hance changed Damaris Alvarado-Rodriguez´ life. She started taking care of a baby by coincidence, by the following month the number had gone up to six. What started in a home in Philadelphia eventually moved to a nearby commercial space. At first, it was called Cookie’s Daycare Center. Today, it is Children’s Playhouse, with 278 children that she takes care of and attends to in Newbold and Whitman, in South Philadelphia. It was the first inclusive daycare in South Philadelphia, with children from Hispanic, Asian Black and white families. Also from migrant families that do not speak Spanish and with different incomes and nationalities. Her services include infant and toddler care, pre-K, after school care, and summer camps for children up to 12 years old. She had to go through a journey of management and effort to get to today’s results, and even faced the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic. More details on this story in the article of this issue.

We also remember the Spanish history of Florida, the first European settlement in North America. It has been a part of the United States for 200 years after the Spanish Crown transferred it. This territory set some milestones like being the first state where interracial marriages were legal. The first one was documented in 1565, two centuries and two years before being accepted in the United States. Today, 22,5% of the population in Florida identifies itself as Hispanic. In cities like Miami, it is 70%. Also in this issue, Dr. William Hite, who will soon step down as superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia to be the CEO of KnowledgeWorks, a nonprofit organization that prepares graduates to take the next step. He will talk on his new role as of July 1. z

Signed by 14 of the 17 members of City Council, it called for a “fully resourced, independent police oversight, including authority to conduct contemporaneous, independent review of civilian complaints and use-of-force incidents.”
A BOARD WITH POWER
The city’s pre-existing oversight board was established in 1993, but it had a low budget and no real subpoena power. Philly residents voted to eliminate the old board in favor of something new via ballot question in November 2020. In May 2021, Council passed the bill that could create it. The new board has the ability to initiate its own investigations, with or without a formal complaint, while the old board could only forward complaints to police. It will also have a voice in what charges are brought against officers if investigations reach that point, rather than leaving those decisions solely to the department itself. Police leadership must now consult directly with the board about disciplinary actions. If the police commissioner wants to take different actions than what the board recommended, they must be explained in writing. Additionally, if the department drops charges or enters a guilty plea in a misconduct case, it also must explain why in writing, and the board can object.

President Joe Biden delivered the most dire news so far of the military standoff that’s captured world headlines for most of 2022 between Russia and Ukraine. He said in a press conference that U.S. intelligence learned that Russian President Vladimir Putin had made the decision to invade Ukraine, and it would happen in the coming days or weeks. “We believe that they will target Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, a city of 2.8 million innocent people,” Biden added.
SELF DEFENSE?
“They will be here as long as necessary,” Lukashenko was quoted as saying in the New York Times. Since at least December 2021, Russian troops have amassed on the country’s border with Ukraine. The latest figures from Feb. 10, 2022, reported that anywhere between 130,000 to 190,000 troops are gathered with all the makings of an invasion force that includes tanks, artillery and other anti-aircraft weaponry. Amid the rise in tensions, Putin has sought to justify the army’s presence as a response to the encroachment of NATO forces on Russian soil in Eastern Europe. That point and requests to remove those forces have also come up in subsequent dialogues between Putin and other leaders (including Biden) in an effort to deescalate the situation. “For us, this is task No. 1,” Putin said. “It is a priority for our country to assure its security and conditions for its development.” The other motivation for a potential invasion is to keep Ukraine under its

