La resiliencia de sus ciudadanos hará que Filadelfia siga siendo el destino gastronómico de la región.

T

he word “cosmopolitan,” derived from the ancient Greek kosmopolitês, is formed from kosmos, meaning “world,” and “politês,” meaning “citizen” or “one of a city.”

Today, contemporary usage defines the term as “citizen of the world,” a concept facilitated by globalization and the vertiginousness of the digital world.

However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the concepts of community, collaboration, and society were restructured and demonstrated the fundamental need to understand that, together, we are part of a much larger whole.

From essential workers to farmers and health professionals to single mothers and teachers, we have all had to lend a hand to maintain some sense of normalcy as the worst of the storm passes.

But perhaps the most resilient have been restaurateurs — those who reinvent every day the way they feed us, support their employees, and fortify the social dynamics in cities like Philadelphia.

As of today, restaurants in the city are limited to 25% of their indoor capacity, and over the past year, the financial situation of the food hospitality industry has become nothing short of dire.

The food economy accounts for 10 percent of all jobs and 19 percent of all establishments within the city as of 2018.

Pero quizás los más resilientes han sido los restauradores – esos que reinventan cada día la manera de alimentarnos, de mantener a sus empleados, y de fortificar las dinámicas sociales en ciudades como Filadelfia.

Al día de hoy, los restaurantes en la ciudad están limitados al 25% de su capacidad interior, y durante el último año la situación financiera de la industria de la hostelería alimentaria se ha vuelto nada menos que desesperada.

Según el informe Good Eats 2019 de la Economy League, los negocios basados en la alimentación de Filadelfia son uno de los motores más importantes de la región, tanto en la actividad comercial como en la fuente de trabajos.

T

he Hispanic community in the United States contributes greatly to the nation’s economy, a fact that is generally not acknowledged or understood.

According to Forbes, Hispanics contribute over $2.6 trillion to the U.S. economy, making up a quarter of the country’s gross domestic product.

This will only increase since the group is becoming a larger fraction of the population. In 1970 there were 9.6 million Latinos in the U.S.; they account for over 61 million.

An indicator of a change in the common narrative is the number of Latinos enrolled in higher education.

In 2000, 1.4 million Latinos were in college and that figure grew to 3.27 million in 2017.

However, to effectively erase stereotypes associated with Latinos we must gain prominence in an important field where we are drastically underrepresented and that is corporate America.

Latinos increase in population and the number of college graduates are steps to attain recognition in the business and finance sectors.

Publicly-listed American companies have quadrupled the Latino representation on their boards in the first quarter of 2021, but a Latino Corporate Directors Association/KPMG report revealed that after the increase they only make up 2.7% of Fortune 1000 board seats.

That figure does not reflect the

ENGLISH fact that Latinos are a fifth of the U.S. population.

The LCDA joined with Unidos US, LULAC, the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and other organizations last September to form Latino Voices Boardroom Equity.

Together, they set a three-part plan to better the inclusion of Latinos on corporate boards. The plan calls for a tripling of Latino representation on public company boards by 2023, targeting corporations with no Latino representation and tracking their progress through the publication of a quarterly scorecard.

Their second point will be a sizable task because the LCDA also found that 73% of 2020 Fortune 1000 companies lack a single Latino director on their board.

Although this year’s increase in Latino representation is not as significant as many would have hoped, this

a comunidad hispana en Estados Unidos ha encontrado nuevas formas de contribuir a la economía del país, así como de involucrarse en temas de interés nacional a lo largo de los años.

Forbes señala que el grupo contribuye ahora con más de 2,6 billones de dólares a la economía estadounidense, lo que supone una cuarta parte del producto interior bruto del país.

Esto no hará más que aumentar, ya que el grupo se está convirtiendo en una fracción mayor de la población. En 1970 había 9,6 millones de latinos en Estados Unidos y ahora son más de 61 millones.

Un indicador del cambio en la narrativa común es el número de latinos matriculados en la educación superior. En el año 2000, 1,4 millones de latinos estaban en la universidad y esa cifra aumentó a 3,27 millones en 2017.

Sin embargo, para borrar efectivamente los estereotipos asociados a los latinos solo podemos esperar verlos ganar protagonismo en un importante campo en el que están drásticamente subrepresentados: la América corporativa.

ast week saw the end of a historic case for America, but one that will never be over for the family of George Floyd.

After deliberating for ten and a half hours, the jury in Derek Chauvin’s trial found the former officer guilty of killing Floyd and so concluded Chauvin’s trial after nearly three weeks of continuous testimony broadcast across a transfixed nation.

Chauvin was charged and found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter for his actions on May 25, 2020, when Floyd died after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground in the prone position under the knee of Chauvin for over nine minutes.

Lawyers for the prosecution and defense concluded their closing arguments on Monday, April 20. Defense attorney Eric Neilson argued Chauvin acted “responsibly,” and asserted that

ENGLISH prosecutors were acting on speculations and assumptions.

In the end, the defense lawyers’ tactic was to use closing remarks as a means of pulling jurors away from the video evidence that shook the world.

Over the course of nearly an hour, Neilson provided as many reasons as possible to test the prosecution’s testimony.

“The standard is not what ‘should’ the officer have done in these circumstances, it’s not what ‘could’ the officer have done differently in these circumstances. The standard is what were the facts that were known to this officer

The prosecution described Floyd’s final moments in detail, following the video evidence from the multiple angles captured.

Attorney Steve Schleicher told jurors to “believe your eyes,” and later listed and checked each legal element of each offense Chauvin allegedly committed as a way to guide less convinced jurors through the process of condemnation.

“He betrayed the badge and everything it stood for. It’s not how they’re trained. It’s not following the rules,” Schleicher said.

The prosecution needed every single juror to be on their side, given state rules for criminal trials. In contrast, the defense needed only one dissenting juror to avoid conviction.

Earlier on Tuesday President Joe

Biden told the press in the Oval Office that the jury reached the “right verdict” in the Chauvin trial. “I think it’s overwhelming, in my view,” he said.

Across the country, Police departments had been bracing for the outcome, with some calling in the National Guard should the verdict have gone against justice.

Last week, she and Senator Bernie Sanders rolled out the first of three bills centered on the Green New Deal’s main points: jobs, justice, and reducing carbon emissions. First, was the Green New Deal For Public Housing, a piece of legislation that would modernize the public housing system and begin a transition to renewable energy.

Their joint public housing act would repeal limitations on the construction of public housing and create grant programs to ensure improvements that will, in turn, reduce carbon emissions.

Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) joined AOC’s longtime efforts with his own Green New Deal initiative that would directly fund local governments to address lead and other hazards that Bush recalls plagued her community growing up in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Green New Deal For Cities would authorize $1 trillion in spending over the next four years to go towards environmental justice projects that align with the Green New Deal’s vision.

