n una activa batalla entre el Senador de los Estados Unidos, Pat Toomey, su equipo y un grupo de al menos 500 personas que se reúnen semanalmente frente a su oficina, pareciera que el final se aproxima. El 1ero de Marzo, la nueva oficina de Pat Toomey se ubicará en la Custom House (200 Chestnut St.) a tan sólo 17 cuadras de su ubicación actual. Aunque algunos han especulado que la movida podría haberse debido al reciente repunte de las aglomeraciones de los “Martes con Toomey”, una declaración del senador dice que el alquiler de su antiguo espacio está a punto de vencer y que esa sería la única razón de la mudanza. Pero los participantes de “Martes con Toomey” han declarado que no dejarán que el Senador escape a sus demandas por un diálogo. “El Senador Toomey va para su séptimo año como senador y nunca ha llevado a cabo una Asamblea en Filadelfia. De hecho no ha llevado ningún tipo de Asamblea desde el 2013. Nos preocupa que no escuche a la mayoría de sus ciudadanos”, dijo Paige Wolf, Co-Fundadora de “Martes con Toomey”. Un movimiento que ha sido ampliamente aplaudido por su fuerza y por su éxito masivo, “Martes con Toomey” creció desde un pequeño grupo de 7 mujeres en el lobby del edificio hasta un grupo escoltado por la policía que se enfrentó a puertas cerradas PAT TOOMEY y llamadas telefónicas sin respuesta. Y con la nueva ubicación, “Martes con Toomey” espera que ahora logren tener mayor acceso al Senador. Y aunque se han encontrado con puertas cerradas, mensajes de voz sin respuesta y una asamblea telefónica que se organizó en pocas horas y fue anunciada dos horas antes, la respuesta que se repite es la del desinterés. “Creo que el punto en sí es obtener su atención – incluso si sabemos que ya la tenemos, aún no obtenemos respuesta”, dijo Julie Viera, una representante del Fondo para la Acción Futura de Pennsylvania, un grupo que trabaja en conjunto con los “Martes con Toomey”. Pero con otro día de protestas llevándose a cabo en Filadelfia, la ciudad demuestra cada vez más lo que pareciera ser un escenario común: franjas de personas gritando consignas
a edificios gubernamentales lejos de ellos. “Cuando dijo que no sería una mera formalidad en la agenda de Trump, estábamos esperando que mostrara más independencia y que hiciera algunas declaraciones”, dijo Wolf. Y si bien no han recibido respuestas hasta el momento, algunos ven una oportunidad durante el próximo receso. “Sé que durante el receso del congreso habrán un par de eventos en los que Toomey podría agendar una reunión con sus ciudadanos, en su propio terreno”, fijo Viera. Pero Paige Wolf, una de las directoras de “Martes con Toomey” declaró que el grupo no dará marcha atrás y que cambiará hasta que el senador tenga un diálogo abierto con sus ciudadanos tanto en Pittsburg como en Filadelfia. FILADELFIA CANDIDATOS A FISCAL DE DISTRITO EN FILADELFIA RICHARD NEGRIN Conocido por su posición en favor de “CeaseFire PA” y por su trabajo como director administrativo de la ciudad, Richard Negrin no teme reducir el crimen en la ciudad. Resaltando su época en la junta ética y su trabajo previo con la ciudad, Negrin se pinta a sí mismo como el candidato ideal, especialmente con su experiencia personal con la violencia con armas de fuego. Negrin es el único Latino compitiendo por esta posición en esta elección.

Joseph Khan, quien declaró que adjudicaría más fondos a la lucha contra la violencia sexual, doméstica y al tráfico humano a la Filadelfia Magazine, es también otro candidato en el ticket democrático. Ha trabajado en la Oficinal del Fiscal de los Estados Unidos.
JUEZA TERESA CARR DENI Una jueza y abogado con experiencia, la Jueza Teresa Carr Deni, no desconoce el sistema judicial. Y debido a ello, su campaña no es ajena al escándalo. Intentando superar las represalias por su sentencia en un caso del 2007 sobre la violación de una prostituta, Deni debe demostrar que no se verá afectada por sus sesgos implícitos.

a atestada carrera por la oficina del Fiscal de Distrito de Filadelfia se ha covertido una de las elecciones más anticipadas para las primarias de este mes de Mayo. Con siete candidatos, es impresionante cómo la competencia se volvió tan atestada, tan rápido. La oficina de fiscal más grande del estado, la posición de Fiscal de Distrito de Filadelfia, es deseada por abogados en todo el área. Pero tras la emoción y la decepción que rodeó la elección de Seth Williams, y luego a su caída en picada, podríamos pensar que sólo los más valientes se lanzarían. Abogados y jueces con carreras similares y con un historial de compromiso comunitario hicieron fila para proponerse como candidatos a Fiscal de Distrito de la ciudad, por la gloria, por el título y por algo que la ciudad conoció recientemente: los beneficios. Como demostró el período de Seth Williams como Fiscal de Distrito, este trabajo no viene sin privilegios externos. La última elección vio a Seth Williams enfrentarse a Daniel Álvarez, quien se postuló como republicano en

