La próxima protesta, pensada en una escala mucho mayor, está agendada para el próximo 1 de Mayo, coincidiendo con el Día Internacional del Trabajador. ¿A dónde ha ido todo el mundo?”, se preguntaría cualquiera que el jueves pasado se diera una vuelta por el sur de Filadelfia. Negocios con las persianas cerradas, calles vacías, clases sin alumnos… una vista poco habitual fuera de un día de vacaciones. Pero justamente el “Día sin Inmigrantes” en Filadelfia no fue un día festivo, sino una llamada a la acción, según los líderes locales que organizaron la protesta. El Día sin Inmigrantes fue coordinado “para demostrar lo que pasaría si algún día se producen en Filadelfia redadas en gran escala,” explicó Olivia Vázquez, organizadora de la comunidad de Juntos. Y mientras los negocios permanecían cerrados y los niños se quedaban en casa, un grupo de cerca de 100 manifestantes se reunía en un modesto local del sur de la ciudad. Entre ellos, Erika Almirón, directora ejecutiva de Juntos, que dio una rueda de prensa a los medios de comunicación de la ciudad para explicar su firme postura en contra de la retórica anti-inmigración iniciada por la Casa Blanca en el último mes, y para dar voz a la masa silenciosa que representa su organización. “Lo que podéis ver aquí es que todo el mundo quiere que sus derechos humanos sean respetaREAD IN dos. No sé si se trata de ENGLISH un tema de ciudadanía o no ciudadanía. Y aunque la vía de la ciudadanía no sea lo más deseable en opinión de algunos, Juntos se compromete a mantener su misión de proteger a la comunidad inmigrante de esta ciudad desde su sede, aquí, en la Sexta con Tasker.” A pesar de las fuerzas que tiene en su contra, el grupo pide que, sobretodo, se protejan los derechos básicos que les están siendo negados a muchos. “Necesitamos pensar cómo penalizar a los jefes que están explotando a gente en esta ciudadí. Y ofrecer más protección, no solo para nosotros, sino para todo el mundo,” dijo Almirón sobre las condiciones de trabajo que sufre la comunidad inmigrante. Aunque en ciudades como Filadelfia el debate se centra en cómo descriminalizar a las comunidades de color y asegurar que los servicios de la ciudad y los negocios alcancen a las comunidades inmigrantes, la amenaza inminente de las redadas del ICE no deja de ser real. El miedo a las redadas está basado principalmente en la retórica utilizada por el mismo

Y hasta que esto no cambie, no seremos una ciudad santuario,”, dijo Almirón. Según los miembros de la organización, el exceso de vigilancia policial en determinadas comunidades, así como el estigma generado durante la campaña electoral y bajo la presidencia de Trump, han puesto el estatus real de Filadelfia en peligro. La clave, según Almirón, es asegurar que la ciudad sea un lugar en la que el ICE no pueda actuar. “Deberíamos pensar nuevas maneras de limitar el acceso de los agentes federales de inmigración a nuestra ciudad, creando zonas libres de ICE, por ejemplo,” dijo Almirón. Aunque las fuerzas del orden de la ciudad se ha comprometido a no detener a nadie en nombre del ICE, eso no inhibe al ICE a seguir actuando en los límites urbanos. Y con el aumento de la retórica anti-inmigración de Trump y la aprobación de la Ley 10 por parte del Senado de Pensilvania, más allá del ICE, es un estigma contra el que hay que luchar. “Así que mientras él [Trump] utiliza el caso de una persona para describirlos a todos, bási-

