he cover, the central story and each one of the informative pages of this issue are dedicated to women in and outside the nation who have had an impact on society from different fronts.

Women of Merit, by AL DÍA pays tribute to outstanding leaders that seek to offer a better life from innovation, talent and service. In this issue, an overview on Shannon Morales and Sharmain Matlock-Turner’s lives, who stand out in the region from their respective industries. Shannon was awarded by AL DÍA the distinction Emerging Leader, and Sharmain was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement.

Shannon Morales, who was born in northern New Jersey, recounts that since she was a child she felt that she “learned at a very young age just how to be competitive and how to achieve things,” she “was very accomplishment driven.”

Since 2020, she has been a full-time entrepreneur.

She started that path when an opportunity to be an innovation manager and entrepreneur presented itself. She focused on finding tech companies to change the status quo, and opened the doors for diverse talent to tech spaces.

Sharmain Matlock-Turner is from Charlottesville (Virginia), but she moved to Philadelphia when she was still a child. She was the first woman to be the executive leader in Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC). The organization is committed to strengthening nonprofits, building wealth in urban communities, developing youth and young adults, and creating strategic partnerships.

Like them, other women that have forged their own names are in the list of outstanding leaders in Women of Merit by AL DÍA 2022.

In this issue, we commemorate Gabriela Mistral, the Chilean writer who was the first Latin American figure to be awarded the Nobel Literature Prize; and Carmen Balcells, the agent that represented the most prominent writers of the Latin American Boom, like Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Also the story of Dr. Lupita Hinojosa, an experienced education leader, and the first Hispanic Spring ISD superintendent of schools, which serves more than 33,000 students in a diverse community, where 49% are Hispanic and Latin, and 44% are Black.

A través de ‘Mujeres de Mérito’, AL DÍA rinde homenaje a esos liderazgos sobresalientes que procuran una vida mejor desde la innovación, el talento y el servicio. En esta edición se reseña la vida de Shannon Morales y Sharmain Matlock-Turner, que desde diferentes ámbitos sobresalen en la región. A Shannon, AL DÍA la reconoció con el galardón ‘Líder en ascenso’ y a Sharmain con ‘Una vida de logros’.

Shannon Morales nació en el norte de Nueva Jersey cuenta que desde niña sentía que “había aprendido a ser competitiva y a cómo lograr cosas; me impulsaba el deseo de tener logros”. Desde el 2020 es una emprendedora de tiempo completo. Encontró ese camino en una oportunidad para ser gerente de innovación y emprendedora corporativa. Se dedicó a encontrar compañías tecnológicas para cambiar el statu quo y les abrió las puertas a talentos diverso a los espacios tecnológicos.

Por su parte, Sharmain Matlock-Turner es de Charlottesville (Virginia), pero llegó de niña a Filadelfia. Fue la primera mujer que ocupó el liderazgo ejecutivo en Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC). La organización tiene el compromiso de fortalecer las organizaciones sin fines de lucro, generar riqueza en comunidades urbanas, desarrollar a los jóvenes y adultos jóvenes y crear alianzas estratégicas.

Como ellas, otras mujeres, con nombre propio, hacen parte de la selección de liderazgos sobresalientes de ‘Mujeres de Mérito’ de AL DÍA 2022.

En esta edición se recuerda a Gabriela Mistral, la escritora chilena, la primera figura latinoamericana reconocida con el Premio Nobel de Literatura. También se reconoce la memoria de Carmen Balcells, la agente literaria que representó a los escritores más destacados del ‘Boom latinoamericano’, como Gabriel García Márquez.

También se cuenta la historia de la doctora Lupita Hinojosa, experimentada líder en educación y primera superintendenta hispana de escuelas de Spring ISD, que presta servicios a más de 33.000 estudiantes de una comunidad diversa, donde el 49% son hispanos y latinos y el 44% son negros.

r. Lupita Hinojosa is making history in her current role as the first Hispanic woman to be appointed Spring ISD (Independent School District) Superintendent of Schools.

She officially began the role of the district’s top leadership position on Feb. 1, after her appointment was confirmed on Jan. 27.

Her aspirations for her new important role is “to channel the energy and boundless enthusiasm I have for education toward improving student outcomes and supporting teaching and learning in Spring ISD,” she said.

She plans to emphasize six major points: student outcomes, innovation, leadership, well-being, engagement, and equity.

Spring ISD serves more than 33,000 students in a diverse community, as 49% of the students in the district are Hispanic and Latino, and 44% are Black. In addition, about 85% come from low-income families, and 10% are learning English as their second language.

Hinojosa is very familiar with the educational system and Spring ISD. She originally joined the Harris County, Texas, school district in 2014 as Chief Schools Officer before later serving as the district’s Chief of Innovation and Equity.

In the former role, she helped oversee the implementation of the district’s Five-Year Strategic Plan, which focused on student-centered transformation.

The latter role saw Hinojosa work to create opportunities for students of various backgrounds to ensure excellent and equitable outcomes. Throughout her tenure, she managed to secure more than $40 million in grants for school and transformational efforts.

A HISPANIC EDUCATION LEADER

Hinojosa is a first-generation Mexican-American.

Her parents were immigrants from Monterrey and San Luis, respectively. Born and raised in San Benito in southern Texas, she saw firsthand the challenges and barriers many underserved communities faced, and wanted to be a part of the solutions.

At a young age, she became very involved, helping translate for her parents during parent-teacher meetings and conferences, enrolling in honors classes and participating in various extracurricular activities. She initially anticipated entering the legal profession.

Sus aspiraciones en este nuevo e importante cargo son “canalizar la energía y entusiasmo sin límites que tengo por la educación hacia la meta de mejorar los resultados de los estudiantes y apoyar la educación y el aprendizaje en Spring ISD”, dijo.

Tiene planeado hacer énfasis en seis puntos principales: resultados de los estudiantes, innovación, liderazgo, bienestar, compromiso y equidad.

Spring ISD presta servicios a más de 33.000 estudiantes de una comunidad diversa, ya que 49% de los estudiantes del distrito son hispanos y latinos y el 44% son negros. Además, cerca del 85% proviene de familias de bajos ingresos y el 10% está aprendiendo inglés como segunda lengua.

Hinojosa está muy familiarizada con el sistema educativo y con Spring ISD. En un principio se unió al distrito escolar del condado de Harris (Texas), en el 2014, como directora de escuelas. Posteriormente desempeñó el cargo de jefe de innovación y equidad del distrito.

Como directora de escuelas, ayudó a supervisar la implementación del Plan Estratégico a Cinco Años, que se enfoca en generar una transformación que se centre en el estudiante.

Asimismo, trabajó en crear oportunidades para estudiantes de diferentes procedencias para asegurar resultados excelentes y equitativos. En el tiempo que estuvo en el cargo, aseguró más de $40 millones en subvenciones para iniciativas escolares y transformaciones.

LÍDER HISPANA EN EDUCACIÓN

Hinojosa es mexicano americana de primera generación. Su papá y su mamá eran inmigrantes de Monterrey y San Luis, respectivamente. Nació y creció en San Benito, en el sur de Texas. Allí vio de frente los retos y barreras que tenían muchas comunidades desatendidas y quiso ser parte de la solución.

Desde muy joven se involucró mucho, ayudando a sus papás a traducir a sus padres durante las reuniones y conferencias de padres y profesores, inscribiéndose en clases avanzadas y participando en varias actividades extracurriculares.

En un principio, esperaba dedicarse a la abogacía.

n New York this year, all eyes are on the upcoming gubernatorial election. Democratic incumbent Kathy Hochul — who took over for Andrew Cuomo after he resigned — is the frontrunner on the Democratic side and the race in general.

When she took over for Cuomo on Aug. 24, 2021, Hochul made history as the state’s first woman governor. Now, she’s running to be the first woman ever officially elected to be governor, but there are also two Latinas out for history on the Democratic ticket.

Their names are Diana Reyna and Ana María Archila and both want to be the first Latina Lieutenant Governors in New York history.

SHAKING THINGS UP IN ALBANY

Reyna is a former New York City Councilmember, and was announced on Feb. 16 as the running mate of gubernatorial candidate Tom Suozzi. Before running for governor, he was a U.S. representative from New York’s third district.

“I feel very strongly that Diana is the right person that will appeal statewide. I think together we appeal to everyone in the entire state of New York, and our balance represents the balance of the people in the state of New York,” Suozzi said.

Reyna is beneficial to Suozzi’s campaign, as her distinction as the first Dominican-American woman elected to public office in the state gives him another way to appeal to Latinx voters. But if Suozzi does not succeed, Reyna plans to continue her campaign for New York’s second-in-command.

