Durante los últimos 29 años, junto con Hernán -su esposo con quien llegó de Colombia e hizo una familia en los últimos 36 años- convirtió a AL DÍA News en la marca de noticias bilingüe inglés-español más antigua y reputada de Filadel a.

La historia de la fundación de AL DÍA en la casa de la familia Guaracao, en Olney, norte de Filadel a, es una de las favoritas de Hernán para contarle a cualquier nuevo miembro de la familia de esta empresa periodística. Es la historia de un sueño americano, lleno de altibajos, sin duda, pero un sueño cumplido al n y al cabo.

UNSTOPPABLE LATINA

Although Paulette’s dream to study computer engineering or UX design lasted only one day in college because she was too scared, resulting in pivoting to social work soon a er. Despite spending many years in human services, it wasn’t until focusing on business strategy and innovation that she felt in the right career.

“Success is personal. We spend so much time focusing on what grandmother wants, what the neighbor said, or ‘climbing the corporate ladder’ that we forget to work on the areas that inspire us to take action,” Paulette commented.

However, launching Unstoppable Latina, or LEAD Media, its original name, was a di cult journey. In March 2020, Piñero was hospitalized with Covid and spent three weeks in the intensive care unit (ICU), barely holding on to life. She recalls being alone, waiting to die, and regretting postponing her dreams of launching a business because the “perfect time” never arrived.

“It took a lot of e ort, therapy, and focusing on my strengths to allow me to see myself as worthy of doing what I love with the knowledge and skills I have today,” said Paulette, who changed the name of her business. e name did not honor the powerhouse bosses she gets to work with. UNA LATINA IMPARABLE

La boricua admite que su formación en servicios humanos y trabajo social le han permitido “entender las barreras físicas, sistémicas y sociales que enfrentan las empresarias latinas y guiarlas en la creación de un plan de acción para que puedan hacer crecer sus negocios sin sacri carse en el proceso”. Esto incluye las comunidades que nos rodean, la forma en que impactan en la toma de decisiones y los diferentes obstáculos que se presentan, algo por lo que, según ella, “la mayoría de las personas con títulos en marketing o negocios luchan y no logran entender”.

El sueño de Paulette de estudiar ingeniería informática o diseño UX solo duró un día en la universidad porque estaba demasiado asustada, así que poco después se cambió al trabajo social. Pero, a pesar de los muchos años de trabajo en servicios humanos, no fue hasta que se centró en la estrategia empresarial y la innovación que se sintió en la carrera correcta.

“El éxito es personal. Pasamos tanto tiempo centrándonos en lo que quiere la abuela, en lo que dijo el vecino o en ‘subir la escalera corporativa’, que nos olvidamos de trabajar en las áreas que nos inspiran a pasar a la acción”, comentó Paulette.

Sin embargo, lanzar Unstoppable Latina o LEAD Media, su nombre original, fue un viaje difícil. En marzo del 2020, Piñero fue hospitalizada por COVID y pasó tres semanas en la unidad de cuidados intensivos (UCI), a duras penas aferrándose a la vida. Recuerda haber estado sola, esperando la muerte y lamentando haber pospuesto sus sueños de lanzar un negocio porque el “momento perfecto” nunca llegó.

“Me costó mucho esfuerzo, terapia y tiempo para centrarme en mis puntos fuertes, para poder verme digna de hacer lo que me gusta con los conocimientos y habilidades que tengo hoy”, dijo Paulette, que cambió el nombre de su negocio. On Easter Sunday, April 9, María Quiñones Sánchez became the rst candidate in a eld of 11 for Philadelphia mayor to o cially drop out of the 2023 race.

e lone Latina candidate announced she would wind down her campaign and step down as a candidate, citing the “obnoxious, obscene amount of money” ooding the eld in an exclusive with e Philadelphia Inquirer.

“I am sorry to be suspending my campaign. I ran for mayor because I’ve lived every challenge this city faces, and with my policy and legislative ex-

perience, I felt I could tackle our city’s challenges head-on,” Quiñones Sánchez lamented in a written statement to the press.

A lifelong public servant and leader in the city’s overwhelmingly Latino district, Quiñones Sánchez le behind suggestions that the winning candidate should adopt, which included proposals to address Latino representation, language access, poverty, public safety, and more.

e proposed Agenda Latina reects her 14-year tenure in city council, where she spearheaded legislation to forward essential support for non-English speaking communities.

REPRESENTATION IN GOVERNMENT

Latinos make up a quarter of Philly’s overall population, but there remains an absence of sitting representatives in municipal halls. In previous elections, Spanish-speaking candidates attempted to compete in at-Large races but were unsuccessful, save Quiñones Sánchez.

She calls for “representation at every level of government, including the Mayor’s cabinet, department appointments, boards, commissions, vendors, and contracting opportunities.”

Additionally, Quiñones Sánchez wrote, she asks that government “commit to job requirements reform including collective bargaining to better sta a diverse and representative workforce.”

A report by the Controller’s o ce in December found that Latinos and other non-English speaking communities made gains in participation within local government, but the threshold was bleak. Latinos, speci cally, account for 12.5% of new executive hires last year, but in 2020, none were hired.

LANGUAGE ACCESS

Philly is a diverse, polyglot city with over 100 languages spoken across neighborhoods by 146,000 residents.

Quiñones Sánchez’s, from the outset of her mayoral campaign, said that violence and blight in her neighborhood were borne of inequities. Kensington has signi cantly higher rates of residents living in poverty than the rest of the city.

“End policies that disrupt vulnerable families and address excessively high rates of child separation,” Quiñones Sánchez suggested, adding that the city should “support culturally competent providers who use trauma-informed practices to provide health and behavioral health services in a vulnerable community.”

During 2023’s packed mayoral race, candidates have been asked for their plans on a plethora of topics at numerous forums, and arts is no exception despite o en being on the chopping block in the City of Brotherly Love.

On March 30, the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance held a Philadelphia Mayoral Arts Forum at Taller Puertorriqueño, focusing on the candidates’ plans for the cultural scene in the city. AL DÍA’s Deputy Editor of Culture and Education Némesis Mora was among the group of journalist moderators asking questions.

e following candidates were in attendance: Allan Domb, Rebecca Rhynhart, Maria Quiñones-Sanchez, James Deleon, Helen Gym, Cherelle Parker, Derek Green and David Oh.

Many topics surrounding the arts scene in Philadelphia were mentioned, but most candidates saw the arts as violence prevention and a necessity for increasing equality in neighborhoods across the city.