Todo lo que sabemos es que la ley está en movimiento y que debe ser aprobada. Necesita llegar a las instancias superiores y que debe asignársele un presupuesto. Nuestra preocupación siempre ha sido que no se transforme en una letra escarlata para nuestra comunidad sino que de hecho sea algo que las personas sientan que pueden mostrar y no algo que los identifique como inmigrantes. Se necesita una variedad de personas que puedan acceder a ella y que los datos sean protegidos del entrecruzamiento con las fuerzas de inmigración. Donald Trump ha mencionado el programa DACA y dijo que quería lidiar con ello “con el corazón”. Pero más tarde, durante el mismo día, mencionó que los bebés protegidos por DACA podrían eventualmente transformarse en violadores. ¿Qué opina la comunidad Latina al respecto? ¿Sobre él criminalizándonos? Quiero decir, creo que es histórico para esta nación. Creo que hemos visto la criminalización de inmigrantes – tenemos una línea histórica detrás nuestro sobre la migración, que demuestra que ha habido momentos de reorientación de inmigrantes desde este país – y siempre ha comenzado por la criminalización y luego la deportación. Así que cuando nuestros cuerpos ya no le sean útiles al país, intentarán sacarnos. Sabemos que todos aquí formamos una comunidad que se ama los unos a los otros. PORTADA que cuando él intenta generalizar y describirnos a todos desde un solo caso, es una muestra llana de racismo. Él es un racista y un dictador. Necesitamos tener claro lo que enfrentamos. DACA ha protegido a muchos hasta el momento, pero ¿existe algún tipo de preocupación sobre la cantidad de información que se encuentra en las manos del gobierno gracias a DACA? Creo que en este momento no tenemos muy claro qué hará con el programa DACA. Y creo que en este momento es obvio que existe una comunidad preparada para luchar por cada uno de nosotros y si viene a por nosotros, creo que estamos listos para darle pelea y creo que todos los jóvenes que está amenazando, necesitan protección. Necesitamos proteger a todos aquí, a sus padres, a sus seres queridos. Tienen nuestra información, y es por eso que las redadas han seguido llevándose a cabo, ¿no es cierto? Así que no creo que sea nada nuevo. Pero hemos visto en Seattle cómo han detenido a un beneficiario de DACA sin récord criminal, y entendemos que eso es lo que se viene y es por ello que convocamos a un día sin inmigrantes como

éste, y convocaremos a una protesta mucho más grande el 1ero de Mayo, a nivel nacional. ¿Cómo luce un programa de inmigración ideal? Creo que todos queremos que se nos respeten los derechos humanos. No sé si se trata de ciudadanía o no, lo que sé de las conversaciones con todos es que quieren un trabajo digno, ser tratados con respecto, escuelas con financiamiento, ser capaces de ir a casa y ver a sus familias, que algunos tienen años sin ver. Entonces creo que es de eso de lo que deberíamos estar hablando, cuáles son las necesidades de nuestra comunidad, por qué las personas vienen a este país, cuáles son las causas fundamentales de esto y cómo las abordamos, en vez de criminalizar la comunidad. Entonces, sólo para clarificar, no debería haber represión contra la inmigración. ¿o deberíamos simplemente tener una inmigración fluida y esforzarnos en su ciudadanía una vez lleguen a nuestro país? Creo que la ciudadanía es una opción y creo que algunas personas lo objetarían, pero también creo que hemos visto que no siempre es la solución. Entonces realmente luchamos por nuestros derechos humanos, más allá de la ciudadanía. n

oca gente conoce bien las principales preocupaciones de la comunidad inmigrante. Al margen de la retórica política, no son muchos los que prestan atención a las necesidades de esta importante parte de la población de Filadelfia. Esta semana, una madre de dos niños, una activista y un beneficiario del DACA compartieron sus testimonios con la prensa en la sede de Juntos. Coincidiendo con la huelga del “Día sin Inmigrantes”, que pretendía mostrar el impacto verdadero de la población inmigrante en la ciudad, sus voces ayudaron a reforzar el mensaje. Lea las declaraciones- llenas de emoción y esperanza - de Olivia Vazquez, Olivia Prince y Edgar Vijegas más abajo.

