointed by Hillary Clinton to be the chair of her transition team

in his interview with “60 Minutes” on Sunday. But the histrionic talents of Mr Trump, added to the incompetence of the Democratic Party campaign that was supposed to give us the first woman president, made this victory possible, even when the Republican party was completely fractured, but comfortably riding with the voice of a single man on the shoulders of a defenseless community. The silence of the so called leaders of the Latino community is deafening at this hour after the election. Former U.S. Senator Ken Salazar, appointed by Hillary Clinton to be the chair of her transition team, is yet to say a word about the devastating election result. Maybe it is about time to break the silence, Ken.. After all, there is not much else to lose.

TRUMP NO PODRÁ DETENER LA HISTORIA AL DÍA NEWS

A

A QUIENES TRUMP Y CLINTON NO CONVENCIERON

No puedo esperar cuatro años.

A

Banks make billions every year on credit card interest. Beneficial doesn’t offer credit cards. That should tell you something about our bank. At Beneficial Bank, we have a simple philosophy: If we do right by our customers, they will do right by us. That’s why we like debit cards instead of credit cards. With a debit card, you spend money you already have, which means no surprise bills at the end of the month and never paying a penny of interest. And with our Beneficial Bank Visa® Debit Card, you get cash back on your purchases along with the same fraud protection you get with a credit card. To us, debit cards just seem like the right thing to do.
