a salud fiscal de Pensilvania tiene pronóstico reservado. Todo por cuenta de que quienes deben cuidarla -la Asamblea General y el Gobernador- no se ponen de acuerdo en la mejor manera de salir del impasse sin crear mayores traumatismos en las ya asfixiadas arcas del Estado. Al déficit de 2.2 mil millones de dólares en el presupuesto estatal que obligó al gobernador Tom Wolf a retrasar los pagos por $1.7 mil millones en Medicaid y pensiones a mediados del mes pasado, se sumó el retraso que completa más de 100 días en la aprobación del presupuesto para el año fiscal 2017-2018, que se supo-

nía debía estar listo el 30 de junio. Mientras en la Cámara de Representantes unos abogan por tomar préstamos de fondos estatales como el STIP (Short-Term Investment Program) para pagar la deuda -el típico “abrir un hueco aquí para tapar otro allá”-, otros proponen crear más impuestos en industrias que hasta ahora han sido intocables en el estado. En medio de este caos, salió a relucir Joseph Torsella, el tesorero del Estado, quien dejó a más de un legislador republicano con la boca abierta en septiembre cuando se negó a tocar los fondos estatales de inversión con que los republicanos pretendían evitar el retraso en el pago de las deudas. Para colmo de males, el pasado 2 de octubre la calificadora crediticia Standard & Poors emitió concepto negativo sobre la capacidad de pago del Estado, bajando su calificación de AA- a A+, lo cual deja muy mal parada a Pensilvania a la hora de pedir préstamos a entidades bancarias. Hoy mucha gente

-sobre todo del sector de la educación, pensionados y organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro que dependen de fondos públicos- se encuentran comiéndose las uñas ante lo que parece un inminente colapso de la economía estatal. AL DÍA News habló con Joseph Torsella, el hombre que tiene las llaves de la caja fuerte, para entender por qué llegamos hasta este punto, qué puede pasar de no hallarse una solución rápida y, en su concepto, qué es lo que precisamente debe hacerse para salir de este callejón sin salida. ¿Cuál es su diagnóstico sobre la salud financiera de Pensilvania? Si fuera un médico, le diría que el paciente no se encuentra bien. Tenemos demasiadas dificultades que estamos ignorando. [Por un lado] como Estado, hemos fallado sistemáticamente en encontrarle una solución a lo que ha sido un desequilibrio estructural entre el gasto y el ingreso públicos. Acabamos de descender por sexta vez consecutiva en la categoría crediticia [de Standard & Poors]. Pero lo más lamentable es lo familiar que se ha vuelto el lenguaje en las últimas cinco advertencias de degradación crediticia -[y que habla]- de una historia aprobando presupuestos de manera tardía sin lograr reconciliar en una sola estructura nuestros gastos y nuestros ingresos. Como Estado, estamos teniendo un bajo ren-


dimiento. Sí, podemos estar creando empleos, pero lo estamos haciendo a una tasa menor que nuestros vecinos. Nuestros salarios han aumentado en 1.5% mientras que en estados vecinos ese crecimiento es de hasta el 3%. Por cierto, el aumento en Delaware es del 11%. Creo que aunque hay razones para tener esperanzas, estamos dejando atrás mucho de nuestro potencial. Lo que propongo es que pensemos en la mejor manera de apalancar Pensilvania para construir un futuro más próspero para todos. Pero para poder superar este atolladero, primero tenemos que entender cómo fue que llegamos a este aparente callejón sin salida. Mire, yo soy el custodio de los fondos generales, que es como una cuenta de cheques del Estado y lo que he visto es que en los últimos 10 años, el saldo a favor ha ido disminuyendo cada año mientras que la necesidad de endeudamiento para cubrir gastos ha crecido incluso cada vez más temprano. En nuestra última proyección, al terminar este ciclo presupuestario, dijimos que estábamos ante un periodo en el que Pensilvania pasó tres tercios del año necesitando plata prestada para pagar sus deudas y eso se debe porque he-

mos ignorado por mucho tiempo un problema que hoy es de $2.2 mil millones de déficit. Decir que “debemos recortar gastos o recaudar más impuestos” es un argumento razonable, pero cuando ambas cámaras del legislativo votan sobre un acuerdo bipartidista por un presupuesto y dicen que “queremos gastar esta cantidad de dinero” para después decir que “no vamos a pagar por ello”, eso nos deja en una situación sin salida. El punto de partida es -y sé que a nadie le gusta oír esto- aumentar ingresos y tomar algunas decisiones difíciles de manera rápida. ¿Cuáles son esas “decisiones difíciles”? Primero déjeme dejar claro que no pretendo ser el sexto negociador entre la Cámara de Representantes, el Senado y el Gobernador. Ahora, partiendo de lo que he dicho, creo que tenemos una tarea pendiente hace mucho tiempo: gravar la extracción de gas en Pensilvania, somos el único estado que no lo hace. El Senado aprobó una serie de medidas que a nadie le gusta, pero que aumenta en 600 millones los ingresos recurrentes en las arcas estatales.