“Buenas tardes a todos y gracias por venir. Me llamo Olivia Vasquez y soy organizadora comunitaria de Juntos. Para los que no hayan oído hablar de nosotros, Juntos es una organización en el sur de Filadelfia que lucha por nuestros derechos como inmigrantes, así como por nuestros derechos educativos y derechos humanos. Como ustedes saben, miles de familias y negocios cerraron hoy y no enviaron a sus hijos a la escuela, o bien hicieron huelga
para mostrar lo que sucedería si se producen redadas a gran escala en Filadelfia. Estas incursiones no son nada nuevo, nuestras familias han sido despedazadas y aterrorizadas desde la administración Obama y sigue sucediendo, incluso en ciudades santuario como Filadelfia. La semana pasada, vimos grandes redadas en todo el país y aunque no han sucedido en Filadelfia, necesitamos estar listos para cuando lo hagan. Filadelfia es una ciudad santuario todavía, y sabemos que tenemos mucho más trabajo por hacer, porque seguiremos potenciando a nuestras comunidades, educándolas en sus derechos. En no abrir sus puertas al ICE o la policía. Y a OLIVIA nuestros aliados, en cómo ayuVASQUEZ darles a documentar no sólo las redadas de inmigración, sino también las detenciones policiales que siguen ocurriendo en nuestra ciudad. La protesta de hoy fue también una demostración de que nuestras comunidades ya no tienen miedo - que nuestras comunidades están listas para luchar - y que tenemos que luchar hasta que nuestra comunidad en Filadelfia se convierta en una verdadera ciudad santuario que defiende y expande lo que es el santuario. El 1 de mayo, llamaremos a la huelga de trabajo y al boicot coincidiendo con el Día Internacional de los Trabajadores, para apoyar nuestras políticas y poner fin a la criminalización de las comunidades negra y marrón. “Hola mi nombre es Olivia Ponce, y soy líder comunitaria, aquí, en Juntos. Vine a este país hace 17 años desde México. Tengo dos hijos, uno que es ciudadano estadounidense y otro que está temporalmente bajo protección gracias al DACA. Hoy estamos aquí reunidos para solidarizarnos con todas las familias que siguen siendo afectadas por las redadas masivas y las deportaciones de sus seres queridos. Sabemos que esto ocurre todos los días y que bajo la nueva administración, OLIVIA PONCE que hizo campaña contra el odio hacia todas las personas de color y minorías, nuestras familias son más vulnerables que nunca. Vivimos en Pensilvania, un estado que ha ayudado a dar la victoria a alguien como Donald Trump, un estado donde se encuentra el centro de detención familiar Berks, donde las madres y los niños han sido detenidos y privados de su libertad durante 17 meses; madres que, como yo, buscan una vida mejor para sus hijos. Un estado donde las leyes anti-inmigración están a punto de aprobarse. Por todo esto necesitamos que nuestro gobernador Tom Wolf esté al lado de nuestras comunidades de inmigrantes, y también que rechace cualquier ley anti-inmigración con su poder de veto. Nuestra ciudad, Filadelfia, es conocida como una ciudad santuario, pero nosotros como
ciudadanos de Filadelfia sabemos que esto no es totalmente cierto. El ICE nunca ha dejado de vagar por las calles entrando en nuestras casas y separando a las familias de sus seres queridos. Todavía hay policías que criminalizan a todas las personas de color. Filadelfia fue una de las ciudades que firmaron para terminar las detenciones del ICE, y aunque este es un paso en la dirección correcta, todavía queda mucho por hacer. Trump ha declarado una guerra contra nuestra comunidad y contra muchas otras, como afroamericanos, musulmanes, mujeres o la comunidad LGBTQ. Hoy queremos dejar claro que Filadelfia, como ciudad del amor fraternal, necesita hacer más para ofrecer su santuario no sólo a las comunidades de inmigrantes sino para todas las comunidades. Si queremos asegurar que por el momento nuestros derechos y los derechos de todos no sean violados, nuestros políticos deben luchar con nosotros, porque todo ser humano merece vivir una vida de dignidad y respeto.”

