Changing the narrative about Latinos
D
says (and we agree), it is time to change the narrative. The business sector years ago realized that the Latino consumer market could be counted in billions and started hawking wares and services to us in Spanish and Spanglish. But the steps from consumers to makers, from employees to employers have been harder for the mainstream to acknowledge. Showing that the Latino community has already taken those steps and continutes to do so has been the work of AL DÍA for the past 20-plus years. It is one of the reasons we signal boost the work of Latinas and Latinos involved in everything from mom-and-pop storefronts to those who serve on the boards of corporate giants; from creatives to administrators, and everything in between. It is a simple but monumental step to go from thinking of Latinos as purely consumers of what the U.S. provides (materially and intellectually) to contributors to all the U.S. provides. But it is a requisite change in thinking. And long, long overdue.

OPINION
BEFORE HIS PRESENTATION, hosted by AL DÍA at the Union League of Philadelphia, Charlie Garcia visited Mayor Michael Nutter at City Hall.
‘The New Latino Paradigm’ is more than a one-and-done Charlie García presentation at an AL DÍA event. It is the requisite new way of thinking about Latinos in the U.S. espite what some Republican presidential hopefuls might have you think, Latinos in the United States are not depleting the nation of its resources and culture, but immeasurably enriching it. “If you are older, white, and interested in collecting social security for the next 20 years, you should get up, find the closest Latino next to you, hug them, and say thank you,” said Charlie Garcia at his Sept. 3 sold-out presentation for AL DÍA at the Union League. That is because, the Latino entrepreneur and CEO of the Association of Latino Professionals for America says, the continued growth of the Latino population means growth in the nation’s GDP. “The new Latino paradigm” that García talks about is built on the understanding that by the year 2032 around 70 percent of employment growth will be at the hands of Latinos. This is not the way Latinos are routinely depicted by news or entertainment media but, Garcia

»MARGO Y. MELCHOR
