or Varsovia Fernandez, it is important to leave a mark in whatever she does. She is Dominican. At age 12, she moved to Puerto Rico. From there she went to Philadelphia, in 1981, to study at Temple University.

“My first impression is that people did whatever they wanted,” she says about the differences she found between the United States, and Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

Also, she notes in the article that “the hardest thing as an immigrant when you come here is to not know and understand the systems. Whether it is the higher education system, or the Social Security system, or the medical system, it’s very different.”

In her first years in Philadelphia, she found that in the city there was not awareness about the immigrants. They even asked her if she was an Arab or Italian, and she had to clarify where she came from and where Dominican Republic was located. Where she lived very few people spoke Spanish, and she had to learn English quickly in order to communicate.

Varsovia is experienced in business and banking.

“I understood that economic development was the way to get out of poverty, and where I could make a difference,” she says. That is what gave her the opportunity to be the vice president of external affairs of Congreso de Latinos Unidos. There, she got involved in the immigration reform bill during the Bush administration.

After three years, she became the president and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, where she helped the companies of the region.

Her leadership took her to the education sector as part of Board of Trustees for the Community College of Philadelphia. Last January, she became the first Latin president of the Montgomery County Community College.

She says about the community colleges that they are a great place for single mothers. “They’re able to work and spend time with their children while they get an education without being judged,” she expresses.

AL DÍA also brings in this issue an article about Gabriel Barreto Bentin, a young Peruvian photographer, from New York, who is launching his project ‘Andinos: Encounters in Cusco, Peru,’ a different look from the stereotype of its inhabitants.

ara Varsovia Fernández lo importante es dejar huella en lo que se haga. Es dominicana. A los 12 años se fue con su familia a vivir a Puerto Rico.

De allí pasó a Filadelfia, en 1981, para estudiar en la Universidad de Temple.

“Mi primera impresión fue que la gente hacía lo que le daba la gana”, cuenta al referirse a las diferencias que encontró entre Estados Unidos con República Dominicana y Puerto Rico.

Además, en el reportaje de esta edición señala que “lo más difícil como inmigrante es no conocer y entender los sistemas, ya sea el sistema de educación superior o el sistema de Seguridad Social o el sistema médico, porque es muy diferente”.

En los primeros años en Filadelfia encontró que en la ciudad no había conciencia de los inmigrantes. Incluso, le preguntaban si era árabe o italiana y debía aclararles de dónde venía y en dónde quedaba República Dominicana. Además, en donde vivía, pocos hablaban español, por lo que debió aprender rápidamente inglés para poderse comunicar.

Varsovia tiene experiencia en negocios y banca. “Entendí que el desarrollo económico era la forma de salir de la pobreza y que era donde podía marcar la diferencia”, dice.

Efectivamente, eso la llevó a tener la oportunidad de ser la vicepresidenta de asuntos externos del Congreso de Latinos Unidos. Estar ahí le permitió involucrarse en el proyecto de ley de reforma migratoria durante la administración Bush.

Tras tres años, allí, se convirtió en presidenta y directora general de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Filadelfia, desde donde ayudó a las empresas de la región.

Su liderazgo la llevó también al sector educativo como parte del Consejo de Administración del Community College de Filadelfial. En enero pasado se convirtió en la primera presidenta latina de la junta del Montgomery County Community College.

De los colegios comunitarios dice que un gran lugar, por ejemplo, para las madres solteras. “Son capaces de trabajar y pasar tiempo con sus hijos mientras obtienen una educación sin ser juzgadas”, manifiesta.

En esta edición, AL DÍA también tiene el reportaje sobre Gabriel Barreto Bentin, joven fotógrafo peruano, desde Nueva York lanza su proyecto ‘Andinos: Encounters in Cusco, Peru’, una mirada diferente al estereotipo que hay de sus habitantes.

he annual AL DÍA Women of Merit event is a celebration of the tremendous contributions women make in leadership roles across the region.

During the 2022 edition of the event, a fireside chat featuring three prominent female leaders took place, where they discussed topics pertaining to female leadership in business and the workplace.

Moderated by Uva Coles, Chief Learning Officer at Spring Point Partners, she was joined on the stage by Susan Jacobson, Advisory Board Co-Chair for the event; and Jacqueline Hopkins, Senior Manager of Diversity & Inclusion at GoPuff.

Coles started the fireside chat by having the crowd take a breath and repeat the phrase, “Aquí estoy” or “I am here” as a moment of reflection.

FEMALE LEADERSHIP IN THE PANDEMIC

Jacobson is a groundbreaking leader, as she is the first woman to serve as board chair for the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce since 2002. She assumed the role in 2020 right before the pandemic.

When asked what it meant to take on that role during the pandemic, Jacobson started out by thanking AL DÍA for including a touching tribute to her mother, who recently passed away, in the program admitted that it was a little bit frightening. However, she knew she had a great responsibility and a lot of women looking at her to do a good job.

Among the things that she had to do in her role was picking an initiative.

Cuando se le preguntó qué significaba asumir esa función en esas circunstancias, Jacobson empezó agradeciéndole a AL DÍA por incluir un conmovedor homenaje a su madre, que falleció recientemente, y admitió que le causó un poco de temor.

Sin embargo, sabía que tenía una gran responsabilidad y que muchas mujeres tenían sus ojos puestos en ella esperando que hiciera un buen trabajo.

n next month’s Democratic primary election for Pennsylvania’s 3rd U.S. House District, residents will be able to vote for one of four candidates: incumbent Dwight Evans, Michael Cogbill, Alexandra Hunt, or Melvin Price.

Alexandra Hunt, the 28-year-old public health researcher and former sex worker, is running on a progressive platform and hoping to replace Evans in November’s general election.

Hunt’s twin brother has a learning disability, and growing up she witnessed firsthand the systemic obstacles he faced and this motivated her to become an advocate for all Philadelphians, regardless of their race, gender, class, or ability.

In an interview with AL DÍA, Hunt shared her long-winded story of ending up in the political arena, and more about the issues she is running on.

Hunt began her academic career at the University of Richmond and graduated in three years to save money. She then went straight to Drexel University to study medicine.

At first, Hunt’s big dream was to become a physician. When she went on medical trips to places such as Ghana and Ecuador, she witnessed jarring health disparities, and these experiences brought her down the path of public health.

Hunt began working at Fox Chase Cancer Center in their clinical research department, and took part-time classes at Temple University to get her master’s in public health.