“I wanted to be part of that campaign, to shake things up and get something done in Albany,” she said.

odos los ojos están puestos este año en Nueva York en las próximas elecciones a la gobernación. La gobernadora demócrata en ejercicio Kathy Hochul -que tomó el lugar de Andrew Cuomo después de su dimisión- va a la cabeza por el Partido Demócrata y en la competencia en general.

Cuando reemplazó a Cuomo, el 24 de agosto de 2021, Hochul hizo historia como la primera mujer gobernadora. Ahora, es la primera mujer que se lanza para ser elegida oficialmente como gobernadora, pero también hay dos latinas que quieren trascender con el Partido Demócrata.

MOVIENDO LAS COSAS EN ALBANY

Reyna fue concejala de la ciudad de Nueva York y se anunció el 16 de febrero que es la compañera de campaña del candidato a la gobernación Tom Suozzi. Antes de esto, Suozzi fue representante del tercer distrito de Nueva York.

“Estoy convencido de que Diana es la persona perfecta que captará el interés en el estado.

Creo que juntos captamos el interés de todos en el estado de Nueva York y juntos representamos el balance perfecto de la población de Nueva York”, dijo Suozzi.

Reyna representa un gran beneficio para la campaña de Suozzi, pues la distinción de ser la primera mujer dominicanoamericana elegida para un cargo público en el estado le abre una puerta para conseguir los votos latinos. Si Suozzi no gana, Reyna continuará con su campaña para ser la segunda al mando en Nueva York.

“Quería ser parte de esa campaña, para poner a andar las cosas y lograr que se hagan cosas en Albany”, dijo.

f there’s anyone in Marilyn Torres’ life that inspired her to work as hard as she has for the community in Camden, it’s her late mother Carmen.

“She was an angel,” Torres said in a recent interview with AL DÍA. Carmen first came to the U.S. mainland from Puerto Rico in 1973 when she was 15 years old and first lived in North Camden before settling in East Camden.

A young mother when she first arrived, Torres’ mother would go on to have five kids. Camden represented a better future for both herself and her children.

GARMENT WORKER TO THE BOE

Instead of going to high school, Torres initially worked in a garment factory alongside her mother. It was there she saw the true sacrifice her mother made for her and her siblings.

“I saw her face dripping in sweat. I couldn’t believe how hard my mother worked. I cried without her seeing me,” she said, recounting how her mother would work through piles of garments

Torres’ quickly found out the work was not for her, and she went back to school, where she got her diploma and then went on to college.

There, Torres met the next person who would transform her life in a teacher named Jose Jimenez. As a student who still struggled with English, she was pushed aside by many, but Jimenez saw potential.

Torres ya era una joven madre a su arribo, y tuvo cinco hijos en total. Para ella y sus hijos Camden representaba un mejor futuro.

DE UNA FÁBRICA AL CONCEJO DE EDUCACIÓN

En lugar de estudiar en la secundaria, Torres inicialmente trabajó en una fábrica de ropa junto a su madre. Fue allí que vio el verdadero sacrificio que su madre hacía por ella y sus hermanos.

“Yo veía su cara bañada en sudor. No podía creer lo mucho que trabajaba. Lloré sin que ella me viera”, dijo al relatar cómo su madre trabajaba con pilas y pilas de prendas más rápido que cualquier otro trabajador.

Pronto Torres se dio cuenta de que ese trabajo no era para ella, y regresó a sus estudios, se graduó y luego ingresó en la universidad.

Allí, Torres conoció a la siguiente persona que iba a transformar su vida, el profesor José Jiménez. Muchos la hacían a un lado, pues era una estudiante que batallaba con el inglés, pero Jiménez vio el potencial en ella. Él le ofreció trabajo en el Concejo de Educación de Camden, donde las pasiones de Torres florecieron, y donde se quedó tra-

ciencias sociales, y textiles están redefiniendo lo que significa humanamente posible.

Constantly referenced by the Russian president, Armando Montenegro wrote about who Ivan Ilyin is. “Vladimir Putin follows a script written many decades ago by Ivan Ilyin… a Russian aristocrat, opponent of the October Revolution, an ideologist of the White Russia, a Christian of fascist ideas, who lived in exile in Germany and Switzerland, where he died in 1954… his figure was taken out of oblivion by Vladimir Putin, who took his remains to Russia, where he was buried with honors… he became the main ideologist of the regime. Putin frequently quotes his books and considers him the most outstanding Russian historian, and the one who inspired his fight against other countries in the West. Ilyin’s extensive work created the myth of a Russia that was pure, virginal, and a victim of corruption and harassment by the West. Like other fascist authors, he disregards the individual and despises democracy. He sets out that his nation is a pure organism … that must be protected from external attacks.”

Lorenzo Bernaldo de Quiros published on March 26, a piece titled “To Understand Putin” that analyzes the origins and vision of Russia’s president. “In her demolishing essay, ‘Putin’s People,’ Catherine Belton provides a detailed description of how a post-Yeltsin Russia became an autocratic and corrupt State dominated by the last generation of the KGB and mafia… The dream of reconstructing Russian the imperial sphere of influence after the collapse of the USSR is and has always been the strategic core, Putin’s leitmotif of his actions. The doctrine of the project is not anchored in communism, but in nationalist thinkers, connected to the White movement, in the brutal civil conflict that ravaged Russia after the October Revolution. Eventually, during the Cold War years, some relevant ideologists of that current ‘realized’ that the evil goal of the West was to dismember the Soviet Union.”

Not anymore… The political cost of that confrontation will be huge for Putin, as it is leaving him isolated… they did not imagine the impact that a punishment using economic power would have… The negative effects of this war will expand throughout the planet. First, its place in the rest of Europe, whose strong dependency on Russian gas and oil will take a toll… It is clear that the two powers that are taking on the debate on the world’s future are now the United States and China… an air of a new Cold War is apparently expanding. If it does occur, it will be different, much more complex and multipolar. And Latin America? No common stance.”

SETTING THE STANDARD AS

WOMEN LEADERS S

hannon Morales and Sharmain Matlock-Turner are two women in different stages of their respective careers.

Morales is an enthusiast who recently made the switch to tech and entrepreneurship after a handful of years in the corporate world, while Matlock-Turner is a seasoned executive with over three decades of experience in the nonprofit sector.

Despite their vastly different career paths and stages, both women play a critical role as prominent representations of trailblazing women leadership in the region.

It is for that reason the two were selected as the Emerging Leader and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, respectively, for the 2022 AL DÍA Women of Merit event.

Their respective stories draw a clear picture as to why.

SHANNON’S DETERMINATION

Shannon Morales was born and raised in a one parent, all-women household in northern New Jersey.

As the only child to a single moth-

er, Morales’ mother and grandmother, whom she described as “two strong, independent women,” always made sure to keep her very involved.

Whether it was sports, competitions, or anything else in which a goal could be defined and later achieved, Morales always felt inclined to participate.

“I felt like I learned at a very young age just how to be competitive and how to achieve things,” she said. “I was very accomplishment driven.”

The thrill of achievement and accomplishment followed Morales all throughout her education and into her professional career.

Upon graduating from college and earning her bachelor’s, she entered Corporate America in the finance sector.

“I had the same drive,” Morales confirmed. “I always wanted to overachieve, I wanted to go out there and take on new projects and work cross-functionally across multiple teams. And that was received well amongst my peers.”

However, it wasn’t always as well-received by her supervisors and the higher ups.

hannon Morales y Sharmain Matlock-Turner son dos mujeres en diferentes etapas de sus carreras.

Morales es una entusiasta que recientemente quiso tomar un desvío hacia la ruta de la tecnología y el emprendimiento después de unos años en el mundo corporativo., y Matlock-Turner es una avezada ejecutiva con más de treinta años de experiencia en el sector de las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro.

A pesar de sus carreras y etapas diametralmente diferentes, ellas dos juegan un papel esencial, pues encarnan una representación sobresaliente de mujeres en posiciones de liderazgo en la región.

Por eso fueron seleccionadas como merecedoras del reconocimiento ‘Líder en Ascenso’ y ‘Una Vida de Logros, respectivamente, en el evento Mujeres AL DÍA 2022.

Hacemos un recorrido claro por sus respectivas historias para responder el porqué.

LA DETERMINACIÓN DE SHANNON

Shannon Morales nació y creció en un hogar sin papá y exclusivamente femenino, en el norte de Nueva Jersey.

