Olivia Richman is a physician committed to helping Latinos improve their physical and mental health.

Her life is the focus of this issue.

Olivia Richman’s life, which has its origins in Cuba, has had obstacles that she has been able to overcome. She is a physician like her mother and ghts for a more diverse and inclusive healthcare system.

Her story is the focus of this issue. It is a life in which she managed to overcome a drawback that, at the time, stopped her goal of graduating as a doctor.

Her greatest trial by re came during the covid-19 pandemic, when circumstances pushed her not to give up. “It was a special experience”, she said.

Precisely, the force of circumstance led her to write down her thoughts to the point that she recently published e river’s Guide to Medical School. “I don’t want any other student to feel alone in their failures. Failure is normal, but we hate to talk about it”, she said.

Added to this is her conviction about the importance of feeling a sense of belonging. But she also wants people to think not only about physical health, but also about mental health. “Why is it that when we have a physical illness we immediately go to the doctor, but when something goes wrong mentally we su er?”, she said.

Even while studying at university, she encountered cases of sexual assault and teenage pregnancy, which prompted her to create a YouTube channel on sexual health and wellness to address taboo topics.

Her commitment to people’s plight has led her to speak at conferences and panels on very useful issues. She created with her boyfriend, who is a mental health therapist, a podcast to talk about relationships and how to overcome problems.

She also told how language and culture in uence the relationship with patients. She experienced this explicitly when she started her residency, when she was the only Latina among 80 % of Spanish-speaking patients. ere she saw the value of connecting in

the same language and sharing a culture. For that reason, today she considers it very important to increase the number of Latino physicians in the United States.

THE CONNECTION WITH GUATEMALA

La vida de Olivia Richman, que tiene sus orígenes en Cuba, ha tenido obstáculos que ha podido superar. Es médico como su madre y lucha por un sistema sanitario más diverso e incluyente.

Su historia es el tema central de esta edición. Es una vida en la cual logró superar un inconveniente que, en su momento, frenó su meta de graduarse como médica.

Su mayor prueba de fuego la vivió durante la pandemia por COVID-19, cuando las circunstancias la impulsaron a no bajar los brazos. “Fue una experiencia especial”, dijo.

Precisamente, la fuerza de las circunstancias la llevaron a ir escribiendo sus pensamientos al punto que publicó recientemente e river’s Guide to Medical School. “No

quiero que ningún otro estudiante se sienta solo en sus fracasos. Fracasar es normal, pero odiamos hablar de ello”, manifestó.

A esto se suma su convicción sobre la importancia de sentir que se pertenece a su entorno. Pero además, busca que no solamente se piense en la salud física, sino también en la salud mental. “¿Por qué cuando tenemos una enfermedad física acudimos inmediatamente al médico, pero cuando algo va mal mentalmente sufrimos?”, señaló.

Incluso, mientras estudiaba en la universidad tuvo contacto con casos de agresiones sexuales y de embarazos de adolescentes, lo que la impulso a crear un canal de YouTube sobre salud y bienestar sexual para abordar temas tabú.

Su compromiso por la situación de la gente la ha llevado a hablar en conferencias y paneles sobre asuntos muy útiles. Creó con su novio, que es terapeuta de salud mental, un podcast para hablar de las relaciones de pareja y de la manera de superar los problemas.

Asimismo, contó cómo el idioma y la cultura in uyen en la relación con los pacientes. Lo vivió explícitamente cuando empezó su residencia, cuando era la única latina en medio del 80 % de los pacientes hispanohablante. Ahí vio el valor de conectarse en el mismo idioma y que se comparta una cultura. Por eso, hoy considera muy importante aumentar el número de médicos latinos en Estados Unidos.

LA CONEXIÓN CON GUATEMALA

En esta edición también está el reportaje con la escritora Ana Reyes, quien debutó como novelista con e House in the Pines, en donde una joven se enfrenta a su pasado guatemalteco. Es una obra que tiene elementos autobiográ cos, a propósito porque el abuelo de la escritora llegó a Estados Unidos procedente de Guatemala.

Philadelphia, like all cities, is supported by a vast, interconnected network of piping.

Maintaining this complex system are swathes of engineers, technicians, and designers, moving the city forward one step at a time.

But like every other job, these skilled professionals don’t just appear out of thin air.

Two organizations have come together to train high-school-aged youths the skills needed to enter the industry — Hopeworks and Rodriguez Consulting — in a joint project named Rodriguez University.

Hopeworks was founded by three churches, they sought to support highschool dropouts by teaching skills in web design and digital development. Based in Camden, NJ, they have recently expanded to Philadelphia, as well.

Rodriguez Consulting is a civil engineering company that works with infrastructure management and geospatial information systems (GIS), or the geographical layouts of infrastructure, such as water and gas piping throughout the city.

It is led by its eponymous founder Lou Rodriguez, who recently became a Hopeworks board member, having been engaged with the organization for over 20 years ago.

is partnership combines Rodriguez’s experience in the infrastructure eld, and Hopeworks’ expertise in training young adults, as well as the initial $100,000 raised through philanthropy to found the program.

“ ere’s so many options for people to go to college and that seems to be the primary way for people to enter the job market,” Rodriguez explained. “ ere weren’t many options for people that didn’t want to go that route. Typically, it was college or the military.”

