mong political analysts, it has been said that the Republicans are making progress in elector acceptance, at the cost of the Democratic Party and President Joe Biden, whose image continues to lose ground. The issue seems to be noticeable in South Texas. However, a progressive Democrat is countering the idea that Latinos are moving to the Republican side. He is Greg Casar, the son of Mexican immigrants, whose life story is the focus of this issue. Casar is a former Austin City Councilman and won the primary for Texas’ 35th Congressional District with more than 60 % of the votes. For the past ten years, that space has been held by veteran democrat Lloyd Doggett, who in redistricting moves is now in the 37th. That opened the opportunity for Casar in one of the most democratic districts in the state, heavily Hispanic and with a large black population. Casar’s family did not come to the United States like many Latinos. His father came from Guadalajara to Houston to work as a doctor at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. Greg attended private school and grew up in a privileged area. But he has always been at the forefront of the fight against inequality. He even spoke out at the University of Virginia against the poor salaries of the institution’s workers. And that issue of labor exploitation has characterized him. In 2010 he focused on a project to organize undocumented workers in Austin. “My goal is to be the most pro-worker member of Congress, period”, he told the Texas Observer this year. In 2014 he won the elections and, at 25, became Austin’s youngest councilmember. In his words, he “wanted us to stop being a faux-progressive city and start

ENGLISH being a progressive city”, to indicate his motivation for having run for office. Throughout his political career, what he has shown is temper and commitment to citizen causes. In his proposal today, in addition to labor demands, are the expansion of voting rights, the protection of abortion rights, and a more sensible legislation on the use of weapons.
MOURNING FOR FORCED DISAPPEARANCE
Another topic to highlight in this edition has to do with the Mexican writer Laura Baeza, in connection with her debut novel Niebla ardiente, which focuses on the drama of forced disappearance, a crime suffered by Mexico and Colombia, among other countries. The lead suffers the disappearance and subsequent death of her sister, something she cannot overcome, even if she changes cities.

he Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) recently welcomed 75 new members into its ranks after firefighters/EMTs finished a ninemonth training program. This year was the first live audience fire department graduation after the start of the pandemic. However, this year’s graduation ceremony was special for other reasons, as well. Captain Cecelia Ortiz shared an anecdote about why it’s personally special for me. “The first brother and sister Latinos graduated from the academy together,” she said.
Cecilia Ortiz is the mother of Maya Sierra and Kennieth Berrios — the brother and sister who recently graduated from the academy. Her husband is Fire Battalion Chief Hector Sierra. Now, four members of the same family are a part of the Department. “It is exciting for me to see them in their element. We are a family committed to community service. I have always believed in giving back to the communities that have helped to develop me. I have always tried to instill those same values in my kids. It is important to create generations of service,” said Ortiz. Sister and brother Maya Sierra and Kennieth Berrios are so happy they were there for each other when needed. Berrios says that he could not have done it without her. Es importante crear generaciones de servicio”. Maya Sierra y Kennieth Berrios están muy contentos de haber estado ahí el uno para el otro cuando más lo necesitaban. his past week, Philadelphia hit yet another grim milestone in what’s been now two-and-a-half years of grim milestones, as more than 300 homicides have been recorded in the city, and not even 200 days have passed in the calendar year. The same thing happened in 2021, but at just a slightly quicker pace. That year ended with 562 homicides. There are solutions. They come in the form of individuals and community organizations putting in the work on the ground every day, even if they’re never seen in the news. Philly’s new budget also includes $184 million in anti-violence spending, but if it’s anything like the last budget to combat gun violence, the solutions being funded are long-term. That’s not to say they’re not important, but in the immediate, the city is hurtling towards yet another record year for homicides in the city. It’s so much of an issue that even Republicans at the state level are trying to get involved. They’ve long hurled insults at both Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and Mayor Jim Kenney to boost campaigns for higher office, but now they’re trying to take Philadelphia’s gun violence problem into their own hands.
IMPEACHING KRASNER?
Their solution is establishing a PA House Select Committee on Restoring Law and Order. That’s what it’s called, and it’s a five member investigative committee that will conduct a deep dive into the inner workings of District Attorney Larry Krasner’s Office. Kenney’s received his fair share of flak for his gun violence response — especially of late — but it is Krasner who has gotten most of the ire from conservatives in the city, and across the state and country.