Patricia Wilson Aden — president and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance — advocated in her initial speech for an arts mayor that nally gives the $4.1 billion sector the respect and support it deserves.

WHAT THE CANDIDATES SAID

Allan Domb said he is going to be a cheerleader for arts and culture.

“I would also pick up the phone and call 50 of the largest companies in the city and beg them for $100,000 or $50,000, and I think I could raise the money,” he said.

Rebecca Rhynhart promised an established revenue source for the arts — and said small local art organizations won’t compete in the same funding category with large art organizations. She said arts will be a priority in every neighborhood.

El 30 de marzo, la Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance celebró un Foro de las Artes para la Alcaldía de Filadel a en Taller Puertorriqueño, centrado en los planes de los candidatos para la escena cultural de la ciudad. La editora de Cultura y Educación de AL DÍA, Némesis Mora, formó parte del grupo de periodistas que expusieron sus preguntas.

Asistieron los candidatos Allan Domb, Rebecca Rhynhart, María Quiñones-Sánchez, James Deleon, Helen Gym, Cherelle Parker, Derek Green y David Oh.

Se mencionaron muchos temas relacionados con la escena artística de Filadel a, pero la mayoría de los candidatos consideraron las artes una forma de prevenir la violencia y una necesidad para aumentar la igualdad en los barrios de la ciudad.

En su discurso de apertura, Patricia Wilson Aden, presidenta y consejera delegada de la Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, abogó por un alcalde de las artes que conceda, por n, a este sector de 4.100 millones de dólares el respeto y el apoyo que merece.

María Quiñones Sanchez highlighted the importance of redressing the disinvestment that has a ected the Philadelphia neighborhoods. She said she will make sure every neighborhood has access to the arts, making all equal in order to move forward together.

Judge James DeLeon wants to increase art programs in school. Students will be able to choose from acting to music and other forms to pursue their passions.

For Helen Gym, she said the arts are indispensable from life. By promoting equity in Philadelphia’s arts scene, Gym said she

will make sure every community — particularly the ones in neighborhoods that lack support — has access to funding. She also mentioned an Artists’ Bill of Rights that ghts for better pay, healthcare and bene ts for artists in the city.

As a little girl in Guyana, Devi Ramkissoon immediately became exposed to the world of sustainability and sustainable living.

While she only lived in the South American country for a few years before moving to the U.S., her experiences there really shaped the person she is today and her perspective on the world.

Due to some of the economic challenges in Guyana, Ramkissoon and her family migrated to New York City when she was just a toddler.

“My experience living in poverty connected with the way that the community there rallied to support one another and really shaped the way that I view my work today,” said Ramkissoon during an interview with AL DÍA.

Two words that have guided both her life and career are sustainability and resilience.

JUST A WAY OF LIFE

Ramkissoon can recall being a child in Guyana and experiencing her family repurposing materials to make other objects.

Her grandparents ran a small farm. In line, Ramkissoon remembers her grandfather hammering the tin roof to make other tools, and using a water barrel to provide clean water for watering plants and washing clothes.

“ ose types of practices were part of daily life for me and really stayed with me as ways of survival to make it through a really tough economic situation,” Ramkissoon said.

Another memory that stuck with her was the sharing of resources in the communities.

Ramkissoon has memories of the families in her grandparents’ community sharing resources and food during especially challenging times.

ose concepts of sustainability and resilience traveled with her and her family as they began their new lives in the States.

“We really let those types of practices carry forward into our time as new immigrants to this country,” she said.

Coming to a new country brought its challenges; however, they relied on those very concepts and found a community of other families and immigrants who utilized similar practices.

While the term “sustainability” wasn’t a part of her vocabulary until later in her formative years, the concept has been a constant guiding principle throughout her life.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

When entering college, Ramkissoon started out as an astrophysics major, believing she’d then catapult into a career as a scientist.

However, she got “bit by the social justice bug,” as she said, while an undergrad student at Swarthmore College.

Her many internships and externships include ones at a few social justice organizations, such as an organization that advocated for the rights of the South Asian American community a er the 9/11 attacks. at turned on a switch in Ramkissoon’s mind.

“I really came to understand that my goals and interests in life were about service and guring out how I could channel that,” she said.

As a result, Ramkissoon switched her major to political science and English Literature, where she studied topics such as the roots of colonialism in her native Guyana and how former British colonies propelled themselves toward independence.

at experience helped her gain a more global perspective on the happenings of the world.

A CALLING TO SERVE

Once Ramkissoon discovered that her calling was to serve, she started to pin down how exactly she would do so as a career option.

A big part of that discovery took place in grad school, when she earned a Master of Science in Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

While there, she focused on issues such as poverty reduction and economic development with a focus on working within farming communities.

at work drew parallels between her own upbringing and the struggles that communities in developing countries continued to face.

“A lot of my focus in grad school was in re ning that and developing a foundation for doing that,” Ramkissoon said.

“I especially enjoyed my program because it had such a diversity of students. It

was really important to me that I wasn’t taking classes only with other Americans and that I was hearing other perspectives that challenged my own and were di erent from my own,” she added.

e majority of her professional career took place at Chemonics International and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), respectively, working primarily with farming communities at both stops.

At Chemonics, much of her time was spent working with the Famine Early Warning Systems Network. She managed multiple $100-$200 million-dollar projects that focused on data collection and analysis of indicators of famine around the world with the goal of famine prevention.

While her work was primarily focused in Sub-Saharan Africa, Ramkissoon oversaw 30-plus country o ces around the world.

A er 3 years, Ramkissoon decided she wanted to pivot from the humanitarian side

of food security to more of the long-term development front.

at decision facilitated a move to USAID, where most of her time was spent working on former President Obama’s Feed the Future initiative, which sought to address global hunger and food insecurity. ere, her focus was primarily in South and Southeast Asia, where she’d o en look at investments in projects that would improve the viability of farm businesses, increase farmer income, and support the environment, with a focus on women’s entrepreneurship.

e decade-plus working for those two organizations were quite ful lling.

“For me, the most meaningful experiences were when I was directly working with the communities I served while living and traveling overseas,” Ramkissoon said.

Overall, the work tied closely to her passions for poverty reduction and economic development.

“It also closely tied to my passions for supporting women business owners, marginalized communities in di erent countries, and thinking more creatively about how to attract investment to those countries from outside investors,” she added.