A PANDEMIC-INSPIRED RUN

Throughout her academic and professional career, Hunt would repeatedly run into policy failure, particularly during the pandemic.

“I just saw all around me: policy failure. And then a lack of support on the ground and people really struggling, peo-

Hunt never envisioned herself running for office, and said that even now when someone googles her name and she comes up as a politician, it still makes her cringe.

“But I am someone who really wants to make a change and to see the world operate in a way that’s better for everyday people,” she said.

While Hunt was studying psychology and biology at the University of Richmond, she received financial aid, but she still needed to fill in the gaps financially.

During that time she had a few different jobs, she worked as a server, as a salesperson at Victoria’s Secret, and as a stripper.

Rather than shy away from this part of her past, Hunt decided to de-stigma-

tize the sex work industry by openly and unapologetically talking about her experiences.

Although this is an empowering decision, Hunt has lost contact with certain people who couldn’t accept this part of her past, which was difficult for her to make peace with. But Hunt continued to move forward and focus on the bigger issues at stake.

What Hunt wants her potential supporters and future constituents to know about sex workers is that they are just regular people trying their best to make ends meet.

Housing, childcare, education, and healthcare are all very expensive, and yet Pennsylvania’s minimum wage hasn’t budged since 2008.

THE ISSUES

Hunt is running on several crucial issues, including medicare for all, crim-

n Monday, April 4, Senate leaders reached an agreement to pass bipartisan legislation that would provide $10 billion in COVID-19 response funding, but the operations have been halted due to a political fight over immigration.

This quarrel is potentially delaying the White House’s requested money for weeks. The battle deals with the Biden administration’s choice to end a pandemic policy known as Title 42, which permits U.S. officials to turn away asylum-seekers at the border for public health reasons.

GOP senators demanded that amendments be made to the legislation that would revoke Biden’s move and reinstate Title 42.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer warned Republicans on Tuesday, April 5 not to “hold the bill hostage” by insisting on a vote to amend the bill.

“The bottom line is this is a bipartisan agreement that does a whole lot of good for the American people: Vaccines, testing, therapeutics. It should

Schumer negotiated the package with Sen. Mitt Romney and agreed to drop billions of dollars for a global vaccination effort in order to pick up GOP support, but it apparently wasn’t enough.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters that he will insist on allowing an amendment vote to restore Title 42, which the Biden administration announced last week it would lift.

The White House has urged Congress to pass the funding as quickly as possible, warning that money for vaccines and testing is drying up as a new variant threatens the nation.

n the eyes of many outside Latin America, especially in the U.S., Costa Rica has long been a model of stability in the region. That image is propped up by the country’s green economy and booming tourism industry, but there have been some cracks of late in the foundations that were only amplified by the pandemic.

As a result, in the recent run-off of the country’s presidential elections, held on Sunday, April 3, voters picked rightwing economist Rodrigo Chaves as its new leader.

Chaves beat centrist Jose Maria Figueres with 53% of the vote, as both went into the final round promising to flip the trend in Costa Rica. They were just two of 25 candidates vying for president in the initial election held on Feb. 6, where Figueres won the highest percentage of votes at 27.3%. Chaves was a surprise in second place, with 16.7%.

In addition to an unemployment rate that has steadily increased for more than a decade, Costa Rica’s poverty rate has also risen to 23% and its public debt is now 70% of its gross domestic product.

Going into the election, the 3.5 million eligible voters pinpointed unemployment, corruption, and rising living costs as their biggest issues.

After the crowded initial election, which saw no candidate reach the necessary 40% of the vote to win the presidency, only 58% of the total eligible voters in the country participated in the runoff, which could be a major reason why Chaves was able to make his improbable run.

Esa imagen, que se sostiene debido a la economía verde del país y la floreciente industria del turismo, ha tenido algunas grietas en sus bases, que se han profundizado con la pandemia.

Una situación que condujo a que en la segunda vuelta de las elecciones del país, que tuvieron lugar el domingo 3 de abril, los votantes eligieran al economista de derecha Rodrigo Chaves para ser su nuevo líder.

Chaves venció al candidato de centro José María Figueres con el 53 % de los votos, al entrar en ronda final donde los dos prometieron cambiar la tendencia en Costa Rica.

Ellos fueron dos de los 25 candidatos que contendieron por la presidencia en las primeras elecciones del 6 de febrero, donde Figueres ganó con un 27.3 %, el porcentaje más alto en la votación. Chaves con un con un 16.7 % ganó sorpresivamente el segundo lugar.

Además del índice de desempleo que ha aumentado de manera constante por más de una década, la pobreza en Costa Rica también ha subido al 23 %, y su deuda pública es ahora del 70 % de su producto interno bruto.

Al entrar en las elecciones, 3.5 millones de votantes elegibles señalaron el desempleo, la corrupción y el costo de vida cada vez más alto como los temas más importantes.

Después de las repletas primeras elecciones, donde no hubo candidatos que alcanzaran el 40 % de los votos para ganar la presidencia, solo el 58 % de los votantes registrados en el país participaron en la segunda vuelta, que podría ser la razón más importante por la cual Chaves pudo lograr su improbable victoria.

For one, his previous post at the World Bank had him come into the race as an outsider disconnected from the perceived corrupt establishment politics of the country. He exploited the discontent with that establishment to brand himself a maverick and rise in the polls.

Chaves also waged war on the news media of the country, which highlighted some scandals of his past.

Back at the World Bank, where he was for 30 years, Chaves was accused of sexual harassment in a number of incidents between 2008 and 2013. A tribunal’s finding released in 2021 criticized the way the situation was handled internally. To this point Chaves has denied all allegations he’s faced.

Figueres, his opponent in the runoff, also faced corruption charges from his previous tenure as president from 1994 to 1998.

Upon winning the presidency, Chaves gave a little insight into what his approach to Costa Rica’s highest office

will be given he has no prior political experience. He will take office on May 8.

“For me, this is not a medal nor a trophy, but rather an enormous responsibility, heaped with challenges and difficulties that we will all resolve,” he said.

ONE DOWN, TWO TO GO

Chaves’ victory is also one that could send shockwaves across Latin America, as he is the first victor of three elections to be held across the region in 2022.

The other two countries to go to the polls and pick their next president and legislature are Colombia and Brazil.

