sta es una pregunta que ha surgido en medio de la crisis de desalojo de Filadelfia, circunstancia que muchos consideran como sencillamente una prolongación de la crisis hipotecaria que afectó previamente la ciudad. Cada año, miles de ciudadanos enfrentan el desalojo de sus viviendas. Teniendo que soportar desde pozos de lodo en sus sótanos hasta copos de nieve en los suelos de sus habitaciones, los más pobres de la ciudad están sufriendo terribles condiciones de vida y aún intentan sobrellevar la inminente amenaza de perder las casas improvisadas con las que cuentan. Aunque esto pueda parecer la típica historia de propietarios con mala pinta intentando aprovecharse de comunidades empobrecidas, lo cierto es que muchas veces los mismos propietarios comparten el nivel de ingresos de sus inquilinos, y frecuentemente viven en los mismos barrios. El expresidente de México Vicente Fox participará el próximo 4 de abril en el panel Latin America’s Role in 2017 and Beyond, en el marco de la serie de discusiones Global Stability and Insecurity, organizadas por el World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, una organización independiente y sin ánimo de lucro dedicada al estudio de temas de importancia nacional e internacional. Últimamente muy visible por sus fuertes declaraciones en torno al proyecto de construcción de un muro en la frontera mexicoestadounidense, la presencia de Fox en Filadelfia promete controversia, sobre todo porque brindará una conferencia sobre el presente y futuro de las relaciones binacionales entre México y Estados Unidos en tiempos de Trump. El expresidente también participará en un panel de expertos en temas de seguridad y política, en el que discutirá sobre los retos y oportunidades que países como Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina y Brasil enfrentan dadas las actuales situaciones de orden público, corrupción, crisis económicas y procesos de paz que tienen lugar en sus territorios. ada vez que en Filadelfia se llevan a cabo unas elecciones, la misma pregunta sale a flote: ¿Qué pasa con el voto latino?, ¿por qué los llamados líderes hispanos parecen incapaces de unirse y movilizar a una comunidad que representa casi el 12 por ciento de la población? Esas preguntas volvieron a quedar sin respuesta la semana pasada en el Distrito 197, en North Philly, por cuenta de la jornada extraordinaria para elegir a la persona que reemplazará a Leslie Acosta, la exrepresentante estatal demócrata que tuvo que abandonar su curul en medio de un escándalo por malversación de fondos. Y quedaron sin respuesta porque las elecciones extraordinarias del Distrito 197 fueron todo menos un gran ejemplo de participación ciudadana y fiesta democrática. Ni siquiera el candidato ganador, el demócrata Emilio Vázquez -curtido en este tipo de lides electorales-, logró que la gente acudiera masivamente el pasado martes a los puestos de votación: de 64.000 residentes habilitados para votar, menos de 3.000 acudieron a la cita democrática: eso es casi el 6 por ciento del censo electoral de ese sector. ¿Por qué la asistencia a unas elecciones tan importantes para los habitantes de North Philly no logró convocar a su comunidad? Varios electores consultados por AL DÍA News el mismo día de la elección expresaron que la mayoría de la gente desconocía que se estaba llevando a cabo la jornada, otros le atribuyeron a la pobre participación ciudadana al hecho de que las elecciones extraordinarias se celebraron en medio de la semana laboral, ¨mucha gente aparecerá después de las 5:00¨, dijeron. Sin embargo, eran las 6:30 p.m. y los puestos de votación estaban más solos que la candidata republicana, Lucinda Little, en el tarjetón.
MUCHA BULLA PARA UNA ELECCIÓN DESCAFEINADA
Pese a la ausencia del 94 por ciento de los electores, la semana pasada, antes de que se conociera quién sería el reemplazo de Acosta en la Cámara Estatal de Representantes, las candidatas Lucinda Little (republicana) y Cheri Honkala (Pardio Verde) denunciaron presuntos actos de coerción del voto y fraude electoral.

