emprano en la mañana del sábado, cincuenta mil personas se reunieron en la autovía Ben Franklin para la Marcha de las Mujeres en Filadelfia. Como parte de un movimiento internacional, la marcha fue planeada como un esfuerzo para organizar la resistencia contra la administración Trump por los derechos que muchos protestantes sienten que se perderán durante su período. Se ha especulado que es uno de los pocos movimientos que ha unido a tantos movimientos por la justicia social. La multitud representaba diversos intereses incluyendo la reforma por la inmigración comprensiva y el #BlackLivesMatter. Los organizadores de la protesta planificaron la marcha en nueve semanas tras las elecciones en conjunto con las marchas gemelas en Nueva York, Washington y Chicago. “Trabajo en política y he organizado por 16 años y soy de Filadelfia. Originalmente planeaba ir a Washington, pero la organizadora del estado, Marie Zallick Nordic me puso en contacto con Emily Norris quien nunca había organizado en su vida, y a través del sector no lucrativo y a través de varias donaciones pequeñas logramos 60.000 dólares para hacer

Martin, una de las organizadoras de la protesta. “Fue genial porque sabíamos que lo queríamos, pero con las donaciones y la respuesta que tuvimos, nos dimos cuenta que todos queríamos”. Dijo. Con alrededor de 50.000 personas protestando en Filadelfia y más de 100.000 en Nueva York y en Washington respectivamente, un total de 250.000 personas estaban marchando en tan sólo esas tres ciudades. Con varias marchas pequeñas surgiendo en los Estados Unidos, 3.7 millones de personas protestaron a nivel nacional, una de las protestas más grandes en la historia. “Inicialmente era ir a marchar a Washington, pero vivo en Filadelfia y pensé que esto sería importante para los locales, mostrar el apoyo a una marcha nacional. Creo que muchos de nosotros estamos molestos y activos siguiendo el resultado de la elección y se trata tanto de estar contra lo que la administración Trump representa como de estar a favor de nuestros asuntos particulares”, dijo Rachel Valleta, una manifestante del área. Las protestas locales en Filadelfia le dieron la oportunidad a aquellos que no podían viajar a las marchas más grandes en el norte y en el sur de la ciudad, de mostrar su apoyo y solidaridad por sus causas. El Alcalde Kenney habló sobre la importancia de la marcha, especialmente con los obstáculos que ha recibido por algunas de sus políticas actuales, incluyendo el estatus de ciudad bajo la cuarta enmienda. “Creo que tengo la responsabilidad como Alcalde en una ciudad que se encuentra amenazada por la administración. Y que no echaremos para atrás, no abandonaremos las ciudades santuario, no abandonaremos los derechos LGBT ni los derechos civiles, sencillamente no lo haremos. Los obstáculos que ha enfrentado la ciudad ha incluido cortes en el financiamiento federal debido a las políticas de Filadelfia de interactuar con la Oficina de Inmigración y Aduanas. “Mi madre viene de Venezuela. Se mudó aquí y encontró una oportunidad fenomenal – se ha enamorado del país. Y es injusto ver cómo hemos retrocedido un poco donde los ciudadanos americanos estaban dispuestos a trabajar con los inmigrantes y dispuestos a aceptarlos. Y ahora, sencillamente pareciera estar volviéndose más difícil para los inmigrantes expatriados que vienen a adaptarse a la cultura y al país. Como mujer y como Latina no me perdería esto, debo pelear por los derechos que creo que podríamos perder”. Dijo Marisa Velazquez, una manifestante. En miras de avanzar, muchos manifestantes han expresado tener poca o ninguna idea de cuáles son sus planes en el futuro. Sin una organización específica para guiar sus métodos de resistencia, muchos están improvisando. “Muchos de nosotros estamos coreando por Paternidad Progrmada, por derechos homosexuales. Creo que es tanto un proceso de sanación como puede ser un espacio vigorizante para avanzar”, dijo uno de los voceros, “¿Podemos llevar esto a un siguiente nivel y transformarlo en un movimiento?” y creo que estamos en el borde de eso y estoy emocionada por avanzar”, dijo Rachel Velleta, una manifestante. Y esto afecta a personas donde viven. Paternidad Programada está aquí para millones de mujeres, hombres y jóvenes en el país a quienes proveemos con asistencia sanitaria asequible y de calidad. Los americanos entendemos eso. Sin nosotros no tendrían a dónde ir. Pero es también lo que simbolizamos. Simbolizamos no sólo los derechos reproductivos sino los derechos humanos y civiles, y a tacarnos es atacar a todas las mujeres”, declaró Steinberg. Paternidad Programada ha tenido que