Como era hija única de madre soltera,

su mamá y su abuela, a quienes describió como “dos mujeres fuertes e independientes”, no olvidaban incluirla en todo.

Fuera deportes, competencias, o cualquier otra cosa en la que hubiese un objetivo a lograr, a Morales siempre la movía el impulso de participar. “Sentía que desde temprana edad había aprendido a ser competitiva y a cómo lograr cosas”, dijo.

“Me impulsaba el deseo de tener logros”.

La emoción por el logro y la satisfacción la persiguió por toda su vida educativa hasta llegar a su etapa profesional.

Al graduarse de la universidad y ganar su título universitario, ingresó al sector corporativo del país en el área financiera.

“Tenía la misma pasión” confirmó Morales. “Siempre quería estar por encima en mis logros, quería salir y emprender nuevos proyectos y trabajar de manera multidisciplinaria con diferentes equipos. Y eso tuvo buena acogida entre mis colegas”.

Sin embargo, no tuvo buena acogida con sus supervisores y superiores. En todo el tiempo que trabajó en ambientes corporativos, Morales solo recuerda a una sola persona que la apoyó y abogó por su éxito: una mujer.

“Recuerdo que pensé ‘si tuviéramos más apoyo como ese, habría más profesio-

ENGLISH rales can recall just a single boss who really supported her and championed her success — a woman.

“I remember saying, ‘if we had more support like that, there would be a lot more professionals out there who are fulfilled in their careers, who want to continue working in that setting and who would probably be more productive and work harder,’” she noted.

Upon leaving Corporate America, that mindset soon drove her to launch Tribaja, a community platform, where Morales helps connect talent to free resources and supportive, inclusive leaders within the tech industry.

A CAREER SWITCH

The decision to leave the corporate world was followed by a period of self-reflection.

Through it came the realization that personality and work style should match a person’s profession.

As a single mother of three daughters and a creative professional, Morales wanted a profession that would allow her to both have more time to spend with her children and also provide a way to allow her creativity to shine through.

While looking for her next career path, she found an opportunity to be an innovation manager and intrapreneur. This opened the door to future opportunities to find emerging tech companies changing the status quo.

“I really love that space of just constantly moving and constantly thinking of new emerging tech innovations, and then I realized I really could probably do this on my own,” said Morales.

She officially made the decision to become a full-time entrepreneur in early 2020.

SHARMAIN’S EARLY EXPERIENCES

Sharmain Matlock-Turner was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, before moving to Philadelphia as a child.

While she doesn’t have a ton of memories from her time living in Charlottesville, she can recall the various summer trips to the area to visit her grandparents.

While visiting the rural south, Matlock-Turner saw visible signs of segregation throughout. She and her family would often have to wait in the “Colored Only” section of the bus station, sit in the balcony of the movie theater, and were only allowed to eat at certain diners.

Luego de salir del sector corporativo, esa mentalidad la llevó en poco tiempo a lanzar Tribaja, una comunidad virtual donde ayuda a que el talento se conecte con recursos gratis y con líderes dentro de la industria tecnológica que ofrezcan apoyo y sean inclusivos.

UN CAMBIO DE CARRERA

A la decisión de salir del mundo corporativo le siguió un periodo de autorreflexión. Le llegó la revelación de que la personalidad y el trabajo tienen que ir acorde con la profesión de la persona.

Siendo madre de tres hijas y una profesional creativa, Morales quiso una profesión que le permitiera tener más tiempo para sus hijas y con la cual también pudiera brillar su creatividad.

Mientras estaba en esa búsqueda de profesión, se encontró con una oportunidad para ser gerente de innovación y emprendedora. Esto le abrió la puerta a oportunidades a futuro para encontrar compañías tecnológicas para cambiar el statu quo.

“Amo ese modo de trabajar estando constantemente en movimiento y pensando en las innovaciones que surgen en el campo de la tecnología y, además, me di cuenta de que era posible hacerlo por mi cuenta”, dijo Morales.

Tomó la decisión definitiva de convertirse en una emprendedora a tiempo completo a comienzos de 2020.

Las primeras experiencias de Sharmain Sharmain Matlock-Turner nació en Charlottesville (Virginia). Siendo una niña, se trasladó a Filadelfia.

Aunque no tiene un montón de recuerdos del tiempo que vivió en Charlottesville, sí recuerda los paseos de verano a esa área para visitar a sus abuelos.

Cuando visitaba el sur rural, Matlock-Turner veía las señales de la segregación en todos lados. Ella y su mamá tenían que esperar en la sección ‘Solo para personas de color’ de la estación de buses, sentarse en el balcón del teatro y solo podían comer ciertas cosas.

Despite this, she describes her visits to Charlottesville as “a very, very special time for us.”

“It was just a wonderful opportunity to feel like the world was bigger than it felt like in Philadelphia,” said Matlock-Turner.

While there, she and her family often would go to Vinegar Hill, where many of the Black-owned businesses and restaurants in the area were located. The experiences were eye-opening.

Back in Philadelphia, Matlock-Turner’s mother and aunts made sure to always keep her engaged and involved in activities in the community, and also in church.

UAC’S FIRST WOMAN LEADER

Las habilidades de liderazgo de Matlock-Turner se desarrollaron en una etapa temprana y asentaron los pilares que la llevaron a su posición actual. En 1999, la nombraron directora y presidenta ejecutiva de Urban Affairs Coalition.

Fue la primera mujer nombrada para el cargo de líder ejecutiva de la organización en sus más de 50 años de historia, luego de haber sido recomendada por algunos de los otros líderes de la región.

Matlock-Turner también había formado parte de varios comités y como presidenta de la Corporación de Revitalización de la Avenida Ogontz. Se dio a conocer como jefa de gabinete de la difunta senadora Roxanne Jones, la primera mujer negra que ocupó un puesto en el Senado del Estado de Pensilvania.

“A veces se nos olvida cómo llegamos a donde estamos, pero trato de cerciorarme de que no me pase a mí”, dijo Matlock-Turner. “Quiero agradecerles no solo por creer en mí, sino porque, al final, me apoyaron cuando ya había llegado”.

La UAC ahora trabaja con 80 aliados en toda la región, más de cuatro veces la cantidad que había en el momento en el que ella llegó a bordo.

In 1999, she was named the President & CEO of the Urban Affairs Coalition, the first woman to be appointed to the organization’s lead executive role in its now more than 50-year history, after being recommended by some of the region’s other leaders.

Matlock-Turner had also served on a number of committees, including as chair of the Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corporation, and made a name for herself as Chief of Staff for the late Senator Roxanne Jones, the first Black woman to serve in the Pennsylvania State Senate.

Each March — Women’s History Month and also the month she officially took on the role — Matlock-Turner thinks about women like Sen. Jones; former executive director and President of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the late Ahmeenah Young; former Philadelphia City Councilmember Marian Tasco; and others.

“We sometimes forget how we get to places and I try to make sure that I never do,” said Matlock-Turner. “So I really want to thank them for not only believing in me, but ultimately supporting me once I got there.”

TWO PATHS, ONE MISSION

Like all of us, Morales and Matlock-Turner have had to navigate the challenges of the pandemic. However, both have found the silver lining in those challenges.

In the latter’s view, the pandemic presented an opportunity for the government to put more dollars into nonprofits and philanthropy, making them a bigger priority.

“This allowed us to be able to keep our doors open, and to keep working,” said Matlock-Turner. “And we were able to continue providing really great services.”

Remaining committed to the its four missions — strengthening nonprofits, building wealth in urban communities, developing youth and young adults, and creating strategic partnerships — the UAC pivoted very well and ensured that youth, diverse businesses, nonprofits and organizations across the region continued receiving much needed support and resources.

For Morales, her foray into full-time entrepreneurship was quickly followed by the pandemic. At the time, she was running Stealthify, a new app that promoted social distancing.

Just as she was set to launch Tribaja, the pandemic hit and hiring stopped.

Months later, the murder of George Floyd occured and many businesses looked to implement more inclusive practices.

From there, she had a decision to make — stick with Stealthify and look to create features that would be useful post-pandemic, or fully commit to the talent marketplace that was emerging after the pandemic caused many to shift and pivot.

“I decided to focus on the community building aspect of the business,” said Morales.

Since then, she has created opportunities for countless diverse individuals, and in turn, growing the tech community in the process.

AN EMERGING LEADER

Due to Morales’ commitment to opening doors for Black, Latinx and other diverse talent to enter the tech space, the region will only continue to see its tech community grow.

preneur two years ago, Morales is already being recognized for her impactful work.