Y aunque llama la atención de que en unas elecciones tan pequeñas se puedan presentar este tipo de trampas, la Oficina de los Comisionados de Filadelfia hizo eco de algunas denuncias, mientras que el Fiscal Distrital de Filadelfia dispuso una ¨fuerza de tarea especial¨ para investigar los hechos reportados por miembros de las campañas perdedoras. Más allá de las presuntas ligerezas que se pudieron dar en una jornada en la que hubo más ojos puestos sobre las urnas que votos depositados en ellas, lo que las elecciones extraordinarias del Distrito 197 consiguieron fue sumarle una anécdota más al relicario político de los líderes hispanos del norte de la ciudad. La historia de los dos últimos representantes estatales por ese distrito, Leslies Acosta y J.P. Mirandas -ambos demócratas, ambos latinos, y ambos tristemente célebres por ser confesos responsables de hechos de corrupción-; es el último capítulo de la larga historia sobre por qué a los hispanos de North Philly les cuesta tanto capitalizar la fuerza electoral de una comunidad tan importante en todos los aspectos. Nombres como Ángel Cruz, Ben Ramos, Carlos Matos, Fred Ramírez, Danilo Burgos, Tomás Sánchez, Nelson Díaz, María Quiñonez-Sánchez y la paradójica suerte de LUPE (Latinos United for Political Empowerment), se han visto envueltos en una larga trama de alianzas y desencuentros, de peleas irreconciliables que dejan entrever una especie de canibalismo político que al final ha imposibilitado
la conformación de una fuerza compacta, coherente y decisiva que influya con determinación en la política de Filadelfia y Pensilvania. Por eso, más allá de los resultados del Distrito 197, más allá de que el Partido Demócrata haya logrado conservar una silla en una Cámara de Representantes dominada por los republicanos, y más allá del papel que pueda desarrollar en Harrisburg el representante electo Emilio Vázquez, el tema que subyace siempre es si los hispanos tienen o no la voluntad de pensarse como una fuerza política con vocación de poder y capaz de incidir en el presente y futuro de la región. Esto con miras a las elecciones primarias y generales que se vienen este año en las que al menos otro latino está llamado a protagonizar una campaña muy especial, la de el reemplazo del polémico Seth Williams al frente de la Fiscalía Distrital. Richard Negrín, el cubanoestadounidense con una larga trayectoria en el sector judicial y público, compite con al menos seis candidatos demócratas para proclamarse como el candidato único de su partido por el puesto del Fiscal Distrital. ¿Existe alguna fuerza hispana en torno a él para impulsar su campaña y asegurar que un hombre que conoce bien los problemas de la comunidad lidere los esfuerzos para disminuir los índices de criminalidad e inseguridad de la ciudad desde un enfoque integral y multiétnico? Independientemente de si la hay o no, lo que importa es que las elecciones futuras sean interpretadas como una oportunidad para empoderar a toda una comunidad -en vez de a unas figuras individuales- y que los líderes o personas escogidas sean capaces no solo de movilizar a la gente en las urnas sino de traducir ese respaldo en beneficios palpables en las calles, en los hogares, en las escuelas y dondequiera que transcurran las vidas de miles de hispanos de Filadelfia. n Para más noticias nacionales visite nuestra web

En uniforme, Adam K. Thiel es un hombre de una seriedad implacable, su ros@ tro refleja la disciplina que lo gobierna a él y al Departamento de Bomberos de Filadelfia, una entidad que desde su creación (Filadelfia, 1736) trabaja -en sus palabras- “24 horas al día, 7 días de la semana y 365 días del año” para prevenir tragedias y salvar vidas en caso de cualquier emergencia. Sin embargo, mientras habla, deja entrever a un hombre cuyo sentido de la solidaridad lo llevó a convertirse en bombero hace más de 25 años. El comisionado Thiel - un “outsider”, como él mismo se define- llegó hace 10 meses a dirigir a un cuerpo de profesionales que supera los 2.500 miembros. En entrevista exclusiva con AL DÍA News, el líder de los bomberos de la ciudad habló sobre la participación de la comunidad hispana en una fuerza decisiva para salvaguardar la vida de miles de personas. Cuando usted llegó a Filadelfia y fue nombrado Comisionado del Departamento de Bomberos de la ciudad, parece que no recibió una bienvenida muy calurosa por parte de los bomberos de la ciudad, quizá porque la Asociación de Bomberos Afroamericanos supuso que se trataba de un cargo interino mientras se escogía a alguien de “la casa”. ¿Cómo logró ganarse la confianza de sus colegas? De hecho fue una bienvenida muy bonita. Por supuesto hubo muchas preguntas (alrededor de mi llegada), soy el vigésimo quinto comisionado de los Bomberos de Filadelfia, y el primero que viene de afuera, por lo que creo que era apenas razonable que esas reacciones se dieran antes de mi llegara, cuando nadie me conocía. Lo otro es que siempre se espera que el próximo comisionado sea alguien promocionado desde mismo cuerpo local, pero francamente lo que ha sucedido desde el primer día que llegué es que todo el mundo ha sido muy amable y comprometido. Y lo más importante es que todos trabajemos en equipo -con las diferentes organizaciones de bomberos- para Filadelfia. Eso es lo que ha sucedido desde el día uno.