As part of past negotiations was also a clause that cut Ukraine out of ever joining the European Union. Instead of falling in line with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made efforts to join the EU during his tenure, which started in 2019.
A UNITED FRONT
In response to an invasion, which would likely be the bloodiest in Europe since World War II, Biden and European partners have promised the harshest economic sanctions to date, which includes a cutoff of all technology imports. International condemnation will also follow. When responding to Biden’s most recent intelligence report of an imminent invasion, Putin countered by saying he is still willing to sit down and come to a diplomatic solution to the standoff. A future meeting is scheduled for this Thursday, Feb. 24 between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. However, Blinken has said the meeting will be called off in the event of an invasion, which would show that Russia’s plan all along was not in the interest of diplomacy. Should Blinken and Lavrov meet, a summit will then be scheduled with Biden and Putin, again, should Russia not invade Ukraine. Up to this point, Biden and Putin have corresponded only via phone call. During the last reported one, no real progress was made, and mostly consisted of Biden reiterating his threats of sanctions and more should Russia invade its neighbor. In the past, Putin has used subtle means to snatch control and influence in Ukraine — jumping on Pro-Russian sentiment in Crimea to annex the territory in 2014, and using the same sentiment among people in Donbas and Luhansk to wage a proxy civil war for the last eight years. This time around, the approach has seemingly thrown subtlety out the window. z

n Damaris Alvarado-Rodriguez’s own words, she literally “bumped into” her career in childcare. It came on a day she met her daughter’s school counselor while doing work in her South Philly community. The counselor, usually on hand to deal with children’s crises, was going through one of her own with a newborn infant. She had no one to take care of the child as she returned to work. “She was in tears,” Alvarado-Rodriguez remembered in a recent conversation with AL DÍA. Recently laid off from her own work, Alvarado-Rodriguez offered to take the woman’s child into her own home given the new free time she would have. “I took the baby, her name was Abigail, and I just fell in love with the child because she was just so beautiful,” said Alvarado-Rodriguez.

In her own words, Alvarado-Rodriguez was “an angry little child.” “I was a very lost teenage child and went through a lot of trauma and emotional stages of my life as a teenager,” she said. She called her home life “unstable.” After her mom and dad divorced, her mom became the primary caretaker for Damaris and her three brothers. Looking back now, Alvarado-Rodriguez knows her mom was doing the best she could, but also remembers bouncing around a lot as her mom found new living situations or Damaris herself was kicked out of schools. For a time, her and her brothers were also put into the foster care system. “I remember being in that situation and feeling helpless, feeling angry,” said Alvarado-Rodriguez.
NOT JUST A BABYSITTER
Not long after her act of kindness, rumors began to spread around the community of her childcare capabilities and one kid turned into six over the course of a month, all from mothers in similar situations to her daughter’s counselor. At that point, Alvarado-Rodriguez knew she had a choice to make — stop taking in kids, or take care of them, but do it right. She chose the latter and went back to school at Chestnut Hill College, where she later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a concentration in childcare management. “I never wanted my children to see me as a babysitter,” said Alvarado-Rodriguez. “So it was really important for me for that presentation.” With the degree in tow, her entrepreneurial journey was set for takeoff.
FINDING MORE TO LIFE
What changed was the emergence of a school counselor who became a figure in her life. She showed a young Damaris that there was more to her life than her then-current circumstances.
COOKIE’S DAYCARE CENTER
It started as it had before she got the degree, taking kids into her own home as a business plan. However, at the end of her block, a commercial space eventually opened up as the tenants moved out. Before they left completely, they stopped by Alvarado-Rodriguez’s house and recommended she move her childcare business there, also giving her their former landlord’s number. “I said: ‘I want my house back.’ It just became overwhelming. I was handling families and kids all the time, there was no separation,” said Alvarado-Rodriguez. The move happened shortly after and Cookie’s Daycare Center was born. Cookie was a nickname given to Alvarado-Rodriguez before she moved to Philly, and was an homage to her home of New York City. “I wanted a little bit of myself, a little bit of Brooklyn with me,” she said.