el 2013, un anuncio que se encontró con gran apoyo, mientras Williams declaró que daba la bienvenida a los “competidores sinceros y competentes al título”. “En cualquier campaña, el titular debe defender su trayectoria en la oficina, mientras el rol del retador es el de convencer a los votantes de que pueden obtener algo mejor”, dejo en aquella oportunidad Williams, citado por el Philadelphia Inquirer. La elección previa a aquella contra Álvarez se llevó a cabo en el 2009 con 6 candidatos postulados tras el puesto de Lynne Abrams, incluyendo a Seth Williams y al actual candidato democráta, Michael Untermeyer. Una vez que la Fiscal de Distrito Lynne M. Abraham se retirara del puesto, dejó a la ciudad en una competición que no se había visto desde 1985: una sin un titular en la boleta. Y esta elección, de nuevo sin un titular aferrado al puesto, tiene de nuevo a abogados de toda la ciudad en búsqueda de reemplazar a su predecesor sancionadocon la multa ética más grande en la historia de la ciudad. El primero al bate es Richard Negrin. n
La única candidata republicana anunciada durante las primarias, ha declarado que quiere enfocarse en aquellos que buscan el cambio- Con más de dos décadas en la oficina del Fiscal de Distrito, y una temporada como fiscal de la ciudad, Grossman tiene una gran familiaridad con el puesto.
TARIQ EL-SHABAZZ Mientras Jude Deni ha admitido que la emoción por un Fiscal de Distrito Afroamericano podría haber llevado a Seth Williams a ganar las elecciones en el 2009, el ímpetu por su reemplazo no se ha perdido entre sus votantes. Shabazz fue seleccionado para trabajar bajo el mando de Williams pero, y al igual que su jefe, podría tener su propio escándalo con sus deudas fiscales.
LARRY KRASNER Larry Krasner ha sido apoyado por su trabajo como abogado defensor de grupos como Occupy Philly, ACT-UP y Black Lives Matter. Con tal trasfondo político combinado con su carrera como abogado, Krasner tiene el apoyo de la extrema izquierda que muchos votantes potenciales, y políticamente activos en Filadelfia, han estado buscando.
MICHAEL UNTERMEYER Habiendo sido previamente el único candidato republicano en la elección del 2009, Michael Untermeyer se ha postulado como lobo estepario en estas elecciones. Sus perspectivas parecieran no haber cambiado. Su extenso trabajo con la Oficina del Fiscal de Distrito de Filadelfia y sus 11 años en la Oficina del Fiscal General de Pennsylvania, hace similar la experiencia del forastero a la de sus contrincantes.

¿Qué diferencia al TTIP del acuerdo entre Canadá y Europa? Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea han paralizado las negociaciones de su acuerdo de comercio mientras Europa aprueba el suyo con Canadá ESPERANZA ESCRIBANO Especial para AL DÍA

ntre las decenas de espinas que se le quedaron clavadas al expresidente Barack Obama -y de las que se le volverán a clavar- una de ellas es el TTIP, el Tratado Transatlántico de Comercio e Inversiones entre Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea. Muchos han sido sus adversarios y detractores, hasta el punto de que el CETA, el mismo acuerdo pero entre Canadá y la UE, ha sido aprobado con muchas menos lanzas en contra, ¿por qué? ¿qué tiene Canadá que no tenga EEUU? Depende de a quien se le pregunte. Aunque estos tratados son muy criticados, sobre el papel se podría decir que “sólo” buscan crear preferencias arancelarias entre los países que los firman y por tanto, la reducción de las barreras comerciales en unos sectores concretos. La idea es que aumenten así las transacciones, eliminando burocracias y cargas económicas. Pero al igual que el presidente Donald Trump se pregunta -a hora intempestivas- si es mejor un dólar fuerte o débil, muchos interesados se preguntan también si aumentar las exportaciones e importaciones acabará beneficiando al país o creará situaciones en las que los productos europeos arrasen mercados americanos. La principal diferencia entre el acuerdo de Europa con Canadá o con Estados Unidos es que las negociaciones del segundo se han llevado a cabo en un profundo secretismo. Aunque el TTIP parezca paralizado mientras Trump esté en la Casa Blanca, el CETA también influirá en Estados Unidos. Más de 40.000 multinacionales tienen filiales en Canadá y podrán demandar a gobiernos europeos cuando se pongan en marcha los ISDS. A pesar de ser distintos, los dos acuerdos tienen objetivos similares y la gran diferencia se encuentra en el ámbito geoeconómico, porque la economía canadiense no tiene el mismo peso a nivel internacional que la de Estados Unidos. En el desarrollo de CETA se podrá prever buena parte del contenido del TTIP. No hay que olvidar que desde el 2013 han tenido lugar 14 rondas de negociación, aunque no se haya hecho público lo convenido. Sólo las ataduras a nivel de regulación que supondría aprobar el acuerdo, que conllevará que la UE opine sobre las leyes americanas y viceversa, podría podrá convertirse en un verdadero freno en el futuro. Los liberales estadounidenses podrían encontrar en los ecologistas europeos a su mejor aliado. n

n 1908, cuando 15.000 mujeres marcharon en la ciudad de Nueva York para demandar menos horas de trabajo, mejor paga y el derecho a votar, nadie estaba preparado para calificarlo como movimiento. Pero un año después, el 28 de Febrero de 1909, el día Nacional de la Mujer se celebró por primera vez en los Estados Unidos. Cruzando el océano, durante la conferencia Internacional de Mujeres Trabajadoras de 1910 en Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin fue la primera en proponer que cada año y en cada país debería haber un día donde las mujeres lucharan por su progreso. Tras la decisión de 1911, el Día Internacional de la Mujer fue celebrado por primera vez en Austria, Dinamarca, Alemania y Suiza el 19 de Marzo. Las Naciones Unidas celebraron el Día Internacional de la Mujer en 1975 y tan sólo seis años después, el Congreso aprobó una ley que permitiría proclamar la semana del 7 de Marzo de 1982 como la “Semana de la Historia de la Mujer” y fue tan sólo en marzo de 1987 cuando fue oficialmente declarado como el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer. Y si bien hay mucho que celebrar a nivel nacional e internacional, frecuentemente quienes son obviadas son las Latinas que contribuyeron a estos movimientos. Sufragistas, manifestantes, voceras y líderes – desde Ana Roqué Géigel de Duprey y Luisa Capetillo a finales del siglo XIX hasta Mariposa Fernández y Mónica Carrillo en la actualidad – las mujeres han debido luchar por su lugar en la sociedad como individuos iguales, frente a una sociedad masculina represiva y una femenina acomodada. A finales de los años ochenta, las mujeres se dieron cuenta de las desigualdades laborales una vez que decidieron incursionar en campos como la ingeniería, la academia o la política. La batalla feminista era entonces más necesaria que nunca y la oposición no parecía querer dar marcha atrás. La represión doméstica y la humillación pública estaban a la orden del día, y pelear por tus derechos era una condena inmediata al cuestionamiento de tu orientación sexual. Con las representaciones culturales, la organización comunitaria y una amplia transformación del significado de la figura femenina, el nuevo siglo parecía ser una era distinta para la igualdad de género y la democracia. Pero algo cambió en los últimos años, y lo que parecía ser una victoria ganada, regresó como un monstruo de tres cabezas. Una nueva Administración en los Estados Unidos, dirigida por la misoginia y no poca demagogia, urge la evocación de lo que se ha hecho hecho y lo que se ha logrado. La verdad, el respeto y la democracia son términos que van de la mano con una campaña nacional para salvaguardar lo que costó tantos años en lograr. Con acaloradas protestas alrededor de la ciudad, podemos ver con seguridad a activistas femeninas surgir en la vanguardia de los movimientos sociales a nivel nacional. A través de su tenacidad, las mujeres han sido capaces de sobrepasar sus luchas personales y pelear por la justicia y el avance de todos. Bien sean escritoras, organizadoras o líderes de sindicatos, las mujeres que hemos decidido resaltar han dedicado sus vidas y su trabajo al crecimiento de los demás. Desde los 1800 hasta el presente, estas guerreras latinas son pioneras que marcan la pauta durante el Mes de la Mujer.