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS NETWORK OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA

In 2018, while still with USAID, Ramkissoon moved to Philadelphia. It marked a return to the region she had gotten to experience as an undergrad and earlier in her career.

A er returning to the city more than a decade later, she began to re ect on the inner workings of the city.

While here during the rst go-round, she felt the city had a lot of promise and positive economic development taking place.

However, upon returning she found it startling that many of the same challenges from a decade prior were still just as prevalent — if not, more so.

“I started feeling like, ‘there has to be a way to channel what I was doing overseas and apply that to the challenges of this city,’” said Ramkissoon.

While enduring the heightened level of need brought about by the pandemic, Ramkissoon was even more determined to do more to help her local community.

Naturally, she started searching for opportunities to do so and saw an opening with the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN), which was looking for a new executive director.

at role was a perfect t in terms of the work Ramkissoon had already been doing throughout her career and what she was interested in doing next for her local community.

“ e ability to work with sustainable and local businesses was especially appealing because I had seen that businesses were really the driver of economic growth overseas, and really believe in that model,” she noted. Being able to work with an organization that shared the same values she has lived by her entire life was an opportunity she couldn’t let slip away.

THE TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE

In February 2022, Ramkissoon was ofcially installed as the new executive director of the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia.

e mission of the SBN is to build a just, green, and thriving economy in the Greater Philadelphia region.

A big part of the SBN model is doing business under the Triple Bottom Line. e term was coined in 1994 by entrepreneur John Elkington and is a concept that puts an equivalent focus on the social and environmental impact of business as much as the nancial.

“It’s people, planet and pro t,” said Ramkissoon, proceeding to expand on each component.

“It’s doing business that serves people, whether those people are your own employees and their families, or the community in which you work or live.”

e planet component pertains to the ways to make a positive environmental impact through your business.

e nal is pro tability, the primary goal of most businesses.

“It’s important for every business to make a pro t to survive, but there are ways to do that more sustainably,” said Ramkissoon.

SBN is the region’s only advocacy and membership organization for businesses committed to improving their environmental and social impact, as well as their profitability.

It’s a philosophy that Ramkissoon is fully behind.

THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS

To Ramkissoon, sustainability is no longer a choice.

“I think that all businesses have to become sustainable in order for our planet and our communities to survive,” she said. Provided this, she is determined to work alongside the businesses that have already adopted the sustainable business model and simultaneously help those looking to get there.

Given the diversity of the Philadelphia region, Ramkissoon is cognizant of the importance of ensuring that all of SBN’s programs and events re ect the needs, experiences, and challenges that the diverse business community faces.

“It harkens back to my experience as a child,” she said. “I know that many diverse communities in this region have similar practices and experiences with sustainability… and I’m looking to work through SBN to highlight some of those experiences better so that more diverse businesses and communities can see themselves re ected in the work that we do.”

Partnering with the region’s diverse chambers of commerce, Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), and other business advocacy and environmental organizations is another key to success.

“A success for us will mean a success for another organization, and similarly, a success for them upli s us and allows us to continue to succeed in our work,” Ramkissoon added.

All in all, Ramkissoon’s goal is to help the region make sustainability a living, breathing practice that is a part of the way of life for local communities and businesses. z

De niña, en Guyana, Devi Ramkissoon conoció muy pronto el mundo de la sostenibilidad y la vida sostenible.

Aunque solo vivió unos años en el país sudamericano antes de trasladarse a Estados Unidos, sus experiencias allí fueron las que forjaron la persona que es hoy y su perspectiva del mundo.

UNA FORMA DE VIDA

Ramkissoon recuerda su infancia en Guyana, cuando su familia reutilizaba materiales para fabricar otros objetos y sus abuelos tenían una pequeña granja. Recuerda a su abuelo martilleando el tejado de hojalata para fabricar otras herramientas y utilizando un barril para obtener agua limpia para regar las plantas y lavar la ropa. “Ese tipo de prácticas formaban parte de mi vida cotidiana y quedaron grabadas en mi memoria como formas de supervivencia para superar una situación económica difícil”, recordó.

También conserva en la memoria el reparto de recursos en las comunidades. Recuerda cómo las familias de la comunidad de sus abuelos compartían recursos y alimentos en épocas difíciles.

Los conceptos de sostenibilidad y resistencia viajaron con ella y su familia cuando empezaron su nueva vida en Estados Unidos. “Dejamos que ese tipo de prácticas se trasladaran a nuestra época de nuevos inmigrantes en este país”, a rmó.

Llegar a un nuevo país conllevaba sus retos, pero encontraron una comunidad de otras familias e inmigrantes que utilizaban prácticas similares.

Aunque el término ‘sostenibilidad’ no formó parte de su vocabulario sino hasta más tarde en sus años de formación, el concepto ha sido un principio rector constante.

EL SIGUIENTE CAPÍTULO

Cuando entró en la universidad, Ramkissoon empezó estudiando astrofísica, creyendo

que entonces seguiría una carrera como cientí ca, pero “le picó el bicho de la justicia social”, como ella dice, mientras estudiaba en el Swarthmore College.

Entre sus numerosas prácticas, se incluyen algunas en organizaciones de justicia social, como una que defendía los derechos de la comunidad sudasiática estadounidense tras los atentados del 11 de septiembre. Eso encendió un interruptor en la mente de Ramkissoon. Como ella a rma, “comprendí que mis objetivos e intereses en la vida tenían que ver con el servicio y con averiguar cómo podía canalizarlo”.

Como resultado, cambió su especialización a Ciencias Políticas y Literatura Inglesa, con las que estudió las raíces del colonialismo en su Guyana natal y cómo las antiguas colonias británicas se impulsaron hacia la independencia. Esa experiencia le ayudó a adquirir una perspectiva más global de los acontecimientos mundiales.

LA VOCACIÓN DE SERVICIO

Una vez Ramkissoon descubrió que su vocación era el servicio, empezó a determinar cómo lo haría como opción profesional. Gran parte de ese descubrimiento tuvo lugar en la escuela de posgrado, cuando cursó un máster en Servicio Exterior en la Universidad de Georgetown.

Allí centró su atención en temas como la reducción de la pobreza y el desarrollo económico, con especial enfoque en las comunidades agrícolas. Ese trabajo estableció paralelismos entre su propia educación y las luchas a las que siguen enfrentándose las comunidades de los países en desarrollo.