enfrentar la amenaza de perder su financiamiento pues ha continuado siendo un problema para la administración que surge. Especialmente con una orden ejecutiva recientemente firmada por el Presidente Trump, llamada “La política de la Ciudad de México” que prohíbe dar a organizaciones gubernamentales internacionales el financiamiento si sus servicios incluyen el aborto, así los dólares americanos financien el aborto o no. Una legislación similar se ha lanzado para atacar a Paternidad Programada y Steinberg urge a los miembros de la comunidad a involucrarse para salir adelante. “Invito a todos a empezar a donar a su Paternidad Programada local con donaciones mensuales y voluntariado. on el indulto que otorgara el Presidente Obama a Óscar López Rivera, muchos miembros prominentes e la comunidad han expresado un sentimiento de alivio y alegría frente al anuncio de su clemencia. Tras haber servido 35 años de una condena de 70 por varios cargos – incluida la conspiración, cargo que es aplicado a personas que han sido acusadas de conspirar para derrocar el gobierno de los Estados Unidos, muchos han expresado su alegría por la liberación de Óscar López Rivera. “Estoy tan orgullosa de que tras 30 años de activismo y defensa de numerosos individuos y organizaciones, nuestro último preso político puertorriqueño será al fin libre. Pennsylvania 4 Puerto Rico, la Agenda Puertorriqueña Nacional y la Red Nacional de Derechos Humanos Boricua han acordado que la causa de Oscar representa un punto de cohesión importante en nuestra comunidad y orgullosamente nos hemos movilizado en apoyo a la clemencia en este caso”, dijo la Concejal María Quiñonez-Sánchez. Miembro de las Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional (FALN), Óscar López Rivera ha sido siempre percibido como un prisionero político por muchos en la comunidad. Aunque Rivera no estuvo conectado a ningún evento en

particular, las FALN como grupo estuvo directamente implicado en 100 atentados en Nueva York y en áreas circundantes en los años 70 y 80. A pesar de la oferta previa hecha por Bill Clinton de ofrecerle el indulto bajo circunstancias controladas que Rivera rechazó, su encarcelamiento ha sido siempre percibido por algunos no sólo como un símbolo de la postura de los Estados Unidos frente al estatus de Puerto Rico, sino también como una reacción frente a aquellos que desafíen las posiciones gubernamentales en asuntos que les importan. “Creo que hay muchas capas en esto. Está lo que representaba la misión y la visión de Oscar en términos de su búsqueda de la independencia de su país y la manera en la que participó y fue acusado por esos crímenes, encarcelado y así sucesivamente. Pero podríamos no estar de acuerdo con el hecho de que formara parte de las FALN, aunque él como individuo tiene el derecho de querer la independencia de su país”. Dijo Carmen Febo San Miguel, Directora Ejecutiva de Taller Puertorriqueño. Bajo la ley de indulto de Obama, la sentencia de López Rivera expirará el 17 de Mayo. Es uno de los 209 indultos que el entonces presidente anunció el pasado martes. “Es muy emotivo – 35 años sin haber sido hallado culpable de nada, así que ha sido muy bueno tener esta victoria y muy gentil de parte

de Obama el hacerlo. Y especialmente en estos tiempos donde hay tanto ajetreo en el ambiente político en los Estados Unidos y tanta división. Es realmente bueno ver algo positivo”, dijo Nilda Ruiz, Presidente y Director Ejecutivo de APM for Everyone. Pero de manera general, la liberación de Rivera simboliza una esperanza para el futuro y la unidad entre los puertorriqueños como un solo pueblo. “Él – más allá de los partidos políticos en Puerto Rico – tenía el apoyo del país para su liberación. Así que personas que estaban a favor del estado, pro independentistas, a favor del territorio autónomo, todos en la iglesia, Desmond Tutu, el Papa, ¿Qué más podrías necesitar?”, continuó San Miguel. Importantes líderes en las comunidades puertorriqueñas dentro de Filadelfia han expresado sus esperanzas de recibirlo en el futuro. “Este es un momento importantísimo para Óscar y para su Familia y para todos los Puertorriqueños, tanto en el continente como en la isla, que han abogado por la clemencia y la justicia. ara el filósofo mexicano José Vasconcelos, “ninguna raza vuelve; cada una plantea su misión, la cumple y se va”. Esta pareciera ser la manera más directa de abordar el asunto de la raza latinoamericana actual. Sí, “la raza,” la etnia multi-racial que hoy se extiende a lo largo y lo ancho de los Estados Unidos con más de 50 millones de personas clasificadas hoy como “Latinos” o “Hispanos”.