“I felt that Hopeworks was ful lling a great social need, but even a business need; there [is] a need for these non-degreed professional jobs,” Rodriguez continued.

Rich Negrín was nominated by Governor Josh Shapiro to be Pennsylvania’s rst Latino Secretary of Environmental Protection in history on Jan. 10.

Much like the governor when tapping him as the next secretary of the DEP, Negrín has also sought out some of the best Latino leaders from across Pennsylvania to ll vital posts in the department. DiGiorgio — the daughter of Honduran immigrants to the U.S. — was also not the only statewide Latino leader to get a call from Negrín about a spot in his growing DEP team.

Después de seis años al frente de la organización latina sin ánimo de lucro, en el norte de Filadel a, DiGiorgio dijo que su último día sería el viernes 10 de marzo. Fernando Treviño, a longtime Democratic political consultant based in Philadelphia, was also announced as the new Special Deputy for the O ce of Environmental Justice under the DEP.

“Great teams lead to great results,” Negrín wrote in a comment under a post on LinkedIn about DiGiorgio’s hiring.

Both her and Treviño, while Latino leaders in their own right on the state level, now enter what are likely the two biggest roles of their careers for not just their position in PA government, but more importantly, the work they’ll do preserving Pennsylvania’s environment in the face of an ever-growing threat of climate change in the world.

As Negrín also highlighted on LinkedIN, DiGiorgio will lead “the best and biggest environmental law rm in the Commonwealth.” As chief counsel, she will be tasked with enforcing all of Pennsylvania’s laws that fall within the jurisdiction of PA’s Department of Environmental Protection — rst established in 1970 by Act 275.

e chief counsel’s o ce is split into four di erent units — the Bureau of Regulatory Counsel (based in Harrisburg), Regional O ces (there’s six, along with one headquarters in Harrisburg and 12 district o ces), a General Law Division, and a Bureau of Investigations.

When DiGiorgio started on March 10, the DEP was well into its process of documenting the train derailment that happened near the Pennsylvania border in East Palestine, Ohio that released an unknown amount of toxins into the surrounding community and environment.

In addition to considering legal action, Governor Shapiro also secured more than

This is not Helen Gym’s rst rodeo in the realm of Philadelphia politics, but 2023 is her biggest race to date, as she runs for mayor in 2023.

“I’ve done a lot of major campaigns where there has been a lot at stake, and there’s a lot of uncertainty,” Gym said in a recent interview with AL DÍA News.

All along this campaign trail, she’s been adamant about telling her story. With a support base awash with 18 endorsements, seasoned leadership, and an unwavering base of supporters that have made for political tailwinds, she’s tried to strike a counterweight between delivering her message and setting the record straight amid steep criticism.

In the process, she’s grown into one of the more high-pro le candidates in the race to become the next mayor — the 100th in Philly history.

Well before the current battle, Gym also battled it out in city council in what seemed, from the outside looking in, like a follow-up of the work she engaged with in staunch defense of Philly schools for the last 20 years.

“I think a lot of people thought that this activist, teacher, you know, organizer type might not be well suited for a liate politics,” Gym said.

“But it turns out that those kinds of skill sets that we learn in communities when a lot of elected o cials or people with a lot of power and title kind of ran and scattered. e people who stood in their place were parents or residents,” she continued.

STILL FIGHTING “LIKE HELL” FOR SCHOOLS

at battle has taken a new form in 2023, as the city looks to the state for new ways to fund its schools following a major ruling earlier this year that ruled PA’s process of funding was unconstitutional.

“I expect that we are going to ght like hell to see a lot more money come through and that that should be a united front,” Gym declared.

Mucho antes de la batalla actual, Gym también luchó en el Ayuntamiento, en lo que parecía, desde fuera, una continuación del trabajo que había realizado en defensa de las escuelas de Filadel a durante los últimos 20 años. “Creo que mucha gente pensó que este tipo de activista, profesor, organizador, podría no ser adecuado para la política de aliado. Pero resulta que ese tipo de habilidades son las que aprendemos en las comunidades cuando los funcionarios electos o personas con mucho poder y título huyen y se dispersan. Los padres o los residentes terminan ocupando su lugar”, dice Gym.

SIGUE LUCHANDO POR LAS ESCUELAS

Esa batalla ha tomado una nueva forma en el 2023, ya que la ciudad busca en el Estado nuevas maneras de nanciar sus escuelas, tras una importante sentencia a principios de este año que dictaminó que el proceso de nanciación en Filadel a era inconstitucional. “Espero que luchemos como locos para que llegue mucho más dinero y que ese sea un frente unido”, declaró Gym.

A by-product of that fraught relationship is a pending $485 million debt by 2027.

“I don’t see that as debt,” said Gym, “because if you see it as debt, if you see it as burdens, then you’ll never invest.”

An “investment-based approach,” Gym explained, means welcoming the superintendent to become “a lead part of the mayor’s cabinet and vice versa, because I do want the city and the school systems to be united and to be held accountable for one another.”

“I believe I’m the only candidate that really understands how to make that an actual investment and convert it into a signi cant

amount of private, state, federal, and local support for our youth and to grow our city.”

REORIENTING PUBLIC SAFETY

Gym has yet to release her public safety agenda in full but made clear in AL DÍA Talks that it is top of mind for the campaign.