This is what led her to being named the Emerging Leader. Appreciative and humbled by the honor, when she thinks about what the distinction means to her, it comes down to the definition of a leader.

“I’ve taken a lot of risks to get here,” she said. “But I believe, because of that, I’m able to create pathways for others for them not to have to take as many risks as I did.”

For Morales, it’s about giving back to her community, as well as professionals who may have faced similar challenges and obstacles throughout their journeys.

Whether they are single parents, career changers, or those who may feel alone in the process, Morales feels a responsibility to help create opportunities and ensure others “not feel like they have to give up everything just to get something that others are already entitled to,” she said.

A LIFETIME OF ACHIEVEMENT

Over her 23 years leading the UAC, Matlock-Turner has seen her share of ups and downs throughout the region.

Aside from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, she noted the 2008 Recession as among the biggest challenges she and her organization has endured throughout her tenure.

However, in the face of both challenges, she and the organization she has led continues to thrive.

It is simply a continuation of the valuable leadership Matlock-Turner has consistently displayed throughout her career. It’s why she was selected to be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I’m seriously blown away knowing that this was a group of people who chose me,” she said. “I am pleased, I am humbled and thankful. It’s wonderful, it’s absolutely wonderful.”

Despite her current role, being an executive leader for as long as she has, and having received as many honors and awards as she has over the years, Matlock-Turner remains as focused, driven and determined as she’s always been.

“Every day, I get up and say, ‘you’re really just getting started,’” she said. “Always starting, always moving.”

“I love this award… And I think about how special it is. But in the end, I’m still going to get up the next day and say, ‘What can I do to make the world a better place?

Because I’m just getting started.’” . z

Para Morales, a su incursión en el emprendimiento a tiempo completo pronto le siguió la pandemia. En ese momento, administraba Stealthify, una nueva aplicación que promovía la distancia social.

Justo cuando estaba lista para lanzar Tribaja, la pandemia explotó y se detuvieron las contrataciones. Meses después, ocurrió el asesinato de George Floyd y muchos negocios buscaron implementar prácticas más inclusivas.

En ese momento tuvo que tomar una decisión: quedarse con Stealthify y crear funciones que fuesen útiles después de la pandemia o comprometerse del todo con el mercado de talento que estaba emergiendo después de los cambios y los ajustes que todos tuvieron que hacer por causa de la pandemia.

“Decidí enfocarme en el aspecto de construir comunidad del negocio”, dijo Morales. Desde ahí, ha creado oportunidades para innumerables individuos diversos y, a la vez, hacer crecer a la comunidad durante el proceso.

UN LÍDER EN ASCENSO

Gracias al compromiso de Morales de abrir las puertas para negros, latinos y otro talento diverso a los espacios tecnológicos, la región no hará más que ver cómo la comunidad tecnológica crece.

A pesar de que hace apenas dos años se lanzó al emprendimiento a tiempo completo, Morales está siendo reconocida por su trabajo que ha causado impacto.

Por eso fue nombrada Líder en Ascenso.

Llena de agradecimiento y sintiéndose honrada con la distinción, piensa en lo

que ese honor significa para ella. Todo se reduce a la definición de lo que es ser un líder.

“Tomé muchos riesgos para llegar aquí”, dijo. “Pero creo que es por eso que puedo crear caminos y que otros no tengan que tomar tantos riesgos como yo”.

Para Morales, todo se trata de retribuir a su comunidad, así como a profesionales que tal vez se enfrentaron a retos y obstáculos similares a los largo de su recorrido.

Ya sean padres solteros, personas que cambian de profesión, o aquellos que se sienten solos en el proceso, Morales siente la responsabilidad de ayudar a crear oportunidades y asegurarles a otros que “no sientan que tienen que prescindir de todo solo para conseguir algo a lo que otros tienen derecho”, dijo.

UNA VIDA DE LOGROS

En los 23 años liderando la UAC, Matlock-Turner ha visto una buena parte de altas y bajas en la región. Aparte de la pandemia de COVID-19, resaltó la recesión del 2008 entre los retos más grandes que ella y su organización soportaron durante su estancia en el cargo. Aun así, ante esos desafíos, la organización que lidera sigue prosperando.

Todo se debe a la continuación del valioso liderazgo que Matlock-Turner ha demostrado de manera consistente a lo largo de su carrera. Por eso fue seleccionada para hacerle un reconocimiento con el Premio Una Vida de Logros.

“Estoy realmente sorprendida de que este grupo de personas me escogiera. Estoy complacida, me llenan de honor y me siento agradecida. Es maravilloso, absolutamente maravilloso”, dijo.

A pesar de su cargo actual, ser una líder ejecutiva por tanto tiempo y haber recibido tantos honores y premios a lo largo de los años, Matlock-Turner sigue tan enfocada, motivada y decidida como siempre. “Todos los días, me levanto y digo, ‘de verdad, apenas empiezas’”, dijo. “Siempre empezando, siempre en movimiento”.

y’a Jackson is the director of diversity, equity and inclusion at AmerisourceBergen, where she has the opportunity to embed DE&I in a variety of areas within the company.

That work especially flourishes when collaborating with the talent acquisition team, where she influences the young people the company brings in, making sure they are diverse.

Her drive for DE&I is rooted in her childhood experience of being a full-time caregiver for her mom, who lived with multiple sclerosis. It not only helped inform her interactions with people in her field (which is paramount), but also exposed her to the disparities she currently faces in the industry.

In her own words, every day she learns, grows and helps others along the same path.

arilyn Torres is the first Latina City Councilmember in Camden history. Her story is one of a woman who learned to love to serve her community — first through various roles with Camden’s Board of Education and then running

for office.

While working with Camden’s Board of Education, Torres worked with migrant families to get them resources, ran a Spanish-language TV program on the Board of Education’s public access television, and formed East Camden on the Move, a group of parents that demanded better services from city government.

She’s since served as a councilmember for more than a decade in the role, continuing her community advocacy and bringing other Latinas into the fold in Camden’s halls of power.

arilyn Torres es la primera concejala latina de la ciudad en la historia de Camden. Es una mujer que aprendió a amar el servicio a su comunidad: primero, en varios roles dentro del Concejo Educativo de Camden y, luego, al postularse a un cargo público.

ean Friedman-Rudovsky and Cassie Haynes are two media dynamos out to change the landscape of Philadelphia media as co-founders and co-directors of Resolve Philadelphia. The media organization is behind the impactful collaborative reporting projects Broke In Philly, Equally Informed Philly, Reframe, and now Shake the Table.

All are projects geared towards collaboration among Philadelphia’s often competitive media entities, flipping the script on coverage in an effort to provide more equitable news for all across the city.

In the process, both have also redefined what it means to be in news, demanding more thought of all communities when covering traditional topics and creating better stories that reshape Philadelphia on the whole.

issette Agosto Cintrón is the principal of Philadelphia Virtual Academy. Opened in 2013, the academy provided a full-online curriculum for students 6-12 in the School District of Philadelphia. Starting in 2021-22, that base expanded to k-12.

Cintrón started her career as a teacher in North Philadelphia, where the disparities for teachers of color were prevalent from the very beginning. She was one of the few Latinas that worked at a school in a predominantly Latino neighborhood and was also one of the few bilingual ones.

That disparity is what drove her up the ranks as her career progressed, and now Cintrón is out to inspire other Latinas to enter the education field and shoot for their dreams in fields once thought taboo for women. STEM in particular, holds a special place in her heart.

issette Agosto Cintrón es la directora de Philadelphia Virtual Academy. La academia, que abrió en 2013, ofrecía desde ese momento un currículo totalmente en línea para estudiantes de grados 6 a 12 en el distrito escolar de Filadelfia. A partir del periodo 2021-22, esa base se expandió desde kínder a grado 12.

Cintrón inició su carrera como profesora en el norte de Filadelfia, donde predominaba la desigualdad para los profesores de color desde un principio.

amaris Alvarado-Rodriguez is the founder and principal CEO of South Philadelphia’s Children’s Playhouse, an early education center that now serves upwards of 270 kids at two locations.

Alvarado-Rodriguez stumbled into early childcare after she began babysitting the child of one of her daughter’s counselors at school. Word spread, more mothers needed help watching their kids, and she went back to school to make her dive into the industry more credentialed.

Now, 17 years since starting Children’s Playhouse, Alvarado-Rodriguez has become a successful Latina entrepreneur and a leading figure in all of early childcare across Philadelphia and all of Pennsylvania.

amaris Alvarado-Rodríguez es la fundadora y directora Children’s Playhouse en el sur de Filadelfia, un centro educativo que ahora presta servicio a más de 270 niños en sus dos sedes.