Conservative lawmakers on the state level have been combating climate initiatives, or, in Texas’ case, striking down already-present bills to limit renewable energy.

Copies of the memos were first obtained and reported on by The Washington Post. U.S. officials told the newspaper that these changes are effective immediately.

In one memo shared with Insider, the top CBP official, Troy Miller, said that words are significant when referring to immigrants.

“As the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, we set a tone and example for our country and partners across the world,” Miller said.

Emphasizing the importance of both enforcing the laws and maintaining the dignity of human beings, Miller also said that the language CBP, ICE, the media, and all of us use “serves to further confer that dignity to those in our custody.”

In a second memo, Tae Johnson, the acting director of ICE, promised to support Biden’s plans to humanize U.S. border policy and conserve human rights.

“In response to the vision set by the administration, ICE will ensure agency communications use the preferred terminology and inclusive language,” Johnson wrote.

The U.S. has long been criticized for human rights violations of migrants, particularly concerning the handling of unaccompanied minors.

Though the Biden administration has pledged to change the deplorable history and current conditions of this unjust system, actual change has yet to occur.

or Jorge Mosquera, the journey to becoming the owner of one of the most popular Latin American restaurants in Philadelphia was not something he foresaw.

“I always say that opening a restaurant was something that I never planned. It was something that happened by accident,” Mosquera said in an interview with AL DÍA. Mosquera moved to Philadelphia from Ecuador with the idea of staying for a couple of years of school and then returning to his homeland.

However, he got the opportunity to purchase his first restaurant — a Colombian restaurant in the city located on 6th and Hunting Park. Despite not knowing a ton about the restaurant industry, he decided to take a risk and three decades later, that risk proved to be a successful one.

For more than 30 years now, his restaurant, Tierra Colombiana, has served the Philadelphia community with traditional Latin American and Caribbean cuisine.

About a decade later after the first one, Mosquera opened another restaurant, Mixto Restaurante, a Cuban, Latin American & Caribbean restaurant located in Center City.

Through hard work, determination, and risk-taking, Mosquera has turned himself into one of the premier restaurateurs in the city.

A VERY BIG FAMILY

Mosquera was born and raised in the Azuay Province in southern Ecuador, in the small town of Girón.

He comes from a very big family of 12 brothers and sisters; Mosquera is the third-oldest.

Growing up in such a big family had its ups and downs.

“I think it had benefits because we didn’t need anybody else to play with. We were a close family.

But also being [one of] the oldest meant having more responsibilities at an early age,” he said.

However, Mosquera credits the many sacrifices his parents made to put him and all his siblings through school, which was very difficult in South America for a family that wasn’t financially stable.

“Siempre digo que abrir un restaurante fue algo que nunca planeé. Fue algo que sucedió por accidente”, dijo Mosquera en una entrevista con AL DÍA. Mosquera se trasladó a Filadelfia desde Ecuador con la idea de quedarse simplemente un par de años de estudios y luego volver a su tierra natal.

Mosquera credits his success largely to two things: love and effort.

Upon graduating from high school, Mosquera worked as an English teacher.

At the time, teaching was a very common path for recent high school graduates in Ecuador.

However, having learned English in high school, but not really practicing the language regularly made Mosquera feel it wasn’t the right fit as a career path for him.

“I didn’t feel comfortable being a teacher,” said Mosquera.

After less than a year working as an English teacher, Mosquera decided to leave Ecuador and come to the United States at the age of 19, with the help of his older brother who had already been living in Philadelphia.

The first year or so of Mosquera’s settlement to the United States proved to be very difficult.

He missed his family and friends back home, and even though he had his brother who also lived in the city, Mosquera often spent much of his time alone.

“I always like to say, 'I grew up mentally here.'”

“Moving over here wasn’t easy. I didn’t know a lot of English. I started going to school, I started working at the time. So life became harder,” said Mosquera.

After getting past the first year of struggles navigating a new country, Mosquera started meeting new people, getting used to the customs and the transition became easier with each passing month.

“I appreciate all of that because that helped me to become what I am,” he said.

“I always like to say, ‘I grew up mentally here,’” he added.

AN ACCIDENTAL OPPORTUNITY

When he initially moved to Philadelphia, Mosquera was working at a shoe repair store in Center City.

His cousin was working at a restaurant at the time and told him about someone who was selling his restaurant business to move back home to Colombia.

Mosquera didn’t know a lot about the restaurant business or know how to cook

Colombian food, but took the opportunity to learn as much as he could.

He bought the restaurant using all of his savings, and that would begin a journey he hadn’t anticipated as a restaurant owner.

The workers at the restaurant were key to his success during the early stages of Mosquera’s ownership experience.

“They were like my guardian angels,” he said.

“They helped me every day to make sure that everything was okay… I felt very lucky with those people that helped me,” he added.

After a while, Mosquera’s brothers, sisters, and nieces started working with him at the restaurant and the business started to grow.

Years later, the government was having a federal auction for a Cuban restaurant on North 5th Street that had been confiscated.

Mosquera put in an offer bid, not expecting to win it. But he did.

In 1989, Mosquera moved Tierra Colombiana to its current location on North 5th Street.

During its early years, Tierra Colombiana combined Colombian and Cuban dishes for its menu.

Over time, as Mosquera took various trips to countries, from Peru, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico, he got the oppor-

tunity to try many of the different foods those countries have to offer.

“I’ve tasted the flavors, and sometimes I’ve tried to bring with me something to the restaurant to make part of our menu,” he said.

Today, Tierra Colombiana’s menu has expanded to include dishes and flavors that encompass Latin America and the Caribbean.

The restaurant has become a favorite of not only those of Latino and Caribbean descent but those interested in learning about and tasting the different flavors of those countries.

“It’s so nice to see sometimes that now the people who used to come to the restaurant back then, they come now with their kids and grandkids, and we’re still here,” said Mosquera.

In 2000, Mosquera officially opened the doors of another restaurant — Mixto Restaurante — in Center City.

Originally, the idea was to have its menu mirror that of Tierra Colombiana, however, with time, Mosquera came to learn that the clientele at Mixto was roughly 80% American and 20% Latino; a contrast from the clientele at Tierra.

“We make the menu at Mixto a little bit different, more upscale,” said Mosquera.

Mosquera credits his success in owning multiple restaurants largely to two things: love and effort.

“I always think that when you do something, you have to like what you do,” he said.

“Even if you don’t like it, you have to try to do your best,” he added.

Those values, plus the ability to work with his brothers, sisters, and nieces have paid huge dividends towards his success.

NAVIGATING A NEW NORMAL

Like many restaurants and businesses nationwide, Tierra Colombiana and Mixto were greatly impacted by the pandemic.

