I

n an extensive report, AL DÍA highlights the work done by four medical professionals, who will be honored in AL DÍA Top Doctors Forum. A call for service and talent are a common thread in the professional lives of Dr. Hema Datwani, Dr. Christian Witzke, Dr. Juan Cerezo and Dr. Ana María López, 4 of 13 people celebrated this year.

Dr. Hema Datwani, of Venezuelan descent and an upbringing in Panamá, found that part of his social service in the Latin community was communicating effectively with patients in their own language, as at least half of them do not speak English.

Dr. Witzke is from Caracas (Venezuela). His work reaches patients with cardiovascular conditions, almost 70% of them are Latin. “When I say ‘hola’ in Spanish, they crack a smile and they just feel more comfortable,” he said.

ENGLISH moved to Jersey at age 7. He is his fourth year of medicine in Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine and he has mentored Latin undergraduate students to access opportunities in higher education. He says that right now, “there are more than 50 Hispanic students.”

Dr. Ana María López is from La Paz (Bolivia) from parents who were pathologists. She is an oncologist and says about patients with cancer: “even if you can’t cure them, you can make a difference.”

She is also involved in academia.

In this issue, an analysis of the implications of the new guidelines for the School District of Philadelphia. Under these guidelines quarantine in case of infection is only five days, among other measures.

“The return after five days is unduly risky,” said the Philly Health Commissioner, Cheryl Bettigole.

La doctora Hema Datwani, con orígenes venezolanos y crianza en Panamá, encontró que parte de su servicio social hacia la comunidad latina era la ventaja del idioma para comunicarse efectivamente con los pacientes, ya que al menos la mitad de ellos no habla inglés.

El doctor Witzke es de Caracas (Venezuela). Su labor alcanza a pacientes con dificultades cardiovasculares, de los cuales casi el 70% son latinos. “Cuando digo ‘hola’ en español, enseguida les sale una sonrisa y se sienten más cómodos”, indicó.

Juan Cerezo es colombiano y llegó al norte de Jersey de 7 años. Cursa cuarto año de medicina en Lewis Katz School of Medicine de Temple University y ha asesorado a estudiantes latinos de pregrado para tener oportunidades en la educación superior. Cuenta que ahora “hay más de 50 estudiantes hispanos”.

La Dra. Ana María López es de La Paz (Bolivia) y de padres patólogos. Es oncóloga y señala que con los pacientes con cáncer “si no los puedes llegar a curar, se puede hacer una diferencia”. También está presente en el mundo académico.

En esta edición, también se hace un análisis de las implicaciones de las nuevas pautas para el Distrito Escolar de Filadelfia. Implica que la cuarentena en caso de contagio es apenas de cinco días, entre otras medidas.

“Un regreso después de cinco días es en exceso riesgoso”, indicó la comisionada de salud de Filadelfia, Cheryl Bettigole.

he Board of Directors for the NJ LGBT Chamber of Commerce announced on Monday, Jan. 3 that Augusto Penaranda Jr. will serve as executive director of the New Jersey LGBT Chamber of Commerce.

Penaranda Jr. will be the first Latino and LGBTQ+ man to serve as Executive Director for the NJ LGBT Chamber.

The New Jersey LGBT Chamber of Commerce is a business organization dedicated to advancing business pursuits and bettering the quality of life of LGBT and allied professionals in the tri-state area.

The new executive director received his Master of Science degree in International Relations and Public Policy from William Paterson University of New Jersey.

PRIOR ROLES

Earlier in his career, Penaranda Jr. served as Public Information Officer for the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs in the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General.

In this previous role, Penaranda Jr. served under Paul Rodríguez, the former NJ Division of Consumer Affairs director.

Rodríguez now serves as the U.S. Department of Health’s deputy general counsel for the Biden administration.

Penaranda Jr. was also once the Chief External Relations Officer for the American Red Cross of New Jersey. It was here that Penaranda Jr. served as the Latino Media Spokesperson.

During this role, he proved to have invaluable heart and grit when he assisted Florida and Texas in Hurricane Irma and Harvey relief, serving as a bilingual communicator and disaster volunteer.

Penaranda Jr. also provided relief for those affected

by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, supplying resources and communication throughout a time of communicative stagnation.

Peñaranda hijo será el primer latino y hombre LGBTQ+ en servir como director ejecutivo de la Cámara LGBT de Nueva Jersey.

La Cámara de Comercio LGBT es una organización dedicada a hacer progresar de los emprendimientos de negocios y mejorar de la calidad de vida de la comunidad LGBT y de sus aliados profesionales del área de los tres estados.

El nuevo director ejecutivo recibió su título de Máster en Ciencias en Relaciones Internacionales y Política Pública de la William Paterson University de Nueva Jersey.

CARGOS ANTERIORES

En una etapa más temprana de su carrera, Peñaranda hijo sirvió como oficial de relaciones públicas de la División de Atención al Consumidor en la Fiscalía General de Nueva Jersey.

En este rol, Peñaranda hijo estuvo bajo la dirección de Paul Rodríguez, el antes director de la División de Atención al Consumidor.

Rodríguez ahora se desempeña como viceasesor del Departamento de Salud de los Estados Unidos en la administración Biden.

Peñaranda hijo también fue director de Relaciones Públicas de La Cruz Roja Americana de Nueva Jersey, y fue allí que Peñaranda hijo ocupó el cargo de vocero para los medios de comunicación latinos.

s quickly as COVID-19’s Omicron variant came to town, it seems to also be leaving at a similar pace.