Alvarado-Rodríguez fue a dar al campo del cuidado de la niñez temprana después de que empezara a trabajar como niñera para una de las consejeras de la escuela de su hija. BONKOSI HORN AND MORRISA JENKINS FOUNDERS OF FREEDOM APOTHECARY ENGLISH

B

onkosi Horn and Morrisa Jenkins are the founders of Freedom Apothecary, a new, nationally-recognized, Philadelphia-based brand that sells health and wellness catered to all women, but especially women of color who are often left out of the industry.

The business’ story starts with a dream that Jenkins had about opening up a welcoming space for Black women in the health and wellness industry. She was connected to Horn shortly after and the duo sparked a powerful partnership that created one of the most unique holistic spaces in Philadelphia and the country.

Freedom Apothecary’s success — especially during COVID-19 — was a breakthrough in a time that laid bare the distrust between communities of color and traditional spaces of health and wellness.

Theirs was open and welcoming, and will only grow as more and more people across the country discover the space and community it fosters.

s a child of two parents who were a part of the Peace Corps, social justice has always been a critical part of her identity and cause.

Prior to her newest role with JEVS, Figueroa served as Deputy Mayor at the Office of Children and Families. She’s also had roles as Deputy Commissioner at the Department of Human Services, executive director of Women Against Abuse, and director and CEO of Congreso.

In each role, she had been dedicated to putting the community forward and providing more equity and access to all people. Her impact has helped many in underserved, marginalized and vulnerable communities obtain the valuable resources needed to survive and thrive.

onsidered the most important literary agent in the Spanish-speaking world and the driving force and creator of the so-called Latin American ‘Boom,’ Carmen Balcells was always an object of devoti on.

Now, seven years after her passing, the Mallorcan writer Carme Riera, a close friend of Balcells’ and author at the agency, recently published Carmen Balcells. Word Trafficker, a biography, and the fruit of years of research on the life and achievements of the agent that Gabriel Garcia Marquez once gave the nickname of ‘Big Mama.’

It was Balcells who got Garcia Marquez his first publisher, and the one who made him an acclaimed success around the world. Aside from Gabo, Balcells also represented another five Nobel Prize winners like Mario Vargas Llosa, Pablo Neruda, and many others. It’s a long list of great Latin American and Hispanic authors, the most outstanding are: Carlos Fuentes, Julio Cortazar, Alfredo Bryce Echenique and Eduardo Mendoza.

A KEY HISPANIC LIT. FIGURE

In this first official biography of Balcells (the agent gave consent to the author before passing away), Riera does not limit herself to highlighting her achievements as an editor — her extraordinary work at revolutionizing the Spanish publishing landscape, her influence on authors, motivating them to keep creating work, her fundamental role when it came to positioning the city of Barcelona as the main forum of Hispanic literature — but also portrays her as an ambitious woman with somewhat harsh manners that could impose her contracting practices. They were not always well received by the publishing houses. But it was those practices, her fervent support of authors who adored her and her vast knowledge of the publishing world that helped her make best-sellers out of a portfolio of Hispanic authors who did not have it as easy as their Anglo-Saxon colleagues.

“If Gabriel Garcia Marquez had had a different agent, there would not have been as much interest in his work because she had it translated all around the world,” Riera told EFE in an interview.

CAPTURING ALL OF ‘BIG MAMA’

More than a book lover, Balcells is shown as a self-made business owner in times where women’s place in the professional world was not easy, and who placed author’s rights front and center. One of her most important innovations as an editor was to sell pocket editions to as many publishers as possible, of course, only after the exclusive rights to a first edition.

“That created a constant bidding after having juiced the succulent advance payments for the first edition,” highlighted literature critic Andres Rodriguez in Forbes.

Another aspect Riera wanted to accentuate about her former agent was her sense of humor.

She recounts that on one occasion, Garcia Marquez asked: “Do you love me, Carmen?” and she answered: “I cannot answer that. You are the 36.2% of total invoices.”

The book is filled with similar anecdotes, many of them from the lips of the authors themselves, “that outline the profile of a dominant, hyper-sensible — weepy— woman, a busybody and a great negotiator. An iron woman with a lot of fragility,” said Rodriguez.

Even more cutting are the testimonies of Jorge Herralde, an Anagrama editor, and Peruvian author, Mario Vargas Llosa.

“Carmen was called a betrayer, money grabbing, ignoble, a knowledge saboteur, literature murderer and many other things…” the latter said about his close friend.z

onsiderada la agente literaria más importante del mundo hispanohablante y la impulsora, o incluso creadora, del llamado “Boom” latinoamericano, Carmen Balcells (Barcelona, 1930-2015) siempre fue objeto de devoción.

Ahora, siete años después de su fallecimiento, la escritora mallorquina Carme Riera, amiga personal de Balcells y autora de la agencia, acaba de publicar ‘Carmen Balcells. Traficante de palabras’ (Debate, 2022), un libro biográfico fruto de años de investigación que recorre la vida y los logros de la agente a la que Gabriel García Márquez apodó en su día “Mamá Grande”.

Fue precisamente Balcells quien le consiguió su primer editor a García Márquez y quien lo convirtió en un autor de éxito consagrado en todo el mundo. Además de Gabo, Balcells fue representante de otros cinco premios Nobel, entre ellos Mario Vargas Llosa y Pablo Neruda, y de una larga lista de grandes autores latinoamericanos e hispanos, entre los que destacan Carlos Fuentes, Julio Cortázar, Alfredo Bryce Echenique y Eduardo Mendoza.

En esta primera biografía oficial de Balcells (la agente dio su consentimiento a la autora antes de fallecer), Riera no solo se limita a destacar sus logros como editora, sino también a retratarla como una mujer ambiciosa y de trato a veces duro, que supo imponer sus prácticas de contratación, aunque no siempre fueran bien recibidas por las editoriales.

“Sí Gabriel García Márquez hubiera estado con otra agente, es posible que su interés no hubiera sido tanto en el mundo, porque ella consiguió traducciones de su obra en todo el mundo”, dijo Riera en una entrevista con Efe la semana pasada.

Y lo mismo sucede, añadió la biógrafa, con “la proyección de Pablo Neruda, Mario Vargas Llosa, Camilo José Cela, Miguel Ángel Asturias y Vicente Aleixandre, todos ellos premios Nobel”.

CAPTURANDO A TODA LA “BIG MAMA

Más que una amante de los libros, Balcells aparece retratada como una empresaria hecha a sí misma en una época en la cual la incorporación de la mujer al mundo profesional no era fácil. Y logró poner por delante la defensa de los derechos de autor. Una de sus principales innovaciones como editora fue vender a cuantos más editores posibles las ediciones de bolsillo. Eso sí, después de la exclusividad de la primera edición. “Con eso propiciaba una puja constante después de haber exprimido los suculentos adelantos de la primera edición”, destaca el crítico literario Andrés Rodríguez en la revista Forbes.

Otro de los aspectos que Riera ha querido destacar de su antigua agente es su sentido del humor. Cuenta que en una ocasión, García Márquez le preguntó: “¿Me quieres, Carmen?”, y ella le respondió: “No te puedo contestar. Eres el 36,2 por ciento del total de la facturación”.

El libro está plagado de anécdotas similares, muchas de ellas en boca de sus autores, “que dibujan el perfil de una mujer dominante, hipersensible -muy llorona-, detallista, metomentodo y gran negociadora. Una mujer de hierro llena de fragilidades”, comenta Rodríguez.

Testimonios aún vivos son los de Jorge Herralde, editor de Anagrama, o el autor peruano Mario Vargas Llosa, entre otros.

nd the world listened. “Amor, Amor” (“Love, Love”) is one of the most celebrated poems by Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American author to win a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945. Lucila de Maria del Perpetuo Socorro Godoy Alcayaga was her real name, and she took Latin American poetry to great heights from her native Chile. This is her story.

She did not become Gabriela Mistral until 1908, when she used the pseudonym for the first time to publish her poem “Del Pasado” (“From the Past”) in the El Coquimbo newspaper. She started working as a teacher, and little by little, had her work published in other newspapers such as Penumbras de La Serena or La Voz de Elqui de Vicuña, the area where she was born. That media opened the doors to Elegancias, a magazine led by Ruben Dario from Paris.

EDUCATION FIRST

At this stage, she started writing her great masterpiece, which would see the light in New York in 1922: Desolación (Desolation). Back then, Mistral was only

Her journey was marked by education. After publishing Desolación, the poetess went to live in Mexico to work on the education reform of politician, thinker and writer Jose Vasconcelos. It was there that she published Lecturas para Mujeres, an anthology of prose poetry for girls and women who did not receive the same academic resources as boys or men.