The former held its primary election on March 13, and saw what could be the beginning of a new left for the country and Latin America as former guerrilla member Gustavo Petro won handily.

The first round of presidential elections will be on May 29.

Like Costa Rica, Brazil also has a big field of candidates in its presidential race, but incumbent Jair Bolsonaro and criminally-cleared former President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva are the frontrunners.z

alto de Costa Rica al no tener experiencia política.

VA UNO, QUEDAN DOS

La victoria de Chaves además podría tener influencia en Latinoamérica, por ser el primero en tener la victoria de otras tres elecciones que se llevarán a cabo en la región en el 2022.

Los otros dos países en ir a las urnas y escoger a su próximo presidente y legislatura son Colombia y Brasil. En Colombia se celebraron las elecciones primarias el 13 de marzo, donde se vio lo que podría ser el inicio de una nueva izquierda para el país y para América Latina con la fácil victoria del ex miembro de la guerilla Gustavo Petro. La primera vuelta de las elecciones presidenciales será el 29 de mayo.

Al igual que Costa Rica, Brasil también tiene un gran cantidad de candidatos en para las elecciones presidenciales, pero el presidente en ejercicio, Jair Bolsonaro, y el absuelto ex presidente Luis Inácio Lula da Silva encabezan la lista.z

It’s something she carries with her in everything she does, in every room she enters, and in every role she’s filled throughout her executive career.

Growing up, Fernandez really enjoyed horseback riding, going to the river, and riding her bicycle, all of which, she noted, are very popular in Latin America.

The young Fernandez was always interested in watching her older brother, who used to rally, work on his car.

The more she was pushed away due to the idea that motorsports were “not for girls,” the more interested she became in getting involved.

It was there that she developed one of her first passions for cars.

While in the Dominican Republic, Fernandez also became very involved in sports. She began playing volleyball in the third grade.

At the age of 12, she and her family moved to Puerto Rico.

While there, she continued to play volleyball all the way through her first year of college, and also ran marathons during high school.

After finishing middle and high school in Puerto Rico, Fernandez came to Philadelphia for college, originally at Temple University.

A NEW COUNTRY

We had a lot of Latino businesses and a lot of Latino professionals, but there was no market, it was not being acknowledged.

When Fernandez arrived in the United States, it didn’t take long to see some of the differences between U.S. culture and her home on the islands.

“My first impression was that people did whatever they wanted to do,” said Fernandez.

In college, she remembers seeing everyone wear shorts and flip-flops to school while she showed up with jeans, high heels and makeup on her first day.

In Puerto Rico, she learned to read and write in English in school, but the opportunities to speak it weren’t there.

In addition to the fact that her sister was already living in the U.S., Fernandez credited her ability to build relationships as a big reason for her ability to adapt to a new country.

However, she understood that not every immigrant has that access or ability.

“I think the hardest thing as an immigrant when you come here is to not know and understand the systems,” said Fernandez. “Whether it is the higher education system, or the Social Security system, or the medical system, it’s very different.”

When Fernandez first came to Philadelphia in 1981, she noted that many people in the city didn’t have much exposure to immigrants.

She recalls people asking her if she was Italian or Middle Eastern, often having to tell people she was Hispanic, and explain where the Dominican Republic was.

“I have seen Philadelphia evolve as an immigrant city,” she said.

During her second year in college, Fernandez settled in the suburbs — where she found even less Hispanics and other immigrants.

“This made it even harder because there was nobody speaking Spanish,” she said. “But what it did do for me was teach me English.”

“And I always tell my immigrant friends and people who I have worked with, ‘you have to learn English,’” Fernandez added, noting that the ability to communicate is among the most basic and essential skills to getting the things you want and need.

REPRESENTING HISPANICS IN PHILADELPHIA

With her background in business and banking, Fernandez developed a keen interest and understanding of economic development and its value.

“I understood that economic development was the way to get out of poverty, and where I could make a difference,” she said.

This mindset and subsequent search for a career opportunity in economic development eventually led Fernandez to join Congreso de Latinos Unidos as its vice president of external affairs.

“When I got to Congreso, it became extremely important because I had such a wealth of knowledge in building relationships and also in what was available to the community,” she said.

During her time with the organization, she also became nationally involved in the immigration reform bill during the Bush administration.

“My immigrant experience was very helpful during my work at Congreso,” she said.

Through those experiences, Fernandez noted that she “fell into leadership” due to a group of men and women who believed in her and her abilities. Howev-

PORTADA er, she also understood that not every immigrant is provided those opportunities.

As someone who has navigated the U.S. without having to deal with being undocumented, Fernandez understands the difference it makes, noting that being documented has been very helpful in blending into a corporate setting.

“I’ve done with a lot of work with the undocumented and it feels unsafe, the way I understand it from their story, to not have that legal status,” said Fernandez.

After nearly three years with Congreso, that leadership transitioned to her becoming the President & CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

There, she helped represent and grow the region’s Hispanic-owned businesses.

It was an endeavor that was very important to her because she felt she could relate to the Hispanic business community.

And it paid dividends.

“We created the Hispanic market,” said Fernandez, about her time with the Chamber. “We had a lot of Latino businesses and a lot of Latino professionals, but there was no market, it was not being acknowledged.”

Today, Philadelphia has among the most thriving Latino business communities in the nation. That was in large part due to Fernandez’s dedication to increasing that visibility.

THE LATINA IN THE ROOM

Beyond her work with Congreso and the Chamber, Fernandez has also worked in white, male-dominated industries, as well.

In some instances, she was the only woman, Latina or people of color in the room.

In those settings, she always aims to be a representative for those who are not in the room.

“I always walk in a place knowing who I was and what I could do,” said Fernandez.

However, doing so was not always easy.

“I had a couple of experiences where I was treated like a woman, not like a person,” she said. “I was treated like a Hispanic, not like an American.”

While she navigated through those challenges, it also became clear that she wanted to do something about it.

Fernandez would then share resources and provide the region’s Latino community with the information needed to excel in their careers, and ultimately, their lives.

BREAKING BARRIERS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Fernandez is very passionate about community colleges.

During her own educational journey, community college served as a lifetime for her.

“One of the reasons why I love community colleges is because it’s a great place for women, for single moms to go part-time or full-time. They’re able to work and spend time with their children while they get an education without being judged and getting a support system through wellness services that allows them to actually become more educated and get better jobs,” said Fernandez.

“It’s very difficult to accomplish that in a four-year school,” she added.