Según Ramkissoon, “gran parte de mis estudios de posgrado se centraron en perfeccionar esos conocimientos y sentar las bases para llevarlos a cabo. Disfruté especialmente de mi programa porque estaba rodeada de una gran diversidad de estudiantes. Para mí era muy importante no tomar clases solo con otros estadounidenses, sino escuchar otras perspectivas que desa aran las mías y fueran diferentes de las mías”, añadió.

La mayor parte de su carrera profesional la desarrolló en Chemonics International y en la Agencia de Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo Internacional (USAID, por sus siglas en inglés), trabajando con comunidades agrícolas.

En Chemonics, dedicó gran parte de su tiempo a trabajar con la Red de Sistemas de Alerta Temprana contra la Hambruna.

Gestionó varios proyectos de entre 100 y 200 millones de dólares, centrados en la recopilación de datos y el análisis de indicadores de hambruna en todo el mundo, con el objetivo de prevenirla.

Aunque su trabajo se centró principalmente en el África subsahariana, Ramkissoon supervisó más de 30 o cinas nacionales en todo el mundo.

Al cabo de tres años, decidió que quería pasar de la vertiente humanitaria de la seguridad alimentaria al desarrollo a largo plazo. Esa decisión facilitó su traslado a USAID, donde pasó la mayor parte de su tiempo trabajando en la iniciativa Feed the Future del expresidente Obama, que pretendía abordar el hambre y la inseguridad alimentaria en el mundo.

Allí se centró principalmente en el sur y el sureste de Asia, donde a menudo buscaba inversiones en proyectos que mejoraran la viabilidad de las empresas agrícolas, aumentaran los ingresos de los agricultores y apoyaran el medio ambiente, con especial atención a la iniciativa empresarial de las mujeres.

Para Ramkissoon, “las experiencias más signi cativas fueron cuando trabajé directamente con las comunidades a las que servía mientras vivía y viajaba al extranjero”.

En general, el trabajo estaba estrechamente ligado a sus pasiones por la reducción de la pobreza y el desarrollo económico. Pero también “con mi pasión por apoyar a las mujeres empresarias y a las comunidades marginadas de distintos países, y por pensar de forma más creativa en cómo atraer inversores extranjeros a esos países”.

RED DE EMPRESAS SOSTENIBLES DE GRAN FILADELFIA

En el 2018, cuando trabajaba en USAID, Ramkissoon se mudó a Filadel a. Fue un regreso a la región que había conocido durante sus estudios universitarios y al principio de su carrera. Tras regresar a la ciudad más de una década después, comenzó a re exionar sobre su funcionamiento interno. Durante su primera visita, la ciudad le pareció muy prometedora y con un desarrollo económico muy positivo, pero a su regreso se dio cuenta de que muchos de los problemas de la década anterior seguían existiendo, incluso más.

“Empecé a pensar que tenía que haber una forma de canalizar lo que hacía en el extranjero y aplicarlo a los retos de esta ciudad”, señaló. En un momento de enorme necesidad

debido a la pandemia, Ramkissoon estaba aún más decidida a trabajar por su comunidad local.

Al buscar oportunidades para llevar a cabo su proyecto, vio una vacante en la Red de Empresas Sostenibles de Gran Filadel a (SBN, por sus siglas en inglés), que buscaba un nuevo director ejecutivo. Ese puesto encajaba perfectamente con el trabajo que ya había realizado a lo largo de su carrera y con lo que le interesaba hacer a continuación por su comunidad local.

“La posibilidad de trabajar con empresas sostenibles y locales me resultaba especialmente atractiva porque había visto en las empresas el motor del crecimiento económico en el extranjero, y creo en ese modelo”, señaló.

EL TRIPLE BALANCE

En febrero del 2022, Ramkissoon fue nombrada o cialmente nueva directora ejecutiva de la SBN, cuya misión es construir una economía justa, ecológica y próspera en la región de Filadel a.

El término fue acuñado en 1994 por el empresario John Elkington, y se centra en el impacto social, medioambiental y nanciero de las empresas.

De acuerdo con Ramkissoon, “son las personas, el planeta y los bene cios. Es hacer negocios que sirvan a las personas, sean tus propios empleados y sus familias, o la comunidad en la que trabajas o vives. El componente del planeta se re ere a las formas de tener un impacto medioambiental positivo a través de tu negocio, y el último es la rentabilidad, el objetivo principal de la mayoría de las empresas. Es importante que todas las empresas obtengan bene cios para sobrevivir, pero hay formas de hacerlo de forma más sostenible”.

La SBN es la única organización regional de defensa y a liación de empresas comprometida con la mejora de su impacto medioambiental y social, así como de su rentabilidad, losofía que sigue Ramkissoon.

EL FUTURO DE LA SOSTENIBILIDAD EN LOS NEGOCIOS

Para Ramkissoon, la sostenibilidad no es una opción. “Creo que todas las empresas tienen que ser sostenibles para que nuestro planeta y nuestras comunidades sobrevivan”, señaló. Por ello, está decidida a trabajar junto a las empresas que ya han adoptado el modelo de empresa sostenible y, al mismo tiempo, ayudar a las que quieren llegar a él.

Dada la diversidad de la región de Filadel a, Ramkissoon es consciente de la importancia de garantizar que todos los programas y eventos de la SBN re ejen las necesidades, experiencias y retos a los que se enfrenta la diversa comunidad empresarial. “Me remonta a mi experiencia de niña”, indicó.

Asimismo, expresó que “sé que muchas comunidades diversas de esta región tienen prácticas y experiencias similares con la sostenibilidad, así que quiero trabajar, a través de la SBN, para resaltar mejor algunas de esas experiencias, de modo que más empresas y comunidades diversas puedan verse re ejadas en el trabajo que hacemos”.

Las instituciones nancieras de desarrollo comunitario (CDFI, por sus siglas en inglés) y otras organizaciones medioambientales y de defensa empresarial son clave del éxito. “Un éxito para nosotros signi cará un éxito para otra organización, y, del mismo modo, un éxito para ellos nos eleva y nos permite seguir triunfando en nuestro trabajo”, añadió Ramkissoon.

En de nitiva, el objetivo de Ramkissoon es ayudar a la región a hacer de la sostenibilidad una práctica viva que forme parte del modo de vida de las comunidades y empresas locales. z

Yasmina Praderas Ramírez (Huesca, 1981), who li ed the highest award of Spanish cinema in the Best Sound category, along with Aitor Berenguer and Fabiola Ordoyo, for their work on the lm As Bestas.

In Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s multi-awardwinning lm, which portrays the tragic story of a French couple in a rural area of Galicia (northwestern Spain), Berenguer played his role in the rst phase of sound, more speci cally in capturing dialogue on the set.

Ordoyo, meanwhile, worked on post-production, dialogue editing and making decisions about ambient sound and the rest of the sound e ects. “All these blocks are more or less agreed upon, pre-worked and nally go to the mixing sessions, which is what I do”, explained Praderas Ramírez in conversation with AL DÍA.

Her task involved a lot of concentration and detail when determining at what point or at what level, or what kind of textures are le in the environments. “ ere is another delicate part which is the dialogue treatment. As it is a very non-theatrical lm and the realism has to be evident, this required work not so much at an intense level of sound load, but at a level of concentration and sensitivity”, she commented from Barcelona, where she has lived for two decades.

THE FIRST

At the prestigious Goya Awards ceremony, held last February in Seville, Praderas arrived cautiously. It was not the rst time she stepped on the red carpet to hear her name among the nominees. In 2020, she had already experienced that indescribable and uncomfortable sensation of nerves, uncertainty and anxiety, waiting to see if her technical role in the production A quien hierro mata would nally lead her to win a ‘cabezón’.

“ is year I was relaxed. You never know until the moment they take the envelope out if you are going to win or not. is year there was a very high level, there were

Becoming the rst female sound mixer to win a statuette with the bust of the painter Francisco de Goya makes Praderas dream, although she always keeps her feet on the ground. “I recognize that it excites, it makes me proud, although what I am le with, if it can be valued in the long term, is the possibility of being a reference, because I believe that women are necessary, and that little by little women in this profession become more visible”, she added.

IT IS NOT A ROAD OF ROSES

From her higher studies in seventh art, her foray into production, live sound, dialogue editing, dubbing recording and dubbing sound mixing, this professional never imagined that she would make her name in the history of Spanish cinema. However, to get where she is, she had to face challenges and social paradigms, just like many women in di erent positions in other industries beyond lm.

“It seems like you have to prove twice as much to get yourself valued. I think it’s a cultural and customary issue. You’re in a movie theater and people there are not used to a woman having that position of responsibility. In some cases, from the outset, it gives the feeling that it is di cult to assert yourself, or that you have to be very, very, very, very, very productive, or very, very, very, very responsable”, she said.

Despite the “outward-facing situations that have cost and continue to cost”, the sound mixer admitted to feeling fortunate to belong to an equal and egalitarian team at entertainment provider Deluxe. “I love my cra , I enjoy it very much. Every lm is a di erent world, sound is invisible, it’s ambiguous, and I feel comfortable striving and learning, and what’s le for me is to keep enjoying it”, she nally stated. z

La segunda, y no la tercera, también puede ser la vencida. Así lo puede testi car Yasmina Praderas Ramírez (Huesca, 1981), quien levantó el máximo galardón del cine español en la categoría Mejor Sonido junto con Aitor Berenguer y Fabiola Ordoyo, por su trabajo en la película As Bestas.

En la multipremiada cinta de Rodrigo Sorogoyen, que retrata la trágica historia de una pareja francesa en una zona rural de Galicia (noroeste de España), Berenguer desempeñó su rol en la primera fase del sonido, más especí camente en la captación de diálogos en el rodaje.

Ordoyo, por su parte, se dedicó a la postproducción, la edición de diálogos y la toma de decisiones sobre el sonido de los ambientes y el resto de efectos sonoros. “Todos esos bloques quedan más o menos consensuados, pre-trabajados y pasan nalmente a las jornadas de mezcla que es a lo que me dedico yo”, explicó Praderas Ramírez en conversación con AL DÍA

Su tarea implicó mucha concentración y detalle a la hora de determinar en qué punto o a qué nivel, o qué tipo de texturas se dejan en los entornos y ambientes. “Hay otra parte delicada que es el tratamiento de diálogos. Como es una película muy poco efectista y el realismo tiene que evidenciarse, eso requería un trabajo no tanto a un nivel intenso de carga sonora, sino a un nivel de concentración y sensibilidad”, comentó desde Barcelona, donde vive desde hace dos décadas.

LA PRIMERA

En la ceremonia de los prestigiosos Premios Goya, celebrada el pasado febrero en Sevilla, Praderas llegó cauta. No era la primera vez que pisaba la alfombra roja para escuchar su nombre entre los nominados. En 2020, ya había experimentado esa indescriptible e incómoda sensación de nervios, incertidumbre y ansiedad, expectante a si su función técnica en la producción A quien hierro mata le llevaría nalmente a obtener un ‘cabezón’.

“Este año iba más tranquila. No se sabe nunca hasta que no llega el momento que sacan el sobre, si te va tocar o no te va a tocar. Este año había un nivel muy alto, competían películas que tenían un trabajo muy chulo”, señaló. Convertirse en la primera mujer mezcladora de sonido en llevarse una estatuilla con el busto del pintor Francisco de Goya, hace soñar a Praderas aunque siempre con los pies en la tierra. “Reconozco que ilusiona, enorgullece, aunque con lo que me quedo, si se puede valorar a largo plazo, es la posibilidad de ser un referente, porque creo que son necesarios referentes mujeres, y que poco a poco se vaya visibilizando a la mujer en esta profesión”, agregó.

NO ES UN CAMINO DE ROSAS

Desde sus estudios superiores de séptimo arte, su incursión en la producción, el sonido en directo, la edición de diálogos, la grabación de doblajes y las mezclas de sonido de doblaje, esta profesional nunca se imaginó que apuntaría su nombre en la historia del cine español. Sin embargo, para llegar donde está, tuvo que enfrentarse a desafíos y paradigmas sociales, al igual que muchas mujeres en diferentes puestos en otras industrias más allá de la cinematográ ca. “Parece que tienes que demostrar el doble para conseguir que te valoren. Creo que es un tema cultural y de costumbrismo. Estás en una sala de cine y las personas que están allí no tienen la costumbre de que sea una mujer la que tenga ese cargo de responsabilidad. En algunos casos, así de entrada, da la sensación de que cuesta hacerte valer, o tienes que estar siempre siendo muy, muy, muy, productiva, o muy, muy, muy responsable”, mencionó.