“It was very difficult at the beginning because they closed all restaurants, espeAPRIL 28 - MAY 5, 2021

cially in Philadelphia,” said Mosquera.

While some restaurants were able to operate in a limited fashion with takeout and delivery options, the lack of indoor dining made things more challenging.

In June 2020, the city started to permit outdoor dining at restaurants with social distancing measures in place.

In September, the city allowed 25% indoor capacity, before increasing capacity to 50% roughly a month later.

However, by November, many restaurants were forced to close indoor dining once again due to an increase of positive COVID-19 cases.

“It wasn’t an easy year, it was a difficult year. But thank God we survived and we are still here,” said Mosquera.

Now more than a year after the initial blow of the pandemic, about half of the staff has returned to work and most restaurants are allowed to welcome indoor dining at 50% capacity.

The pandemic has been quite the learning experience for Mosquera.

It has taught him about the immense importance of having money saved, in the event of something unexpected or unforeseen happening — like a pandemic.

“If something happened and I wasn’t prepared for it, it could have been a lot worse,” he noted.

As a business owner, the effects of the pandemic have also caused Mosquera to gain an even greater appreciation for his employees.

“In those early months or when we were open to 25%, it was so difficult to see them not working,” he said.

“But I learned that if you work hard, if you try to do the right things, you’ll survive and you will continue. And that’s what we are doing now. We are hoping for the best,” he said.

AN EVOLVING CITY

Having lived in Philadelphia for more than three decades, Mosquera has seen many changes within the City of Brotherly Love.

He recalls arriving in the city during a time when there were, as he described, “just patches of good areas where you could live,” mainly the Rittenhouse Square, Old City, and Washington Square neighborhoods.

Much of the other areas of the city were abandoned, litter strewn, with old, worn-down houses and a lot of empty spaces and lots.

“Since I moved, until now, I’ve seen big changes. I love the changes Philadelphia is making,” said Mosquera.

From the buildings and businesses, and particularly restaurants, the city has seen great expansion over the years.

“Philadelphia, to me, is becoming one of the nicest cities to live in,” said Mosquera.

The addition of so many Latino and multicultural restaurants in the city has brought great competition and has always made Mosquera stay at the top of his game.

“The restaurant business is a crazy business because it demands you to work hard,” he said.

Considering the importance and value people of all ethnicities, nationalities, and cultures place on eating, the restaurant industry is crucial to sustain and enhance the growth of a city.

“I think it’s important for restaurants to be authentic and work with each other to satisfy our customer needs,” said Mosquera.

THE LAND OF OPPORTUNITIES

Mosquera’s journey is a familiar one to many immigrant entrepreneurs who arrive in the United States.

“I still think the United States is a country of opportunities,” he said.

For generations, people have emigrated to the United States in search of a better life, striving towards the so-called American Dream.

As someone who has not only found but built his success in this country, Mosquera often advises his nieces and nephews about his keys to success.

“Be risky,” he said. “Do whatever you are trying to do, but try to do it the right way and work hard and go for it. Don’t be scared.”

There are going to be many obstacles along the way, but a healthy dose of fearlessness can go a long way. A hard work ethic can also go a long way towards achieving your goals.

“All I did was work hard, and I still work hard. I’ve been working hard over 37 years and I still work the same way I did back then, with no stopping,” said Mosquera.

Mosquera often worked more than 20 hours a day, six days a week. But sometimes that is what it took to reach the heights he desired.

“The United States is still a country of opportunities. But it doesn’t come to you, you have to look for it. You have to work very hard for it and don’t be scared to do what you need to do. That’s what I did.” z • 17

Sin embargo, el hecho de haber aprendido inglés en el instituto, pero no haber practicado realmente el idioma de forma regular, hizo que Mosquera sintiera que no era la carrera adecuada para él.

“No me sentía cómodo siendo profesor”, dice Mosquera.

Tras menos de un año trabajando como profesor de inglés, Mosquera decidió dejar Ecuador y venir a Estados Unidos a los 19 años, con la ayuda de su hermano

“Siempre me gusta decir que crecí mentalmente aquí”.

Mosquera didn’t have much knowledge of the restaurant business, nor did he know how to cook Colombian food, but he took the opportunity to learn all he could.

El primer año de asentamiento de Mosquera en Estados Unidos resultó muy difícil.

Echaba de menos a su familia y a sus amigos en su país, y aunque tenía a su hermano que también vivía en la ciudad, Mosquera pasaba a menudo gran parte de su tiempo solo.

“Mudarse aquí no fue fácil. No sabía mucho inglés. Empecé a ir a la escuela y a trabajar en esa época. Así que la vida se hizo más difícil”, dice Mosquera.

Después de superar el primer año de dificultades para navegar en un nuevo país, Mosquera empezó a conocer gente nueva, a adaptarse a las costumbres y la transición se hizo más fácil con cada mes que pasaba.

“Agradezco todo eso porque me ayudó a convertirme en lo que soy”, dijo.

“Siempre me gusta decir que crecí mentalmente aquí”, añadió.

UNA OPORTUNIDAD ACCIDENTAL

Cuando se trasladó inicialmente a Filadelfia, Mosquera trabajaba en una tienda de reparación de calzado en Center City.

restaurante y le habló de alguien que estaba vendiendo su negocio de restauración para volver a su país, Colombia.

Mosquera no tenía muchos conocimientos sobre el negocio de la restauración ni sabía cocinar comida colombiana, pero aprovechó la oportunidad para aprender todo lo que pudo.

Compró el restaurante con todos sus ahorros, y así comenzó un viaje que no había previsto como propietario de un restaurante.

Los trabajadores del restaurante fueron fundamentales durante las primeras etapas de la experiencia de Mosquera como propietario.

“Fueron como mis ángeles de la guarda”, dijo.

“Me ayudaban todos los días para asegurarse de que todo iba bien... Me sentí muy afortunado con esa gente que me ayudó”, añadió.

Después de un tiempo, los hermanos, hermanas y sobrinas de Mosquera empezaron a trabajar con él en el restaurante y el negocio empezó a crecer.

El primer restaurante, situado en la 6ª Avenida del Parque de la Caza, era un restaurante típico colombiano, con cocina tradicional colombiana.

Años más tarde, el gobierno puso un restaurante cubano en subasta federal.

Era un establecimiento de la calle 5 Norte que había sido confiscado.

Mosquera presentó una oferta, sin esperar realmente ganarla. Pero lo hizo.

En 1989, Mosquera trasladó Tierra Colombiana a su actual ubicación en la calle 5 Norte.

Durante sus primeros años, Tierra Colombiana combinaba platos colombianos

Mosquera atribuye su éxito a dos cosas: el amor y el esfuerzo. y cubanos en su menú.