Nacida en Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Ana Roque Duprey fue educadora, escritora, editora y una activista feminista. Fundó “La Mujer”, la primera revista dedicada a las mujeres en Puerto Rico, y otras publicaciones como La Evolución y Álbum Puertorriqueño. Además de una carrera periodística impresionante, Duprey fue autora tanto de ficción como de narrativa tradicional y su trabajo más notable fue la Flora Puertorriqueña. En 1917 fundó la Liga Feminista Puertorriqueña, la primera organización en Filadelfia dedicada a los derechos de la mujer. Y para 1932 la primera fase de los derechos al sufragio de mujeres fue implementada en Puerto Rico.
Luisa Capetillo no siguió el camino tradicional que las mujeres en su época seguían. Con dos hijos fuera del matrimonio y trabajando en una fábrica de cigarrillos, Capetillo debió vivir fuera de las normas de su género. Conocida por utilizar pantalones en público e incluso habiendo sido detenida por dicho “crimen”, continuó retando al status quo durante todo su trabajo y su búsqueda de identidad. Tras adoptar su posición como lectora de novelas y asistir a varios eventos con trabajadores del tabaco, los ensayos y columnas de Capetillo figuraron en periódicos laborales y sindicales en todo Puerto Rico. Más adelante en su vida, viajó por todo el país educando y organizando a las mujeres y a los sindicatos laborales.
Hija de un activista Social y Profesor de Español en la Georgetown University, Elizabeth “Betita” Martínez tenía un trasfondo muy fuerte. Tras graduarse del Swathmore College, Martínez comenzó su trabajo para las Naciones Unidas como traductora y más tarde ascendió a una posición administrativa. Su activismo comenzó cuando se sumó al Comité de Coordinación Estudiantil No-Violento antes de involucrarse profundamente en el movimiento Chicano. Una vez allí, fundo El Grito del Norte, un periódico mensual que circulaba por todo Nuevo México y por las áreas circundantes. Posteriormente creó su trabajo más conocido: “500 años de Historia Chicana en imágenes”.

ROCÍO SÁENZ
MARÍA “MARIPOSA” FERNÁNDEZ
Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa (Valle del Río Grande, 1942) fue una académica chicana, activista política, feminista, escritora y poeta, formada en literatura comparada en la Universidad de Texas (Austin). Anzaldúa contribuyó con la definición del feminismo y con la investigación en teoría cultural con asuntos como la identidad Chicana y la teoría queer. Su trabajo fundamental fue la introducción de la mezcla a través de lo que llamó la “nueva mestiza”, definido como el estado de estar “más allá”, dentro de su trabajo “La Conciencia de la Mestiza: Towards a New Consciousness”. Anzaldúa utilizaba tanto el inglés como el español como una herramienta para representar la mixtura de la identidad Chicana.
Tras mudarse desde México a Los Ángeles, Sáenz comenzó trabajando en múltiples labores por muy bajo sueldo. Esto le permitió tener la experiencia de primera mano sobre las necesidades de los trabajadores y en 1988 se transformó en organizadora de la Justicia para los Conserjes del SEIU. Sáenz se mudó posteriormente a Boston donde expandió el programa de Justicia para los Conserjes y dirigió a los conserjes en Boston a una huelga de un mes que logró el apoyo de varios líderes en la comunidad. La huelga culminó con la victoria en uno de los acuerdos salariales más grandes vistos en Boston. En el 2013 Sáenz fue elegida como Vicepresidente Ejecutivo de SEIU Internacional, siendo la primera Latina en ostentar el cargo.
Nacida en el Bronx en 1971, Fernández es una poeta, dramaturga y activista por los derechos humanos en una tercera generación de Puertorriqueños. Inspirada en Ntozake Change, Gwendolyn Brooks, Sandra María Esteves y Julia de Burgos, el trabajo de Fernández se desplaza entre el español y el inglés, explorando temas como la familia, la identidad, el empoderamiento y la experiencia afro-latina en los Estados Unidos. Cuenta con publicaciones como “Born Bronxeña: Poems on Identity, Love & Survival” y ha colaborado en publicaciones colectivas como “The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature” y “The Afro Latin@ Reader: History and Culture in the United States”. Su trabajo es tema de conferencias y estudios en instituciones académicas en los Estados Unidos, Puerto Rico y Europa.