PORTADA “No matter how angry I was, and how mean I tried to be with her, she never gave up,” said Alvarado-Rodriguez. “I wanted to be that person that a child would reflect back on saying: ‘You know, it’s not that bad. I could be in a bad situation, but I can make it better.’” It started for Alvarado-Rodriguez with her own children, supporting and being involved in as many activities as she could with them. When it wasn’t dancing, it was gymnastics, and when her oldest daughter got into softball, Alvarado-Rodriguez learned the game and became a coach. She wanted to have the same impact and be the same support with every child that walked through the doors of Cookie’ Daycare Center. “I want all children to know that no matter what their struggles are during their childhood, dealing with these challenges makes the children stronger as they grow up. They learn to empower themselves to make better decisions in their adult lives and have more tools as leaders to make the changes that this world so desperately needs,” said Alvarado-Rodriguez.
FROM COOKIE’S TO CHILDREN’S PLAYHOUSE
A firm believer in slow and steady wins the race in business, her daycare center began with 12 kids transferred over from her at-home setup. She was also one of the few Hispanic women in business in South Philly when Cookie’s first opened. Over time, the daycare center expanded three times to accommodate more children, and also earned a fourstar Keystone STAR rating, which is the highest an early learning center can earn in Pennsylvania. Cookie’s was the first to get the distinction in Alvarado-Rodriguez’s neighborhood. She also said it was the first all-inclusive daycare of its kind in South Philly, taking in children from families that spanned the community’s growing Hispanic and Asian populations along with those from the longstanding Black and white ones. But as Cookie’s continued to grow, it became obvious to Alvarado-Rodriguez that she needed to find a new home for her business. For that, she went through the William Penn Foundation to get a Reinvestment Fund grant and open a new, bigger space still in South Philly. FEBRUARY 23 - MARCH 2, 2022
With the move, the Cookie’s name was also retired and Children’s Playhouse was born in 2005. Seventeen years later, Alvarado-Rodriguez’s original 12 kids at Cookie’s have exploded to 278, and the number keeps growing every year. There are also now two Children’s Playhouse locations in Newbold and Whitman in South Philly. “It has been an amazing experience to see Children’s Playhouse growing. Every year, we just add more and more to the program,” she said. A key to that growth is Alvarado-Rodriguez’s holistic efforts to connect the center with its surrounding community. “I always wanted to have a childcare center feel more like a community based center,” she said. “Let’s help communities grow.” Those serviced by Children’s Playhouse include immigrant families, those that don’t speak English, and of all different income levels and nationalities. The services provided include infant and toddler care, pre-K, after school care and Summer camp for kids up to 12 years old.
son and doing what it does best in molding young children to respect and support each other and their communities. “The first day that the kids were allowed back into the building, and I started hearing those echoes in the hallway. [It] made me cry, because that’s where the magic happens,” said Alvarado-Rodriguez. “When the kids are laughing, even when they’re crying and another friend goes over to console them. You can’t do that really on Zoom right, you can’t catch those magical moments.” As for the future, Alvarado-Rodriguez is sticking to her tried and true practice of slow and steady. She said she’s had offers to bring her model of early child-
hood care to North and West Philly and wants to, but it has to be the right time. As part of creating the centers, she learns the communities they will serve long before any ground is broken or plans are drawn. With COVID still lingering, that community connection is harder than ever. “That’s the vision,” said Alvarado Rodriguez. “So that children can feel safe and their families can feel safe and comfortable, and take a deep breath when they drop off their children.” Despite the current difficulties, in five years time, she hopes to bring that sense of relief to families in another community in Philly. z
They learn to empower themselves to make better decisions in their adult lives and have more tools as leaders to make the changes that this world so desperately needs.
IT’S ABOUT THE COMMUNITY TOO
The holistic approach took on a new meaning amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which Alvarado-Rodriguez said was her “worst traumatic experience.” “The last two years has been an emotional roller coaster,” she said. In addition to shifting Children’s Playhouse to virtual, she also began using her space as a place families could go to get their food for the week. She still remembers the lines wrapped around the block on the first day she opened her doors. “I’m gonna do it this one time,” was her initial thought. “And then all of a sudden I’m like, I can’t do this once because then how are they gonna eat?” Soon after, it became weekly for Children’s Playhouse to open and provide food for families in the community. As the pandemic ebbed and flowed, diapers and baby formula were added to the mix and a number of coat drives were organized in the Winter months.
FUTURE EXPANSION?

No había separación”, señaló.