Y es que hemos estado en constante búsqueda de identidad desde que el primer barco europeo que se ancló en las costas de América; desde el momento exacto en el que se encontraron dos mundos. ¿Por qué siendo Latinoamericanos, nos cuesta tanto identificarnos como tales? ¿Por qué teniendo un territorio tan amplio, nuestras diferencias nos hacen tan ubicuos? Y es que hemos forjado nuestra imagen a través de las semejanzas y reflexiones frente a tantos otros que se aproximaron a nosotros sin que los estuviéramos buscando. Hoy por hoy, hay latinos negros, latinos blancos, latinos mestizos, trigueños, o con rasgos árabes, griegos e incluso asiáticos. Hemos sido la meca de la multiculturalidad y no hay manera de categorizarnos homogéneamente, pues nuestras raíces han mutado y no sólo se anclan en un pasado precolombino ni en una culturización producto de la dominación. Somos en verdad ahora un vasto tapiz de colores, rasgos e identidades. ¿Resulta tan inverosímil la posibilidad de que
exista un hombre con rasgos Afroamericanos pero que se exprese perfectamente en castellano y en inglés? ¿Una mujer morena, de anchas caderas, que ejerza como abogado en un país angloparlante pero que en su casa sus hijos respondan al más coloquial de los castellanos? Es ésta una de las múltiples realidades que viven los Latinos alrededor del mundo, pero en especial dentro del territorio estadounidense. No sólo hemos tenido que labrarnos un lugar dentro del compendio de minorías infravaloradas, sino que hemos tenido que luchar codo a codo en un laberinto de espejos para hacer entender a nuestros conciudadanos que somos mucho más que un estereotipo. En el mes en el que se celebra el mes de la herencia afroamericana, nosotros hemos venido a sumarnos a la causa, respondiendo una pregunta que pocos se han atrevido a hacer en voz alta: ¿Existe el latino afroamericano?
EL MITO DE LA NEGRITUD LATINOAMERICANA
Aquello que separa América y África es más
PORTADA que un océano; es una vía, un canal de tránsito, un espacio de movilizaciones demográficas, una ruta plagada de huellas, de historias, de recuerdos, de temores y abandonos. América y África se transformaron pronto en hermanas circunstanciales que durante 350 años adoptaron y perdieron hijos, para complementar el paisaje del que gozamos hoy en día. Mestizos, castizos, españoles, mulatos, moriscos, chinos, salto-atrás, lobo, jíbaros, albarazado, cambujo, sambiaga, calpamulato, tenteen-el-aire, no-te-entiendo y torna-atrás, fueron los primeros denominativos del producto de lo que comúnmente conocemos como mestizaje. Blanco, negro e indio, es la trinidad que evoca este término, y cualquier conocedor amateur de genética sabría que el producto de esa mescolanza es infinitamente variado, aún cuando existan rasgos más dominantes que otros. Pero al pasar los años, el fenotipo del latinoamericano se ha homogeneizado en la cultura popular, refiriéndose a nosotros como “Mexicanos” o “Españoles”, haciendo tabla rasa de la multiplicidad de rasgos que nos caracterizan. No es de sorprender que en las calles de Bar-
América y África se transformaron pronto en hermanas circunstanciales que durante 350 años adoptaron y perdieron hijos, para complementar el paisaje del que gozamos hoy en día. celona (España) se vendan sombreros de charro y que en algunas tiendas de souvenires en Latinoamérica encontremos castañuelas y vestidos de lunares colgados en una esquina. Hemos pasado el filtro de la globalización y hemos quedado compactados en tres o cuatro símbolos que menosprecian nuestra vasta identidad. Así pues, es frecuente que un hombre de piel negra y rasgos africanos, no califique como latinoamericano ante los ojos de, digamos, un norteamericano o un europeo del este, pues negro es africano y latino es mexicano, citando el más cruel de los reduccionismos. Aprovechemos entonces la víspera del mes de la historia Afro-Americana para hacer algunas aclaraciones históricas, en un ímpetu ingenuo por devolver la negritud latinoamericana al puesto en el escenario que se merece.
LA HISTORIA DEL ORIGEN
Fuimos esclavos, es cierto. No existe ningún compendio histórico que pueda obviar, negar o disimular un hecho de ese tamaño. No sólo fuimos esclavos africanos, encadenados y transportados en pesados barcos a través del océano Atlántico, sino también fuimos esclavos indios y fueron también esclavos nues-
tros descendientes. Pero es importante hacer un inciso y recordar que la esclavitud indígena fue menos agresiva en las colonias españolas debido a los desacuerdos que tuvieron la reina Isabel de Castilla y el Rey Carlos V con el sistema de encomiendas, y quienes permitieron la venida de cualquier “hombre libre” a la península, bajo mandato de jamás ser esclavizado. Si bien los dictámenes reales fueron bastante estrictos en papel, en la vida real siempre hubo vericuetos y escisiones que permitieron el maltrato y el abuso de la humanidad indígena. La esclavitud africana, por su parte, comenzó con la Ruta de los Portugueses en 1445 desde la isla mauritana de Arguin, donde Joao Fernández intercambiaría tejidos y trigos por hombres y oro. Asimismo, es frecuente considerar que la mano de obra esclava en los sembradíos es un asunto originario de América, pero la historia es otra: la siembra de la caña de azúcar con mano de obra esclava, por ejemplo, ya sucedía en 1425 en la isla de Madeira, donde Enrique “El Navegante” introdujo el rubro desde Sicilia. Fue gracias al Rey de Ndongo (África) que los portugueses pudieron hacerse con tal cantidad de hombres. El Rey no sólo permitía que el hombre blanco viniera y se llevara a sus hombres, sino que también permitió a su hija ser bautizada y transformada en doña Ana de Sousa, aunque más tarde se rebelaría y pelearía en Angola contra la invasión del extranjero. Entre las disputas por territorios marítimos, asaltos y tratados, la autonomía de la zona at-