¿DESTITUIR A KRASNER?

POLÍTICA ENGLISH The Philadelphia District Attorney was reelected to a second four-year in 2021 after running a relatively smooth race against Democratic primary challenger Carlos Vega. Unable to beat him in elections, PA Republicans have sparked the narrative of trying to impeach Krasner from his post in Philadelphia. What happens after is as good as anyone’s guess, but at the conclusion of its investigation, the new Select Committee will have the opportunity to offer guidance to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on how to proceed.
Given it and the PA Senate are still majority Republican, that could mean a shaky future for Krasner depending on how the midterm elections go in Pennsylvania. Just like at the federal level, impeachment is voted on in the House before being transferred over for a trial in the Senate. The last time this happened in PA was in 1994, as Supreme Court Justice Rolf Larsen was impeached and then removed from office for having an improper discussion with a lawyer about court matters.

fter Rep. Mayra Flores won in the special election to fill the U.S. House seat in Texas’ 34th Congressional District until the end of this year, Democrats shrugged their shoulders and prepared to reload for what they were calling the real battle in the November midterm elections. In that election, Flores will play the incumbent to a challenge from current Rep. Vicente González, who represents Texas’ 15th Congressional District, but under the previous census-drawn district lines.

ENGLISH González is the heavy favorite considering he is part of the Hispanic bastion that’s held Democrats down for decades in South Texas’ congressional districts. Outside of the 34th, which was established with Flores’ predecessor Filemón Vela Jr., it’s included figures like longtime Rep.
ENGLISH However, it’s exactly that long history that Flores has used to boost her own campaign, saying Democrats — like those elected for so many years in South Texas — have always overlooked the majority-Hispanic community there. It worked in the special election along with a boatload of money and tactics right out of the playbook of former President Donald Trump.
AN ‘EYE FOR AN EYE’ DOES WHAT?
To put it bluntly, she is a fear monger who flouts her marriage to a Border Patrol agent to combat immigration and her faith to curb women’s reproductive rights among other right-wing talking points. Her views are hateful and their presentation equally as brash, but González’s campaign did everything in its power this past week to match that energy. It did so by hiring an Internet blogger to launch attacks at Flores. If the blogger had stuck just to her campaign talking points, there was plenty to work with, but instead phrases like ‘Miss Frijoles’ and a ‘cotton-pickin’ liar’ emerged as frequent labels of Flores. In an effort reminiscent of the Code of Hammurabi, Democrats fought Flores at the same level and now look blind to the race they’re running against her. The phrases used by the blogger were racist, and have been rightfully called out as so by people on both sides of the political aisle. González has tried to distance himself from them, but the money trail never lies, as a $1,200 check does exist in Federal Election Commission records being written out to the McHale Report blog on June 24.
THE MONOLITH DISCUSSION… AGAIN
The timing is also extremely poor for Democrats, especially for their relationship with Latino voters, as the González campaign controversy came on the heels of First Lady Jill Biden equating Latinos to breakfast tacos and bodegas in a speech at the UnidosUS Annual Conference.