That does not mean it’s over by any stretch of the imagination.

COVID-19 cases are still hovering at 1,980 per day, which is still astronomically higher than at any other point in the pandemic, but down from a peak of about 3,500 from last week.

However, given the fast decline in cases, the Philadelphia Health Department offered new guidance to the School District of Philadelphia around COVID-19 during its daily city briefing on Thursday, Jan. 20.

The new guidance is more in line with that issued by the Centers for Disease and Control at the end of last year, which shortened quarantine times to five days in the event of COVID exposure or symptoms that lasted only one day.

The editorial of the Spanish newspaper on Jan. 22 analyzed the first year of the Joe Biden’s administration, and indicated that “despite the achievements, the Democrats in the Capitol today convey a feeling of weakness.”

One of the conclusions that it raises indicates that “Joe Biden’s current difficulties contrast with the favorable data that he can present a year after he took office as the president of the United States. In the last months, he has approved the highest public spending in decades, the country has grown by 6%, unemployment has decreased to 3.9%, and the 2020 recession has improved at an unprecedented speed. Biden won the presidency as the most voted candidate in history, partly out of fear of a second term by Donald Trump, and partly driven by the left current of the democratic party, which is partisan of strong progress in social policies to reduce the gigantic inequality in the country. (…). In international politics, Washington has gone back to normal with international forums and duties, but Trump’s actions in the area left a deep mark that Biden cannot erase only with speeches.

Europe has increased his mistrust towards Washington regarding his defense, and China has gain capacity to lead the global agenda.”

Commenter Ariel Segal, on Jan. 23, starts with a discouraging overview of president Biden’s first year. “This article should have been called ‘Biden’s First Year’, but the bad moment the current president is going through may be due not only to an economic commercial, and health international context that is out of his control being a global issue, but to the fact that his fellow Americans have already ruled out what was before a rule and not an exception: enjoy a political system without a perennial, polarizing and a bully ruler, like in Trump’s term.”

In that sense, he says that “as it happens in may times, and places, societies let lose their “wishful thinking,” a type of magical thinking, where a savior will bring back the ‘good times´”. He explains that “many Americans start to minimize the importance of the coup attempt on Jan. 6 of 2021, organized by Trump with the assault to the Capitol (...). he importance and value of the medical field can simply not be overstated.

The presence and cultural competence of medical professionals can literally be the difference between life and death.

No matter where we come from, what language we speak, or what religion we practice, our health is a critical component to our quality of life, and physicians play a crucial role in that.

Each January since 2019, AL DÍA has aimed to celebrate the medical

ENGLISH field and put to the forefront some of the most accomplished and up-andcoming medical leaders the region has to offer with the annual AL DÍA Top Doctors Forum.

Dr. Hema Datwani, Dr. Christian Witzke, Juan Cerezo and Dr. Ana Maria Lopez represent four of 13 of this year’s honorees.

Each has a unique backstory and journey, but share the similar mission of helping the diverse and multicultural communities that make up our region.

Con el evento anual AL DÍA Top Doctors Forum, que tiene lugar cada mes de

enero desde el 2019, AL DÍA se ha propuesto celebrar el trabajo del campo médico.

Ha puesto en primera fila a algunos de los líderes del campo médico de mayor reconocimiento y a quienes están surgiendo en la región.

La Dra. Hema Datwani, el Dr. Christian Witzke, Juan Cerezo y la Dra. Ana María López son 4 de los 13 homenajeados de este año. Cada uno tiene una historia y un recorrido únicos, pero comparten la misión de ayudar a comunidades diversas y multiculturales que conforman nuestra región.

From spending the earlier part of his life in Colombia, to moving to North Jersey at the age of seven, Juan Cerezo has always been surrounded by diverse, mostly Hispanic communities.

The child of two parents who didn’t speak English and without a formal high school or college education, he grew up with a very humble background.

“Fortunately, where we lived, everyone else was Spanish-speaking immigrants, so [my parents] were able to at least find a job that can suit them,” he said.

Originally wanting to become a chef, Cerezo was accepted into Rutgers University through a pipeline program, where he majored in microbiology.

“It was because of that program that I really found medicine and science,” said Cerezo.

At Rutgers, he was able to find a physician, who served as a valuable mentor. While serving as a teaching assistant, Cerezo also developed a passion for teaching and working with underserved communities.

This motivated him to attend medical school, where he is currently a fourth-year medical student at Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine.

Cerezo is very involved with the Latino Medical School Association (LMSA) at Temple, an endeavor he started because he saw a need within the school.

The chapter was very small, and going to the regional and national conferences inspired him to make the effort to take Temple’s chapter to the next level.

He then ran for the mentorship chair position, where he mentored undergraduate students applying for higher education opportunities and MCAT studying, and is currently the director for the Northeast Region of the organization.

“Now Temple’s chapter is one of the biggest chapters in the country,” said Cerezo. “We have over 50 Hispanic students involved, and I think it’s important for the community because it brings us closer.”

“People don’t want to go to where there’s nobody that looks like them. And a school like Temple, located in North Philadelphia with such a diverse community and underserved population, we want people to want to go and work there,” he added.

As Cerezo continues to decide what his next steps will be, leadership and mentorship within the medical field remains his primary goals.

“I strive to be a leader in my community and a voice for people from underserved communities, but especially communities of Hispanic and Latino groups,” he said.