Still, on the campaign trail, she has oated a targeted approach to the city’s most a ected-blocks and reduced 911 response times. On day one, Gym plans to summon department heads from di erent areas of

Since Olivia Richman’s grandparents emigrated from Cuba decades ago, education has been a priority for them. Her mother was the rst in the family to graduate from elementary school and go on to higher education to become a doctor.

Richman followed her footsteps in medical school, a dream that became a nightmare when she was dismissed from the program for failing the nal practice exam —the last one in order to graduate— right before covid hit.

Feeling lost and confused, Richman started working at one covid hotel in New York City, when hospitals started getting full. At the time, there were 80 patients and her mother was the only doctor and she was the only medical student. It was intense, but ultimately a life-changing opportunity as she was working side by side with her greatest inspiration in the height of the pandemic. Richman was nally able to reconnect with medicine.

“It was a very unique, special, one of a kind bonding experience with my mom,” she said.

She eventually got another chance to complete her nal exam, which she successfully did, and is now a Family Medicine Physician.

Over the years and throughout her experiences, Richman understood that there are many ways in which she can help others besides medicine. Committed to making quiet conversations loud, she engaged in di erent career pathways aiming to share all the knowledge she has acquired and assist others not only physically, but mentally.

SPREADING KNOWLEDGE

As a third-year medical student in 2017, Richman used to work as part of her rotation in Brooklyn and Staten Island. ere, she had contact with many cases of teen pregnancies, sexual assault, and lack of knowledge about the feminine body from girls coming in for help.

When she saw all that, Richman thought to herself about ways she could impact those girls outside of the medical facility. She decided to start a YouTube channel about sexual health and wellness, focusing on taboo topics. Aiming to talk about silenced conversations, she explains about masturbation, sex, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and more. She has always known that edu-

cation on these topics are important because she grew up with her mom talking about it.

“She [her mom] wanted daughters who were empowered to make their own decisions,” Richman said.

She has already given two TEDx Talks on the topic of sex education in the country, and how it still is a taboo in most cultures — especially in the Latino one.

EMPOWERING OTHERS

When Richman was dismissed from medical school, her coping mechanism to deal with all her thoughts was journaling. Feeling like she needed to get all the emo-

tions she was feeling out onto a page, those random excerpts eventually became the rst dra of her now published book e river’s Guide to Medical School (New Degree Press, January 2022).

In a collection of personal life stories about relationships and breakups, body image, mental state, passion and purpose, and more; Richman shares her most vulnerable self so others who are going through a dicult time can identify with.

“I don’t want any other student to feel like they are alone in their failures,” Richman added. “Failure is normal but we hate talking about it.”

While having to deal with her own insecure thoughts, she remembers thinking to herself that there must be other medical students su ering in silence. e book came to be a safe space for people who ever felt alone in their hardships to come together.

Oftentimes during her education career, Richman experienced impostor syndrome. “You feel di erent, people aren’t like you,” she said. “You feel like an outsider.”

“Why when we have a physical illness we immediately go to a doctor, but when something is wrong mentally we su er,” she said. “Why arent we talking more about mental wellness as much as we are talking about physical wellness?”

Looking for more ways to empower other students, Richman started speaking at conferences and panels. One of the most memorable for her was for the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) held last January in Baltimore. She didn’t even nish her slides presentation because people from the audience started sharing their experiences with anxiety and depression in school. It was a one of a kind experience in which she felt truly connected with the listeners.

At the end of her lecture, a group of young students waited for her outside the room to ask more questions, learn more about her book, get her contact information and share experiences about the harsh realities of being a medical student. At that moment, Olivia was the closest thing to a rock star.

Adding to her long list of initiatives, Richman and her ance (who is a mental health therapist) started a podcast about relationships to talk about their arguments — in a not a perfect way. She wants to show couples that it is possible to go through their problems in a civilized way.

FINDING HER PEOPLE

Growing up in a non-diverse area in northern New Jersey, Richman never realized something was missing until she went to college in 2007. Although she felt that she couldn’t truly connect with anybody in high school, it was when she moved to Washington D.C. — to attend e George Washington University — that she nally found her group of people and understood her feelings.

As an undergraduate, she was able to engage with the Black and Hispanic communities of her new town. ey connected through cultural aspects such as going out dancing, listening to reggaeton and speaking Spanish — something she felt her friends from back home couldn’t understand.

“If you feel like an outsider, like I did, there is a reason,” she said.

However, in medical school, it hit again: she was the minority.

When she started her residency in 2021, Richman was the only Latina but the patients’ population she served was 80% Span-

ish speakers. e same language and culture played a role once again allowing her to connect and bond with the patients in ways others couldn’t.

“Patients feel grateful to be able to connect with you,” she said. “It’s di erent when people communicate in real time in the same language.”

MORE LATINO DOCTORS

Usually when there is a language barrier between the patient and the doctor, there is a translation phone line for them to understand each other. Besides presenting technological di culties o en, this method also lacks empathy, Richman said.

Considering that the U.S. Hispanic population reached more than 62 million in 2021 — according to Pew Research Center — Richman believes that if we want to impact this community, there needs to be an intentional e ort to increase the number of Latinx doctors in the country.