Pese a las situaciones “de cara al exterior que han costado y siguen costando”, la mezcladora de sonidos admitió sentirse afortunada de pertenecer a un equipo paritario e igualitario en el proveedor de entretenimiento Deluxe. “Me encanta mi o cio, lo disfruto mucho. Cada película es un mundo diferente, el sonido es invisible, es ambiguo, y me siento cómoda esforzándome y aprendiendo y lo que me queda es seguir disfrutando”, declaró nalmente. z

Amparo Ortiz was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where she still lives, and her childhood was “full of movies, playground games, and crushes”.

“I didn’t start reading books for fun until I was fourteen, but I’d written lots of short stories and song lyrics ever since I was in elementary school”, she recalled in a recent interview with AL DÍA. en, at seventeen, she wrote her “very rst terrible attempt at a novel”, Ortiz joked, and once she turned nineteen, she realized she could become an author and get paid to write books.

“I mostly read kidlit, so I didn’t see anything else as an option in terms of nding it enjoyable from a writer’s perspective”, said Ortiz, who in the last decade became a renowned writer of fantasy novels addressed to younger audiences. “I love discovering rsts and how impactful they are for the rest of a person’s life. Most of the biggest lessons we learn happen when we’re too young to fully cope with the consequences, especially if we feel alone and like the only ones going through it. Now imagine adding the stress of saving the world during that time period. It’s viciously delightful!”.

What Ortiz novels have in common is that they are usually set up in Puerto Rico and bring to light di erent aspects of the Boricua culture. In her latest novel, Last Sunrise in Eterna (Page Street Kids, March, 2023), three teenagers are invited to spend seven days on the secluded island oating o the coast of Puerto Rico to learn the magic of the elves.

“I write what I know and what I wish to understand. A lot of my culture is easy for me to share with others, and a lot of it is tougher to explain because it’s rooted in an understanding that only comes from direct experience. Without my country and my life in it, I wouldn’t write at all”, she said. “It was because of the lack of stories set in PR and featuring people who lived like me that I chose to toss all of my favorite things in fantasy into the world I’d grown up knowing and loving. Magic is more than what we’ve been told, a er all”.

Amparo Ortiz nació y creció en Puerto Rico, donde sigue viviendo, y su infancia estuvo “llena de películas, juegos y enamoramientos”.

“No empecé a leer libros por diversión hasta los catorce años, pero ya en la escuela primaria escribía muchos cuentos y letras de canciones”, recordó esta reconocida autora de novelas juveniles en una entrevista con AL DÍA.

No fue hasta los diecisiete años que escribió su “primer intento terrible de novela”, y dos años más tarde decidió que podía convertirse en autora y cobrar por escribir libros juveniles.

“Yo leía sobre todo literatura infantil, así que no veía otra opción desde el punto de vista de la escritura”, explicó Ortiz, autora de novelas de fantasía como la duología Blazewrath Games o la recién publicada Last Sunrise in Eterna (Page Street Kids, 2023).

“Me encanta descubrir las primeras veces y lo impactantes que son para el resto de la vida de una persona”, señaló. La escritora, además, manifestó que “la mayoría de las lecciones más importantes que aprendemos ocurren cuando somos demasiado jóvenes para asumir plenamente las consecuencias, sobre todo si nos sentimos solos y como los únicos que pasan por ello. Ahora imagina añadir el estrés de salvar el mundo durante ese periodo de tiempo. Es viciosamente delicioso”.

Uno de los elementos que tienen en común las novelas juveniles de Ortiz es que suelen estar ambientadas en Puerto Rico y sacan a relucir distintos aspectos de la cultura boricua. Es el caso de Last Sunrise in Eterna, protagonizada por tres adolescentes que son invitadas a pasar siete días en la apartada isla que ota frente a la costa de Puerto Rico para aprender la magia de los duendes.

“Escribo sobre lo que sé y lo que deseo entender. Muchos aspectos de mi cultura me resultan fáciles de compartir con los demás, y otros son más difíciles de explicar porque están arraigados en una comprensión que sólo proviene de la experiencia directa. Sin mi país y mi vida en él, no escribiría nada”, a rmó.

Advirtió también que “fue por la falta de historias ambientadas en Puerto Rico y protagonizadas por gente que viviera como yo, por lo que decidí volcar todas mis cosas favoritas de la fantasía en el mundo que había crecido conociendo

Her attraction to magic reality —dragons, vampires, elves, monsters star in her Blazewrath Games duology— could be linked to the history of oral traditions in Latin America, but for her speci cally, “it’s all due to my upbringing as a fantasy and horror movie fan. I’ve always been obsessed with magic in lms and TV shows, so when the time came to dive into fantasy books, I kept inserting myself into the main character’s shoes and pretending I was going through it instead. en I wondered... why can’t someone like me ght monsters, too?”, the author explained. is led her to researching local myths and legends, “But I was always drawn to what Western literature considered monstrous, so that was my blueprint for expanding what we consider Puerto Rican fantasy now”.

SEARCHING FOR DISTANCE

Ortiz speaks Spanish at home, mostly, but she writes in English because “ it’s the language I think in and it’s the language that makes me feel the most detached to my characters. If I were to write in Spanish, I immediately go into this mode of envisioning myself in the character’s shoes, but English creates greater distance and allows me to live through another person’s eyes!”.

As a writer, what inspires her most is “knowing that there are no universal truths” and that each book she writes is adding to a Latinx fantasy canon that never existed during her childhood.

“ e thrill of discovering someone’s voice through their fears and dreams keeps my love of stories very much alive. My goal is to serve as just one example of what could be in this industry so that more people can see they can also take up shelf space, and do it without apology or restraint”, she said. And to her readers, her message is clear: to always claim their power of self. “Be gentle as you learn from mistakes, take as many de-

tours as needed on the path to nding who you really are, and hydrate!”.

Although Ortiz has published with multiple U.S. editorial houses, she admits that as an author based in Puerto Rico she faced some challenges, like getting access to professional events. “Knowing I can’t attend publishing/writing conferences, conventions, or bookstore launches as frequently as authors in the U.S. motivates me to connect online more and build a greater sense of community with the island’s readership”, she said. z

en la piel del protagonista y ngía estar pasando por lo mismo. Entonces me pregunté: ¿por qué alguien como yo no puede luchar también contra monstruos?”, explicó la autora. Esto la llevó a investigar mitos y leyendas locales, “aunque siempre me atrajo lo que la literatura occidental consideraba monstruoso, así que mis libros podrían considerarse una forma de expandir lo que ahora consideramos fantasía puertorriqueña”.