En 2012 solo había 125 latinos en el cuerpo de bomberos de Filadelfia. ¿Cómo están esas cifras hoy en día? Las buenas noticias es que tenemos 250 bomberos que se identifican como latinos o latinas, y ese número sigue creciendo. Se trata de más del 8 por ciento de nuestra fuerza entera, eso es muy importante para nosotros. Lo cierto es que seguimos empleando a gente, lo hacemos cada dos años y acabamos de compilar una lista de candidatos a través de nuestra oficina de recursos humanos, que a propósito es dirigida por Pedro Rodríguez. En ese sentido esperamos seguir agregando ese segmento a nuestra fuerza de trabajo porque es muy importante poder conectarnos con nuestras comunidades a través de profesionales bilingües, no solo de español, sino de otros 140 y pico idiomas hablados en nuestra ciudad. La verdad es que esperamos que gente como yo, que nunca consideró una carrera en los bomberos, se acerque y nos conozca, hay mucha información sobre oportunidades de trabajo en www.phila.gov/fire. ¿Cómo explica la escasa presencia latina en los car-
gos ejecutivos del Departamento? La verdad es llevo apenas 10 meses aquí y no me siento en capacidad de decir mucho sobre ese particular. Posiblemente tiene que ver con los procesos de promoción y de carrera que seguramente con el aumento de 125 a 250 miembros (hispanos) seguramente se equilibrará en el futuro. Lo otro es que la gran mayoría de nuestros cargos están bajo las normas del Servicio Civil; con la excepción de 10 cargos, son más de 2.500 posiciones gobernadas por unas normas que no administramos. Sin embargo siempre estamos hablando con nuestros oficiales y miembros de recursos humanos para encontrar formas de mejorar ese asunto. Descríbanos la relación entre el departamento de Bomberos y las comunidades de Filadelfia, especialmente la hispana. ¿Cómo es? Nuestro departamento de bomberos mantienen una larga tradición de trabajo comunitario desde sus inicios en Filadelfia (…) Tenemos 63 estaciones (dos marinas) que se encuentran localizadas al interior -y son parte- de los barrios de la ciudad. Así que siempre participamos en todo tipo de actividades comunitarias, nuestras puertas siempre están abiertas. a población hispana de Estados Unidos sigue siendo una de las comunidades con mayor peso en la economía, la cultura y la política del país. Ese peso -de cerca de 57 millones de personas- ejerce una importante influencia en varios aspectos de la vida cotidiana nacional. Por ejemplo, el uso del español como segundo idioma oficial en muchas ciudades estadounidenses da cuenta de su reconocimiento político. Y no es para menos. Si se tiene en cuenta que la comunidad hispanohablante de EE.UU. supera en tamaño a la población de la mayoría de países latinoamericanos -con excepción de Brasil y México-, automáticamente se tiene una idea de por qué su idioma atraviesa y enriquece a la sociedad estadounidense. Basta ver cómo las grandes marcas comerciales y campañas políticas han diseñado estrategias publicitarias dirigidas específicamente a los hispanos -en su idioma- para darse cuenta de su papel en la economía y la política domésticas. Eso sin decir que la inmigración no cesa y que, por lo menos en Filadelfia, ha sido un pilar que desde hace dos décadas sostiene el crecimiento demográfico de la región. Según se desprende de información de la Oficina del Censo, pese a que son más las personas que se van de de la ciudad y su área metropolitana (el año pasado se fueron 13.000 más en comparación con los que llegaron), los inmigrantes siguen viendo a Philly como un lugar atractivo adonde llegar. En otras palabras, la población de Filadelfia no ha dejado de crecer desde 2009 en buena parte por la presencia de inmigrantes, muchos de ellos latinoamericanos. En la región metropolitana de Filadelfia viven cerca de 600,000 latinos - el 12% de la población local-, una cifra que ha ido creciendo sin parar en los últimos quince años. A medida que la comunidad latina crece, mayor es la importancia del español tanto en la calle como en el mundo laboral. Sin embargo, ¿es cierto que la mayor presencia de latinos en los últimos años se ha correspondido con un mayor interés por estudiar la lengua y la cultura hispana en nuestras universidades? “En los últimos tres o cuatro años, el número de estudiantes en el departamento de Estudios Hispánicos ha caído notablemente, como en la mayoría de las humanidades, desde Historia hasta Literatura Inglesa”, admite Hiram Aldarondo, jefe del Departamento de Español y Portugués de Temple University. “Esto se debe principalmente al bombardeo constante de noticias en los medios que dicen que si estudias humanidades no tendrás trabajo o estará mal pagado,” añade este académico puertorriqueño, graduado en Literatura por la Universidad de Puerto Rico-Las Piedras y con un doctorado en Lenguas Romances por la Uni-

versidad de Chicago. Aldarondo tomó el mando del Departamento de Hispánicas de Temple University hace tres años, justo cuando la universidad empezaba a notar la caída de alumnos de español, pero se lo tomó como un reto. “En Chicago, había estado enseñando español comercial, era un curso especial para estudiantes de Negocios. Aquí en Temple ya se habían dado cuenta de que los cursos de español para estudiantes de otras Majors –aparte de maestrías– era un terreno muy atractivo, pero no ha sido hasta ahora que hemos empezado a potenciarlo de verdad”, explica el reconocido académico puertorriqueño. En los últimos cuatro años, el departamento de Hispánicas de Temple University ha elaborado un plan para reajustar la oferta de títulos y currículos académicos a las nuevas necesidades laborales. “En estos momentos aprender español tiene muchas ventajas para los estudiantes de Negocios, Salud Pública, Computación y Comunicación”, áreas en las que Temple es una universidad de referencia”, explica Aldarondo. El plan ha empezado a dar resultado: “Después de tres años, este es el primer curso que hemos aumentado el número de alumnos de español”, explica. En la actualidad, Temple ofrece cursos de español comercial, específicos para estudiantes de Negocios y Administración de Empresa; Español Legal –para los que
