l peso de los jugadores negros difícilmente se evidencia en las transmisiones deportivas de la América de hoy, mucho menos la de los jugadores afrolatinos. Durante 21 años, el Taller Puertorriqueño se ha enfocado en la difícil situación de los latinos afrodescendientes en el simposio bautizado con el nombre de Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, un puertorriqueño negro que alcanzó rápida notoriedad por su activismo, escritura y por la lucha por la independencia de Puerto Rico. Lo que comenzó como un esfuerzo por discutir asuntos relacionados con la ascendencia africana en los latinos, rápidamente se transformó en un simposio más grande que tocaba la lucha contra el racismo, siguiendo el ejemplo del activismo de Schomburg y su legado artístico. Pero al igual que la experiencia de Schomburg a finales de los años 30, los creadores y artistas negros reciben poco reconocimiento. Más allá de una rodilla en tierra o una protesta silente de Colin Kaepernick, o atletas que utilicen franelas que muestren su descontento con la brutalidad policial, muy poco interés ha habido por las dificultades de un atleta negro. Y mientras muchos miran al pasado para intentar entender lo que significa ser un deportista negro en cualquier disciplina, los organizadores del vigésimo primer Simposio Arturo A. Schomburg en el Taller Puertorriqueño, “Deportes y Negritud: Inclusión” se ha organizado para determinar cómo la raza impacta las arenas deportivas en la actualidad. Examinando las contribuciones de los afrolatinos en el mundo del deporte, la meta de los panelistas y de la audiencia era determinar si existía una verdadera integración o inclusión del atleta negro. Enfrentando comunidades y culturas que les perciben como menos humano, estos atletas frecuentemente se desempeñan a nivel nacional y representan a su país o a su ciudad natal con poco o ningún reconocimiento. “Para mí, está claro que aquello que aqueja y dinamiza la raza en los deportes es un reflejo de la sociedad en general”, dice la Directora Ejecutiva del Taller Puertorriqueño, Dra. Carmen Febo San Miguel. “Las investigaciones demuestran que esos comportamientos sociales también influyen en los deportes. Realmente ha demostrado a las personas en la audiencia cuán importante y cuán impactante es”. 4 / MARZO 8 - 15, 2017 / ALDÍAnews.com

El Dr. Rob Ruck, uno de los panelistas y profesor de la Universidad de Pittsburgh, asegura que la sociedad ha tenido un gran impacto en la manera en la que se practican los deportes, aunque a veces sea la única manera en la que los jugadores marginalizados se logran sentir libres. “Estos son hombres que no pudieron ser atendidos en la escuela ni en los almuerzos. Quienes no pudieron ser atendidos en el centro de la ciudad, pero sí pudieron demostrar cuán buenos eran en el béisbol y estos equipos de negros eran muy buenos”, dijo el Dr. Rob Ruck, profesor de la Temple University. Pero para abordar el amplio problema de los afrolatinos en los deportes, incluso se abrió un debate sobre cómo atacarlo, bien fuere desde los valores que representa el deporte o cómo los jugadores negros se ajustan o cómo la sociedad entera trata a a esta población y cómo eso se traduce en el campo.

Los jugadores afrolatinos deben enfrentar muchos retos; desde la obsesión con la genética negra que trivializa el talento, la dedicación y el entrenamiento de los atletas negros, los estándares de belleza que se espera que deban mantener y hasta los estereotipos que deben superar a la fuerza con frecuencia. “El deporte es un reflejo compartido con esta nueva generación, especialmente entre los estudiantes de periodismo que quieren especializarse en deportes. Así también, esos periodistas o futuros comunicadores del deporte, suelen sorprenderse con lo que los atletas pueden lograr”, dijo Zacha Acosta, antigua jugadora Olímpica y presentadora en el simposio. “Sin embargo, en muchos casos lo que el reportero describe de los atletas que participan, es a través de la adjetivación de sus logros basándose en su participación como un espectácu-

lo por su alto desempeño. Observan los deportes como una manera de recreación o de fortaleza física adjudicada a un valor monetario”. Mencionando personas como Michael Jordan, Usain Bolt y Pedro Martínez, Acosta aseguró que muchos de los periodistas se enfocan en el mejor desempeño y les reducen a su valor monetario en vez de resaltar su atletismo. Fuera del reino Olímpico e internacional, incluso las arenas de béisbol se han visto afectadas por líneas de color. “La historia de los afroamericanos y latinos en el béisbol ha estado ineludiblemente ligada durante más de un siglo. Tanto en la evolución del juego como en la integración”, dijo Ruck. Pero al compararlos con otros atletas afro, los afrolatinos deben superar barreras parecidas a las de los afroamericanos a nivel nacional e internacional, “los norteamericanos pudieron haber sido los Jesucristo del béisbol, pero los cubanos fueron los apóstoles”, señaló Ruck. Los presentadores del simposio contrastaron las carreras del desconocido Juan Evangelista Venegas, el primero en ganar una medalla olímpica para la isla y la de Mónica Puig, la aclamada tenista que ganó el oro para Puerto Rico, declarando que el contraste podría basarse en la etnicidad: “Quiero confesar que no existe una respuesta correcta, pero se necesita profundidad en la evaluación de cómo estos atletas contribuyen a los deportes y a la sociedad. No los culpo, pues es un tema que no se ha tocado o hablado mucho”, dijo Acosta. Aunque la verdadera inclusión no parece haber formado parte de la historia de los Juegos Olímpicos o de los deportes profesionales, el panel percibe el campo de los deportes tan solo como un síntoma de la sociedad. Este tipo de fórums que permiten una discusión abierta, podrían representar el camino para abarcar conversaciones más complejas que logren derivar en la inclusión. “Es una oportunidad de educar. Existen algunas organizaciones que están comenzando a hacer eventos anuales sobre asuntos afrolatinos, pero siguen siendo pocos y distantes, así que debemos continuar”, dijo Febo. Hilda, la guatemalteca que lleva un año escondida en una iglesia de EE.UU. EFE