Yesid Vargas/AL DÍA News Mi trabajo no consiste en tomar una posición [en el debate], pero sí en recomendar que es hora de superarlo. Lo vergonzoso es que, por cuenta de esto, estamos dejando de un lado temas importantes. Necesitamos hacer un mejor trabajo para que nuestros niños y adultos tengan acceso a una mejor educación. Deberíamos estar discutiendo sobre el estado de nuestra infraestructura, de nuestras inversiones y de nuestro capital humano. Pero por cada día que gastemos discutiendo cómo pagar la deuda este año, es un día menos que empleamos para discutir sobre cómo hacer de Pensilvania un estado donde la gente quiera vivir durante los próximos 10 años. Usted dice que no quiere ser “el sexto negociador” en el debate presupuestal, pero la verdad es que su voz hace rato hace parte de la discusión. Por ello, y por su negativa de prestar dinero de fondos de inversión, varios legisladores lo han criticado. ¿Cómo recibe esas críticas? Aunque preferiría que todo el mundo en la Asamblea General estuviera de acuerdo conmigo, desde el momento que aspiré al cargo sabía que en algún momento tendría que tomar decisiones impopulares. Desde la primavera advertí sobre que desde muy temprano este año enfrentaríamos una situación sin precedentes: tendríamos un posi-

ción negativa en los flujos de caja en los fondos públicos. La pregunta que enfrenté el 15 de septiembre fue -después de meses de advertencia- si debíamos usar fondos de inversiones para prestarle dinero al Estado y así evitar terminar el trabajo presupuestario. Es razonable decir que “una inversión es prudente cuando los gastos son coherentes con los ingresos”. Pero la cuestión es si prestarle o no a una entidad que literalmente no puede explicar cómo podría pagar la deuda porque tiene una hueco fiscal de 2,2 mil millones de dólares. La respuesta a esa pregunta, en mi opinión, es no. La cuestión es si al hacer estos préstamos estaríamos facilitando a largo plazo la buena toma de decisiones o simplemente estaríamos facilitando la evasión de responsabilidades. La verdadera cuestión es que mi obligación es ser un inversor prudente del dinero público. El porte de armas en Estados Unidos: ¿Derecho o Epidemia?

Un estudio realizado por el Departamento de Centros de Salud y Servicios Humanos para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades, publicado en 2003, encontró que las prohibiciones y los controles legales sobre el porte de armas no son mecanismos directos para la reducción de la violencia y de los casos de uso indiscriminado de armas de fuego. Lo que implica que el abordaje debe ser desde múltiples frentes (educativo, legal, social) para que la prohibición del porte de armas tenga un efecto real en la sociedad civil. A resultados similares llegó el informe de la National Academies of Sciences Engineering Medicine (Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review) en el 2005, asegurando que el enfoque debe ser más diverso, con especial énfasis en las tasas de suicidio y su relación con el porte legal de armas. Según los datos publicados por los Centros de Control de Enfermedades y Prevención (CDC), entre 1999 y el 2013, en Estados Unidos hubo un total de 464.033 muertes por armas de fuego, de

En un año cualquiera los estadounidenses tienen 2.000 veces más probabilidades de ser asesinados por otros estadounidenses armados que por un terrorista yihadista.

oco sabían las personas congregadas en el Route 91 Music Festival en Las Vegas sobre lo fácil que había sido para un jubilado americano acceder a decenas de armas en una tienda local. Y es que, según la Segunda Enmienda, ese hombre tan sólo ejercía su derecho “a poseer y portar armas”. La Carta de Derechos estadounidense, documento que contiene las primeras diez enmiendas de la Constitución de Estados Unidos aprobadas el 15 de diciembre de 1791, fue redactada para “defender los principios básicos de la libertad humana”, contemplando algunas libertades personales y limitando el poder del gobierno en los procesos judiciales. “Siendo necesaria una milicia bien ordenada para la seguridad de un Estado libre, el derecho del pueblo a poseer y portar armas no será infringido”, reza el mandato aprobado por los Estados. Pero este documento fue redactado antes de que las armas semiautomáticas fueran inventadas, cuando las milicias civiles tan sólo podían disparar una ronda de balas por minuto y cuyas prioridades no incluían el asesinato masivo de cientos de personas indefensas, bajo premisa alguna. La necesidad de reformar estos estatutos históricos es, ahora más que nunca, una urgencia. Para ello, el debate parte de identificar las partes involucradas: el ciudadano común, que quien se reserva el derecho a practicar deportes que incluyen armas de fuego; la industria manufacturera de armas, que frecuentemente hace oídos sordos al riesgo que implica el arma 8 / OCTUBRE 11 - 18., 2017 / ALDÍAnews.com

correcta en las manos equivocadas; y el gobierno estadounidense, que debe hacer un balance entre ambos. Organizaciones como la Asociación Nacional del Rifle (NRA, por sus sigla en inglés), defienden el derecho a poseer armas tanto para la defensa personal como para actividades recreativas.

¿DEFENDERSE DE QUIÉN?