“Unfortunately, a lot of minorities that end up becoming doctors, we’re very few in numbers in academia. That’s important to have because that’s how we get better recruitment and teach our colleagues about the health problems that our commu-

ESPAÑOL Juan Cerezo pasó la primera parte de su vida en Colombia para luego instalarse en el norte de Jersey cuando tenía 7 años. Siempre ha estado rodeado de comunidades diversas, la mayor parte de ellas de comunidades latinas.

Sus padres no hablaban inglés y no tenían educación secundaria o universitaria formal, por lo que creció en un entorno humilde. “Afortunadamente, donde vivíamos todos los demás eran inmigrantes que hablaban español, por eso mis papás pudieron encontrar un trabajo adecuado para ellos”, dijo.

Como inicialmente quería ser chef, Cerezo ingresó a la Universidad Rutgers mediante un programa de apoyo educativo y profesional para las minorías, donde se graduó con énfasis en microbiología.

“Fue gracias a ese programa que realmente conocí lo que era la medicina y la ciencia”, dijo Cerezo.

En Rutgers, encontró un doctor en medicina que fue un valioso mentor. Mientras trabajaba como asistente docente, Cerezo desarrolló la pasión por enseñar y trabajar para comunidades con atención médica deficiente. Esto lo motivó a asistir a la facultad de medicina en Lewis Katz School of Medicine de Temple University, donde cursa cuarto año de medicina.

Cerezo es muy activo en la Asociación Médica de Latinos (LMSA) en Temple, un proyecto que inició porque vio una necesidad dentro de la facultad. La sede regional era muy pequeña y asistir a conferencias regionales y nacionales lo inspiraron para llevar a la sede de Temple a un nivel superior.

Luego se postuló para la posición de director de mentoría, donde asesoró a estudiantes de pregrado que se postulaban a oportunidades de educación superior y preparación para las pruebas MCAT. Actualmente es director para la región noreste dentro de la organización.

“Ahora la división de Temple es una de las más grandes del país”, dijo Cerezo. “Hay más de 50 estudiantes hispanos, y pienso que es importante para la comunidad porque nos vuelve más unidos”.

“La gente no quiere ir donde no haya personas que no se vean como ellos. Una institución como Temple, ubicada en el Norte de Filadelfia, con una comunidad tan diversa y una población con poca atención, queremos que la gente vaya y trabaje allí”, agregó.

Mientras Cerezo continúa decidiendo cuáles serán los próximos pasos en su carrera, el liderazgo y la mentoría dentro del campo médico siguen siendo sus metas más importantes.

“Me esfuerzo por ser un líder en mi comunidad y la voz de las personas de comunidades que no tienen suficiente atención médica, pero en especial de hispanos y latinos”, dijo.

“Desafortunadamente, de los muchos que estudian medicina y provienen de minorías, somos muy pocos los que nos desempeñamos en el ámbito académico. Eso es muy importante, pues así logramos una mejor contratación y enseñamos a nuestros colegas acerca de los problemas que tiene nuestra comunidad”.

A LIFELINE FOR WOMEN

UNA MANO AMIGA PARA LAS MUJERES ENGLISH Given her background as half Indian and half Venezuelan and the fact that she grew up in Panama, working with the Latin American community has always been an important part of Dr. Hema Datwani’s identity.

Her decision to enter into the medical field came later.

While studying at the University of Miami, she decided to pursue a degree in public health, before later earning a master’s at Emory University.

“I went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for medical school, and there my interests were sparked by obstetrics and gynecology,” said Dr. Datwani.

While at Michigan, she found a large number of immigrants from Latin America.

As a native Spanish speaker, Dr. Datwani saw firsthand just how important the ability to communicate effectively with patients is.

“Seeing the impact I could have on their care was really essential to me, and integral in my deciding to continue in obstetrics and gynecology, and wanting to ultimately work with a lot of our community,” she added.

That’s exactly the work she does now at Einstein, as an OB/GYN generalist.

“I take care of women all throughout their reproductive lives,” said Dr. Datwani. “From teenagers starting on their first birth controls and having questions about sexual health, all the way up until women of menopausal age and helping manage some of their menopausal needs, as well.”

Within her clinics across the Northeast, about 50% of her patients are Spanish speaking or have limited English proficiency.

Being a bilingual medical professional allows Dr. Datwani to provide a more holistic approach to care. She’s personally seen the benefits that diversity and bilingualism in the field has through the confidence many of her patients have in her, bringing their daughters, aunts, nieces into her office.

“We’re able to kind of grow our community that way, and provide care in a more culturally appropriate way,” she said.

“The only way to get patients in and facilitate access to care is by having the diverse faces that they can identify with and that they feel comfortable communicating with.”

Su decisión de entrar en el campo médico llegó después.

Cuando estaba estudiando en la Universidad de Miami, decidió estudiar salud pública, para después de graduarse de una maestría en la Universidad Emory.

“Estudié medicina en la Universidad de Michigan en Ann Arbor y allí despertó mi interés por la obstetricia y la ginecología”, dijo la Dra. Datwani. Cuando vivió en Michigan se encontró con una gran cantidad de inmigrantes de Latinoamérica.

Como hablante nativa del español, la Dra. Datwani vio de frente lo importante que es poder comunicarse de manera efectiva con los pacientes. “Ver el impacto que yo podía tener en su atención fue esencial, y una parte integral de mi decisión de continuar con la obstetricia y ginecología y querer finalmente trabajar con una gran parte de la comunidad”, agregó Es exactamente el trabajo que hace en Einstein como ginecoobstetra generalista.