a iglesia Presbiteriana de San Andrés, situada al norte de Austin (Texas), es el escondite de una guatemalteca indocumentada, Hilda Ramírez, que vive allí desde febrero del año pasado junto a su hijo con miedo a ser deportada a su país natal, de dónde huyó por la discriminación que sufren las mujeres indígenas como ella. “Yo solo quiero tranquilidad para mí y para mi hijo”, señala afligida la guatemalteca de 29 años, que recuerda que nunca se escondió de las autoridades migratorias al llegar a Estados Unidos en 2014 y que explicó su caso para obtener asilo, una declaración que acabó con su detención por parte de la Agencia de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas estadounidense (ICE). Según relata, los agentes migratorios no creyeron su historia de violencia en Guatemala y la ingresaron en el centro de detención de Karnes County, uno de los dos centros familiares de inmigración en Texas, con una fianza de 10.000 dólares para salir, una cantidad de dinero que Hilda no disponía. Así empezó el periplo estadounidense de Hilda y su hijo Iván, de 10 años de edad, que llegaron a Estados Unidos tras cruzar el Río Grande, frontera natural con México, en un bote inflable con otras diez personas tras pagar a un “coyote” para llegar vivos al destino final. De este modo, después de pasar once meses en el centro de detención en Texas, fueron liberados con la condición de que Hilda llevara un grillete en el tobillo para controlar todos sus movimientos. Un centro de refugio local para personas sin techo fue la salvación de ambos durante los siguientes siete meses, hasta que, a principios de 2016, la petición del estatus de inmigrante especial juvenil (SIJS, en sus siglas en inglés) de su hijo fue negada y tuvieron lugar numerosas redadas contra los indocumentados en la zona de Austin. Asustada por una posible deportación, contactó con Grasroots Leadership, una organización local que asesora a personas de este colectivo, que le recomendó que se escondiera con su hijo en la iglesia de St. Andrews, un “santuario” dónde los agentes de inmigración tienen prohibido entrar. Como política, ICE generalmente no arresta a los inmigrantes en lugares de culto y otros lugares “sensibles”, como escuelas y hospitales. Según un memorando publicado en 2011, las detenciones o búsquedas solo se permiten en lugares “sensibles” si hay “necesidad inmediata de medidas coercitivas”, como un delincuen-

No obstante, con la inesperada victoria de Donald Trump en las elecciones presidenciales de Estados Unidos el 8 de noviembre, poco después de conocer la buena nueva, el temor a ser devuelta a Guatemala regresó a Hilda, quién sigue asustada por su futuro y el de su hijo. La tranquilidad para ellos reside dentro de esta iglesia tejana, cuya comunidad ha dado la oportunidad a Iván de centrarse en sus dos grandes pasiones: estudiar y jugar al fútbol. El niño, que nunca asistió a escuela en su país natal, disfruta ahora aprendiendo a leer, escribir y entender el español y el inglés, además de estar tomando clases de arte, matemáti-

cas y ciencias naturales en una escuela cercana al templo. Además, Iván, que llegó a la entrevista con un balón de fútbol entre sus manos, entrena y juega tres días a la semana en un equipo local y sueña con llegar algún día al nivel de dominio del balón que tiene su ídolo, Cristiano Ronaldo, futbolista del Real Madrid. Si Trump no puede ganar, entonces todos perdemos

sta semana, la Casa Blanca aprendió una lección: Menos tweets y más discursos. Y yo me encontré ante un dilema. ¿Qué puede hacer un redactor de opiniones cuando un presidente por el que no votó, y al que no apoya, dirige la palabra al Congreso y mete un golazo? ¿Puede alguien, que parece ser una mala persona, y que probablemente será un mal presidente, dar un discurso realmente bueno? ¿Y qué si —a pesar de la inquietud sobre su temperamento y sus políticas— uno encuentra que está de acuerdo con gran parte de lo que dijo el presidente? ¿Debe uno volver a reevaluar las cosas, y ver si realmente apoya a una persona contra la cual pensó que se oponía? Espero que no. En los últimos 21 meses, dediqué tanta energía y tiempo en mi desagrado de Trump que no me entusiasma la perspectiva de volver a fojas cero y tratar de aprobar al individuo. Sin embargo, habría que odiar verdaderamente a Trump para no reconocer que el presidente pronunció magistralmente un discurso poderoso, lleno de mensajes inspiradores. Sin duda, prendí el televisor en la cadena de cable que es el centro de los que odian a Trump: CNN. Muchos de sus reporteros y locutores expresan excesivamente sus sentimientos y se sienten obligados a defender su marca cuando se la ataca. El presidente, a su vez, siempre está al ataque de esa cadeREAD IN na. La acusa de comerciar con “noticias falsas”. ENGLISH Su relación se agrió en enero, cuando CNN reportó la NEWS.com/OPINION existencia de un dossier de inteligencia no-verificado, que indica, presuntamente, que Rusia tenía información comprometedora sobre Trump. Entre los escandalosos detalles figuraba una supuesta cita en un hotel de Moscú con prostitutas rusas. Después del discurso de Trump al Congreso, el locutor de CNN, Jake Tapper —quien recientemente cuestionó al presidente por criticar a los medios— hizo un comentario insidioso sobre cómo Trump hizo un buen trabajo al leer las palabras que sus redactores de discursos escribieron para él. La reportera de CNN, Dana Bash, fue más justa; reconoció un discurso que fue más presidencial que las pocas inspiradoras palabras del discurso inaugural, que según muchos observadores no tuvo efecto. Finalmente, el colaborador de CNN, Van Jones, también elogió a Trump por conducir una ovación de dos minutos para la viuda del Navy SEAL, William “Ryan” Owens, quien murió en una operación en Yemen. Jones lo calificó de “uno de los momentos más extraordinarios que se hayan presenciado en la política estadounidense, punto” y dijo que Trump “se convirtió en presidente de los Estados Unidos” en ese momento. Una encuesta de CNN/ORC de los que vieron el discurso halló que el 78 por ciento de los estadounidenses tuvo una respuesta positiva, mientras que el 21 por ciento respondió negativamente. No puede haber un discurso memorable sin frases memorables. Como: “Somos un pueblo, con un destino. Todos sangramos

