f it is true that poets are, indeed, the “unacknowledged legislators of the world,” as Shelley claimed, then it makes sense that poetry is often all we have to make sense of the tragedies and chaos we witness in the world. Puerto Rican poet Raquel Salas Rivera, 2019-2020 Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, is one such legislator of their homeland of Puerto Rico, as they write of the complexities of Puerto Rican identity and community. In a recent poem, called “the independence (of puerto rico)”, Salas Rivera describes a sense of unity that is itself a form of independence for the Puerto Rican people, which exists in defiance of Puerto Rico’s status as a colony of the United States: “and in all things we are independent, even in the most colonized hole of our porous fear; even in the panadería most packed with papers that cover ads; even in the corrosive act of saying we are only an island; even that we have done looking each other in the face,

ENGLISH gathering cement blocks, arming the neighbor’s storage rooms; even from afar, it has been us who has gone to the post office and sent cans and batteries.” In acts of individual sacrifice, collective response, Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico, in Philadelphia, in New York City, in Florida, and beyond have achieved a kind of independence wrought from necessity - a power and determination to aid each other directly. Boricuas have, “even from afar,” worked together to send “cans and batteries,” and the necessities which have been denied many people struggling to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017, and now contending with the effects of the ongoing earthquakes hitting the southern part of the island. According to poets.org, Salas Rivera said that the poem speaks to the fact that “our supposed smallness, our vulnerability, and our tenderness mark moments of true independence, in which we have successfully broken away from our oppressors in order to experience our beauty in all its splendor.” That relationship might represent the strongest hope for Puerto Rico going, encapsulated in a message which community organizer and activist Charito Morales shared at a Jan. 20 protest outside of Taller Puertorriqueno. “The diaspora is listening and...we are ready for whatever we have to do for our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico. You’re not alone, we’re not going to abandon you,” Morales said. ❚ THE EDITOR

i es cierto que los poetas son, de hecho, los "legisladores no reconocidos del mundo", como afirmó Shelley, entonces tiene sentido que la poesía sea a menudo todo lo que tenemos para dar sentido a las tragedias y al caos que presenciamos en el mundo. La poeta puertorriqueña Raquel Salas Rivera, Poeta Laureada de Filadelfia para el período 20192020, es una de esas legisladoras de su patria, Puerto Rico, cuando escribe sobre las complejidades de la identidad y la comunidad puertorriqueña. En actos de sacrificio individual y respuesta colectiva, los puertorriqueños en Puerto Rico, en Filadelfia, en la ciudad de Nueva York, en la Florida y más allá han logrado una especie de independencia forjada por la necesidad –un poder y una determinación para ayudarse mutuamente de manera directa. Los boricuas han trabajado juntos, "incluso desde lejos", para enviar "latas y baterías" y las necesi-

dades que se les han negado a muchas personas que luchan por recuperarse de la devastación del huracán María en el 2017, y que ahora luchan contra los efectos de los continuos terremotos que azotan el sur de la isla. Según poets.org, Salas Rivera dijo que el poema habla de que "nuestra supuesta pequeñez, nuestra vulnerabilidad y nuestra ternura marcan momentos de profunda independencia, en los cuales hemos logrado romper con nuestros opresores para poder vivir nuestra hermosura en todo su esplendor". Esa relación podría representar la esperanza más fuerte para la marcha de Puerto Rico, encapsulada en un mensaje que la organizadora comunitaria y activista Charito Morales compartió en una protesta el 20 de enero en las afueras del Taller Puertorriqueño. “La diáspora está escuchando y estamos listos para lo que tengamos que hacer por nuestros hermanos y hermanas de Puerto Rico. n 2016, something happened in Berna Altok’s life that she’d always wanted: she got a U.S. green card through its lottery system. Back in her home country of Turkey, Altok graduated from university with a bachelor’s degree and had spent several years as a procurement specialist for many companies. But the opportunity to come to the U.S. was once-in-a-lifetime, so she made the jump. “I left everything behind and moved to Philadelphia by myself,” said Altok. Her first jobs in Philly were in an ice cream shop and clothing store, which she held down while applying to professional jobs in her field. Unlike in Turkey, where her education and experience would get her a job almost anywhere, Altok found it difficult to even get a response to the applications she sent after she moved here. “I had five years of experience, I had the chance