lántica en materia de trata fue siempre moneda de intercambio entre Portugueses y Españoles. Para 1480, Huelva era ya núcleo de comercio de esclavos y, tras la Guerra de Sucesión Castellana y el tratado de Alcáçovas, Portugal sería, para finales del siglo XV, el mayor traficante de esclavizados de Europa gracias a la mediación de los árabes en África. Pero con el descubrimiento de América, los españoles debieron inmiscuirse mucho más en el negocio de la esclavitud, esta vez a través de las licencias (o permisos) de posesión de esclavos. El beneficio del esclavo africano era no sólo su fortaleza física, sino su inmunidad ante varias de las epidemias que azotaron a los indígenas en América. De hecho, fueron los frailes franciscanos y la Real Audiencia de Santo Domingo quienes solicitaron por primera vez el envío de esclavos negros para el trabajo en las plantaciones de México, Perú y Río de la Plata, durante la primera treintena del siglo XVI. Tras el éxito de la mano de obra esclava bajo la supervisión de los frailes y, posteriormente, la unión de España y Portugal bajo la misma corona, Felipe II de España lograría un nuevo método para sacar provecho de la importación de esclavos al Nuevo Mundo. Se trataba del sistema de “Asientos” o permisos a personas morales independientes de importar esclavos a las Américas, realizando un pago de cuota a la Corona. Se estima que durante el siglo XVII llegaron a América 268.204 esclavos, de los cuales 70.000 entraron por Veracruz, 135.000 por Cartagena ALDÍAnews.com / ENERO 25 - FEBRERO 1, 2017 / 9
PORTADA de indias, 44.000 por Buenos Aires y el resto por el Caribe y otras zonas. Lo que sucedía una vez llegaban a tierra firme, ha sido un terrorífico recuerdo que no se ha olvidado gracias a la tradición oral y a la literatura que ha hecho su mejor intento por inmortalizarlo. A partir de 1765, el Asiento de la Compañía Gaditana de Negros surtió durante 10 años a Cartagena, Portobello, Santo Domingo, La Habana, Santa Marta, Cumaná, Orinoco, Trinidad, Veracruz, Honduras y Campeche, de esclavos provenientes de Senegal, Cabo Verde y Gorea, que eran trasladados a Puerto Rico para ser distribuidos y, posteriormente en 1773, a La Habana.
LA LIBERTAD EN UN GRITO
Pero el hombre negro no fue tan sumiso siempre. Más de una rebelión se formó en las islas del Caribe, sobre todo en Haití donde un tercio de la isla fue dominada por una sublevación que obligó a los Franceses a reconsiderar su posición. Muchas plantaciones fueron quemadas y muchos gritos y cantos se escucharon a la media noche, pidiendo libertad. En la misma Florida, durante su dominación Española, se formaron los primeros núcleos sociales de hombres negros autoproclamados libres, protegidos por abolicionistas principiantes, quienes no pudieron salvaguardarles durante mucho tiempo. Muchos escapaban e intentaban organizarse lo más alejados posible de las urbes, en aldeas semi-fortificadas conocidas como palenques, cumbés o quilombos. Precisamente para evitar este tipo de organizaciones, el patrón blanco siempre procuró mezclar a sus esclavos entre etnias y sociedades originarias distintas, para mantener a raya las convivencias y la vuelta al ritualismo. No fue sino hasta 1805 que el abolicionismo comenzó a tomar auge, tan sólo como medida de Inglaterra para intentar obstruir el comercio del azúcar español. Fue entonces en 1864 que la Sociedad Abolicionista Española, creada por un puertorriqueño libre, empezaría a luchar por la libertad y la igualdad. La insurrección cubana que decantaría en la Guerra de los Diez Años en 1868, marcaría entonces el inicio del ocaso de la esclavitud en América. Un gran impulso para la abolición de la esclavitud fue la estrategia libertaria de hombres como Simón Bolívar y Miguel Hidalgo, quienes utilizaron la bandera de la libertad para sumar hombres a sus revoluciones. De una u otra manera, 350 años habían pasado, y ya el hombre Latinoamericano se había gestado en un entrecruzamiento paulatino entre el indígena, el hombre blanco y los esclavos que habían venido a suplantar al hombre precolombino casi extinto por la colonización y sus epidemias.
LA DIVERSIDAD COMO PRODUCTO

Hoy por hoy, hay latinos negros, blancos, mestizos, trigueños, con rasgos árabes, griegos y asiáticos. Hemos sido la meca de la multiculturalidad y no hay manera de categorizarnos homogéneamente, pues nuestras raíces han mutado y no sólo se anclan en un pasado precolombino ni en una culturización producto de la dominación. Somos ahora un vasto tapiz de colores, rasgos e identidades. mestizaje. Si se estima que 14 millones de esclavos africanos llegaron a América y fueron “depositados” inhumanamente en centros de distribución en Puerto Rico y Cuba, eso nos permite mirar con nuevos ojos la belleza del color en la piel del Latino Caribeño, y no adjudicárselo tan sólo al inclemente sol. Espaldas anchas, amplias sonrisas y ritmos inolvidables, han sido parte de la herencia de tantos años de sufrimiento. Hoy por hoy, nuestras sociedades latinoamericanas poseen una gran variedad de rasgos; desde el blanco, el trigueño, el mulato, el mestizo hasta las etnias supervivientes de la catástrofe colonialista, como los patagones en Argentina, los aimaras en Bolivia, los tapirapes en Brasil, los mapuches en Chile, yukpas en Colombia, guaimíes en Costa Rica, quechuas en Ecuador, cacaoperas en el Salvador, quichés en Guatemala, peches en Honduras, chichimecas en México, chorotegas en Nicaragua, brisbris en Panamá, chamacocos en Paraguay, tiahuanacos en Perú, bohanes en Uruguay y los yanomamis en Venezuela.
