hiladelphia’s population has grown more in the last 10 years than in any decade since 1950. But the faces of those who live in the city have also changed. This is the central theme of this edition. The cover article states that according to a recent report, in 2021, the population was composed of 40% African-Americans, 34% whites, 15% Latinos, and 8% Asians. But in working life, things do not change significantly and are not consistent with the demographic makeup of Philadelphia: 51% for African-Americans, 20% for whites, 6.5% for Latinos, and 7% for Asians. In leadership positions, 56% are occupied by whites, 38% by African-Americans, and about 7% by Latinos. By gender, women outnumber men with 51% of posts. The data is part of the fifth Philadelphia Workforce Diversity Profile, an initiative promoted since 2016 by Mayor Jim Kenney and developed by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. It is also a product of the commitment to reflect the city’s population reality. Over the years, research has shown the benefits of a diverse and inclusive workplace like increased revenue growth, more stability, and greater innovation. Philadelphia implemented a strategy last year to ensure racial equity: a representative from the city’s Diversity and Inclusion Office will meet quarterly with department heads to review progress. “Diversity is looking at who is in the room in terms of differences… inclusion is looking at organizational culture and feeling like they belong… and when you talk about equity, you are really talking about resources and outcomes, and policies and practices,” Nefertiri Sickout, the City’s chief of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, recently told AL DÍA.

In Culture, this edition features the story of Colombian musician Edmar Castañeda, who introduced jazz to the harp, an instrument that plays a leading role in genres such as the traditional music of the plains in Colombia and Venezuela. Castañeda, 44, came to the United States at 16. He began playing the trumpet at school, but later learned and perfected his harp. His most recent release is Family, an album he released in 2021, and recently performed masterfully at the Lincoln Center. z

he National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals recently installed its new top leaders. During the 2022 National Convention and Housing Policy Summit in March, Luis Padilla was named NAHREP’s new President, while Nuria Rivera was named NAHREP’s President-elect.

A native of Cuba, Luis Padilla and his family emigrated to Miami in 1973. His career in the real estate industry has spanned over 33 years. After earning his bachelor’s degree in finance with a minor in business at St. Thomas University, he began his professional career spanning various sectors, including commercial and residential lending, REO listing and numerous real estate businesses and traditional real estate sales. Padilla is the CEO of The Padilla Team at RE/MAX Advance Realty, and has served on the NAHREP National Board of Directors. He also sits on the NAHREP 10 Certified Trainer approval committee, and was the 2015 President of NAHREP South Florida. Under his leadership, NAHREP South Florida won the national Chapter of the Year Award, adding to other accolades he’s won, which includes the 100% Club, the 2019 RE/MAX Chairman’s Club Award, and being ranked in the annual NAHREP Top 250 Latino Agents Award for seven consecutive years. “Luis is the embodiment of the NAHREP 10 Principles,” said Gary Acosta, NAHREP co-founder & CEO, in a statement. “He leads by example and has a profound impact on the lives of our members and the people they influence.” Padilla’s current role sees him focused and dedicated to helping first-time home buyers. Nuria Rivera came to the United States at the age of 11, and has seen her career progress through self-development and growth. All of it is fulfilled through her purpose of teaching and helping others to create the life they desire. She is the CEO of Novation Title Insurance Agency, and has also served on the NAHREP National Board of Directors. Her company has received Utah’s “Best of State” five years in a row since 2016. In addition,

ANTI-LGBTQ+ USA

A NATIONAL WAVE OF ANTI_LGBTQ+ BILLS IS SWEEPING ACROSS THE COUNTRY. HERE’S HOW IT’S UNFOLDING.

