endall Martinez-Wright is an Afro-Boricua transgender woman from the small town of Palmyra, Missouri, but she’s already making big waves in local politics, and her impact will be monumental if she wins a seat in the Missouri’s House of Representatives next year.

The topic of representation often comes up in conversations of politics, social justice and even in Hollywood. It’s undoubtedly important for people of all backgrounds to see themselves and their identities reflected in their elected officials, in policy decisions, and in mainstream film and TV. If this proud Afro-Latina trans candidate becomes a representative of her community in Missouri, she will disrupt the local political realm that has long been dominated by white, conservative men.

Martinez-Wright’s very existence is resistance.

To be Black, Latina, and a trans woman is statistically a dangerous combination, but here is MarinezWright, standing proud and mighty in who she is, and fighting to enact real change from the Missouri House.

Black trans women are killed at disproportionate rates because of the lethal intersection of racism, misogyny, and transphobia. Last summer, six Black trans women, all under the age of 32, were murdered in the span of just nine days.

On a collective level, this country does not see trans women of color as human. Yet without pioneers like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, the modern LGBTQ+ movement as we know it would not exist.

Too often, the stories of trans women of color who changed history, or at least got the ball rolling for movements, are untold, erased or forgotten.

There’s Cecilia Chung, who in 2008 became the first trans woman and first person living openly with HIV to chair the San Francisco Human Rights Commission.

There’s Sir Lady Java, the trailblazing performer from the 1960s who challenged police harassment against her community and eventually joined the ACLU. Martinez-Wright is ready to follow in the footsteps of her trans women of color foremothers, and respectfully disturb the status quo, while making positive transformations in her beloved hometown of Palmyra, Missouri.

early eight years after its launch, the Latino Equity Fund has named Evelyn Barahona as its first-ever director.

In this role, Barahona will work alongside the Latino Equity Fund (LEF) advisory committee to enhance its advocacy work and allow a greater focus on its mission to address the longstanding health and economic inequities the Massachusetts Latino community often faces.

“If you have a large community that’s growing but they’re not really prospering, society ends up losing out,” Barahona said in a statement. “We want to help this underserved group prosper, which really can help the state as well.”

THE NEED FOR LEADERSHIP

Latinos make up about 20% of the population in Massachusetts. Boston has the largest total number of Latinos in the state at just over 130,000 in the city, making up around 16% of all Latinos in the state.

“The Latino Equity Fund will certainly benefit from having a dedicated person focusing on our strategy and stakeholder groups,” said Juan Lopera, co-chair of the Latino Equity Fund, in the announcement. “Evelyn has the track record of being a big-picture thinker who gets things done. Her role as director is a crucial one because it will help us realize the vision for health equity and economic inclusion for our Latino community.”

That vision mirrors closely with the vision Barahona has as she takes on her new role.

“I want LEF to be the resource for Massachusetts’ Latino community when they think about issues; we can be the connector and convener for them. Nationally, I want us to become the model and framework for other funds throughout the United States to aspire to create equitable philanthropy for Latinos,” she said.

WORKING TOWARDS A COMMON GOAL

Barahona begins her new role as the Director of the Latino Equity Fund as it undertakes a $10 million fundraising campaign and ramps up efforts to increase vaccine equity and access for the Latino community in Boston.

LEF has also been working with the state to improve cultural adaptation and

underrepresented community engagement. In addition to those areas of focus, Barahona also sees a lack of broadband access and language barriers as other critical factors impacting the most vulnerable within the Latino community in Massachusetts. She hopes to address it all in her role as director.

Barahona currently serves as Board Chair of the Conexion Board of Directors, is a board member of The Latina Circle, founding board member of Amplify Latinx, and is a member of the Board of Ambassadors at Eastern Bank. She holds a bachelor’s degree in International Business from Northeastern University.

Established in 2013, the Latino Equity Fund is the first Latino-focused fund in the Greater Boston area. It is the result of a partnership between Latino philanthropists and leadership, the Boston Foundation and Hispanics in Philanthropy. z

The move comes as more Latinos continue to get bombarded with disinformation on social media, and remain one of the least vaccinated demographics.

In the bigger picture, it’s a collaboration between the Department of Health and Human Services, headed by Sec. Xavier Becerra, and WhatsApp’s parent company, Facebook. It comes as the Biden administration’s deadline to get 70% of U.S. adults inoculated by July 4 looms.

he judicial process in the United States is broken, but nowhere is this more true than within immigration court, which isn’t a true court system for many reasons.

