l estatus de ciudad santuario de Filadelfia está siendo atacado por todas partes. Con las declaraciones del Presidente Trump, en las que asegura que su misión será la eliminación de las ciudades santuario al recortar su financiamiento, y con la aprobación de la ley para el recorte de financiamiento a las ciudades santuario en el Senado de Pensilvania, el futuro financiero de Filadelfia se ve débil. El ataque particular de Trump se puede rastrear al mes de Septiembre cuando dijo en Phoenix “bloqueemos el financiamiento de las ciudades san-

a abarrotada carrera por el puesto de Fiscal de Distrito acaba de hacerse más sencilla con el reciente anuncio de Seth Williams. Un nuevo candidato, Larry Krasner, se subió a escena tras trabajar como abogado criminalista en la ciudad. Ha compartido que aprecia la retirada de Williams pero declaró que no tendrá nada que ver en su propia candidatura. “La decisión de Seth Williams de no buscar la reelección es en beneficio de la Oficina del Fiscal de Distrito. Debe ser elogiado por su decisión. Es hora de escoger un Fiscal que comparta nuestros valores en la reforma de la justicia criminal”, dijo Krasner. Otro contrincante, Teresa Carr Deni, quien ha enfrentado grandes represalias por su decisión de manejar un caso de violación de una prostituta en el que sentenció a los hombres de hurto de servicios, en una decisión que el Co-

Es deplorable cuán poco es el apoyo que los abogados reciben en ese tipo de casos”. Pero en una declaración más reciente ha compartido que “trabajaré con el Alcalde y el Comisionado para asegurar que las políticas de detención y registro se transformen en cosa del pasado y que Filadelfia permanezca como una ciudad santuario, donde cada residente es tratado de manera justa. Ahora más que nunca, nuestra ciudad necesita un liderazgo efectivo en la Oficina del Fiscal de Distrito para mantenerla a salvo protegiendo a nuestros ciudadanos de las extralimitaciones de la administración Trump”. Beth Grossman, una de las candidatas republicanas más notables para Fiscal de Distrito compartió sus declaraciones en el asunto asegurando que “lo que es crucial ahora yendo hacia delante, sin embargo, es que Williams es uno de los muchos casos que amenazan la ética por parte de oficiales públicos democráticos”. También declaró que considera esto un signo del establecimiento del partido Democrático en la ciudad, “es momento de un cambio. Es momento de un candidato Republicano, con más experiencia fiscal que ningún otro candidato y con la independencia de estar fuera de la maquinaria democrática, para restaurar la integridad de la Oficina del Fiscal de Distrito y el balance político en Filadelfia. comunidad, compartio en sus declaraciones que en un principio apoyaba a Williams pero considera que es momento para que alguien más tome el puesto. “Yo fui de esos que eran optimistas cuando él tomó el cargo, pero esas expectativas no fueron alcanzadas y sus problemas éticos y legales se han transformado en una contradicción para la oficina. Los abogados trabajadores y el equipo merecen ser dirigidos por alguien que de valor excepcional a la reforma de justicia criminal, la integridad, innovación y el servicio comunitario. Creo que la Oficina del Fiscal de Distrito en Filadelfia debería ser un modelo nacional de políticas progresistas, profesionalismo y seguridad pública. Es por ello que estoy postulándome. Espero poder traer mi pasión y experiencia a la oficina para que podamos seguir adelante y hacer grandes cosas por esta ciudad. Estos problemas pasarán próximamente a la historia mientras abrimos la puerta a una nueva era de excelencia en lo que debería ser la mejor Oficina de Fiscal de Distrito del país”, declaró Negrin. Seth Williams ha anunciado el día de hoy que no se postulará a Fiscal de Distrito de Filadelfia. Williams fue electo en el 2009, y siendo el actual candidato designado, representaba la emoción de tener el primer Fiscal de Distrito de color además de un ganador anticipado. Y aunque esta estrella fue fugaz, su período como Fiscal de Distrito ha estado plagado de escándalos e investigaciones. Aunque su escándalo más notable ha sido la reciente multa récord de 62.000 dólares, Williams también ha estado bajo investigación federal por parte del FBI en el 2015 y recibió otras represalias. No siendo extraño a la controversia, Williams también ha sido objeto del ridículo público debido a la divulgación impropia de 89 regalos y 5 fuentes de ingresos durante el 2015. HA sido esta especulación la que ha facilitado la escalada de otros candidatos a Fiscal de Distrito, tanto dentro como fuera de la boleta Democrática. n