la misma sangre. Todos saludamos la misma bandera. Y todos estamos hechos por el mismo Dios.” Y la siguiente: “Mi tarea no es representar al mundo. Mi tarea es representar a los Estados Unidos de América”. Y como sorpresa, Trump habló positivamente de una “reforma migratoria real y positiva”, si antes “mejoramos los puestos de trabajo y los salarios de los estadounidenses, reforzamos la seguridad de nuestra nación y restauramos el respeto a nuestras leyes”. Uno hubiera pensado que los demócratas en la sala habrían aplaudido esa parte, pero se quedaron plantados en sus asientos sin aplaudir. Quizás sea porque muchos de ellos no desean una solución al problema de la inmigración y preferirían tener ese asunto como tema de la campaña. Por supuesto, un discurso es solo un discurso. Las políticas y prioridades de Trump son más importantes. Y ahí, no todo está bien. Por ejemplo, el presidente aún explota cínicamente a las víctimas de delitos cometidos por inmigrantes ilegales. Ahora está llegando hasta a crear un oficina especial del Departamento de Seguridad del Territorio, llamada Víctimas de Delitos de Inmigrantes (VOICE, por sus siglas en inglés), que servirá como enlace entre las víctimas de delitos cometidos por inmigrantes ilegales y los Servicios de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas. No se ha dicho si el gobierno creará otra oficina para encarar otros hechos muchos más frecuentes: delitos cometidos por residentes legales y ciudadanos estadounidenses. Para los estadounidenses que detestan a este presidente, no hay incentivo para reconocerle a Trump su discurso. Pero sin duda lo estarían criticando si hubiera dado uno malo. Trump no puede ganar. Es un problema, porque si no tiene éxito en algunas de las cosas que intenta hacer, el país no progresará. Y todos perderemos. ■

esde la tarde del 7 de junio del 2010, la madre de familia juarense Guadalupe Güereca dice estar muerta en vida. Ese lunes, las balas disparadas desde suelo estadounidense por Jesús Mesa Jr., un agente de la Patrulla Fronteriza, terminaron con la vida Sergio Adrián Hernández, de 15 años de edad, quien se encontraba en territorio mexicano, y READ IN cuyo caso ha originado ENGLISH un largo litigio que hoy se encuentra en manos NEWS.com/OPINION de la Corte Suprema de Estados Unidos. El debate del caso ahora se centra en establecer si la Constitución de Estados Unidos le permite a Güereca interponer ante las cortes del país una demanda en contra de Mesa Jr. por la muerte de su hijo. El inicio de este litigio en el máximo órgano de impartición de justicia del país se produce en medio de una época de creciente tensión y

controversia sobre cómo controlar el movimiento diario a lo largo de la frontera con México, donde el comercio internacional se desarrolla de manera paralela con el narcotráfico y el tráfico de personas. Los tribunales han luchado para tratar las implicaciones de la seguridad nacional y la política exterior del caso, y los precedentes de la Corte Suprema, lo anterior de acuerdo a información publicada recientemente por The Washington Post. Sergio Adrián Hernández era el menor de los hijos de Guadalupe Güereca. Hablar con ella sobre la muerte de Sergio y cómo la tragedia afectó la vida de toda la familia resulta desgarrador. Por momentos, durante la plática, la madre de familia logra articular frases e ideas completas, pero luego la tristeza y las lágrimas parecen ahogarla. Su rostro no muestra expresión alguna, pareciera como si viviera en “modo automático”. Ahí, en su muy humilde vivienda, toma asiento en una de las camas y pareciera tomar fuerzas de algún lugar para prepararse a revivir aquel trágico momento del verano del 2010. ción parecen percatarse de que la abuela necesita de apoyo, y sin decir palabra alguna, ambos se acercan a la mujer y la abrazan. Güereca los mira con ternura y dice estar lista para iniciar la entrevista.

“MI VIDA CAMBIÓ PARA SIEMPRE”

Entonces, su cara asume un gesto de desesperanza, una expresión facial muy distinta a la inicial, a la vez que sus ojos verdosos se empiezan a nublar. “Desde ese día mi vida cambió para siempre, ha sido una vida llena de tristeza, de dolor. Yo era una persona que siempre andaba contenta, alegre, y ahora no me interesa hablar con nadie”, comentó Güereca. Antes de la muerte de Sergio Adrián, la familia de Güereca acostumbraba a salir al atardecer y compartir con las demás familias de la colonia mientras que Sergio y los vecinitos del lugar jugaban fútbol en la esquina de la calle donde vivían. Eran tiempos felices, aunque podían carecer de algunas cosas materiales, la familia estaba completa, comenta la mujer. Ernesto Rodríguez entre todos aquellos jóvenes el rostro de su hijo. “Esa esquina me trae muchos recuerdos. Yo salgo porque pienso que mi hijo está ahí, pero yo ya no quiero saber nada”, comentó mientras agachaba la cabeza para no mostrar sus lágrimas. “Varias veces le he pedido a mi Dios que mejor me recoja”, se sincera la mujer antes de estallar en llanto. Sus pequeños nietos que permanecían atentos al relato de inmediato van a tomar unos pañuelos desechables para que la abuela se seque las lágrimas, y vuelven a repetir el abrazo de hace algunos minutos. A casi ya siete años del suceso, Güereca dice que hay una pregunta que ronda su mente todo el tiempo desde el día que mataron a Sergio Adrián: “¿Por qué (Mesa Jr.) no tuvo compasión de mi hijo? Si hasta le levantó las manos ¿Por qué no le perdonó la vida —dijo Güereca con la voz ahogada por las lágrimas— si él le pidió que no lo matara? Esto es algo tan doloroso que ni a él mismo se lo deseo”.