Immigration courts operate within the Department of Justice (DOJ), the same agency charged with prosecuting criminal immigration cases in federal courts. At proceedings held near the border, and especially under former President Donald Trump’s administration, the flaws enabled the transformation of immigration courts into extensions of the DOJ’s enforcement agency rather than an institution that allowed due process.

Amid ongoing calls to move immigration courts out of the DOJ, there is also the issue that immigrants don’t have a right to a lawyer — only at their own expense.

This opens several potential barriers that prevent a detained immigrant from being able to access a lawyer — from their ability to afford it, language barriers, cultural obstacles, education level, and access to evidence and witnesses outside of the detention facility.

The Pennsylvania Immigrant Family Unity Project (PAIFUP) was launched in 2019, just months before Penn State Law released its report. It is the state’s first publicly-funded defense counsel project for immigrants facing deportation.

In its first year of providing free legal representation to detained immigrants, PAIFUP represented 38 clients and released 13 to their families, The Inquirer’s Jeff Gammage reported. The next year, despite limitations from the pandemic, PAIFUP was able to represent 49 clients and release 18.

hile president Joe Biden was traveling across Europe to meet with various world leaders, the White House announced on Tuesday, June 15, his nominations for nine new ambassador positions.

Three of the posts to be filled are the heads of U.S.-led missions to Mexico, Costa Rica and Paraguay. All nominees need to be confirmed by the Senate.

WHO IS KEN SALAZAR?

Among them, Ken Salazar was nominated to serve as the next ambassador to Mexico, America’s largest trading partner.

He knows Biden from his time in the Senate, where he represented Colorado from 2005 to 2009. Prior to that, Salazar became the first Latino elected to statewide office in Colorado when he ran for Attorney General.

After his election victory in 2008, Barack Obama tapped him to work in

He will work with the Mexican government to stem migration from Central America and ensure new labor regulations in the USMCA are followed.

The Colorado native had been rumored to be Biden’s pick for the job since last month, but other names in the running were former 2020 presidential candidate Julian Castro and former U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations, Bill Richardson.

Chapman was appointed by Trump, and served for 14 months in the position. The career diplomat was an expert on the country since he finished secondary school there, and served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the embassy in Brasilia from 2011 to 2014.

Last summer, he faced an inquiry from the House Foreign Affairs Committee for potentially using his post to benefit Trump’s reelection campaign.

he community activist to local politician pipeline has been gaining traction, and Missouri’s Kendall Martinez-Wright is following in the footsteps of trailblazers like Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Pramila Jayapal and Jamaal Bowman.

Similar to these members of Congress, Martinez-Wright understands the value of community, education, representation, and building movements from the ground up.

She is an Afro-Latina trans woman from Palmyra, Missouri, and recently sat down with AL DÍA to talk about why she’s running for her State House’s fifth district seat in 2022.

If elected, Martinez-Wright would become the first transgender woman of color to hold a seat in Missouri’s House of Representatives — a poltical sphere that is mostly white, male and conservative.

To make history in this way, especially during a time when state legislatures across the country are attempting to pass laws that limit the rights and freedoms of trans people, would mean the world, said Martinez-Wright.

“It would be an honor.

I tell people that I didn’t do this to make history, [I did it because] I was tired of people’s voices not being truly heard. I want to be, and I always have been, an advocate for showcasing everyone’s voices, whether they agree with me or not,” she said.

She represents multiple communities, and holds within her the rich history of Latinx and Black Americans, as well as the struggles and victories of the LGBTQ community, from the Stonewall riots to marriage equality.

It’s been a major reason her campaign has picked up steam since her announcement on April 22.

She doesn’t apologize for who she is, nor does she pretend to be something she’s not.

CONTINUING A LEGACY

Speaking of amplifying voices, Martinez-Wright did that for her fellow Black Missouri community members last summer, when she participated in the protests for racial justice, in what she referred to as a “call to action.”

She spoke about the gaslighting she’s experienced from people in her area that believe we are living in a post-racial world.

For Martinez-Wright, standing up for the Black Lives Matter movement is about more than elevating a conversation, it’s about reminding the country that these issues have not disappeared.

“I still vividly remember stories of my grandmother and my great grandmother and various other family members who lived in those times and how they fought to exercise civil rights,” she said. “People just have this idea that this world is different now. I have to remind them this is what we still have to fight for.”