México: caso de deportada de Arizona muestra cambio en prioridades de EE.UU. EFE

l Gobierno mexicano afirmó que el caso de Guadalupe García de Rayos, deportada a México tras vivir cerca de dos décadas en Arizona (EE.UU.), muestra las nuevas prioridades de ese país con Donald Trump en el poder, pero aseguró que no ha habido por ahora un aumento de deportados. El secretario de Exteriores mexicano, Luis Videgaray, indicó a la cadena Televisa que la deportación de la mexicana se hizo de un modo “más rápido” que el habitual, hasta el punto de que “no dio tiempo de que llegara el cónsul” mexicano en la zona, lo que evidencia que ha habido “un cambio en la prioridad” de Washington. El caso de García de Rayos, casada y

con dos hijos, se está convirtiendo en un emblema de la reivindicación de los derechos de los migrantes latinos en EE.UU. en la era Trump. Bajo las nuevas directrices ejecutivas de EE.UU., inmigrantes como ella se han convertido en prioridad de deportación, en su caso debido a un cargo que le fue presentado por trabajar con un número de Seguro Social que no le pertenecía. mpezó humildemente en el sótano del edifio de ASPIRA y hoy, más de 30 años después, el Taller Puertorriqueño finalmente se levanta orgulloso en un nuevo y moderno edificio de 25 mil pies cuadrados, todavía en el mismo vecindario donde nació. Sobre la base duradera de querer servir a la comunidad y sus necesidades, el Taller ha decidido crecer en el Norte de Filadelfia. Posee actualmente altos techos, ventanales del suelo al techo y un plano de suelos abiertos, el nuevo centro del Taller Puertorriqueño es impresionante. Proveerá los mismos elementos que la comunidad siempre ha recibido del Taller: una tienda de recuerdos culturales, aulas de clase e incluso una galería de arte. El espacio ahora ofrece una versión mejorada de lo que las antiguas instalaciones ofrecieron durante 40 años. “Esto es lo que represenREAD IN ta este edificio: crecimienENGLISH to, un ícono del orgullo y NEWS.com/OPINION un espacio de celebración de nuestra cultura y lo que somos”, dijo la Directora Ejecutiva Carmen Febo San Miguel. Pero, como bien recalca la Directora, el trayecto a las nuevas instalaciones no fue siempre fácil, como tampoco lo fue la decisión de mantenerlo en el centro del barrio norte de filadelfia, donde siempre ha residido. Fue gracias a una búsqueda de financiamiento que llevó casi 10 años, con varias colaboraciones de la ciudad y del estado, el inquebrantable apoyo de la comunidad y la dedicación de mantenerse accesibles para la comunidad que siempre han buscado atender. Así pues, el equipo del Taller presionó y trabajó para hacer del centro lo que es hoy en día. El taller ha ayudado a moldear a jóvenes artistas en la comunidad desde hace 40 años, dictando clases desde actuación hasta formación en bellas artes.

LAS NUEVAS INSTALACIONES del Taller tienen salas dedicadas a manualidades específicas, como el taller de arcilla. Es este compromiso con la comunidad, con la juventud y con la preservación cultural lo que ha impulsado al Taller durante los años y ha formado a artistas como David Antonio Cruz y Michelle Ortiz. Febo explicó que “si nuestra comunidad no está conectada con su historia, con su expresión, con su aprendizaje cultural, perderán por completo esa conexión con lo que los identifica y lo que los hace quienes son”.