Altok’s experience is one familiar to a lot of immigrants that come to the U.S. with degrees from foreign universities looking to continue their professional careers. Many struggle finding similar employment, whether it be because they’re not used to the U.S. work culture, or because U.S. employers don’t take their degrees and experiences as seriously as someone homegrown and educated in the U.S. “I need to be honest, I lost a lot of faith,” said Altok. But at her lowest point, Altok found the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians and its International Professionals Program. It is an eight-week intensive training program that teaches

eligible immigrants everything about the U.S. employment process — from resume writing and interviewing, to building a professional network and career planning. At first, Altok couldn’t participate because of her busy work schedule, but was able to complete the program in 2018. After that, she took part in the Welcoming Center’s Immigrant Fellowship program, which finally landed her a job with the city as a technician in the Office of Procurement. “I was me again,” said Altok. With Altok’s story in mind and the successes of many other immigrants who have gone to the Welcoming Center for professional help, Philadelphia’s Office of Workforce Development announced its Engaging Immigrant Talent initiative on Jan. 15. The initiative is an 18-month partnership between the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians and the Office of Workforce Development that represents a first step in developing a citywide immigrant workforce strategy.

Después de eso, estuvo en el programa de Immigrant Fellowship del Centro de Bienvenida, que finalmente le dio un empleo con la ciudad como técnica en la Oficina de Aprovisionamiento. “Volví a ser yo”, dijo Altok. involved. The first candidate to talk about comprehensive immigration reform was former housing secretary Julian Castro, who was building on his experience as a second-generation immigrant in a country that continues to take the Hispanic community for granted. After retiring from the race, Castro gave his support to Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren in her campaign for "structural change" in the country. Last Tuesday, Castro shared on social networks what he describes as "Elizabeth's vision for the future of our country," which combines key elements for our community: education, health, and immigration. In an extensive and detailed document, the Warren campaign explains how the needs of Latinos, although exacerbated in the media struggle during the Trump Administration, are a much deeper issue. “From Tejano ranchers losing their land in the Southwest to students punished for speaking Spanish in school to toxic dumping in Puerto Rico, the

Based on this, the senator proposes: • A Pre-K12 Education plan that ensures access to high-quality education regardless of race, color, residence, the language spoken at home, or immigration status. • A Comprehensive Debt Relief Plan for Puerto Rico • The remodeling of the immigration system that includes a path to citizenship and "fix-

ing the crisis at the border.” • Ending the practice of mass incarceration. • A comprehensive approach to climate change that ensures "justice for communities of color that have borne the brunt of environmental pollution.” • And finally, closing the wage gap between Latinas and everyone else, "because it's time we fully value the work of women of color.” Similarly, the Warren campaign explains how its overall projects will help close the wage and development gap experienced by Latinos –and communities of color in general– in the United States. From affordable housing to bankruptcy; from childcare to disability rights, to election reform; from worker empowerment to entrepreneurship, to free education and an end to student debt, to LGBTQ+ rights… Warren seems to show that, in fact, she has a plan for everything. While candidates like South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former Vice President Joe Biden have presented their promises to the Hispanic community –which similarly include immigration reform, health care, housing, and education– the Warren campaign seems to be taking it a step further, putting itself in the shoes of the millions of Latinos who still hope to see themselves not reflected as a demographic, but as part of the country's social fabric. ❚

he 2020 AL DÍA Top Doctors Forum shed a light on some of the significant leaders who exist within the Latino