Madre de Sergio Adrián Hernández jugaban en las márgenes del Río Bravo (Grande), a la altura de un sector de la frontera conocido como Puente Negro, mientras que Mesa Jr. cumplía con sus funciones de vigilar la frontera estadounidense a bordo de una bicicleta. En esa temporada del año, el río que marca la frontera entre ambos países prácticamente se seca, por lo que acceder a cualquier lado de la frontera no representa problema alguno. En un video dado a conocer por la cadena Univisión tres días después del suceso, se aprecia que Mesa tiene detenida a una persona muy cerca del límite fronterizo mientras que parece ser

agredido con piedras por alguien más, no se ve con claridad el rostro del atacante. En un momento del forcejeo con el detenido, Mesa desenfundó su pistola y realizó varios disparos haciendo blanco en Sergio Adrián que cae herido de muerte junto a uno de los pilares del puente. En el video se pueden escuchar los reclamos de los peatones que cruzaban por el Puente Internacional Paso del Norte quienes entre insultos le recriminaron al agente fronterizo que había disparado al menor que ya estaba en territorio mexicano. En su momento, algunas versiones periodísticas afirmaron que Sergio tenía nexos con “polleros” (traficantes de indocumentados) desde los ocho años de edad, sin embargo estas versiones nunca fueron corroboradas, ni se ha presentado ficha alguna de arresto por parte de las autoridades norteamericanas o de la Policía Municipal de Ciudad Juárez.

Eso no lo digo yo, lo dice gente que vio lo que pasó”, lamenta Güereca. A pesar de que varios medios revelaron que un disparo a la cabeza fue el que segó la vida del joven, Güereca afirma de manera categórica que fueron tres los disparos los que terminaron con la vida de su hijo. “Cuando lo estaba cambiando para su funeral tenía tres balazos, uno en la mano, otro en la espalda y uno más en la cabeza. Imagínese, por la espalda”, afirmó Güereca. Sergio Adrián era el más pequeño de los siete hijos de esta mujer de 60 años que emigró a Ciudad Juárez a la edad de 10 procedente de Durango, su estado natal a 650 millas al sur de la frontera. La madre de familia describió a Sergio cómo un adolescente inquieto pero sano, buen estudiante y un apasionado del fútbol. “Siempre le gustó patear el balón, era de los que metían goles, siguió el ejemplo de sus hermanas de jugar el deporte, quería jugar en las Chivas del Guadalajara”, señaló Güereca, quien por primera vez sonríe durante la entrevista y muestra un cuadro del escudo del equipo mexicano que perteneció a su hijo. “Ese es mi tesoro, era un cuadro que mi hijo quería mucho”. Güereca vive en una precaria vivienda de dos cuartos en la colonia Plutarco Elías Calles al noroeste de Ciudad Juárez, un sector de clase baja azotado por la delincuencia que inclusive ha sido escenario de múltiples ejecuciones por ajuste de cuentas entre bandas rivales dedicadas al trasiego de la droga en esa zona.

LA ÚLTIMA ESPERANZA: LA CORTE SUPREMA

Desde ese lugar, Güereca dice tener fe en el sistema judicial de Estados Unidos, aunque también reconoce que el actual clima antiinmigrante que se vive en el país pudiera inclinar la balanza para una resolución desfavorable para la causa que busca justicia para el menor mexicano. Luego de que un tribunal desestimara el caso argumentando que la muerte de Sergio ocurrió en México —y por lo tanto fuera de la jurisdicción estadounidense—, la Corte Suprema de Justicia de Estados Unidos estudia la posibilidad darle luz verde a una demanda de derechos civiles en contra de Mesa. El abogado Robert Hilliard del despacho jurídico Hilliard Muñoz Gonzales L.L.P., con sede en la ciudad de Corpus Christi, Texas, presentó el pasado 22 de febrero los argumentos iniciales del caso ante ocho magistrados de la Corte Suprema de Justicia. Sin embargo, la conformación de la máxima instancia judicial del país —que incluye a cuatro jueces conservadores y cuatro liberales—, evidencia que la decisión no será unánime frente a este caso.