Politics would come later, always from a functional perspective, and driven by reading and education. She was the secretary of the League of Nations Committee on Intellectual Cooperation in Geneva, represented Chile and Ecuador at the Congress of the Universities International Federation in Madrid, and worked at the Administrative Council of the Education Cinematography Institute of the League of Nations in Rome.

A FIRST IN LATIN AMERICA

PRIMER NOBEL LATINOAMERICANO

Her career in the United States, Latin America and Spain enriched her poem anthologies. In 1938 came Tala, a poetry book she wrote from Buenos Aires, dedicated to the children suffering as a result of the Spanish Civil War. Mistral transferred the book’s copyrights to Catalan institutions that sheltered defenseless people. This is one of her most mature works, and one of the most important in Spanish language literature.

These were the pillars that earned her the first Nobel Prize in Literature for a Latin American. In 1945, the Swedish Academy awarded her the prize “for lyric poetry which, inspired by powerful emotions, has made a symbol of her name.”

She herself explained in an interview that her nomination was the idea of a writer and friend of hers, Adela Velasco, who wrote to Chile’s president, Pedro Aguirre, and both translated her poems.

In her speech in Sweden, she said: “For my adventurous nature that surpasses me in this moment, I am the direct voice of the poets of my race and the indirect voice of the noble Spanish and Portuguese languages.”

Mistral passed away in 1957, but her verses keep touching the emotions of millions of readers around the world 65 years later. z MARCH 30 - APRIL 6, 2022

Su carrera pasó por Estados Unidos, América Latina y España, que nutrieron sus poemarios. En 1938 apareció Tala, un libro de poesía que desde Buenos Aires dedicó a los niños que estaban sufriendo la Guerra Civil española. Mistral cedió todos los derechos del libro a las instituciones catalanas que acogieron a los desamparados. Sin duda, es una de sus obras más maduras y una de las más importantes de la literatura en español.

Sobre esos pilares cayó el primer Nobel de Literatura para Latinoamérica. En 1945, la Academia Sueca le concedió el premio “por su poesía lírica que, inspirada en poderosas emociones, ha hecho de su nombre un símbolo”. Ella misma explicó en una entrevista que su candidatura surgió de su amiga y escritora Adela Velasco, quien le escribió al presidente de Chile, Pedro Aguirre, y se encargaron de traducir sus poemas.

En su discurso en Suecia, pronunció: “Por una venturanza que me sobrepasa, soy en este momento la voz directa de los poetas de mi raza y la indirecta de las muy nobles lenguas española y portuguesa”.

uring the Gala of the 94th edition of the Oscar Awards 2022, female presence was predominant from beginning to end, and left its mark in Hollywood’s cinema history.

On Sunday, New Zealander, Jane Campion won an Oscar for best director with “The Power of the Dog,” the first woman in the history of these awards to get the prize. In 2021, the award for the same category was given to Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland.”

We cannot forget about Latin America’s presence on the stage with a performance from the film “Encanto,” with Colombian singer Carolina Gaitan. The animated movie showcases Colombian multi-cultural heritage, and won the prize for best animated film.

Also, the director of CODA, Sian Heder, was given recognition in the awards for her screenplay adaptation of French film “The Bélier Family.” The film won a statuette for Best Adapted Screenplay”, not to mention that it also won the prize for Best Film.

For Best Actress the Oscar went to Jessica Chastain, for her terrific interpretation in The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Other nominees were Penelope Cruz, for her role in “Parallel Mothers.”

La neozelandesa Jane Campion ganó este domingo el Oscar a la mejor dirección por The Power of the Dog, siendo la tercera mujer en la historia de estos premios en obtener el galardón. En el 2021, había sido para Chloé Zhao por Nomadland.

No se puede dejar de contar que en el escenario también se hizo presente América Latina con la presentación musical de Encanto, en la que participó la cantante colombiana Carolina Gaitán. La película animada muestra la multiculturalidad colombiana y obtuvo el premio en esa categoría.

También se destacó el reconocimiento que se le hizo a Sian Heder, directora de CODA, por la adaptación que hizo del guion de la cinta francesa La Familia Belier. Obtuvo la estatuilla como ‘Mejor Guion Adaptado”. Sin contar que también ganó como ‘Mejor Película’.

En la categoría de ‘Mejor Actriz’ el premio fue para Jessica Chastain, por su maravillosa interpretación en Los ojos de Tammy Faye. Entre las nominadas estuvo la española Penélope Cruz, por personificación en Madres paralelas.

Por su parte, Ariana DeBose fue galardonada como Mejor actriz de reparto por su papel en West Side Story. Se sumó a la lista de premiadas Jenny Beavan, por ‘Mejor Vestuario’ en la cinta Cruella. z

hances are you know someone who has been a victim of fraud or scams. As a result of the pandemic, fraudsters are finding new ways to find new victims. The good news is that there are simple ways for consumers to stay safe and fight back.

Scammers are always coming up with new ways to get you to part with your money. In a recent Chase survey of 2,000 consumers, 84% of survey respondents agreed that scams and scammers have become more sophisticated in recent years.

To spot fraud, it’s important to learn more about the most widespread scams, how to prevent them and what to do if you think you may be a victim.

We sat down with Chandra Williams, local Chase Community Manager in Philadelphia, to help you become more aware of the most common scams out there and what steps you can take so that you can protect your information and keep your hard-earned money safe.

Al Dia: How common are fraud and scams ?

Chandra Williams: Fraud cases are unfortunately becoming more prevalent, and more sophisticated. In fact, the FTC revealed that 3.5 million people reported being a victim of fraud or identity theft in 2020, an increase of more than 1.5 million from the previous year.

Al Dia: What kind of scams exist that we should be aware of and know how to stop them?

While new scams are always popping up, there are several common approaches that keep resurfacing year after year.

Some of the more common scams we’ve encountered and helped our customers fight against may not always

ENGLISH seems so obvious at first if you’ve been targeted.

What shocks many of our customers is how far scam artists are willing to impersonate familiar faces, whether that be close relatives or community officials, and also be able to trick you so easily by using your own smart phone against you. So next time you receive a text message or email on your phone, think twice before you engage.

Here is what I mean:

FAKE BANK FRAUD SPECIALIST

What they look like: Consumers receive a fraud alert via text message that appears to come from their bank. The message asks them to validate whether they made a certain purchase or sent a certain amount of money. After saying “no,” the recipient gets a call from someone claiming to be from their bank’s fraud team. The phone number may even appear to be a real phone number from your bank.

They’ll ask for the customer’s banking username, password or a one-time passcode. Alternatively, they’ll sometimes ask the customer to send money to themselves or a third party to “stop” the fraud or to get their money back. Once the scammer has gained access to a person’s account or convinced them to send money, they usually stop contact and the victim’s money is gone.

How to stop them: Unfortunately, scammers target consumers from many banks and they are very good at disguising themselves by “spoofing” or making their phone number appear legitimate. Consumers should never share their banking pass-

s probable que conozcas a alguien que haya sido víctima de fraude o estafas. Como consecuencia de la pandemia, los estafadores están encontrando nuevas formas de encontrar nuevas víctimas. La buena noticia es que existen formas simples para que los consumidores se mantengan a salvo y se defiendan.

Así que la próxima vez que recibas un mensaje de texto o un correo electrónico en tu teléfono, piénsalo dos veces antes de involucrarte.

Esto es lo que quiero decir:

FALSO ESPECIALISTA DE FRAUDE BANCARIO

Cómo son: Los consumidores reciben una alerta de fraude a través de un mensaje de texto que parece proceder de su banco.

El mensaje les pide que validen si han hecho una determinada compra o han enviado una determinada cantidad de dinero. Después de decir “no”, el destinatario recibe una llamada de alguien que dice ser del equipo de fraude de su banco. El número de teléfono puede incluso parecer un número de teléfono real de tu banco.

Pedirán el nombre de usuario, contraseña o un código de acceso único del banco del cliente. A veces, también le pedirán al cliente que se envíe dinero a sí mismo o a un tercero para “detener” el fraude o recuperar su dinero. Una vez que el estafador ha logrado acceder a la cuenta de una persona o la ha convencido para que envíe dinero, el estafador suele interrumpir el contacto y el dinero de la víctima desaparece.

Bank employees won’t call, text or email consumers asking for this, but crooks will. If you receive a call like this, hang up and call the phone number on your account statement, the back of your credit or debit card or bank website to verify the authenticity of the request.