UNA OLA NACIONAL DE PROYECTOS DE LEY ANTI_LGBTQ+ ESTÁ RECORRIENDO TODO EL PAÍS. AQUÍ LES CONTAMOS DE QUÉ MANERA SE ESTÁ MANIFESTANDO. By | Por: BRITTANY VALENTINE | AL DÍA News Staff Writer

Besides PA, 37 other states have introduced antiLGBTQ+ bills. Pennsylvania may be able to avoid passing an anti-LGBTQ+ bill, but Alabama already has more than one.

ack on April 12, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives joined the growing chorus across the country fighting the nonissue of trans athletes in women’s sports. Led by Republicans it passed the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, which requires all sports teams run out of all public and some private institutions to designate them male, female or coed. Teams designated female also “may not be open to students of the male sex,” reads the bill’s language. “Allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports reverses nearly 50 years of hard-earned advances for women and destroys fair competition

ENGLISH and women’s athletic opportunities,” said Rep. Barbara Gleim, a Republican from Cumberland County who sponsored the bill.

AN INCOMING VETO

The legislation will now head to Pennsylvania’s Senate, where it will likely also be passed and sent to Governor Tom Wolf’s desk. There, Wolf has already come out and said he’d veto. “As states across the country push transphobic legislation, some Republicans in the General Assembly are wasting time attempting the same in Pennsylvania. It won’t get past my desk,” Wolf wrote on Twitter not long after the bill passed.

APRIL 27 - MAY 4, 2022

POLÍTICA ENGLISH The ACLU also slammed Pennsylvania for focusing on the issue of trans women in sports rather than the chronic underfunding of women’s sports, which is seen nationwide. Besides PA, 37 other states have introduced anti-LGBTQ+ bills that try to do everything from banning trans athletes to hindering LGBTQ+ discourse in public schools. But where Pennsylvania has a governor that will veto the bill and other anti-LGBTQ+ legislation like it, other states have already passed such measures.

ANTI-LGBTQ+ BILLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

The most high-profile of late have been Alabama, Florida and Texas.

Alabama has passed a slew dating back to last year, when it confirmed its own version of a participation ban for trans women athletes in women’s sports. More recently, it has stepped up violent measures. One new piece of legislation would ban transgender students from using sex segregated facilities, like bathrooms and locker rooms, that align with the gender identities. The other ventures into the criminal sphere, and makes it a felony for parents or medical professionals to provide gender-affirming care for trans children under 18 years old. In Florida, the talk sweeping the state is actually about not speaking on LGBTQ+ topics in schools. The Don’t Say Gay bill, which is now law in Florida, prohibits classroom discussions about sexual orientation or gender identity.

Amid new evidence and a potential coerced confession, the court ruled Lucio’s case to go back to trial for consideration. Lucio became first Latina in Texas to be sentenced to death, and was scheduled for execution on April 27 for the murder of her two-year-old child. Despite initially confessing to the crime after hours of questioning, the 53-year-old mother has maintained her innocence.

WHAT HAPPENED IN 2007?

In 2007, Lucio’s family called 911 after finding two-year-old Mariah unresponsive in her bedroom. The toddler had stopped breathing and her body was covered with bruises and what police believed was a bite mark. The signs of child abuse led police to believe that Mariah was severely beaten and her death was ruled a homicide. Because her mother was thought to be the one home the most, Lucio became the main suspect in the case. The night her daughter died, Lu-

At first, the toddler seemed to be okay, but over time she became sluggish and refused to eat. Under police interrogation, Lucio forcefully and repeatedly denied all implications of her abusing her daughter. After about three hours, Lucio started to break down and started agreeing with Texas Ranger Victor Escalon, who leaned into her closely and spoke in a soft, reassuring voice, which was seen in interrogation footage. Eventually, Lucio said “what do you want me to say? I’m responsible for it.” Lucio’s case was founded entirely on a vague confession. Furthermore, the judge at Lucio’s trial declined to hear expert testimony that could have shed light on why she would admit to police things that she didn’t do. Lucio’s case has now become an international movement, and a growing lineup of former jurors, foreign ambassadors, celebrities, and more than half of the Texas House of Representatives, has urged the state parole board to take Lucio off death row. Mental health evaluations show that Lucio suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to years of domestic violence, and five of the 12 jurors who sentenced her to death have expressed doubt over her guilt.