Con el tiempo, cuando Mosquera hizo varios viajes a países, desde Perú, Colombia, Costa Rica y México, tuvo la oportunidad de probar muchas de las diferentes comidas que esos países ofrecen.

“He probado los sabores, y a veces he intentado traer algo al restaurante para que forme parte de nuestro menú”, dijo.

Hoy, el menú de Tierra Colombiana se ha ampliado exponencialmente para incluir platos y sabores que abarcan América Latina y el Caribe.

El restaurante se ha convertido en uno de los favoritos no sólo de los descendientes de latinos y caribeños, sino también de los interesados en conocer y degustar los diferentes sabores de esos países.

“Es muy bonito ver a veces que ahora la gente que venía al restaurante entonces, viene ahora con sus hijos y nietos, y nosotros seguimos aquí”, dice Mosquera.

En el año 2000, Mosquera abrió oficialmente las puertas de otro restaurante -Mixto Restaurante- en Center City.

En un principio, la idea era que su menú fuera similar al de Tierra Colombiana, pero con el tiempo Mosquera se dio cuenta de que la clientela de Mixto era aproximadamente un 80% estadounidense y un 20% latina, lo que contrastaba con la clientela de Tierra.

“Hacemos el menú de Mixto un poco diferente, más exclusivo”, dijo Mosquera.

Mosquera atribuye su éxito como propietario de varios restaurantes en gran medida a dos cosas: el amor y el esfuerzo.

“Siempre pienso que cuando haces algo, te tiene que gustar lo que haces”, dijo.

“Aunque no te guste, tienes que intentar hacerlo lo mejor posible”, añadió.

Esos valores, además de la capacidad de trabajar con sus hermanos, hermanas y sobrinas, le han reportado grandes dividendos para su éxito.

NAVEGANDO UNA NUEVA NORMALIDAD

Al igual que muchos restaurantes y negocios de todo el país, Tierra Colombiana y Mixto se vieron muy afectados por la pandemia.

“Fue muy difícil al principio porque realmente cerraron todos los restaurantes, especialmente en Filadelfia”, dijo Mosquera.

Aunque algunos restaurantes pudieron operar de forma limitada con opciones de comida a domicilio y para llevar, la falta de comedores interiores hizo que las cosas fueran más difíciles.

En junio, la ciudad empezó a permitir las comidas al aire libre en los restaurantes con medidas de distanciamiento social.

En septiembre, la ciudad permitió un 25% de capacidad interior, antes de aumentar la capacidad al 50% aproximadamente un mes después.

Sin embargo, en noviembre, muchos restaurantes se vieron obligados a volver a cerrar los comedores interiores debido al aumento de casos positivos de COVID-19.

“No fue un año fácil, fue un año difícil.

Pero gracias a Dios hemos sobrevivido y seguimos aquí”, dijo Mosquera.

Ahora, más de un año después del golpe inicial de la pandemia, cerca de la mitad de la plantilla ha vuelto al trabajo y la mayoría de los restaurantes pueden acoger a los comensales en su interior al 50% de su capacidad.

La pandemia ha sido toda una experiencia de aprendizaje para Mosquera.

Por un lado, le ha enseñado la inmensa importancia de tener dinero ahorrado, en caso de que ocurra algo inesperado o imprevisto, como una pandemia.

“Si ocurriera algo y no estuviera preparado para ello, podría haber sido mucho peor”, señaló.

Como empresario, los efectos de la pandemia también han hecho que Mosquera aprecie aún más a sus empleados.

“En esos primeros meses o cuando estábamos abiertos al 25%, era muy difícil verlos sin trabajar”, dijo.

“Pero aprendí que si trabajas duro, si intentas hacer las cosas bien, sobrevivirás y continuarás. Y eso es lo que estamos haciendo ahora. Esperamos lo mejor”, añadió,

UNA CIUDAD EN EVOLUCIÓN

Habiendo vivido en Filadelfia durante más de tres décadas, Mosquera ha visto muchos cambios en la Ciudad del Amor Fraternal.

Recuerda que llegó a la ciudad en una época en la que había, como él mismo describe, “sólo zonas buenas en las que se podía vivir”, refiriéndose a los barrios de Rittenhouse Square, Old City y Washington Square.

Gran parte de las demás zonas de la ciudad estaban abandonadas, llenas de basura, con casas viejas y desgastadas y un montón de espacios y solares vacíos.

“Desde que me mudé, hasta ahora, he visto grandes cambios. Me encantan los cambios que está haciendo Filadelfia”, dijo Mosquera.

Desde los edificios y los negocios, y en particular los restaurantes, la ciudad ha visto una gran expansión a lo largo de los años.

La incorporación de tantos restaurantes latinos y multiculturales en la ciudad ha traído consigo una gran competencia y ha hecho que Mosquera se mantenga siempre al pie del cañón.

“El negocio de la restauración es una locura porque te exige trabajar mucho”, dijo.

Teniendo en cuenta la importancia y el valor que las personas de todas las etnias, nacionalidades y culturas tienen para comer, la industria de la restauración es crucial para mantener y mejorar el crecimiento de una ciudad.

“Creo que es importante que los restaurantes sean auténticos y colaboren entre sí para satisfacer las necesidades de nuestros clientes”, dijo Mosquera.

LA TIERRA DE LAS OPORTUNIDADES

El viaje de Mosquera es familiar para muchos otros empresarios inmigrantes que llegan a Estados Unidos.

“Sigo pensando que Estados Unidos es un país de oportunidades”, dijo.

Durante generaciones, la gente ha emigrado a Estados Unidos en busca de una vida mejor, luchando por el llamado sueño americano.

Como alguien que no sólo ha encontrado, sino que ha construido, su éxito en este país, Mosquera suele aconsejar a sus sobrinos sobre sus claves de éxito.

“Sé arriesgado”, dice. “Haz lo que quieras, pero intenta hacerlo de la manera correcta y trabaja duro y ve a por ello. No tengas miedo”.

Va a haber muchos obstáculos en el camino, pero un nivel saludable de intrepidez puede recorrer un largo camino.

Una ética de trabajo duro también puede ayudar mucho a conseguir tus objetivos y hacer algo de ti mismo.

“Todo lo que hice fue trabajar duro, y todavía lo hago. Llevo más de 37 años trabajando duro y sigo trabajando igual que entonces, sin parar”, dice Mosquera.

Mosquera trabajaba a menudo más de 20 horas al día, seis días a la semana. Pero a veces eso es lo que hacía falta para alcanzar las cotas que deseaba.

“Estados Unidos sigue siendo un país de oportunidades. Pero no vienen a ti, tienes que buscarlas. Tienes que trabajar muy duro para ello y no tener miedo de hacer lo que tienes que hacer. Eso es lo que hice yo”.z • 19

What has been the most important challenge and achievement during the pandemic?