“Buenas tarde a todos. Mi nombre es Edgar Vijegas. Tengo catorce años y soy el líder juvenil de Juntos. Soy estudiante de octavo curso en Mary Washington, aquí en Filadelfia. Mis padres llegaron de Mexico hace diecisiete años para poder darnos a mi y a mis futuros hermanos un futuro mejor. Hoy, yo y la mayoría de mis compañeros no fuimos al colegio en solidaridad con el “Día Sin Inmigrantes”. Hemos hecho esto para demostrar a América que sin inmigrantes este país no funciona.
En mi clase, más del 30% de los estudiantes son Latinos, y en total más de la mitad de los alumnos de la escuela son Latinos. Si nos deportan a todos, imaginen qué vacía se quedaría. Las escuelas de nuestros barrio sufren ya de falta de financiación y en los colegios de los alrededores -en los demás vecindarios negros y “marrones” - hay tanta policía que parece que nos vayan a encarcelar cualquier día, en lugar de ser un sitio al que vayamos a aprender. Es injusto que tantos adolescentes tengan que preocuparse ahora de que sus padres puedan ser deportados, de que un día regresemos del colegio y nos encontremos con que nuestros padres ya no están en casa. Mis padres son los únicos que pueden hacerse cargo de mis hermanos y de mi. Si les deportan, tendré que dejar el colegio y encargarme yo mismo de ellos. Mi familia sufrirá económicamente y tendré que encontrar un trabajo para ayudarles a tirar adelante. Mi familia y yo de hecho ya vivimos en la pobreza, igual que muchas otras familias inmigrantes del país. Los jóvenes americanos no tendrían que sufrir este tipo de miedo, ni tampoco este odio por parEDGAR te de nuestro gobierno, solo VIJEGAS por el color de nuestra piel. No deberíamos estar preocupándonos de que nuestras familias se separen. No deberíamos preocuparnos de que nuestras escuelas se queden sin recursos. No deberíamos preocuparnos de ser criminalizados por el color de nuestra piel o nuestro estatus de inmigrante. Sabemos cuán estresados pueden estar los adolescentes en la escuela, y lo que la sociedad piensa de ellos. Y ahora tenemos que preocuparnos además de que el gobierno nos oprime. Los jóvenes son el futuro. Somos la próxima generación y representamos lo que será este país. magine que acaba de poner un pie en un país extraño. Se siente cansado, hambriento y aliviado, pero sobretodo tiene miedo. Mucho miedo. Reúne los cuatro bártulos que viajan con usted y respira hondo, preparándose para la nueva etapa de su viaje. Sin embargo, todo a su alrededor le resulta extraño: los sonidos, los olores, el paisaje… Hasta el aire que respira le parece diferente. Ha conseguido llegar hasta aquí, mucho más lejos que otros, pero es ahora cuando empieza el reto verdadero. Solo el tiempo puede decir lo que le ocurrirá a partir de este momento, pero ya sabe que de entrada nada será fácil. Desde el preciso instante en que ponen un pie en los Estados Unidos, los inmigrantes indocumentados se enfrentan a inacabables obstáculos: desde las amenazas permanentes que conllevan los fallos inherentes del sistema legal americano o los agentes despiadados del ICE, a las dificultades del día a día, como las barreras de comunicación o los problemas para encontrar alojamiento y empleo. Entre las numerosas trabas a las que se enfrentan día sí y día no los inmigrantes sin papeles, el efecto que tiene todo esto en su salud mental y psicológica puede ser el más dañino. Y, todavía peor, del que menos se habla. Esto es algo que Mónica Posada conoce muy bien. Como responsable de los servicios de salud mental en “Puentes de Salud”, una organización sin ánimo de lucro que aborda los temas de salud y bienestar de los inmigrantes Latinos de Filadelfia, Mónica Posada tiene plena consciencia de los numerosos problemas que afectan a la salud mental de esta comunidad. Cuando se pone a analizar la precaria situación en la que se encuentran los inmigrantes Latinos indocumentados al llegar a los Estados Unidos, Mónica dice que la “raíz de todos estos problemas es el miedo.” “Estos individuos viven en un constante estado de ansiedad y temor, y este estado mental se transfiere de padres a hijos.” La palabra que Mónica prefiere usar para describir cómo se sienten los indocumentados es “espantados”. Y el estado permanente de espanto al que está sometida la comunidad Latina mientras se enfrenta a los prejuicios y amenazas del gobierno de los Estados Unidos es difícil, sino imposible, de gestionar. A NIVEL INDIVIDUAL, los problemas psicológicos pueden ser difíciles de tratar –especialmente en los niños. O peor aún cuando la amenaza procede de fuentes externas, como la policía o las autoridades estatales, lo que hace muy complicada la búsqueda de soluciones personales.
