n writing this, I do not seek to discredit the awardees at last year’s first annual AL DÍA 40 Under Forty. It was a virtual celebration quite literally eight months in the making.

It was the talk of the AL DÍA office in January of 2020 (and I’m sure earlier) before the world took a nosedive thanks to the omnipresence COVID-19.

Between March and May of that insane year, from an editorial perspective, we didn’t know if it was ever going to happen.

But it did, albeit virtual and with all 40 honorees celebrating from the safety of their own homes as the AL DÍA staff did the same from the roundtable room in our office.

The uncertainty surrounding the pandemic was a constant (still is).

The unfamiliarity of a virtual format was a mountain to climb, but after pulling it off, virtual celebrations became the norm for AL DÍA for the rest of 2020 and the beginning of 2021, as it celebrated its annual Hispanic Heritage Awards, and Top Lawyers, Top Doctors, Women of Merit, Top Restaurateurs and Top Nurses forums in the same manner.

In a year that was short and long in different ways, the AL DÍA staff became experts in the craft of creating engaging and powerful virtual programs.

40 Under Forty started that journey, so it’s only right that its second annual celebration reintroduces the in-person aspect that was missing from all events in the past year and a half.

Where the first was a story of perseverance through the darkest of times — and was a triumph in its own right — this year’s AL DÍA 40 Under Forty are the true fruits of 2020’s labors.

Be sure to be there on Aug. 27 at the Barnes Foundation for a more proper celebration of the Philadelphia region’s best and brightest under 40. z

l escribir esto, no pretendo desacreditar a los premiados en la primera edición anual de AL DÍA 40 Under Forty, el año pasado. Consistió en una celebración virtual, literalmente, tras ocho meses de preparación.

En enero de 2020 (o antes, casi seguro), la esperada celebración era la comidilla de la redacción de AL DÍA, pero entonces el cayó en picada gracias a la omnipresencia del COVID-19.

Entre marzo y mayo de ese loco año, desde una perspectiva editorial, no sabíamos si la celebración podría tener lugar finalmente.

Pero lo conseguimos, aunque fuera virtual y con los 40 homenajeados recibiendo sus premios desde la seguridad de sus hogares mientras el personal de AL DÍA hacía lo mismo desde la sala de juntas de nuestra oficina.

La incertidumbre en torno a la pandemia fue una constante (aún lo es).

La falta de familiaridad con un formato virtual era un importante obstáculo que superar, pero después de lograrlo, las celebraciones virtuales se convirtieron en la norma para AL DÍA durante el resto de 2020 y principios de 2021, ya que celebró sus premios anuales a la Herencia Hispana y Top Lawyers, Mejores foros de Doctores, Mujeres de Mérito, Mejores Restauradores y Mejores Enfermeras de la misma manera.

En un año que fue corto y largo en diferentes formas, el personal de AL DÍA se convirtió en experto en el oficio de crear programas virtuales atractivos y potentes.

40 Under Forty fue el inicio de ese nuevo viaje, pero lo que es correcto ahora es que su segunda edición reintroduzca el aspecto presencial que tanto echamos de menos en el último año y medio.

Así que, mientras la primera edición fue una historia de perseverancia en medio de un periodo difícil — un triunfo por derecho propio —, la segunda edición de los AL DÍA 40 Under Forty nos mostrará los verdaderos frutos de los esfuerzos de 2020.

hiladelphia, once known for its cheesesteaks, Ben Franklin, and Rocky, is now known for a much more sobering reason: gun violence.

Residents of Philly are taking action and trying to figure out ways to save their children and others from guns, however, one in particular is going to great distances.

Activist Jamal Johnson is heading to Washington D.C to highlight the systematic gun violence occurring in Philadelphia on a national scale. Despite the grueling hot weather, Johnson is more than willing to walk over 100 miles to show government officials the dire help Philadelphia needs.

He also has a team of supporters who are joining him on the journey.

“We need to stop this,” Johnson told Action News.

TAKING ACTION

He is hoping to meet with the leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus to discuss ways they could persuade Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney to treat gun violence as a public emergency.

“I mapped it out to three weeks,” he said. “We’ve extended it so other people could join and be a part of the whole thing.”