aspiran a trabajar en el sistema judicial– o específico para trabajar en hospitales y centros sanitarios. La universidad también ha introducido programas de intercambio “muy exitosos” en Costa Rica y en Oviedo, España, con el fin de atraer a nuevos estudiantes y compensar la caída de alumnos en los cursos de español para estudiantes de Maestría, que ha sido del 30%. “La perspectiva de ser maestro de español en un colegio público ha dejado de ser atractiva, sobre todo en Pensilvania y New Jersey, donde los salarios de profesores llevan congelados mucho tiempo”, explica Aldarondo. En Estados Unidos, el español puede aprenderse como lengua secundaria durante dos o tres años en el high school. Sin embargo, el nivel adquirido no es suficiente para comunicarse con fluidez, ni siquiera para los llamados “heritage speakers”: latinos de segunda o tercera generación, que hablan el español en casa, pero que en muchos casos, no saben leer o escribir el idioma, o lo hacen con dificultad. “En Temple tenemos cursos específicos para ellos. Muchos entienden el idioma, pero les cuesta comunicarse, porque de adolescentes les daba vergüenza hablarlo en público y los padres se hartaron de decirles que les contesten en español”, añade Aldarondo Según datos del Pew Reserach Center, el 25% ALDÍAnews.com / MARZO 29 - ABRIL 5, 2017 / 9
PORTADA de los latinos de Filadelfia nacieron fuera de los Estados Unidos mientras que el 76,1% restante se corresponderían con latinos de segunda o tercera generación, o heritage speakers, cada uno con su dialecto particular. La comunidad mayoritaria son los puertorriqueños (51%), seguidos de mexicanos (21%) y dominicanos (6%). “Estamos intentando atraer a este colectivo a nuestras aulas”, explica Aladarondo, convencido de que los heritage speakers tienen una clara ventaja a la hora de encontrar trabajo en sistema de Justicia o Salud, donde se necesitan trabajadores bilingües. En otoño, por ejemplo, la facultad ofrecerá un curso de español específico para justicia criminal, enfocado a trabajos en el área de policía y justicia, donde la demanda de español no para de crecer. Sin embargo, los latinos no representan más del 25% de los estudiantes de Hispánicas en Temple. Según Aldarondo, una manera de atraer a los hispanos a la universidad es fomentar la presencia de escritores latinos que viven en Estados Unidos, como Junot Díaz, que escribe en Spanglish. “Es una literatura particular de aquí, que se escribe en dos idiomas y debe enseñarse en los dos idiomas. Además, habla del enfrentamiento cultural que tienen estos estudiantes, así que se pueden identificar con ella, se inspiran en ella”, dice. “En Villanova tenemos clases especiales para heritage speakers. Así muchos de ellos pueden saltar a clases más avanzadas de literatura o cultura española y les resulta más fácil seguir un ‘major’ en Español”, explica Silvia Nagy-Zekmi, directora del Departamento de Lenguas Románicas en Villanova University, una universidad privada en las afueras de Filadelfia. Villanova ha sido uno de los centros que más ha notado la caída de alumnos de español. El año pasado, el centro decidió suspender el major en Maestría por falta de alumnado, “aunque se trata de una medida temporal, hasta que se rediseñe un nuevo plan de estudios”, avisa Nagy-Zekmi. “Sería una pena que los programas de español no sobrevivan, especialmente cuando se espera que la población hispana represente más del 30% de la población americana en 2050. Los trabajos del futuro van a estar ahí, en el mundo hispano”, añade esta profesora de origen húngaro. Por otro lado, el major de Español sigue siendo popular y los números no han cambiado mucho en los últimos 5 y 6 años. Villanova ha sido un centro de referencia en la formación de maestros de español. “Muchas de las escuelas de los alrededores tienen maestros nuestros”, comenta Nagy-Zekmi. Uno de los objetivos del departamento es repensar los programas tradicionales y enfocarlos hacia las nuevas necesidades de la comunidad latina. Por ejemplo, varios de los cursos de español implican la colaboración con talleres sociales y organizaciones culturales de Filadelfia, “aunque la oferta cultural en español en la ciudad es todavía bastante limitada”, comenta la profesora. “El español se sigue viendo como una lengua de segunda clase y hay que esforzarse por superar estos prejuicios”, añade. 10 / MARZO 29 - ABRIL 5, 2017 / ALDÍAnews.com

A medida que la comunidad latina crece, mayor es la importancia del español tanto en la calle como en el mundo laboral. Nagy -Zekmi llegó a Estados Unidos en 1981 tras terminar un doctorado en literatura latinoamericana en la universidad de Budapest. “Estados Unidos ofrecía mejores opciones para continuar con el post-doctorado”, dice la experta húngara, que después de trabajar una larga temporada en la SUNY University en Albany, Nueva York, se incorporó a Villanova en 2003. En estos últimos años, Nagy-Zekmi explica que por su departamento ha notado una menor presencia de estudiantes latinoamericanos. En cambio, ha crecido la presencia de estudiantes españoles, que acuden a Estados Unidos atraídos por la posibilidad de hacer un doctorado y cobrar un salario al mismo tiempo, algo cada vez más complicado en Europa. Es el caso de Mercedes Cebrián, escritora y periodista madrileña, que vino a Filadelfia a finalizar su doctorado en Estudios Hispánicos en Penn University entre 2013 y 2015. “Si me iba a Estados Unidos tenía la oportunidad de que me pagaran por hacer el doctorado, mientras que en España hubiera sido imposible. Además, tanto en las universidades de EEUU como en el Reino Unido existe una importante tradición hispanista. En muchas universidades