este problema enraizado en la población Hispana de los Estados Unidos, tanto la documentada como la indocumentada, es necesario entender los múltiples aspectos que definen el problema. Es cierto que las Autoridades Sanitarias han detectado que la población mexicana-americana de los Estados Unidos es más vulnerable a sufrir problemas de salud como resultado de presiones sociales, lo que a menudo les lleva a una falta de estudios y a niveles de renta per cápita más bajos que cualquier otra minoría de los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, estos problemas se extienden más allá de la comunidad mexicana-americana y se detectan en otras comunidades de inmigrantes Latinoamericanas. Uno de los factores subyacentes más importantes para explicar diversos problemas de salud es el estrés. Desafortunadamente los inmigrantes indocumentados son un grupo condenado a sufrir experiencias muy estresantes. Trabajan duro durante muchas horas, ocu-
pando posiciones de mucha exigencia a cambio de salarios insubstanciales e injustamente bajos. Además, sufren la amenaza constante de ser deportados o detenidos a la primera de cambio, sabiendo que cualquier paso en falso puede llevarles de vuelta a su país. Dado que tampoco cuentan con un fácil acceso a los servicios médico-sanitarios, el riesgo de que todos estos factores pasen factura a su salud mental y emocional debería ser un motivo de preocupación y acción inmediata. historias de horror sobre el trato que reciben estas personas por parte de dichos agentes. “El miedo no es simplemente una consecuencia de cómo se gestionan estos asuntos,”, dice. “Es parte de una estrategia planificada para cumplir con unos objetivos.” Para luchar contra este problema, Mónica y sus compañeros de “Puentes de Salud” proporcionan a los inmigrantes indocumentados soluciones prácticas, como fichas y folletos en español que informan claramente sobre sus derechos legales y ofrecen consejos sobre cómo comportarse ante un encuentro con un agente del ICE, o si son amenazados con ser deportados. Estos métodos prácticos son complementados con acercamientos más terapéuticos para abordar su necesidad de expresarse emocionalmente y recibir tratamiento. No obstante, Mónica ha detectado un aspecto muy particular a la hora de tratar los problemas de salud mental de la comunidad Latina: la existencia de un tabú cultural en lo que concierne a los problemas y terapias psicológicas en general. En muchas de estas comunidades, el hecho de ir al psicólogo o sufrir algún tipo de problema psicológico es visto como una señal de debilidad extrema, o de locura, y recibido con desdén. Mónica y su equipo trabajan para demostrar cuán importante es gozar de una buena salud mental para el bienestar general. n
l Gobierno de Donald Trump estableció esta semana las nuevas directrices de control migratorio en EEUU, entre ellas acelerar el proceso de deportación de inmigrantes indocumentados y contratar a 15.000 nuevos agentes migratorios. Entre las directrices, firmadas por el secretario de Seguridad Nacional, John Kelly, figura la contratación de 10.000 nuevos agentes para el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) y 5.000 más de la Oficina de Aduanas y Fronteras (CBP). “El auge de la inmigración ilegal en la frontera sur ha sobrepasado a las agencias y los recursos federales y ha creado una significativa vulnerabilidad en la seguridad nacional de EEUU”, subrayan las directrices. Asimismo, se especifica un cambio en las políticas que precisa que no solo perseguirá a los inmigrantes indocumentados con cargos criminales violentos, si no también aquellos que hayan “abusado” de los beneficios públicos o que, “a juicio de un agente de inmigración, puedan suponer un riesgo para la seguridad pública y seguridad nacional”. El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional, agrega, “ya no eximirá a clases o categorías” de extranjeros indocumentados de “una potencial aplicación de la ley”, es decir, de una deportación. Esto supone un notable cambio respecto a las directrices marcadas durante el anterior Gobierno de Barack Obama, que ordenaba no llevar a cabo estas deportaciones en base a