When Fernandez was forced to drop out of Temple, the opportunity to take some classes part-time at a community college, as a single mother herself, was crucial as a bridge to eventually returning full-time student and ultimately earning her degree at Rosemont College, and later continue to further her education.

Therefore, it was important for her to get involved and be a voice for promoting the value of community colleges in pro-

viding an affordable path to higher education, particularly for students of color like herself.

This led Fernandez to joining the Board of Trustees for the Community College of Philadelphia.

During her time on the Board, Fernandez became one of the main catalysts for the College having its first-ever celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month — now the Hispanic Heritage Month Annual Luncheon.

“It’s pretty amazing,” noted Fernandez.

Years later, Fernandez joined the Board of the Montgomery County Community College. In January 2022, she became the first Latina board chair for the College.

While her focus always remains on doing what is right and best for the students and not too much about being “the first,” it’s still a distinction she had great pride in.

“It means a lot,” she said. “in that I have to live up to being a role model. And I hope it serves as inspiration.”

En su niñez, Fernández disfrutaba mucho de montar a caballo, ir al río y pasear en bicicleta, todas actividades populares en Latinoamérica.

La joven Fernández siempre se interesó en ver a su hermano mayor, al que le gustaban las carreras, trabajar en su automóvil. Entre más se le alejaba con la idea de que los deportes de motor “no eran para niñas”, más era el interés de participar en ellos.

Fue en ese momento donde se desarrolló su pasión por los autos.

Cuando vivía en República Dominicana, Fernández además empezó a participar mucho más en los deportes, y desde tercer grado inició con el vóleibol.

A los 12 años, se mudó a Puerto Rico junto con su familia.

Estando allí, compitió en maratones durante la secundaria y continuó jugando vóleibol hasta su primer año de universidad.

Luego de concluir sus estudios medios y de secundaria en Puerto Rico, Fernández llegó a Filadelfia para iniciar sus estudios

superiores, que en un principio iban a ser en Temple University.

UN NUEVO PAÍS

Al llegar a los Estados Unidos, Fernández no tardó mucho en darse cuenta de las diferencias entre la cultura de los Estados Unidos y lo que fue su hogar en las islas.

“Mi primera impresión fue que las personas hacía lo que querían”, dijo Fernández.

Recuerda que en la universidad vio a todos usar shorts y chanclas mientras ella en su primer día fue vestida de jeans, tacones altos y con maquillaje.

Aprendió a leer y escribir en inglés en Puerto Rico, pero no había oportunidades de hablar el idioma allí.

Además del hecho de que su hermana ya estaba viviendo en Estados Unidos, Fernández le dio el crédito de poder adaptarse a un nuevo país a la habilidad de su hermana de ser buena para relacionarse; aunque entendió que no todos los inmigrantes tienen ese talento o habilidad.

“Creo que lo más difícil de ser inmigrante cuando llegas aquí es no conocer o entender cómo funcionan los sistemas”, dijo Fernández. “Ya sea el sistema de educación superior o el sistema de seguridad social o el sistema de servicios médicos, todo es muy diferente”.

Cuando Fernández llegó a Filadelfia en 1981, se dio cuenta de que muchas personas de la ciudad no tenían mucho contacto con los inmigrantes.

Recuerda que le preguntaban si era italiana o del Medio Oriente, a lo que con frecuencia respondía que era hispana, y explicaba donde quedaba la República Dominicana.

“He visto cómo Filadelfia ha convertido en una ciudad de inmigrantes”, dijo.

En su segundo año de universidad, Fernández se estableció en los suburbios —donde había aun menos hispanos u otros inmigrantes.

“Fue más difícil para mí porque nadie hablaba español”, dijo. “Pero lo que la situación sí hizo por mí fue enseñarme inglés”.

“Siempre les digo a mis amigos inmigrantes y a las personas con las que he trabajado, ‘tienes que aprender inglés’”, Fernández agregó, resaltando que la habilidad de comunicarse es de las destrezas más básicas y esenciales para poder conseguir las cosas que quieres y que necesitas.

REPRESENTANDO A LOS HISPANOS EN FILADELFIA

Con su formación en negocios y banca, Fernández desarrolló un agudo interés y entendimiento del desarrollo económico y de su valor.

“Entendí que el desarrollo económico era la manera de salir de la pobreza, y que era el área donde yo podía hacer la diferencia”, dijo.

Esta perspectiva y la posterior búsqueda de oportunidades profesionales en desarrollo económico llevaron a Fernández a unirse al Congreso de Latinos Unidos como vicepresidente de asuntos externos.

“Fue algo extremadamente importante cuando llegué a Congreso porque tenía

Durante el tiempo que duró en la organización, participó de lleno a nivel nacional en el proyecto de reforma migratoria durante la administración Bush.

“Mi experiencia como inmigrante fue muy útil durante mi trabajo en Congreso”, dijo.

Mediante esas experiencias, Fernández anotó que “fue a dar al liderazgo” gracias a un grupo de hombres y mujeres que creyeron en ella y en sus habilidades. Sin embargo, también entendió que no a todos los inmigrantes se les dan esas oportunidades.

Como alguien que ha podido desenvolverse en los Estados Unidos sin tener que lidiar con ser indocumentada, Fernández entiende cómo esto hace la diferencia, y resalta que tener documentos ha sido muy útil a la hora de integrarse en un ambiente corporativo.

“He trabajado mucho con personas indocumentadas y, como lo veo a partir de sus historias, no tener un estatus legal trae un sentimiento de inseguridad”, dijo Fernández.

Después de casi tres años en Congreso, hubo una transición en su liderazgo al ser la presidente y directora de la Cámara de Comercio del Área Metropolitana de Filadelfia.

Allí, ayudó a representar y hacer crecer los negocios de propiedad de hispanos.

Fue una tarea muy importante porque sintió que se identificaba con la comunidad empresarial hispana.

Y esto dio sus frutos.

“Creamos un mercado hispano”, dijo Fernández acerca del tiempo que estuvo en la Cámara de Comercio. “Teníamos muchos negocios latinos y muchos profesionales latinos, pero no había mercado, no se les reconocía”.

Filadelfia tiene hoy una de las comunidades de negocios latinos más prósperas de la nación, y en parte se ha debido a la dedicación de Fernández por aumentar esa visibilidad.