EN BUSCA DE DISTANCIA

Ortiz habla español en casa, pero escribe en inglés porque “es el idioma en el que pienso y el que me hace sentir más distanciada de mis personajes. Si escribiera en español, inmediatamente me pondría en la piel del personaje, pero el inglés crea una mayor distancia y me permite vivir a través de los ojos de otra persona”. Como escritora, lo que más le inspira es “saber que no hay verdades universales” y que cada libro que escribe se suma a un canon de fantasía latinx que nunca existió durante su infancia. A rmó que “la emoción de descubrir la voz de alguien a través de sus miedos y sueños mantiene muy vivo mi amor por las historias. Mi objetivo es ser sólo un ejemplo de lo que podría ser en esta industria, para que más gente vea que también puede ocupar un espacio en las estanterías, y hacerlo sin disculpas ni restricciones”.

Para sus lectores, su mensaje es claro: reivindicar siempre el poder de uno mismo. “Sé amable mientras aprendes de los errores, da tantos rodeos como sean necesarios en el camino de encontrar quién eres realmente, ¡e hidrátate!”, dijo.

Aunque Ortiz ha publicado con múltiples editoriales estadounidenses, admite que como autora a ncada en Puerto Rico, se enfrentó a algunos retos, como acceder a eventos profesionales. “Saber que no puedo asistir a conferencias, convenciones o presentaciones en librerías con la misma frecuencia que los autores de Estados Unidos, me motiva a conectarme más online y crear un mayor sentido de comunidad con los lectores de la isla”, concluyó.z

Ricardo Mogo Acevedo is among the group of Hispanics with a master’s degree in the country. He just nished a master’s degree in School Psychology and will begin his doctorate’s in the same eld in the fall.

Born in Venezuela, he moved to the United States — more speci cally Florida — around the age of 3. For being a rst generation immigrant, he always felt that it was expected for him to achieve huge things. Pursuing and doing more than just a bachelor’s degree has been with him since early on.

Almost 19% of masters degrees in 2021 were of Hispanic or Latino ethnicity, according to Zippia — only behind white, 61.7%. Just like for Mogo, a variety of challenges and experiences regarding culture, identity, career opportunities and more are in the way of these people who have successfully earned their quali cations.

Mogo moved a couple of times during his childhood and teenage years. Even though he lived in areas and attended

schools with some kind of diversity, they were mostly white. He always felt “very Hispanic” because his parents preserved their language and culture at home. He felt he identi ed with his roots, especially when surrounded by people who didn’t look like him.

However, in school it was totally di erent. Classmates would pick on him whenever he would share about his culture, food or music. It was di erent, it was weird for them. Mogo had to learn to adapt to his different worlds.

“At home my parents did a really good job of maintaining our culture but I couldn’t be how I was at home in public,” he said. “And then I couldn’t be how I was in public at home. at was di cult.”

Mogo attended the University of Central Florida (UCF), in Orlando, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Statistics. While he had more social contact with Latinos in college, the expectations for him in Hispanic relat-

Nacido en Venezuela, se trasladó a Florida (Estados Unidos) cuando tenía 3 años. Por ser un inmigrante de primera generación, siempre sintió que se esperaban de él grandes cosas, así que hacer algo más que una licenciatura siempre estuvo dentro de sus planes.

Casi el 19 % de los titulados de máster en el 2021 eran de etnia hispana o latina, según Zippia, solo por detrás de los blancos, con el 61,7 %. Al igual que para Mogo, una variedad de desafíos y experiencias en relación con la cultura, la identidad, las oportunidades de carrera, entre otros, se interponen en el camino de estas personas que han obtenido con éxito sus cali caciones.

Mogo se mudó un par de veces durante su infancia y adolescencia. Aunque vivió en zonas y asistió a escuelas con algún tipo de diversidad, en su mayoría eran blancas. Siem-

pre se sintió “muy hispano” porque sus padres conservaban su lengua y su cultura en casa. Se sentía identi cado con sus raíces, sobre todo cuando estaba rodeado de gente que no se parecía a él.

Sin embargo, en la escuela era totalmente diferente. Sus compañeros se metían con él cada vez que hablaba de su cultura, su comida o su música. Era diferente, era raro para ellos. Mogo tuvo que aprender a adaptarse a sus diferentes mundos. Según recuerda, “en casa, mis padres se esforzaban mucho por mantener nuestra cultura, pero yo no podía ser como era en casa en público, y, luego, no podía ser como era en público en casa. Era difícil”.

Mogo estudió en la Universidad de Florida Central, en Orlando, donde se licenció en Psicología con especialización en Estadística. Aunque tuvo más contacto social con latinos en la universidad, las expectativas para él en las actividades relacionadas con los hispanos eran mayores. ed activities were higher. As the only Latino in Spanish class, for example, his bar was set high — making it a challenging experience for him.

A er he graduated, in 2016, Mogo moved to Canada to work in the psychology eld. A er a year, he realized he couldn’t do much with just a bachelor’s degree in the eld, so he decided to go back to school.

According to the U.S. Census, only 19.7% of Latinos had a bachelor’s degree or higher in the United States, in 2021 — compared to 56% Asian, 38% White, and 25% Black.

He initially wanted to go clinical and become a doctor, but during an opportunity in school, teaching social emotional skills to children, he learned about school psychology and decided to stick with it. Conversations with professors who were part of the culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) programs allowed him to realize his importance in that kind of environment.

“I need to be there for kids like me,” he said. “If I had someone like me in my eld at my schools, maybe I would be so much better o .”

When he moved to Miami to pursue his masters, he was hit with another cultural challenge: “how not Spanish he is.”

“In a community that is very white, I stand out. I’m very ethnic and exotic,” he added. “In a primarily Latino/Hispanic community, I am more gringo than anything else.”

Although Miami was a cultural shock with him, the eld Mogo was going into had very little to no Hispanic or Latino representation — both in undergraduate and graduate programs. He credits it to the stigma around psychology and mental health, and the lack of terminology education among the Latino community about what is a mental health concern, problem, disorder and other variations — who chop it up to bad vibes, religion, or nerves, he said.

Described by Mogo as a white female monolingual eld, psychology needs representation. One of the bene ts he gets from being Latino is the connection he is able to make with bilingual kids — as he seems more approachable, considering their similar culture and background.

For the future, Mogo wants to be as useful as possible to his community. With master’s and doctorate’s degrees, he will be able to serve as a model for many children who are still unsure about what they are capable of.