UNA HISTORIA DE JUSTICIA SOCIAL

Desde el sótano de un edificio de ASPIRA hasta un edificio donado por Domingo Negron, uno de los fundadores del Taller y actual dueño de GRAN Printing, el cambio de ubicación de Taller no ha impactado su apoyo en la comunidad. “Taller nace en un momento donde existía una conciencia por el derecho de las minorías que estaban siendo marginalizadas en la sociedad americana. Eran los finales de los 60 y principios de los 70, y todos hablaban de asuntos de identidad”, dijo Febo. Comenzó como un esfuerzo para proveer a la comunidad de alternativas para jóvenes puertorriqueños que estaban abandonando la educación en gran número al sur de Filadelfia. Taller quería enseñar a los jóvenes hombres sobre el arte y el comercio de la imprenta digital antes de que se encontraran en otras rutas. “Y Filadelfia no era muy diferente. Un grupo de artistas querían hacer algo que estuviera más enfocado en la juventud y utilizar el arte y la identidad cultural y la inmersión de dónde provienes y la conversación sobre quién eres y de dónde vienes como una herramienta para mantener a las personas comprometidas, para mantener a la juventud comprometida con el estudio, la academia, el desarrollo del liderazgo, aquellos programas que ASPIRA estaba realizando”, dijo Febo.

El grupo comenzó con Rick Hall y Domingo Negron, junto con un grupo de estudiantes de bachillerato y universitarios, a partir de pequeños programas. “Nos llamaban radicales porque intentábamos hacer algo que nadie más había intentado antes”, dijo el antiguo director. Hall había comenzado una clase con estudiantes de bachillerado y Negron acababa de terminar una temporada en Vietnam, “Yo estaba en la escuela de artes justo al regresar de Vietnam. Estaba terminando la escuela e iba a meterme en los negocios. Así que algo estaba sucediendo en ASPIRA donde un grupo de estudiantes – de bachillerato – y algunos otros de la universidad (tan sólo algunos pocos Latinos asistían a la uni-

versidad en aquél entonces)” dijo Negron. “Un colega llamado Rick Hall trabajaba en la Biblioteca y estaba interesado en lo que sucedía con los puertorriqueños en Filadelfia. Obtuvo un espacio en ASPIRA y comenzó a decirle a la gente que fuera a hacer cosas, así que yo también fui”. Contó la historia del crecimiento de la población puertorriqueña en el sur de Filadelfia y cuán seguido los estudiantes que atendía estaban migrando a zonas más al norte de la ciudad, “la meta de todos era mudarse al boulevard”, dijo Negron. Pero compartió que, a pesar de la historia común y el crecimiento de la comunidad, muchos de los jóvenes que conocía se encontraban sin ningún sentido de identidad ni de hogar.

“Lidiábamos con jóvenes de 2da o 3era generación de inmigrantes puertorriqueños con un inglés quebrantado, con un español débil. Estaban en el limbo. Y en aquél entonces la ciudad era un poco racista”, dijo. Pero el esfuerzo finalmente dio sus frutos, y Negron y su grupo lograron ser elegibles para financiamiento con una beca inesperada. “Tan pronto como obtuvimos el financiamiento los problemas comenzaron. Porque en ese punto era el Taller, pero no era una entidad. Necesitábamos ser una agencia para recibir el dinero – creo que eran algo así como 400.000 dólares – y era destinado a resolver los problemas más grandes en el momento, sobretodo Eddison niños latinos y negros que estaban abandonando los estudios, y todo sucedía en grandes cantidades, sobretodo chicos que estaban sin hacer nada. Nosotros intentábamos hablar sobre eso, sobre la arraigada cultura pandillera”, dijo. Tras recibir el subsidio, pudieron ampliar sus programas y trabajar con otros que creían en el trabajo que se estaba llevando a cabo. Tras muchas maniobras y esfuerzos para obtener apoyo, finalmente consiguieron una ubicación cercana con ayuda de la iglesia. “Nos anexamos a la Price Church en la 6th y Venango”, dijo Negron, “Teníamos el primer, segundo y tercer piso del anexo de la iglesia”. Fue entonces que Negron donó un edificio que poseía y no puso bajo el nombre del Taller como locación permanente. Frecuentemente trabajaban con las conexiones que tenía ASPIRA con las escuelas y los programas educativos, pero algunas tensiones surgieron, según Negron, una vez que el Taller fue capaz de obtener más financiamiento gracias al subsidio. “Me pidieron que despidiera, que me deshiciera de Rick y querían que yo adoptara otra posición – yo iba a ser el director gráfico y la junta iba a dirigir el Taller. PORTADA este era el fin”. Encontrándose en la difícil posición de perder la compañía que había amado y a un buen amigo, Negron abandonó el Taller con Hall. Tras un ínterin y un par de años, Carmen Febo San Miguel trabajó con Johnny Irizarry y éste último se convertiría en el director ejecutivo del Taller. Actualmente Irizarry trabaja como director de La Casa Latina en la Universidad de Pennsylvania, pero fue en el Taller su primer trabajo como director ejecutivo.