community. "We are truly united in setting an example for our Latino community of resilience, of perseverance and dedication,” said Dr. Johanna Vidal-Phelan, senior medical director of pediatrics at UPMC. When the annual Top Doctors event first took shape in 2019, it was done with a clear objective in mind. “We felt the need to showcase the incredible talent and accomplishments of physicians of Hispanic, Latino origin who are practicing in this country, and particularly in the area,” said Dr. Daniel Schidlow, board chair. With this objective in place, AL DÍA honored four outstanding Latino medical professionals in the region — Dr. Christian Bermudez, Dr. Carmen Guerra, Dr. Victor Navarro and Dr. Natalia Ortiz-Torrent — who exemplified just that. As each honoree accepted their award, they not only expressed great gratitude for the honor, but also made sure to express the importance of helping shape the next generation of Latino medical professionals. “You represent the hope of our future,” Dr. Carmen Guerra said, referring to the medical students who were in the room.

"Estamos verdaderamente unidos en dar ejemplo de resiliencia, perseverancia y dedicación a nuestra comunidad latina”, dijo la doctora Johanna Vidal-Phelan, directora sénior de pediatría del Centro Médico de la Universidad de Pittsburgh (UPMC por sus siglas en inglés). Natalia Ortiz-Torrent, que son claro ejemplo de esto. ENGLISH For Dr. Victor Navarro, he shared the story of his parents, who emigrated from Mexico and while they were “quite poor,” they taught him the importance of giving back. After spending years in the United States, his parents went back to their small town in Mexico and built a church and septic systems, which showed just how impactful the act of giving back can be. “They did many things that that little town would not have had had they not given back,” he said. Now, in his profession, Navarro makes sure to do the same and spread that message to young professionals, as well as his patients. “Every time I encounter a Latino or Latina in my office, I feel that connection and I feel that need to give back,” Navarro added. “It’s that kind of spirit that we extract from our backgrounds that really give us the opportunity to have a great impact on our youth.” For Dr. Natalia Ortiz-Torrent, she said she would not have made it to where she is today without the value of mentors and sponsors throughout her career. It’s why in addition to her work as a physiatrist, her work as president of SILAMP is so important to her. “We need to do our best to pave the way for the younger generation,” she said. “We need to help them get a seat at the table… and teach them how to navigate their careers and overcome the barriers.” As we look at the future of the medical profession and the Latino community as a whole, it really starts with the current generation of professionals — those who have been in their field of work for decades and have a world of knowledge to pass on to others. These honorees are four of many physicians who represent the evolution of the medical and healthcare industry in the region and beyond. ❚

Después de pasar muchos años en los Estados Unidos, sus padres regresaron a su pequeño pueblo en México y construyeron una iglesia y sistemas sépticos, lo cual le mostró el impacto que tiene el acto de dar. “Hicieron muchas cosas que ese pueblito no hubiera tenido, de no haber sido por su acto de retribuir a la sociedad”, afirmó. Ahora, en su vida profesional, Navarro no olvida nunca hacer lo mismo y diseminar el mensaje entre los jóvenes profesionales y sus pacientes. “Cada vez que me reúno con un latino o latina en mi oficina, siento esa conexión y esa necesidad de dar”, agregó Navarro. “Es ese espíritu que extraemos de nuestras historias personales lo que nos da la oportunidad de tener un gran impacto en los jóvenes”. La Dr. Natalia Ortiz-Torrent dijo que no hubiera podido llegar a donde está hoy sin el valor de sus mentores y patrocinadores a lo largo de toda su carrera. Es por esto que además de su trabajo como fisiatra, es igual de importante para ella su trabajo como presidente en SILAMP. “Necesitamos hacer nuestro mejor esfuerzo para abrir el camino a las generaciones más jóvenes”, dijo. “Necesitamos ayudarlos a participar… y enseñarles cómo navegar por su vida profesional y superar las barreras que se presenten”. ours after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake had rocked Puerto Rico in the pre-dawn hours of Jan. 7, Philly Boricuas, a local grassroots organization in Philadelphia, called for an emergency planning meeting at Providence Center, in Fairhill, Philadelphia. Organizers decided to spearhead a relief drive for those in the hardest-hit areas in the southern part of the island, and start collecting donations to create emergency backpacks. The group, which as of Jan. 28 has sent 1,276 pounds of donations to the island, worked with other partners in Philadelphia and on the ground in Puerto Rico to collect and distribute the vital supplies. They are a local example of the pattern of grassroots organizing throughout the Puerto