LA ÚNICA LATINA DEL LUGAR

Dejando aparte su trabajo en Congreso y en la Cámara, Fernández trabajó también, en industrias dominadas por hombres.

En algunas ocasiones, era la única mujer, latina o persona de color en el lugar.

En ambientes así, siempre ha buscado representar a los que no están presentes.

“Siempre que entro en una sala, sé quién soy y lo que puedo lograr”, dijo Fernández.

Pero, no eso no siempre fue fácil.

“Tuve un par de experiencias donde me trataron como una mujer, no como una persona”, dijo. “Me trataban como hispana, no cómo estadounidense”.

Al sortear esos desafíos, también tuvo muy en claro que quería hacer algo al respecto.

Por lo cual Fernández posteriormente compartió sus recursos y proporcionó a la comunidad latina de la región la información necesaria para triunfar en sus carreras, y por lo tanto, en sus vidas.

Rompiendo barreras en la educación superior Fernández es una apasionada de los community colleges.

Durante sus años de formación, el community college le sirvió mucho a su vida.

“Una de las razones por las que me encantan los community colleges es porque son lugares excelentes para las mujeres y las madres solteras, donde ellas pueden ir medio tiempo o tiempo completo. Pueden trabajar y pasar tiempo con sus hijos mientras reciben una educación sin ser juzgadas, y tener un sistema de soporte a través de servicios de bienestar, que les permitan recibir más educación y conseguir mejores trabajos”, dijo Fernández.

“Es difícil lograr eso en una institución con programas de 4 años”, agregó.

Cuando Fernández se vio obligada a dejar sus estudios en Temple, la oportunidad de tomar algunas clases de medio tiempo en el community college, siendo ella misma una madre soltera, fue crucial como puente para luego regresar como estudiante de tiempo completo, y al final recibir su título en Rosemont College, y continuar su educación.

Por eso, era importante para ella participar y ser la voz que promoviera el valor de los community colleges, ya que proporcionan una ruta hacia la educación superior, en particular para estudiantes e color como ella.

Esto llevó a Fernández a unirse al consejo administrativo del Community College de Filadelfia.

Durante su permanencia en el concejo, Fernández se volvió uno de los catalizadores para la primera celebración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana, hoy llamado Almuerzo Anual del Mes de la Herencia Hispana.

“Es fantástico”, dijo Fernández.

Años más tarde, Fernández se unió al concejo del Community College del Conda-

do de Montgomery. En enero de 2022, se convirtió en la primera latina en ser presidenta del concejo del college.

Aunque su enfoque es el de hacer lo correcto y lo mejor para los estudiantes, y no tanto ser “el primero”, es una distinción de la que se siente muy orgullosa.

“Significa mucho”, dice, “en el sentido de que tengo que estar a la altura de ser un modelo a seguir, y espero que sirva como inspiración”.

UNA HERENCIA SIEMPRE CAMBIANTE

Al reflexionar acerca de su legado, Fernández resalta que es cambiante.

Lo que sí permanece es su deseo de obrar de manera correcta y dejar huella en el mundo.

“Creo que ya lo he logrado de muchas maneras”, dijo.

Pero a ojos de Fernández, su trabajo está lejos de acabar. z

abriel Barreto Bentín remembers when he was in the seventh grade, his English teacher, Charo Castañeda, asked him if he had ever taken photographs before. He hadn’t, but for some reason answered “yes” with complete confidence, which led her to offer him a job as the photographer for her student-led Summer Camp. From then on, he took his camera everywhere, from family trips to school and even to friends’ birthday parties.

“Photography for me is a way of life. I have been living, studying, working, traveling, and networking with a camera strap around my neck ever since I can remember,” the renowned fashion photographer explained via email.

He is currently based in New York, where he moved to study Photography and Video at the School of Visual Arts.

“Nowadays, I see myself using photography as a sort of passport that allows me to explore the lives and personalities of the people that surround me,” he added.

It is precisely in this artistic vein — of approaching the reality of people through the camera — is where his latest work is situated: Andinos: Encounters in Cusco, Peru , is a photobook that brings together a collection of intimate portraits of the inhabitants of the Andean region of Cuzco that try to break with the clichés traditional postcards of the Andes have sold us for years.

“Right after I finished high school, in 2016, my uncle and I went on a road trip from Lima to Cusco for a month. During this trip, my idea of what it meant to be from the Andes was instantly challenged. I had grown up viewing the Andes through a very problematic dichotomy,” he said, explaining the origins of the project.

On one hand, “The Perfect Postcard” shows the Andes as a magical, lost-in-time place, and the Andinos as pure and almost magical people who are a static version of old folk tales. On the other, Barreto says in “The Image of the Poor,” we can observe an insensitive and antiquated postcolonial narrative elaborated by the people of the capital to project a sense of superiority over those who did not inhabit the economic center of the country.”

“Throughout the years working on this project I was always motivated by the fact that I could fight these perspectives and introduce outsiders to what it means to be a contemporary Andino in the region of Cusco, Peru,” said Barreto

abriel Barreto Bentín recuerda que cuando estudiaba séptimo grado, su profesora de inglés le preguntó si alguna vez había hecho fotos. Tendría que haber respondido que “no”, pero respondió que “sí” con total confianza, lo que llevó a la profesora a ofrecerle un puesto de fotógrafo en el campamento de verano que ella organizaba. Desde ese momento, Barreto empezó a llevar su cámara a todas partes, desde viajes de familia a la escuela, pasando por fiestas de cumpleaños de amigos.

“Para mí la fotografía es un medio de vida. He estado viviendo, estudiando, trabajando y relacionándome con una cámara colgada al cuello desde que tengo uso de memoria”, explica este reconocido fotógrafo de moda radicado en Nueva York, donde se mudó para estudiar Fotografía y Vídeo en la School of Visual Arts y ha decidido quedarse.

“Para mí la fotografía es como un pasaporte que me permite explorar las vidas y personalidades de la gente que me rodea”, dice Barreto, quien nació en Lima hace 26 años.

En esa línea artística -la de acercarse a la realidad de gente a través de la cámara- se sitúa precisamente su último trabajo: Andinos: Encounters in Cusco, Peru (Rizzo, 2022), un libro que reúne una colección de retratos íntimos de los habitantes de la región andina de Cusco que tratan de romper con los tópicos que nos han vendido durante años las postales tradicionales de los Andes.