The former Austin City Councilmember won his primary for Texas’ 35th Congressional District with more than 61% of the vote. His closest competitor, moderate, longtime Texas State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez only garnered 16%. Texas’ 35th Congressional District has been held for the last 10 years by Rep. Lloyd Doggett, a Democrat who was once described as an “endangered species” because he was one of the few white male Democrats from Texas in Congress. Before being redistricted into the 35th, Doggett was the representative in Congress from Texas’ 25th and 10th Congressional Districts. In 2022, he was redistricted again to run in Texas’ 37th Congressional District, opening the door for Casar’s run. With its current boundaries, the 35th is one of Texas’ most Democratic districts as a product of gerrymandering and runs more than 100 miles from the
eastern side of the state capital of Austin, and slivers south to also encompass the city center of San Antonio. Given the Democratic majority, November’s general election is more of a formality than anything. The district is majority Hispanic with also a considerable Black population — somewhere Casar has always thought he fit, no matter the office he was running for.
PRIVILEGED, BUT A FIGHTER
He’s the son of Mexican immigrants, but doesn’t have the story of economic struggle and farm work that some have, especially in South Texas. Casar had what a growing number of young Hispanics have growing up in the U.S. today — economic privilege. parts of the Houston metro and he attended private school, where he excelled in sports and got good grades. In a profile by the Texas Observer’s Gus Bova, he was described as a “liberal kid, pushing back on classmates who expressed anti-LGBTQ+ views and bothered by the inequality he saw when volunteering at homeless shelters.” That confrontational nature when fighting injustice is something that would come to define Casar’s later dive into community activism in college at the University of Virginia. There, he fought for better wages for university workers.
GREG CASAR, THE LABOR ORGANIZER
When he came back to Austin on an internship in the Summer of 2010, it was with the Workers Defense Project fighting to organize undocumented workers in a state notorious for its anti-union policies in spite of the federal National Labor Relations Act. Fast forward to 2022, and Casar told Bova of his high-reaching labor aspirations as a U.S. representative. “My goal is to be the most pro-labor member of Congress, period,” he told the Texas Observer.
A year after interning, Casar returned for a full-time gig with the Workers Defense Project, where he continued to push the city and its corporate sectors to provide higher wages and more benefits to workers.
AUSTIN’S YOUNGEST CITY COUNCILMEMBER
Casar first ran for Austin City Council in 2014, after the city finally established a district format. Before, its City Council was elected all at-large, giving unfair advantage to the city’s white population and leaving only two spots for a Black and Hispanic councilmember. In an interview with the Texas Tribune not long after his triumph in the March 2022 primary, Casar said his early motivations for running were to make the city fully embrace a progressive agenda. “I wanted us to stop being a faux-gressive city and start being a progressive city,” he told reporter James Barragán. In his first election, Casar ran for the newly-formed District 3, a Hispanic-majority district that included a lot of newcomers to the city. He came in first in a field of eight candidates, but because no one won more than 50% of the vote, Casar moved onto a runoff election against second-place finisher, Laura Pressley. He JULY 27 - AUGUST 3, 2022
PORTADA would also win that race to seal his spot on Austin City Council as its youngest member ever, at 25 years old. For the next six years, Casar would become a major figure in the city, state and country for his efforts on Austin City Council, especially for his battles with the state. Those efforts hit a stride a year after being elected, when Donald Trump rose to become the new U.S. President on the back of a xenophopic campaign that targeted undocumented immigrants, falsely blaming them for the nation’s ills. In Texas, the state legislature worked to pass Senate Bill 4, a measure that required cooperation between county jails and ICE, and allowed police officers to demand immigration documentation. It was the opposite of what cities like Philadelphia could do in Democratically-run Pennsylvania in establishing itself as a sanctuary city. To combat the pending bill’s passage, Casar and 23 other protestors occupied the annex of the governor’s office for eight hours and were eventually arrested. His words in the aftermath of the protest: “This was not so hard. We can do so much more.” Senate Bill 4 was eventually passed and signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, but it wouldn’t be the last time Casar would force action from him. Other issues Casar went to war with the state over include requiring paid sick leave in Austin, taking funding from the police budget and allocating it for more mental health resources and responses to crises, and decriminalizing encampments for the homeless in the city. All were also eventually shot down at the state level, but Casar showed his mettle and it set him up for the major success he saw in March 2022.
When he announced his congressional run in November 2021, Casar would eventually be grouped with a trio of progressive candidates attempting to change the face of Texas politics. The other two were immigration lawyer Jessica Cisneros, running against the Laredo Democratic machine that is Rep. Henry Cuellar in Texas’ 28th Congressional District, and former Texas State Rep. Jasmine Crockett running to replace Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson in the 30th Congressional District. Casar was the only of the three to avoid a runoff election. On the campaign trail, not only would he get endorsements from progressive giants like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, but he would also share the stage (alongside Cisneros) with the heir apparent to the progressive movement in Ocasio-Cortez. When his seat is solidified in November, so will Casar’s seat alongside her in the fabled squad, which grows in number with each passing election cycle.
ORGANIZING TEXAS
When discussing his success with Barragán, he pointed to creating a progressive bloc at the start of his campaign. His past work not only tapped him into networks in Austin, but also San Antonio, and the in-between areas part of Comal, Hays and Caldwell counties. “We really brought together the full coalition of progressive voices and organizations from across this district, and I worked alongside organizations in this district to build that neighborhood infrastructure, that church-based infrastructure, that union-based infrastructure that we could then just turn on for this race,” said Casar. Even though it’s Texas, that progressive voice is there in droves, and Casar is evidence. He knows it too, and one of his favorite campaign lines speaks to that truth maybe more than any candidate before him. “Texas, I don’t think is a red state. I think it’s an underorganized state,” he told Barragán.