ENDORSING AND CAMPAIGNING

In June, Martinez-Wright took a trip to New York City to help campaign for mayoral candidate Maya Wiley through door-to-door outreach, phone banks and canvassing.

When asked about the mayoral race, Martinez-Wright said all citizens of NYC should see and experience more equity to watch their beloved city become stronger than it was before. It was that realization that prompted the “last minute trip” to support Wiley, one of three Black women running in the election.

“I think that right now, more than ever, especially for Black women going into politics, it’s a huge step. We are our ancestors’ wildest dreams. So I am a firm believer that, you know, when it comes down to it, we’re going to not only talk the talk, then walk the walk,” she said.

The proud Boricua candidate also endorsed two other candidates, Tracy McCreery, running for Missouri State Senate, and Justice Tyrone Horne, candidate for Jackson County Missouri legislature.

I was tired of people’s voices not being truly heard. I want to be, and I always have been, an advocate for showcasing everyone’s voices, whether they agree with me or not Martinez-Wright said she’s supported McCreery for a long time, and appreciates her allyship to so many different communities, including African-Americans, Latinx Americans, LGBTQ individuals and more.

“She has been a champion,” she said of the Missouri State Representative.

Martinez-Wright met Horne through a mutual friend, and got to work with him on several projects. If he wins, Horne will be the youngest Jackson County legislator in the state of Missouri.

He would make history not only as being young, but also as being an African-American and Pacific Islander.

“He is also a member of the LGBTQ community, which is huge. This allows for his constituents to see someone at the table that looks like them and that identifies like them.

And that’s what we need to really push this country forward,” said Martinez-Wright.

EARLY ACTIVISM YEARS

Prior to announcing her own run for office, Martinez-Wright was making moves behind the scenes in local politics through her work with Empower Missouri and the Mid-Missouri Young Democrats, where she focused on human rights, infrastructure and criminal justice policy.

She describes herself as a “mover, shaker” in these areas, and has been one since

2010, when she joined Family Career and Community Leaders of America and Future Business Leaders of America while in high school.

Now that Martinez-Wright has ventured from high school activism and community work all the way to running for office, she relies on daily inspiration to fuel her campaign and stay grounded.

“When I wake up in the morning, first of all, I give God the glory because I was able to see another day. And then afterwards, I just remind myself why I do this. I’ll look at my phone and see a Snapchat from my sister with a photo of my baby niece, something cute or something funny, or I’ll see a text message from my mom that gets me going,” she said.

Martinez-Wright has also been motivated by the support given for her run from family, friends and across social media. She said it gives her comfort as she faces down intimidation of the majority Republican legislature.

OVERLOOKED ISSUES

PORTADA souri legislature, Martinez-Wright has observed some issues that weren’t being addressed as priorities, and she’s now seeing them more clearly as a candidate.

For example, over the last 11 years, she has heard conversations about Missouri’s wild hogs, and the problems they cause for the local agriculture industry.

“Back in the day, I was like ‘why are we talking about this?’ But then I did some research and it turns out that this is a serious issue with wild hogs creating a detriment to the agricultural community,” said Martinez-Wright. “And as a candidate, I realize that this is something we do need to address because I know that for small rural areas, this is money and time being destroyed.”

Learning more about this problem made her see that “the smallest thing” can have a significant impact on the local economy, environmental health and people’s livelihoods.

Martinez-Wright is also focused on providing healthcare for vulnerable populations in her town. Recently, the Missouri legislature refused to fund Medicaid expansion, which is now in the hands of the courts.

FEARLESS AND TRUTHFUL

If the funding is delayed any further, the repercussions could be disastrous.

“It can severely hurt these establishments, like nursing homes, to the point of closures. So we’re talking about thousands upon thousands of senior citizens who are significantly disabled being displaced, and left in the dark,” she explained.

Missouri prides itself on being a prolife state, but Martinez-Wright views this terminology as a true oxymoron given certain situations, like its denial of Medicaid expansion.

“This is not only an economic and social situation, but a humanity situation within the state, and we’re talking about thousands of individuals who rely on these services on a daily basis and are being disenfranchised.

That’s unacceptable,” she said.

In addition to agriculture and healthcare, Martinez-Wright prioritizes education and human rights. Moving from community organizing to running for office as an openly trans Afro-Latina from a small town was a huge leap, but she is pushing forward despite the odds.

n honor of the new federal holiday, Juneteenth, a day that celebrates the emancipation of African-American slaves, organizers and community members celebrated the opening of a new Harriet Tubman Museum in Cape May N.J. The new museum is focused on bringing attention to the struggles and accomplishments of Tubman, an American abolitionist who led dozens of slaves to freedom in the North by way of the Underground Railroad.

A JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION

Gates opened at 10:30 a.m. on June 19, and an event that celebrated the museum’s opening toop place just two blocks away at the Rotary Park.

There, about 200 people gathered for the city’s first official — under federal law — Juneteenth event, complete with traditional African drumming and speeches by local activists and leaders. People unable to attend

“They will present the regimental flag to some local descendants of Civil War heroes,” Mullock said.

Organizers had been working many years to officially get the museum up and running, and despite many delays thanks to COVID-19.

“There’s been tremendous interest locally and all over the country,” she said.

A HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE

Tubman helped around 70 people to freedom, becoming one of the most inspirational and significant activists in American history.

It’s known that she spent a summer in Cape May, perhaps two, working in the resort hotels to raise money to fund her efforts within the Underground Railroad. Tub-

man is also known to have traveled through Cape May at a later date, leading nine former slaves to Canada.

To commemorate her leadership, the museum showcases a large, 2,000 pound, bronze statue, which shows Tubman escorting a young boy to freedom.

“It was just installed last week. We had to disassemble the doors in the back to get it in,” Mullock said. “We’re so grateful to have it back for this summer.”

The building that became the museum was previously the home of the late Reverend Davis, who was the pastor of the Macedonia Baptist Church for 47 years.

It took many years to renovate the former rectory, but now the museum is ready to welcome people who are curious to learn more about Harriet Tubman and the history of Cape May’s Black community.

hen searching out this literature, a hurdle presents itself, as much is unpreserved or unheard of. It falls on human eyes and hands to locate and preserve these texts.

Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage, also known simply as “Recovery,” is an international program set on locating, preserving, and disseminating Hispanic culture of the United States.

Based in Houston, Texas, the project is led by Dr. Lorena Gauthereau, Digital Programs Manager for the U.S. Latino Digital Humanities (USLDH) program housed at Arte Público Press at the University of Houston.

In an interview with AL DÍA, Gauthereau shared some thoughts on the lack of Latinx history and literature shared with her as a child.

GROWING UP ON THE BORDER

She grew up in the small city of Eagle Pass, Texas. Even though it borders the Mexican city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, the setting limited Gauthereau’s exposure to Latinx history.

No bookstore was even established in Eagle Pass until Gauthereau was a teenager.

“I wish I had been exposed to more Latino literature growing up,” she said.

“I can imagine how amazing it would have been to see myself reflected, even in children’s literature, growing up.”

When she finished her undergraduate studies at Rice University, she was unsure what move to make next. The young graduate considered an array of possibilities.

Her thought process shifted when she found Borderlands / La Frontera: The New Mestiza, a book by Gloria E. Anzaldúa, at a local bookstore. It influenced her to pursue a Ph.D. in Mexican American Literature, and later helped

uando uno intenta recuperar la literatura latinx escrita a lo largo de la historia de los Estados Unidos, se presenta un obstáculo: una buena parte no se conserva o es inaudita. Dependerá de nuestros ojos y manos, pues, localizar y preservar estos textos.

El proyecto “Recuperar la Herencia Literaria Hispana de EE.UU”, más conocido como “Recovery” (“Recuperación”), es un programa internacional pensado para localizar, preservar y difundir la cultura hispana de los Estados Unidos.

Con sede en Houston, Texas, el proyecto está dirigido por la Dra. Lorena Gauthereau, Gerente de Programas Digitales para el programa de Humanidades Digitales Latinas de EE.UU (USLDH), dependiente de la editorial Arte Público Press, de la Universidad de Houston.

CULTURA ENGLISH Gauthereau realize a world of written, recorded Latinx history to be recovered.

The book unlocked a passion for Latinx history and border stories within the young Gauthereau.

“The experience of speaking Spanglish all the time, having this culture that is very bicultural and binational, that doesn’t really translate to anywhere else. It’s a unique experience to grow up on the border,” said Gauthereau.

“That really kinda solidified for me that I wanted to go back to school… focus on chicano studies and do more with border literature — in order to really learn about it, but also to teach other people about it,” she continued.

THE IMPORTANCE OF REPRESENTATION IN LITERATURE

Offering diverse representation in literature — especially children’s literature — may enhance a young person’s interaction with reading. Portrayals of Latinx people and other marginalized groups in literature give perspective and voice, in addition to representation, to younger readers.