Rican diaspora and on the island which has grown out of Puerto Ricans’ distrust of their own government’s ability and willingness to efficiently respond to natural disasters. From an open online platform called SuministrosPR, which has allowed for a full listing of the needs of each individual neighborhood and municipality affected by the recent earthquakes, to the emergency backpacks which Philly Boricuas organizers Puchi De Jesus and Adrian Mercado handed out camp to camp, door to door, in a visit to the island Jan. 18-21, it has been citizen-powered,

On Jan. 16, President Donald Trump declared a major disaster in the southern portion of the island, freeing up some federal assistance funds “on an ongoing basis”. That same day, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson authorized the release of an additional $8.2 billion of the more than $18 billion of Congress-approved aid allotted to the island in the aftermath of María. Though many Puerto Ricans applaud the release of the HUD funds, they also say that it is too little, too late, as the government’s disaster response has been too slow to meet the needs of the more than 8,000 people who have been displaced by the earthquakes.

When they landed in Puerto Rico on Jan. 18, donations and emergency backpacks in tow, Mercado and De Jesus used the Geological Survey map to identify where the hardest hit areas of the island were. They focused much of their distribution efforts on Guánica, Yauco, and Guayanilla as the three most affected towns. They also used the listings and contact information on the SuministrosPR website to plan out which areas to visit and distribute supplies to, according to the needs posted by individual camps. The website - designed by Juan Pablo Díaz, a well known comedian and host of the Youtube show, Estado Crítico, along with Giovanni Collazo, Orlando Vélez, and Javier W. Vélez - has taken off since it was launched on Jan. 12. It is now recommended by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) itself as a valuable tool for aid distribution. Mercado and De Jesus’ journey took them to official government-run shelters and unofficial camps across the region, some of which consisted of tents pitched in baseball fields, or sleeping bags at school buildings. In the course of their visit, they learned that many people still did not have an emergency plan for how to leave their house or their neighborhood in the event of another major seismic event or a tsunami, though it had been over a week after the major earthquake and in the midst of experiencing daily aftershocks. “With people still sticking around and living in houses that are in danger of collapsing, you have to have a plan...Our goal was to just get people ready to know what to do in case of an emergency,” Mercado said. That reassurance also helps relieve some of the stress that many people are living with due to the constant threat of earthquakes, and the uncer-

Mercado reported that many people they spoke with in the course of distributing supplies said that they hadn’t interacted with any government officials; one man in Playa Santa told Mercado, “It’s just been people like you, ordinary people just swinging by.” Frustration at local municipal politicians as well as island-wide government has brewed among many of those who have been displaced. Mercado said that in Guánica, at least one camp leader said that that town’s mayor hadn’t shown up to check in on the camp until five days after the earthquake. And as recently as Jan. 27, the mayor of Ponce, María “Mayita” Meléndez, received criticism after telling a reporter that people in the camp at Ponce “loved” living there, in what many considered to be a tone-deaf response coming just days after one of the main camps in the area had been flooded this past weekend. As a warehouse of unused relief supplies dating to Hurricane María was discovered in Ponce on Jan. 18, calls for Governor Wanda Vázquez’s resignation have grown. Vázquez’s failure to release a plan for permanent shelter for those who have been displaced, as well as the continued hold up of federal funds on the part of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, have contributed to what Mercado described as a “cynical” view that many Puerto Ricans have of any possibility of govern-

ment support, whether it be from La Fortaleza in San Juan or the White House in Washington, D.C.

FILLING THE VOID

All of this means that Puerto Ricans like Mercado view it as less than a triumph that once again, regular citizens and residents are having to bootstrap relief operations in place of government aid. “It’s optimistic about people stepping up and doing their part, and filling in the void, but you’re really also at the same time angry and depressed about it,” Mercado said.