In just the decade between 2010 and 2020, the city saw a roughly 77,800 population increase, which brought the city’s population to more than 1.6 million, according to the 2020 U.S. Census. It marked a 5.1% increase, which was the largest 10-year population increase since 1950, when Philadelphia saw a 7.3% increase from the previous decade. The most recent Census data reported Philadelhpia racial demographic breakdown as 42% Black, 41% white, 15% Latino, and 7% Asian. While those numbers tell one story, the racial demographics of the city’s workforce tells another.

A FIRST IN PHILLY HISTORY

Until relatively recently, the City had never released a detailed report noting the racial and gender makeup of its municipal workforce. When Mayor Jim Kenney was sworn in as the city’s new mayor in 2016, he highlighted a commitment to creating a more diverse and representative government in

In order to take his promise to the next level, he appointed Nolan Atkinson, Jr. as the city’s first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer. Kenney later announced the creation of the Philadelphia Workforce Profile Report, an annual report produced by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion that provides the numbers that highlight how diverse Philadelphia’s population, workforce, and exempt workforce are. The exempt workforce refers to employees who are not part of the civil service system. In reaction to the release of the now annual report, Atkinson Jr. said at the time that “presenting factual data of the City of Philadelphia’s workforce is an essential step to bettering the diversity of the City workforce.” This fell in line with Atkinson’s approach throughout the entirety of his tenure in the role, before his retire-

APRIL 27 - MAY 4, 2022

ENGLISH ment in 2020. Some of the key findings in the first Workforce Profile Report included: the city’s government workforce is predominantly male at 62%, despite women making up 53% of Philly’s population. While only 38% of the city’s workforce was female in 2016, 57% of the city’s department heads were women. Racially, the white and Black populations, respectively, were overrepresented in the city’s workforce, while the city’s Latino and Asian workers were underrepresented. In 2016, the white population and Black population made up 35% and 44% of Philly’s population, respectively, while they made up 40% and 50% of the city’s workforce, respectively. Meanwhile, the city’s Latino and Asian population were at 14% and 7%, respectively, while making up just 6% and 3% of the workforce, respectively. The median annual salary in 2016 was $54,311, while the average salary was $56,646. For whites in the exempt workforce, the average salary was about $77,516; for Blacks, it was $67,096; for Latinos, it was $61,638; and for Asians, it was $67,512. Females outnumbered males as workforce exempt employees 55% to 45%, while the racial demographics were 45% white, 40% Black, 8% Latino, and 5% Asian.

THE TREND FIVE YEARS LATER

In 2021, the City released its fifth annual Philadelphia Workforce Diversity Profile. After five years, the city’s population and workforce demographics have seen slight, modest shifts. According to the most recent diversity profile in 2021, Philly’s population was 40% Black, 34% white, 15% Latino, and 8% Asian — in the five years since the first diversity profile was released, the white and Black communities has seen decreases in the city’s overall population, while the Latino and Asian communities saw slight increases. Across the total municipal workforce, the racial breakdown in 2021 was about 48% Black, 39% white, 7% Latino, and 4% Asian. The numbers continue to show that the city’s Black and white populations are still overrepresented in the workforce, while the Latino and Asian communities are still underrepresented. However, the 2021 workforce diversity profile also looks at the percentage of hires by race & ethnicity, reporting about 51% Black, 20% white, 6.5% Latino, and 7% Asian. There are some shifts that have occurred in the exempt workforce over the past five years, as well. The shifts are as follows: White (50% in 2016 to 45% in 2021); Black (37%

in 2016 to 36% in 2021); Latino (6% in 2016 to 8% in 2021); Asian (5% in 2016 to 7% in 2021). Among senior leadership positions — defined as department heads, commissioners, deputy managing directors and cabinet members — 56% are white, 38% are Black, and about 7% are Latino, while women slightly outnumber men 51% to 49%. In an effort to ensure equity is a priority across the city, last year the City implemented a new Racial Equity Strategy, which requires all City departments to create an official Racial Equity Action Plan. As part of the plan, each department must identify strategies to produce a greater racially equitable impact that is relevant to each agency’s mission. Using the data collected from the report, a representative of the office of Diversity and Inclusion will conduct quarterly meetings with commissioners and department heads to review their respective progress, as it pertains to diversity and inclusion.