PERO EL DAÑO ESTABA HECHO. Durante 350 años el indígena y el negro – y concretamente cualquiera que no fuese el blanco europeo – habían dependido de su conquistador para subsistir. Una vez asimilada la libertad, no todos tuvieron el norte claro. Más de un hombre esclavizado durante años y generaciones, no supo qué hacer con tanta libertad. Años de retraso impuesto por la cadena, de escaso o ningún desarrollo de labores que pudieran abrirle las puertas al mundo libre y en una sociedad donde tener la piel de color era un estigma irremisible, no sólo le aislaron, sino le hicieron su espacio por derecho propio en el mundo, cada vez más inalcanzable.
UN “HOY” QUE SE PARECE MÁS AL “AYER” Fue tan difícil el proceso de adecuación, de reencuentro consigo mismo y con una identidad originaria que se había perdido en algún lugar del Atlántico, que el hombre nuevo americano olvidó por completo que en el África sus hermanos siguieron siendo esclavos durante mucho tiempo más. Habrá que recordar a Aimé Césaire y la terminología que en 1935 diseñó en un ímpetu de reivindicar al hombre negro como igual, y que a partir de entonces se conocerá como Negritud. En Latinoamérica la división de clases heredada de los mantuanos se mantuvo durante muchísimo tiempo, incluso perdura hoy en las esquinas más disimuladas de la globalización. La relación directa entre el color de la piel y su marginalidad en el esquema social ha sido un escollo difícil de superar, aún cuando intelectuales, figuras públicas, artistas e incluso presidentes de la República hayan demostrado
PORTADA lo contrario. Y es que esta ha sido una realidad simultánea. Basta con tan sólo leer a Isabel Allende y a Toni Morrison para entender que el idioma no es precisamente lo que nos separa. Desde el blues del Mississippi hasta el son cubano, desde el merengue dominicano hasta los tambores de Aragua en Venezuela; desde el calipso guayanés hasta la samba brasilera; no existe un espacio en nuestro continente en el que no hierva aún la sangre africana. Entonces, ¿existe la negritud latinoamericana? Está de más decir orgullosamente que sí. Han pasado 560 años desde los inicios de la esclavitud y la aculturación de los hombres obligados a trabajar forzosamente a un océano de distancia de sus hogares. Y sin embargo 350 años de denigración parecieran pesar todavía más, pues el Movimiento de los Derechos Civiles en los Estados Unidos y la Resistencia Indígena Mapuche en el Sur de Chile son sólo los extremos de un largo compendio de Revoluciones que hoy en día, están más vigentes que nunca. n

TOMAN INICIATIVA DE ACERCAR A FILADELFIA CON CUBA
Un grupo de once jóvenes de Filadelfia viajó a Cuba recientemente con el fin de jugar a béisbol con cubanos de su edad y poder conocer mejor la realidad de la isla. CONCHA ALBORG Especial para AL DÍA

no de los logros de la presidencia de Obama –por modesto que sea, comparado con otros más significativos – ha sido abrir Cuba a la organización de viajes culturales y de beneficencia por parte de grupos privados. Aprovechando la ocasión, once jóvenes de trece y catorce años de Filadelfia viajaron a nuestra vecina isla cubana durante las vacaciones de Navidad para jugar a béisbol. La mayoría de los chicos eran residentes de Lower Merion, en las afueras de Filadelfia, aunque entre ellos también había un joven de California. Viajaron acompañados por sus padres y su entrenador, Jon Rubin, formando un grupo de veintiocho personas que viajaba por primera vez a Cuba.
CAMISETAS, BATES Y SONRISAS
El viaje fue concebido por Alan Tauber, un abogado de Filadelfia, y su esposa, la rabino Andrea Weiss. Para cubrir los gastos, los padres organizaron eventos y recaudaron más de $5,000, lo que permitió que dos participantes fueron becados. Tres organizaciones diferentes - los Phillies, MLB International y Nike and Pitch in For Baseball- donaron todo tipo de artículos deportivos, incluyendo bates, pelotas, guantes y las populares camisetas de los Phillies. Desde el primer momento, tuvieron claro que el objetivo del viaje no era solo organizar partidos con otros chicos cubanos -grandes amantes del béisbol- sino hacer beneficencia y forjar amistades, aprendiendo de la cultura de los otros y compartiendo intereses en común. La mayoría de los participantes estudian español en la escuela, aunque no se conocían entre ellos ni habían jugado juntos con anterioridad. Durante los preparativos del viaje, el “Team Philly” realizó ocho entrenos para conocerse mejor y tener ocasión de jugar juntos como equipo.