EL TALLER TIENE UNA NUEVA CARA

Tras mudarse de Puerto Rico con su familia para proseguir su educación, Irizarry nunca había tenido una experiencia como director ejecutivo, pero comentó que Carmen Febo San Miguel creyó en él y le dio la oportunidad tras haber realizado unas prácticas con la compañía durante un tiempo. “Me dieron labores puntuales, como escribir propuestas de financiamiento – estas eran cosas que jamás había hecho en mi vida”, dijo Irizarry. Pero existía la convicción de que el trabajo podía llevarse a cabo con tiempo y esfuerzo de parte de personas dedicadas. “Juntos fuimos capaces de expandir el programa. Fuimos capaces de traer artistas desde Puerto Rico. Tuvimos una gran apertura. Pudimos conectar con la comunidad y adoptar nuevos miembros de junta, y lograr un trabajo más significativo en cosas que estaban impactando la comunidad, como el VIH/SIDA”, dijo el antiguo director. Mientras la epidemia del SIDA seguía impactando la comunidad, el Taller se mantuvo fiel a su misión y creó nuevas rutas creativas para apoyar realmente a la comunidad en sus necesidades. En un giro de amplitud, el grupo se volcó a la apertura del programa artístico, en búsqueda de apoyo hacia el sector científico y social cercano a la enfermedad. “Aprendimos cómo colaborar y utilizar realmente los recursos que teníamos al alcance. No éramos expertos en ciencias ni en las necesidades sociales de los pacientes con SIDA. Nosotros aportamos un elemento de experiencia artística y estrategia”, dijo Irizarry. Pero antes de apoyar a la comunidad a través de programas, Irizarry compartió que era importante para él y para los otros el construir el Taller a través de los esfuerzos comunitarios que involucraran a la comunidad antes de siquiera empezar. “Abrimos un segundo espacio en Huntington, y cuando lo hicimos fuimos de puerta en puerta explicándole a la gente quiénes éramos y lo que estábamos haciendo. Que el Taller estaba abriendo y que tendríamos un estudio abierto allí, teatro y clases de danza y arte”. Y fue a través de ese trabajo y de la conexión con la comunidad que el Taller fue capaz de trabajar y de crear algo realmente único para la comunidad. 8 / FEBRERO 15 - 22, 2017 / ALDÍAnews.com

“Cuando abrimos en el espacio a medio renovar, era allí donde se impartían clases, era un sótano y a veces hasta dictábamos cursos de guitarra los sábados en mi oficina. Utilizamos el espacio de manera realmente creativa y creo que construimos cosas significativas a través de las cuales se sentían respectados y comprometidos”, dijo Irizarry. Pero Irizarry les diría que el éxito del Taller fue a gracias a las alianzas de larga duración que la compañía forjó y su dedicación a seguir formando nexos.

“Construimos una alianza que no existía entonces con las organizaciones culturales afroamericanas y latinas – para entonces realmente era el Taller Puertorriqueño ad umma. Jessie Bermúdez debe ser mencionado cuando hablamos de ese período del Taller porque el ni siquiera tenía un espacio para Pamerla”, comentó el antiguo director ejecutivo. Así pues, el Taller construyó su nombre y ha continuado atendiendo a la comunidad en el Norte de Filadelfia de maneras que nadie anticipó. “Fuimos capaces de lograr cosas que luego Carmen y la junta decían ‘¿Qué pasó? Eso era increíble’ y realmente era lo que sentían”, recordó Irizarry.