¿EXPANSIÓN A FUTURO?
In the future, Alvarado-Rodriguez hopes to expand Children’s Playhouse once again to other parts of Philadelphia.

very four years, athletes from around the world gather for the Winter Olympics, where snow and ice are the setting to compete and represent their countries. Those nations with ideal climate conditions and facilities to train for these sports are the superpowers. However, nations with less tradition in these sports, also dream of winning medals. A prime example of this is Latin America. Many think they should not compete under the idea that if you haven’t won, you shouldn’t try, or if you don’t live in a certain country, you shouldn’t represent it. That being said, there are many Latinos that have won their place through official qualifications in what are often lonely efforts. That is the case of Mexico’s Donovan Carrillo, who made history just by setting foot in Beijing. He is the first athlete in more than 30 years to represent Mexico in ice skating, and his performance showed the whole world that with dedication and discipline, anything is possible. Carrillo is the first Latin American to qualify for the long program in ice skating at the Olympic Games, and the only Mexican in history to make it to the Winter Olympic finals. While he didn’t medal, Carrillo did make a great impression on fans with his score of 138.44. Experts now expect to see him again in 2026. Donovan is only 22 years old and unlike his opponents, he does not train at an exclusive training complex with everything necessary to compete professionally. Instead, he trained at an ice rink in a mall, more than 124 miles away from his home in Guadalajara. “Dreams come true,” the skater said after his historic performance to the rhythm of “Black Magic Woman” and “Shake it,” by Carlos Santana. With it, Carrillo achieved the highest score of his career at 79.69, which was enough to earn a spot in the individual male finals. He also demonstrated that even though Latin Americans are still novices at the Winter Olympics, talent and skills are in abundance across the region. Investment is the key to tap into that pool.

ENGLISH Apart from Carrillo, 11 Latin American delegations took a total of 38 athletes to Beijing. None are favorites to medal, but they all hope to set personal bests and inspire others in their countries to reach for the world stage. There are also a number of nationalized Europeans and Americans of Latino origin and children of Latinos living in other countries participating. In Beijing, the U.S. set the record of 14 nations among its delegation, breaking the previous record of 13 from four years ago in PyeongChang. The participation of Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador two years running is also of note. Beyond Carrillo repping Latin America is Chile’s Yonathan Fernández, who is participating for a third consecutive Winter Olympics and is a pioneer in representing his country in cross-country skiing. Sarah Escobar is also the first woman from Ecuador to attend any Winter Olympics in giant slalom. The countries with most participants from Latin America in Beijing are Brazil with 10, Argentina, with six, Chile and México with four, and Colombia with three. Another Latino, in this case the Colombian Carlos Quintana, was the protagonist of one of the most emotional moments of Beijing 2022, one of those moments that remind us that in sport, and especially in the Olympic Games, winning is not the goal. Quintana, who was competing in the 15-kilometer cross-country skiing event, managed to crown his dream of finishing, something that was recognized by the gold medal winner, Ilvo Niskanen of Finland, who surprised the Colombian at the finish line to congratulate him. That is what the sporting spirit of the Olympic Games is all about.z

00 years ago Florida became part of the United States, after the Spanish Crown transferred it. San Agustin, founded in 1565, is the oldest city of the state and every year it celebrates its annexation wearing the colors of the Spanish and American flags. On July 10 of 1821, Florida changed its Spanish flag for the United States one. In the last celebration of this day, the Spanish ambassador regretted that “the Spanish legacy is not sufficiently known in this country.” Under the Spanish mandate, for example, slavery was abolished while it remained in place in the northern British colonies, from which many people fled. Florida was the first important European settlement in North America and at the beginning it occupied a much wider area than it does now. It was then known as “La Florida.” Conquistador Ponce de Leon was accompanied by two Africans who had been slaves and who were involved in the expedition. One of them, Juan Garrido, would come later to Mexico with Hernan Cortes.
SLAVERY IN SPANISH TERRITORY
In “The New History of Florida”, by Jane Landers, the historian explains how; even though in some Spanish colonies slavery still existed, the law guaranteed to slaves “certain rights and protection that did not exist in other slave systems.” That is, they could escape from a “cruel master” for “personal safety,” or have and sell property. While the United States kept interracial marriages as illegal until 1967, in La Florida they were permitted. The first wedding was documented in 1565 between a white man and a black woman. The situation of African Americans there was not ideal, but it was better than in other places; many people escaped in