Según el análisis de Ron Isana para CNBC, alrededor del 32 por ciento de los estadounidenses poseen armas, de los cuales la mayoría llegan a poseer hasta ocho ejemplares, y de los cuales menos de la mitad forman parte de las Fuerzas Armadas. La gran mayoría de ellos no están evaluados por un médico competente que descarte la inestabilidad mental, ni tampoco forman parte de grupos de apoyo o educativos que filtren y modulen el ejercicio del derecho a “defenderse”. En un país con uno de los ejércitos más poderosos del mundo, con instituciones y agencias de defensa de reputación mundial, la seguridad civil debería darse por sentada, y la posibilidad de poder tomarse la justicia en manos propias, es sencillamente paradójica. El presidente John F. Kennedy, el senador Robert Kennedy y activistas afroamericanos como Malcolm X y Martin Luther King Jr. son sólo algunos nombres reconocidos que se suman a una larga lista de víctimas por el uso indiscriminado de las armas de fuego en Estados Unidos. Y los mecanismos para solucionarlo aún no

Como explica CNN, “en un año cualquiera los estadounidenses tienen 2.000 veces más probabilidades de ser asesinados por otros estadounidenses armados que por un terrorista yihadista”. El medio periodístico expone que, “desde el 11 de septiembre de 2001, 95 estadounidenses han sido asesinados por terroristas yihadistas”, cuando tan sólo entre las masacres de Las Vegas, Orlando y San Bernardino, más de 120 personas fallecieron. Según Shannon Watts, fundadora de Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, el ataque del domingo en Las Vegas es el octavo en lo que va de año, y el número 162 desde el 2009. En su columna para el diario The Guardian, Watts asegura que “el 90% de los estadounidenses apoya las políticas de seguridad armamentísticas”; sin embargo, “nuestras leyes reflejan las posiciones extremas de la industria de armas”. Hacer la suma no es difícil: un gobierno liderado por un empresario, respaldado por el partido Republicano y cuyo eslogan es “America First” (Estados Unidos primero), no facilitará las cosas para la regulación del porte de armas, ni siquiera por una masacre como la de Las Vegas. n

on mucho de déspota y nada de ilustrado, el presidente Donald Trump está convencido, sin embargo, de ser un regalo de Dios al mundo. Eso ya lo sabíamos todos, por supuesto, así que tampoco fue sorpresa para nadie que su visita a Puerto Rico fuera un total desastre. El doctor Daniel V. Schidlow, decano de la Escuela de Medicina de Drexel University y especialista en enfermedades pulmonares, es uno de los latinos más prominentes de Filadelfia. Por eso AL DÍA lo escogió como uno de los arquetipos de la herencia hispana de 2017. nhalar, exhalar. Al doctor Daniel V. Schidlow siempre le ha interesado el poder de la respiración profunda; el poder de la respiración acompasada de un niño tras un exitoso trasplante pulmonar, el poder de ajustar la respiración entre unos y otros después de encontrar los puntos de unión más allá de nuestra etnia o clase social, o el poder de tener capacidad pulmonar suficiente para cantar ópera en el pasillo junto a pacientes que necesitan tratamiento. Hoy en día, el doctor Schidlow, como decano

de la Facultad de Medicina y vicepresidente senior de Asuntos Médicos de Drexel University, respira con mayor facilidad que cuando era un inmigrante chileno recién llegado atendiendo a sus primeros pacientes en el Bronx, y ya no digamos que cuando era un joven graduado intentando trabajar en el Santiago de Chile de los 70, en medio de una complicada situación política y social de entonces. El camino hacia la estabilidad profesional le ha llevado varias décadas, pero Daniel se lo ha tomado como una obligación heredada de sus ancestros. Él mismo se considera el “típico producto” de varias oleadas de inmigrantes que llegaron a Estados Unidos. Sus padres, judíos, huyeron de la Alemania nazi en 1939, y terminaron mudándose a La Paz, en Bolivia, junto a sus dos hermanos mayores (él aún no había nacido). También se mudaron a La Paz sus abue-

En La Paz, sin embargo, los Schidlow se encontraron que debido a la altura a la que se encuentra la ciudad, era muy difícil respirar, así que tuvieron que ponerse a buscar otro lugar donde no enfermasen. Terminaron en Santiago de Chile, donde nació Daniel. Para Daniel, igual que para sus compañeros chilenos, convertirse en adulto implicaba enfocarse en una carrera muy específica. Igual que en muchos países latinoamericanos, después de graduarse de la secundaria, los jóvenes no tenían tiempo para tomarse un tiempo de reflexión o para estudiar alguna carrera artística. Con 17 años, Daniel ya llevaba puesta la bata blanca de estudiante de Medicina.