The most important challenge was to, first of all, survive. We were hearing that a lot of places were closing down, so that was the first thing we wanted to do. We wanted to make sure that employees get their checks every week. Our achievement was last month, and what we did in sales. We did better than before the pandemic.

El reto más importante fue, en primer lugar, sobrevivir. Nos enteramos de que muchos lugares estaban cerrando, así que eso fue lo primero que quisimos hacer. Queríamos asegurarnos de que los empleados recibieran su cheque cada semana. Nuestro logro fue el mes pasado, y lo que hicimos en ventas. Nos fue mejor que antes de la pandemia.

What do you have to say to your customers and employees?

¿Qué quisiera decir a sus clientes y empleados?

First of all, thank you so much for coming to the restaurant for the past 15 years because I know a lot of customers that have been coming to the restaurant since day one, and there are some that come to the restaurant three times a week with their family to dine with us. We want to keep treating them like part of the family. To our employees, we want to say thank you for staying with us through this pandemic. It’s been hard for all of us. We had to adapt, maybe more work than before. Thank you for that because we recognize that because of their hard work, we are able to be successful.

En primer lugar, muchas gracias por venir al restaurante durante los últimos 15 años, porque conozco a muchos clientes que vienen al restaurante desde el primer día, y hay algunos que vienen al restaurante tres veces a la semana con su familia a cenar con nosotros. Queremos seguir tratándolos como parte de la familia.

A nuestros empleados, queremos darles las gracias por seguir con nosotros durante esta pandemia. Ha sido duro para todos nosotros.

If there’s one specific message or piece of advice I can give to aspiring entrepreneurs it is to understand that challenges you face in business are the same challenges you face in life. It’s just maybe more accelerated with a whole lot more demands and more liabilities, but that’s what you have to look forward to. Be ready for those challenges.

To my customers and my team over the years, I’m just really grateful for their support. If you work in a restaurant, it’s not easy. You gotta be on your toes, you gotta keep up with the pace that we need, and I’ve had amazing people working with me throughout the years. To Philadelphians and beyond, I’m just really grateful for everyone’s support because I love what I do. I’m gonna keep doing what I do, and the fact that people recognize that and they still show up, and they accept my evolution as a human being that translates to the evolution of my business, and it is still here, that means everything.

What is your message to aspiring entrepreneurs?

The ones that are crazy enough to change the world are the ones that do.

Soy una persona que siempre avanza. Nunca vuelvo atrás.

Simplemente sigo adelante. Una vez que tomo una decisión, ya he terminado con ella. Tomo mis decisiones y sigo adelante, no hago “qué hubiera pasado si”, “debería haber”, no, eso no forma parte del vocabulario.

¿Qué quisiera decir a sus clientes y empleados?

A mis clientes y a mi equipo a lo largo de los años, sólo les agradezco mucho su apoyo. Trabajar en un restaurante no es fácil. Tienes que estar atento, tienes que mantener el ritmo que necesitamos, y he tenido gente increíble trabajando conmigo a lo largo de los años.

A los habitantes de Filadelfia y más allá, sólo estoy muy agradecido por el apoyo de todos porque amo lo que hago. Voy a seguir haciendo lo que hago, y el hecho de que la gente lo reconozca y siga apareciendo, y acepte mi evolución como ser humano que se traduce en la evolución de mi negocio, y que siga aquí, lo significa todo.

What has been the most important challenge and achievement during the pandemic?

One of our biggest achievements during the pandemic was opening up and people not having jobs. No jobs mean there’s no money, and no money means there’s no business, and how could we push through during COVID and make it out alright? We’re more than alright. Our achievement is bringing in the customers, having good food, having five stars, it’s honestly been a true achievement for us.

Uno de nuestros mayores logros durante la pandemia fue la apertura y que la gente no tuviera trabajo. Si no hay trabajo, no hay dinero, y si no hay dinero, no hay negocio, y ¿cómo pudimos salir adelante durante el COVID y salir bien? Estamos más que bien. Nuestro logro es traer a los clientes, tener buena comida, tener cinco estrellas, sinceramente ha sido un verdadero logro para nosotros.

If you need that push, this is it. Just go for it, and you will achieve it.

¿Cómo ha sido su trayectoria?

We established the bakery in 2008. It was my mother and me.

It was hard times because a divorce happened, my family kind of split. So, if you ask me to reflect on my journey, it’s painful. It’s been a lot of work, but it’s also been so rewarding. I can’t even complain. It led my mother and me to have to start again in this location. As a matter of fact, when we found this place, there wasn’t a kitchen. We had to build everything from the ground up, and I want to take this time and thank my family members because a lot of them came through. It’s been a lot of teamwork, a lot of effort — a lot of effort that doesn’t just come from me. It’s been like a family.

Fundamos la panadería en 2008. Fuimos mi madre y yo. Fueron tiempos difíciles porque hubo un divorcio, mi familia se dividió.

Así que, si me pides que reflexione sobre mi trayectoria, es doloroso. Ha sido mucho trabajo, pero también ha sido muy gratificante.

Ni siquiera puedo quejarme. Nos llevó a mi madre y a mí a tener que empezar de nuevo en este lugar. De hecho, cuando encontramos este lugar, no había cocina. Tuvimos que construir todo desde los cimientos, y quiero aprovechar este momento para dar las gracias a los miembros de mi familia porque muchos de ellos salieron adelante. Ha sido mucho trabajo en equipo, mucho esfuerzo, mucho esfuerzo que no viene sólo de mí. Ha sido como una familia.

¿Cómo ha sido su trayectoria?

Looking back on your career, reflect on your journey I’ve worked in restaurants almost all my life since I lived in Mexico City. If you worked at a restaurant in Mexico City, it’s like graduating from a culinary university. When I arrived in this country, in the year 2000. I first worked in factories, but at the same time, I looked for work in the restaurant industry. I worked as a dishwasher, then as a busboy, and eventually a food runner.

I’ve always liked gastronomy and in this country, I’ve always focused on what type of service the American market likes. How do they like to be served? It’s about making them feel valued in a restaurant. Our customers feel safe in this restaurant, they feel valued, not just in the American market, but also the Latino market feels valued and comfortable.

He trabajado en restaurantes casi toda mi vida, desde que vivía en la Ciudad de México. Si trabajas en un restaurante en la Ciudad de México, es como si te graduaras en una universidad culinaria. Cuando llegué a este país, en el año 2000. Primero trabajé en fábricas, pero al mismo tiempo, busqué trabajo en la industria restaurantera. Trabajé como lavaplatos, luego como ayudante de camarero y, finalmente, como encargado de la comida. Siempre me ha gustado la gastronomía y en este país, siempre me he centrado en qué tipo de servicio le gusta al mercado americano. ¿Cómo les gusta que les sirvan? Se trata de que se sientan valorados en un restaurante. Nuestros clientes se sienten seguros en este restaurante, se sienten valorados, no sólo el mercado americano, sino también el latino se siente valorado y cómodo.