A RISING PROGRESSIVE STAR?
The issues at the forefront of Casar’s Congressional run beyond the labor aspirations are both as ambitious as they come for a progressive Democrat and responsive to the current political moment in the U.S. Casar is a proponent of a Green New Deal, pushed by fellow progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, expanded voting rights, more common sense gun legislation, and protected abortion rights, to name a few of the issues. JULY 27 - AUGUST 3, 2022

PORTADA A ORGANIZAR TEXAS
Casar took the stage with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the campaign trail and got major endorsements from other progressive juggernauts.

REASONS TO VOTE REPUBLICAN
Ishmael Reed says that in the United States “part of the Latino heritage community seems attracted to Trump’s strongman image, when he represents the historical racism that Mexicans, blacks and Asians have suffered”. He warns that an Anglo-centric upbringing remains. “Unlike the Anglo-centric East, the West is bilingual and multicultural. Hispanic literature, for example, dates back to 1610 [...], many Hispanic students and their parents are unaware of that heritage [...] they are unaware of the history of atrocities committed against the Chinese since the California Gold Rush, which includes the largest mass lynching in U.S. history [...]. Although President Biden would not have won without the support of Black men and Latina women, in 2020, 18 % of Black men preferred Trump. [...] These Black and Hispanic men, 39 % of Trump’s electorate in 2020, must be unfamiliar with the performance of authoritarian regimes. [...] lured by Trump’s false strongman pose, they are unaware that under Herbert Hoover administration a million Hispanics were deported [...]”.

IT WAS GOING TO BE A MEETING OF TWO LOSERS
Analyst Jorge Lanata analyzed the cancellation of the meeting between Joe Biden and Alberto Fernández, President of Argentina, due to the U.S. President’s COVID-19 contagion. “The meeting that was planned for two years ended in nothing. The meeting [...] is marked by bad luck. [...] In any case it was going to be a meeting between two losers: in the United States the majority analyzes a future triumph of Donald Trump, and the reelection of Alberto became a joke. [...] The Government wanted to bring three topics to the meeting: energy, food and International Monetary Fund (IMF). [...] ‘For us, a meeting with Biden is nothingness. He is a president without power and with no chances of reelection’, says to Clarín the head of an American investment fund. ‘It has no relevance. The fact that Biden could get Alberto’s support so that the IMF will give him one more term to meet his goals does not change anyone’s investment decision’. Finally, the long-awaited Biden-Fernandez meeting will not take place. It would have been a meeting between two memes”.
THE COST OF STUBBORNNESS
Antonio Rosas-Landa analyzed the situation of Mexican products in the United States and the risks they run. He points out: “Every time I go to the supermarket it is a matter of pride to see the diversification of Mexican products available to the U.S. consumer. The classic avocados, tomatoes, asparagus, antioxidant-rich fruits [...] even the very Mexican nopal cactus can be purchased in organic and regular versions [...]. Unfortunately, the success of Mexican agricultural products could be affected by the possible imposition of taxes on these and other high value-added products that sell very well in the United States. The reason for this is the Mexican President’s stubbornness to impose energy policies that violate the country’s commitments to its trading partners, the United States and Canada, in the North American Free Trade Agreement. His failed philosophy attempts to return market dominance in the electricity and oil industries to inefficient public entities, decapitalized and, therefore, incapable of supplying the country’s needs”.
ABC PARAGUAY
SIGNIFICANTLY CORRUPT
The editorial of this Paraguayan media concerns the decision of the United States against former President Horacio Cartes. It points out that in the accusation of being “significantly corrupt”, the American ambassador “used two devastating accusations [...]. The aggravating factor is that [...] one of them occurred in the exercise of the very presidential investiture of Paraguay, with the frustration of an investigation process of transnational crime, and the other more recently: ‘ties with terrorist organizations’. [...] It is monumentally humiliating that from abroad they consider there is too much relevant information to target a former president of the Republic who, in his own country, does not even have an open prosecutor’s file with his name. It is an unappealable failure, the failure of our institutions, especially the failure of the Office of the Attorney General, which represents the defense of our society and its patrimony. It is the failure of the institutions in charge of ensuring the correct application of justice [...] When we became a failed State, without authority or courage to prosecute the crimes that are permeating us?”