WHY DE&I?

In recent years, many companies and organizations have taken a more direct approach toward diversity, equity, and inclusion. However, oftentimes the question that must be asked and addressed foremost is, what is the difference between diversity, equity and inclusion? During a 2021 interview with AL DÍA, Nefertiri Sickout, chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer at the City of Philadelphia, gave a detailed response to this question.“Diversity is looking at who is in the room in terms of differences… inclusion is looking at organizational culture and feeling like they belong… and when you talk about equity, you’re really talking about resources and outcomes, and policies and practices,” she said. The city is looking to do its part in promoting further diversity, equity and inclusion across city departments. Research has shown many benefits of a diverse and inclusive workplace. Some of those benefits include higher revenue growth, more innovative business ideas, an increased ability to recruit a diverse talent, and higher

overall employee retention. When it comes to the future outlook and bottom line of businesses of all kinds and sizes, diversity, equity and inclusion are proven to have a largely positive impact. Therefore, if companies and organizations are serious about succeeding long-term and coming up with innovative business solutions, building a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace environment is one of the biggest steps to take.

AN AL DÍA TRADITION

One of AL DÍA’s signature annual events is the AL DÍA Diverse City Career Fair. With 2022 marking the 19th edition of this event, the mission has always remained the same — to help various prominent local companies and organizations meet with diverse job seekers for new job and career opportunities. All of this is done with an eye towards diversifying the city’s workforce to the degree that more closely mirrors Philadelphia’s overall population. In 2019, AL DÍA officially revamped the career fair’s name to its current iteration, qualifying the said mission. “The city of Philadelphia is diverse, but employment of those diverse residents of the city has yet to happen at the scale that it needs to happen,” Hernan Guaracao, AL DÍA founder and CEO, said at the time about the name revamp. The featured employees at this year’s AL DÍA Diverse City Career Fair will also be diverse in the companies and industries looking to hire. This includes local nonprofit organizations like JEVS Human Resources, Action Wellness, and Children’s Crisis Treatment Center; to higher education institutions like the Community College of Philadelphia, Villanova Nursing, and Penn; to large corporations like PECO and Independence Blue Cross; and many more. The 2022 AL DÍA Diverse City Career Fair is scheduled for Thursday, March 28 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. z

CYNTHIA FIGUEROA

CEO OF JEVS IN HER ROLE, SHE CONTINUES A CAREER-LONG MISSION OF MAKING EQUITY AND ACCESS AVAILABLE TO ALL. EN SU CARGO, CONTINÚA CON LA MISIÓN DE SU CARRERA DE HACER QUE LA EQUIDAD Y EL ACCESO ESTÉN AL ALCANCE DE TODOS. By | Por: JENSEN TOUSSAINT | AL DÍA News Staff Writer

ynthia Figueroa was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico to a Honduran mother and Cuban-American father who met in Puerto Rico, both as members of the Peace Corps. “So, the issue of social justice has been a critical part of my personal and professional career pathways and it’s an important part of my identity,” said Figueroa in an interview with AL DÍA. Like so many others, Figueroa’s parents made the journey to the U.S. when she was five for more opportunities and a chance at a better life. Moving to the mainland presented an indelible experience for her personally. “I probably wouldn’t have been raised bilingual, I don’t know if I would have gone to college, I don’t know what the trajectory would have been,” she reflected. “But certainly, that opportunity changed the pathway for my sisters and I.”

INCREASING EQUITY AND ACCESS

Since moving to Philadelphia about 25 years ago, Figueroa has been actively involved in a number of prominent organizations. From roles as director and CEO of Congreso to more recently, Deputy Mayor at the Office of Children and Families, Figueroa’s approach has been the same.