FAMILIAS LIBERALES Y DE GRAN CORAZÓN
Gracias a mi anterior experiencia organizando un viaje a Cuba mien-
tras era profesora en la Universidad de Saint Joseph´s, sé que la gente que participa en este tipo de viajes es muy selecta. Las familias que están dispuestas a que sus hijos vayan a un país conflictivo durante sus vacaciones generalmente son gente liberal y de gran corazón. Esto cobra sentido especialmente ahora, ya que los americanos podrían perder la oportunidad de entrar en Cuba bajo la nueva administración Trump. Por otro lado, el grupo de Filadelfia tuvo la suerte de no viajar a finales de noviembre, cuando Fidel Castro acababa de morir y la isla comunista estuvo de luto durante diez días.
HABLAN MUY DEPRISA
Poco antes de iniciar el viaje, Jake Rasmussen, uno de los miembros del equipo, dijo que estaba muy ilusionado, pero no que sabía lo que le esperaba. Por lo general, él juega de tercera base y es un gran bateador, aunque también iba a compartir el papel de
lanzador con otros compañeros del equipo. Incluso mientras tenía lugar esta entrevista, él volteaba el bate, siempre practicando. Jake había visto con sus padres el documental Cuba, Island of Baseball, en la cadena MLB. El resto del equipo había visto otro documental, Havana Curveball, presentado en el Festival de Cine Judío el otoño pasado. El documental cuenta la historia de Mica, un joven de trece años que se va a Cuba, una experiencia bastante similar a la que estaba a punto de tener el equipo de Filadelfia. El show televisivo Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown llenó algunas de sus otras lagunas culturales. Jake, por ejemplo, sabía que los cubanos a menudo hablan muy deprisa, pero a él no le preocupaba porque ya había estado en Puerto Rico y en México y sabía que su madre, que le acompañaba en el viaje y sabe español, sería una intérprete ideal.
CULTURA El viaje a Cuba fue un reto en sí, empezando por tener que volar a la isla vía Miami con poco tiempo de conexión entre vuelos, con veintiocho personas y más de treinta bultos de equipaje. Cuando el grupo aterrizó en Santa Clara, en el norte de la isla, inmediatamente se encontraron con problemas en la aduana a causa de las donaciones y los artículos deportivos. De poco les sirvió la carta que llevaban con ellos, anticipando precisamente una situación así. Resulta que los americanos pueden traer regalos pero no donaciones, como se decía en la carta. Era tan tarde para cuando les dejaron salir del aeropuerto que se saltaron Santa Clara y se fueron directamente a Cienfuegos, donde jugarían su primer partido. Cienfuegos tiene uno de los mejores centros de entrenamiento de béisbol de Cuba, a pesar de que a nuestros amigos americanos les pareció algo rudimentario por su falta de tecnología. En Cuba se juega al béisbol todo el año y “sus jugadores son buenos fildeando, pero nosotros somos buenos bateadores” dijo Jake, con confianza.
DIPLOMACIA PERFECTA
El Team Philly estaba dispuesto al reto. Sus camisetas en rojo, blanco y azul, estampadas con las banderas de los Estados Unidos y Cuba, también tenían el monograma “JF-16” en honor a José Fernández, el famoso jugador cubano que falleció en septiembre. El equipo americano jugó un total de cuatro partidos; ganaron dos y perdieron dos, diplomacia perfecta. Jake bateó cinco de once; Zack, otro jugador, consiguió un jonrón, extraordinaria jugada por parte del Team Philly. “Además de los partidos”, dice Jake, “compartir una comida con el equipo que acabábamos de conocer fue uno de mis momentos favoritos del viaje”. Fueron a un restaurante en la provincia de Matanzas y de alguna forma pudieron compartir historias. Generalmente el grupo comía en los tradicionales “paladares”, casas privadas donde se sirve comida. Algo a lo que tuvieron que acostumbrarse fue a tener que esperar mucho tiempo para que llegase la comida y a pasarse dos horas en el almuerzo. La comida rápida es un concepto que todavía no ha llegado a Cuba. La mayoría de las comidas consistieron de un menú típicamente caribeño: arroz con frijoles y pollo, cerdo o gambas (que traducido al inglés se convertía en “shrimps,” en plural, lo cual les hacía reír a todos). Uno de los momentos más memorables del viaje fue la visita al primer embajador americano en Cuba en más de cincuenta años, Jeffrey De Laurentis.

Foto: Concha Alborg El grupo tuvo la oportunidad de ver donde se hospedó el Presidente Obama durante su histórico viaje en 2016 y lo bellas que eran las casas en La Habana antes de la revolución. La mayoría de estas casas fueron expropiadas y convertidas en edificios oficiales por el gobierno comunista. La madre de Jake pudo hablar en privado con el embajador y su esposa y se dio cuenta de lo incierto que su futuro es ahora. No parece imposible que el nuevo Presidente Trump cierre la embajada, terminando así la frágil relación diplomática que se ha establecido entre los Estados Unidos y Cuba en los últimos años.