Como antecedente del caso, en diciembre del año pasado, el exdirector de investigaciones internas de la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP, por sus siglas en inglés) James Tomsheck, afirmó en un documento presentado ante la Corte Suprema de Justicia de Estados Unidos que el agente de la Patrulla Fronteriza Jesús Mesa Jr. debería rendir cuentas ante la justicia por la muerte de Sergio Adrián Hernández. Tomsheck dijo en su informe que el entrenamiento inadecuado y las revisiones deficientes de antecedentes han dado como resultado un ambiente en el que los agentes de la Patrulla

EFE Cabe destacar que no se ha llevado a cabo hasta el momento votación alguna sobre el caso de Sergio Adrián Hernández dentro del pleno de la Corte Suprema de Justicia de Estados Unidos. A este panorama habría que sumarle la posibilidad de que un noveno magistrado se incorpore a la discusión del caso si el Senado llega a aprobar el nombramiento de Neil Gorsuch, candidato propuesto por el presidente Donald Trump para ocupar el puesto del fallecido juez Antonin Scalia. Hipotéticamente, en caso de someterse a una votación, el sufragio de Gorsuch rompería el empate y sería definitorio en el caso de la muerte del menor juarense. Lo cual pudiera sentar un precedente legal dentro de las relaciones binacionales entre Estados Unidos y México. Para el abogado José Luis Muñoz, quien forma parte del equipo legal que representa a la familia de Hernández, el caso de Sergio Adrián es muy importante dado el clima político que se vive actualmente en Estados Unidos. “Es un reto establecer la protección de inmi-

Fronteriza usan fuerza letal innecesaria, lo anterior según información dada a conocer por la agencia de noticias Associated Press. Ramiro Cordero, portavoz de la Patrulla Fronteriza en el sector de El Paso, declinó hacer dar declaraciones sobre el caso a AL DÍA News ya que este se encuentra aún en litigio. Respecto a la capacitación de los agentes adscritos a la Patrulla Fronteriza, Cordero comentó que, al igual que otras corporaciones a nivel nacional, ha tenido muchos avances. “El entrenamiento que tenemos es de los mejores a nivel mundial y tenemos nuevas herramientas que nos ayudan a realizar mejor nuestro trabajo,” comentó Cordero. “Todo el mundo necesita un soundtrack, una música que le dé energía para seguir luchando”

En su nuevo álbum, “Querido Mundo”, la cantante de origen puertorriqueño Ani Cordero ha convertido su música en una forma de conectar con sus raíces y de denunciar las injusticias sociales en Estados Unidos. ANDREA RODÉS

acida en Boston, de padres puertorriqueños, la cantante y baterista Ani Cordero tiene muy claro lo que pretende conseguir con sus canciones: denunciar las injusticias sociales y despertar la conciencia política de los estadounidenses. Así lo pudieron comprobar quienes asistieron el pasado 5 de marzo a su concierto en el Calvary Center de Filadelfia, donde la artista presentó su nuevo álbum: Querido Mundo. “Antes tocaba más rock, pero ahora estoy más enfocada en explorar las raíces de mi cultura, mezclando ritmos latinos con la protesta política”, explica Ani Cordero por Skype desde su apartamento en Brooklyn, Nueva York, donde reside. Su interés por el activismo político no es nuevo. En los últimos cuatro años, Ani ha vivido con mezcla de rabia y asombro el auge de la corrupción y los ataques a las libertades políticas en Estados Unidos. Le preocupan sobre todo los abusos policiales contra afroamericanos. “En este país la policía sigue matando a personas afroamericanas y a pesar de llegar a un juicio, nunca llegan a ser declarados culpables,”, se lamenta. Con la llegada de Donald Trump y su dis-

curso anti-inmigración, Ani teme que la situación irá a peor. “En estos momentos la situación es grave, debería interesarnos a todos”, añade, en tono preocupado. La artista ha querido dejar huella de su activismo político en la letra de las canciones de su nuevo álbum, “Querido Mundo”, a la vez que exploraba en la música tradicional de Puerto Rico y Latinoamérica. “Predominan los ritmos de percusión caribeña –congas, bongos y claves– , pero también hay ritmos andinos,” explica la cantante, de 43 años. Ani vivió la mayor parte de su infancia y juventud en Atlanta (Georgia), aunque sus padres la enviaban todas las Navidades y veranos a casa de los abuelos, en Puerto Rico, donde se empapó de la cultura y la música local. “Mi familia lleva la música en la sangre,” recuerda la artista, que a los 8 años ya quería tocar la batería. “Mi padre toca la mandolina y mi madre la guitarra. En Puerto Rico los dos eran miembros de la tuna de la Universidad de San Juan”, explica. Sus hermanos también tocan instrumentos, y la familia sigue juntándose a menudo para tocar y festejar juntos. “A los puertorriqueños nos encanta la música, ya se sabe,” explica Cordero, sonriente. Sus padres siempre la han apoyado en su carrera musical, admite. A los quince años, Cordero se compró su primera batería con el dinero ahorrado haciendo de babysitter y “nunca me lo reprocharon, aunque la batería no fuera muy típico para un chica”, recuerda. No fue hasta la universidad que Ani empezó a tomarse la música más en serio. En la facultad, Ani formó un grupo de indie-rock con otras compañeras de clase –ella era la baterista– y poco después de graduarse tuvieron la suerte de una discográfica les público un álbum enseguida. Desde entonces, Cordero se ha dedicado a la música, primero desde Atlanta, y más tarde desde Nueva York, donde ha ido consolidándose como cantautora Latina de protesta social. “Parte de mi trabajo como artista es llamar la atención sobre los temas de injusticia social que acaban enfrentando a los diferentes grupos de la sociedad. Me gusta tratar la música como una plataforma de diálogo. Todo el mundo necesita un soundtrack, una música que te dé energía para seguir luchando.” Según Cordero, el público que suele acudir a sus conciertos es una mezcla de

jóvenes Latinos nacidos en Estados Unidos, como ella, y norteamericanos blancos interesados por su trabajo musical. “Pero está claro que todos los que vienen saben que van a escuchar algo político. Ya no me puedo morder más la lengua,” dice. A pesar de que su música queda lejos del mainstream Latino, dominado por el Pop o el Reggaetón, y que probablemente nunca llenará estadios, Cordero está contenta de poder haber llegado hasta aquí. “En Estados Unidos hay buenas oportunidades para ser músico, aunque seas Latino. No sé si soy un ejemplo para la comunidad hispana, pero al menos creo que al menos sí lo soy para las mujeres. En el mundo de la música en general hay pocas mujeres, aún menos latinas y bateristas, como yo”, sonríe. Acto seguido, Ani recuerda que cuando era pequeña su tío la llevó al centro comercial Las Américas, el más grande de la capital de Puerto Rico, y