“Cuido a las mujeres a lo largo de su vida reproductiva”, dijo la Dra. Datwani. “Desde adolescentes que comienzan con sus anticonceptivos y con preguntas sobre su salud sexual, hasta llegar a las mujeres en la menopausia ayudándolas a manejar sus necesidades en esta etapa”.

En sus clínicas que están por todo el noreste, el 50% de sus pacientes son de habla hispana o tienen una competencia limitada en inglés.

Ser un profesional médico bilingüe le permite a la Dra. Datwani tener un enfoque holístico en la atención en salud.

Ha visto en persona los beneficios que tienen la diversidad y el bilingüismo en este campo; en el nivel de confianza que sus pacientes tienen en ella, al traer a sus hijas, tías, sobrinas a su oficina.

“Podemos hacer crecer nuestra comunidad de esa manera y prestar atención médica de una manera apropiada culturalmente”, dijo.

A GRATIFYING FIELD

UN OFICIO GRATIFICANTE ENGLISH As a teenager, Dr. Christian Witzke was always fascinated by the biology and physiology of the human body.

He had opportunities to see various surgeries being performed, and also got involved in outreach efforts, such as going into nursing homes and visiting the elderly.

“That inspired me to help others in the early life. With that and the interest in human physiology, and specially, anatomy, I made that decision to become a physician,” said Dr. Witzke.

Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Dr. Witzke completed his medical school journey in his native country in 2000 before moving to Philadelphia two years later.

After completing his internal residency and fellowship, he took a two-year detour working in interventional cardiology in Boston, before returning to Philly in 2010.

“Having trained at Einstein, I really understood that there was a large Latino community, which I felt I identified with,” he said about his return to the city.

Shortly thereafter, Einstein began expanding its efforts to provide outreach to Latino patients with different heart and cardiovascular ailments.

According to Dr. Witzke, currently a cardiology specialist at Einstein Healthcare Network, between 60% and 70% of his daily patients are of Latino descent.

“It’s been very gratifying because the patients are really not only happy because they might expect to see a non-Spanish speaking person when they walk in. But when I say ‘hello’ to them in Spanish, they immediately crack a smile and they just feel more comfortable,” he said.

While he admits being in the medical field can be difficult, “I have no regrets,” said Dr. Witzke. “I think I would do it 100 times if I had to.”

ESPAÑOL De adolescente el Dr. Christian Witzke siempre sintió fascinación por la biología y la fisiología del cuerpo humano. Tuvo la oportunidad de presenciar varias cirugías y también participó en tareas de promoción, tales como visitar a los adultos mayores en casas para la tercera edad.

“Eso me inspiró a ayudar a otros desde que empezaba a vivir. Por eso y por mi interés en la fisiología humana, en especial la anatomía, tomé la decisión de ser doctor”, dijo el Dr. Witzke.

Oriundo de Caracas (Venezuela), concluyó sus estudios de medicina en su país de origen en el año 2000 antes de mudarse a Filadelfia dos años después.

Después de finalizar su periodo de residencia y especialización, tomó un pequeño desvío de dos años trabajando en cardiología intervencionista en Boston, antes de regresar a Filadelfia en el 2010.

“Después de trabajar en Einstein, realmente me di cuenta de que había una comunidad latina grande con la que me sentí identificado”, dijo acerca de su regreso a la ciudad.

Poco tiempo después, Einstein comenzó a ampliar sus esfuerzos de llegar a pacientes latinos con diferentes afecciones cardiovasculares y cardiacas. Según el Dr. Witzke, especialista en cardiología en Einstein Healthcare Network, entre 60% y 70% de los pacientes que atiende a diario son de ascendencia latina.

“Ha sido muy gratificante porque los pacientes no son solo felices porque tal vez esperen encontrase con un doctor que no habla español cuando entran, además cuando digo “hola” en español, enseguida les sale una sonrisa y se sienten más cómodos”, dijo.

Aunque admite que trabajar en el campo médico puede ser difícil, “no me arrepiento de nada” dijo el Dr. Witzke. “Lo volvería a hacer 100 veces si tuviera que hacerlo”.

For Dr. Ana Maria Lopez, a career in the medical field seemed almost destined.

Born in La Paz, Bolivia, both her parents were pathologists who moved to the United States for their residency and training.

“Early on, I knew I wanted to be a physician, and I really wanted to be involved in healing,” said Dr. Lopez, also noting that she knew she wanted to be a different kind of physician than her parents.

Her goal was to enter into an area where she could constantly learn, and also be able to closely interact with people.

With that, she decided to choose oncology.

“I really liked the opportunity to bond with the patient,” she said. “There’s the emotional intensity and the intellectual intensity, and I felt with a patient who has a diagnosis of cancer, even if you can’t cure them, you can make a difference.”

In addition to her career as a medical oncologist, Dr. Lopez’s work has also been in academic medicine.

Her involvement has led her to various key leadership roles, including president of the American College of Physicians, and currently, a professor and vice chair of medical oncology at Kimmel Cancer Center.

“Patient care, education, research, engaging with the community, all of those are healing opportunities,” she said. “They’re all opportunities to help things be better.”

As a leader in the field, Dr. Lopez credits listening as among the most important qualities to have.