“When you hear someone in the language that they are speaking, they know they are being cared for,” she said. “I think half of being healthy and healing, it’s not only medicine, it really is just being connected with your patients.”

She advocates for the importance of feeling like you belong when around your people — something she didn’t have in high school,

for example. A more inclusive and diverse health system is what Richman expects — and will keep working — for the future.

“I want to empower people and speak more,” she said. “I want to create more health and wellness in the world, and not just in the traditional medical sense.” z

Richman’s secret to do everything she does is: organization. If something is on her schedule, it’s happening. She likes pushing herself and being intentional with her time. “If I can spend hours on social media, I can do something productive,” she said.

Desde que los abuelos de Olivia Richman emigraron de Cuba hace décadas, la educación ha sido una prioridad para ellos. Su madre fue la primera de la familia en graduarse en la escuela primaria y cursar estudios superiores para convertirse en médica.

Richman siguió sus pasos en la Facultad de Medicina, un sueño que se convirtió en pesadilla cuando fue expulsada del programa por suspender el examen nal de prácticas, el último para poder graduarse, justo antes de que llegara el covid.

Perdida y confundida, Richman empezó a trabajar en un hotel covid de Nueva York, cuando los hospitales empezaron a llenarse. En aquel momento, había 80 pacientes, su madre era la única doctora y ella era la única estudiante de medicina. Fue intenso, pero terminó siendo la oportunidad que le cambió la vida, pues estaba

trabajando codo a codo con su mayor inspiración, en el punto álgido de la pandemia. Así pudo volver a conectarse con la medicina. “Fue una experiencia especial, única en su género, que me unió a mi madre”, a rmó Richman.

Dados los acontecimientos, tuvo otra oportunidad de hacer el examen nal, que superó con éxito. Ahora es médica de familia.

DIFUNDIR CONOCIMIENTOS

Como estudiante de medicina de tercer año en el 2017, Richman solía trabajar como parte de su rotación en Brooklyn y Staten Island. Allí tuvo contacto con muchos casos de embarazos de adolescentes, agresiones sexuales y desconocimiento del cuerpo femenino por parte de las chicas que acudían en busca de ayuda.

Cuando vio todo eso, pensó en formas de in uir en ellas fuera del centro médico. Como resultado, decidió crear un canal de YouTube sobre salud y bienestar sexual, centrado en temas tabú como la masturbación, el sexo y las enfermedades de transmisión sexual.

Siempre ha estado consciente sobre la importancia de la educación al respecto porque

creció con su madre hablando de ello. “Ella quería hijas capaces de tomar sus propias decisiones”, contó Richman.

Ya ha dado dos charlas TED sobre educación sexual en el país y cómo sigue siendo un tabú en la mayoría de las culturas, especialmente en la latina.

EMPODERAR A OTROS

Cuando Richman fue expulsada de la Facultad de Medicina, su mecanismo para hacer frente a todos sus pensamientos fue escribir un diario. Sentía que necesitaba plasmar en una página todas las emociones que sentía. Esos extractos aleatorios acabaron convirtiéndose en el primer borrador de su libro, ahora publicado, e river’s Guide to Medical School (New Degree Press, enero del 2022).

Es una colección de historias de vida personales sobre relaciones y rupturas, imagen corporal, estado mental, pasión y propósito, entre muchos otros temas. Olivia Richman comparte su yo más vulnerable para que otros que estén pasando por un momento difícil puedan identi carse con ella. “No quiero que ningún otro estudiante se sienta solo en sus fracasos. Fracasar es normal, pero odiamos hablar de ello”, dijo.

Mientras tenía que lidiar con sus propios pensamientos de inseguridad, recuerda que pensaba para sí misma que debía de haber otros estudiantes de medicina sufriendo en silencio. El libro vino a ser un espacio seguro para que las personas que alguna vez se sintieron solas en sus penurias se reunieran.

“¿Por qué cuando tenemos una enfermedad física acudimos inmediatamente al médico, pero cuando algo va mal mentalmente sufrimos? ¿Por qué no hablamos de bienestar mental tanto como hablamos de bienestar físico?”, se preguntó.

El secreto de Richman para hacer todo lo que hace es organización. Si algo está en su agenda, es que está sucediendo. Le gusta esforzarse y ser consciente de su tiempo. “Si puedo pasar horas en las redes sociales, puedo hacer algo productivo”, señaló.

Buscando más formas de empoderar a otros estudiantes, empezó a hablar en conferencias y paneles. Una de las más memorables para ella fue la de la Asociación de Estudiantes de Medicina Latinos, en Baltimore.

Ni siquiera terminó su presentación de diapositivas porque el público comenzó a compartir sus experiencias con la ansiedad y la depre-

sión en la escuela. La conexión que sintió con los oyentes hizo de la experiencia algo único.

Al nal de su conferencia, un grupo de jóvenes estudiantes la esperaba fuera de la sala para hacerle más preguntas, saber más sobre su libro, obtener su información de contacto y compartir experiencias sobre la dura realidad de ser estudiante de medicina. En ese momen-

to, Olivia Richman era lo más parecido a una estrella del rock.

Sumándose a su larga lista de iniciativas, ella y su prometido, terapeuta de salud mental, empezaron un podcast sobre relaciones para hablar de sus discusiones, de una forma no perfecta. Ella quiere demostrarles a las parejas que es posible superar sus problemas de forma civilizada.