ella se puso a tocar la batería expuesta en una tienda. Todo el mundo se la quedó mirando: “Una niña tocando la batería”, decían. “Para ser músico –hombre o mujer- el único secreto es coger el instrumento y ensayar. El talento lo llevamos todos, y se desarrolla trabajando,”añade. Estos días, Ani se dedica a preparar la gira de presentación de su nuevo álbum, que empezó en Nueva York y finalizará en Atlanta, si todo va bien. No suele tocar en clubes de rock convencionales, sino en centros con un programa social activo, que le permitan quedarse charlando con el público y otros activistas cuando termina el show. “Mis conciertos son un diálogo entre el público y yo. ¡Pero también se baila!”, concluye. ■

Juan Zelada es un compositor, músico y cantante español, egresado del Liverpool Institute for Performing Artists, donde recibió el premio a mejor composición de su promoción de las manos de Paul McCartney. ordi Soler presenta “El cuerpo eléctrico”, novela que se sitúa en una época en la que Estados Unidos vivía el florecimiento de un “capitalismo salvaje”, que explica el hecho de que, años después, un personaje como Donald Trump haya podido llegar a la Casa Blanca, asegura el autor mexicano. “Si no se está al tanto de lo que pasaba en EE.UU. en el siglo XIX no se entiende el fenómeno de Trump, cómo es que un ‘showman’, un payaso, puede llegar a la Presidencia”, afirma el autor (La Portuguesa, Veracruz, 1963), recordando que el magnate invirtió “su dinero y su poder” para llegar a la Casa Blanca. La novela cuenta la historia de Cristino Lobatón, un diputado mexicano que ve en la liliputiense Lucía Zárate una oportunidad para hacer fortuna en el país vecino y, más tarde, se involucra en el mundo del tráfico de opio. Zárate, que sí fue un personaje real y fascinó a los estadounidenses de la época con su pequeño tamaño, fue solo el punto de partida para crear a su alrededor una historia más compleja en la que Lobatón, sacado de la imaginación de Soler, reflejaría lo que estaba ocurriendo en EE.UU. en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. “Lobatón en la tierra del capitalismo salvaje podía conseguirlo todo, en ese país si tienes dinero y poder puedes ser incluso el presidente de ese país, como lo ha demostrado Trump”, señala el escritor. Si se tiene en cuenta que “la forma de ser de los países es una construcción”, dentro de EE.UU. “se inventó la tierra donde todo vale”: “Cuando son ricos pueden comprar todo, todo está permitido, por eso es un territorio radicalmente distinto del mundo hispano”. En México, por ejemplo, sería “difícil” que ocurriera algo

semejante, porque “al ser un país católico y afrancesado la relación con el dinero era desde el judeocristianismo”, y se tenía de él una percepción más negativa. “El cuerpo eléctrico” narra cómo Lobatón se da cuenta de que puede aprovechar el tren que usa para los traslados de su espectáculo circense para mover el opio a lo largo del país con la ayuda de un grupo de chinos. En esa época, “el opio no era un tema de salud pública, era un tema de racismo, lo que molestaba en realidad eran los chinos”, defiende el también autor de “Ese príncipe que fui” y “Diles que son cadáveres”. Afirma que “a los gobiernos de los estados les daba igual que los hombres de los poblados se idiotizaran con el opio, les daba igual, el problema era que estaban beneficiando a los chinos”. Soler vuelve a ver en este sentido un paralelismo con lo que ocurre en la actualidad, ya que “de pronto el problema de EE.UU. son los inmigrantes en general, concretamente los mexicanos; es un delirio del tamaño del racismo contra los chinos en el siglo XIX”. Actualmente, además, ha habido un “revival de los opiáceos; hay una plaga en EE.UU. y Canadá de chicos con sobredosis”. “Había en Twitter un chiste que decía ‘dejen que Trump construya su muro, en una semana todos los adictos con mono lo van a tirar para que pueda pasar la droga’. Y no es tan chiste”, señala el autor. Soler vive en Barcelona, pero lleva un año residiendo temporalmente en Canadá, desde donde ha seguido de cerca lo que está ocurriendo en EE.UU. porque le parece “apasionante”: “Repugnante también, pero es un episodio, un momento histórico muy interesante”. n