ENGLISH canoes to get to any point of the peninsula and find refuge. Florida received so many refugees that in 1693, King Carlos II had to issue a decree whereby something that was already a fact was legalized. All slaves, men and women that came over escaping the British colonies would obtain their freedom. Of course, only if the converted to Christianity.
HISPANIC HERITAGE
Although the United States was founded in 1776, two thirds of the current territory continued to be part of the Spanish empire. Between 1810 and 1825 most colonies of the Spanish empire became independent, except for Cuba and Puerto Rico which stayed under the pow-
er of the metropolis until the end of the century. Florida was Spanish since 1513. Between 1763 and 1783 it was controlled by the British and until this day, Saint Andrew’s Cross remains in its flag. It was sold for five million dollars that Spain never actually charged. Its population emigrated to Cuba, its culture, though, is very much a part of the present Florida. In Florida, 22,5% of the population identifies itself as Hispanic, in cities like Miami this percentage goes up to 70%. The United States history has been narrated from the Anglo-Saxon point of view, but in recent years seeing the country from a Hispanic perspective is being vindicated. z

ENGLISH children but also for generations of family members who may live under the same roof or nearby. “The Hispanic culture is one that heavily emphasizes family and togetherness. Women are the backbone of this structure; they are often called upon to be caregivers for spouses, children, siblings and parents,” Maribel Hernández, MD, an cardiologist at Lankenau Heart Institute and medical director of the Women’s Heart Initiative, said in a recent article published by Main Line Health. This dynamic has resulted in many women prioritizing the needs of others to the point they lose sight of their own health and wellbeing. In addition, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, Hispanic women are about 20% more likely to be overweight as compared to non-Hispanic white women. Among Hispanic American women, 78.8% are overweight or obese, as compared to 64% of non-Hispanic white women. Obesity can lead to higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, and hypertension, all of which are common risk factors for heart disease. A third contributor is the difficulty of managing weight without easy access to nutritious food. Due to some socioeconomic factors, many Hispanics live in “food deserts,” which add another layer of difficulty towards heart disease prevention. “Women in Hispanic communities often do not have the same access to comprehensive, affordable care that non-Hispanic women do,” said Dr. Hernández. “Many Hispanic women are uninsured, do not have an established relationship with a primary care physician or a hospital or health center nearby that offers providers who speak Spanish or offer adequate translation services.”
All of these factors can affect a woman’s willingness to seek routine health care or emergency care. Dr. Hernández suggests that education is the first step to managing heart disease risk. “Only one-third of Hispanic women know that heart disease is their greatest risk,” she said. “The more we know about our cultural and personal risk factors, the better equipped we will be to manage these risks.” It’s important to schedule regular checkups to discuss your family history and how to proactively manage heart disease risk, including knowing key heart health numbers like blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, triglycerides, and body weight.