ENCONTRAR A SU GENTE

Richman, que creció en una zona poco diversa del norte de Nueva Jersey, no se dio cuenta de que le faltaba algo hasta que fue a la universidad, en el 2007. Aunque en el instituto sentía que no podía conectar de verdad con nadie, cuando se mudó a Washington D.C. —para asistir a e George Washington University— por n encontró a su grupo de gente y comprendió sus sentimientos.

Como estudiante universitaria, pudo relacionarse con las comunidades negra e hispana de su nueva ciudad. Conectaron a través de aspectos culturales como salir a bailar, escuchar reguetón y hablar español, algo que ella sentía que sus amigos de casa no podían entender.

“Si te sientes como un extraño, como me sentía yo, es por algo”, manifestó Richman. En la Facultad de Medicina, de nuevo se dio cuenta de que ella era la minoría.

Cuando empezó su residencia en el 2021, era la única latina, pero la población de pacientes a los que atendía era 80 % hispanohablante. El idioma y la cultura in uyeron una vez más, permitiéndole conectarse y vincularse con los pacientes de un modo que otros no podían. “Los pacientes se sienten agradecidos de poder conectar contigo. Es diferente cuando la gente se comunica en tiempo real, en el mismo idioma”, a rmó.

MÁS MÉDICOS LATINOS

Normalmente, cuando existe una barrera lingüística entre el paciente y el médico, hay una línea telefónica de traducción para que puedan entenderse. Sin embargo, este método no solo presenta di cultades tecnológicas, sino también carece de empatía, dijo Richman.

Teniendo en cuenta que la población hispana de Estados Unidos alcanzó más de 62 millones en el 2021, según Pew Research Center, Richman cree que si se quiere impactar a esta comunidad, tiene que haber un esfuerzo intencional para aumentar el número de médicos latinos en el país.

Por eso, manifestó que “cuando escuchas a alguien en el idioma que hablas, sabes que estás siendo atendido. Creo que gran parte de estar sano y curarse es estar conectado con tus pacientes”.

Richman de ende la importancia de sentir que uno pertenece a su entorno, algo que ella no tuvo en el instituto. Un sistema sanitario más inclusivo y diverso es lo que ella espera y por lo que seguirá trabajando para el futuro.

“Quiero empoderar a la gente para que hable más. Quiero crear más salud y bienestar en el mundo, y no solo en el sentido médico tradicional”, dijo.z

(...) out of the blue our President kicks against the Democratic government and gives his support to the Republican Party where it is stated, repeatedly, that the solution to drugs is to invade us. Two weeks ago, he threatened to call on our countrymen to vote against Republican candidates. Now he closes ranks with the presidential pre-candidate of that party. What is our President doing involved in the internal political problems of the United States, taking sides, insulting and stoning the house of his neighbor?

In his commentary, José Andrés Rojo refers to the anniversary of the war in Iraq. “Twenty years ago, U.S. President George W. Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq to liquidate Saddam Hussein’s regime. He did so with the excuse, which he presented to the United Nations Security Council, that the country had weapons of mass destruction. The idea was to put an end to a bloodthirsty dictatorship as soon as possible and establish the first Arab democracy. Six weeks later, Bush claimed to have achieved his goal. It was not. The war dragged on for eight years, more than 500,000 Iraqis died and seven million were displaced. What happened during that catastrophic period, and what came after, is part of one of the darkest chronicles that still hangs over the history of the West. The crimes and tortures of Abu Ghraib prison are an ignominy di cult to erase (...) Later, the Islamic State and its machinery of terror emerged and struck like a furious and wounded beast in many parts of the world. That area was a hell”.

Ana Reyes’ grandfather came to the U.S. from Guatemala as part of a program to bring more skilled workers to the U.S. “He was a bootmaker, made beautiful boots out of leather and snakeskin, and was able to buy a house and support his family this way”, she explained in a recent interview with AL DÍA. As a second generation Latina (his father was 11 when he arrived in the US), Reyes is proud to say that her Hispanic origins “are a well-spring of inspiration for me as a writer, as I o en feature Latino characters and aspects of our culture”.

at’s exactly what she did in e House in the Pines, her debut novel, starring Maya, a young Latina woman from Massachusetts trying to nd out the enigmatic death of his high school friend, Aubrey, seven years ago. e investigation leads her to her mother’s house, where she excavates fragments of her past and notices hidden messages in her deceased Guatemalan father’s book that didn’t stand out to her earlier.

“Maya’s father’s book was never nished because he was killed at the end of the Guatemalan from her father’s book she’s been given are the closest she’ll ever get to talking to him so Civil War. She lost him before she was born, and his absence a ects her profoundly. e pages they’re important to her. But she can’t quite tell what his story was about, or what he’d been trying to say”, Reyes explained.

It’s not until she begins investigating Frank’s death that she begins to see a similarity between a mountain village in her father’s book and a strange house Frank built in the woods. e clue is metaphorical and buried deep but if she can understand it, she’ll understand the danger she’s in with Frank and know how to ght it.