Johnson, who is from Germantown and served in the U.S. Marine Corps, has been very vocal about the

His mission, the “Stop Killing Us” march, began in 2017, when he was protesting against police brutality towards African-Americans all over the country. Many children and young men are dying from gun violence.

This is his fifth time traveling to Washington D.C. to show the country, and the mayor, that something needs to be done.

In January 2021, Johnson received attention when he went on a 26-day hunger strike to bring awareness to the murders of individuals in Philly.

News sources from all over Philadelphia covered his experience.

Johnson spent most of his time in front of City Hall protesting and demanding that Kenney do something about the gun epidemic. He also started a petition to get other locals involved in the plan.

It wasn’t until Feb. 13 that Kenney finally acknowledged Johnson’s activism.

Se trata del activista Jamal Johnson, que estos días se dirige a pie hasta Washington D.C para llamar la atención a nivel nacional sobre la violencia sistemática con armas de fuego que ocurre en Filadelfia. n late March, Andrea Ruiz stood virtually before a judge in Puerto Rico to testify about her ex-boyfriend’s pattern of emotional abuse and persecution. She spoke in great detail about how Miguel Ocasio stalked and harassed her, and threatened to post intimate photos of her on social media.

During the hearing, Ruiz filed a complaint against Ocasio, under the island’s domestic violence intervention and prevention law, pleading for his arrest after courts denied her petition for a restraining order against him.

At the time, the judge found “no cause” for arrest. Next month, Ruiz’s burnt body was found on the side of a road. Ocasio confessed to police that he killed Ruiz and burned her body.

Ocasio was charged with first-degree murder and destruction of evidence, but ultimately took his own life in prison.

“WE NEED TO DO MORE”

A new investigation is aimed to bring awareness to the Puerto Rican court’s failure to protect Ruiz and other women killed in gender-related violence.

Since last year, more than 81 women have become victims of femicide on the island, according to Observatorio de Equidad de Género, a civil rights coalition.

During a press conference, the presiding judge of Puerto Rico’s Supreme Court, Maite Oronoz, in Spanish, said the number of femicides is significant and unacceptable.

“We have to do more,” Oronoz said.

The task force that conducted the probe was responsible for examining the “judicial, administrative and operational processes related to cases of gender-based violence.” The Supreme Court established the task force in

Una nueva investigación se abrió con el objetivo de dar a conocer el hecho de que la

corte puertorriqueña no protegió a Ruiz y otras mujeres asesinadas por violencia de género.

Desde el año pasado, más de 81 mujeres fueron víctimas de feminicidio en la isla, según el Observatorio de Equidad de Género, una coalición de derechos civiles.

Durante una conferencia de prensa, la jueza presidente de la Corte Suprema de Puerto Rico, Maite Oronoz, en español, dijo que el número de feminicidios es significativo e inaceptable.

“Tenemos que hacer más”, dijo Oronoz.

El grupo de trabajo que realizó la investigación fue responsable de examinar los “procesos judiciales, administrativos y operativos relacionados con los casos de violencia de género”. La Corte Suprema estableció el grupo de trabajo en mayo después de que siete feminicidios convirtieran a abril en el mes más mortífero para las mujeres en lo que va de 2021.

Part of the 110-page report analyzed seven femicides in which courts got involved, including Ruiz’s case.

The report does not explicitly identify the victims by name, but instead by the circumstances surrounding their case.

While the report does not inspect specific judges, the task force reported that the judges involved in all seven cases did not perform well when it came to assessing the presence of “lethality indicators.”

Examples of lethality indicators that should be “red flags” in the women’s testimonies include: a previous history of

abuse, increased severity of abuse over a period of time, or accessibility to weapons.

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS

The report stated that stalking was the most common lethality indicator present in the testimonies of the victims or those petitioning for a protection order.

exico, just like many other countries in the world, has seen a recent surge of COVID-19 cases since the Delta variant made its mark earlier this year.

Recently, this week, Mexico broke a record with over 3 million COVID cases since the start of the pandemic, according to data reported by CNN. About as many people are dying from the virus as in the United States.

The reason is because a growing number of young adults and youth are hesitant to receive the vaccine due to ongoing conspiracy theories, fear of possible side effects, and misinformation spreading across various social media platforms.