EN EL AUTOBÚS DEL TIEMPO
A Jane le afectó en particular la visita a una comunidad rural en Jovellanos, donde se reunieron con familias que tienen hijos con discapacidades. Los padres del grupo llegaron en carretas para distribuir las medicinas y material escolar. Al ver a estos niños, que tienen tan pocos bienes materiales, pero que están tan bien cuidados, fue el momento de dar las gracias a los adultos. En cualquier viaje hay cosas que no salen como uno esperaba. Originalmente el grupo iba a hospedarse en hoteles, pero cuando el itinerario final llegó, el hospedaje había cambiado a casas particulares. Esta situación ofreció la oportunidad de conocer a las familias y ver cómo viven los cubanos día a día. Pero el tener que llevar a cada uno a su casa fue impráctico. El transporte en Cuba es complicado. El grupo tuvo suerte de tener su propio autobús para moverse de ciudad en ciudad, pero ir por carretera cuatro o cinco horas no fue tan fácil algunos días. A causa de los problemas con el transporte y todo el tiempo que pasaron en el autobús, no hubo prácti-
camente ocasión para hacer turismo como les hubiera gustado. Lo que perdieron como turistas lo ganaron en experiencias culturales. Por ejemplo, las charlas amistosas en el autobús con los guías que sueñan en visitar sus nuevos amigos en los Estados Unidos. Algunos de ellos ya se han puesto en contacto con miembros del grupo por correo electrónico. Sí hubo tiempo para dar un paseo por La Habana vieja, aunque tanto los chicos como los mayores se quedaron más impresionados por los viejos modelos de autos clásicos americanos – que los cubanos consiguen hacer funcionar- que por la belleza de la arquitectura de los antiguos edificios. Unos de los aspectos más difíciles del viaje fue estar sin conexión a Internet durante toda la semana. Uno puede imaginarse lo que habrá sido mantener entretenidos a once chicos sin poder mirar sus teléfonos móviles. Lo que sí hicieron fue pasarse un balón de fútbol americano, escuchar música y cantar a voz en grito, como hacen los jóvenes por definición.
INTERCAMBIO DE EMAILS
Para Jake la parte más emocional del viaje se dio después del último partido, cuando los jugadores americanos regalaron a sus compañeros cubanos el equipamiento deportivo. Literalmente se quitaron las camisetas que llevaban puestas. Jake compartió su bate, el jersey y la gorra con Nelsito. Un momento especialmente tierno fue cuando Nelsito llamó a un amigo suyo para darle el guante de batear de Jake “porque lo necesitaba más que él.” No había ningún jugador con la talla 12 de los zapatos deportivos que usa Jake, así que un padre los aceptó. Después de un viaje como éste, es importante saber cómo la experiencia ha afectado las vidas de los compañeros
de equipo. Jake dice que está agradecido por haber tenido esta oportunidad, cuánto aprecia ahora todo lo que sus padres le compran sin problemas y toda la tecnología que tiene a mano cada día. Tiene planes para aprender más español; él sabe como agradar a sus padres. Por lo menos por un tiempo, estos jóvenes no van a dar por sentado la comodidad de sus hogares y los modelos de carros que conducen sus padres. El último día del viaje los chicos pudieron parar brevemente en Caleta Buena, en el camino de vuelta de La Habana a Santa Clara. Los momentos que pudieron pasar nadando y buceando libremente, después de un trabajo tan bien hecho, fue uno de sus favoritos. Salir de la isla fue tan ajetreado como el llegar. “A las cinco de la tarde todavía estábamos en el autobús rumbo al aeropuerto cuando nuestro vuelo era a las seis”, explica Jane Day Rasmussen.

La situación política entre los Estados Unidos y Cuba continúa siendo inestable. Precisamente la semana pasada, el Presidente Obama revocó la política de inmigración “pie mojado, pie seco” que permitía a los cubanos que pisaban suelo americano hacerse ciudadanos de Estados Unidos. La revocación de esta ley significa que los cubanos serán tratados como cualquier otro inmigrante que entre en este país, algo que el gobierno de Cuba deseaba hace años. Por otro lado, a pesar de su histórico viaje a Cuba el pasado marzo, la promesa que hizo Obama en su campaña electoral de cerrar Guantánamo y terminar el embargo no se ha realizado. Ahora está por ver qué sucederá con el nuevo presidente, pero todavía es más impredecible y menos prometedor. Chris se enamora perdidamente de Dick, con quien cree haber tenido “sexo conceptual” durante la cena, pero en lugar de guardárselo en secreto, se lo cuenta a su marido. “Como [el matrimonio] hace mucho tiempo que ha dejado de tener sexo, los dos mantienen viva su intimidad a través de la deconstrucción: es decir, contándoselo todo” , escribe el narrador en off que cuenta la historia durante la primera parte del libro. A lo largo de esta primera parte, el lector se convierte en el espectador del juego de correspondencia que se establece entre Chris, Sylvère y Dick. En lugar de enfadarse o ponerse celosos, el matrimonio decide empezar a escribir cartas a Dick por separado, confesándole su amor, sus sentimientos y reflexiones, en lo que acaba convirtiéndose una especie de proyecto artístico colaborativo: una “performance” conceptual, como las que ambos vivieron durante su juventud en el Nueva York de los 70. “Sylvère, un intelectual europeo que da clases sobre Proust, es experto en análisis de las minucias del amor. Pero cuanto tiempo se puede estar analizando una sola noche y una llamada de tres minutos?”, escribe el narrador. Esta competición absurda entre intelectuales pedantes se manifiesta en las continuas alusiones de Chris - una videoartista frustrada, como se define ella misma- a Sophie Calle y otros artistas conocidos de su época de juventud, como si tuviera que fardar de sus conocimientos artísticos ante Dick y su esposo. Las cartas del matrimonio no tienen respuesta de Dick, y no les importa. El objetivo al final es la publicación de dichas cartas, quizás hacer una película.