“Leadership is really about the people you are leading. So you have to really be on time with where they are and what they’re thinking,” she added.

Dr. Lopez has also been a longtime advocate for health equity.

Among the many things that the pandemic has taught us are just how many factors impact health, and how health outcomes often different from patient to patient.

“Whatever I can do in that one-on-one, whatever we can do as a health system and as a profession, is really important because we need people to be able to achieve the best health that they can,” said Dr. Lopez.

A medical educator at heart, Dr. Lopez often tells her students success in the medical field starts at a young age, with the belief that you can do it, and the desire to help and lift others.

“Sí, se puede,” she said. “At the same time, things take work. It’s so amazing to learn, it’s so amazing to help people and work together to find solutions. All of those things are so powerful.”

“Desde temprano supe que quería ser doctora y, realmente, quería hacer algo donde pudiera sanar”, dijo la Dra. López, quien resaltó que sabía que quería ser un tipo diferente de médico que sus padres.

Su meta era entrar en un área donde pudiera aprender constantemente e interactuar con las personas de una manera más cercana. Se decidió por la oncología.

“Realmente quería una oportunidad de conectar con el paciente”, dijo. “Hay una intensidad emocional e intelectual, y sentía que con un paciente de cáncer, incluso si no los puedes llegar a curar, se puede hacer una diferencia”.

Además de su carrera como oncóloga, el trabajo de la Dra. López ha sido dentro del entorno académico. Su compromiso la ha llevado a ocupar varios cargos de liderazgo, incluyendo la presidencia del Colegio Americano de Medicina.

Actualmente es catedrática y vicepresidenta de oncología en el Kimmel Cancer Center.

“El cuidado de los pacientes, la educación, la investigación y el compromiso con la comunidad son oportunidades de poder curar”, dijo. “Son oportunidades para ayudar a que las cosas mejoren”.

Como líder en el campo, la Dra. López le da el crédito a la capacidad de escuchar y dice que es una de las cualidades más importantes que se deben tener. “El liderazgo se basa en las personas a las que diriges. Así que debes ser muy acertado con el momento en el que están y lo que están pensando”, agregó.

La Dra. López ha sido por mucho tiempo una defensora de la igualdad en la salud. Entre las muchas cosas que la pandemia nos ha enseñado está el grupo de factores que afectan la salud y cómo los resultados en ese campo difieren entre paciente y paciente.

“Lo que yo pueda hacer en ese momento uno a uno, lo que podamos hacer como sistema de salud y como profesión, es realmente importante porque necesitamos que las personas logren tener el mejor estado de salud posible”, dijo la Dra. López.

Una educadora de corazón, la Dra. López les dice a sus estudiantes con frecuencia que el éxito en el campo médico empieza a temprana edad, con el convencimiento de que es posible y con el deseo de ayudar y elevar a otros.

“Sí, se puede” dijo. “Sin embargo, las cosas llevan trabajo, pero es increíble aprender, es increíble ayudar a las personas y encontrar soluciones. Todas esas cosas son muy poderosas”.

wo historic figures, Martin Luther King and César Chávez, have ended up in the election reform debate that sought to guarantee several voting rights, and was scuttled last week.

The reform, pushed by president Joe Biden and the democrats was seeking better access to vote by the poorest communities—many of them Latin—with alternatives such as expanding mail vote or declaring election Tuesday a holiday to encourage participation. This law being scuttled in the Senate, right before President Joe Biden completed his first year in power, was another big blow for the already battered presidency.

But beyond the political ins and outs, two of the most important names in the fight for civil rights came up in the debates for the access to vote.

Martin Luther King’s family, called on Americans to not celebrate his day on Jan. 17, as they were concerned for voter’s rights, “there is no celebration without legislation”, said Martin Luther King III, and further said in an interview with “Axios” that “each generation should earn its own freedom, and this is a way to regain freedom.”

Concern behind this message stems from the little access that the poorest people have to election processes; for many, a type of racism and segregation that still prevails in the American system.

The debate goes beyond skin color and touches ethnic groups such as Latin people, whom Dr. King reached in the 1960s with César Chávez, during the famous farmer protests in California.

La reforma, impulsada por el presidente Joe Biden y los demócratas, buscaba mayor acceso al voto para las comunidades más pobres (muchas de ellas latinas) con medidas como ampliar el voto por correo o declarar festivo el martes de elecciones para alentar la participación. El hundimiento de la ley en el Senado, justo un día antes de que Biden cumpliera su primer año en el gobierno, fue otro gran golpe para la ya maltratada presidencia.

Pero más allá de las movidas políticas, en medio de las discusiones por el acceso al voto, volvieron a aparecer King y Chávez, dos de los líderes más importantes de la lucha por los derechos civiles.

La familia de Martin Luther King invitó a los estadounidenses a no celebrar el día en su honor el 17 de enero, ante la preocupación por los derechos de los votantes.

“No hay celebración sin legislación”, dijo Martin Luther King III. En entrevista con Axios indicó que “cada generación debe ganarse su libertad, y esta es una forma de volver a adquirir libertad”.

El mensaje se dio ante la preocupación por el poco acceso de las personas más pobres a los procesos electorales. Y es para expertos un modo de racismo y segregación, que aún prevalece en el sistema estadounidense.

ENGLISH During the fight for the civil rights, many organizations had similar interests to MLK’s, one of these was the movement led by Chávez, who marched with grape growers from Delano to the capitol in Sacramento, California to ask for salary improvements for farm workers, most of them Mexican immigrants.