As Benjamín Torres Gotay wrote in an opinion column in El Nuevo Día on Jan. 19, SuministrosPR was perhaps the “most clear example of the citizen response to the collapse of institutions,” as Díaz and his friends were able to “quickly and without cost create what we all know, hand on heart, that the government would have done late, expensively, and badly.” For Karen Rodriguez, who organized the Power 4 Puerto Rico protest outside of the HUD offices in Center City, Philadelphia held on Jan. 16, what Mercado and De Jesus saw on the island in their visit in the aftermath of the major earthquake on Jan. 7 is nothing new. She said that both the efforts of protesters to demand HUD release aid, as well as the earthquake relief drive, are the most recent examples of the ways in which the Puerto Rican diaspora on the U.S. mainland has filled in the gaps to support Puerto Ricans on the island. “If it wasn’t for the diaspora community, we would have starving people in Puerto Rico. The discovery of the warehouses on Jan. 18 was evidence, Morales said, of what many Puerto Ricans already suspected. “For this reason, 4,645 people and many more died,” she said, citing the death toll from Hurricane María as calculated by a 2018 report from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

LONG TERM SOLUTIONS

Mercado said people were appreciative of the fact that they had flown to the island from Philadelphia to be there to support the communities there. He said it “feels good to be a part of” a larger network offering support, including other Puerto Ricans on the island as well as diaspora communities in Florida and New York. But ultimately, Mercado said that grassroots organizing won’t be enough. “There is an optimism that after natural disasters, Puerto Rico was able to kind of do this kind of work after the hurricane and after the earthquake, but there’s a limit to what small groups can do,” Mercado said. “Charity only goes so far.” ❚

Dr. Elena Rios, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) since 1998, has been a leader for advancement in national policy to support Latinos in medicine and resources serving the Latino medical community throughout her career. On Jan. 22, in a conversation with AL DIA CEO and Founder Hernán Guaracao, Rios highlighted the need for medical professionals, legislators, and industry leaders alike to commit to ensuring that more Latinos enter medical school and become doctors. When Rios helped found NHMA in 1994, it was with the goal of supporting Hispanic physicians to take on leadership roles in the medical profession in order to better serve Latinos and other underrepresented and underserved populations in the U.S. NHMA currently represents more than 50,000 Hispanic physicians across the country.

The difficulties of attending medical school and succeeding in the profession for many Latino students are ones that Rios knows firsthand from her experiences. The granddaughter of Mexican immigrants, Rios was born and raised in Los Angeles. She didn’t discover until high school that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine. That interest came after working alongside her mom, who was studying to be a nurse, at the community hospital. The first in her family to attend college, Rios went on to attend Stanford University for her undergraduate degree. She ultimately received her medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Rios said that she and the other 20 Latino students in the entering medical class of UCLA in 1982 were all focused on understanding how to make an impact in the field “Latinos there were very interested in figuring out how to help, how we could continue to build what we knew as a network, a network of Laitno medical students,” she said. That led Rios to co-found the National Network of Latin American Medical Students in 1989. Rios said many of the same barriers she faced on her path to becoming a doctor remain as challenges for Latino medical students today. Among those barriers are financial constraints and fear of incurring debt. To that end, NHMA created a scholarship program for medical students, dental students, and nursing students. They also have a college health scholars program to help pair doctors, entists, and nurses with students in each profession to promote mentorship. Rios noted, however, that in order to ensure that Latino communities are being served adequately by medical professionals, it’s essential to be “more serious about cultural competence” for all physicians. “I think the issues of training others to take care of our population is very much what’s going to happen. Because we’re not going to catch up in the next generation, to have as many Latino doctors as we need for all the Latino patients. But what we do need is Latino doctors to be in positions where they can change the hospitals and the clinics and the medical