20 •

ENGLISH In her own words, “It’s making sure that equity and access is available to all people,” she said. When she thinks about the opportunities she, her sisters and parents have had in this country, she wants to afford those opportunities to others, as well. She strives to be an advocate and change agent for underserved, marginalized and vulnerable groups. “I have always worked really hard to stand on the side of right,” she said. “Sometimes standing on the side of right can be very lonely, it can be very painful. But at the same time, it can be incredibly fulfilling.”

LATEST JOURNEY AT JEVS

In February 2022, Figueroa officially became the new CEO of JEVS Human Resources, noting the organization’s range of services, history and values as what attracted her most to the position. “The origins of JEVS… it was about immigrants assimilating into a new society and helping them make sure that they had the tools,” said Figueroa. “That’s my story in a different way.” “Those origins and the commitment… of accepting and receiving all, supporting and service, bringing individuals to their full potential, I was very attracted to that,” she added. In this new role, Figueroa hopes to simply continue to grow the vision of the organization. z

f the many gifts Antonio Valdés’ parents have given him throughout his life, two stand out the most. “I’ve often said about my parents that after their greatest gift, which was love and consistency and support… the next really great thing they did was give me that cultural experience from an identity perspective,” said Valdés in an interview with AL DIA. Born and raised throughout North Jersey, Delaware and Connecticut, Valdés is the child of a Cuban father and Dominican mother. As a teenager, he lived in the Dominican Republic, which had a huge impact on his life. “The fact that I got to live in the Dominican Republic as a teen, didn’t speak English for years, had that very rich experience of being completely inculturated into Dominican culture,” said Valdés. “And then as a result the concept of being bicultural was able to sort of blossom within me.” Being accustomed to both the lifestyles and customs in both the Dominican Republic and Cuba, as well as the United States has been a very important part of his life. “A lot of my life has been connected to supporting the Latino community,” said Valdés.

THE HELPING FIELD

As Valdés navigated his undergraduate career at the University of Delaware, he went through a number of different majors. Eventually, he settled on biology and

ENGLISH anthropology, with a minor in political science. When he was ready to enter the workforce, one thing was crystal clear. “I always knew that I was going to be in the helping field in some way or another,” he said. “When I got out of school, I went right into working in the mental health world and helping elderly, mentally ill folks move from psychiatric hospitals to community placements,” Valdés continued.

LEADING CHILDREN’S CRISIS TREATMENT CENTER

After social worker, director of operations, and executive director roles at other behavioral health service organizations, in 1997, Valdés was named to his current role as executive director of Children’s Crisis Treatment Center (CCTC). In his nearly quarter-century tenure leading CCTC, the organization has grown exponentially in its number of employees and clients. When asked about the most fulfilling part of his work, providing behavioral health services to children and families in Philadelphia, he said it’s the feedback he receives. “We’re impacting how these families see themselves and how they work going forward to help other kids, and then you can imagine the trickle down effect,” he said. “That feels very powerful… very important.” z

lthough Colombian music usually highlights stars such as Shakira or Maluma, some artists stand out in other genres. This is the case for Edmar Castañeda, who, despite dedicating himself to a musical style far from the mainstream, his popularity is soaring, especially in New York, his city of residence. Since moving to the Big Apple, this Colombian musician, with his wide smile and mastery of the harp, has been developing his own musical style that combines jazz and Latin, as well as traditional sounds from his homeland. He recently showed off his talent at New York’s Lincoln Center, where he performed his latest album Family, with his quartet. His wife, singer Andrea Tierra, performs two songs from the album.

A SPECIAL RETURN

Before the concert, he predicted it would be a special date, as he had not seen his bandmates since before the pandemic. Before the coronavirus, he was a regular collaborator with Winton Marsalis, the Jazz Lincoln Center Orchestra and Paquito de Rivera, who called Castañeda “one of the most original musicians in the Big Apple.” After his successful international tours, Castañeda has perfected the sounds of his Colombian harp. His wife, Tierra, celebrated his return after a two-year pause: “We are finally playing the new album after all we have been through these two years, and here in New York, the city we love and which has so much power in our hearts.” The performance also featured Israeli saxophonist Shlomi Cohen and Colombian drummer Rodrigo Villalón. Together, they performed an exquisite blend of jazz, funk, and Latin American folk music. At 44, Castañeda has an extensive discography. He previously released albums such as Cuarto de colores, Entre cuerdas, Double Portion and Harp vs. Harp. His latest production, Family, was inspired by his family, which brought him strength and unity during the dark pandemic times.