EL CENTRO CRECE CON LA GENTE

Inaugurado en diciembre del 2016, el nuevo “Centro Corazón Cultura” es el resultado de 10 años de propuestas subsidiarias, aplicaciones a financiamiento y casi 100.000 dólares en donaciones de la comunidad. Carmen Febo San Miguel declaró que fue el resultado de mucho trabajo y esfuerzo continuado de cada persona que ha puesto una mano en sustentar el Taller durante los años. “Sé que recibo el crédito de los resultados que hemos obtenido pero quisiera decir que es el trabajo de nuestro equipo y que mucho de ello fue suerte y estar en el lugar indicado en el momento indicado”, dijo Febo. El momento más significativo en la historia de Taller ha sido la construcción del nuevo edificio, aún cuando han tenido varias locaciones desde su concepción. Desde el sótano de ASPIRA, hacia el anexo de la iglesia y finalmente al edificio que Negron donó, la actual directora ejecutiva Carmen Febo San Miguel descubrió que el Taller necesitaría expandirse para servir mejor a la comunidad. El nuevo financiamiento que permitió el terreno reciente del Taller y la expansión de los programas sucedió poco después de que fueran capaces de coordinar el apoyo de varios líderes comunitarios incluyendo la Calle Mayor y la Concejal Sánchez. La Comisión de Planificación de la ciudad recomendó la aprobación de una ley introducida por la concejal María Quiñones-Sánchez para cambiar la zona de la propiedad del proyecto. El proyecto costó entre 10.5 y 11 millones de dólares; un fondo inicial de 1.5 millones provino del Departamento de Comercio durante la administración Street, posteriormente recibieron 5 millones del Redevelopment Assitance Capital Program de fondos del estado, y también fueron finalistas en una donación de

LAS MÚLTIPLES SEDES del Taller son testigos mudos del esfuerzo de décadas por preservar en el vencindario Latino el centro cultural más antiguo de la comunidad. Arriba, 3 de las sedes que antecedieron el arribo del Taller a su nuevo edificio inaugurado en diciembre pasado. 300.000 dólares del ArtPlace America. Taller ha recaudado más de 150.000 dólares de fuentes privandas para el centro cultura, que incluye compromisos con corporaciones y fundaciones. El resto provino de miembros de la comunidad y de la McClean Contribution. El último empujón fue un esfuerzo comunitario que hizo posible el Taller, según dijo Miguel, “recaudamos cerca de 100.000 dólares de la comunidad. Creo que es un reflejo de cuán importante es el trabajo en arte y cultura con la juventud de la comunidad y cuán significante es el rol de este espacio dentro de una comunidad que ha sido obviada durante tantos años”. Tras años de arduo trabajo, dedicación y persistencia de Carmen Febo San Miguel, el Taller Puertorriqueño fue capaz de adquirir un nuevo edificio y crear un centro cultural en una superficie que ahora cuenta con 2.3 acres en la North 5th and West Huntington. La nueva instalación, conocida como Centro Cultural El Corazón, es un lugar para mejorar los programas educativos que ya estaban organizados, y servir como una nueva fundación para las expresiones y experiencias culturales en el corazón de la Filadelfia latina. La firma de diseño Wallace Roberts & Todd fue fundamental en el desarrollo de planes para el nuevo edificio que incluye salas flexibles y multiusos para eventos y clases, oficinas y un espacio para la creación de nuevas empresas, un café y una tienda para ayudar a mantener el edificio y un plano de planta versátil. Pero la directora dice que lo más importante es que el nuevo edificio representa la comunidad. “Nosotros como comunidad hemos logrado lo que ha sucedido aquí. Como comunidad podemos sentirnos orgullosos de todo lo que se lleva a cabo aquí. Es un mensaje para que sepan que estamos aquí. Nuestra comunidad es vibrante; nuestro arte y nuestras expresiones culturales son vibrantes. Vengan a aprender, vengan a experimentarlo. Únanse a nosotros”, dijo Febo. No todos están tan emocionados sobre el nuevo presupuesto, pues existen preocupaciones al escuchar a la comunidad. El fundador Domingo Negron ha declarado que le preocupa que el nuevo presupuesto suponga un problema para servir a la comunidad en diversas maneras. “El Taller siempre ha crecido con la gente y a veces con grandes financiamientos tienes que seguir lo que la fuente quiere pero creo que es

bueno e increíble lo que se ha logrado”, declaró.