“To save herself, in other words, Maya must understand a story written before she was born, which, for me, symbolizes inherited trauma”, Reyes explained. “So many people are a ected by events (wars, colonization) that occurred not just before they were born, but in places they’ve never been. For Maya, this is true in a literal sense”, the author added.

IDENTITY ISSUES

An avid reader as a child, Reyes didn’t nd out she wanted to be a writer, or at least to take her writing more seriously, until she was in her late twenties, when she applied to an MFA program in Louisiana State University and began to work on what eventually would become e House in the Pines.

Y eso es exactamente lo que ha hecho en e House in the Pines, su novela debut, un thriller protagonizado por Maya, una joven latina de Massachusetts que intenta averiguar la enigmática muerte de su amiga del instituto, Aubrey, siete años atrás. La investigación la lleva a casa de su madre, donde excava fragmentos de su pasado y advierte mensajes ocultos en

el libro de su difunto padre guatemalteco, que antes no le llamaban la atención.

“El padre de Maya nunca terminó el libro porque lo mataron al nal de la guerra civil guatemalteca. Murió antes de que naciera y su ausencia la afecta profundamente. Las páginas del libro de su padre son lo más cerca que estará de hablar con él, así que son importantes para ella. Pero no sabe muy bien de qué iba su historia ni qué intentaba decirle”, explicó Reyes.

No es hasta que empieza a investigar la muerte de Frank cuando Maya empieza a ver similitudes entre un pueblo de montaña que aparece en el libro de su padre y una extraña casa que Frank construyó en el bosque. La pista es metafórica y está enterrada en lo más profundo, pero si consigue entenderla, comprenderá el peligro que corre con Frank y sabrá cómo combatirlo.

“Para salvarse, en otras palabras, Maya debe entender una historia escrita antes de que ella naciera, lo que, para mí, simboliza

el trauma heredado”, explica Reyes. “Hay muchas personas que se ven afectadas por acontecimientos (guerras, colonización) que ocurrieron, no sólo antes de que nacieran, sino en lugares en los que nunca han estado. Para Maya, esto es cierto en un sentido literal”, añadió la autora.

CUESTIONES DE IDENTIDAD

Ávida lectora de niña, Reyes no se dio cuenta de que quería ser escritora, o al menos que quería tomarse su escritura más en serio, hasta los veinte años, cuando solicitó plaza en un M.F.A de la Universidad Estatal de Luisiana y empezó a trabajar en lo que acabaría convirtiéndose en e House in the Pines.

and R.L. Stine. And as I got older, it felt natural to write that type of story though it took me a while to learn the tropes and put them into practice in my own writing”, she said.

In addition to the thriller component, the book focuses on identity issues. “Growing up in Massachusetts with a white mother, Maya isn’t very connected to her family in Guatemala. Part of her journey is about discovering and understanding that part of her family and heritage”, Reyes said.

e novel also has autobiographical elements. Like Maya, Reyes was going through Klonopin withdrawal when she started writing e House in the Pines. (Klonopin is a commercial brand of Clonazepam, a medication used to prevent and treat seizures, panic disorder, anxiety disorders).

“Writing about Klonopin withdrawal allowed me to distance myself from the experience and a orded me perspective. e compassion I had for Maya helped me have compassion for myself”, she explained.

Based in Los Angeles, Reyes used to teach memoir writing to older adults at Santa Monica College, where she had several Latino students. However, what she noticed most was that, despite the di erent origins of their students, they all tend to share certain themes: love, loss, parents, children, siblings and friends, love and its lack, change, laughter, and death.

“ is was true for students from Iran, Australia, the San Fernando Valley, and many other places, and has helped me think about what’s important to me too”, she said.

Growing up, Reyes didn’t speak Spanish at home, but she spoke it whenever she visited her grandparents and has worked to become more uent as an adult, she assures. She wrote e House in the Pines in English, but she will soon see a dream come true, since the novel has been acquired by the Spanish publisher Roca editorial. “ is is incredibly meaningful to me because it means that my family in Guatemala will be able to read my book”, she concluded. z

“Black, poor and gay”. at’s the description Malcolm Kenyatta once gave of himself, a politician raised in violence-ridden North Philadelphia, where per capita income is less than 10,000 dollars a year.

Motivated by the inequality he felt as a child, the Temple University graduate became actively involved in the public a airs of his community and took his rst steps in politics. He became the rst openly LGBTQ person of color to win a seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2018. In 2019, he represented Harrisburg’s 181st District and became a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2022.

From his position, he has supported a progressive agenda that has included more rights and support for the most overlooked sectors of his district.

Aware of Malcolm’s struggle against an entire racist and classist political system, Philadelphia lmmaker Timothy Harris has decided to bring to the big screen the life of a person he knows very well. Pursuing the answer to the question: what does it mean to be an eligible person in the United States, the director presents the lm Kenyatta: Do Not Wait Your Turn.

“His story needs to be told, because there has never been a candidate like Malcolm in the United States. I believe he is the rst ever openly gay person of color to be on the US Senate ballot in American history and so that’s certainly a story worth-telling and showing kind of the challenges that he was up against being from a marginalized community”, Harris told AL DÍA.

BEYOND A ‘POLITICAL’ FILM

In his production, Harris aims to convey to the viewer that combination of feelings that accompanied Kenyatta throughout his campaign in the Democratic primaries: from the hope to o er “a new day” to voters, his expectations, his fears, his doubts, his deep frustration to obtain funding in the face of poll results that sunk him, to his emotions a er experiencing defeat.