Inspirados, conmovidos y cautivados por Latinas DOLORES HUERTA
SILVIA MÉNDEZ
Siendo galardonada múltiples veces por su servicio comunitario y su defensa a los trabajadores, inmigrantes y mujeres, Dolores Huerta es una activista altamente respetada. Ha recibido de todo, desde el Premio a los Derechos Humanos Eleanor Roosevelt hasta la Medalla Presidencial por la Libertad. Su trabajo más notable fue con César Chávez en la Asociación de Trabajadores de las Granjas Nacionales y el Comité Organizador de las Granjas Unidas de los Trabajadores. Siendo un miembro de grupo con experiencia, trabajó para lograr aprobar una ley que permitiría a los residentes de California presentar el examen del permiso de conducir en español. Como directora de la Fundación Dolores Huerta, continúa su trabajo y su servicio a la comunidad.
Méndez es una Mexicano-Puertorriqueña que ha dedicado su vida al activismo por los Derechos Civiles Americanos, como el caso de de-segregación de 1946 Mendez contra Westminster. Su padre y la esposa de éste fueron líderes comunitarios contra la segregación en la educación pública, introduciendo una demanda en una corte federal de Los Ángeles en 1945 contra cuatro distritos escolares en el Condado de Orange, en representación de 5.000 jóvenes estudiantes hispano-americanos. El 18 de Febrero de 1946, la corte falló a favor de la contraparte hispana, adelantando la de-segregación de todas las escuelas públicas en California. Felicitas Méndez mantuvo el legado de su padre al viajar y educar, y hacer pública la contribución histórica de sus padres.

MÓNICA CARRILLO ZEGARRA
Nacida y criada en Colón, Panamá, Modestin ha trabajado como escritora, poeta y activista, enfocándose en arrojar luz en la experiencia de ser Afro-descendiente en Latinoamérica. Es la fundadora y directora ejecutiva de Encuentro Diáspora Afro en Boston, MA, y es la coordinadora de la Red de Mujeres Afrolatinoamericanas, Afrocaribeñas y de la Diáspora. Su rol ha sido fundamental en la conjunción de las comunidades latina y afroamericana a través de su liderazgo y su trabajo en la literatura. Obras como “Mujeres Guerreras de la Diáspora Afro Latina” y sus colaboraciones en publicaciones colectivas como “Rapsodia Antillana” y “Antología de Poesía Colonense”, son testimonios de su dedicación y su arduo trabajo en la campaña contra el racismo.
Mónica Carrillo nació en Lima en 1984 y es una periodista peruana, poeta, cantante y activista que ha dedicado su carrera al empoderamiento de la comunidad afrodescendiente en Perú. Educada en Comunicación Social en la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Carrillo se tituló en Derecho Internacional en la Universidad de Oxford y actualmente es la directora de LUNDU (Centro de Estudios y Promoción Afro-Peruana) en Lima, una organización que trabaja por el reconocimiento de la comunidad en Perú y lucha contra la discriminación y el racismo.

n comparación con las generaciones anteriores, las Latinas de hoy en día tienden a ser más educadas, empoderadas, independientes y se sienten más cómodas sintiéndose en el centro de las decisiones de la vida. En ninguna parte esto es más evidente que en el lugar de trabajo, donde las Latinas están logrando avances extraordinarios. Según la Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales de Estados Unidos, la participación de las Latinas en la fuerza de trabajo casi se duplicó en los últimos 20 años. Y para el año 2022, se proyecta que las Latinas representen el 17,3 por ciento de la mano de obra femenina y el 8,1 por ciento de la fuerza de trabajo en total. Observando los números más de cerca, las Latinas han aumentado su representación entre un 30 y 40 por ciento en las profesiones de enseñanza, derecho, medicina y administración durante la última década. A pesar de los notables progresos conseguidos hasta ahora, las Latinas siguen estando infrarrepresentadas en todas las profesiones e industrias, y apenas están presentes en los niveles de CEO, miembros de juntas de grandes empresas o en posiciones gubernamentales. A lo largo de los últimos años, numerosas Latinas han conseguido tener éxito en sus campos profesionales, provocando un cambio social importante de una manera u otra. En AL DIA queremos rendir homenaje a las Latinas de la región de Filadelfia por representar a su cultura y su patrimonio y destacarlo en todo lo que hacen, y por haber logrado un gran reconocimiento gracias a sus esfuerzos por allanado el camino hacia un mundo más igualitario. Aunque hay todavía muchas Latinas cuyos esfuerzos por cambiar el mundo siguen siendo anónimos, también hay muchas que han logrado conseguir ser el centro de atención. Y de todas las que fueron nombradas para concursar en los premios “Women at the Top” (“Mujeres en la Cima”), sólo elegimos seis. Somos conscientes de que hay miles de Latinas trabajando duro todos los días para que las mujeres puedan disfrutar de un mejor entorno en el ámbito de la política, las artes, las empresas, la literatura, el mundo de la moda, el entretenimiento y hasta en el espacio. Y esperamos que su ejemplo inspire a miles de mujeres más a educarse y crecer personal y profesionalmente. En esta edición de AL DIA, presentamos dos de las Latinas que nos inspiraron, nos conmovieron y nos cautivaron por su trabajo - Raquel Arredondo de la Universidad Drexel y Alicia Kerber del Consulado de México. Luego proseguí los estudios en relaciones internacionales y eventualmente ser en la Cónsul de México. ¿Cuál es la parte más satisfactoria de tu trabajo? Es el ser capaz de ayudar a mujeres y representar a aquellas que no tienen voz. Es muy importante para mí ayudar y proteger a las mujeres inmigrantes que están trabajando por sus familias. Es por esta razón que he creado una ventana que se enfoca específicamente en las mujeres inmigrantes y sus necesidades. ¿Cuál era tu trabajo de ensueño cuando eras niña? ¿Por qué? Cuando era joven, la primera mujer que me inspiró por casualidad fue Frida Khalo. No sabía quién era pero fui a una exhibición y vi sus pinturas. Y era una manera muy apasionada de pintar, y debido a ello aprendí sobre ella y creo que muchas niñas de mi generación descubrieron quién era ella en READ IN aquella época. Ahora me doy cuenta ENGLISH de que ella fue un verdadero ejemplo para nuestra generación. Era poderoNEWS.com/OPINION sa, excepcional y siempre decía lo que pensaba. ¿Cómo te han formado las mujeres en tu vida? La mujer más importante en mi vida fue mi madre. Tenía un carácter muy fuerte y siempre me dijo que persiguiera mis sueños, aún cuando ella no estaba muy convencida del feminismo y todo eso, pero me impulsó a ser quien quisiera ser. ¿Quiénes fueron tus mentores? Cuando comencé la carrera, me di cuenta de que dos de mis mentores eran dos profesores extraordinarios. Uno fue el Dr. Jorge Capiso. Era un excelente abogado. Uno de los abogados más importantes en México en derecho constitu-