In that moment, King did not give room for the Latin farmers to feel confronted to black workers and the civil rights movement. In fact, in 1966, he sent a telegram to Chávez that said: “our separate fights are in fact only one: a fight for freedom, dignity and humanity.”

CHÁVEZ IN A GRAPHIC NOVEL

Chavez’s memory has also been revived these days thanks to the launching of the graphic novel “Who was the voice of the people? César Chávez” written by Terry Blas and illustrated by Mar Julia.

Blas, the son of a Mexican mother and an American father, tells the story of the famous march in March 1966. During his investigation, he found that at the start of the march, Chávez twisted his ankle, but he continued marching with a cane. “It was probably very bad for his wellbeing, but he could identify with the idea of working hard for something that you have set out to do. He kept on pushing for his final goal,” said Blas in an interview with AL DÍA. For the author, highlighting Chávez’s figure is key, especially among young people, “I think that having streets with his name, foundations that honor him every year, a César Chávez Day, all those are great things. A person who made such a big work expecting that his community was better treated should be constantly celebrated. Life is short. Let’s celebrate good things and good people,” concluded Blas.

Durante la lucha por los derechos civiles, muchas organizaciones tenían intereses similares a los de King. Una de ellas era el movimiento liderado por Chávez, quien hizo su famosa marcha de los agricultores de la uva, desde Delano hasta el capitolio de Sacramento (California), para pedir mejoras salariales para los trabajadores del campo, en su mayoría inmigrantes mexicanos.

CHÁVEZ EN UNA NOVELA GRÁFICA

Justamente la memoria de Chavez también ha revivido en estos días gracias al lanzamiento de la novela gráfica ‘Who was the voice of the people? César Chávez’ (‘¿Quién era la voz del pueblo? César Chávez’, escrito por Terry Blas e ilustrado por Mar Julia.

Blas, hijo de madre mexicana y padre estadounidense, cuenta la historia de la famosa marcha de marzo del 66. Durante su investigación, encontró que al inicio de la marcha, Chávez se torció el tobillo, pero siguió caminando con un bastón. “Aunque probablemente fuera perjudicial para su bienestar, podía identificarse con el hecho de trabajar duro para lograr algo que te has propuesto. Siguió empujando hacia el objetivo final”, comentó Blas en entrevista con AL DÍA. Para el autor, resaltar la figura de Chávez es clave, especialmente entre los más jóvenes. “Creo que tener calles con su nombre, fundaciones que lo celebran cada año, un día de César Chávez, todo eso son grandes cosas. Alguien que hizo un trabajo tan grande con la esperanza de que su comunidad fuera tratada mejor debería ser constantemente celebrado. La vida es corta. ovak Djokovic is not the only one in trouble for refusing to be vaccinated or skipping sanitary measures. From actors such as Robert de Niro, Jhon Malkovich, Jim Carey and Letitia Wright (from Black Panther), to famous athletes like Aaron Rogers; Packers’ quarterback, Green Bay; and Brooklyn Nets’ play-maker, Kyrie Irving, have stood their ground on the matter. However, their stories are now just one more anecdote in the pandemic. But, what happened recently with number-one ranked tennis player, have placed him in the middle of the debate as he undergoes a diplomatic drama.

Although the Serbian player is not a stranger to controversy due to his statements quite disconnected from official scientific information; like the one he made in 2010, when he announced, in his book “Serve to Win”, his gluten intolerance after following his nutritionist’s dubious recommendations; the weight of his words go much further at this critical juncture of the pandemic.

Amid a legal dispute that extended over 11 days, Djokovic lost his chance, not only to defend his title at the Australian Open, but also to break the record of most Grand Slams won in history. However, the athlete is not responsible for this situation, because according to his defense he moved to Australia only after he received a controversial special permit from the organization of the tournament.

This permit authorized him to play without being vaccinated, as he had already got infected for the second time on Dec. 6 last year; after he broke the isolation protocol in Belgrade, a fact that was confirmed by himself.

After he was notified of the permanent cancellation of his visa, aside from not being able to return to the Oceanian country in three years, the Serbian tennis player came back to his home country to the news that he would not be accepted for any of the big tournaments unless he got vaccinated. Sus historias han quedado como una anécdota más en medio de la pandemia. Sin embargo, lo que sucedió en los últimos días con el tenista número uno del ranking mundial, con drama diplomático de por medio, puso a Djokovic en el centro del debate.

A pesar de que el serbio ya ha sido asociado con polémicas declaraciones en el pasado por sus conceptos poco apegados a la información científica oficial, como lo hizo por ejemplo en el 2010 en su libro ‘Servir para ganar’, cuando anunció su intolerancia al gluten tras seguir las dudosas indicaciones de su nutricionista, en esta coyuntura de pandemia el peso de sus palabras va mucho más allá.

En medio de una disputa judicial que se extendió por once días, Djokovic perdió la oportunidad, no solo de refrendar su título en el Abierto de Australia, sino de romper el récord de más Grand Slams ganados en la historia.

De acuerdo con su defensa, se trasladó a Australia solo después de recibir un permiso especial por parte de la organización del torneo, que lo autorizaba a jugar sin estar vacunado ya que se había contagiado, por segunda vez, el 16 de diciembre del año pasado, tras romper su protocolo de aislamiento en Belgrado.