Por otro lado, el Ejecutivo de Trump otorga mayor capacidad legal a los agentes migratorios federales, así como permitirá que agentes estatales o locales puedan sumarse a estas labores de control migratorio. n
Se mantiene protección legal para “dreamers” beneficiados con DACA EFE

l Gobierno de Donald Trump estableció esta semana las nuevas directrices de control migratorio, con una expansión masiva de la capacidad de deportaciones, pero de la que quedan exentos los jóvenes indocumentados (“dreamers” o “soñadores”) que llegaron a EEUU como menores de edad.
En el documento del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional se especifica que estos jóvenes indocumentados “no” se verán afectados por las nueves órdenes de la agencia federal. El Programa de Acción Diferida (DACA), impulsado por el Gobierno de Barack Obama en 2012, ha permitido frenar la deportación de 750.000 “soñadores”. n

EE.UU. prepara instrucciones para acelerar las deportaciones EFE

l Departamento de Seguridad Nacional prepara instrucciones para que los agentes migratorios aceleren las deportaciones de las personas en situación irregular en el país, según documentos internos obtenidos por varios medios estadounidenses. Las circulares están firmadas por el secretario de Seguridad Nacional, John Kelly, y se dirigen a los directores de las agencias encargadas de la seguridad fronteriza y los servicios migratorios, según publican hoy medios como CNN, The New York Times y
Washington Post. Estos documentos no se han publicado oficialmente, por lo que podrían sufrir cambios, y requieren aún de la revisión de la Casa Blanca, según el Times. Se trata de extensas directrices para aplicar las órdenes ejecutivas del presidente de EE.UU., Donald Trump, en materia migratoria y de seguridad y, en líneas generales, dan poder a las agencias para detener y deportar con más facilidad a los inmigrantes en situación irregular en el país. Los documentos no incluyen la activación de la Guar-
dia Nacional para detener inmigrantes en 11 estados, algo que aparecía en un borrador filtrado a la prensa el pasado viernes sin la firma de Kelly y que la Casa Blanca desmintió. Asimismo, la circular no incluye cambios sobre el programa aprobado por el expresidente Barack Obama (2009-2017) para proteger de la deportación a los jóvenes indocumentados que llegaron al país cuando eran niños (DACA, por sus siglas en inglés), una medida que Trump ha prometido abordar “con corazón”. LOS AGENTES DE inmigración de EE.UU. detuvieron a 680 inmigrantes en la primera tanda de redadas de la presidencia de Donald Trump, informó el Gobierno, que defendió que las operaciones se centraron en individuos que supusieran “amenazas a la seguridad pública”. EFE dice que esta política “se abordará en una futura circular”. La guía sí incorpora nuevas directrices que permitirían a las autoridades aplicar un procedimiento de “deportación acelerada” a los inmigrantes “que no pueden probar que estuvieron en Estados Unidos de manera continua durante dos años antes de ser detenidos y de que se determinara su situación irregular”. Hasta ahora, las agencias solo habían usado esta deportación acelerada para los inmigrantes detenidos a 100 millas (160 kilómetros) de la frontera en los 14 días siguientes de haber entrado en el país o para los que llegaron por mar y no por un puerto de entrada. Otra de las indicaciones recomienda usar una medida poco utilizada hasta ahora que permite devolver a los solicitantes de asilo al territorio contiguo desde el que llegaron a Estados Unidos. Esta directriz podría devolver a los solicitantes de asilo centroamericanos, que llegan a través de México, al otro lado de la frontera mientras esperan los procedimientos de asilo, en lugar de internarlos en un centro estadounidense. La circular de Kelly ordena la creación de un sistema de videoconferencias para permitir que los individuos expulsados puedan tener sus audiencias del proceso de asilo sin tener que volver a entrar en Estados Unidos. La guía también hace más difícil que los niños que entran en el país de manera irregular sean tratados como “menores
extranjeros no acompañados”. El documento llama a acabar con los “abusos” actuales, al afirmar que, en algunos casos, estos niños “continúan recibiendo protección” como menores no acompañados incluso si tienen padres o tutores que viven de manera irregular en Estados Unidos. Según la ley del país, un menor no acompañado es aquel que no tiene a sus padres con él o disponibles para cuidar de él en Estados Unidos. Ahora, las nuevas directrices apuestan por procesar a los padres si se demuestra que pagaron a traficantes para acompañar a sus hijos a cruzar la frontera. El martes, el Caucus Hispano, la agrupación de congresistas de origen latino en el Congreso estadounidense, expresó su “enfado” y “tristeza” por las redadas de los agentes de inmigración del pasado fin de semana ordenadas por el Gobierno Trump en numerosos puntos del país. Aunque Trump ha asegurado que la acción forma parte de su promesa electoral de “capturar a los criminales, a los malos criminales, con historial de abusos y problemas y echarlos”, las organizaciones de defensa de los inmigrantes advierten que los indocumentados con faltas leves o sin antecedentes también se ven afectados por el aumento de las redadas de deportación. n Para más noticias de política visite nuestra web

¿Qué te llevó a incursar en el medio de la medicina? De hecho, siempre estuve dudoso sobre lo que quería hacer, pero me gustaba mucho la medicina. Así que pensé que sería un buen primer paso. Estuve trabajando en el medio de la tecnología de rayos X durante tres años. Ahora quiero meterme de lleno en la salud pública, para lo que creo que mi trasfondo laboral en el sistema de salud podría ayudar. ¿Cómo te involucraste en el Comité de Asesoría Millennial del Alcalde? Fue el pasado agosto cuando se publicó la postulación. Desde que me gradué en el 2014 estuve como voluntario en la comunidad LGBTQ de Filadelfia y en otras organizaciones, tratando de involucrarme. Cuando vi la aplicación, pensé que sería una buena manera de ayudar a una población más amplia. READ IN ENGLISH ¿Cuáles son los problemas que NEWS.com/OPINION ves? Particularmente en la comunidad LGBTQ de Filadelfia existe un agravante a la hora de abordar los problemas del racismo sistémico. Creo que una parte del Comité de Asesoría Millennial permite abordar esos problemas dentro de la comunidad que amo, y de la que he sido muy cercano, pero también podemos abrir la mirada de todos los barrios de la ciudad, pues es un asunto que nos incumbe a todos. Uno de tus trabajos fue publicado en Radiologic Technology. Cuéntanos de esa transición de estudiante a técnico. Creo que es importante levantar las voces de los jóvenes. Existe, definitivamente, mucho por aprender, pero tenemos la experiencia y eso es importante. Mientras me graduaba de mi programa de rayos X, quise escribir algo sobre la ayuda a los estudiantes que apenas entran al campo de trabajo, como era mi caso, o a estudiantes que entraban a su último año, para que entendieran
que la transición no siempre es fácil, pero es posible. Existen vías para hacerlo más fácil. Muchas personas temen ir al doctor o incluso hacerse chequeos. ¿Cómo explicas a tus pacientes que su salud es importante? Hago lo mejor que puedo para que mis pacientes entiendan la importancia del cuidado personal, para luego poder ayudar a otros. Aunque es difícil muchas veces entender tu cuerpo y las cosas que suceden allí o lo que quienes asisten en salud intentan explicarte, es importante entender que ellos están haciendo todo lo que pueden para ayudar y entenderte. Con todo lo que haces, ¿a qué dedicas tu tiempo libre? Me gusta echarme en el sofá a ver Netflix, pero la realidad es que soy voluntario en una liga de dodgeball donde soy el mánager, y trato de hacer algo de ejercicio o yoga, para calmarme sobretodo. ¿Qué ha sucedido hasta ahora con el Comité de Asesoría Millennial del alcalde Jim Kenney hacia dónde crees que va? Hasta ahora hemos tenido sólo una reunión sobre lo que debemos estar esperando y para conocernos los unos a los otros. Es importante porque somos 21 personas y venimos de trasfondos totalmente distintos. Veo que el comité este año hará lo que esté en su haber para apoyar a los comités que se encuentran constantemente marginalizados y espero que para el final de año podamos crear algunas iniciativas que faciliten esas experiencias. ■