few years after she was born, Laura Baeza (Campeche, Mexico, 1988) moved with her family to a town in Veracruz, where she learned to read, imagine and write “little stories”, although she did not yet know what a story was or that literature existed. “The idea of becoming a writer came to me at the age of 12, after reading Michael Ende (The Neverending Story), and that’s how I continued until today”, explained Baeza, who published her first novel, Niebla ardiente (Alfaguara, 2021), a little less than a year ago. Winner of the Julio Torri National Short Story Prize with Ensayo de orquesta (FETA, 2017) and the Gerardo Cornejo National Narrative Prize with Época de cerezos, Baeza is considered one of Mexico’s literary promises. Her next book of short stories, Una grieta en la noche, will be released in October, with Spanish publisher Páginas de Espuma. Niebla ardiente begins with the story of Esther, a young Mexican girl whose childhood and youth memories are marked by the mental illness of her sister Irene, who, despite the care she receives, ends up escaping from the center where she was placed. She is victim of forced disappearance, a current crime in Mexico, and found dead in a ditch at the age of 21. To reorganize her life and escape the pain and guilt, Esther goes to study to Barcelona. But she realizes that forgetting a loved one is not easy. How can it be that while watching the Mexican news she sees her sister dead in the middle of a riot in the state of Hidalgo?
A HEALING PROCESS
“Unfortunately, the mourning for the disappearance of a loved one never ends”, Baeza explained in an interview for AL DÍA. “A mourning for death hurts, it is a process that involves resignation and healing, but a mourning for a disappeared person does not end, it is walking in limbo one day after another”. To write the book, she spent four years researching forced disappearances. According to data from the National Search Commission (CNB), the number of missing people in Mexico is close to 91,000. The author, like the lead, spent some time studying in Barcelona. “I felt limited and unsatisfied in my context; I wanted to continue studying, and I found a postgraduate degree in Communication, Journalism and Humanities, but I quit because I ran out of money and there was no way to continue”, Baeza said. The frustration she felt made her learn to see the world and literature in a different way, “in the experiential and interesting way

Despite having certain parallels with his personal and family life, Niebla ardiente is not autobiographical, but it helped her to reflect on the importance of family and how the loss of a loved one impacts. In the words of Baeza, “Family is a subject that interests me because it is a structure which you can survive and, in the best scenario, enjoy. I have enjoyed mine. I am also interested in exploring the complex relationships between siblings, because if those between parents and children are difficult, between siblings there is a greater degree of complexity”. To this must be added the fact that she is Mexican. “The family unit is a little more present and marked in Latin contexts by historical issues. We come from a Judeo-Christian tradition, so our conditions are different and, at least in Mexico, the figure of family seems to be carved in rock”, she says.
A FEMININE VOICE
Unlike her first published stories, starring mostly men, Baeza has opted for women as leads of her first novel. “Now I feel more in touch with who I am, and I’ve lost my fear of talking about myself and others. When I started writing I felt I had to show toughness, that’s why almost all my characters were male, and I was very wrong about that”, she admits. Although the context of Novela ardiente is linked to Mexico, the reader who dives into its pages, whatever their nationality, “will find a map of the memories and nostalgia of its characters, a search through streets, cities and continents, and the reconstruction of the memory of those who are no longer here or who are somewhere far away”, says Baeza with conviction. JULY 27 - AUGUST 3, 2022