¿Qué quisiera decir a sus clientes y empleados?

The pandemic has affected us, but not to the point we had to make a decision to close or we can’t do it. Thank god our clientele continued to order through their phones. They were always there for us. Perhaps, not at a table, but they would always order take out.

La pandemia nos ha afectado, pero no hasta el punto de tener que tomar la decisión de cerrar o no poder hacerlo. Gracias a Dios, nuestra clientela siguió haciendo pedidos a través de sus teléfonos.

Siempre estaban ahí para nosotros. Quizás, no en una mesa, pero siempre pedían para llevar.

he name of Chavela Vargas resonates as strongly in the Latin American imaginary as her voice when she sang the most desolate rancheras.

Born in Costa Rica but Mexican in her own right, Vargas is considered one of the leading and most peculiar figures of ranchera music.

Her eight decades in her beloved Mexico were filled with sadness, anger, and a lot of alcohol, which translated into a particular interpretation of José Alfredo Jiménez's genre, with just a guitar and her powerful voice.

Dressed as a man, cigarette in hand and gun in her belt, Chavela Vargas is perhaps one of the most anecdotal figures in Latin American history.

Now, the Mexican author María Cortina, a journalist and close friend of the singer, has released a new book to solidify the “memory of the future” about Vargas.

“Chavela Vargas: entre García Lorca y Pedro Páramo” is a book that recounts Cortina's conversations and anecdotes with Chavela, whom she

Sus ocho décadas en su México querido estuvieron llenas de tristezas, rabias, y mucho alcohol, que se tradujeron en una interpretación particular del género de José Alfredo Jiménez, con apenas una guitarra y su poderosa voz.

Vestida como hombre, con cigarrillo en mano y pistola en el cinturón, Chavela Vargas es quizás una de las figuras más anecdóticas de la historia de América Latina.

Ahora, la mexicana María Cortina, periodista y amiga cercana de la cantante, ha lanzado un nuevo libro que se propone afianzar la “memoria del futuro” sobre Vargas.

The world of “Pedro Páramo,” a novel by Mexican writer Juan Rulfo, was also part of the universe of Vargas, who expressed a fascination for Comala, the town in the Rulfo story where all the inhabitants are dead.

Cortina has taken the idea from the Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, a great friend of Chavela's, that the singer had three 'reincarnations' in her life, milestone moments from which Chavela emerged at different times. The first was her trip to Mexico at age 17, the second her return to the stage at age 72 after an absence of more than a decade in which she lost herself in the hell of alcohol, and the third at age 93, shortly before her heart “temporarily” stopped beating, says Cortina.

That's how she structures this new book about the legendary singer.

“Those of us who still cry when we hear her singing; those of us who think of her when our souls ache; those of us who insist on unraveling her truths, those of us who invoke her when a drink of courage urges us, know that since August 5, 2012, Chavela has been living her third life,” Cortina wrote as an ode to her friend. z

he legends of the Miccosukee cosmology, a tribe from the Lower Creek region, tell of ancestors who “fell” from the sky into a lake in northern Florida.

In the 17th century, the Spanish convinced some of that nation’s inhabitants to move to Spanish Florida and occupy lands where tribes had previously lived - back in 1500, there had been a struggle for colonial supremacy on the southern frontier that had the Creek as a protagonist.

The Miccosukee people, who had already made hunting and fishing expeditions and were familiar with the area, moved to escape the white invasion, creating new settlements where they engaged in trade, crafts, and medicine.

However, through the centuries, they had to continue fighting against settlers

ENGLISH and slave traders and joining other Creek clans to fight in the successive Seminole Wars, until they finally settled in the Everglades in the middle of the 19th century.

Over the years, and facing harsh assimilation, the Miccosukee Indian Village was created in South Florida, in the heart of the Everglades, where the Miccosukee maintained their own laws, medicine, and culture.

All this is a long introduction to the history of this ancient tribe whose origins are lost in myth but whose existence and capacity for survival and struggle for self-determination are real.

This survival is what Chilean artist Felipe Mujica was able to capture in The Swaying Motion on the Bank of the River Falls, the Latin American artist’s first major exhibition in the United States that will open at the Pérez Art Museum Miami on May 20.

as leyendas de la cosmología Miccosukee, tribu de la región del Lower Creek, cuentan que sus ancestros “cayeron” del cielo en un lago al norte de Florida.

En el siglo XVII, los españoles convencieron a algunos de sus habitantes a trasladarse a la Florida española y ocupar tierras en las que antes habían vivido otras tribus -en 1500 había habido una lucha por la supremacía colonial en la frontera sur que tuvo a los Creek como protagonista.

Los Miccosukee, que habían realizado ya expediciones de caza y pesca y conocían la zona, fueron moviéndose para escapar de la invasión de los blancos y se crearon nuevos asentamientos, donde se dedicaban al comercio, la artesanía y la medicina.

Sin embargo, a través de los siglos tuvieron que seguir luchando contra colonos y traficantes de esclavos y uniéndose a otros

clanes Creek para combatir en sucesivas Guerras Seminolas hasta que, finalmente, se establecieron en los Everglades a mitad del siglo XIX. Con el transcurrir de los años y haciendo frente a una dura asimilación, se creó el Miccosukee Indian Village en el sur de Florida, en el corazón de los Everglades, donde los Miccosukee mantienen sus propias leyes, medicina y cultura.

CULTURA ENGLISH The exhibition consists of an installation of more than 20 fabric panels or “curtains” that interact with the space and dialogue with the Patchwork tradition of the Miccosukee tribe, with whom Mujica has been collaborating for years, especially with native artisan Khadijah Cypress.

The curation is inspired by the rich ecological and cultural diversity of South Florida and especially by the work of Cypress, founder of the Miccosukee Creativity Center, a center that promotes traditional crafts and offers a space for its members to learn patchwork, beadwork, or basketry.

Similarly, the designs created by Cypress for Mujica’s fabric panels incorporate motifs, symbols, and patterns from the natural world of South Florida and Miccosukee traditions.

“We are thrilled to present Felipe Mujica’s work, in particular how his collaborations build relationships and dialogue with other communities,” said PAMM Associate Curator Jennifer Inacio.

One of the particularities of the installation is the placement of the works, which makes visitors move through the space while air slowly rocks the curtains, producing a global movement in which the viewer also becomes a co-participant. There will also be interactive elements.

It is an exhibition that refers to both adaptation and exploration and transformation and that aims to foster a connection with the indigenous communities of South Florida.