ESTUDIANTE EN TIEMPOS DE ALLENDE

La vida no le dio a Daniel la oportunidad de tomarse un respiro después de siete años de estudios intensivos, residencia y prácticas. Obtuvo su diploma en medio de un periodo de caos político bajo el mandato de Salvador Allende. En 1972, año de su graduación y de su primer empleo en Medicina Interna, empezaron las huelgas de doctores, manifestaciones y enfrentamientos con las fuerzas armadas, y mantener una posición neutral y poder ir a trabajar por mero “deber ético” se convirtió en una tarea casi imposible. “Si te unías a la huelga, te consideraban un “momio”, una momia, así era como llamaban a los de derechas. Si ibas a trabajar, te consideraban un comunista, o un radical. Eras definido externamente por lo que hacías”, explica Daniel. En 1973, Daniel empezó a trabajar en un hospital pediátrico, ya que siempre le gustó trabajar con niños. Ayudar a los niños han sido su gran pasión, especialmente los niños con enfermedades crónicas. Decidió especializarse en enfermedades pulmonares, como la fibrosis cística. El 10 de septiembre de 1973 -llámenlo destino, intervención divina o suerte-, justo un día antes del golpe de estado de Pinochet, Daniel renunció a su puesto en el hospital. “Ha sido un año prácticamente perdido para mí”, se justificó ante la junta del departamento, que era pro-Pinochet. “Con tanto caos, huelgas, y la gente hablando de política todo el tiempo, cuando tendría que estar hablando de medicina. Quiero marcharme a los Estados Unidos para formarme como académico pediatra, y regresar después”. En el 9/11 chileno, la junta volvió a convocarle para intentar convencerle de que se quedara, dado que las circunstancias “habían mejorado”. Pero Daniel ya había tomado una decisión: se iba a Nueva York, a la tierra a las que siguen llegando las “multitudes amontonadas anhelando respirar libremente”.

de un poema de Emma Lazarus que se materializó más tarde en la Estatua de la Libertad. En ese barrio, ser judío e hispano al mismo tiempo era más bien un plus: “Al llegar a Estados Unidos me sentí liberado, porque vi la oportunidad. Solo tenías que hacer lo que tenías que hacer. Nunca sentí que tuviera obstáculos. Siempre digo que llevo el espíritu inmigrante dentro de mí. ¿Alguien me ve mal? Le conquistaré, o le demostraré que se equivoca. Ganaré”. Su espíritu inmigrante le ayudó a desarrollar la habilidad de ser “socialmente diestro”, de poder adaptarse a diferentes comunidades y, básicamente, a convencer a la gente de su capacidad de aprendizaje y determinación para creerse dueño de uno mismo. Una de las habilidades que se atribuye a su facilidad para entenderse con la gente es el hecho de ser multilingüe: no solo habla inglés y español, sino también alemán, portugués, italiano, francés

y Hebreo. “Ah, y también sé insultar en otros seis idiomas”, bromea. Más tarde recuerda su primera visita a Chile, en 1981: Daniel y su esposa quedaron en shock, al hallar una sociedad politizada y las calles prácticamente sitiadas por el ejército. A medida que su interés en medicina pediátrica pulmonar crecía, Daniel decidió mudarse con su familia a un lugar donde pudiera investigar y poner en práctica su experiencia en este ámbito: el Hospital Infantil St. Christopher’s, afiliado a Drexel University. Allí, entre 1983 y 1994, se convirtió en el jefe más joven del centro. Y aunque en muchas ocasiones se le ofrecieron puestos mejor remunerados en centros más prestigiosos, Daniel se sintió obligado a permanecer en una comunidad que él considera desatendida, y donde poco a poco ha ido echando raíces personales y profesionales. “Siento profundamente -y no dejo de repetirlo- que mis raíces hispanas son mi activo más

valioso. Siempre he trabajado en barrios y comunidades desfavorecidos. Los hospitales en los que he trabajado están ubicados en vecindarios latinos, siempre me gusta hablar en español con mis pacientes, (y) me encanta poder conectar. Es un placer para mí. En el Bronx, y en en Norte de Filadelfia, puedo conectar con la gente a nivel cultural y lingüístico. Me acuerdo de que en el hospital del Bronx siempre estaba ayudando a traducir o corregir los carteles y avisos”, dice Daniel. El próximo 1 de noviembre de 2017, Daniel celebrará su sexto año como decano de la Facultad de Medicina de Drexel. Un puesto que consiguió y que se merece gracias a su dedicación y pasión por su trabajo desde que se incorporó a la Facultad de Medicina, así como por su innovadora manera de introducir la música en el ámbito académico y profesional. Formado como cantante clásico, siempre pensó que sería tenor hasta que su esposa,