“This music is inspired by what my family was like and our strength to get through this ordeal [coronavirus]. This music is inspired by that and many of my absences during my trips to Europe. That pain that every musician feels when it is away from home,” he said during an interview with the Associated Press. His latest album also includes “Canción con todos,” a classic of the Latin American music by Argentina’s Armando Tejada Gómez and César Isella, popularized in the 1970s by Mercedes Sosa. “It’s a song that unites all of Latin America, and it also gave us a sense of family unity,” said the musician. When Castañeda immigrated to the U.S. at 16, he initially played trumpet in his school’s marching band. He then transferred his skills to the harp. Over time, he developed a harp/bass hybrid that allows him to play both instruments in one. He uses his left hand like a bass player and his right hand like a guitarist. “It’s a technique I developed during my years in New York,” he explained, pointing to the instrument specially designed by French manufacturer CAMAC. z APRIL 27 - MAY 4, 2022

THE ONLY STANDING WONDER OF THE WORLD THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA, IN EGYPT, ARE A MIRACLE OF HUMANITY AND A MYSTERY FOR THEIR CONSTRUCTION. gypt is a country where the history of humanity overwhelms at every step. So you walk around feeling the gaze of thousands of ancestors on your back. If there is a place where this sensation is accentuated, and one feels tiny concerning history, it is in front of the pyramids of Giza. The oldest and only one of the seven wonders of the world still standing is the pyramid of Cheops. The miracle is such that it is still unknown how it was built since its stone blocks weigh at least two tons each. It was built during the Cheops’ reign in the first half of the 26th century B.C., more than 4,000 years ago! Cheops forms a trio with the pyramids of Chephren and Mykerinos; they constitute the necropolis on Cairo’s outskirts. They are so close to the Egyptian capital that they are distinguishable among its cluttered skyline on clear days, rarely because pollution overwhelms this metropolis.

HOW WERE THE PYRAMIDS BUILT?

The Great Pyramid was erected at the height of the pharaohs’ Ancient Empire and demonstrates both their ability to organize workers and the knowledge they achieved. Pulleys had not yet been invented, and placing the steps that brought the construction up to 146.50 meters high must not have been an easy task. There are several theories about the construction, but none has been fully proven. The first one, elaborated by Herodotus, the Greek historian, in 450 B.C., took into account the testimony of the Egyptian priests. According to him, it took 20 years, and the carved stones were climbed by short timbers steps raised from level to level. A second hypothesis is related to the German Egyptologist Ludwig Borchardt, who in 1928 spoke of perpendicular ramps that helped carry the tons of stone to their destination. Years later, another architect found supposed marks of these ramps, but other historians continue believing that the pyramid itself was used as a platform for further construction.

ENGLISH Another theory more ‘pilgrim’ is featured by Ben Carson, the neurosurgeon turned presidential candidate for the Republican Party in 2015. He believed that instead of tombs, the pyramids were granaries built by Joseph. No one in the party refuted him scaring to chase away Trump evangelical voters.

DIVERSITY hiring made SIMPLE

Jobs

Another sign of Ancient Egypt’s legacy is its influence on our language. Even today, we still use the expression “pharaonic work” to describe constructions that stand out from the others because of their majesty. By the way, the Cheops pyramid is formed by 2.3 million stone blocks, and some of them weigh up to 60 tons. When the pyramid was completed, it was covered with 27,000 blocks of white limestone to reflect the sunlight. The pharaohs glittered on their way to the afterlife and dazzled followers and enemies, but not thieves. There were thefts of the treasures kings were buried with, then decided to stop building pyramids, as they were too conspicuous, and preferred to excavate their tombs in the south of Egypt, in the Kings Valley, in Luxor. Nowadays, the pyramid can be visited; however, it is not recommended for people with back problems or claustrophobia. You must walk, almost squatting, down a narrow hall to reach the burial chamber. Inside there is a lot of humidity, and the heat concentrated from the people visiting the wonder. If you overcome all these barriers, the encounter with history is certainly worth the journey. z