“This group of curtains at PAMM adds a new dimension to my work as well as serves as a platform for the study and promotion of Native American culture. I am excited to see this combination because even if it’s done in a minimal and abstract way, the technique of Miccosukee Patchwork is placed in a completely new context, in a different scale, in dialogue with architecture, space, the viewer, the elements, and also in dialogue with forms and colors while simultaneously maintaining its traditional character,” Mujica said in a recent interview. z

Perhaps you’ve seen this plot before in films like Room in Rome (2010) or Blue is the Warmest Color (2013) because Venice is one of the favorite romantic locations of numerous filmographies.

This familiarity, together with a fear of clichés, caught the attention of the film crew of When in Venice and led to their decision to turn it into an interactive film.

When in Venice is a romantic film

by Colombian director Juan Zapata featuring Brazilian actress Bellatrix Serra and German Peter Ketnath. They play the traveling couple, Max and Maria, who meet in the magical city.

The film, shot in 2018, avoided the usual places frequented by tourists and reminds us now of the world before the pandemic, bringing with it a large dose of positivity.

When asked in a recent interview about the reason for an interactive film, director Zapata did not hesitate to tell the ins and outs: “Since the shooting, I observed in my team and people close to me a discussion regarding the ending. This (intentional) controversy spread during the post-production process, which gave me the idea of giving people the possibility of choosing the ending.”

“The technological evolution of filmmaking stimulates me creatively. The fact that the new platforms allow the viewer to decide, as in this case, what each one of us would do if we were in the place of the main characters, allows for a kind of active empathy in the viewer, beyond traditional structures,” he said.

Tal vez la trama te suene ya de películas como Habitación en Roma (2010) o La vida de Adèle (2013), pues Venecia es la localización favorita de numerosas filmografías.

Esa familiaridad, acompañada del miedo a los clichés, es lo que llamó la atención del equipo de rodaje de Una vez en Venecia antes que decidieran convertirla en una película interactiva.

Una vez en Venecia es el film romántico del director colombiano Juan Zapata junto a la actriz brasileña Bellatrix Serra y el alemán Peter Ketnath, interpretando ambos la pareja de viajantes, Max y María, que se conocen en la mágica ciudad.

Esta polémica (intencional) se extendió durante el proceso de postproducción, lo cual me despertó la idea de dar la posibilidad a las personas de escoger el final”.

“La evolución tecnológica del cine me estimula creativamente. El que las nuevas plataformas permitan que el espectador decida, como en este caso, lo que cada uno haría estando en el lugar de los personajes protagónicos, permite un tipo de empatía activa en el espectador, mas allá de las estructuras tradicionales”, añadió el director.

hen Lucila de María Godoy Alcayaga, better known as Gabriela Mistral, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945 she was already a veteran writer.

Born in Chile in 1889, she became part of the poetic modernism led by Rubén Darío. Darío invited her to collaborate in the magazine Elegancias, which the master edited in Paris.

Her pseudonym was used for the first time in 1908 to introduce her poem “Del Pasado,” a composition published in the newspaper El Coquimbo. It was derived from the names of Dario’s two

ENGLISH most admired authors: Gabriele D’Annunzio and Frederic Mistral.

Mistral started writing around 1904 and ten years later she won the Chilean National Poetry Prize for Sonetos de la Muerte (Sonnets of Death). Her signature became habitual in the newspapers.

All the while she was gathering the poems that would form Desolación (1922).

This book was followed by Ternura (1923), Tala (1938) and Lagar (1954).

In 1923 she also published an anthology, Lecturas para mujeres destinadas a la enseñanza de la lengua.

uando Lucila de María Godoy Alcayaga, más conocida como Gabriela Mistral, fue galardonada con el Premio Nobel de Literatura, en 1945, ya era una escritora veterana.

Nacida en Vicuña (Chile) el 7 de abril de 1889, se vinculó pronto al modernismo poético que comandaba Rubén Darío. Darío mismo la invitó a colaborar en la revista Elegancias, que el maestro editaba en París.

Su pseudónimo fue utilizado por primera vez en 1908, al frente de su poema “Del pasado”, composición que publicó en el periódico El Coquimbo. Procedía de los nombres de sus dos autores más admirados: Gabriele D’Annunzio y Federic Mistral.

Había empezado a escribir hacia 1904, y diez años después ya conseguía el Premio Nacional de Poesía de Chile por Sonetos de la muerte. Su firma se volvió habitual en los periódicos mientras iba reuniendo los poemas que formarían Desolación (1922).

A este libro le sucederían Ternura (1923), Tala (1938) y Lagar (1954).

En 1923 publicó también una antología, Lecturas para mujeres destinadas a la enseñanza de la lengua.

Her aesthetic preferences were not avant-garde either; she always preferred naturalness to stridency. Even so, she was a well-traveled and cosmopolitan personality. In 1924, she was invited to Mexico to participate in the educational reform that was being promoted there, and she began her traveling career visiting Europe and the United States.

She shone with her own light, especially during the 1930s, a decade in which she did not stop traveling and receiving distinctions from many different countries.

Mistral taught at various American institutions - Bernard College, Vassar College, and Middlebury College. She also taught in many university centers in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Panama, among many others.

In 1933 she was appointed consul of Chile in Madrid, and the following year she was proclaimed “adoptive daughter of

Puerto Rico.” During those years, her travelling was impressive: Lisbon, Guatemala, Brazil, France, Mexico, and Italy. Wherever she went she left a warm memory.

Tala was dedicated to the Spanish children victims of the civil war. Mistral won the Nobel Prize and the Chilean National Literature Prize in 1951, and died in 1957 in New York, having achieved world fame and recognition. In New York, she served as Chilean Consul and also as a delegate to the United Nations Assembly.

econciling two worlds as seemingly different as art and science is not easy, even if imagination is an essential part of both. How do you understand string theory or genetic mutation if you can’t also think of them in abstract terms?

What looks more like a Pollock than a supernova?

In the early 2000s, Paulinho Mosko, a Brazilian composer, and musician met through fellow artist and friend Jorge Drexler, Pablo Casacuberta, one of those wonderful ‘Da Vinci’ who makes many kinds of art. Moska and Casacuberta began to travel around the American continent to create a documentary series entitled Zoombido exploring the processes of musical composition.

Six years later, and with more than two hundred episodes behind them, both artists wanted to continue traveling and discovering music and, as Casacuberta was the son of scientists, they decided to take advantage of their travels to go in search of Latino scientists who could explain how the world is changing.

Each time they stopped in a country, Moska would compose a song about a scientific idea and invite a local author, including visual artists and tattoo artists, to showcase the artistic personalities of Latin America, Moska told Reporte Índigo.

The project, which they started in 2017, was very innovative and a good test of bridging disciplines. The problem was

ENGLISH that scientific production companies or television stations were uninterested in art, nor those dedicated to art understood why they should talk about science.