nderstanding and embracing change is one of the most important aspects of successfully running a small business. Everything from consumer or client behaviors, to wants and needs and vendor or supplier management, staying on top of potential changes that can affect your business is critical. However, one of the most important changes to embrace is reinvesting in the business. One of the several ways to do so is through real estate. WSFS provides some ways reinvesting in your business through real estate can increase profitability and strengthen your finances. One way is that it establishes cost certainty, as purchasing property for your business allows you to not have to deal with rising lease costs. Purchasing your own property with a commercial real estate loan for small businesses provides cost certainty with fixed terms, rates and fees. These loans also help secure financing for the acquisition of a building, the refinancing of an existing commercial property, or for making improvements to existing property. Reinvesting in your business can also generate revenue, such as allowing the opportunity to lease part of the space or having a residential tenant. For those who already own property for their business, reinvesting can also help build equity and add long term value to your business.

ENGLISH José Fernandez, entrepreneur and founder of Atilio’s Construction, was heavily aided by WSFS. After starting his company, Fernandez knew he needed financial support to help grow his business. Within a year of opening a small business banking account with WSFS, Fernandez was able to purchase his first new vehicle. By year two, he managed to take his business to the next level by applying for and obtaining a line of credit. This helped Fernandez take on larger, more valuable projects, and his company is now being booked for projects six months in advance and growing from $20,000-$30,000 jobs to $500,000 full construction projects. Fernandez’s relationship with WSFS has
simply grown more and more over the years, beyond Atilio’s Construction. “I now have four loans and a line of credit through WSFS between Atilio’s and personal financing, including a second truck, a Jeep and I’m soon settling on a property that I’m going to fix up for investment,” Fernandez said in a 2021 WSFS Bank article. “I’m a minority small business owner who needed a financial partner who believed in me. I needed someone by my side during the pandemic when times were tough. I needed someone to come on this journey with me to grow into a successful businessperson. WSFS had my back. They never saw me as anyone but José from Atilio’s Construction, our friend and partner, and that approach is exactly what I needed,” he continued.
WSFS me apoyó.

By | Por: JENSEN TOUSSAINT | AL DÍA News Staff Writer ENGLISH Some of the community work involves the launch of its Apprenticeship Network, engagement with the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia, its work with the Recharge and Recovery Philadelphia, and many other corporate citizenship initiatives with organizations like Graduate Philadelphia, Junior Achievement, Back on My Feet and Compass. The third responsibility is engaging with its various clients, which includes Comcast and PECO. Through those collaborations, Accenture is able to work hand-in-hand with other employers on like-minded endeavors and initiatives. “The intersection of those three elements — our people, our community and our clients — is my responsibility to stitch those things together in the Philadelphia area.” He added his vision is “making sure that people feel connected, that people have an opportunity to be their full selves, creating spaces where we cultivate creativity and innovation, and also having an eye toward how we not only give back in the community, but celebrate shared successes around giving back to the community.”
A MORE HOLISTIC VIEW ON TALENT
In 2016, Accenture launched a new apprenticeship program to create opportunities for underserved and underrepresented communities to gain access to jobs. Beyond that, it also helped create a new pathway for employment.
“We made a commitment, Accenture, as an organization to remove some of the barriers around how we looked at talent and attracted talent to the organization,” said Rambo. He noted that one of ways Accenture has done so is by removing the four-year degree requirement for entry-level positions. “That was one of the first steps that we took. But as we thought about how we would go about looking at other pipelines for talent, the apprenticeship network became very vital for us as an organization,” Rambo added. The pandemic has amplified many of the challenges that have existed in the workforce, particularly as it pertains to disparities in certain communities. Accenture’s approach, Rambo said, has been to create resiliency within that workforce, upskill talent and create new pathways toward employment opportunities. The apprenticeship program has grown over the years, in large part due to Accenture’s engagement with organizations that has helped identify the city’s talent pipeline. “There are a number of organizations that we saw as an untapped pool of talents that would fit very nicely into our aspirations around creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce that enabled a nontraditional pipeline of talent to come into the mix,” Rambo said. As the apprenticeship program continued to show its worth, Accenture made a commitment to fill 20% of its entry-level roles with its apprentices. “We see it as a tremendous opportunity for us to give back to the community,” said Rambo.