That misinformation has even been spread by national figures, like Mexican Cardinal Juan Sandoval Iñiguez.

Many Mexico City residents still believe the theory he spouted.

YOUTH ARE SUSCEPTIBLE

“The (young) people have been more in contact and, for some reason, believe more and follow these groups more,” Laurie Ann Ximénez-Fyvie, investigator of the molecular genetics laboratory at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) told Reuters.

Ximénez-Fyvie also said that anti-vaccine organizations and groups are “extremely harmful” to residents of Mexico.

“In Mexico anti-vaxxers have had more influence on the younger age group,” she said.

One local from Mexico Reuters reported on, Eduardo Espinola, a local nutritionist who stated his reasoning for not wanting to receive the vaccine was because of, “certain side effects that it may have.”

So far, only 22.9% of Mexico’s population have received both doses of the vaccine.

Esa desinformación incluso fue difundida por figuras nacionales, como el cardenal mexicano Juan Sandoval Iñiguez,

hiladelphia is a city known for many things.

Whether it’s the distinction of being the birthplace of America, the first capital of the United States, or home to the nation’s first library, hospital and zoo, there is so much that can be associated with the City of Brotherly Love.

The most recent U.S. Census data shows that Philadelphia has seen a 5% population increase — a nearly 78,000 resident increase — from a decade ago, including a growing Hispanic community.

As the city celebrates more than 300 years of existence and sets the stage for

the next decade of prosperity, AL DÍA is taking the opportunity to showcase the diversity that is currently enriching the city more than ever.

On Aug. 27, that diversity will be on full display at the second annual AL DÍA 40 Under Forty event, which will once again be emceed by Loraine Ballard

Morrill, news and community affairs director at iHeartMedia.

When this event was first brought to life in 2020, the goal was to locate the diverse young professionals who are making a positive impact in their respective industries and in our region, but not given the proper and well-deserved recognition.

AL DÍA is taking the opportunity to showcase the diversity that is currently enriching the city more than ever.

As a media company, the responsibility is there for AL DÍA to do just that and provide a platform for these individuals through this event.

AN UPTICK IN NOMINEES

When the AL DÍA 40 Under Forty event first manifested from an idea into a full-pledged event with direction, vision and substance, we set out a mission to find those diverse young professionals.

Thanks to our nomination form and help from our loyal readers, we were able to do just that — and then some.

iladelfia es una ciudad conocida por muchas razones.

Ya sea por la distinción de ser el lugar de nacimiento de Estados Unidos, la primera capital de los Estados Unidos o el hogar de la primera biblioteca, hospital y zoológico de la nación, existen cantidad de motivos por los que la Ciudad del Amor Fraternal es conocida.

Los datos más recientes del censo de EE. UU. muestran que Filadelfia experimentó un aumento de población del 5%, un aumento de casi 78,000 residentes, desde hace una década, incluida una comunidad hispana en crecimiento.

A medida que la ciudad celebra sus más de 300 años de existencia y prepara el escenario para la próxima década de

prosperidad, AL DÍA quiere aprovechar la oportunidad para destacar la diversidad que enriquece a la ciudad hoy más que nunca.

The diversity in age, background, skills, race, ethnicity, experiences and industries underscored the level of diversity that makes the city what it is today.

The next step is shining a light on that diversity, and diving deeper into the individuals who make that diversity possible.

AN ESTEEMED JUDGING PANEL

After putting together an impressive lineup of judges to help with the selection process for the 40 honorees last year, the goal was to put together an even bigger judging committee this time around.

Each judge is diverse in

their own right, each with their own unique backgrounds and journeys into the positions they currently occupy. These judges represent an important voice, ensuring that diversity is imperative within the constructs of their industries.

They are all leaders who help drive the diversity, equity and inclusion in their organizations, and also in the city at-large.

For Nefertiti Sickout, she is directly in charge of that very effort for the City of Philadelphia.

In her words, her work is “focused on looking at how local government and institutions intentionally or inadvertently maintain racial disparities due to historical structures or systems that tend to repeat patterns of exclusion.”

The lack of promotion and implementation of diversity, equity and inclusion is deeply rooted in those structures,

are often maintained across generations, and takes a concerted and collaborative long-term effort to undo.