cional. Desafortunadamente falleció. Y el otro fue el Dr. Héctor Cuadre, quien me hizo entender que mi deseo por saber siempre un poco más sobre el mundo podía ser canalizado a través del derecho internacional. ¿Qué significa para ti ser Latina en tu área? ¿Sueles sentirte como la única mujer o Latina en la sala? Es muy importante porque todos te están observando. Cuando estás negociando, por ejemplo, para la organización de los Estados Americanos, las mujeres necesitan tener una voz muy fuerte en las negociaciones porque no es fácil que se te reconozca en las negociaciones y también, cuando negocias como parte de una embajada donde la mayoría de las personas son hombres. Frecuentemente negocias en una posición de desventaja, así que es muy importante para mí trabajar con otras mujeres sin importar dónde esté, para que nuestras posiciones sean escuchadas. ¿Qué consejo profesional le darías a las jóvenes? Hay muchas barreras, es cierto, pero más que eso es un techo de cristal que debemos romper. Existen muchas personas con la mente muy cerrada, y deberás hacer caer todas esas murallas. Porque ellos aún creen que las mujeres somos tan sólo ornamentos o figuras decorativas que pueden traer a reuniones para convencer a las personas. Y queremos que nuestras voces se escuchen: no somos sólo ornamentos. Por eso debemos trabajar unidas como mujeres para ayudar a nuestras compañeras y a la próxima generación a fortalecer sus posiciones. ¿Cuál crees que es la barrera más significativa para el liderazgo femenino? Creo que es el creer en sí mismas. Perseguir sus sueños. Confiar en sus valores y en sus raíces, en el caso de las Latinas. Deben sentirse orgullosas de sus raíces, y siempre trabajar con el compromiso con la transparencia y la responsabilidad. Creo que es allí donde las mujeres podemos hacer el cambio. ¿Qué se puede hacer para aumentar el número de latinas en esta industria? Creo que necesitamos afianzarnos en nuestras posiciones. Siempre di lo que piensas. Nunca hieras los sentimientos de la gente pero al mismo tiempo, ayuda a las mujeres que vienen tras de ti. Necesitamos ser mentores de las mujeres que trabajan con nosotros o en otras organizaciones. Necesitamos ayudarnos las unas a las otras para poder ver que las próximas generaciones realmente alcancen esa calidad que queremos para el futuro. ¿Algún talento secreto o pasatiempo? ¿Trabajo comunitario? Me encanta restaurar antigüedades, muebles. Me gusta ir a los mercados de pulgas y restaurar cualquier tipo de mueble. Tengo muchos muebles viejos en mi casa y mi esposo no quiere más. Los fines de semana eso es lo que hago. También trabajo con el Centro Cultural Mexicano, es una organización civil que promueve la cultura mexicana aquí en Pennsylvania. Me ha permitido trabajar con la comunidad para educar y empoderar la Cultura Mexicana como una de las culturas más antiguas del hemisferio. ¿Qué canción te inspira realmente ahora? Hay una canción que siempre me ha gustado de Chavela Vargas, se llama “Macorina”. ■