IMPOSTER SCAMS

What they look like: Someone will call or email you claiming to be from an organization you trust, like the Internal Revenue Service. They may threaten you by saying that if you don’t pay taxes or fees owed, they’ll bring a lawsuit against you.

How to stop them: If you think there’s truly a possibility that you owe money, don’t pay it to someone who initiates a call or email to you. Instead, hang up and call the organization in question directly.

GRANDPARENT SCAMS

What they look like: You’ll get an email from a grandchild (or other relative) saying that they’re in trouble and need money fast.

How to stop them: Call your relative directly. If you can’t reach them, contact another relative who knows them and may know their whereabouts and circumstances. Whatever you do, don’t send money, purchase gift cards, or share any of your personal information, including your banking username and password. Scammers use threats and try to create a sense of urgency to trick you. Always trust your gut and end communication when something seems off.

Al Dia: What should you do to stop scam artists?

Chandra Williams: There are steps you can take to protect yourself.

And while we’ve given this advice before in this newspaper, it is worth every cent to repeat in these pages. Here’s what we recommend you do and don’t:

DO:

• Educate yourself on the most common scams. Fraudsters will use anything to their advantage — claiming to be from the IRS, pretending to offer tech support, baiting you with prizes or cash winnings — the sky’s the limit!

• Monitor credit score for free with Chase Credit Journey — you don’t even need

• Review your accounts closely if you believe you may have fallen for a scam.

Click on suspicious links on emails or texts unless you’re sure it’s from a credible source. Only access your accounts through the bank’s mobile app or their website.

• Share personal information. Neither Chase nor any other bank will ever ask for your username, password, ATM pin, etc. when reaching out to you. Banks may ask for this information only when you call to discuss your account.

• Transfer money to someone claiming to be from your bank. Banks will never ask to send money via wire, check or other method to “stop or prevent fraud.”

• Pay someone using gift cards, especially when they claim to need them to remove a virus from your computer, stop fraud on your account or to buy plane tickets to come visit you.

Al Dia: What more can you do to protect yourself from fraud and scams?

Chandra Williams: One of the most effective things you can do to prevent fraud is to regularly monitor your bank and credit card accounts so that you can be on the lookout for signs of unusual activity.

Your bank’s mobile app can give you easy access to self-service = tools that let you track your finances 24/7. If you spot something suspicious, immediately report any concerning activity to your bank.

Many banks, including Chase, also let you set up account alerts to help you detect unusual transactions to your bank or credit card by sending automatic notifications.

If you’re not sure if your bank or financial institution already offers these tools or services, be sure to ask.

If you believe that you may have been a victim of fraud or scams, there’s no need to feel embarrassed or ashamed. It can happen to anyone. What’s most important is to take immediate action. z

Cómo son: Recibirás un correo electrónico de un nieto (u otro familiar) que dice que tiene dificultades y que necesita dinero rápidamente.

Cómo detenerlos: Llama directamente a tu familiar. Si no puedes localizarlo, comunícate con otro familiar que lo conozca y pueda saber su paradero y circunstancias.

Hagas lo que hagas, no envíes dinero, ni compres tarjetas de regalo, ni compartas tu información personal, incluyendo tu nombre de usuario y contraseña bancarios. Los estafadores utilizan las amenazas e intentan crear una sensación de urgencia para engañarte. Confía siempre en tu instinto y termina la comunicación cuando algo te parezca raro.

Al Dia: ¿Qué debes hacer para detener a los estafadores?

Chandra Williams: Hay medidas que puedes tomar para protegerte.

Y aunque ya hemos dado estos consejos en este periódico, vale la pena repetirlos en estas páginas. Esto es lo que te recomendamos que debes y no debes hacer:

LO QUE DEBES HACER:

• Educarte sobre las estafas más comunes. Los estafadores utilizarán cualquier cosa en su beneficio: afirmando ser del IRS, fingiendo ofrecer soporte técnico, engañándote con premios o ganancias en efectivo, ¡el cielo es el límite!

Chandra Williams: Una de las cosas más eficaces que puedes hacer para prevenir el fraude es supervisar regularmente tus cuentas bancarias y de tarjeta de crédito para estar atento a las señales de actividad inusual.

La aplicación móvil de tu banco puede facilitarte el acceso a las herramientas de autoservicio que te permiten realizar el seguimiento de tus finanzas las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana. Si detectas algo sospechoso, informa de inmediato a tu banco sobre cualquier actividad que te preocupe.

Muchos bancos, incluyendo Chase, también te permiten configurar alertas de cuenta para ayudarte a detectar transacciones inusuales en tu banco o tarjeta de crédito mediante el envío de notificaciones automáticas.

Si no estás seguro de si tu banco o institución financiera ya ofrece estas herramientas o servicios, no dejes de preguntar.

However, the struggle to afford the cost of a law degree forced her to switch to business. Her foray into education was sparked by volunteer work she did, reading books to Spanish-speaking students.

She began her professional career in

education in the late 1980s as an elementary school bilingual teacher with the Houston Independent School District.

She later went on to serve as an elementary principal, middle school principal, executive principal, school services officer, and assistant superintendent.

Hinojosa worked her way through the entire educational leadership system, and is now the first Hispanic woman to be named superintendent of the Spring ISD. z

After 12 years on the City Council serving parts of Williamsburg and Bushwick, Reyna went to work for then-Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, where she also made history as the first Latina deputy borough president.

Reyna is keenly aware of the importance of the state’s rapidly changing demographic and the need for Democrats to appropriately reach out to different communities.

“I cannot tell you how important it is for Latinos across New York not to be sprinkled as tokens across the Democratic Party when they feel like it. It is important for us to understand we are being heard and to have a seat at the table,” Reyna said in a recent interview with Capital Tonight.

She warned that certain groups of voters should not be taken for granted, or viewed as homogenous.

MAKE THE ROAD TO ALBANY

Beyond politics, Archila is a lifelong activist who founded Make the Road New

York, a prominent immigrant rights organization that has spread to have branches throughout the country.

In late February, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams named Archila as his pick for Lieutenant Governor in his bid for governor.

She is also carrying the activist spirit into her campaign, running on issues such as child care and housing costs, and addressing the rent and eviction crisis.

A Colombian activist from Queens, Archila gained national attention in 2018 for boldly confronting Sen. Jeff Flake in a Capitol elevator in protest of Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court.

She has also spent recent years working at the Center for Popular Democracy, a group that develops progressive organizing efforts, and has been involved with issues ranging from Starbucks unionization to campaign finance reform.

“New York should also be the place where everyone, no matter who you are or where you’re from, can live with dignity.

And right now, our state is falling short of that promise,” Archila said. z

Después de 12 años en el Concejo de la ciudad, sirviendo a partes de Williamsburg y Bushwick, Reyna se fue a trabajar con el entonces presidente del distrito de Brooklyn, Eric Adams, donde también pasó a la historia como la primera latina en ser vicepresidenta del distrito.

Más allá de la política, Ana María Archila ha sido una activista de toda la vida que fundó Make the Road New York, una organización de derechos de los inmigrantes que se ha extendido con sedes en todo el país.

A finales de febrero, el defensor del pueblo, Jumaane Williams, la nombró como su candidata a vicegobernadora.

Ella quiere llevar el espíritu activista a la campaña, con temas como cuidado infantil y el costo de vivienda, y tratar la crisis de arriendo y desalojo.

sions flourished, and she stayed for the next 33 years. In that time, she helped families from all walks of life get resources to help their children through school. Torres did so as part of a migrant family program, and then running a show on the Board of Education’s public access television station that publicized government aid programs.

Her biggest effort was to create the group East Camden on the Move, a collective of parents that gathered to demand more from the Board of Education and Camden City government on the whole.

It started small, but at its peak, had more than 100 parents joining the effort.

COMMUNITY LEADER TO COUNCILMEMBER

She became a leader and vital resource for her community, and government leaders began to take note.

“The lawmakers were looking at Marilyn. Marilyn wasn’t looking at them,” she said.

In 2010, she was asked to run for office, and given her community support, won an at-large spot as the first Latina on Camden City Council.

“I didn’t have to hurt myself to run for this, or beg people to run for this because they knew who I was and where my heart was,” said Torres.

Then and now, her heart is with the community. After almost a decade in the legislative body, Torres’ goal is to continue educating Camden’s youth and getting them more job opportunities.