quien es pianista, consiguió que desistiera de esa idea. “Nos peleábamos porque yo decíia que no tenía voz de barítono. Ella me decía que me equivocaba”, confiesa Daniel. Como médico, Daniel tiene muy presente la música. Desde que empezó a trabajar en Estados Unidos, ha estado tarareando canciones a sus pacientes y cantando ópera española e italiana a bebés en unidades de cuidados intensivos neonatales. Como profesor de pediatría, farmacología y fisiología, Daniel a menudo pide a sus alumnos (como si fueran tareas que sirven para exhalar las ansiedades de la escuela de medicina) que escriban “ditties” (jugando a aprender con canciones). Daniel es mucho más de lo que indican sus títulos y cargos profesionales; es el fundador de DuCOM Classical, un grupo de aficionados que reúne a estudiantes de medicina, miembros de la facultad, médicos y enfermeras para cantar juntos. Daniel llegó a este país con pocos recursos, y afirma que está “agradecido hasta el noveno grado” de haber tenido la oportunidad de mejorar, de contribuir en gran medida a la sociedad, y de formar una familia en los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, constantemente repite a sus seis hijos que nunca deben olvidar “de dónde vinieron” y que “el dinero sólo comprará el respeto de los demás, pero no el carácter o la clase”. Su espíritu inmigrante se ha fortificado y crecido a la vez que su vida profesional y personal evolucionaba en los Estados Unidos. Esto le ha llevado a respirar con facilidad, a ser capaz de dar un paso atrás para servir a los demás. Sólo desea que otros inmigrantes en este país tengan el mismo privilegio que él: “El mundo está formado por inmigrantes. Cada país tiene gente que ha llegado de otro lugar. Toda esa gente, cuyos familiares salen de The Mayflower, que mira de soslayo a otros inmigrantes, en realidad está despreciando su propia historia, porque sus ancestros huían de la persecución religiosa, la pobreza o la opresión cuando llegaron a este país. El miedo al otro es muy común entre la gente, y es la raíz de la xenofobia, pero si la gente solo se detuviera un minuto para pensar de dónde viene, entenderían mejor la inmigración”. n ALDÍAnews.com / OCTUBRE 11 - 18, 2017 / 15

odo el mundo ha oído hablar alguna vez de las FARC, Escobar, las guerrillas y el acuerdo de paz impulsado por el actual presidente del país, Juan Manuel Santos, ganador del Premio Nobel de la Paz el año pasado. Sin embargo, para los no-colombianos, las guerrillas siguen siendo un problema complejo y lejano. ¿De dónde salen? ¿Por qué luchan? ¿Se mueven por los intereses de cárteles de narcotraficantes o defienden alguna causa política? En su nuevo libro, “Las Guerrillas en Co-

lombia” (Debate, 2017) el politólogo y escritor colombiano Darío Villamizar hace un repaso completo al surgimiento, desarrollo y proceso final de las organizaciones guerrilleras en Colombia entre 1950 y la actualidad, basándose en un exhaustivo esfuerzo de documentación que le llevó a pasar largas temporadas en EE.UU. “Pasé mucho tiempo investigando documentos desclasificados por el gobierno de EEUU y encontré cosas muy curiosas”, explicó Villamizar en una conferencia en Casa América Barcelona (España) a finales de septiembre. Entre las cosas curiosas que investigó Villamizar, asesor en reincorporación de excombatientes en la ONU y miembro de LASA (Latin America Studies Association) se encuentra, por ejemplo, la muerte del sacerdote Camilo Torres, miembro del grupo guerrillero Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN). En su libro hace un recuento de la vida de Torres, que fue asesi-


CULTURA nado por el ejército en 1966 y todavía se desconoce el lugar donde fue enterrado. En enero de 2016 el presidente Santos dio instrucciones al ELN para que se inicie el proceso de búsqueda y exhumación de sus restos, en un gesto por acelerar el inicio de los diálogos de paz con el grupo guerrillero. Para la elaboración del libro, Villamizar contó con la colaboración del prestigioso periodista norteamericano Jon Lee Anderson, experto en movimientos sociales en Latinoamérica y autor de El Che, una vida revolucionaria, la mejor biografía del Che escrita hasta hoy, según Villamizar. Justamente, Villamizar explica que su intención no es solo llevar a cabo un recuento detallado de más de treinta grupos guerrilleros diferentes, sino vincular a las guerrillas con otros movimientos y contextos sociales, tanto en Latinoamérica como en el resto del mundo, desde la Guerra Fría (donde se cocieron) a la influencia de Cuba o Estados Unidos. “Siempre he querido contar los hechos para los que no tuvieron oportunidad de conocerlos”, explica Villamizar ante un público que ha venido a escucharle, mayoritariamente estudiantes latinoamericanos en Barcelona. Según

el autor, después de más de 30 años de negociaciones de paz, “si algo está floreciendo ahora en Colombia son las memorias”, añade. Y destaca dos libros recién publicados sobre este tema: la novela “No hubo fiesta”, escrita por el exalcalde de Medellín, Alonso Salazar, donde el autor relata las historias de sus amigos de la Universidad de Antioquia y cuenta la vida de militantes de guerrillas, en una época marcada por los paramilitares y las Farc. O “Historia (Privada) de la violencia”, de Otty Patiño, que narra la crisis colombiana de mediados del siglo XX con base en entrevistas a los descendientes de sus protagonistas. “Da una visión del país a través de lo que contaban sus padres en las comidas familiares”, explica Villamizar en referencia al libro de Patiño. Para diferenciarse de otros libros sobre guerrillas publicados hasta hoy, Villamizar dice que “intentó recoger una versión más comple-