schools in this country to be more respective of our communities,” she said. Fighting for resources and culturally competent care extends to the realm of politics as well, said Rios. “If we are connected to those who write the laws in this country, we can help them do something faster that can help our communities,” she said. Rios said that the goal for NHMA and Latino medical professionals in influencing legislation around their communities' need is to get involved in policy, rather than politics. “If you get involved in policy-making, and you serve as a resource because you’re an expert and you know your communities’ needs, Congress and senators’ staff will ask you for ideas,” Rios said. Rios invited those in attendance on Jan. 22 to gather once again at the 24th Annual Hispanic Health Conference, which NHMA will co-host with the Hispanic Dental Association in Washington, D.C. from April 30 - May 3. About 700 people in the healthcare industry, medical profession, government, and beyond will gather to talk about how to improve strategies for Latino health, Rios said. Though Rios has received many awards throughout her career, she sees her legacy as being directly related to the growth of NHMA — which she hopes will soon be able to establish a chapter in Philadelphia. “That’s the legacy, that we continue that organization with the next generation, and we have an institutionalized organization with support that’s sustainable and that’s what we’re working on right now,” she said..❚

La NHMA actualmente representa a más de 50.000 médicos hispanos en todo el país. Mencionó que la prioridad de su trabajo era avanzar hacia la meta de lograr que más latinos ingresaran a la facultad de medicina. “No hay duda de que necesitamos tener una fuerza de trabajo que refleje a nuestra población”, afirmó. Las dificultades que existen para muchos latinos de poder asistir a la facultad de medicina y tener éxito en la profesión las conoce Ríos de primera mano. Nieta de inmigrantes mexicanos, Ríos nació y creció en Los Ángeles. Descubrió solo hasta llegar a la secundaria que quería estudiar medicina; después de haber trabajado junto a su madre, que estudiaba enfermería en el hospital de la comunidad. Luego ingresó en la Universidad Stanford para cursar sus estudios de pregrado, con lo que fue la primera persona de su familia en asistir a la universidad, para finalmente graduarse de medicina en la Universidad de California, Los Ángeles (UCLA). Dijo que ella, así como otros 20 estudiantes latinos que ingresaron en 1982 a la carrera de medicina se enfocaban en comprender cómo crear un impacto en su campo. “Los latinos que estudiaban allí estaban muy interesados en saber cómo ayudar, cómo podíamos seguir construyendo lo que era nuestra red, una red de estudiantes de medicina latinos”, afirmó. Eso fue lo que condujo a Ríos a ser la cofundadora de la Red Nacional de Estudiantes de Medicina Latinoamericanos en 1989. Ríos sostuvo que los estudiantes de medicina latinos enfrentan hoy las mismas barreras que ella enfrentó en su carrera para llegar a ser doctora.

Entre esas barreras se encuentran las limitaciones financieras y el temor a incurrir en deudas. Con esto en mente, la NHMA creó un programa de becas para los estudiantes de medicina, de dentistería y enfermería; y además cuenta con un programa universitario de académicos de la salud que conforma parejas de doctores, dentistas y enfermeras con estudiantes de cada profesión, para promover la modalidad de mentoría. Ríos anotó, no obstante, que para poder asegurar la adecuada atención a las comunidades latinas por parte de los profesionales de la medicina es esencial tomar “más en serio la competencia cultural” de todos los doctores. “Pienso que lo que va a suceder es que tendremos dificultades para capacitar a otros para cuidar a nuestra población porque en la siguiente generación no podremos igualar la cantidad de doctores latinos con todos los pacientes latinos. Lo que sí necesitamos son doctores latinos que estén en cargos donde puedan cambiar los hospitales y las clínicas y las facultades de medicina en este país para que sean más respetuosos con nuestras comunidades”, expresó. Luchar por recursos y un cuidado en salud culturalmente competente también se extiende hasta el ámbito de la política, dijo Ríos. “Si estamos conectados con aquellos que escriben las leyes en este país, podemos contribuir a que ayuden a nuestras comunidades de manera más rápida”, dijo. Ríos dijo que la meta de la NHMA y de los profesionales latinos del campo médico al influir en la legislación relacionada con las necesidades de la comunidad es participar en políticas más que en la política. “Si haces políticas, y sirves de recurso por ser un experto y conoces las necesidades de tu comunidad, el Congreso y los senadores consultarán tus ideas” dijo Ríos. El 22 de enero, Ríos invitó a los asistentes a reunirse de nuevo en la 24th Annual Hispanic Health Conference, donde la NHMA será coanfitriona junto con la Asociación Dental Hispana en Washington, D.C. del 30 de abril al 3 de mayo. Allí se reunirán unas 700 personas de la industria de la salud, la profesión médica y el gobierno, entre otros, para dialogar acerca de cómo mejorar estrategias para los latinos en materia de salud, comentó Ríos. Aunque Ríos has recibido muchos premios a lo largo de su carrera, ve como su legado está directamente relacionado con el crecimiento de la NHMA; de la cual espera podrá abrir muy pronto una división en Filadelfia. “El legado es ese: dar continuidad a la organización en la siguiente generación, y tener una organización institucional con un apoyo que sea sostenible, y con el cual estamos trabajando desde ya” dijo.❚