The 2021 AL DÍA 40 Under Forty event will serve, in part, to promote and elevate this generation of diverse, upand-coming young professionals.

Businesses across the city would be well-served embracing that concept in their hiring practices. Gregory DeShields expressed such.

He described embracing diversity, equity and inclusion as a “key business fundamental leading to a competitive edge and business success while also building work environments that will welcome and include the best of all employees.”

As it pertains to the look ahead to the future of the Philadelphia workforce, this generation of up-and-coming professionals are key, as they are likely to see both ends of the spectrum — the status quo and the ever changing landscape.

“40 Under Forty leaders will be required to balance a diverse generational workforce embracing traditional work styles and embracing evolving styles and work expectations,” said DeShields.

When the judges took on the task of selecting the 40 honorees of this year’s event, ensuring that diversity remained a frontward concept was paramount. This was proven given the level

of diversity that can be seen by the honorees.

“This event, in addition to celebrating the commitment, work and efforts of the awardees, also creates more community,” said Sickout. “In terms of establishing a network of people who can become more aligned and in a better position to collaborate and intentionally advance diversity, equity and inclusion for the improvement of Philadelphia and our larger society.”

Philadelphia is diverse in so many ways, and it was important to reflect that in the selections.

“Representation is critical to foster a culture of inclusivity — it gives light and life to people often stuck in the shadows,” said David Davis. “It says, ‘we see you.’”

These honorees will not only be seen, but also heard.

The 10 judges all understood the mission, and took the lead in making the final selection of the 40 honorees.

A KEYNOTE FOR THE AGES

When you hear the story of keynote speaker Sandra Campos, you hear a story of drive, hard work and determination.

Campos is a first-generation Mexican-American, California-born Texan.

As one of six children born to Mex-

I had grown up with entrepreneurial parents, so business was something that I always had in me Sandra Campos ican parents who arrived in the United States in search of a better life, Campos saw firsthand the value of working hard.

Her father worked a number of jobs, from hotel jobs to milk delivery, until he found the entrepreneurial spirit that so many immigrants share — and he began working at his uncle’s tortilla factory in El Paso, learning all he could about the business.

After a few years, he moved his family to Dallas and started his own tortilla business there.

“I think that there’s just a spirit of working and building something for yourself that I have seen within this culture that’s so prevalent,” said Campos.

That spirit would soon explain her own career path as a professional in the fashion industry, which has now spanned over two decades, working at a number of brands, such as Juicy Couture, Bebe, and BCBG. “I had grown up with entrepreneurial parents, so business was something that I always had in me,” Campos noted. “I was

always a leader in a leadership position.”

“I wanted to become a CEO, I knew that really early on,” she added.

In 2018, she became the first woman and Latina CEO at Diane von Furstenburg.

“It was important to me that I became a leader within a fashion retail company that wasn’t just a name on a label,” said Campos, “but actually had a real purpose and meaning.”

Since leaving the role, Campos has since followed her entrepreneurial dream, founding Fashion Launchpad, a premium subscription platform that offers on-demand education for retail and fashion professionals in June 2020. A few months later, she was named CEO of Project Verte.

Campos credits her career success to three main factors: hard work, persistence and healthy curiosity.

For the next generation of professionals and industry leaders, Campos noted three key pieces of advice.

“Networking is at the top of the list,” she said.

The second is being open to thinking outside the box, and the third is understanding that career success is a roller coaster ride.

“It’s a marathon. It’s not a sprint,” said Campos. “So really defining that path and understanding that there will be really rough days and really great days… and not letting ‘no’ get you down, and stop you from what your goals are, that is going to save you.”

“It certainly saved me.”

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

As the honorees, AL DÍA staff, and dozens of other guests fill the Barnes Foundation on Aug. 27, one thing will be certain.

The 2021 AL DÍA 40 Under Forty will be a celebration of both the present and future of the City of Brotherly Love.

The city — and overall country — is just going to become more increasingly diverse, as the most recent Census data entails.

That reality just makes it more important for individuals and organizations to embrace that diversity, increase equity and inclusion, and watch positive growth take place as a result.