ta”, desde el origen de las guerrillas hasta la culminación del proceso de paz, en noviembre del año pasado. Después de analizar a más de 420 grupos guerrilleros en todo el continente, ¿por qué Colombia ha sido el último país en acabar con las guerrillas?, le preguntaron a Villamizar en una entrevista reciente con el diario español ABC. Hay determinados factores, uno de ellos es el geográfico, respondió el autor. “Colombia es un país complejo de regiones, montaña, selva, con dos costas, con una entrada muy fácil hacia el norte del continente por Panamá. Un grupo en la selva es indetectable”, dijo. Por otro lado, Villamizar insiste en destacar en las formas económicas que utilizaban para subsistir, todas ellas ilegales: “Chantaje, secuestro, minería ilegal, tráfico de especies o de maderas, narcotráfico... Economías ilegales que generaban unas rentas a las que tenía acceso la guerrilla en distintas dimensiones. No necesariamente constituían el gran cártel de la cocaína, pero en ciertos eslabones de esa cadena podrían estar o participaron algunos grupos armados”, detalló al diario ABC. Ahora, casi un año después de la firma de la paz, “una de las cosas que más me preocupa de Colombia es el cumplimento del acuerdo”, confesó Villamizar en Barcelona. En primer lugar, porque el presidente Santos tiene una oposición bastante fuerte dentro del Congreso, tiene una oposición de partidos y

expresidentes que permanentemente le están criticando, comentó al diario ABC. Pero, según el reputado politólogo, los dos puntos que generarán más dificultadas a la hora de implementar el acuerdo de paz una vez finalizado el proceso de desarme son, en primer lugar, la transición de la guerrilla a fuerza política, y en segundo lugar, la reintegración social de los guerrilleros. “Hay que ubicar a las FARC como un partido político, no solo como un cartel”, insistió. “Que después su propuesta política sea atractiva ya es cosa suya, pero al menos tienen las herramientas”. Este reto será especialmente complejo para el ELN, ya que tiene una “identidad cultural muy particular, funcionan en consenso, mediante la consulta... cualquier estructura de decisión vertical de partido les romperá”. El segundo reto, conseguir que los guerrilleros vuelvan a integrarse en la vida civil, es aún más complicado. “El excombatiente ha de tener claro que podrá integrarse en la sociedad y tener dinero para alimentar a sus familias, sino volverá a las armas”, dijo. Y eso es muy difícil, porque la sociedad colombiana –la comunidad– no está preparada para garantizar esta reintegración. “Van a encontrarse con un país polarizado, donde el ciudadano corriente los rechaza”, opinó. anta Rita Center, el lugar donde César Chávez realizó su huelga de hambre y la activista Dolores Huerta acuñó la frase “Sí se puede”, se ve amenazado por el constante crecimiento de la ciudad de Phoenix y el avance del aeropuerto Sky Harbor. Lo que antes fuera uno de los barrios latinos más representativos de la ciudad está cercado, pero hay gente que lucha por conservar su herencia e incluso se propone crear un museo en esa edificación. El Santa Rita Center se fundó en 1957 como una iglesia en el barrio conocido como “El Campito” al sur de la ciudad, en aquel entonces poblado por mexicanos llegados a trabajar en los cultivos. La edificación de un solo piso sirvió de centro de reunión para múltiples actividades de la comunidad latina. Luego de quedar en el abandono a mediados de los años 70, fue rescatada en el 2000 de las ruinas por sus raíces históricas. Pero no solo el abandono amenaza a Santa Rita. El constante desarrollo del aeropuerto obligó a la reubicación de más de 6.000 personas e hizo proliferar las maquiladoras. “Ahora solo quedan ocho casas de los antiguos campesinos que dieron vida al barrio chicano”, relató José Cortez, quien fue uno de los campesinos que apoyó a César Chávez en su lucha por la justicia social. Destacó que Santa Rita es un lugar que merece ser reconocido históricamente por tres razones: la huelga de hambre de Chávez, la frase “Sí se puede”, acuñada en dicho sitio por la activista Dolores Huerta, y la lucha por la justicia social en los campos de Arizona.

EN BUSCA DE RECONOCIMIENTO

La iniciativa Latino Heritage Scholars recientemente presentó un informe en el que identifica diez sitios latinos con valor cultural, histórico y arquitectónico que requieren de la protección federal para contar con mayor reconocimiento. contra la decisión del entonces gobernador de Arizona, Jack Williams, de prohibir las huelgas campesinas. “Definitivamente la huelga de hambre puso al barrio ‘El Campito’ y Santa Rita en un plano internacional”, rememoró Cortez. Cortez, que apenas pasaba de los 20 años cuando anduvo al lado del activista, lo recuerda como un líder carismático, sumamente callado, pero con un inmenso amor hacia la humanidad. “No solo sentía amor por su gente, por los campesinos, sentía amor por todos”, dijo Cortez, quien junto a José Antonio Habre, conocido como Casper, rescató del olvido al Santa Rita Center cuando la propiedad iba a perderse. “La nostalgia me hizo volver a Santa Rita en el 2000 y la encontré abandonada, llena de maleza y basura, se me derramaban las lágrimas. La había comprado un italiano que la usaba como bodega, fue cuando le comenté a Casper que debíamos rescatarla, le propuse al dueño

