“LALO” SÁNCHEZ, “EL MASCARERO” WITHOUT BORDERS Long before Christopher Columbus discovered the New World, the pre-Hispanic tribes, established in the northern and central parts of the Americans, had already used masks as a way of expression. At that time, masks served as representations of gods, to participate in rituals and dances, but also in wars. The fierce Aztec warriors used them as a symbol of bravery, honor and military rank. Initially the masks were made of mud. In some cases with simple designs, but all of them full of great significance for its people. But, as some say, if you have a history you have a future. So it is not surprising that in the particular case of the masks, these items still remain in the popular culture of those whom descend from the first tribes, although they are not no longer used in the same terms they initially were. Today, the Aztec warriors and others across the world fight in the ring, and of course, the masks have their space in this scenario: they remain as a sign of prestige, mystery and honor.