Cuéntenos más sobre su carrera actual. ¿Cómo ha llegado hasta aquí? i trayectoria profesional se ha movido entre el mundo académico y el corporativo, aunque no puedo decir que justo después de graduarme ya supiera que quería hacer esto [...] Creo que empecé a querer lo que estoy haciendo ahora como resultado de no saber, y de ir buscando mi propio camino. Al salir de la universidad, acepté un trabajo en Penn Univ que me encantaba. Era en el departamento de Relaciones con los Estudiantes, me sentía en casa. Luego empecé a volverme un poco más ambiciosa, así que decidí intentar buscar trabajo en el mundo corporativo. Me quedé en casa durante unos cinco años, hasta que recibí una llamada de un compañero de Rutgers University, que se acordaba de mi - siempre mantuve los contactos en mi región- y me preguntó si tenía ganas de salir de mi retiro, y así, la posibilidad cayó en mis manos [...] Años después, en una fiesta,me ofrecieron mi actual puesto en Penn. ¿Qué parte de su trabajo considera más gratificante? Soy muy de pensar blanco o negro. Así que siempre estoy intentando buscar una solución o interpretar un rol. En mi posición, a veces me encuentro con un estudiante que no recibe ninguna petición de entrevista y le señalo en su curriculum dónde está el problema. La oportunidad está en conseguir que algo pase, de que alguien haga algo que quizás no se había planteado. ¿Cuál era el trabajo de sus sueños de pequeña, y por qué? De pequeña soñaba con tener un salón de belleza. Mi madre era esteticista en Manhattan, así que cuando yo era más joven me plantée serlo yo también. Mi madre tenía una clientela muy glamourosa… Pero decidió terminar con su carrera cuando nos mudamos de Nueva York. No puedo decir que tuviera una carrera específica en mente. ¿Qué mujer la inspira actualmente y por qué? Siempre me he sentido atraída por las mujeres que no encaja-
ban con el sistema. Mujeres que se revelaban. Mujeres que luchaban. Me resulta difícil pensar en alguna en concreto, pero estos rasgos me inspiran. ¿De qué forma han marcado las mujeres su vida? No podría decir que me ha marcado una sola mujer. He recibido inspiración de muchas mujeres. ¿Quiénes han sido sus mentores? Gran parte de mi motivación proviene de mi padre. Una persona que estaba siempre fuera, trabajando, y que tuvo éxito. Llegó de Cuba con 18 años y tuvo que abrirse camino él mismo. Aprendí de sus sacrificios, y de ver cómo logró tener éxito a nivel profesional. Ahora, y durante todos estos años, me ha ido influenciando una mezcla de mujeres muy diversas,a las que admiro y espero que dejen huella en mi. ¿Qué significa ser Latina en su sector? ¿Cómo se siente por ser habitualmente la única mujer, o la única Latina, en la sala? Durante gran parte de mi carrera me ha tocado ser la única Latina en la sala. Sin embargo, nunca le he dado demasiada importancia [...]. Siempre me aseguro de introducir algún elemento de mi cultura a la conversación. Alguien va a saber en el algún momento de que soy Cubana. Lo hago en broma, pero en realidad forma parte de quién soy. ¿Qué consejo profesional daría a las mujeres más jóvenes? Una de las cosas contra las que más he luchado ha sido contra esta tendencia a definir lo que es el camino correcto, la manera correcta […] No fue hasta hace cinco o diez años que comprendí que no hay un camino correcto. Así que muchas conversaciones que tengo con mujeres jóvenes y también con hombres, me llevan a decirles que entiendan su propio mundo. Que no intenten definir lo que deberían estar haciendo [...] Sino que escuchen a sus corazones, escuchen lo que resuena en su interior. ¿Cuál cree que es la barrera más grande para el liderazgo femenino? Como género, y como cultura, debemos empezar por decir en alto lo que pensamos. Necesitamos hacer presión para tener nuestro sitio en la mesa. Debemos cuestionarnos por qué algunas cosas no pasan. ¿Qué puede hacerse para incrementar el número de Latinas en su industria? Creo que cuantas más oportunidades se presenten, cuántos más Latinos en general terminen la universidad, continúen con los estudios superiores y se incorporen al mundo laboral, más Latinos veremos ocupando altos cargos y puestos de trabajo. ¿Algun talento o hobby secreto? ¿El trabajo comunitario? Mucha gente no sabe que también soy profesora titulada de yoga. Llevo cinco años enseñando yoga. También fue parte de mi epifanía para lograr ser más abierta y centrada. ¿Qué canción la anima y empodera en estos momentos? Mi hijo pequeño, Ryan, me dijo que escuchara “Catch My Breath”, de Kelly Clarkson. Me dijo: “Mamá, creo que eres tu. genes ilusorias hechas a base de hologramas, así como diferentes registros de audio y video, fotografías y cuadros de los archivos del Taller Puertorriqueño, Pérez-Méndez consigue destacar la particular personalidad polifacética de Puerto Rico. Entre los temas que aborda la exposición están el paisaje natural y las costumbres agrícolas de Puerto Rico, las tradiciones culturales Taíno y su compleja relación con los Estados