he Rio de Janeiro Carnival returned to the streets after two years of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It took off on April 20 and had its first big event on April 23 with the usual colorful and multitudinous staging at the monumental open-air Sambódromo, with the show presented by the samba schools and watched by around 70 thousand people from the grandstands set up on both sides. The carnival also served to help improve the conditions of the tourist sector, seriously affected by the restrictions imposed because of this pandemic, which left more than 650,000 dead in Brazil, the largest and most populated country in Latin America. During these two years, Sambódromo was the epicenter of vaccination and refuge for half a thousand homeless people. Hotel occupancy reached 80 percent and it is estimated that the expected 2 million tourists did not arrive, a figure similar to 2020 recorded. The Rio Carnival ends on April 30. z

THIS IS ACCORDING TO A RECENT WSFS BANK STUDY, HOWEVER SOME OBSTACLES LIKE INFLATION REMAIN A CONCERN. ASÍ LO SEÑALA UN RECIENTE ESTUDIO DEL BANCO WSFS; SIN EMBARGO, ALGUNOS OBSTÁCULOS COMO LA INFLACIÓN SIGUEN SIENDO PREOCUPANTES. By | Por: JENSEN TOUSSAINT | AL DÍA News Staff Writer

new WSFS Bank survey has reported that 72% of Americans feel confident they will achieve their financial goals. However, with increased inflation on goods and services, about 39% said they’re not confident in their ability to keep pace, while 24% said having poor credit prevents them from using financial products and services. “The impacts of inflation are being felt by many consumers,” said Vernita Dorsey, senior vice president and director of community strategy at WSFS Bank. She added that inflation can hamper various goals, including building savings and emergency funds and purchasing a home. The report found that 49% of respondents noted the need to build emergency funds for themselves and their families as a goal, compared to 54% regionally. Dorsey noted that saving is among one of the key ways to protect yourself from the changing economic and social economic influences. For Hispanic respondents, 36% cited buying/affording a home or apartment as a goal, more than total respondents (26%), with 68% of Hispanic respondents saying they are confident they will achieve it. Another important way to achieve your financial goals is to know what resources are available.

ENGLISH According to the survey, 83% of respondents nationwide feel financial products from traditional financial institutions are accessible to them, however, obstacles remain. “It is vital to provide resources and support for consumers with diverse needs and backgrounds to help members of all communities achieve financial success,” said Dr. Michelle Burroughs, senior vice president & chief diversity officer at WSFS Bank. “While there are abundant resources available for all learning styles, it is important for banks and financial service providers to meet consumers where they are to provide support and ensure they have access to the tools needed.” About 32% of respondents cited high costs and fees, while 24% said having poor credit is the reason they may not be using financial products and services from traditional financial institutions. “Building and maintaining a strong credit score, generally one above 700, can be key to achieving your financial goals, as it can impact the rate offerings for your mortgage, loans and more,” said Dorsey. “If you find your score still needs work, start by paying down loans and credit with the highest interest rates and try to get your debt-to-credit ratio below 30% to avoid negatively impacting your score.”

bordo SEPTA is a new partnership between AL DÍA and SEPTA, which will talk to Philly residents about the role SEPTA plays in their everyday lives. Whether it be a daily commute, going to see family, discovering a new part of the city or something else, public transportation like SEPTA plays a vital role in what takes a place like Philadelphia from being a city of neighborhoods, to one as a whole cohesive community. Abordo SEPTA, set to be released in the coming months, will be written, but also incorporate multimedia aspects to bolster the storytelling, and a community arts film project directed by Alba Martinez, whose story is an inspiration for the series. Martinez first came to Philadelphia from law school in Washington D.C. in 1985. She came to be a part of Community Legal Services, still one of the best public interest law firms in the country. The other, more important reason she