que le limpiábamos la propiedad y que nos permitiera hacer eventos culturales”, indicó. Así Santa Rita Center empezó a resurgir por medio de eventos y en el año 2004 fue adquirida por Chicanos por la Causa, una organización que aboga por la lucha de los mexicano-estadounidenses en el estado. Casper nació en “El Campito”. Hoy recuerda que se le quedó ese nombre porque “todos los campesinos prendían sus fogatas al atardecer para cocinar, y las lumbreras a los lejos asemejan la imagen de un campo”. Otro de los personajes que dio vida a Santa Rita fue Dolores Huerta, quien, al lado de Chávez, convenció a los campesinos de la necesidad de no rendirse en su lucha por mejoras sociales. “Recuerdo que en ese tiempo era muy difícil luchar contra los rancheros porque tenían dinero y fuerza política. La gente le decía a Dolores, aquí no es como California, no se puede. Dolores les decía: ‘cómo hijos de la fregada que no se puede, sí se puede’”. “Fue aquí donde nació esa frase que la caracteriza”, aseguró Cortez. Pero existe una esperanza para Santa Rita, más allá de seguir en la espera de fondos estatales y federales para poder contar con luz eléctrica y arreglar parte de su infraestructura, Cortez y Casper trabajan en la idea de que en el futuro el antiguo inmueble se convierta en un museo. Por lo pronto, el informe de Latino Heritage Scholars busca crear un diálogo alrededor de estos diez sitios, entre ellos Santa Rita, para que estimule el interés de los estudiosos, la comunidad de conservación, el gobierno y el público en general para que no se pierda la historia que resguarda la herencia latina. n Para ver más artículos de cultura visite nuestra web

La realidad es que es un mensaje de esperanza. No

queremos llorar más con lo que hemos llorado con nuestros familiares”, sostuvo Nieves Arocho, de 28 años. Junto a su guitarra y tras grabar la canción en su celular, se la envió al móvil del productor de espectáculos y gestor de artistas Ricardo Cordero, quien rápidamente se la reenvió a varios artistas, entre ellos, Olga Tañón. Fue entonces que Cordero le presentó el proyecto a la Primera Dama de Puerto Rico,

Beatriz Rosselló, quien lo aceptó para levantar fondos para los damnificados del huracán Irma en las islas-municipios de Vieques y Culebra, así como en varios pueblos del este y noreste de la isla, como Fajardo, Río Grande y Luquillo. No obstante, ante la amenaza del huracán María, la producción musical se detuvo. Sin embargo, luego del paso de María, Cordero, Nieves Arocho y Rosselló prosiguieron elaborando el proyecto, hasta

que la Primera Dama creó la iniciativa “Unidos por Puerto Rico”, para recaudar fondos para los damnificados. Tras el interés de Tañón, otros reconocidos artistas levantaron sus teléfonos para sumarse al proyecto, al cual ninguno de los cantantes cobrará. Ednita Nazario, Tommy Torres, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Víctor Manuelle, Pirulo y La Tribu, Jowell y Randy, Cosculluela, Gustavo Laureano (de La Secta), Javier Gómez (de

Vivanativa), Gustavo González (de Black Guayaba), Diana Fuentes, Jerry Rivera, entre otros artistas, participan en el tema de 9 minutos. “La música ayuda para sanar y queremos sanar. De la misma manera, esto es un efecto dominó. Yo lo hago contigo, tú con tu familia y la familia con el vecino. Vamos a un fin: echar pa’lante (para adelante)”, subrayó. Cordero, por su parte, agregó que el propósito de “Isla bonita” es “para motivar, dar esperanza y fe a las personas que están viviendo esta lucha día a día”. “Los motivamos a que se levanten, que conozcan que somos un país fuerte, de ganadores y que vamos a salir adelante”, enfatizó Cordero, quien estrenó el video de la canción en la página web “unidosporpuertorico.com”. La canción está inspirada en el tema “María”, de la multipremiada película “West Side Story”, protagonizada por la propia Rita Moreno. n

Documentar el sufrimiento El escultor Mark Strickland documenta la historia de EE.UU. con obras dedicadas a inmigrantes. EFE