A Chris le gustaría superar su frustración profesional, su complejo de inferioridad al lado de Sylvère, un filósofo más destacado que ella; le gustaría decir las cosas que piensa de verdad. “Como artista, Dick le parece exageradamente naif, aunque a ella le gustan ciertas formas de arte malo, arte que ofrece transparencia en la forma de las esperanzas y deseos de la persona que lo ha hecho. El arte malo hace que el espectador sea mucho más activo”, nos dice el narrador de Chris, que en realidad es la voz de la autora (y se llama igual). En la segunda parte del libro, lo que empieza siendo un juego artístico se acaba convirtiendo en una realidad, y el matrimonio acabará divorciándose. “¿Puede un matrimonio colaborar en en un billet doux (cartas de amor)? Si Sylvère y Chris no se hubieran opuesto tan firmemente al psicoanálisis, se hubieran dado cuenta de que estaban en un punto de inflexión”, advierte el narrador antes de dar paso a esta segunda parte del libro, en la que Chris toma la voz en primera persona. “¿Se habría enamorado Chris de ti si yo no hubiera estado presente para hacerlo tan vergonzoso? ¿Es el conocimiento una forma desesperada de aceptación? ¿O la aceptación trasciende en ella misma para lograr un estadio más interesante?”, le escribe Sylvère a Dick, insistiendo en hacer reflexiones exclusivamente en el plano intelectual. Cuando Kraus toma finalmente la voz, el libro da un giro feminista y las emociones surgen. Kraus se da cuenta de que nunca será tomada en serio como intelectual mientas siga siendo considerada “una extensión” de Sylvère, así que decide abandonarlo. A la vez, Chris dejará de acosar a Dick por carta como si se tratase de un proyecto de arte, y empieza a escribirle sobre sus sentimientos de verdad. Kraus se vuelve menos analítica para dar rienda suelta a las emociones y recuerdos, aunque la línea entre lo artístico y lo personal seguirá siento un tanto borrosa hasta la última página.n

octurnal Animals es, digamos, o buscar ser, una película enigmática y perturbadora, sin más. El objetivo está claro : se trata de hacer cine para inquietar, desconcertar, intrigar. Así que no se anda con rodeos, y quizá ese es su gran mérito. Su director, Tom Ford, sabe lo que quiere y va directamente por ello. Desde los créditos de inicio. De repente estamos frente a imágenes de mujeres obesas,
bailando desnudas, sin música y en cámara lenta, a lo largo de toda la extensión de la pantalla. Hay pompones, sombreros, bastones, el número completo de animadoras deportivas, sonrisas excesivas y movimientos de coreografía, pero lo que vemos son cuerpos incomprensibles, deformes, mutilados. Pronto nos damos cuentas que hacen parte de una exhibición de arte organizada por Susan (Amy Adams), una exitosa galerista, por lo demás esbelta, hermosa y sofisticada. Quizá en el contraste entre Susan y las voluminosas animadoras encontramos la pista para descifrar esta secuen-

LA LEY DE Alivio ante la Ia inmigración Ilegal del Municipio de Riverside, aprobada en el ayuntamiento de New Jersey en Julio, intentó prohibir a los inmigrantes indocumentados el alquiler, la residencia el uso de la propiedad o ser empleados en Riverside. La ordenanza fue planteada para detener cualquier acción que se percibiera como “ayuda o colaboración” con inmigrantes indocumentados, y buscaba imponer multas de hasta $1000 dólares a propietarios que les arrendaran cualquier espacio. Manuel Yanez, arriba a la derecha, le dijo a AL DÍA que ya ha sido testigo de muestras de odio racial de parte de aquellos que apoyan la medida. A la izquierda, la imagen de una Latina asiendo la bandera norteamericana contra su pecho durante una protesta contra la ordenanza de Riverside, es un recuerdo agridulce de que los inmigrantes y ciudadanos parecidos atesoran la vida en los Estados Unidos. Una ley fue introducida para rescindir la ordenanza en Agosto, y para el mes de Septiembre ya h abía sido anulada.