“Justo después de terminar el instituto, en 2016, mi tío y yo hicimos un viaje juntos en coche durante un mes, desde Lima hasta Cusco. Durante ese viaje, mi idea de lo que significaba ser originario de los Andes cambió al instante”, explica Barreto, recordando los motivos que lo impulsaron a este proyecto.

Su estancia en Cusco le sirvió para darse cuenta de que su visión del pueblo andino hasta entonces había estado muy marcada por una dicotomía problemática: por un lado, “la postal perfecta” que muestra los Andes como un lugar mágico y perdido en el tiempo, y a los andinos “como una gente pura y casi mágica, como si fueran una versión estática de antiguas historias folclóricas”. Y por otro lado, “la imagen de los pobres” basada en una “narrativa postcolonial, insensible y anticuada, elaborada por la gente de la capital para proyectar un sentido de superioridad sobre los que no habitan en el centro económico de la ciudad”, indica.

Barreto señala que “durante los años que trabajé en este proyecto, siempre me motivó el hecho de que podía luchar contra esos clichés e introducir una nueva mirada en lo que significa ser un andino contemporáneo en la región de Cusco”.

ELIMINATING THE LANDSCAPE

To combat these clichés, Barreto chose to eliminate the landscape behind his subjects, so his characters emerge from a white background, reflecting the diversity of Andean society only through their faces, attire, and professions.

In this sense, the influence of Richard Avedon, an American photographer of the last century whom Barreto discovered upon returning from his initial trip to Cusco, was key. Avedon spent years portraying people in the American West using a white background to decontextualize them from the place they inhabited. Another photographer who greatly influenced his project was Martin Chambi, the most renowned indigenous photographer of the 20th century, known for his pioneering photographs of Machu Picchu taken in the 1930s.

“Chambi’s photographs transport us into the reality of the Andes, without any romance or pretension, to show what day-to-day life was like,” explained Barreto.

Chambi’s ability to relate to his subjects was highly important for his work, “since I was looking to build a relationship with the people I wanted to photograph before even taking out the camera.”

The photographs in the book are accompanied by brief interviews with the people of Cusco, in which they are invited to comment on those portrayed in terms of their clothing and appearances, so they can talk about themselves and reveal what modern Cusco society is like today, a society that is not free of internal racism and social hierarchies.

“In general, people around the world are used to seeing cultures outside of their own as a stereotype. In the case of Latin America, many of our cultures have been used in a very romanticized way in everything from Hollywood movies to advertising campaigns. Our challenge as Latinos is to fight for the demystification of our cultures by showcasing real people and real stories with the honor and respect they deserve,” said Barreto.

He is convinced as a Latin American, that it is no longer necessary to move to Europe or the United States to succeed as a photographer.

“I think photography, like any other artistic medium, is a field where success is impossible to measure.

A very important aspect of my photography is to help bring awareness about Peruvian culture to the world.

To achieve that most of my projects will be published abroad, but that is by no means the only nor the best way to be ‘successful,’” he added.

Based in New York, a city he calls home, Barreto is thinking about his future projects, which are likely to be about bringing contemporary Peruvian culture to an international market.

“I have always been enormously curious about the Amazon rainforest and the communities that live in it.

It’s still just an idea in my head, but I would love to explore what it means to live in an indigenous community in the Amazon in today’s world,” he said. z

ELIMINAR EL PAISAJE

Para luchar contra esos estereotipos, Barreto optó por eliminar el paisaje detrás de los fotografiados, de manera que sus personajes emergen de un fondo blanco, reflejando la diversidad de la sociedad andina únicamente a través de sus rostros, atuendos y profesiones.

En este sentido, la influencia de Richard Avedon, fotógrafo americano del siglo pasado que Barreto descubrió al regresar de su viaje inicial a Cusco, fue clave. Avedon se pasó años retratando a personas del oeste americano utilizando un fondo blanco para descontextualizarlos del lugar en el que habitaban.

Otro fotógrafo que ha influido mucho en su proyecto ha sido Martin Chambi, el fotógrafo indígena más destacado del siglo XX, conocido por sus fotografías pioneras de Machu Picchu tomadas en los años 30.

“Las fotografías de Chambi nos transportan a la realidad de los Andes sin romanticismo ni pretensiones, para mostrar cómo era la vida cotidiana de sus habitantes”, explica Barreto. Chambi intentaba crear un vínculo con el sujeto fotografiado, algo que para él ha sido muy importante, “ya que mi objetivo era establecer una relación con las personas que quería fotografiar antes incluso de sacar la cámara”, manifiesta.

Las fotografías del libro van acompañadas de breves entrevistas con los cusqueños, en las que se les invita a comentar a los retratados en función de sus vestimentas y apariencias con el fin de que fueran los que hablaran sobre ellos mismos y desvelaran lo que es hoy la sociedad moderna de Cusco, que no está libre de racismo interno y jerarquías sociales.

“En general, la gente está acostumbrada a ver las culturas ajenas a la suya como estereotipos. En el caso de América Latina, muchas de nuestras culturas han sido demasiado romantizadas, tanto por Hollywood como por la publicidad. Nuestro reto como latinos es luchar por la desmitificación de nuestras culturas mostrando personas e historias reales con el honor y el respeto que merecen”, dice Barreto, convencido de que, como latinoamericano, ya no es necesario mudarse a Europa o Estados Unidos para tener éxito como fotógrafo.

“Creo que la fotografía, como cualquier otro medio artístico, es un campo en el que el éxito es imposible de medir. Un aspecto muy importante de mi fotografía es ayudar a dar a conocer la cultura peruana al mundo. Para conseguirlo, la mayoría de mis proyectos se publican en el extranjero, pero esa no es en absoluto la única ni la mejor manera de tener ‘éxito’”, aclara el fotógrafo peruano, que considera a Nueva York su hogar. Todavía no tiene claro cuál será su próximo proyecto, pero seguro tendrá que ver con la cultura peruana.

“Siempre he sentido una enorme curiosidad por la selva amazónica y las comunidades que viven en ella. Me encantaría explorar lo que significa vivir en una comunidad indígena del Amazonas hoy en día”, señala.z • 23

artagena de Indias, in the Colombian Caribbean, has seen some figures that have enriched its history: La India Catalina, the mediator between Spaniards and indians; Simon Bolivar, the great Liberator, and Antonio Nariño, the forefather of independence.