Unidos. Imágenes, sonido y video irradian por todos los rincones de la sala, sumergiendo al visitante en la identidad puertorriqueña.
COSECHAS, FANTASMAS Y DANZAS RITUALES
Una parte de la exposición está dedicada a la herencia natural y agrícola de la isla. En Cortando Caña (2015), una mujer cansada de trabajar va cortando y compilando cañas de azúcar, mientras Finca del Guaraguao (2017), refleja un holograma de la artista caminando entre el exuberante paisaje retratado en la obra de Francisco Oller Paisaje de la Finca del Guaraguao (1884). La Zafra (2017) presenta un holograma de campos de cultivo en llamas durante los preparativos de la cosecha, en un marco de plantas y naturaleza diversa. En el centro de la sala se exhiben representaciones de la cultura artística de la isla. El video Taíno (2016), muestra a un grupo bailando una danza ritual tradicional Taíno en el centro de un neumático invertido. En una pared cercana se proyecta Vejigante (2016), un video en el que aparece bailando el mítico embaucador Vejigante, conocido gracias al Carnaval y al festival de San Jaime de la ciudad de Loisa. El rasgo principal de la obra de Pérez-Méndez, y quizás el más interesante, es el uso que la artista hace de la técnica llamada “el fantasma de Pepper” (Pepper’s Ghost) para recrear imágenes parecidas a hologramas a partir de objetos físicos. El método se hizo famoso en los años 1800 gracias al científico John Henry Pepper. En aquella época se utilizaba para crear
CULTURA espejismos, “fantasmas”, en obras de teatro y parques temáticos. Tal y cómo lo describe Pérez-Méndez en su website, “para crear estos fantasmas, se coloca un espejo de cristal de dos caras en un ángulo de 45 grados. La pantalla sirve tanto de espejo como de medio reflector, produciendo simultáneamente realidad e ilusión.” Según el folleto informativo de la exposición, en la obra de Pérez-Méndez, “el fantasma de Pepper” sirve para “fusionar lo contemporáneo con lo tradicional, reflejando la caprichosa naturaleza de la identidad.”
FUSIONARSE CON EL CUADRO
Por ejemplo, en Baquiné (2017), un holograma de la artista parece unirse en el duelo de los personajes que aparecen en el cuadro de Francisco Oller El Velatorio (1893). Asentada entre la muchedumbre, la artista parece estar cantando junto a ellos dentro del cuadro. El audio de fondo ayuda a que la escena cobre vida El efecto audiovisual creado por estas ilusiones es muy potente. Mediante el uso del “fantasma de Pepper”, la artista contemporánea conecta de manera sólida su yo actual con el pasado, interactuando con los personajes originales, como si estuviera con ellos. Este efecto se percibe muy bien en Finca del Guaraguao (2017), donde la vemos proyectada dentro del cuadro de Francisco Oller Paisaje de la Finca del Guaraguao (1884), en un plano inferior a un hombre representado de pie junto a una granja. La proyección de la artista se va acercando hacia él, como si se hubiera encontrado con un amigo. De esta forma, el pasado se une sin problemas al presente, a la vez que destaca la dénil naturaleza de la identidad. Como Pérez-Méndez señala en su definición como artista: “Extravagante, efímera y divertida por naturaleza, esta construcción de la visión es tenue, ya que la ilusión se desmorona rápidamente si el espectador camina a ambos lados, revelando la mecánica simple de la obra. A pesar de todo, este mundo en miniatura persiste. El espectador es testigo de una situación en la que no se alcanza ni se estabiliza ninguna resolución, de un lugar donde el Sueño Americano de la naturalización se queda por cumplir.” Sólo si la construcción está intacta se puede expresar la identidad.
“FIESTA ISLAND”
No obstante, la exposición es notable no sólo por el uso de esta técnica, sino también por resaltar la gran variedad de identidades, a veces conflictivas, asociadas a Puerto Rico. Quizás donde mejor se refleja este aspecto de su obra es en la pared exterior de la exposición, en la que se proyecta la imagen estereotipada de Puerto Rico en un video turístico de la isla hecho en América, en contraste con imágenes de la migración puertorriqueña en los Estados Unidos. En la primera pieza, titulada Ay, ay, ay, ay Puerto Rico! (2016), el video turístico clasifica a Puerto Rico de “Fiesta Island” y lleva al espectador a realizar un tour por las principales ciudades de la isla. Mientras las excelentes imágenes seleccionadas van pasando, un narrador describe el país como un resort exuberante y maravilloso,
con hermosas montañas y playas, frutas exóticas y sabrosas, arquitectura tradicional española y un ambiente distintivamente americano. A la izquierda de este video, la imagen gloriosa y estereotipada de la isla contrasta fuertemente con las escenas de la migración puertorriqueña en Estados Unidos que se proyectan en Crucero (2016). Primero aparecen imágenes de un gran grupo de inmigrantes embarcando en un barco rumbo a Nueva York. Le siguen fotos de escenas realistas de la vida puertorriqueña tanto en los EE.UU como en la isla. Un grupo de mujeres posa delante de la cámara delante de la iglesia de La Milagrosa, en Filadelfia. Una foto del mural del antiguo muro del Taller Puertorriqueño muestra a un grupo de puertorriqueños vendiendo productos en los stands de las calles de Filadelfia. Está claro que Pérez-Méndez ha pensado cuidadosamente cada obra, seleccionando y creando piezas que atribuyen profundidad y dinamismo a la identidad puertorriqueña. La visita a la exposición, planteada irónicamente como un paralelo al gran tour del video turístico, lleva al visitante a un recorrido por diferentes construcciones de la identidad puertorriqueña, logrando que la experiencia sea un conjunto vibrante y bien construido.
HOMENAJE ENCUBIERTO
La exposición es también un homenaje al propio museo, tal y como se refleja en el título: Quien a buen árbol se arrima, buena sombra lo cobija, es decir, aquellos que obtienen más beneficios de la vida son “aquellos que se asocian con algo más grande que ellos mismos.” El título es también una referencia directa al Taller Puertorriqueño en el que se aloja la exposición. Fundado en 1974 por un grupo de puertorriqueños y latinos en el norte de Filadelfia, el Ta-

ller Puertorriqueño se ha esforzado durante más de 40 años en proporcionar una educación cultural a la juventud local, así como en el desarrollo de la comunidad latina a través de las artes. De acuerdo con la información publicada en su página web, “en su evolución, Taller ha pasado de ser un centro cívico para las artes gráficas de Puerto Rico a ser una respetada institución que celebra las artes de Puerto Rico, América Latina y el Caribe. Proporcionar un lugar de encuentro para los niños y jóvenes del vecindario al salir de la escuela, ofreciendo actividades extraescolares y una programación rica en disciplina artística y cultural, sigue siendo central para llevar a cabo la misión de la organización y el trabajo en curso.” En línea con esta misión, la organización inauguró el pasado otoño un nuevo edificio para albergar su centro cultural, donde se emplaza actualmente la exposición de Pérez-Méndez. El edificio es el mayor centro puertorriqueño / latino en la región del Atlántico Medio e incluye un jardín de esculturas al aire libre, aulas electrónicas, una gran galería de exposiciones, así como estudios de danza y teatro. Visto en este contexto, la reflexión de Pérez-Méndez sobre la caprichosa naturaleza de la identidad puertorriqueña es también un homenaje al propio centro, honrando su misión -histórica y actual- de servir a la comunidad local y llamar a un futuro apasionante. e pequeña, Miriam Ramírez nunca llegó a preguntarse qué rayos quería hacer con su vida. “Siempre supe que mi vocación era comunicar, me gustaba informar,” admite por teléfono esta conocida ex reportera de televisión portorriqueña, que acaba de publicar un manual para orientar a los jóvenes lati-