americanas han dado clase escritores y poetas latinoamericanos exiliados, como Pedro Salinas o Axel González”, comenta Cebrián, autora de Malgastar (La Bella Varsovia, 2016), Verano azul: unas vacaciones en el corazón de la transición (Alpha Decay 2016) y El genuino sabor (Literatura Random House, 2014). Cebrián aplicó a varias universidades de la costa este, y al final se quedó con Penn, “porque le gustó Filadelfía, tenía un tamaño más manejable que Nueva York, mejor calidad de vida y está bien conectada”, explica por teléfono. Lo que más le gustó de su estancia en Penn es que en EEUU “los estudios hispánicos son un concepto más amplio, va más allá de la pura literatura y el lenguaje. Engloban cine, teatro, el humor en la televisión… quieren que ofrezcas ideas nuevas, conectes pasado con el presente, lo clásico con la teoría actual”, dice. En Penn, los seminarios y cursos eran en inglés o en español, según el perfil de los estudiantes que hubiera en clase y su dominio del idioma. “Muchos de mis compañeros eran norteamericanos enamorados de la cultura hispana”, explica Cebrián. En su curso también conoció a estudiantes y profesores latinoamericanos, muchos de ellos siguen aún en Filadelfia. “Algunos temen regresar a su país por si a la vuelta no les dejan entrar. Están preocupados por su situación legal después de la victoria de Trump”, explica. Una de las obligaciones de Mercedes como doctoranda en Penn University era dar clases de español como segundo idioma. Y así es como Mercedes coincidió con María Paredes Fernández, nominada el año pasado como “mejor profesora de español de EEUU”, por la Asociación Americana de Profesores de Español y Portugués (AATSP). Este organismo promueve el estudio y la enseñanza de español y portugués

fesoras se me acercó a ofrecerme un trabajo. Habían matriculado a demasiados alumnos y necesitaban refuerzos. Mis primeros alumnos tenían mi edad”, recuerda, riendo. Tras una temporada en Penn State, Paredes se especializó en enseñanza de español como segunda lengua en Delaware y en 2010 se incorporó al equipo de Penn. En sus clases, María intenta transmitir a sus alumnos la riqueza cultural de ser bilingüe. “No quiero que piensen en divisiones, quiero que vean que somos diferentes, pero tenemos una meta en común”. Parte de la metodología de sus clases implica proyectos de colaboración con la comunidad latina de Filadelfia y la asistencia a eventos, de los que sus alumnos después han de hacer un ejercicio escrito. “En Filadelfia faltan más ac-

PORTADA tividades en español, o igual sí las hay, pero no están bien publicitados”, dice. En la actualidad, el departamento de Español tiene entorno a 1.500 estudiantes, un 12% menos que en 2009. La mayoría de los estudiantes son de otras majors: Business, enfermería, ingeniería,.. “gente que necesita el español para sus trabajo”, explica Paredes. De cara al año que viene, el Departamento se afronta a un nuevo reto: Wharton, la facultad de negocios de Penn, ha anunciado que exigirá a sus estudiantes dos semestres de lenguas, en lugar de cuatro, lo que llevará a una nueva reducción de alumnos de español . Pero Paredes confía en que el interés por el español no caerá. Uno de los reclamos más exitosos de los estudios de español en Penn son los programas de intercambio con Buenos Aires, alicante y Madrid. “Les animo a viajar, a ir más allá de los libros” , concluye Paredes. Para mi es un privilegio exponer a los estudiantes el español, me lo tomo muy en serio”, explica la profesora por Skype. Paredes, de 33 años, nació en Filadelfia, de madre ecuatoriana y padre argentino. Ella misma se considera una “heritage speaker” y reconoce que no fue hasta entrar en al universidad que empezó a interesarse por su cultura e idioma maternos. “Aprendí el español de pequeña, hablando con mis padres en casa, escribiendo cartas a mis primas en Ecuador o cuando iba a verlas en verano. Pero lo cierto es que en la secundaria me daba vergüenza hablarlo. Si me alguien me hubiera dicho que acabaría siendo profesora de español, me hubiese reído en su cara”, dice María, que empezó estudiando Artes Visuales. La carrera no le gustaba, pero en la facultad empezó a reconectar con sus raíces hispanas y a interesarse por la lingüística. De un día para otro, abandonó la carrera de Arte para inscribirse en Pedagogía en Penn State Univesity. ulianne Pachico admite que ha tenido suerte. Con tan solo 30 años, esta joven escritora de padre americano y madre inglesa ha conseguido que su primer libro, The Lucky Ones (Spiegel & Grau, 2017), una selección de cuentos cortos inspirados en la Colombia donde creció, se haya convertido en uno de los títulos más aclamados del momento por el mundo literario estadounidense. “El libro salió publicado un mes antes en Reino Unido, pero ha recibido mucha más atención en Estados Unidos. Supongo que se debe a que en Estados Unidos existe una conexión histórica y social más importante con Colombia -y con Latinoamérica en general- que en Inglaterra”, explica esta joven escritora desde su apartamento en Norwich, en el noreste de Inglaterra, donde termina su tesis en Escritura Creativa. “Estoy contenta, porque ahora hay algunos ingleses que se acercan a mí para decirme, “mira, no sabía nada de Colombia y desde que leí tu libro tengo una visión del país un poco más allá de los cárteles, de Escobar, o de los narcos”, explica Pachico, ilusionada. “Y eso era lo que yo pretendía con este libro, contar la que fue mi experiencia creciendo allí”. Julianne Pachico llegó a Cali cuando apenas era una bebé de semanas. Sus padres decidieron mudarse a esta ciudad colombiana en los años 70 para tra-

Ella y su hermana fueron a un colegio internacional en Cali, donde iban a clase con otros hijos de expatriados y de familias colombianas adineradas, hasta que a los 18 años se marchó a Portland, en Estados Unidos, para estudiar.