But there is also Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta. Born in Spain in 1689, he joined the navy at age 15 and he took part in the naval battle waged in front of the coasts of Malaga, in the summer of 1704, between a Bourbon fleet and an Anglo-Dutch fleet during the Succession War. During combat, Blas de Lezo lost his left leg, smashed by a cannon bullet. Some time later, in 1707, in another combat at the naval base of Toulon against the British, a flying shard injured his left eye. On site in Barcelona, one of the last episodes of the Succession War, he suffered a third wound that made his right arm completely lose mobility.

With only one leg, one eye and without a hand, Blas de Lezo came to be known as the “Pegleg Admiral” or the “Half-man.”

THE GREAT BATTLE

In 1737, he arrived to America as the general commander of Cartagena de Indias, which he had to defend from the attacks of British Admiral Edward Vernon. Cartagena was the center of American commerce, where the riches of Spanish colonies came together.

The British, eager to conquer the territory, used an affront to their empire as an excuse to take the city. It was the assault to a British ship, the Rebecca, whose owner was a smuggler and which had been

a historia de Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, ha estado llena de personajes curiosos que han enriquecido los cuentos alrededor de la ciudad.

La India Catalina como mediadora entre españoles e indígenas, Simón Bolívar como el gran libertador y Antonio Nariño como precursor de la independencia. Pero si hay una llamativa historia que se cuenta en la ciudad es la de Blas de Lezo.

Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta nació en España en 1689 y se vinculó a la Marina a los quince años cuando participó en la batalla naval que se libró frente a las costas de Málaga en el verano de 1704 entre una flota borbónica y una escuadra anglo-holandesa durante la guerra de Sucesión.

En aquel combate, a Blas de Lezo tuvieron que amputarle la pierna izquierda, destrozada por una bala de cañón. Poco después, en 1707, en otro combate librado en la base naval de Tolón contra los ingleses, una esquirla de metralla le malogró el ojo izquierdo. En el sitio a Barcelona, uno de los últimos episodios de la guerra de Sucesión, sufrió una tercera herida que le dejó inservible el brazo derecho. Así, y tras quedarse cojo, tuerto y sin mano, Blas de Lezo pasó a ser conocido como el “Almirante Patapalo” o el “Medio-hombre”.

LA GRAN BATALLA

En 1737 volvió a América como comandante general de Cartagena de Indias, plaza que tuvo que defender de los ataques del almirante inglés Edward Vernon.

Cartagena era el centro del comercio americano y donde confluían las riquezas de las colonias españolas. Los británicos, ansiosos de conquistar el territorio, aprovecharon una afrenta a su imperio para intentar tomar la ciudad. El pretexto fue el asalto a un buque británico propiedad de un contrabandista británico cuyo barco, el Rebecca, había sido apresado en abril de 1731 por un guardacostas español que le confiscó su carga.

CULTURA ENGLISH seized on April of 1731 by a Spanish coast guard who confiscated its cargo.

The British put together a terrific fleet never seen before under the command of British Admiral Edward Vernon. The navy was formed by 195 ships, 3,000 cannons and some 25,000 British supported by 4,000 American soldiers. In 1741, the defense in Cartagena did not go above 3,000 men, 600 indians armed with arrows, and six war ships from the marine corps.

After a hard combat, Vernon was finally defeated and abandoned the waters of Cartagena with 5,000 dead British, according to official reports. Shame was such that measures were taken to silence the defeat: King George II prohibited the information from being published about the battle.

This was the biggest victory of Blas de Lezo, which freed the city from being governed by the British.

Blas de Lezo died on Sept 7 suffering physical and emotional pain, because the viceroy had incriminated him for the disasters of the siege. Later, he received the recognition of the Crown, and his oldest son was given, in 1762, the title of marquis of Ovieco.

Two centuries later, on Sept. 7 of 1955, a statue donated by the Spanish government in honor of Blas de Lezo was erected in Cartagena, and can be found near Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas fortress. z

Tras duros combates, finalmente, Vernon abandonó derrotado las aguas de Cartagena con unos 5.000 ingleses muertos, según los datos oficiales. La vergüenza fue tan tal para el país que se tomaron medidas para acallar la derrota: El rey Jorge II prohibió todo tipo de publicación sobre la batalla.

Esta victoria fue la más importante de Blas de Lezo y la que libró a la ciudad de ser gobernada por los ingleses.

Sin embargo, a pesar de la victoria, Blas de Lezo murió el 7 de septiembre en medio de dolores físicos y morales, ya que el virrey le había inculpado por los desastres del asedio. Pero tiempo después recibió el merecido reconocimiento de la Corona y a su hijo mayor se le otorgó, en 1762, el título de marqués de Ovieco.

Dos siglos después, el 7 de septiembre de 1955, en Cartagena de Indias fue erigida una estatua donada por el gobierno español en homenaje a Blas de Lezo.

oly Week, the Christian celebration, has its peculiarities depending on different cultural expressions. It is the case of Timbio, a town in Cauca department, in western Colombia.

The processions in this time of year have been a tradition for more than 170 years. The statues used in them came from Spain in 1640 and are a part of its historical and cultural patrimony. 25 steps or scenes are closely followed by the attendees. This Colombian municipality completely changes during this time and the night is lit up with paschal candles.

Timbio has around 35,000 inhabitants, and during Holy Week it welcomes more than 1,000 tourists who come to join the religious ceremonies, where indigenous peoples, afro and mestizo communities participate. z

a celebración cristiana de la Semana Santa tiene sus particularidades dependiendo de las diferentes expresiones culturales. Es el caso de lo que ocurre en el Timbío, un pueblo del departamento del Cauca, en el occidente colombiano.

Las procesiones que se realizan en esta época del año conservan una tradición de 170 años. Además, muestra el patrimonio histórico y religioso que imágenes que llegaron de España en 1640. Son 25 pasos o escenas que recorren paso a paso los asistentes y que le cambia el rostro a este municipio colombiano. La noche se alumbra con cirios.

Timbío tiene unos 35.000 habitantes y para Semana Santa acoge a más de mil turistas que llegan a compartir los ritos religiosos, en donde participan pueblos indígenas, comunidades afro y mestizos. z

One of the programs to come out of that situation was Recharge and Recover PHL. Over 160 leaders in the civic and business sectors came together with solutions to the issues being faced because of the pandemic.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTORSHIP FOR WOMEN

Gender identity is often an integral part of many women’s leadership journeys.