nos a elegir su profesión. “La intención de este libro es lograr que nadie se quede cruzado de brazos esperando a descubrir su vocación. Hay que conocerse a sí mismo, indagar… A veces los padres insisten en que tomes unos estudios o trabajos determinados, pero si no hay pasión detrás, nunca se llega lejos”, explica Ramírez en una entrevista te-
lefónica con AL DIA NEWS. Criada en Cabo Rojo, un pueblo rural al sur de la capital, Miriam empezó su carrera periodística como locutora de radio en una emisora de música local, a pesar de que en su familia todos se dedicaban a la agricultura. “Mi padre era camionero, pero yo tenía claro que quería ir a San Juan a estudiar periodismo”, recuerda.
Su motivación y empeño le permitieron convertirse en una reconocida reportera televisiva, hasta que en el año 2010, su vida dio un giro: su esposo, el fotoperiodista Jesús Fernando Quiñonez, perdió la vida al ser disparado por miembros de una banda criminal mientras sobrevolaba en su helicóptero una barriada marginal de San Juan. “Mi marido y yo trabajamos mucho juntos. Él era camarógrafo y yo periodista”, recuerda la reportera. El asesinato de su marido, con quien tuvo una hija, la obligó a replantearse por primera vez qué quería hacer con su vida. Sentía que necesitaba un cambio. Finalmente, Ramírez decidió abandonar el periodismo y tomar las riendas de la finca que ella y su esposo habían adquirido en 2004 con el fin de transformarla algún día en un negocio de agricultura sostenible. “Quiero ayudar a los jóvenes a salir del estancamiento. Cualquier persona puede encontrar su verdadera vocación. Así no pierdes el tiempo en cosas que no te gustan. Porque nuestro tiempo es limitado”, añade la periodista, reconvertida en empresaria agrícola. En la actualidad, Miriam se dedica a la gestión de Los Sueños Farm, donde comercializa
heno, principalmente pajón y pangola, huevos orgánicos y limones. En sus ratos libres, se dedica a escribir. Qué rayos quiero hacer con mi vida es su primer libro, y también una especie de legado que la periodista ha querido dejar tanto a sus hijos como a sus lectores. “En la vida hay que saber reinventarse”, dice Ramírez, que se declara feliz de que su vida y la de sus dos hijos transcurra ahora entre campos de cultivo y gallinas que corretean libres y comen sano. Sus huevos orgánicos, insiste, nada tienen que ver con los huevos procesados importados de Estados Unidos. “Hay que educar a la gente para que consuma producto local, menos contaminado que el que nos llega de Estados Unidos. Es difícil competir con sus precios. Cuatro docenas de huevos americanos en el supermercado cuestan $5 mientras que mis “huevos felices” pueden costar casi $3 la unidad,” se lamenta. Dedicarse a la agricultura sostenible es solo una alternativa profesional más dentro del abanico de profesiones que la periodista plantea en su libro. La guía contiene 43 opciones de profesiones u oficios y en cada una de ellas se explican los requisitos, el día a día, los sacrificios de la profesión y
CULTURA los sacrificios de la profesión y los beneficios. “Procuré redactarlo de forma sencilla y amena, para que el mensaje llegue a todo el mundo”, explica la autora. A la hora de redactar el libro, Ramírez ha tenido en cuenta que los jóvenes puertorriqueños se enfrentan desde hace unos años a una situación económica difícil, lo que les obliga a emigrar fuera para desarrollar su carrera académica y profesional, principalmente a los Estados Unidos. “En general, la situación es complicada en todo el mundo”, dice. “Pero sea en el país que sea, lo importante es conocerse bien a sí mismo. Todo es una cuestión de actitud: confiar en uno mismo y pensar en positivo, indagar en lo que quieres ser en el futuro”. Y cuando Miriam habla de mantener una actitud positiva, sabe de lo que está hablando. Han sido su motivación y perseverancia las que le han

Mala calidad de aire aumenta riesgo de diabetes en niños hispanos EFE

a mala calidad del aire podría aumentar el riesgo de diabetes en niños hispanos, reveló un informe publicado por la Universidad del Sur de California (USC). El artículo “Polución del aire ligada a un aumento del riesgo de diabetes tipo 2 en niños obesos latinos”, publicado en la edición del 7 de febrero de la revista especializada ScienceDaily, mostró una preocupante relación entre la polución del aire y el incremento de riesgo de diabetes tipo 2 en niños latinos.
Según datos de los Centros de Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC), cerca de 8,1 millones de personas en Estados Unidos tienen diabetes, pero no han sido diagnosticadas, lo que aumenta el riesgo de otras afecciones como embolias, daños renales y Alzheimer. Los investigadores de USC hicieron seguimiento durante tres años y medio a los índices de polución del aire y la salud de los niños en los vecindarios afectados, encontrando una propensión mayor a este tipo de diabetes en los menores hispanos. Tanya Alderete, investigadora líder del estudio y académica de la Escuela de Medicina Kerc de USC, señaló que algunos cambios en los hábitos diarios pueden beneficiar a los hispanos. La investigadora destacó que “el aire de Los Ángeles es contaminado en muchas áreas”, por eso recomendó tratar de controlar algunos factores de la vida diaria para evitar la exposición de los menores. Así, por ejemplo las horas de la mañana no
son las mejores para hacer ejercicio al aire libre en áreas de mayor contaminación, como por ejemplo cerca de las autopistas o de las fábricas. El análisis encontró que la exposición al aire contaminado puede disminuir la producción de células beta especialmente en el páncreas, “que producen insulina y mantienen el apropiado nivel de azúcar en la corriente sanguínea”. Según destacó Alderete, el reporte evaluó los datos de 314 niños latinos obesos o en sobrepeso que tenían entre 8 y 15 años de edad cuando comenzó la investigación, y que no presentaban síntomas de diabetes tipo 2 al inicio del proceso. Al confrontar los datos, los autores del informe encontraron que una vez cumplidos los 18 años, los jóvenes tenían un 27 % más de insulina en la sangre luego de un ayuno de 12 horas. Igualmente, luego de un test especializado de glucosa tenían 36 % más insulina de lo normal indicando que su cuerpo presentaba una respuesta menor a la insulina, un factor de riesgo para desarrollar diabetes tipo 2. La ley regulaba desde la emisión de pasaportes de seis meses no renovables a sujetos extranjeros, a la pérdida de ciudadanía de aquellas mujeres americanas que se casaran con sujetos extranjeros, o de los niños nacidos en el extranjero que querían optar a la ciudadanía tras la naturalización de sus padres en territorio de los Estados Unidos.

Las nuevas políticas migratorias obligaban a los mexicanos que cruzaban la frontera a someterse a duchas desinfectantes y a ser vacunados. Carmelita Torres se negó a pasar por dicho proceso, rechazó el dinero que se le adjudicaba para financiarse el billete de transporte, y convenció a otros viajeros a unirse a su causa. Tres días después, las revueltas aminoraron, aunque los procesos de desinfección continuaron llevándose a cabo 40 años más.