ENGLISH came to Philadelphia was for the Latino community she heard so much about and wanted to connect with. When she got here, the community was initially hidden, but a call Martinez placed to Taller Puertorriqueño, after finding it in a phone book, put her on SEPTA Route 47 north from Center City to 5th and Lehigh. When she got off, Martinez was at the center of the Latino community in North Philadelphia, full of its vibrant colors, music, and commerce. More than 30 years later, Martinez would write a song as a salsa ode to Route 47 and the ride she went on to discover a new world within Philadelphia. The song, “La Guagua 47,” is the first story in AL DÍA’s Abordo SEPTA series, and it will also get a community film project at the culmination of the series towards the end of the year in partnership with Martinez’s Ritmo Lab. bordo SEPTA es una nueva colaboración entre AL DÍA y SEPTA, que hablará con los residentes de Filadelfia sobre el papel que desempeña SEPTA en su vida cotidiana.

Each year, NAHREP publishes the annual State of Hispanic Homeownership Report, which analyzes how the U.S. Hispanic population fares with respect to homeownership attainment in America. While peaking in 2015 at 68%, new Latino homeowners decreased to just 18% in 2021. It creates the decrease to the housing inventory being at its lowest rates in history. However, given the relative youth of the Latino population and expected population growth, those numbers are likely to climb up again. According to NAHREP, homeownership is “the symbol of the American Dream, the cornerstone of wealth creation and a stabilizing force for working families.” z

He also encouraged medical professionals across the state to report if transgender youth were receiving gender-affirming care. The ACLU has since sued over the issue. In Pennsylvania, the move to try and ban transgender athletes from sports

comes after University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas became the first trans athlete to win a Division I title in the 500-meter freestyle at the 2022 NCAA Swimming Championships. Thomas excelled and is a phenomenal athlete in the pool, but those criticizing her ‘advantage’ failed to also realize that she also didn’t break any women’s swimming NCAA records, finishing more than nine seconds behind Olympic gold-medalist Katie Ledecky’s NCAA-record time in the 500. She also didn’t win any of the other events she took part in at the championships.z

he University of Michigan recently released some disturbing statistics. It shows that the first cause of death among children and teenagers in the United States is related to firearms. In 2020, 4,300 young people under 19 were killed by firearm-related injuries. It is the first time that guns occupied that place, surpassing car crashes. In its conclusions, the University reviewed information published two weeks ago by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among 45,222 Americans who died under these conditions, 4,300 were young people, between homicides and suicides. Homicides increased 33.4% compared to 2019. For suicides, the rise was 1.1%. This macabre ranking is followed by traffic accidents, with 3,900 deaths, and drug overdoses, with 1,700. Gun-related deaths are not out of the ordinary, but they are a concern in a country where the Constitution guarantees the carrying of firearms, and around 400 million guns are in circulation. Although there are many cases of massacres or individual actors, the possibility of restrictions remains unchanged, with the firm and powerful opposition of the National Rifle Association (NRA). The other recent worrying fact is related to youth employment. A survey conducted by Intellugent.com and referred by bloomberglinea. com warns that 25% of young university graduates over 25 are not working in fields related to what they studied. The same proportion earns less than $30,000 per year. According to the survey, conducted among 1,000 young people, in terms of salaries, there is a deep inequality depending on what they study in college. For example, careers related to engineering, business, and information technology earn up to $90,000 per year. That was gathered from 40% of the people surveyed, who studied in these fields. In contrast, more than 40% of those who chose professions related to social sciences, education, and communications reported an annual income of around $45,000. With these figures in mind, inflation and elevated higher education costs must be considered, which in the private sector can be $38,000 per year in just tuition=. In February, a study by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center revealed that since mid-2019, undergraduate enrollment in universities fell by 6.6%. This means that more than a million young people did not enroll in college, exacerbated by the pandemic. The causes of death among young people and their conditions to study and work form the puzzle of what is happening in the United States, which must be attended to prevent major crises. z
