Mexican Catholics resumed the pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe, in Mexico City, after the restrictions due to

Even in staunch Catholic bastions like El Salvador and Honduras there is hope.

Earlier this year, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled that El Salvador must reform its strict abortion laws after it heard the case 30-year-old Manuela, who died in prison after she was sentenced there getting the procedure done. The court determined that an abortion was necessary because continuing with her pregnancy posed a danger to Manuela’s life.

The recent election of Xiomara Castro as Honduras’ first woman president also brings a sense of hope that attitudes and laws could change around abortion in the Central American country.

It currently bans all procedures, but Castro does support it in the case of rape.

That already represents a step in a forward direction, unlike the U.S., which seems to be moving backward. z