“I hope that people watch it and kind of see that the money in politics feeds the media coverage, which then feeds name recognition which feeds pulling it is kind of all of this cycle that really starts with accessibility, and if you’re kind of running for the rst time, it’s really hard for new people to breakthrough in and be elected to o ce in America”, he added.

In Kenyatta: Do Not Wait Your Turn, the lmmaker also takes pains to strip down the person behind the public persona and capture closer moments at the side of Matthew Kenyatta, whom the politician married a few months before the election.

“ e public should expect a story that’s upli ing, inspiring, frustrating, and heartfelt all at the same time. Malcolm is an incredibly charismatic and inspiring person, but the process during this election was not easy for him, and so I think you are going to see the struggles he had to go through but also, it was a really fun time to catch a really important moment in his personal life. So, it’s not just a political lm. It’s also kind of a love story, it’s kind of a coming-of-age story, and it’s an inside look at how hard it is to get elected in America if you’re not a straight white man”.

e world premiere of Harris’ documentary took place, most recently, at the BFI Flare festival: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival. Originally from Mexico, Valentina Wey grew up in South Texas by the border. Daughter to a Mexican mother and an American father, she was raised understanding the complexities of both cultures.

Wey was in high school during the Trump administration—a time her teachers used to compel the high schooler to educate herself on the policies that a ect immigrants like herself.

Referencing her hometown, McAllen had a “zero tolerance” immigration policy where families crossing the border illegally were separated, prompting her involvement in immigration justice and her academic journey at Villanova University.

“I wanted to be able to give back to other immigrant communities who weren’t as fortunate as I was to be able to come to the U.S. and not be hated for it,” said Wey, who volunteered with di erent nonpro t organizations and interned with VU’s law school pro-bono cases interpreting for the Latin American clients for a year.

Valentina is majoring in Cultural Studies with double minors in Arabic Language and Culture and Latin American Studies because it would allow her to understand how people think and where they come from. Also, the disparities in policies depend on the region—something she wants to learn how to address.

Wey is already uent in Spanish and wanted to choose a language widely spoken in di erent countries. Arabic, a language she feels will give her that opportunity—a connection only achieved through the power of language—belonging and acceptance that allows for open dialogue and the continuation of building trust among that community.

e Latin American studies minor is to keep herself informed about the ever-changing situations, something she says is a lifelong journey of active learning.

A voyage she almost embarked on to Jordan, but the COVID-19 pandemic a ected those plans. However, she traveled to Cyprus and had exposure to a di erent culture.

Originaria de México, Valentina Wey vivió en el sur de Texas, junto a la frontera. Hija de madre mexicana y padre estadounidense, creció comprendiendo las complejidades de ambas culturas.

Wey estaba en la escuela secundaria durante la administración Trump, un tiempo que sus maestros utilizaron para obligarla a educarse sobre las políticas que afectan a los inmigrantes como ella.

Haciendo referencia a su ciudad natal, McAllen tenía una política de inmigración de “tolerancia cero”, según la cual las familias que cruzaban la frontera ilegalmente eran separadas, lo que motivó su implicación en la justicia de inmigración y su trayectoria académica en la Universidad de Villanova.

La asignatura de Estudios Latinoamericanos le sirve para mantenerse informada sobre las situaciones siempre cambiantes, algo que considera un viaje de aprendizaje activo que dura toda la vida.

Estuvo a punto de embarcarse en un viaje a Jordania, pero la pandemia de covid-19 afectó a esos planes. Sin embargo, viajó a Chipre y conoció una cultura diferente. Explica que, aunque no viaje a Oriente Próximo, es su ciente “el

Valentina hopes to travel to the Middle East and practice her Arabic language skills.

She explains that even if she does not travel to the Middle East, “just being able to interact with people who speak Arabic and Spanish, and serving them, in a language that they are comfortable with and understand,” is enough for her.

CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT

Valentina’s involvement with VU Pride (LGBTQ+ student group) started freshman year, but queer people of color didn’t want to get involved because it was a “white space.”

She took time to foster relationships with queer people of color and eventually made the club o cial, the Queer People of Color (QTPOC), a space to nd community on campus.

Valentina is also involved with Campus Ministry, Levantate, which provides Spanish masses on campus—something she was involved in Texas. She had a small partnership between the Hispanic Ministry organization and VU Pride for the day of the dead, where they had a place for queer people who had died and contributed to the queer community.

THESIS: MEXICAN OPPRESSION AND IMMIGRATION

A er taking a course in Southern Mexico and reading a compilation of essays, Wey

was fascinated by an indigenous Mexican essay and learned that in Mexico, what dictates if you are indigenous is your ability to speak an indigenous language.

She shares, “Mexicans were forced, categorized in the past. It is impacting. So how we choose to identify and feel capable enough of identifying— I wonder how that is in the Mexican-American community.”

Valentina is still exploring identity concepts in California and Texas Mexican-American populations. However, she will explore Mexican descendants who identify as Mexican or Mexican American and why they identify as such. In other cases, Mexican descendants identify as Hispanic, which she will be researching more about.