La ilustradora colombiana Juana Medina ganó el pasado enero el premio de literatura infantil Pura Belpré al mejor autor latino por Juana & Lucas, un cuento que realza los valores del bilingüismo y la multiculturalidad. ANDREA RODÉS

n el año 2002 Juana Medina llegó a Estados Unidos con intención de empezar a trabajar como fisioterapeuta, la carrera que había estudiado en su Bogotá natal. Sin embargo, se topó con tantos problemas para convalidar los títulos académicos, que al cabo de dos años, decidió dejar el tema y ponerse a estudiar diseño y animación. “Me ha gustado dibujar desde muy pequeña”, explica por Skype esta joven ilustradora colombiana residente en Washington DC, donde compagina su labor de ilustradora con la de profesora de animación en la George Washington University. Medina nunca imaginó que su decisión de cambiar de carrera sería un acierto tan grande. Diez años después de graduarse en la Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), la artista acaba de ganar uno de los premios de literatura infantil para autores latinos más reconocidos de Estados

Unidos: El Pura Belpré Award, un galardón anual concedido por la Asociación Americana de Bibliotecas (ALA) desde 1996 a aquellas obras que ensalcen la diversidad y riqueza de los valores hispanos.
UN ABRAZO Y ESPABÍLENSE
“Es un libro totalmente autobiográfico”, explica Medina en referencia a la obra premiada, Juana & Lucas. El libro, dirigido a niños entre siete y nueve años, narra la historia de una niña colombiana llamada Juana que viaja por primera vez a los Estados Unidos en compañía de su abuelo y de su perro. Juana está emocionada porque visitaran un parque de atracciones y podrá conocer a su superhéroe favorito, Astroman. Pero antes de emprender el viaje, tendrá que estudiar algo de inglés. “Cuando era chica, mis padres dijeron que me llevarían a Disney World. Era mi primer viaje a los Estados Unidos y estaba muy ilusionada con poder conocer a Mickey Mouse, pero mi madre me decía que Mickey solo hablaba inglés, y que por tanto, tenía que aprender inglés. Yo me quejaba todo el rato: el dizque inglés, READ IN le llamaba yo”, recuerda ENGLISH Juana Medina. “Después NEWS.com/OPINION llegamos a Disney World y resultó que Mickey Mouse casi no se movía, y ni siquiera hablaba”, añade, riendo. A la protagonista del libro le ocurre lo mismo. Al llegar a Estados Unidos, la niña colombiana se da cuenta de nada es tan perfecto como imaginaba: “Astroman le da un abrazo y eso es todo”, dice la autora. Para Juana Medina, hay una conexión entre lo que ocurre en su cuento y la realidad de los inmigrantes latinos que llegan a los Estados Unidos soñando con el “American Dream.” “Estados Unidos es un país que de una abrazo al llegar, pero luego debes espabilarte por tu cuenta”, dice.
HABLAR ESPAÑOL, MOTIVO DE ORGULLO
La autora también quiso resaltar en su libro que la protagonista regresa a Bogotá tras las vacaciones, “porque no todos los latinos vienen a Estados Unidos para quedarse. Aunque yo soy un mal ejemplo”, bromea. Medina lleva quince años viviendo en Estados Unidos y de momento no tiene intención de regresar a su país. Le espera un año de nue-

Silvia Baptiste vos proyectos, como los dibujos que prepara para ilustrar el poemario del poeta chicano Juan Felipe Herrera, laureado por el Congreso de Estados Unidos en 2015. “Nunca pensé que los libros infantiles acabarían siendo mi profesión”, admite la artista, que hasta ahora se había dedicado más a los proyectos de juego y animación, o a ilustraciones para niños más pequeños. Juana & Lucas (el nombre verdadero de un perro que tuvo la autora cuando era chica) va dirigido a niños que ya han aprendido a leer, “aunque no leen de corrido completamente. “La idea es que sea una introducción a la lectura, que cojan el gusto a leer y se familiaricen con algunas palabras en español”, dice. “Pero también era importante para mí que no se clasificase como un libro solo para niños latinos”, señala El motivo de introducir palabras en inglés y en español es que aprendan a valorar la riqueza del bilingüismo y la pluralidad cultural. Y en el caso de las familias latinas, para que entiendan que ser bilingüe sea un motivo de orgullo. “En mis tours por las escuelas de país he detectado que los hijos de muchas familias hispanas se avergüenzan de reconocer en público que hablan en español”, se lamenta Juana que, animada por el premio, ya está trabajando en un segundo episodio de Juana & Lucas.
El motivo de introducir palabras en inglés y en español es que aprendan a valorar la riqueza del bilingüismo y la pluralidad cultural. Y en el caso de las familias latinas, para que entiendan que ser bilingüe sea un motivo de orgullo.