as esculturas que representan a un anciano encorvado, una joven desnuda y la cabeza de la Estatua de la Libertad son tres obras con reminiscencias latinas que sirven al artista Mark Strickland para “documentar el sufrimiento” que vive la población inmigrante en EEUU. “Las dificultades de mis amigos indocumentados me tocan hasta lo más profundo de mi alma y como soy artista todo ese sentir lo transformo en arte”, dijo Strickland desde su taller en Sierra Madre, al norte de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, donde da los últimos retoques a sus esculturas. Esas nuevas obras, de títulos tentativos “Mater Dolorosa”, “Salto de fe” y “Sacrificio del abuelo”, además de la pintura de grandes dimensiones “La situación de 12 millones de Inmigrantes”, son obras que se suman a otros 10 murales que ha hecho anteriormente sobre la inmigración. Su trabajo reciente, revela, ha merecido el interés de “un importante museo” californiano y de dos organizaciones humanitarias internacionales para una futura exhibición. “El artista es el documentalista de la historia, por eso trabajo estas obras sobre inmigrantes”, explicó Strickland, de 69 años y profesor de arte retirado. “Si Pablo Picasso no hubiera pintado ‘El Guernica’, muchísimos nunca hubieran sabido nada sobre esa pequeñita y somnolienta ciudad de 10.000 personas, bombardeada por los nazis en la Segunda Guerra Mundial”, manifestó. La escultura en yeso “Mater Dolorosa” retrata la cabeza de la Estatua de la Libertad, “con sus rayos de luz cubiertos con alambre de púas, porque refleja el dolor de una madre por ver sufrir a sus inmigrantes”, declaró Strickland, quien volcó en el rostro “la belleza expresiva” de varias latinas a quienes registró con fotos para esta obra. “La vulnerabilidad inmigrante, sin nada que los cubra”, señala el artista, está representada en la obra “Salto de fe”, una estatua en bronce de una joven desnuda suspendida en el aire; mientras que la también estatua en bronce “Sacrificio del abuelo” retrata a un anciano arrugado y encorvado.

“Hay una literatura hecha por escritores latinos que están buscando cambios” El escritor chileno Alejandro Zambra cree que la literatura sigue generando cosas nuevas a pesar del contexto actual, marcado por los desastres naturales, el impacto de las redes sociales y la estupidez humana. EFE

l poeta y novelista chileno Alejandro Zambra ve a la literatura como un faro en medio de la tormenta, cuando no parece haber muchas razones para confiar en el futuro de la humanidad. “Entre los desastres naturales y la estupidez humana, ver cómo crece un descontento en todas las direcciones, creo justamente que la literatura está mirándose a sí misma y generando cosas nuevas”, dijo el escritor durante su visita a Phoenix (Arizona).

Zambra, que actualmente reside en México, impartió el taller de lectura y charla bilingüe “How To Forget How to Write Fiction” (Cómo olvidarse de cómo escribir ficción) organizado por CALA Allliance. “Hay una literatura comercial muy instalada y que reproduce siempre lo mismo, pero hay una literatura que la hacen escritores latinos que están buscando cambios”, señaló el autor de “Bonsái”, ganadora del Premio de la Crítica Chilena a la Mejor Novela y cuya adaptación al cine fue presentada en el Festival de Cannes. Los críticos han catalogado a Zambra, nacido en 1975, como el creador de la “ficción autobiográfica”. “No me interesa ninguna catalogación, no me gustan las etiquetas, ni que te digan el tipo de literatura que haces, es como una forma de castigarte. Cuál es la magia que hay en ‘El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba’ (Gabriel García Márquez), no hay ninguna magia, es un realismo realista. Estas etiquetas sirven para inmovilizar y vender”, señala. etrás del piloto estadounidense Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) hay una historia de vida compleja, que bien podría ser narrada de un modo que confrontara al espectador y lo obligara, sino a repensar su propia vida, al menos sí a cuestionar ciertos fenómenos sociales relacionados con el problema de las drogas. Lo que hacen el guionista Gary Spinel y el director Doug Miman (‘Edge of tomorrow’, ‘Jumper’) en ‘American Made’ es algo muy distinto. Su prioridad es estimular, exagerar, vender una experiencia vertiginosa y ante todo placentera. Así es que el énfasis está puesto en el encanto del personaje y no en su complejidad. En lugar de tratar el escenario, Sudamérica, desde su crisis social, lo abordan desde el exostismo. La acción, así mismo, no progresa de manera natural, sino que avanza precipitadamente para conducir al instante que todos esperan: la caída del héroe corrompido. Y después está la sonrisa de Tom Cruise, explotada de todos los ángulos posibles. No hay pistas sobre la psicología del personaje, no está claro por qué persigue más millones de los que puede gastar, a pesar de la presión de Pablo Escobar y del gobierno estadounidense. Lo único que queda claro es que tiene una gran sonrisa, que es un hombre encantador. Hay tantas tomas de Tom Cruise sonriendo detrás de sus gafas oscuras, que rápidamente

se pierde la cuenta. La sucesión de primerísimos planos (‘close ups’) sobre la cara del protagonista es, por decir lo menos, escandalosa. El objetivo está claro. Aunque la narración trata de disfrazarse de crítica social -mostrando tímidamente la hipocresía del estadounidense dispuesta a enriquecerse a manos de los mismos compradores de droga que castiga-, la realidad es que su finalidad es siempre la seducción. El filme ha sido catalogado por varios críticos como una tentativa de humor negro. Quizá sería mas acertado decir que se trata de un mal chiste. En últimas, el problema social que se busca denunciar -la hipocresía del dinero fácil- es justamente lo que motiva la producción de este tipo de películas. En 1997, Barry acepta viajar a Sudamérica para fotografiar grupos comunistas usando un avión de la CIA. Barry parece ser un hombre impulsivo y al mismo tiempo temerario.