El evento 2021 AL DÍA 40 Under Forty servirá, en parte, para promover y elevar a esta generación de jóvenes profesionales diversos y prometedores.

Las empresas de toda la ciudad estarían mejor atendidas si adoptaran ese concepto en sus prácticas de contratación.

Gregory DeShields lo expresó de esta forma al describir el hecho de abrazar la diversidad, la equidad y la inclusión como un “negocio clave fundamental que conduce a una ventaja competitiva y al éxito empresarial, al mismo tiempo que crea entornos de trabajo que acogerán e incluirán lo mejor de todos los empleados”.

En lo que respecta a la mirada hacia el futuro de la fuerza laboral de Filadelfia, esta generación de profesionales prometedores es clave, ya que es probable que vean ambos extremos del espectro: el status quo y el panorama en constante cambio.

Filadelfia es diversa de muchas maneras, y era importante que eso quedase reflejado a la hora de elegir a los nominados.

“La representación es fundamental para fomentar una cultura de inclusión: da luz y vida a las personas a menudo atrapadas en las sombras”, dijo David Davis. “Nos está diciendo: ‘le vemos’”.

Estos homenajeados no solo serán vistos, sino también escuchados.

Los 10 jueces entendieron la misión y tomaron la iniciativa a la hora de hacer la selección final de los 40 homenajeados.

Cuando uno escucha la historia de la oradora principal, Sandra Campos, escucha una historia de impulso, trabajo duro y determinación.

Campos es una texana nacida en California, mexicano-estadounidense de primera generación.

Como uno de los seis hijos de padres mexicanos que llegaron a los Estados Unidos en busca de una vida mejor, Campos vio de primera mano el valor de trabajar duro.

Su padre tuvo varios trabajos, de empleos en hoteles a repartidor de leche, hasta que encontró el espíritu emprendedor que comparten tantos inmigrantes, y comenzó a trabajar en la fábrica de tortillas de su tío en El Paso, aprendiendo todo lo que pudo sobre el negocio.

Después de unos años, se mudó con su familia a Dallas y comenzó su propio negocio de tortillas allí.

“Creo que hay un espíritu de trabajo y construcción de uno mismo que prevalece dentro de esta cultura”, dijo Campos.

Ese espíritu pronto explicaría su propia trayectoria como profesional en la industria de la moda, donde ya lleva más de dos décadas, trabajando en varias marcas, como Juicy Couture, Bebe y BCBG. “Crecí con padres emprendedores, así que hacer negocios fue algo que siempre tuve en mí”, señaló Campos. “Siempre fui una líder en una posición de liderazgo”.

“Quería ser CEO, lo supe muy pronto”, añadió.

En 2018, se convirtió en la primera mujer y directora latina de Diane von Furstenburg.

“Para mí era importante convertirme en líder dentro de una marca de moda minorista que

no fuera solo un nombre en una etiqueta”, dijo Campos, “sino que tuviera un propósito y un significado reales”.

Desde que dejó el cargo, Campos siguió su sueño empresarial, fundando Fashion Launchpad, una plataforma de suscripción premium que ofrece educación a medida para profesionales de la moda y el comercio minorista, operativa desde junio de 2020. Unos meses más tarde, fue nombrada CEO de Project Verte.

Campos atribuye el éxito de su carrera a tres factores principales: trabajo duro, perseverancia y una sana curiosidad.

Para la próxima generación de profesionales y líderes de la industria, Campos dio tres consejos clave.

ntil two months ago, Brazil’s Minister of the Environment was Ricardo Salles, accused of participating in illegal trafficking of timber to the United States. He is an example of what the position of President Jair Bolsonaro has meant for Brazil, for the Amazon and for the health of the planet.

His actions against the preservation of the jungle and the rejection of the requests of the indigenous communities for the delimitation of their territories are at the other end of those who are mobilizing to establish measures that counteract environmental deterioration.

The center of the discussion is the Amazon rainforest, the lung of the world and the source of an incalculable wealth of biodiversity. Everyone knows that, but Bolsonaro, who assumed power on January 1, 2019, and his followers have done everything to ignore him. The deforestation figures show it: The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) of Brazil revealed that in 2019 illegal deforestation increased 88% compared to 2018. Bolsonaro’s response was to question the figure and cut the budget of institutions responsible for environmental control. A few weeks ago, Inpe published a worrying figure: 1,062 square kilometers were deforested in June, as never since 2015 when this measurement began. And in the first semester they added 3,609 kilometers, in a race without brakes.