Cuéntanos de tu carrera actual. ¿Cómo llegaste hasta allí? ctualmente trabajo en PECO. Soy parte del equipo de relaciones corporativas, un grupo bastante pequeño pero muy dinámico que administra un poco más de US$6 millones anuales para patrocinar a 300 organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro de la región. ¿Cuál es la parte más gratificante de tu carrera? Mi carrera cambia día a día, pero lo más importante que es que incidmos constantemente en la vida de individuos y organizaciones de la ciudad. Y no solo eso, también el hecho de conocer personas y aprender de ellas. Logro escuchar sus historias, conocer estudiantes que han recibido esa beca, conocer al director ejecutivo de una ONG que ha tenido un evento para familias del barrio que no lo habrían tenido sin ese financiamiento. Para mí ese es el aspecto más gratificante. ¿Qué soñabas hacer de niña? ¿Por qué? Diría que cuando niña tuve una visión de las cosas en las que estaba interesada que es bastante parecida a lo que hago actualmente. Así que aún cuando no tengo exactamente esos títulos que solía enlistar, hay muchos aspecREAD IN tos de ellos que poseo hoy. Pero no ENGLISH creo que realmente estuviera intereNEWS.com/OPINION sada en hacer todas esas cosas, sino que de alguna manera son aspectos de mi trabajo que han conjugado el ser creativo con hacer algo en lo que se cree, y creo que por eso estoy contenta con todo. ¿Qué mujer te inspira actualmente? ¿Por qué? La mujer que más me ha inspirado en mi vida es mi madre Jenine. Ella ha sido una fuerza digna de reconocer. Es fuerte y gentil al mismo tiempo, algo con lo que las mujeres se pueden identificar en general. A la edad de 24 años ella estaba sometiéndose a la quimioterapia. del cáncer. No tengo idea de cómo lo logró, pero lo hizo. Y es porque siempre tuvo ese tipo de visión a largo plazo en la cabeza, y todos los días era capaz de sobrevivir porque se recordaba a sí misma la meta. Creo que es algo que yo también hago. ¿Cómo te han forjado las mujeres en tu vida? Una de las cosas más locas que mi madre me dijo alguna vez fue “haz algo que ames hacer”. Me doy cuenta ahora de lo radical que puede ser esa idea. Hay tantos jóvenes que conozco que dicen “quiero trabajar en algo que produzca mucho dinero” o “quiero hacer algo que me haga notorio”, pero ninguna de esas cosas se compaginan con algo que aman. Si estás haciendo algo que amas, entonces vivir de ello y hacerte un nombre vendrá solo. ¿Quiénes fueron tus mentores? Mi primer mentor fuera de casa fue una profesora del colegio, su nombre es Kass y solía volverme loca. Yo juraba que era gritona, bulliciosa, y sencillamente pensaba “esta profesora está demasiado loca”. Pero poco a poco me fue ganando y creo que poco a poco yo también me gané su cariño. Fue en mi último año de colegio, cuando ella organizó a los profesores para que, a través de una venta de tortas, pudieran recolectar el dinero que necesitaba para acceder a actividades a las que no podía. Ella me enseñó que está bien recibir, y que hay muchas maneras de dar a cambio. ¿Quién ha sido la mujer más influyente en tu vida? Quienes me inspiran son quienes conocí en la escuela. Eran todas latinas que estaban metidas en algo, estaban construyendo la fuerza para sí mismas. Eso fue inspirador. Éramos muy parecidas, todas trabajando por lo mismo. Una de mis metas personales es asegurar que nos reconozcamos los unos a los otros y enfocarnos en nuestra labor como servidores. ¿Qué significa para ti ser latina en tu área? ¿Sueles ser la única mujer o latina en la sala? Frecuentemente suelo ser la única latina, la única joven y/o la única mujer, y es algo que suelo identificar. Es una línea muy delgada, un balance difícil de mantener porque aunque te representas a ti misma en ese momento o a tu organización, de una u otra manera funcionas también como símbolo. A menudo conozco personas que nunca han conocido a alguien de ascendencia latina. Y de repente tu comportamiento se transforma en algo observado con detenimiento e incluso juzgado, entonces cuando te encuentras en ese espacio es ciento por ciento necesario que tengas tanta seguridad en ti misma como competencia laboral, porque puedes ser la persona más competente que haya pero si no confías en eso, nadie lo verá jamás. ¿Qué consejo profesional le darías a las mujeres jóvenes? Mi consejo a las jóvenes latinas es que deben ser tan audaces como ambiciosas, sobre todo en Filadelfia. Cada latina que conozco tiene un sueño. Nunca les falta ambición. Lo que he descubierto es que dentro de esa cultura nos falta educación –para con las jóvenes – sobre la audacia de lograr las metas. Porque si tengo una ambición pero mi audacia no existe, es un poco como un árbol que se desploma en el bosque, nadie sabrá que lo tienes. ■

Mi mejor amigo trabajaba en la Independence Blue Cross y me habló de una oportunidad para trabajar con temas de socios, eventos y comunidad. Como venía del sector ‘non-profit’, pensé que podría ser un buen cambio. Ya sabes, llegas a ese momento en tu carrera en el que te planteas que ya lo has dado todo y que ya va siendo hora de que alguien te releve en tu trabajo y lanzarse a probar algo nuevo. ¿Qué parte de su trabajo considera más gratificante? Al final, se trata de saber si lo que estás haciendo está aportando alguna diferencia en algún lugar. Quizás no sea un impacto que puedas visualizar físicamente al momento, pero sabes que, sea un proyecto de recolecta o de embelleciREAD IN miento, hay una oportunidad de cambio, ENGLISH y tu formas parte de él. NEWS.com/OPINION ¿Cuál era el trabajo de sus sueños de pequeña, y por qué? Creo que es diferente. Yo quería ser fisioterapeuta. Supongo que quería ayudar físicamente a las personas, desde el campo médico. Pero rápidamente me di cuenta en el primer año de College que no era lo que quería. [...] No puedo imaginarme haciendo eso ahora.