Tras el anuncio de cancelación definitiva de su visa, con el agravante que no podrá regresar al país oceánico hasta dentro de tres años, el serbio volvió a casa con la confirmación de que ninguno de los torneos grandes del año lo recibiría a menos de que se vacune. Durante el escándalo de los últimos días, se convirtió en la figura pública más importante asociada directamente con quienes se oponen a la vacunación, mártir para unos, villano para otros.

Some of number-one ranked’s arguments for not receiving the vaccine were given in declarations via Facebook where he pointed out that, even though he is not an expert, he keeps his mind open, and that he only wants the “option to choose” the best for his body. He also said that he didn’t think it was right “to be forced into vaccinating” to travel or to compete in tournaments.

From the beginning of the pandemic, Djokovic opposed the official health institutions. Only a few months after this world crisis was announced, he decided to hold a tournament disregarding biosafety measures, which resulted in him getting infected, and so did other players.

For more than a decade, Nole has been, not only a symbol of this sport

worldwide, but also a referent of self-improvement and fighting spirit, especially for having a harsh childhood during the Yugoslav War. But his frequent disregard of safety measures during the pandemic, taking advantage of his celebrity status, and trying to impose his conditions above the ones that rule the rest of us mortals, have made Djokovic one of the most polarizing symbols of this crisis .

Although Djokovic has not expressed any kind of support to anti-vaccination groups, which have backed him amid the events that occurred during the last weeks; the scenes of this controversy have not precisely created the nicest atmosphere to promote massive immunization in the world; all the while the Serbian, unintendedly, has turned into “public enemy” number one.

A tan solo unos meses de la declaratoria oficial de esta crisis mundial, organizó un torneo invitando a desatender las medidas de bioseguridad, lo que llevó a su contagio y el de otros jugadores.

Durante más de una década, Nole ha sido, no solo un símbolo del deporte a

nivel mundial, sino una referencia de superación y lucha, sobre todo por su dura infancia en medio de la guerra de los Balcanes. Pero su constante falta de respeto a las normas desde el inicio de la pandemia, aprovechando su estatus de celebridad, siempre tratando de establecer primero sus condiciones sobre las que nos rigen en este momento al resto de los mortales, lo han convertido en uno de los símbolos más polarizantes de esta coyuntura.

Aunque Djokovic no ha expresado apoyo público a los grupos antivacunas que lo han respaldado en medio de los sucesos de las últimas semanas, el escenario generado por esta controversia no es el ejemplo más amable para impulsar la inoculación masiva en el mundo, mientras el serbio, sin proponérselo, se transforma en el “enemigo público” número uno.

hen we think about finding Hispanic food in the United States, Goya’s white print on a blue background comes to mind. But not everybody knows that this great empire was born in 1936 from Carolina Casal and Prudencio Unanue. He emigrated to Puerto Rico in 1902, and they got married in 1921. In 1916, they moved to New York and their company is today the biggest Hispanic food company in the United States.

At their new destination, where Unanue went to study business, the couple soon missed the flavors and the food of their roots. That is how they started a business in a small establishment on Duane Street in Lower Manhattan. They had already identified a growing market of people who wanted Spanish products like olives, olive oil, and sardines.

The Hispanic community of New York began to grow, and so did the products sold by Goya. Today, they come from the

ENGLISH Caribbean, Central America, and South America; but also from Mexico and Spain.

More than 2,500 products under the same slogan: “If it’s Goya, it has to be good.”

A few years later, in 1958, the company expanded to the point that it had to move to Brooklyn, and in 1974, to Nueva Jersey. They went from importing to processing their own food, packing it, and designing their packaging. Innovation made them the pioneers of TV advertising in Puerto Rico and become popular among immigrants coming from the Caribbean to the United States.

For many years, Goya was a distributor of star products like Polar and Harina Pan, especially known among Colombians and Venezuelans. Also, Postobon soft drinks, which in countries like Colombia are more famous than Pepsi or Coca-Cola. After several disagreements, the company is now dedicated to its own products.

The company, originally called The Unanues and Sons, purchased the name Goya from a Moroccan sardine vendor in 1936 for one dollar. It was not until 1961 that it officially became Goya Foods, even though it used the name since its beginnings. Today, the company has 26 centers distributed among the United States, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Spain, and has more than 4,000 employees.

Its sales reach $1.5 million dollars a year.

At Goya’s 75th anniversary, President Barack Obama welcomed its founder at the White House for Hispanic Heritage month. He thanked his great contribution to the nation, along with the rest of the Hispanic community. The family Unanue has the second place among the richest Latin families of the United States with an equity of 700 million dollars.

Controversy hit when in 2020 President Trump and her daughter Ivanka promoted the brand’s beans, for which he was criticized, and sparked a boycott against the brand. She posted a tweet endorsing them in Spanish and English. 9 years later since the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case Roe Vs. Wade legalized abortion in the United States, several cities saw protests and manifestations supporting progress made on a bill in Tallahassee, as it was approved in Mississippi, to prohibit abortion after week 15 of pregnancy.

Even, President Joe Biden expressed his commitment to defending the right to abortion, which he indicated is “being attacked like never before.”

The newer guidelines from the city health department also call for proper ventilation in every school building, implementing contact tracing for exposures, weekly screening tests for at least 10% of the school’s unvaccinated population, having a separate area for those (students and faculty) that do return from a five-day quarantine to eat lunch without masks, and also requiring them to wear masks between days six to 10 after undergoing a five-day quarantine.