When asked about that concept, Hopkins responded, “We bring our identities to our jobs. And we aren’t often in control

of how others perceive us.”

For most leaders, mentorship is extremely beneficial. Hopkins noted how during her early career, she often searched for mentors, but struggled to find any.

However, she added that she has gotten a lot of support from other women over the years. As a result, Hopkins has taken it upon herself to be the mentor she really needed when she was starting out. She creates time for people, especially Black women to talk and get mentorship.

Coles ended the chat by addressing how the Women of Merit honorees have helped other women succeed through things like mentorship and recommendations.

“That’s the power of who we are as women. That is the power of true leadership and it doesn’t require a title,” she stated. z

But the administration and its allies argue that terminating the rule will simply return the system to pre-pandemic protocol, and that migrants will continue to be removed unless they establish “a legal basis to remain” in the U.S. Republicans insist that the administration’s move to request billions of dollars to fight COVID-19 while ending Title 42 is “hypocritical.” Title 42 gives the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the authority to limit migrant crossings at the

While the CDC issued Title 42 at the start of the pandemic in 2020 to mitigate the spread of the disease, critics say it has been in place for too long and is now being used to neglect legitimate asylum claims.

New Mexico Sen. Ben Ray Luján, who is part of the group of lawmakers advocating for a Title 42 termination, said he fully supports the administration’s move.

“We need Covid funding in America.

We should be working together on this.

There’s agreement... Now’s the time for us to work together to get it done,” Luján said.z

everal days ago, a video of an Argentinian soccer player became a trending topic in social media, who, after a game, surprised a journalist from a sports channel as he answered “I don’t remember” to three very obvious questions about what happened during the match. It seemed like an unkind reaction at first.

An hour later, after raising all kinds of reactions, most of them against the athlete, the reason for those answers was known. It was all part of a campaign by the Association Against Alzheimer’s (ALMA) and Racing soccer team. “Shortterm memory loss is one of the first and most common symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Early detection of this disease helps with better treatments and a better quality of life,” said soccer player Leonardo Sigali, the protagonist of the story.

Alzheimer’s is the most common dementia-related disease, almost 70% of the cases, according the World Health Organization. It is estimated that 35 million people suffer from it. By 2050, these numbers could affect more than 100 million people. The impact on families and the patient is horrifying.

In this moment, there are research groups around the world trying to search out the causes and possible cures. One of them is in University of Antioquia, in Medellin (Colombia).

Leading the group is Dr. Francisco Lopera, a clinical neurologist, who has done research on the disease for 40 years, and is a pioneer in the world.

ENGLISH Lopera has done research on genetic Alzheimer, the type that a patient will inevitably develop, and which is not determined by age. The Colombian scientist claims that it corresponds to 1% of the cases, and Colombia has the first place in this disease, of which 13 mutations have been discovered. The other type of Alzheimer’s is sporadic, predominant and other factors contribute with it.

These days the news is that Lopera and the Neuroscience Group of Antioquia, as part of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative (API Colombia), concluded the initial tests of a drug that could prevent or delay the appearance of Alzheimer’s in one of its Colombian versions, and they are hoping to get the results for the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference to take place in San Diego (California) on July 31.

This process started in 2013 with almost 300 healthy volunteers from families with genetic Alzheimer´s originating 300 years back. The research has been supported by organizations such as Genentech lab, the National Institutes of Health and the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute in Arizona.

It may not be front-page news on war, COVID-19, political feuds and poverty, but ALMA foundation’s message in Argentina is a touching one, and the results obtained by Dr. Francisco Lopera are leaving a lot of hope. Let us not forget.z

ace unos días fue tendencia en redes sociales el video de un futbolista argentino que, después de un partido, sorprendió a un periodista de un canal deportivo al responderle “No me acuerdo” a tres preguntas obvias sobre lo que acababa de suceder en el juego. A primera vista fue una reacción antipática.

A la hora, después de todo tipo de reacciones, la mayoría contra el deportista, se supo la razón de las respuestas. Era parte de una campaña de la Asociación de Lucha contra el Mal de Alzhéimer (ALMA) y el equipo de fútbol Racing. “La falla en la memoria a corto plazo es uno de los primeros y más comunes síntomas del Alzhéimer, ya que la detección temprana de esta enfermedad ayuda a tener un mejor tratamiento y mejor calidad de vida”, dijo en un video el futbolista Leonardo Sigali, el protagonista.

El Alzhéimer es la enfermedad de demencia más común, casi el 70%, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Se calcula que 35 millones de personas en el mundo la padecen. Para el 2050 esa cifra puede llegar a afectar a algo más de 100 millones. El impacto sobre las familias y el entorno del enfermo es aterrador.

A estas alturas hay en el mundo grupos de investigadores tratando de escudriñar las causas y las posibles curas. Uno de ellos funciona en la Universidad de Antioquia, en Medellín (Colombia). Allí el abanderado es el doctor Francisco Lopera, neurólogo clínico que lleva 40 años investigando la enfermedad y es pionero en el mundo.

Lopera ha trabajado en la investigación del Alzhéimer genético, aquel que implica que a la persona le dará inevitablemente la enfermedad y no está determinada por la edad. El científico colombiano asegura que corresponde al 1 por ciento de los casos y que Colombia es primero en el mundo en esa enfermedad, de la que ha descubierto 13 mutaciones. El otro tipo de Alzhéimer es el esporádico, al que se suman otros factores y que es el predominante.

Por estos días la noticia es que Lopera y su Grupo de Neurociencias de Antioquia, como parte de la Alzhéimer Prevention Initiative (API Colombia), terminaron las pruebas iniciales de un medicamento que podría prevenir o aplazar la aparición del Alzhéimer en una de las versiones colombianas y esperan tener resultados para el Congreso Mundial de Alzhéimer, que se realizará en San Diego (California) el próximo 31 de julio.

Este proceso se inició en el 2013 con casi 300 voluntarios sanos de familias con alzhéimer genético con un origen 300 años atrás. La investigación ha tenido el apoyo de organizaciones como el laboratorio Genentech, el Instituto Nacional de Salud de los Estados Unidos y el Instituto Banner de Arizona.

Tal vez no es una noticia de primera página por la guerra, la COVID-19, las disputas políticas y la pobreza, pero sí conmueve el mensaje de la fundación ALMA de Argentina y hay mucha esperanza por los resultados del doctor Francisco Lopera. No nos olvidemos.z