¿Qué mujer la inspira actualmente y por qué? Tengo dos: Lorena Marshall Blake, que es mi vicepresidenta de Asuntos con la Comunidad, y Sheila Hess, que solía ser mi superior, y ahora trabaja en la alcaldía de Filadelfia. Son mujeres impresionantes. ¿De qué forma han marcado las mujeres su vida? Las mujeres que han estado en mi vida me ha enseñado prácticamente todo lo que sé, me han enseñado a distinguir entre lo bueno y lo malo, a ser una persona correcta. Esto tiene que ver con mi mamá, ella me enseñó una de las mejores lecciones de vida: sentir orgullo de quien soy. Eso es muy valioso en estos días en que los estándares de belleza y éxito son tan altos e irreales. ¿Quiénes han sido sus mentores? Extraoficialmente, Lorena y Sheila. Veo a Lorena cada día. Veo lo que hace y lo que ella significa para la gente cada día. A Shelia la veo cada día en las redes sociales y nos escribimos mensajes a diario. Creo que son mis “mentoras” no oficiales, a pesar de estar separada de ellas y del trabajo que hacen. ¿Quién ha sido la mujer más influyente en su vida? Definitivamente, mi madre fue quien me enseñó a ser lo que soy. Mi hermana pequeña es una inspiración para mí. Las dos me han inspirado porque siempre han estado ahí. Siempre me han apoyado. ¿Qué significa ser latina en su sector? ¿Cómo se siente por ser habitualmente la única mujer, o única latina, en la oficina? Creo que nunca le he dado mucha importancia a este detalle porque suele haber tantas mujeres en la oficina que diría que nuestro trabajo está claramente dominado por mujeres. Ser latina en este sector y hacer mi trabajo es solo una muestra de que hay otra gente como yo. Hay al menos una persona como yo. Hay gente ahí fuera haciendo cosas buenas y me sirve para ponerla de ejemplo a la comunidad. ¿Qué consejo profesional daría a las mujeres más jóvenes? Les diría que construyan relaciones. Que no hagan networking solo con el fin de hacer networking, o porque es lo que se supone que tienen que hacer, o porque solo quiere ir y recoger tarjetas de visita y estrechar manos. ¿Cuál cree que es la barrera más grande para el liderazgo femenino? Supongo que siempre ha existido el concepto o asunción errónea de que una mujer no puede ser líder porque en algún punto va a querer irse y formar una familia, y nunca va a regresar al trabajo. Pero yo creo que las mujeres lo hacen constantemente. Se casan, tienen bebés y cuando vuelven al trabajo todavía son líderes. En mi sector tenemos un buen puñado de mujeres líderes, en mi empresa las veo constantemente. ¿Qué puede hacerse para incrementar el número de latinas en su industria? Creo que asistir a las ferias de educación, ferias de trabajo. Ir a diferentes eventos como el que tendrá lugar el próximo 12 de abril, así como a otras actividades relacionadas, que le permitan conocer quién es quién en su comunidad, las empresas de su comunidad, las organizaciones de su comunidad. ¿Algun talento o hobby secreto? No creo que tengamos ningún talento o hobbie secreto más allá de entrenar y trabajar. Lo haces porque lo tienes que hacer, y porque ya no no eres una jovencita, y ya no puedes comer todo lo que quieras. ¿El trabajo comunitario? Voy a trabajar en la comunidad. Iré a ayudar a la Escuela Shepherd. Como parte del videojuego “Borders” (Fronteras), los jugadores deben evadir a agentes de la Patrulla Fronteriza fuertemente armados y hacerse con agua para sobrevivir a las altas temperaturas del desierto si quieren conseguir su objetivo de cruzar a Estados Unidos. “Durante las pasadas elecciones se desarrolló un sentimiento xenofóbico

y de odio en contra de los inmigrantes, documentados e indocumentados. Por eso comencé a pensar en la idea de personas simulando cruzar la frontera, una forma en que los jugadores pueden ‘ponerse en los zapatos’ de los migrantes”, dijo el joven. “Mientras crecía, mis padres me contaban historias de lo difícil que fue para ellos cruzar la frontera y llegar a este país en busca del ‘sueño americano’. Me hablaban sobre el ‘mosco’, nombre que los migrantes le dan al helicóptero de la Patrulla Fronteriza que utilizan para buscarlos”, explicó. Una de las características del videojuego es que cada vez que un jugador fracasa en su intento por cruzar la frontera, su “cadáver” queda en el juego. ■

PHILADELPHIA GAS WORKS NOTICE OF PROPOSED GAS COST RATE DECREASE To Our Customers: As part of its annual Gas Cost Rate (GCR) filing, Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) is filing a request with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to decrease the GCR portion of your bill effective September 1, 2017. Customers are notified of the annual rate increase or decrease by providing this notice for the annual GCR filing on March 1. PGW is requesting a projected rate decrease of $0.1278 per one thousand cubic feet (Mcf) based upon a comparison between the GCR effective March 1, 2017 ($4.9430 per Mcf) and the projected rate in its annual GCR filing ($4.8152 per Mcf). This notice describes PGW’s gas cost rate request, the PUC’s role, and what actions you can take. The GCR is designed to recover the cost of natural gas that PGW purchases from gas suppliers and does not include a profit margin. The rate will be recalculated to show actual costs on a quarterly basis. Customers are notified of this quarterly rate recalculation by a message on each customer’s bill after the dates of each quarterly filing. The quarterly filing dates are March 1, June 1, September 1, and December 1. The rate may change if the recalculated rate is different by more than 2% from the rate that is approved. PGW Gas Cost Rate Decrease PGW has requested an overall rate decrease of approximately $4.5 million per year. If PGW’s entire request is approved, the total bill for a typical General Service (GS) Residential Heating Customer using 76 thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of natural gas per year would decrease from $100.34 to $99.49 per month or by approximately 0.8%. The total bill for a typical GS Commercial Heating Customer using 332 Mcf of natural gas per year would decrease from $354 to $350 per month or by approximately 1.0%. The total bill for a typical GS Industrial Heating Customer using 717 Mcf of natural gas per year would decrease from $771 to $764 per month or by approximately 1.0%. The total bill for a typical Municipal Service (MS) Heating Customer using 1,192 Mcf of natural gas per year would decrease from $1,078 to $1,065 per month or by approximately 1.2%.