ADVICE FOR STUDENTS

Her advice for students is to get involved and not be afraid of asking questions that might seem “silly” because fear kept her from seeking help regarding career choices.

She soon learned the importance of joining clubs and organizations and getting a job in di erent o ces on campus. And an opportunity that allowed Wey to apply to the Villanova Public Administration graduate program with the intent of working in nonpro t management, contributing to immigration reform.z

TESIS: OPRESIÓN MEXICANA E INMIGRACIÓN

Tras asistir a un curso sobre el sur de México y leer una recopilación de ensayos, Wey quedó fascinada con uno sobre indígenas mexicanos y aprendió que en México lo que dicta si eres indígena es tu capacidad para hablar una lengua indígena.

“Los mexicanos fueron forzados y categorizados en el pasado. Es impactante. Así que mi pregunta es cómo elegimos identi carnos y sentirnos lo su cientemente capaces de identi carnos en la comunidad mexicano estadounidense”, señaló.

Valentina sigue explorando los conceptos de identidad en las poblaciones mexicano estadounidenses de California y Texas, pero también investigará sobre los descendientes de mexicanos que se identi can como mexicanos o mexicano estadounidenses y por qué lo hacen. En otros casos, los descendientes de mexicanos se identi can como hispanos, sobre lo que investigará más.

CONSEJOS PARA LOS ESTUDIANTES

Su consejo para los estudiantes es que se involucren y no tengan miedo de hacer preguntas que puedan parecer “tontas”, porque el miedo les impide buscar ayuda para elegir su carrera.

As a physician, I cannot emphasize the importance of preventative care in the Hispanic community enough. It is a well-known fact that Hispanics in the United States are disproportionately a ected by chronic conditions such as pre-diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. By adopting a preventative approach to healthcare, we can signi cantly decrease the risk of these conditions and improve the overall quality of life for Hispanic individuals.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the top 10 leading causes of death for Hispanics in the United States include heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries, stroke, diabetes, chronic lower respiratory diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney disease, in uenza and pneumonia, and suicide. Many of these conditions can be directly linked to lifestyle choices, which makes preventative care all the more critical.

One of the barriers to accessing preventative care in the Hispanic community is the lack of culturally sensitive healthcare services. Healthcare providers must recognize and address cultural and language differences to ensure Hispanic patients receive the appropriate care. Bilingual healthcare providers, culturally competent health education materials, and community-based programs can help bridge the gap and improve health outcomes for the Hispanic population.

An essential aspect of preventative care for Hispanics is raising awareness about the importance of health education. Knowledge about chronic diseases, their risk factors, and ways to prevent them can empower individuals to take control of their health. By their very nature, colleges and universities serve to bring together people from di erent cultures and backgrounds as one community. At their best, campus communities build a strong sense of unity that empowers students to apply their education in the broader world to make a transformative impact. Higher education is ideally positioned to elicit positive effects. Catholic universities are at the heart of leading that change. Sha k (2021) describes the value proposition well by noting, “We need a social contract that … is less about ‘me’ and more about ‘we’.”

While many faith-based and non-faithbased schools have experienced mergers, closures, and acquisitions, the shrinking landscape highlights the importance of the higher education opportunities available that focus on faith-based values—for those with religious a liations as well as those without. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2019 there were approximately 250 Catholic institutions of higher education in the United States, enrolling 700,000 students in the 2019-20 academic year. Of those students, 46.7% identi ed as Roman Catholic in the 2019 Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) Freshmen Survey—which demonstrates that students of all faiths are nding their place at these institutions.

With today’s college students facing information overload and diminished personal interactions in part as a result of the pandemic, the values-driven focus of a Catholic university has broad appeal for anyone looking to develop job-ready knowledge in the context of re ection and service, centered on human connection. Catholic universities provide educational excellence while ensuring that the outcome is holistic by preparing students to become contributors in life. e focus on core values in the Catholic tradition inspires personal growth and speaks to all individuals, across all religions, and to those who do not practice any religion.

In the classroom, students learn from one another through dialogue, analysis,

and discovery, introducing them to areas where they can make a di erence and enact change. Taking care of the community and those in need is a mainstay of Catholic teachings. Catholic universities are uniquely positioned to elevate that messaging and action as part of a commitment to social justice to ful ll our daily responsibilities to family, community, and ourselves. And as noted by Busteed (2022), universities must “create intentional and scalable initiatives to improve career readiness and outcomes for students” arming them with skills for the workforce. Values-based institutions are particularly focused on this area by asking students to employ critical thinking, service-learning, and team-building through experiential opportunities.

ese values are ingrained in the fabric of many faith-based colleges that adopt a broader responsibility to care for the world. e appeal of a mission that is centered on the dignity of the human person is far-reaching, particularly at a time when inclusivity, equity, and equality continue to be called into question. e ability to access quality, a ordable education that matches one’s values is essential.

When we start with recognition of the dignity of one another, we can work together to achieve greatness. At the heart of Catholic higher education is the idea of creating a welcoming and sacred space for all. At a time when gun violence and high crime are an everyday occurrence, never has this notion been more relevant and necessary, and never have faith-based institutions of higher learning been timelier and more relevant in helping to create the next generation of leaders who enter the workforce and their communities with a sense of personal responsibility for creating a better world.z