PROTEGIENDO LA IDENTIDAD DE LA COMUNIDAD

Al entrar a las instalaciones se puede ver una venta de libros y una tienda de regalos llena de banderas, libros arte y mucho más. El mantenimiento del orgullo cultural y de la identidad en comunidades urbanas es una misión que no suele estar en las agendas educativas. Pero esta es la misión en la que creen los fundadores del Taller y sobre la cual construyeron su organización, convencidos de que con un fuerte entendimiento fundacional de la historia de la comunidad y de la identidad puertorriqueña originaria, los estudiantes estarán más preparados para enfrentar al mundo. “Hemos comprendido lo que ha surgido de

El Taller fue creado para actuar funcionalmente como centro cultural de aprendizaje y como archivo de la comunidad. “Logramos que los jóvenes que se identifican como Puertorriqueños y que desconocían la historia del país se sientan conectados con esa herencia”, dijo la directora.

MANTENIENDO A LOS JÓVENES ARTISTAS COMPROMETIDOS

Desde los inicios del Taller, el arte ha sido más que una actividad o una labor para jóvenes. Es una manera en la que los estudiantes se comprometen con el arte y mejora la percepción sobre sí mismos para un mejor futuro. “Para nosotros el arte no es sólo para sí mismo, sino una herramienta, es una presencia, una

expresión, una vía, un espacio para la creación y la celebración de todo este talento y esta energía creativa que luchamos tan fuertemente por desarrollar, y es por ello que es necesario este espacio, es el corazón de la comunidad”, dijo Febo. Lo que alguna vez fue un programa que se dedicaba a lidiar con la alta tasa de abandono escolar, el Taller es ahora una alternativa para los jóvenes que podrían escoger vías más peligrosas. “Las fuerzas que los están desviando en tantas direcciones son múltiples. Si se matriculan en actividades positivas es genial, pero desafortunadamente muchas otras actividades son negativas”, dijo Febo. Pero es el programa creativo y la dedicación a la comunidad lo que mantiene vivo al Taller. “Luchamos para desarrollar maneras en las cuales podemos hacerlo más atractivo y atajarlos. Una vez que son parte del programa, es más sencillo. Ellos entienden. Les llega al corazón”, dijo la directora.

DISEÑANDO EL FUTURO Mientras el Taller ha sobrevivido como programa artístico juvenil en la comunidad del Norte de Filadelfia, con las nuevas instalaciones, el nuevo programa puede expandirse mucho más para atender a estudiantes en cada etapa de su desarrollo. Siendo actualmente un programa K-12, la Directora Ejecutiva Carmen Febo San Miguel dice que espera subir el programa a un novel más comprensivo, bien sea dotándolo de una programación Pre-K durante el año o logrando una estructura K-16 para quienquiera que lo necesite. “Estamos buscando desarrollar un programa educativo a largo plazo. Bien sea un programa extra curricular o un pre-K, no estamos seguros”, declaró Febo. Carmen Febo también recalcó que este tipo de programación expande el impacto del Taller y las oportunidades educativas para la comunidad. n medio de la erupción nacionalista aupada por la victoria de Donald J. Trump en las presidenciales estadounidenses, muchos artistas, poetas y creadores se han involucrado en cuerpo y alma en las manifestaciones que han tomado las calles

del país. La necesidad de un movimiento cultural que reivindique los principios fundacionales de la patria de los hombres libres, ha diseminado por las redes sociales todo tipo de representaciones e interpretaciones. Tal fue el caso de Denice Frohman, cuyo vídeo “Acentos” se ha vuelto viral, en un momento perfectamente oportuno. Mi nombre es Denice Frohman. Soy poeta, educadora e intérprete. Creo arte para el cambio social”. De esta manera decide Denice presentarse a sí misma en su período profesional actual, en miras de conectarse con nuevos lectores y potenciales escritores. “Gran parte de mi trabajo se enfoca en la identidad y en las tensiones entre las historias que contamos sobre nosotros mismos, las historias que nos contamos los unos a los otros y las historias que son READ IN contadas sobre nosotros. Así que gran parte de mi trabajo se enfoca en la raza, en la etnicidad, en el género y en la sexualidad. Estoy intentando subvertir las narrativas dañinas sobre personas que se identifican como yo lo hago.” Quisimos saber cómo llegó a dar clases de poesía, y su historia es de amor a primera vista: “Yo trabajaba en un museo; tenía un trabajo de nueve a cinco en el Franklin Institute, un museo de ciencia en Filadelfia. Disfrutaba mucho de mi trabajo, y un día tuve la oportunidad de enseñar poesía en un taller en el Science Leadership Academy, un colegio Philadelphia con el que el museo colaboraba. Nunca había dado clases en mi vida, tan sólo había estado escribiendo. Quedé enamorada tras la primera clase.” También compartió con nosotros su trasfondo multicultural y cómo se enfoca en su proceso de auto-descubrimiento a través de la poesía:

“Es a través de la escritura que podemos concebir otro mundo. Es por ello que necesitamos escritores y poetas, pues este mundo no está funcionando, no funciona para nadie, hay guerras, pobreza, homofobia, odio, sangre. Necesitamos imaginar y diseñar una nueva manera de relacionarnos los unos con los otros” Denice Frohman

“Mi madre es puertorriqueña y mi padre judío. Durante mi crianza el asunto de la educación bilingüe era un tema sensible. Había personas en los Estados Unidos que se preocupaban en aquel entonces pues tenían la percepción de que aprender más de un idioma podría confundirte, podía confundir a los niños. Hoy por hoy hay muchos jóvenes hijos de padres Latinos que no hablan un español fluido. Puedes entender algunas palabras aquí y allá, pero poco más. Eso tiene que ver con las presiones del ser “americanizado” o “asimilado” y todas esas cosas a las que nos oponemos hoy en día.” Al preguntarle sobre el rol de la poesía en la política actual, ella no duda ni un segundo y responde con firmeza: “Existe una razón por la cual en algunas partes del mundo los poetas son aprisionados al hablar. Y es porque somos quienes contamos la verdad, somos los narradores de his-

torias. Intentamos de la manera más honesta posible señalar las injusticias en el mundo, levantar la voz contra las desigualdades. Así mismo somos los guardianes de la humanidad de alguna manera. Preservamos aquellas cualidades que nos hacen humanos y el significado del amor mutuo, del cariño. La poesía peligrosa. Pronunciarse es peligroso, porque retamos el poder. Siempre retaremos el poder. Lo personal es político. Entonces creo que particularmente en el escenario actual de los Estados Unidos - porque no quiero hacer generalizaciones - necesitamos que todos levanten la voz, especialmente todos los poetas, todos los escritores, todos los músicos y todos los pintores.” Así pues, ¿Qué deben hacer los escritores y artistas en la América de Trump? “Creo que de alguna manera el trabajo es siempre el mismo, pues si bien Trump fue elegido, él no inventó los problemas que tenemos. Estos problemas le precedían. Él es sencillamente una representación de muchos de esos asuntos: la intolerancia, la xenofobia, la homofobia, el sexismo, el racismo la supremacía blanca; todo esto ya existía. Y de nuevo, no puedo garantizar nada lo que va suceder, pero lo que sí voy a decir es que estaré presente y estaré activa haciendo todo lo posible para asumir mis talentos en un espacio colectivo y seguro para intentar manifestarme contra lo que está sucediendo, pero el trabajo es urgente, eso tenlo por seguro.” ■ Para leer la entrevista completa visite nuestra web

o deja de ser un reto escribir el perfil de un autor que se define a sí mismo como un especialista en retratar personas. Es el caso de Julio Villanueva Chang, escritor y periodista peruano, autor de biografías de Gabriel García Márquez, el tenor Juan Diego Flórez o el famoso cocinero Ferran Adrià. Nacido en Lima en 1961, Villanueva empezó a escribir de joven, para poco a poco convertirse en uno de los periodistas mejor considerados de Latinoamérica. Ganador del premio del Premio de la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) por sus crónicas, en 2001 decidió fundar la revista literaria Etiqueta Negra, considerada el equivalente del New Yorker latinoamericano. Su idea era apostar por el periodismo narrativo y bien documentado, que hiciera frente a la amenaza de Internet y a la tiranía de la inmediatez informativa. Quince años más tarde, Etiqueta Negra ha conseguido convertirse en una revista literaria de referencia en Latinoamérica y las crónicas