Schools also no longer have to close to in-person learning should more than 10% of its students test positive for COVID-19.

IS IT REALISTIC? NO

Before any implements the new guidance, schools must consult the health department on its capability to carry out all the recommendations. The harsh reality is that not all of the city’s schools can meet the new guidelines as they stand.

Currently, the School District of Philadelphia is still operating with a 10-day quarantine period for students and faculty. The city health department recommended that protocol stay in place for schools that can’t meet the new guidelines.

It’s a balancing act school districts like Philadelphia have tried to strike since going back to school in the Fall to maintain in-person learning, which leaders all the way up to the White House have identified.

“The guidance is our best current attempt to keep children learning in-person as much as possible while keeping

children, teachers, and other staff members as safe as possible,” said Bettigole.

BALANCING IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL

Before the measures were even recommended, the district has maintained a similar balancing between in-person and virtual learning thanks to staff shortages.

It’s taken the form of an ever-updating list of schools across the city that are entering and leaving virtual learning.

The list was updated on a daily basis over the first weeks of the new year, but became less frequent in the last two weeks of January.

At the peak of the virtual learning shift to kick off 2022, 40% of the district’s schools were virtual. However, following MLK Day on Jan. 17, only 15 schools were left offering virtual instruction.

For its own part, the school district has said it will maintain its own additional COVID protocols in buildings, which includes mandatory masking, hand-sanitizing stations, encouraging frequent hand washing, air purifiers in classrooms and common spaces.

When it comes to COVID testing and vaccination, the district requires testing for students and faculty that show symptoms (faculty is tested weekly), and vaccinations for all faculty and student-athletes.

Over the next month, the district has also partnered with the Black Doctor’s Consortium to bring vaccines to more communities across the city.

ll eyes are on Biden, that is how commenters and editorials capture him all over the world, regarding his first year in power, the risk of a conflict with Russia for Ukraine, and the implications of Donald Trump’s comeback to the political stage.

They are many things at the same time that compromise his credibility and the hope his election brought in and out of the country for nothing different from international leadership, respect for multilateral agreements, and the social guarantees for an enormous population.

While the president notes that there is a big difference in results to date in comparison with his Republican predecessor, people may have expected a rapid change, but Biden does not have a magic wand.

The worst thing is that, despite the gravity of the attack to Congress by hordes of Trump followers, his popularity in public opinion may grow if Biden does not show “magical results” in the short term. It is hopeless for millions of people who believed that things were going to be resolved overnight.

The United States has indeed been recuperating international leadership, but it has a hot potato in his hands called conflict with Ukraine, which reminds the world a war of unimaginable proportions could erupt at any moment.

Now, the problem with politics is that, as with safety and the weather, one thing is reality and another one is sensation. Biden is failing sensation.

Apart from that, many are asking themselves what would happen to the United Sates and the planet if Biden does not defeat Trump: for sure being oblivious to the seriousness of the pandemic, playing with Putin without considering the seriousness of a confrontation and being limitlessly unaware of the devastation of climate change.

Surely on Latin America’s side, as it occurred during the American Civil War, they will be very attentive to elections in the United States this year, and in the future, in order to know if the United States is still an ally or if it is necessary to look somewhere else to ensure a stable future.

The only thing certain is that Trump’s ghost is wandering and many are in panic.

on los ojos puestos en Biden, así se refleja en los comentarios y editoriales de medios del mundo, a propósito del primer año de Gobierno, de los riesgos de un conflicto con Rusia por Ucrania y por lo que implica el regreso de Donald Trump a la escena política.

Muchas cosas a la vez, que ponen en juego su credibilidad y la ilusión que generó su elección dentro y fuera del país.

Nada diferente del liderazgo internacional y la garantía del respeto por los acuerdos multilaterales y las garantías sociales para una inmensa población.

Mientras el presidente advierte que hay una diferencia enorme en los resultados hasta hoy con su antecesor republicano, pero tal vez la gente esperaba un cambio rápido y Biden no tiene una varita mágica.

Lo que es más grave es que, a pesar de lo grave que resultó el ataque al Congreso por la horda seguidora de Trump, su fuerza entre la opinión pública pueda crecer si los “resultados mágicos” de Biden no se dan en el corto plazo. Es la desesperanza de millones de personas que creyeron que de la noche a la mañana todo se iba a solucionar.

Lo otro es que sin duda Estados Unidos ha ido recuperando el liderazgo internacional, pero tiene en sus manos la “papa caliente” del conflicto de Ucrania, algo que recuerda que el mundo en cualquier momento puede entrar en una guerra de inimaginables proporciones.

Ahora, el problema de la política es que, como ocurre con la seguridad y el clima, una cosa es la realidad y otra la sensación. Y Biden está perdiendo en la sensación.

Por otro lado, muchos se preguntan qué sería de Estados Unidos y del planeta si Biden no derrota a Trump. Alejado seguramente de la gravedad de la pandemia, jugando con Putin sin medir la gravedad de una confrontación y desconociendo sin límites la existencia devastadora del cambio climático.

En la orilla de América Latina seguramente, como ocurrió durante la Guerra de Secesión, estarán atentos a lo que pase electoralmente en Estados Unidos este año y en lo por venir para saber si sigue teniendo en Estados Unidos un aliado o si toca mirar para otros lados para garantizar un futuro estable.

Lo único cierto es que está rondando el fantasma de Trump, que a muchos les causa pánico.