Sierra went to school for computer science, but wanted something where she could be more directly helping people. “I’ve always been passionate about it,” Sierra said. “Being in the PFD is like the highest form of being able to help because I’ll be doing it every day,” she added. When Sierra was asked how she felt about working in a male-dominated field, she said it was hard, especially when proving people wrong. “Every step of the way, you have to prove people wrong... MORE HISPANIC REPRESENTATION
This year’s ceremony marked the graduation of Firefighter/EMT Class 199 and Paramedic Class 40. This year saw five women graduate. They were all Hispanic, and almost half the class was Hispanic. The Philadelphia Fire Department has said in the past that they want more multicultural diversity. “I think that inclusion and diversity is critical in any successful organization, especially in emergency services. Philadelphia is so diverse and rich in culture. It will benefit our organization to represent and include everyone to better serve our customers during critical times,” Ortiz said.

ALL THAT, BUT NO LAW?
In a response to the investigation committee given to WHYY, Krasner’s Officer Spokesperson Jane Roh pointed to the influence of the NRA and House Republicans’ “complicity in gun violence due to their enabling of unrestricted flooding of firearms into every county in PA.” That could be curbed by some state legislation, but Republicans have never budged on any effort. A lawsuit from the city is also heading to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in an effort to override preemption.

Based on the health and safety recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ("CDC") and Pennsylvania Department of Health ("Department of Health") due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the scheduled sale shall be conducted virtually at Bid4Assets.com ("Bid4Assets"). 2. YOU MUST BE EIGHTEEN (18) YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER TO BID. 3. All bidders must complete the Bid4Assets on-line registration process to participate in the auction ("Auction"). All bidders must submit a Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) deposit ("Deposit") plus a Thirty-Five Dollars ($35.00) non-refundable processing fee to Bid4Assets before the start of the Auction. Such single Deposit shall be associated with the Auction held as of this date ("Auction Date") and shall allow a bidder to bid on all of the properties that are listed on the Auction Date. The Deposit will be applied to the 10% down payment required for all purchased properties. If the Deposit exceeds the 10% down payment required for all purchased properties, the excess will be applied towards the total balance due. If the 10% down payment required for all purchased properties is greater than the $5,000.00 Deposit, the balance due to reach the 10% down payment amount is due by 5:00PM on the next business day after the auction date. 4. All properties are sold "AS IS" with NO expressed or implied warranties or guarantees whatsoever. The Sheriff and Bid4Assets shall not be liable as a result of any cause whatsoever for any loss or damage to the properties sold. In anticipation of participating in the Auction and purchasing a property, the bidder assumes all responsibility for due diligence. The plaintiff’s attorney shall submit the plaintiff’s upset price ("Upset Price") to Bid4Assets, via the attorney online portal, at least one (1) hour prior to the start of the Auction. The Upset Price is the least amount the plaintiff will accept for a property. The Sheriff’s costs will be added to the Upset Price to determine the reserve price for the auction. The reserve price is the minimum dollar amount the Sheriff will accept for the sale to go to a third-party bidder. Bidders will not know what the reserve price is, but they will see when the reserve price has been met. 6. The sale of the property will not be stopped unless The Sheriff’s Office is contacted by the Attorney on the Writ, by Court Order or at the discretion of the Sheriff.