ESCALADE IN UKRAINE’S CONFRONTATION
“Putin’s risk assessment until now has allowed him to take the lead, but there are too many risks in keeping on taking things too far,” says its editorial of Feb. 19 about the crisis provoked by Ukraine between Russia and NATO and the United States. “Joe Biden’s statement about how Vladimir Putin has opted for a war with Ukraine is one more step into the escalade of a crisis that has not been directed towards avoiding the worst,” indicates the Spanish newspaper. One of its conclusions is that “a tempestuous horizon is on sight for Europe should Biden’s forecast be accurate in that, in days or weeks, Russia could start an attack against Kiev as main target. Not only for the immediate effects on site and on the markets, but also for a confrontation space that resembles the Cold War.”
HONDURAS AT A CROSSROADS
The editorial of the Costa Rican newspaper is referring to the capture of Honduran former president Juan Orlando Hernandez, after an extradition request by the United States’ justice. “With it, the strength of institutions in the country is being put to the test, in particular, the real division of powers, so deteriorated and exploited to favor influential political sectors and interested parties,” it points out. It also says that “the extradition request by the United States (…) cannot be taken as proof of guilt for the three charges for which he should appear before a federal court in Manhattan, all of them on conspiracy to help bring drugs into his territory. However, had there not been an array of evidence that sustained such request, it would have hardly ever been one.” It advices about the risks for the legal authorities in Honduras: “they should act with complete independence from pressure that could distort their actions, and reject the tricks that Hernandez and his lawyers could use to grant him immunity.”
‘AVOCADO: BACK TO NORMAL’
The editorial from Jan. 19 refers to avocado exports being reactivated from Michoacan after being suspended by the United States with “a phone threat and denial to approve a shipment” by an inspector. It then explains the importance of this crop for Mexican economy: “exports for 1.1 million tons and 3,085 million dollars in 2021, it is the third agribusiness in Mexico that sells the most to the world, after beer and tequila.” He reminds that Michoacan contributes 76% of Mexican production. “Relevance of avocado is dramatic: in 2020 it was estimated that it generated 310 thousand direct Jobs and 78 thousand indirect jobs (…), and represents more than half of its value in the primary sector. (…) The United States has an irreplaceable role in trading the fruit, as it is in that market where 85 percent of Michoacan’s production is sold for, in 2021, 2,557 million dollars.”
MISTRUST FROM NATO AND UNITED STATES
The columnist Antonio Albinana wrote on Feb. 19 about the situation in Ukraine and what it means to the world. “The only thing clear at this point — he says — is that each protagonist of this situation is seeking to build and sale a narrative, even if it has little to do with reality and the future of the Ukrainian crisis. We should not forget what the star analyst of ‘Financial Times’, Gideon Rachman, points out, the battle of public opinion is crucial: ‘In the West, public opinion has never been so negative to its political leaders (…), it mostly mistrusts its governments. That is where the war of influence over Ukraine comes from, and the intensive informative sessions by Biden to try to control the narrative, announcing every day that a Russian invasion to Ukraine is going to happen any moment (…)’. In the end, instead of accumulating war materials in the Russia-Ukraine border, the only sensible solution is to direct things through diplomatic channels.”

imultaneous to diplomatic efforts to avoid a war between Russian and NATO and the United States for Ukraine, the citizens of the countries involved have expressed their concern about what may happen. On the Ukrainian side, it is clear that if Russians invade, thousands of people will die and many more will run away, leaving a deep impact on the economy. This could be the biggest military offensive in Europe after the Second World War. On Feb. 19, at the Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan, a group of protesters; human rights supporters, ecologists and anti-war people, demonstrated against the possibility of an armed confrontation and asked for a negotiated resolution. The United Nations has agreed on this, and has called for moderation. Analysts have stated that if an invasion to Ukraine by Russia occurs, it would be the beginning of a new Cold War, with all the implications that this may bring to the West.z