“I can just imagine if we had an entire curriculum that incorporated literature that actually represented us. We

would’ve engaged with the literature a lot more, and seen ourselves as part of the United States cultural narrative,” she said.

The biggest issue — when it comes to this specific Latinx history — is that much of it is unpreserved or repressed.

“It’s really exciting to find these things, to look through them, and to make them more available because they’re not part of the U.S. historical record,” said Gauthereau. “They’re histories that have been locked out.”

There is a thin barrier between the histories contained in these recovered materials and the possibility of those materials never being reaching the public.

“Recognizing that there’s this incredible survival… you also recognize how important the Latino community has been to the development of history in the United States,” she said.

The recovering and preservation of Latinx literature and histories empowers communities by bringing invaluable attention to lives once lived, but not publicly recorded.

It grants a sense of identity.

“I’ve combined all these interests in a way that is authentic to who I am,” said Gauthereau. “I can be unapologetically chicano, from the border, and share that with people.” z

Nos hubiéramos comprometido mucho más con la literatura y nos hubiéramos visto a nosotros mismos como parte de la narrativa cultural de Estados Unidos”, dijo.

ith businesses opening back up and people going back to work, one of Philly and the country’s most historic theaters is now at the forefront of a toxic work environment controversy, as theater artists continue in their battle against racism and inequity in their industry.

On Friday, June 18, a number theater artists and activists came out to Independence Mall and marched to Walnut Street Theatre in protest, demanding change and that its President and Artistic director, Bernard Havard, step down as unsafe and inequitable behaviors persist in the workplace.

For many years, theater artists warned others about the work environment, where management would harass, bully, and demean many of their employees, especially those identifying as LGBTQ+ or BIPOC. Jenna Pinchbeck, an actor and former employee of the Walnut Street Theatre said she was warned by other theater artists about Harvard when she first started working there “I started to hear rumors about what it’s like to work there and when I got my equity contract I was pulled aside by other female identifying actors that warned me about the workplace environment,’’ Pinchbeck said.

“That if you see something that doesn’t feel right and if you speak up, you’ll probably lose your job. Additionally, I was warned to lock my dressing room door because Havard would enter the dressing rooms without knocking,” she continued.

However, the discussion didn’t stay under wraps for long, and Pinchbeck commented on a post on the theater’s Instagram, posing questions about how it would make itself more safe and equitable for women and BIPOC as reopening plans were announced.

“There’s also the issue that it’s a very white space so a lot of marginalized artists haven’t been given the opportunity to walk through the doors, but the ones that have, there’s a lot of pain there, a lot of things have been said by Bernard that are really harmful, ” Pinchbeck said.

She also said that there was a “scarcity mentality” that the artists are forced to believe is real.

“It creates an environment where people are forced into silence because they are just trying to pay their bills or get a head start in their career, and they feel like the Walnut is a stepping stone,” said Pinchbeck.

PUTTING EQUITY ON THE TABLE

For her comments, Pinchbeck received a cease and desist order from a lawyer representing Havard that claimed she had accused him of crim-

inal activity. It threatened to sue her over defamation.

“Any company should jump at the opportunity to say what they are going to do to make women feel safe to make anyone feel safe,” Pinchbeck said. “But instead they said I had to be quiet or they would sue me and I think that’s very telling. It just goes to show you how they operate.”

This past week, Pinchbeck co-founded Protect the Artist in hopes of gathering more stories of mistreated employees from the Walnut Street Theatre, and to make a change for working theatre artists.

The organization also created a petition for the removal of Havard and hopes it will not only deter other theater artists from supporting, but audience members as well.

“I’ve been collecting testimonials over the past week and I have almost 100 testimonials about what happened in the workplace, I mean, it’s everything from misogyny to racism to fatphobia, transphobia, homophobia,” said Pinchbeck.

Walnut Street Theater is the oldest operated theatre in the U.S., and Havard has been the president for 39 years.

Pinchbeck said that in order for things to change in the work environment, it has to start with a change in leadership.

“We are all artists who care about each other and care about our institutions being safe,” Pinchbeck said. “We need to make this a safer space and in order to do that we need new management, it’s time for new folks to come in and make the space safe.” z

une 19 was the day slavery officially ended in the United States.

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce to still-enslaved Africans that they were free, in accordance with President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation.

Today, 47 states and the District of Columbia observe the date in some way. Texas was the first to officially recognize it as a state holiday in 1980.