Another recent report also indicates that the Brazilian Amazon now emits more carbon than it absorbs, which has a serious impact on the climate, with the region’s temperature expected to rise by 2 degrees Celsius, when international agreements establish a maximum of 1.5 degrees.

The government’s actions have been limited to investing a fortune in military deployment in areas that are being devastated by deforestation with no positive results in sight. In addition, it reduced the budget of the Ministry of the Environment by 30 percent, contrary to Bolsonaro’s international promises to strengthen the sector and with illegal logging by 2030.

In contrast, while the president mocks the commitments to the health of the planet, regional governments and businessmen make agreements and advance programs to counteract what is done by the federal government.

Bolsonaro has 16 months left in the Presidency.

The hope is that whoever replaces him will resume the priority of the fight against climate change and all that that implies for the health of the planet.

In two and a half years, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has made decisions that significantly affect conditions in the Amazon region. Deforestation has reached historic levels, while the budget for environmental programs has been significantly reduced.

Hace pocas semanas, el Inpe hizo pública una cifra preocupante: en junio se deforestaron 1.062 kilómetros cuadrados, como nunca desde 2015 cuando se empezó a realizar esta medición. Y en el primer semestre sumaron 3.609 kilómetros, en una carrera sin freno.

Otro informe reciente también señala que ahora la Amazonía brasileña emite más carbono del que absorbe, lo que impacta seriamente el clima, previéndose que la temperatura de la región aumente 2 grados centígrados, cuando los acuerdos internacionales establecen como máximo 1,5.

Las acciones del Gobierno se han limitado a invertir una fortuna en despliegue militar en las zonas que están siendo arrasadas por la deforestación sin ningún resultado positivo a la vista. Además, redujo en 30 por ciento el presupuesto del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, en contravía de las promesas internacionales de Bolsonaro de fortalecer el sector y con la tala ilegal de árboles para el 2030.

En contraste, mientras el presidente se burla de los compromisos con la salud del planeta, gobernantes regionales y empresarios hacen acuerdos y avanzan en programas para contrarrestar lo que se hace desde el gobierno federal.

A Bolsonaro le quedan 16 meses en la Presidencia.

fter months of refusing to make public the details of negotiations with ICE to county residents, the County Commissioners announced yesterday that they plan to vote on converting the facility into a prison for immigrant women tomorrow, Thursday, August 19th, 2021. Berks community members stand firm in their demands for the commissioners to vote “no” to the use of the facility as an immigrant prison, and instead convert the facility to deliver health and human services to those who call Berks County their home.

In late February of this year, all families detained at the Berks County Family Prison were released to their relatives or sponsors. Simultaneously as families were being released, the Berks County Commissioners-- specifically Christian Leinbach and Michael Rivera-- began communications with ICE to convert the use of the facility into an immigrant women’s prison.

“As residents of Berks County, we are outraged by the conduct of our Commissioners...”, said Juana Mora, an organizer with Make the Road Pennsylvania and a Reading community member. “...They are making decisions that negatively affect our community, by bringing a prison for immigrant women to our backyard. This prison will only impoverish our community and will take away our peace. As a woman, I cannot allow immigrant women who come escaping from violence and poverty and who come here to improve their quality of life, to be incarcerated in my backyard.”

lthough the Cultural Center of Spain in Tegucigalpa (CCET) has continued to work virtually during the months of quarantine with different activities on cinema, arts and conferences.

After 17 months closed to the public and to face-to-face activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CCET reopened its doors on Tuesday, Aug. 17 and celebrated with the Living Cultures of Honduras Exhibition.

CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE

The exhibition is part of the activities celebrating the bicentennial of Honduras’ independence from Spain.

The CCET, in coordination with the National Directorate of Indigenous and Afro-Honduran Peoples; the General Subdirectorate of Education for Indigenous and Afro-Honduran Peoples and the Research Group of Indigenous Languages of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (Unah), is in charge of the exhibition.

state of the art memorial will soon be unveiled to commemorate the 49 lives lost at the Pulse NightClub in Orlando, Florida on June 12, 2016. Most of the victims of the mass shooting were Latinx.