PHILADELPHIA GAS WORKS
NOTICE OF PROPOSED GAS COST RATE DECREASE
AVISO DE LA PROPUESTA DE DISMINUCIÓN DE LA TARIFA DEL COSTO DEL GAS
To Our Customers: As part of its annual Gas Cost Rate (GCR) filing, Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) is filing a request with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to decrease the GCR portion of your bill effective September 1, 2022. Customers are notified of the annual rate increase or decrease by providing this notice for the annual GCR filing on March 1. PGW is requesting a projected rate decrease of $0.0075 per one thousand cubic feet (Mcf) based upon a comparison between the GCR effective March 1, 2022 ($5.6123 per Mcf) and the projected rate in its annual GCR filing ($5.6048 per Mcf). This notice describes PGW’s gas cost rate request, the PUC’s role, and what actions you can take.
The GCR is designed to recover the cost of natural gas that PGW purchases from gas suppliers and does not include a profit margin. The rate will be recalculated to show actual costs on a quarterly basis. Customers are notified of this quarterly rate recalculation by a message on each customer’s bill after the dates of each quarterly filing. The quarterly filing dates are March 1, June 1, September 1, and December 1. The rate may change if the recalculated rate is different by more than 2% from the rate that is approved. PGW Gas Cost Rate Decrease PGW has requested an overall rate decrease of approximately $ 321,295 per year. If PGW’s entire request is approved, the total bill for a typical General Service (GS) Residential Heating Customer using 78 thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of natural gas per year would decrease from $118.95 to $118.90 per month or by approximately 0.04%. The total bill for a typical GS Commercial Heating Customer using 331 Mcf of natural gas per year would decrease from $397.56 to $397.35 per month or by approximately 0.05%. The total bill for a typical GS Industrial Heating Customer using 885 Mcf of natural gas per year would decrease from $1065.50 to $1064.90 per month or by approximately 0.05%.
The total bill for a typical Municipal Service (MS) Heating Customer using 1,148 Mcf of natural gas per year would decrease from $1,261.83 to $1,261.11 per month or by approximately 0.06%.
The total bill for a typical Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) Heating Customer using 395 Mcf of natural gas per year would decrease from $476.77 to $476.52 per month or by approximately 0.05%.
The total bill for a typical Philadelphia GS Housing Authority (PHA/GS) Heating Customer using 89 Mcf of natural gas per year would decrease from $127.44 to $ 127.38 per month or by approximately 0.05%.

ecently, Leon Krauze, the new acclaimed anchor of Univision News Night Edition, used the word “Afroestadounidenses” concerning minority statistics on issues. But, not only has he used that word to refer to the black population of the United States. What exists in recent times is linguistic revisionism. For example, there is a tendency to eliminate “americano” as a demonym for persons born in the U.S.A. For decades the Spanish-language Media, university academics, and institutions used “Afroamericanos” and “Mexicoamericanos” as gentilics. Forty-three years ago, when I started my journalistic journey in the United States already existed the Cruz Roja Americana (ARC), the Sociedad Americana del Cáncer (ACS), the Asociación Americana del Corazón (AHA), the Asociación Americana del Pulmón (ALA), and the Fondo Mexico Americano Educacional y de Defensa Legal (MALDEF). Never was it thought to commit the foolishness to translate MALDEF as the Fondo Educativo y de Defensa Legal México-Estadounidense, like nowadays. Newly arrived Latin American immigrants are uncomfortable that the “gringos” take the word American because the inhabitants of the Rio Grande to Tierra del Fuego in the south also consider themselves Americans. But we have to understand why the emphasis on America and Americano defines the United States and Americans. The Royal Spanish Academy Dictionary (DRAE) says in two of its six entries referring to Americano the following: In the first:” Native of America.” From the whole continent. And in the fourth: “estadounidense. “The paradigm is that estados unidos without identifying a place or territory is a system of federated government. That is why some countries of our continent have borne or bear the name of the United States. Without going any further, the official name of Mexico is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, used in the constitutions of 1824 and 1917.

Even there was the United States of Buenos Aires and Chile, which lasted from 1818 to 1820 in the Colombian island of San Andrés. The sailor, Louis-Michel Aury, plenipotentiary ambassador of both countries, commanded the joint venture. But the only country called the United States of America is where I live. So it has been since the Declaration of Independence, on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 245 years ago. The United States of America has impacted the popular culture in the Americas, including the language. That is why we say automóvil americano, café americano, pagar a la americana, cortina americana, barra americana, y Futbol Americano. Furthermore, Piero’s iconic song is called “Los Americanos.” No los estadounidenses. The famous William Lederer y Eugene Burdick 1958 novel in Spanish is “El americano feo,” and the 1963 movie starring Marlon Brando. Americano should be used without reservations and leave aside that absent-minded purist spirit of assigning “estadounidense” to entities or compound words that look and sounds false. z

But the only country called the United States of America is where I live.