CONFLICTO DE IDENTIDAD
“Podría decir que soy una escritora colombiana, aunque no tenga el pasaporte”, confiesa Julianne, en perfecto español. A pesar de tener la doble nacionalidad americana e inglesa, esta autora de melena rubia y grandes ojos almendrados admite que en Portland no se sentía del todo americana, y en Norwich, donde ahora reside, tampoco se siente cien por cien inglesa. “Preguntarse sobre la nacionalidad es un tema interesante, sobre todo cuando eres hijo de diplomáticos o de padres expatriados”, comenta. “Cada vez estamos más expuestos a otras culturas, aunque sea a través de películas o libros. Uno de los personajes que aparecen en su novela –y que también aparece en un cuento publicado en el New Yorker– es una joven colombiana que se mudó a Nueva York cuando era chica y va notando que pierde la conexión con su país, empezando por el idioma. “Es gente que se siente separada de sus raíces, sin una identidad firme. En Portland tenía amigos que no sabían hablar español, a pesar de que sus padres lo hablaban en casa. Se trata de una separación difícil, y también trágica”, explica Julianne. El tema de la identidad es sin duda uno de los temas principales de The Lucky Ones, una novela de relatos cortos entrelazados ambientados en la Colombia en la que creció Julianne, entre 1993 y 2003. Años marcados por el conflicto armado, el miedo a la guerrilla y el hecho de vivir en una burbuja para ricos y expatriados.

interesante”, me insistían”. Después de mucho esfuerzo y borradores tirados a la basura, el libro ha salido a la luz y ha sido muy bien recibido por la prensa. Silvana Paternosto, escritora colombiana y crítica literaria del New York Times Book Review, dijo que la manera con que Pachico describe el miedo con el que los niños colombianos crecen, “le había hecho volver a sentir ese nudo en el estómago”. “Fue honor leer su crítica, porque Paternosto ha sido una gran influencia para mí”, admite Pachico. La autora se siente más cómoda leyendo y escribiendo en inglés, pero cuando tiene tiempo y la tesis le da un respiro, le gusta leer la obra de autores colombianos que no han sido traducidos. En Inglaterra, Julianne está a gusto. Siente que en Europa el concepto de la identidad no es tan importante como en Estados Unidos, y ha conocido gente de todas partes. “Norwich está llena de españoles”, dice. Sin embargo, muchos europeos en Reino Unido están preocupados por la llegada inminente del Brexit y lo que supondrá la salida de país de la UE. “Los ingleses no entienden el efecto del Brexit en el resto del mundo”, se lamenta Julianne, partidaria de cada vez haya más integración de identidades, en lugar de separaciones. Su visión inclusiva del mundo se deja entrever en otra de las historias de su libro, en la que unos personajes debaten a quién invitar y a quien no invitar a una fiesta. Al final, uno de ellos
decide que “cuantos más seamos, más nos divertiremos”. “Me gusta concebir el mundo como una gran fiesta en la que todos están invitados”, dice.