y Villanueva se ha convertido en uno de los periodistas más respetados del continente hispano. Gracias a su experiencia como cronista y redactor de perfiles, Villanueva se pasa medio año viajando por el mundo para impartir su taller de escritura de perfiles con el título De cerca nadie es normal. “Un escritor de perfiles es un excavador de personalidades”, dijo Julio Villanueva Chang, en una conferencia reciente en Barcelona, primera y última parada de su tour de un mes y medio por Europa. Su firme oposición al nuevo modelo informativo de noticias rápidas e información inmediata sigue siendo la filosofía principal de Etiqueta Negra. “Lo que me importa es saber cómo hacemos para que alguien se conmueva con una frase. Nuestra labor es conseguir que algo que en principio podía parecer de poco interés se acabe convirtiendo en algo interesante» dijo Chang en una entrevista con Yorokubu en 2015. Para captar el interés del lector, el título es fundamental, según Chang. Por eso, lo primero que escribe Chang es el título. Durante todo el proceso le servirá de «faro intermitente» y de «promesa». Después redacta un subtítulo, que siempre tiene forma de pregunta. «Si el título es el anzuelo, el subtítulo debe ser el ancla», es-

i alguna vez se preguntaron cómo sería un día en la vida de un bailarín profesional Cubano, Malpaso Dance Company quiere mostrárselos. Durante su primer tour internacional y su primera visita a Filadelfia, la compañía presentará dos de sus mayores piezas: “24 horas y un perro” y “Por qué sigues”. El show se llevará a cabo en el Prince Theater en conjunto con NextMove Dance y traerá

consigo una ecléctica mezcla de ballet, danza moderna y estilo Afro-Cubano. La primera interpretación de “24 horas y un perro” está planteada al estilo musical del compositor de jazz, y ganador del Grammy, Arturo O’Farrill, y combina la música expresiva y teatral con el estilo rítmico de la danza. La obra está inspirada en la rutina diaria de un bailarín en la Habana, desde las rutinas temprano en la mañana hasta las horas dedicadas a perfeccionar la técnica dentro del estudio. La historia culmina en la G Street, un destino popular de la vida nocturna de la ciudad. El trabajo original de la compañía es un esfuerzo creativo que toda la audiencia disfrutará el día 15. “24 horas y un perro fue la primera creación colectiva de la compañía. Los bailarines están muy involucrados en el proceso entero de improvisación para el desarrollo del material”, dijo Fernando Sáez, uno de los fundadores de Malpaso. La segunda mitad de la obra es una interpretación de la obra de Ronald K. Brown Why You Follow (2014), y es una exploración del ritmo Afro-Cubano. Cuando tres bailarines que tenían carreras prominentes en la danza cubana se juntaron para crear su propia compañía, muchas veces, sus shows como solistas eran el material para sus actuaciones. Pero una vez que la compañía creció a 16 personas sin siquiera haber abierto audiciones, los fundadores decidieron evitar la presión sobre la danza y dejar que el trabajo orgánico fluyera dentro de los integrantes de la compañía. “Sentimos que las colaboraciones son la manera más eficiente de luchar contra nuestras suposiciones, de enfrentarnos entre nosotros y nuestros profesores y acumular soluciones”, dijo Sáez. Desde diciembre del 2012 hasta la actualidad, la compañía creció constantemente, experimentando con estilos de danza y encontrando un estilo colectivo que reflejara verdaderamente quienes eran y lo que realmente significaba asistir a un show de Malpaso. “Era importante para nosotros pensar en la gira tras haber creado la compañía. La intención al principio era desarrollar y consolidar un buen repertorio. No estábamos pensando tanto en el tour – esa no era la meta – era una consecuencia del trabajo que habíamos desarrollada y una consecuencia de las relaciones que habíamos logrado con coreógrafos internacionales”, dijo Sáez. Cubano hasta la médula, uno de los fundadores compartió que si bien nunca ha sido su intención crear un show de danza cubana, “no tuvimos opción sino expresar nuestro sabor cubano cuando bailamos, pues somos cubanos. Creo que está presente en nuestra coreografía por la corporalidad de los bailes y la versatilidad de los bailarines”, declaró Sáez. n