n 2016, iLE (Ileana Cabra Joglar) charmed the music industry with her first album, a mix of boleros, boogaloo and even a couple of coplas in English, under the title Ilevitable, an album which set the tone for a new genre with the best of Puerto Rican musical tradition. In a conversation with AL DÍA, iLE opened a window on the process that has led to a second album and international recognition.

IT ALL STARTS AT HOME

Born in San Juan in 1989, this young singer took her first musical steps in the living room of her home, surrounded by a family where the arts were the framework that animated all the meetings. "Between the ages of fifteen and sixteen, my brothers started their group and invited me to sing a song," she says of the group founded by René Pérez Joglar (Resident) and Eduardo José Cabra Martínez (Visitor) under the name Calle 13 –which honors the

"I always take every opportunity of the live performance to give myself totally there on stage." From then on, she began her process of formal vocal education with two music icons: Hilda Ramos and Gema Corredera, whom she considers her teachers. "I knew Gema as a singer, but it was thanks to my sister that I knew she was teaching, and that's when the real connection began," she recalls. "I'm super grateful to her because in singing you might meet similar teachers with whom you could be learning more or less the same thing, but with Gema, I put more emphasis on the more performing part, and that was super valuable to me.” But the time to focus on her own work was an adventure of personal exploration that would change her professional course forever. After years of following the rhythm of the music at home, the moment to listen to herself was inevitable. In 2015, iLE began the process of composing her first solo album, which was produced with the help of Ismael Cancel, who is now considered one of the most important musicians, percussionists, and composers in Puerto Rico. "It's a weird process because sometimes you want to sit down and write and have it all come out at once. And it doesn't. You get frustrated and in the end, maybe it's not necessarily about you, but you have to understand that it's a process.” Released in May 2016, her first album ranked her as one of the best Latin American performers. Along with musicians

like Piro Rodríguez, Charlie Sepúlveda, Bayrex Jiménez, Eduardo Cabra, Fofé Abreu and even Cheo Feliciano, iLE embarked on her first tour just two months later, and by September she already had a Latin Grammy nomination.

A VOICE OF PROTEST

Following the scandal that engulfed her native island after a private chat by former Gov. Ricardo Rosselló –where misogyny, endogenous racism, and corruption were the main protagonists– iLE joined the national sentiment and the protest movement that cried out for radical change in Puerto Rico. "That was crazy. Even though it's been several months, I feel that it's still so alive," she says of the demonstrations that took over the streets of San Juan and much of the island, and which inspired a song in collaboration with her brother Residente and Bad Bunny, called Afilando los cuchillos, which became the soundtrack of the moment. "It was like a dream come true for me because I've really been waiting my whole life for something like this to happen, for people to come out of their houses and protest. Living it, for me, was very wonderful," she recalls.