VIVIR EN UNA BURBUJA
Pachico pudo experimentar en su propia piel que mantener esta visión inclusiva del mundo, que implica “saber perdonar”, no es fácil. “En Cali iba con gente que defendía a los paramilitares, hasta yo misma los defendí. Allí todo el mundo tiene a un hermano a un padre que fue secuestrado por la guerrilla y quizás murió en la selva. Puedes entender que algunos no quieran perdonar a los guerrilleros”, dice. Sin embargo, ahora se avergüenza. “Vivíamos en una burbuja, no nos mezclábamos con otra gente de la calle”, recuerda. “Nunca tome un bus, nunca estaba sola, ni siquiera para pasear al perro. Por eso ahora me parece chévere estar en Norwich, poder ir al parque en la noche, sacar mi iPod sin tener miedo”, dice. En 2004 la situación en Cali era tan violenta que muchas familias expatriadas se fueron del país. “Mi hermana y yo éramos las únicas gringas de la escuela”, recuerda. Sus padres no quisieron irse. Decían, “con suficiente tiempo, todo parece normal”. Y lo normal para Pachico se convirtió en convivir con el miedo, una sensación que ha sabido transmitir con exactitud en su libro, según la crítica. “En el fondo, el libro no es una novela, ni una colección de cuentos cortos independientes. Es un libro fragmentado, que no tiene todas las conexiones firmes, porque así me parece Colombia”, dice la autora. Una fragmentación que Pachico vivió en forma de contraste social entre ricos y pobres, entre guerrilleros y simpatizantes con los paramilitares, entre locales y expatriados. La autora cree que con el proceso de paz las cosas van a ir a mejor en Colombia. Quiere regresar pronto de visita, aunque no sabe si volverá a vivir. “Hay cosas que echo de menos, como el sentido de la comunidad. La gente en Colombia es muy abierta, enseguida te invita a su finca, a comer... La falta de recursos hace que la gente se apoye mucho en los vecinos”, dice Julianne, con voz nostálgica. “Aquí en Inglaterra son muchos más cerrados. Me paseo por las calles vacías de Norwich y me pregunto qué harán todos metidos en sus casas. iladelfia es conocida a nivel mundial por ser el lugar donde nació la independencia de Estados Unidos el 4 de julio de 1776. Al caminar por el área del Salón de la Independencia, viajas en el tiempo al poder ver monumentos como la Campana de la Libertad o una copia de la Declaración de Independencia, y salas dentro del Salón donde se discutió la Constitución. Estos edificios y elementos son considerados tesoros nacionales. Recientemente el Presidente Trump propuso recortes presupuestarios de hasta 13 por ciento para los monumentos nacionales. Si el plan presupuestal es aprobado, existe la posibilidad de que muchos monumentos a nivel nacional se vean obligados a cerrar sus puertas al público. Lo que nos lleva a preguntarnos, ¿qué monumentos de Filadelfia están en riesgo inminente? Esta es la lista de los que ya están cerrados: El New Hall Military Museum, la Bishop Whi-
te House (3rd & Walnut St.), la Todd House, la Germantown White House (también conocida como la Deshler-Morris House, visitada dos veces por George Washington a principio de los años 1790), y el Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial (3rd & Pine St.). Los cierres de estos lugares se mantendrán por lo menos hasta que la Oficina de Administración y Presupuestos haga público un plan a largo plazo para reducir el personal del gobierno federal. ejando atrás una pizarra en la que se lee a un lado “Entre y lea un buen libro” y “¡No sea estúpido!” en el otro, me encuentro con un poster viejo y andrajoso de una huelga convocada por el sindicato de la SEPTA a principios del siglo pasado, conservado gracias a un laminado igualmente marchito. A unos pocos centímetros de esta máquina del tiempo surrealista, topo con una columna de una casa de 1890 en la que en su día vivió una conocida escritora anarquista y feminista, cerca de la Universidad Drexel. Entre homenajes a trabajadores de la ciudad y reliquias pertenecientes a Voltaire de Cleyre, hay un mapa de Estados Unidos bombardeado con chinchetas naranjas que indican donde puede usted encontrar un espacio organizativo para la comunidad. Avanzando un poco más en el interior de esta tienda más parecida a una madriguera de conejos punk se expone un baturrillo de copas menstruales, vinilos antiguos a $1, postales en beneficio de los refugiados sirios y un póster que promueve con orgullo un evento pasado con un título la mar de convencional: “Science Friction: Bicycle Porno Cinema (Ciencia Fricción: Cine Porno para Bicicletas)”. Gestionado de manera exclusiva y colectiva por un grupo de voluntarios concienciados política y socialmente liberales, la Wooden Shoe Books & Records lleva radicalizando el escenario librero de Filadelfia desde 1976. Escondida entre la 7th y South Street, el stock de The Shoe va mucho más allá de literatura que exponga sus valores anarquistas. En su simple página web, The Shoe se autodefine como una “infoshop” (info-tienda), donde puede encontrarse una buena colección de obras no canónicas que probablemente estén prohibidas en su colegio católico privado y que su Barnes & Noble más cercana rechaza tener en sus estanterías. En línea con la tendencia del local a huir del capitalismo, The Shoe permite a sus socios sentarse en el suelo de la tienda y leer libros sin necesidad de comprarlos. la sección de Estudios Nativos/Indígenas Americanos hay una multitud de libros con las cubiertas traseras raídas, libros sobre Semio-Escritura/ Autonomedia, Palestina, Situacionismo, Feminismo, Ciencias Laborales, Imperialismo, el Complejo de la Prisión Industrial, el movimiento Okupa, Vida sostenible, Discapacidades y, por supuesto, Anarquismo. Para asegurarse de que los jóvenes curiosos y padres punkies también se sientan incluidos, la sección infantil y adolescente de The Shoe está bien prevista de ejemplares ilustrados que contienen visiones futuristas de la Tercera Guerra Mundial, o títulos como Being Jazz: My Life as a Transgender Teen, o I Am Malala, a c*** coloring book (en sus palabras, no las mías), The Big Gay Alphabet, A is for Activist, un libro de lectura para estudiantes de quinto grado inspirado en The Trail of Tears, y por supuesto, ejemplares de The Lorax , de Dr. Seuss. A pesar de que The Shoe se opone y reta el capitalismo, la opresión y otras opciones un-éticas, también tiene (irónicamente) la certificación 501C3 del gobierno de EEUU que la reconoce como organización sin ánimo de lucro.