The project will be developed in San Francisco’s Castro Cultural LGBTQ district and will be completed in a few weeks according to the San Francisco Bay Times.

IN MEMORY

The idea was initially developed in June 2017, as the San Francisco Board of Supervisors raised over $10,000 to assist in the creation of the project.

They raised enough money, but

City officials say the memorial will be there to honor those who died during the tragedy, and to spark a conversation with visitors about homophobia and gun violence.

The Pulse NightClub massacre was the largest LGBTQ+ shooting in U.S. history. It was also the largest mass shooting in the U.S. up until the Las Vegas mass shooting that took the lives of 58 innocent people.

TAKING STEPS TO PROTECT

Since 2016, it has spurred Congress to pass laws to permanently protect the civil rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

In June 2021, on the fifth anniversary of the shooting, President Joe Biden signed into law a bill that would see Pulse NightClub recognized as a National Memorial.

“Just over five years ago, the Pulse nightclub, a place of acceptance and joy, became a place of unspeakable pain and loss,” Biden was quoted in People Magazine.

The president has also pressed for full rights for LGBTQ+ Americans, including passage of the Equality Act in Congress. The bill prohibits discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identities surrounding the workplace, housing, and education.

The tragedy occurred just before 2 a.m. on June 12, 2016, as the nightclub was hosting a “Latin Night,” and Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old, began shooting into the crowd.

Mateen, armed with an automatic assault weapon, was shot and killed by police after a three-hour standoff.

The shooting is an event that no American will be able to forget and many are still grieving.

The organization is hoping the memorial will be ready just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, running from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. z

s Hurricane Grace hops between land in Mexico, the Northeast of the U.S. has now seen its biggest storm in almost a decade in tropical storm Henri.

While downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane before making landfall in Westerly, Rhode Island, Henri still brought record rains to the East Coast, knocked out power to thousands and canceled flights for thousands more.

Scenes on Sunday, Aug. 22, brought back dark memories of 2012, when Hurricane Sandy hit the region, killing 233 people and inflicting $70 billion in damages.

Henri isn’t as powerful, but the climate change that created him could mean more storms like him in the future. z

So far in 2021, there have been 329 victims of gun violence, which is a 26% increase from last year, according to data from the City Controller’s Office.

Some believe the surge in gun violence has to do with the COVID-19 pandemic, however, others believe it is due to the fact that access to guns are extremely accessible in the city.

Not only is gun violence very common in the city, children have been vic-

In early July, a 10-year-old girl was shot and killed as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This was not the first incident where a child accidentally shot themselves.

While these tragedies are reckless and frustrating, they are also preventable.

Johnson hopes to see less lives being lost in the city where he grew up in.

Although he is working endlessly to bring attention to gun violence, he hopes major Kenney will finally do something about gun violence. z

Just last Monday, the White House announced it will send Mexico 8.5 million more doses of COVID-19 vaccines as the Delta variant continues to make its way through North America.

U.S. government officials say the United States will send more doses of AstraZeneca and Moderna.

approved in the United States, even though the company has distributed millions of its vaccines to countries outside of the states. Moderna has not yet been approved by Mexico.

In June, the U.S. government sent Mexico more than 1.3 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine while cases that month were decreasing.

Although there is a spike in COVID-19 cases in Mexico, officials have yet to ban travel in and out of the country. The CDC requires travelers to provide a negative COVID-19 test prior to air travel on their way back to the United States. z

We can’t close our eyes to this unspeakable truth.

It can hurt the next time we open them, as the Platonic truth is supposed to hurt the eyes of our ignorance, comfortably accustomed to the Dark Cave and prone to remain in the Dark Ages.

The quicker we acknowledge the new reality, the faster America will progress in its economy, to the point the one billion citizens of China and India, and their extraordinary capacity to produce and replicate, won’t be game for the newly-found American ingenuity of the new century.

Perhaps, we won’t need to build new bombardiers or smart weapons because of plain genius operating in a free-enterprise system, with clear rules of engagement open to anybody, will be enough to produce the new wave of innovation and wealth.