7. If the reserve price is met, the highest bidder shall be the purchaser. By close of business the next business day after the auction, the purchaser is responsible for 10% of the purchase price for each property purchased plus a buyer’s premium of 1.5% of the total purchase price of each property purchased. The purchaser shall pay the balance of 90% of the purchase price for each property purchased plus a $35 processing fee by 5:00PM EST on the fifteenth (15th) calendar day following the Auction Date unless that day falls on a holiday or weekend day, then the balance is due on the next business day by 5:00PM EST. If a bidder wins multiple properties and does not comply with the conditions of sale for each property he is deemed in Default and all of the consequences of a Default will apply. 10. The highest bidder shall be responsible for any and all post sale costs that are imposed by law, which are incurred by the Sheriff. Please be advised that the Realty Transfer Taxes have been calculated and included in the bid amounts. 11. On any auction that results in a third-party sale, if the winning bidder defaults, the Sheriff’s Office, may at its sole discretion extend an offer to the second highest bidder in good standing through Bid4Assets’ “Bidder on Deck” program. The bidder on deck will be contacted in the event of a Default two (2) days after the auction. The Bidder on Deck will have Twenty-Four (24) Hours to accept the offer. If the second bidder accepts this offer, they shall owe the total balance due on the fifteenth (15th) calendar day from the date the winning bid is accepted. If the payment due date falls on a holiday or weekend day, then the balance is due on the next business day by 5:00PM EST. THE REPUBLICAN LATINO SHIFT
The country’s economic crisis seems to be at the center of the change of shore among Latino voters. How real is it?

S
ince the 2020 election, many who stay close to the U.S. Latino political sphere have spoken of a great shift in Latino voters that is underway. In that election, analysts pointed to losses of Latino support for President Joe Biden among Cuban and Venezuelan populations in South Florida, and among the Mexican-American populations of South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley. When discussing South Florida’s election results, the impact of Republican disinformation campaigns directed at Latino voters cannot be overstated. Whether it was on social media, radio, television or print, Biden and the wider Democratic Party were painted as socialists, taking many Cubans and Venezuelans back to their home countries under Fidel Castro or Hugo Chavez. For Mexican-Americans along the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas, they are often caught in the volatile rhetoric that surrounds the influx of immigrants into the U.S. Republicans have also been hammering the narrative of a border crisis ever since Biden entered office. But it’s not the border narrative, or the wild accusations of socialism that have President Biden’s Latino approval rating at a cool 26% per a recent Quinnipiac Poll. It is the economy. To put it bluntly, the economy, which is still recovering from a COVID pandemic that’s entering yet another wave of infections — and just infected Biden — is still experiencing higher than normal inflation, as seen at grocery stores and gas stations across the country. It’s coming down, but not fast enough. An uncertain War in Ukraine can also be added to the list of economic disruptors on a global scale. Contrary to how the Democratic Party has viewed Latinos in the past, they are not a monolith. They are major economic engines in this country, the most entrepreneurial of any demographic, and that will only continue to grow far into the U.S.’s future. Biden’s seeming slow-to-act approach on the economy is not winning him any fans from the aforementioned group. He can blame Republicans in Congress for grandstanding, but that doesn’t get anything done.

ENGLISH Add the inflation and economic woes to Dr. Jill Biden’s words at the latest UnidosUS Annual Conference and those of the campaign of Rep. Vicente González regarding his opponent, Rep. Mayra Flores in South Texas, and it’s a rough outlook even before looking at the history of success for presidents’ parties in midterm elections. However, just because Democrats are fumbling the bag at the moment, does not mean Republicans are there to pick it up. As senior editor Ronald Brownstein writes in a recent column in The Atlantic on the subject of the Latino shift right, the Republican Party’s own shift even further right on issues like abortion and guns have also pushed Latinos away. On the former issue, a recent study from the Public Religion Research Institute found that two-thirds – a major majority — of Latino Catholics think abortion should be legal in all or most circumstances. That flies in the face of both the assumption that Catholicism would rule all U.S. Latino thoughts on social policy and Republican efforts in more than half of U.S. states to ban the practice completely. When it comes to guns, Brownstein spoke to Tory Gavito, the president of Way to Win, a group that mobilizes support for candidates in communities of color, who cited the Uvalde, Texas massacre at Robb Elementary School “a massive flashpoint for Latino communities across the country” on gun control. In that tragedy, all but one of the 19 elementary school students killed were Latino. A Pew poll from 2021 also found that two-thirds of Latinos, and three-fifths of those without a college degree, believe gun laws should be made more strict in the U.S. Even more showed opposition to a popular Republican policy of not requiring a permit to carry a concealed firearm. Now guns and abortion are not everything when it comes to winning elections, but to try to shift Latinos as a whole from one party to another based on assumptions made about the demographic as a whole, is just more tokenizing, no matter the party.