“I hope to be in schools where my representation is needed,” he concluded. z

Aunque Miami supuso un choque cultural para él, el campo al que se dirigía tenía muy poca o ninguna representación hispana o latina, tanto en los programas de licenciatura como en los de posgrado. Ello lo atribuye al estigma que rodea a la psicología y a la salud mental y a la falta de educación terminológica entre la comunidad latina sobre lo que es una preocupación, un problema, un trastorno de salud mental y otras variaciones, que lo achacan a las malas vibraciones, la religión o los nervios.

Descrito por Mogo como un campo monolingüe de mujeres blancas, la psicología necesita representación. The homebuying market has seen some ebbs and flows over the past three years since the pandemic.

However, while the focus has been on the interest rates and selling prices, a key factor overlooked during this time is less competition.

This is due to the fact that the interest rates and selling prices have simply priced many out of the market.

As the spring 2023 homebuying season looms, WSFS Mortgage recently conducted a study of 1,032 Greater Philadelphia and Delaware region consumers and 1,000 consumers nationally between the ages of 25 and 65, to gauge potential homebuyers’ outlook heading into the season.

The new WSFS Mortgage Study found that while 28% of Greater Philadelphia and Delaware region residents are currently discouraged from searching for a new home due to the economic climate, about one-third still plan to look for a new home this year.

The top three reasons cited for holding off on their home search this year were home prices (65%), mortgage rates (57%), and recession concerns (41%).

“These are important factors to consider for homebuyers who were previously shut out of the homebuying market due to historic levels of demand driven by low rates and people’s desire for more space during and after the pandemic,” said Jeffrey M. Ru-

ben, President of WSFS Mortgage, in a statement.

However, about 42% of those who are likely to search for or buy a new home this year believe there are available homes they want, and 37% expect

Those who continued saving toward a home despite their previous frustrations may be rewarded this year as they face less competition for the homes they want,” Ruben added.

SAVING HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE FOR MANY

About 66% of regional residents said that higher everyday prices are making it hard for them to save for a new home or rental. Meanwhile, about 60% said that current rent payments make saving to buy a home difficult.

PLANS FOR CURRENT HOMEBUYERS VARY

About 55% plan to use the home equity they’ve built up, while 32% are planning to use it within the next year. Of those who plan to use their home equity, about 36% plan to use it to renovate or remodel their home, 35% plan to use it to purchase another home, and 26% plan to use their home equity to pay off non-mortgage debts.

Homeowners of color are more inclined to use their equity than white homeowners (63% to 51%); however, the majority of homeowners overall cite buying a home as a top reason to use their equity.

As potential homebuyers continue to weigh their options upon the dawn of the upcoming homebuying season, homebuying assistance programs are always a good option.

However, there are disparities within their utilization.

About 45% of people of color report having considered homebuyer assistance, compared to 26% of white buyers.

“While there are many local, state and federal programs designed to help homebuyers achieve this dream, coming up with upfront costs, such as down payment and closing expenses, can be challenging,” said Ruben. “While it is important for homebuyers to do their research, it

is equally, if not more, important that their lender work closely with them to identify programs their clients may be eligible for.”

The three remaining members of the original band — Julio Briceño, José Rafael Torres, and Juan Manuel — were joined by over 70 different collaborators for Cool Love, who are all displayed on the colorful album cover done by Venezuelan cartoonist Hermann Mejía.

Notable features include Betsayda Machado, El Pollo Brito, SuperThriller, C-Funk, Ferraz, and Álvaro Paiva-Bimbo. The collaborative nature of the project re ects the attitude Los Amigos Invisibles maintained throughout their career, connecting with artists in their native country and throughout the Latin American music community.

Although the band’s musical capabilities have been universally acknowledged, Los Amigos Invisibles may be best known for their live performances.

They’ve toured in 60 different countries, playing at marquee venues throughout the world. The high-energy and audience-centered essence of their performances sets the band further apart from other groups. During an interview with La Musica en VIVO, frontman Briceño explained the emphasis they’ve put on live performances throughout their career.

“For us the live show was very important. More than the record,” he said, noting they give 110% on stage for every show.

Education takes many forms. Traditional degrees, such as bachelor’s or master’s, o er structured pathways to knowledge and expertise. However, they are not the only means of acquiring education. Other forms of learning, such as associate degrees, trade schools, online learning, and free educational resources are crucial in empowering individuals to expand their skill sets and improve their lives.

Institute and trade schools provide practical, hands-on training for speci c industries, such as automotive, culinary, or healthcare. Graduates o en gain entry-level positions in their chosen eld, providing a stable income and growth opportunities.

Internet has revolutionized access to education. Online platforms o er courses and degree programs from renowned institutions, allowing learners to study at their own pace and schedule. Examples include Coursera, edX, and Udacity.

Free online education such as Saylor Academy, Khan Academy, and YouTube are accessible educational content treasure troves. From language lessons to coding tutorials, these platforms democratize education and make it accessible.

e pursuit of knowledge should not be limited to a particular period of life or the attainment of a degree. Instead, it should be a lifelong endeavor, with individuals continuously adapting and evolving. It may take years or even decades to reach certain milestones, but the goal is to keep moving forward, continually improving, and growing.

An essential aspect of lifelong learning is acquiring and sharing knowledge with others. You don’t need a formal degree or certi cation to teach or mentor others. By imparting your wisdom and experiences, you can contribute positively to the lives of those around you and create a culture of learning within your family and community.

Mentoring is a powerful way to give back to your community and help others grow. As a mentor, you provide guidance, support, and encouragement to those who may bene t from your experiences and knowledge. Here are some ways you can become a mentor.

First, the family. Start within your family by o ering your time and expertise to younger relatives who may need guidance or support in speci c areas, such as academics, career choices, or personal development.

Second, the workplace. O er to mentor junior colleagues in your organization, sharing your professional insights and helping them navigate the challenges they might face in their careers.

I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to my teenage mother, who instilled in me the importance of education despite our challenges. Dispute growing up in poverty and not having resources, my mother’s unwavering support and encouragement helped me overcome obstacles and set my sights on a brighter future.

Her determination to provide me with the best opportunities ignited my passion for learning and personal growth. is experience serves as a testament to the transformative power of education and its impact on individuals and families, regardless of their circumstances.

In conclusion, education is not merely about obtaining a degree or certi cation; it is about constant self-improvement and growth. By embracing lifelong learning, exploring diverse educational avenues, and sharing your knowledge with others, you can empower yourself and your community.