El hecho de haber conseguido amoldar sus peculiaridades en el marco legal de una ong le permite asegurar su supervivencia en el mercado y cumplir con su misión corporativa: “ser un recurso de empoderamiento para el activismo, la organización colectiva, el arte, la auto-educación, la creación de comunidad, y la lucha anti-capitalista”. Más allá de los paquetes de Café Zapatista, una marca de café en grano cuya venta se destina a beneficiar las escuelas de las comunidades zapatistas mexicano-mayas, del aceite de oliva producido por una cooperativa de mujeres palestinas, de las camisetas con el estampado “Cat’s Against Catcalling” en apoyo al grupo feminista de Filadelfia Pussy Division, y de los ejemplares gratuitos del periódico anarquista local Anathema, la tienda ofrece voluntariamente su tiempo y espacio para que organizaciones y conferenciantes den charlas y talleres. Acatando los principios de The Shoe, estas organizaciones y conferenciantes deben “reconocer el privilegio de estar allí, y se comprometen a discutir y a retar todos los sistemas de opresión, incluyendo, pero no limitándose exclusivamente, temas como el racis-
mo, sexismo, clasismo, heterosexismo, o la discriminación contra discapacitados o por cuestiones de edad.” Todo esto se manifiesta en la organización de actividades diversas como lecturas de poesía, debates educacionales, encuentros semanales en el sótano de la entidad, talleres, firmas de libros y conciertos de rock. En línea con la tendencia del local a huir del capitalismo, The Shoe permite a sus socios sentarse en el suelo de la tienda y leer libros sin necesidad de comprarlos, ofrece una computadora para uso público y tiene un buzón de donativos con el siguiente mensaje colocado encima: “Wooden Shoe siempre apoyará cualquier mierda gratis donada para aquellas personas sin derechos, en situación de riesgo o sin hogar, que la necesiten.” Hace poco, The Shoe organizó una charla protagonizada por el escritor y historiador local Matt N.Lyons, centrada en el Anti-Fascismo y la necesidad de desenmascarar a la “Derecha Alternativa” y exponer a los partidos blancos nacionalistas y supremacistas. El acto político de Lyon tuvo tanta afluencia de público que varios agentes de la policía de Filadelfia se desplazaron hasta la tienda, por miedo a que estallara alguna protesta violenta, me confiesa una fuente que ha preferido permanecer anónima. Visto todo esto, ¿quién exactamente decide dedicar de forma voluntaria su tiempo a gestionar una tienda y representar a un colectivo que no hace prácticamente ningún beneficio para
CULTURA su bolsillo particular? El pasado sábado, -un día demasiado caluroso para esta época del año, por cierto - John y David Otter se sentaron detrás de la caja. Vestidos con vaqueros oscuros desgastados, parches de camuflaje y cadenas, luciendo peinados “a lo casco” al estilo de los años 70 y pendientes colgantes de cristal en las orejas, los dos hombres explicaron efusivamente su experiencia como voluntarios en esta entidad gestionada democrática y colectivamente. John cuenta que The Shoe consigue su disparatado inventario de “organizaciones, grupos radicales, cooperativas que se corresponden con el arquetipo de activistas - como por ejemplo AK Press- que ofrece una mirada crítica y diferente de la política.” Otter interrumpe para comentar que ser voluntario “puede ser muy divertido. Puedes tener un 20% de descuento, no pagar tantos impuestos, consigues los mejores sitios y lecturas de poesía, puedes vender tus revistas o panfletos… Pero también se trata de creer en una foto más grande, en la diseminación de conocimiento, y en la manera en que The Shoe añade valor
y un lugar en el camino hacia el anarquismo y el antifascismo. Otter acaba de regresar de una estancia de un mes en una tienda de campaña para dar apoyo al movimiento #NoDAPL, en contra del polémico oleducto de Dakota. Estuvo en compañía de un grupo de activistas que luchan para la preservación del agua y otros manifestantes que “definitivamente, no estaban pagados por George Soros”, comenta. “Ha sido un tiempo muy productivo. Mira, The Shoe ofrece un espacio para radicalizar el cambio a nivel local. No suena tan glamuroso cómo conseguir que Trump sea destituido, o detener la construcción del oleoducto de turno, pero es aquí [desde la comunidad] donde podemos conseguir mayor impacto. Es difícil acordarse de esto, lo más cool en el mundo del activismo es jugar el papel de David contra Goliath, pero probablemente no sea el enfoque que debamos tomar”. ■