The rejections came and went until finally HBO decided to acquire Tu Casa es Mi Casa, a documentary miniseries in which they travel through 12 Latin American countries in one-hour episodes and included at least a dozen new tattoos on Paulinho Moska’s left arm in the form of a travel diary.

“Every Sunday, we landed in a country. On Monday, we had the day to walk around the city and plan things; there was pre-production, where we were going to film, the cafés, the museums, the squares, and there were local producers who had already pre-produced these locations,” explained the Brazilian.

For Moska, the greatness of the project, in which musicians and artists such as Ximena Sariñana and Fernando Llanos participate, is that it shows a Latin America different from the one we know and opens a window to other cultures and customs.

onciliar dos mundos aparentemente tan diferentes como el arte y la ciencia no es sencillo, aunque la imaginación sea parte esencial de ambos. ¿Cómo entender la teoría de cuerdas o la mutación genética si no puedes pensarlas también en términos abstractos? ¿Qué hay que se parezca más a un Pollock que una supernova?

A principios del años 2000, Paulinho Moska, compositor y músico brasileño, conoció a través del también artista y amigo Jorge Drexler a Pablo Casacuberta, uno de esos ‘Da Vinci’ maravillosos que realizan muchos tipos de arte. Moska y Casacuberta empezaron a viajar por todo el continente americano para crear una serie documental titulada Zoombido con la que exploraban los procesos de composición musical.

Seis años después y con más de dos centenares de episodios a su espalda, ambos artistas aún querían seguir viajando y descubriendo música y decidieron aprovechar sus viajes para ir en busca de científicos latinos que les explicasen de qué forma está cambiando el mundo.

en un país, Moska componía una canción sobre una idea científica e invitaban a un autor del lugar, incluidos artistas visuales y tatuadores, para mostrar las personalidades artísticas de Latinoamérica, contó Moska a Reporte Índigo.

El proyecto, que iniciaron en 2017, era muy innovador y una buena prueba de los puentes que se tienden entre disciplinas.

El problema fue que ni las productoras y televisiones científicas se interesaban por el arte ni las dedicadas al arte entendían por qué debían hablar sobre la ciencia.

Los rechazos se sucedieron hasta que al fin HBO se decidió a adquirir Tu Casa es Mi Casa, una miniserie documental en la que recorren 12 países latinoamericanos a través de episodios de una hora y que incluía al menos una docena de nuevos tatuajes en el brazo izquierdo de Paulinho Moska a modo de diario de viaje.

“Todos los domingos aterrizábamos en un país, el lunes teníamos el día para caminar por la ciudad y plantear las cosas, sí había una preproducción, de dónde íbamos a grabar, los cafés, los museos, las plazas, y había productores locales que ya habían preproducido estas locaciones”, explicó el brasileño.

Para Moska, la grandeza del proyecto, en el que participan músicos y artistas como Ximena Sariñana o Fernando Llanos, es que muestra una Latinoamérica diferente a la que se conoce y abre una ventana a otras culturas y costumbres.

ast Tuesday, a court found former Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin guilty on all counts in the murder of George Floyd.

After deliberating for ten and a half hours, the jury brought to an end a nearly three-week trial, amid ongoing testimony, and a nation on the edge of its seat.

Chauvin was charged and found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter for his actions on May 25, 2020, when, by pinning Floyd to the ground with his knee, he caused his death by asphyxiation.

After the moment of the reading of the sentence, the entire country celebrated with cheers a historic decision, where the accountability of law enforcement, and in the midst of a social revolution against systemic racism, became the first step towards real change.

Now, the country awaits a true reform of the judicial system. z

l pasado martes, un tribunal declaró al ex agente policial de Minnesota, Derek Chauvin, culpable en todos los cargos por el asesinado de George Floyd.

Tras deliberar durante diez horas y media, el jurado puso fin a un juicio de casi tres semanas, entre testimonios continuos, y un país al borde del asiento.

Chauvin fue acusado y declarado culpable de asesinato en segundo grado, asesinato en tercer grado, y homicidio en segundo grado por sus acciones el 25 de mayo de 2020, cuando, al inmovilizar a Floyd en el suelo con su rodilla, causó su muerte por asfixia.

Tras el momento de la lectura de la sentencia, el país entero celebró con vítores una decisión histórica, donde la rendición de cuentas de las fuerzas del orden, y en medio de una revolución social contra el racismo sistémico, se transformaba en el primer paso hacia un verdadero cambio.

Well, it just so happens that the determination and resilience of its citizens, especially immigrants, are much stronger than economic predictions.

We at AL DÍA have closely tracked food establishments and their coping mechanisms over the past few months. Between takeout, digital stores, and community organizing, it is precisely immigrant entrepreneurs who are keeping Philadelphia afloat.

It is precisely these small business owners who have made Philadelphia a cosmopolitan city, where every street and every corner is a journey of flavors and experiences.

Moreover, it is the city of resilience.

Just read stories like that of Jorge Mosquera, who appears on our cover of the week, and who tells us on the page (16) how his American Dream was founded on his ability to take risks, his adaptability, and his tenacity.

Mosquera is undoubtedly the best example of what it means to be a “citizen of the world.” z

In December, Nasdaq asked for improved diversity among the 3,000 companies on its exchange through a proposal filed with the Security and Exchange Commission.

Having at least two diverse board members: a woman and someone who identifies as an underrepresented minority or LGBTQ is one of the new rules in the proposal.

As of last year, 75% of Nasdaq’s companies failed to meet the suggested diver-

sity requirements.

Another requirement is that companies who do not disclose statistics on diversity could face being delisted from the exchange.

Inclusion and diversity are values that the higher-ups in the exchange have wanted to promote in order to improve their image and revenue.

“If you don’t have those diverse voices that are helping lead the company, then, frankly, it can impede your progress, can impede your success, and you can make mistakes,” Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman said. z

In March, 33 Vietnamese refugees were deported, despite Biden’s 100-day deportation moratorium. Even worse, the deportations directly violated a 2008 bilateral agreement between the U.S. and Vietnam, which protected immigrants from removal so long as they arrived in the states before 1995.

Several immigrant detention centers remain scattered throughout the states, each with documented cases of medical negligence, sexual and physical abuse, and inappropriate use of solitary confinement.

It doesn’t sound like a harmful label — built as it is into the official nomenclature of the advertising agencies, and the language of marketing executives and decision makers — yet its unconscious and odious semantics determines how the money gets spent.

You are “minority” because someone decides so and, in AL DIA’s case, we are further diminished by the additional sticker — in the media business a stigma — of being “Spanish,” “Hispanic” and a “person-of-color-owned” business, and lately “Brown”, as the new “Black and Brown” term mutates.