BECOMING A FEDERAL HOLIDAY

Despite the growing calls for the date to become a federal holiday, it didn’t happen until 2021.

On Tuesday, June 16, the Senate passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act to finally commemorate the date as a paid national holiday. The House passed it the same day, and President Joe Biden signed it into law a day later on June 17.

ENGLISH Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey introduced it last June, following the massive protests for racial equality sparked by the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, but the bill did not progress to a vote.

Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson blocked the bill in 2020, claiming the day off for federal employees would cost U.S. taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.

However, Johnson dropped his objections this week, paving the way for the bill’s passage in the Senate.

“While it still seems strange that having taxpayers provide federal employees paid time off is now required to celebrate the end of slavery, it is clear that there is no appetite in Congress to further discuss the matter. Therefore, I do not intend to object,” Johnson said in a statement before the vote on June 16.

The Senate passed the bill under a unanimous consent agreement that accelerates the process for considering legislation. To block such agreements, only one senator would have to object.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer applauded the bill’s passage, stating the importance of addressing the wrongs of the past, but pointed out that more work needed to be done to ensure equality, justice and true freedom.

“We must continue to work to ensure equal justice and fulfill the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation and our Constitution,” said Schumer.

Markey agreed with Schumer, saying the U.S. has “failed to acknowledge, address, and come to grips with our nation’s original sin of slavery.”

“Today’s Senate passage of our legislation to commemorate Juneteenth as a federal holiday will address this long-ignored gap in our history, recognize the wrong that was done, acknowledge the pain and suffering of generations of slaves and their descendants, and finally celebrate their freedom,” he said in a statement.

THAT’S ALL?

The bill makes Juneteenth the 12th federal holiday.

Under the legislation, the federal holiday is known as Juneteenth National Independence Day. The Juneteenth bill comes as Congress grapples with legislation to protect the right to vote for marginalized groups, while trying to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to enhance law enforcement accountability.

At the same time, some state legislatures are attempting to ban critical race theory in public school classrooms, leading some citizens to believe that the Juneteenth bill is merely performative.

Some Black Americans took to social media to express their thoughts on the bill.

One user said that the bill exemplified the tired political tradition of performative legislation intended to quiet down the calls for real systemic change.

While the federal recognition of Juneteenth is important and overdue, it feels performative to many Black Americans, considering all of the injustices that remain unaddressed. z

People are hopeful the legislation will particularly assist those affected by poverty, unemployment, and economic hardship.

Demonstrators on June 24 carried signs reading “We Can’t Wait for Jobs” and “We Can’t Wait for Citizenship.” The rally was organized by the Center for Popular Democracy, Unemployed Action, Make the Road, and other national groups. Those involved are calling for lawmakers to act swiftly in enacting the changes required for an equitable economy. z

A RESPONSE TO DIS- AND MISINFORMATION

Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms have taken steps to remove false information from users, reported NBC, however the bulk of conspiracy theories circulate on closed messaging platforms like WhatsApp. In a statement, WhatsApp acknowledged its high Spanish-speaking user base without mention of its past history of misinformation and lack of moderation.

“People of all backgrounds rely on

WhatsApp, though we know WhatsApp plays a particularly strong role with Spanish speaking communities in the United States. This new Spanish-language vaccine finder the CDC developed makes it easy to find a location to get the shot, order a free ride to get there, and get information,” Whatsapp wrote in a statement announcing the partnership with the CDC. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), Latinos continue to lag in vaccination rates compared to white Americans.

It says that as of June 14, 36% of Latinos received at least one vaccine dose compared to 45% of white Americans.

However, rates are on a steady incline.

A SLOW BUILD

Philadelphia City Council gave preliminary approval to a budget deal late on June 17, after a weeks-long battle on how to best address housing, affordability, homelessness, and affordability in the city.

In the budget is $300,000 in funding for PAIFUP, an increase of $100,000 from the previous year.

Despite the 50% increase, the number is nowhere near the sum that richer cities see, like New York City or San Francisco.

For the fiscal year 2021, New York City Council approved $28 million allocated for Immigrant services, including $16.6 million for the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP), the nation’s first public defender system to assist detained immigrants facing deportation proceedings.

With the Pennsylvania state legislature unlikely to put significant dollars to helping immigrant proceedings of this nature, lawyers aren’t expecting that sort of figure in the near future.

For now, PAIFUP is looking forward to a much-needed staffing increase, and to put forward the city’s funding toward transportation to detention centers, interpreters, phone call payment, and more to try to litigate the cases properly. z