NEW ALBUM, NEW BATTLE

With the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017 –where more than 4,600 people died, and the nation's infrastructure was destroyed– Puerto Rico's recovery has been very uphill. And the sense of frustration and anger of its people is felt in iLE's second album, Almadura, released in May 2019, whose title alternates the "r" and "l" of the Puerto Rican accent with a pun. This time, iLE experiments with the traditional sounds that carry lyrics of protest, resistance, and challenge to the social, economic and even climatic injustices of which all of Latin America is victim. Together with nine musicians, the young singer is on a tour of the United States, and hopes that people will "enjoy the performance.” "If I hope for anything, it's that people will let themselves go," she concludes. "I always take every opportunity of the live performances to give myself totally there on stage. I hope that (the audience) will also connect.”❚

ESPAÑOL invitaron a cantar una canción”, cuenta sobre el grupo fundado por René Pérez Joglar (Residente) y Eduardo José Cabra Martínez (Visitante) bajo el nombre Calle 13 –que hace honor a la calle donde la casa de la familia está ubicada en la isla. A partir de entonces, comenzó su proceso de educación vocal formal, de la mano de dos íconos de la música: Hilda Ramos y Gema Corredera, a quienes considera sus maestras. “Conocía a Gema como cantante, pero fue gracias a mi hermana que supe que daba clases y ahí empezó la conexión de verdad”, recuerda. “Le estoy súper agradecida, porque en el canto puede que te encuentres con maestros similares con quienes podrías estar aprendiendo más o menos lo mismo, pero con Gema le puse más énfasis a la parte más interpretativa, y eso para mí fue súper valioso”. Pero el momento de centrarse en su propio trabajo fue una aventura de exploración personal que cambiaría para siempre su rumbo profesional. Después de años siguiendo el ritmo de la música del hogar, el momento de escucharse a sí misma era inevitable. A partir del 2015 iLE comienza el proceso de componer su primer álbum solista, cuya producción contó con la ayuda de Ismael Cancel, considerado hoy en día uno de los músicos, percusionistas y compositores más importantes de Puerto Rico. “Es un proceso raro, porque a veces uno pretende sentarse y

escribir y que todo salga de una vez. Y no es así. Uno se frustra y al final quizás no tiene que ver necesariamente con uno sino que hay que entender que es un proceso”. Publicado en mayo del 2016, su primer disco le clasificó como una de las mejores intérpretes latinoamericanas. Junto a músicos como Piro Rodríguez, Charlie Sepúlveda, Bayrex Jiménez, Eduardo Cabra, Fofé Abreu e incluso Cheo Feliciano, iLE se embarcó en su primer tour tan sólo dos meses después, y para septiembre ya contaba con una nominación a los premios Grammy Latino.

UNA VOZ DE PROTESTA

Tras el escándalo que envolvió a su isla natal después de que se hiciera público un chat privado del ex gobernador Ricardo Rosselló –donde la misoginia, el racismo endógeno y la corrupción fueron principales protagonistas– iLE se sumó al sentimiento nacional y al movimiento de protesta que pidió a gritos un cambio radical en Puerto Rico. “Eso fue una locura. A pesar de que ya pasaron varios meses, siento que todavía está tan vivo”, habla de las manifestaciones que tomaron las calles de San Juan y de gran parte de la isla, y que inspiró una canción en colaboración con su hermano Residente y Bad Bunny, llamada Afilando los cuchillos, y que se transformó en la banda sonora del momento. “Era como un sueño hecho realidad para mí, porque realmente llevo toda mi vida esperando a que pase algo así de contundente, como para que la gente salga de sus casas y protesten. Vivirlo, para mí, fue muy maravilloso,” recuerda.

UN NUEVO DISCO DE BATALLA

Con el paso del huracán María en el 2017 – donde perecieron más de 4.600 personas, y destruyó la infraestructura de la nación– la recuperación de Puerto Rico ha sido muy cuesta arriba. Y la sensación de frustración y rabia de su gente se siente en el segundo disco de iLE, Almadura, publicado en mayo del 2019, y cuyo título alterna la “r” y la “l” del acento puertorriqueño con un juego de palabras. Esta vez, iLE experimenta con los sonidos tradicionales que cargan líricas de protesta, de resistencia y de impugnación ante las injusticias sociales, económicas y hasta climáticas de las que es víctima toda Latinoamérica.