Nacida en Cidra, Puerto Rico, Pura Belpré (1899-1982) fue la primera bibliotecaria hispana de la New York Public Library. Empezó los estudios de Magisterio en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, PURA BELPRÉ pero al emigrar a Nueva York en 1920 abandonó su objetivo de convertirse en maestra para empezó a trabajar en una biblio“Creo que es bueno que existan este tipo de teca pública. Tras una larga experiencia como asistente del departamento de español en la biblioteca pública de Harlem, en la 115th), Belpré fue finalmente contratada por la New York Public Library, convirtiéndose en la primera empleada Boricua de la institución. Entre sus logros destaca la implementación de sesiones de estudio bilingües en la sede de Harlem, la adquisición de libros en español y la celebración de festividades latinas, como el Día de los reyes Magos. Tras su muerte, en 1982, la biblioteca pública de la 115th en Harlem sigue siendo un centro cultural de referencia para la comunidad latina, especialmente portorriqueña, de Nueva York. También gracias a Belpré, muchas bibliotecas de Nueva York tienen hoy más recursos y actividades educativas en español. En el 2011 se publicó Pura Belpré: Storyteller, un doacumental sobre la vida de Pura Belpré, disponible en el Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños del Hunter College. n

na evidencia: la manera más fácil de complacer un público es entregarle lo que espera. Basta con ratificar prejuicios, confirmar estereotipos, y todo el mundo sale tan contento. Nada nuevo. En política le llaman demagogia, lo teorizaron los griegos : al día de hoy es el arma de batalla de campañas populistas como la de Trump. El cine comercial, el estadounidense sobretodo, también ha sabido sacar provecho, por supuesto. Desde hace varias décadas la industria de Hollywood se dedica exclusivamente a reproducir en la pantalla grande, de un modo idealizado, las
imágenes y los mitos que constituyen el ideario de su audiencia y que, en cierta medida, la industria misma sembró para poder explotarlos luego. Millones y millones de personas pagan para escuchar lo que ya saben, ver lo que imaginan, y así regresar a casa con la tranquilidad de estar en lo correcto. En Moonlight, quizá la mejor película del año, se trata justamente de recorrer el mismo proceso pero en sentido inverso : la idea central es retomar lugares comunes, reunir estereotipos y convocar prejuicios para luego desmontarlos paso a paso, minuciosamente, a lo largo de una narración que, precisamente porque niega la compla-

cencia, mantiene al espectador al borde de la silla. Quizá habría que decir que Moonlight es, antes que nada, una película hermosa, lírica, llena de momentos poéticos, como lo indica su título. No hay una trama, en el sentido estricto de la palabra, con un conflicto y un desenlace, solo fragmentos de una vida estructurada en tres partes : niñez, adolescencia y adultez. El personaje es un afroamericano homosexual en un
barrio marginal, Chiron, un ser vulnerable tratando de descubrise y afirmarse en un espacio en el que aún prima la ley del más fuerte. Su historia, quizá en otra película, sería la historia lastimera de un chico que lo ha perdido todo : el amor de su madre, el respeto de los otros chicos, las ganas de vivir, el sentido de la identidad. Pero en la película de Barry Jenkins, la historia de Chiron es, en medio del desgarramiento, algo totalmente distinto. Moonlight es, en el fondo, aunque cuesta verlo, una historia de amor sacada de Hollywood, pero situada en un contexto y vivida por un tipo de personajes que, justamente, desmienten el mito del amor comercial. Así como desmonta el estereotipo del vendedor de drogas, el de la madre adicta a la heroína o el del homosexual que se ha liberado de las presiones sociales, Jenkins le da la vuelta al mito más poderoso que se ha inventado el cine en Estados Unidos. Lo maravilloso en Moonlight es que el amor –por la vida, por el otro, por uno mismo– al liberarse del corsés de las fórmulas, aparece como algo insólito, pocas veces visto. Algo simple y precioso, como el agua o la luz de la luna. ■