She’s also already brought some of the next generation of Latina leaders in the city into government with her in Felisha Reyes-Morton and Nohemi G. Soria-Perez. Along with Reyes-Morton, Torres is a founding member of the #IMWITHHER coalition, which is bucking the Democratic establishment in the city. When elected, Reyes-Morton was the second-youngest person ever elected to Camden’s City Council, and Soria-Perez is the first Mexican-American to serve in history.

“We need younger people to run the city and bring new ideas,” said Torres of their presence.

Her message to any woman learning her story is to “reach for the stars.”

“The sky is the limit. Believe in yourself, don’t give up on yourself. You can be what you want to be if you really try,” said Torres. z

DE LÍDER COMUNITARIA A MIEMBRO DEL CONCEJO

Al convertirse en una lideresa, y un recurso vital en su comunidad, los líderes del gobierno se empezaron a percatar de eso.

“Los legisladores observaban a Marilyn. Marilyn no los veía”, dijo.

En 2010, le pidieron que se postulara, y con el apoyo que tenía en la comunidad, ganó como la primera concejala general latina en el Concejo de la Ciudad de Camden.

“No tuve que postularme yo misma, o rogarle a la gente que me apoyara porque sabían quién era yo y cuál era mi motivación”, dijo Torres.

Esa motivación fue y es la comunidad.

Después de casi una década en el órgano legislativo, la meta de Torres es continuar educando a la comunidad de Camden y conseguirles más oportunidades de trabajo.

De hecho ya ha traído a algunas de las líderes latinas de la siguiente generación al gobierno de la ciudad como Felisha Reyes-Morton y Nohemí G. Soria-Pérez. Al lado de Reyes-Morton, Torres fundó la coalición #IMWITHHER, que está agitando a la institución democrática de la ciudad.

Cuando fue elegida, Reyes-Morton fue la segunda persona más joven elegida al Concejo de la Ciudad, y Soria-Perez es la primera mexicoamericana en su historia.

“Necesitamos personas más jóvenes que manejen la ciudad, y que traigan nuevas ideas”, dijo Torres sobre ellas.

Su mensaje para cualquier mujer que conozca su historia es “apunten a las estrellas”.

his isn’t the end of Women’s History Month, for us at AL DÍA News, anyway.

Today simply marks the continuation of a series of celebrations throughout the year and an editorial agenda that depicts, acknowledges, and highlights the contributions of leaders in just about every single industry, regardless of their background or the color of their skin.

Each year, the world celebrates month-long observances. In most cases, these observances have been imposed by various governments, groups and organizations with the intention to raise awareness about an issue, commemorate an affinity group or event, or simply for the sake of celebrating something.

In recent years, however, these celebrations have been hijacked by an opportunistic Corporate America. Along with social media frenzy, these celebrations have become an opportunity for entities to exploit marketing campaigns to show their “pride,” Pan African colors, or colorful patterns that somehow represent the Hispanic culture — all which seems to only last about 30 days.

Many of these marketing tactics have been questioned in recent years as corporations show their true colors through their support for policies and/or organizations who target these communities.

Ultimately, corporations seem to just remember their employers of color during Black History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, or Hispanic Heritage Month as if our contributions to their bottom lines were limited to 30 days.

It’s time to talk about accountability and to examine the true motives and intentions behind these marketing campaigns. Let’s trade said efforts for equal pay, board appointments, leadership opportunities, and better benefits for employees. z

El día de hoy marca la continuación de una serie de celebraciones a lo largo del año y una agenda editorial que representa, reconoce y resalta los aportes de los líderes en casi cada una de las industrias, sin importar su procedencia o color de piel.

Cada año, el mundo guarda celebraciones que duran meses completos. En muchos casos, estas celebraciones son impuestas por diferentes gobiernos, grupos y organizaciones con la intención de generar conciencia sobre problemáticas, conmemorar un grupo o evento de afinidad o simplemente porque queremos rendir homenaje a algo.

En los últimos años, los intereses oportunistas del sector corporativo se han adueñado de estas celebraciones. Junto con el frenesí de los medios, estas celebraciones se han convertido en una oportunidad para que, con campañas de mercadeo, estas entidades muestren su “orgullo”, y usen los colores de la bandera panafricana o patrones coloridos que de alguna manera representen la cultura hispana —y todo esto solo dura unos 30 días.

Muchas de estas prácticas de mercadeo han sido objeto de dudas en los últimos años, pues existen corporaciones que han mostrado su verdadera cara luego de que se les encuentra apoyando políticas u organizaciones que perjudican a las mismas comunidades.

Al final, parece que las corporaciones solo recuerdan a sus empleados de color en el Mes de la Historia Negra, El Mes de la Herencia Asiaticoamericana y de Isleños del Pacífico, o el Mes de la Herencia Hispana como si nuestras contribuciones a sus vidas fueran solo de un mes. Es hora hablar de responsabilidad y de examinar los verdaderos motivos e intenciones detrás de estas campañas de marketing. Cambiémoslas por un pago igualitario, nombramientos en juntas directivas, oportunidades de liderazgo y mejores beneficios para los empleados. z

he month dedicated to women ends with a paradox that demonstrates the need for an egalitarian feminist fight: “The Power of the Dog”, a movie that talks about toxic masculinity, has lost in the Oscar Awards against Will Smith, who could not have been more graphic in his demonstration of what toxic masculinity is.

It would have been great if an Oscar had been awarded to the courage to change the western genre done by Jane Campion, who still won the category of Best Director — the third one in history! But if the Academy was not able to go that far, at least, it should not have applauded Will Smith’s speech.

The actor represents everything that the fight for equality looks to eliminate from our societies: violence as a synonym of his power, omnipotence, virility and the need to supposedly defend one’s honor. He, as if he could control the will and thoughts of the woman married to him, and about whom the joke was made, would set everything straight. Like many others, he proclaims himself as the protector of his wife’s honor, as if she were incapable of waging her own battles.

We women need that other men do not act as accomplices by omission. Those who chose not to criticize Smith because it could be understood as betraying an equal, legitimate that toxic masculinity. Can you imagine a men’s movement that stopped keeping quiet about the male chauvinism of his peers?

THE GENDER GAP IS SUFFOCATING US

Something like that would change the dynamics that we women are subject to, not only in cinema. The gender gap, which accounts for a difference of 72,4% between salaries of

LA BRECHA DE GÉNERO NOS AHOGA

Algo así cambiaría muchas de las dinámicas que sufrimos las mujeres, no solo en el cine.

La brecha de género, que muestra la diferencia entre los salarios que perciben mujeres y hombres, es aún del 72,4% en Estados Unidos y el país ocupa el puesto 53 en el ránking mundial.

Women who live on their own cannot afford to pay rent for the smallest apartment in all the big cities of the United States, whereas men can do it at least in a third of them. This data is from RentCafe. com, a rental search company did the report in 2017.

Facts are even more shocking on Latin women’s side: they would have to work 10 months more than white men to earn the same as them, according to National Women’s Law Center in 2020. That is, Latin women make 54,5 cents for every dollar that a white man makes. A bill to close that salary gap was passed in 1963, but obviously it is far from being met.

EXCESSIVELY SLOW CHANGES

There has been progress, but it has been very little. Research by Paula England, Andrew Levine and Emma Michel, from the New York University Sociology Department, analyzed equality between women and men in 1970 and 2018 and found that changes are slower. The only area in which women exceed men is university education.

In 1970, only 48% of women between 35 and 54 years old worked. This percentage increased to 75% in the year 2000. But it went down to 69% during the Great Recession of 2008 and 2009, and in 2008 it recovered only to a 73%. When there is the smallest of the crises, the first ones to suffer the consequences are women.

The pandemic has had once again shown similar results. It is as if we forget about equality when there is an economic, sanitary or war crisis. As if fighting for equality were something that we can only allow ourselves when everything else is working. If economy is going well, if we are healthy and in times of peace, only then can we remember women. It should not be like that. But ever since the seed of the Me Too movement was planted, a new feminist wave has come to stay. The data will eventually tell us. There is no going back this time. z

En 1970 solo trabajaban el 48% de las mujeres entre 35 y 54 años. Ese porcentaje se incrementó hasta el 75% en el año 2000. Pero volvió a disminuir hasta el 69% durante la Gran Recesión en 2008 y 2009 y solo se ha recuperado hasta el 73% en 2018. En cuanto existe la más mínima crisis, las primeras en sufrir las consecuencias siempre son las mujeres.

La pandemia ha vuelto a mostrar datos similares.

Es como si nos olvidáramos de la igualdad cuando hay una crisis económica, sanitaria o bélica. Como si luchar por la equidad fuera algo que solo podemos permitirnos cuando todo lo demás funciona. Si la economía va bien, si estamos sanos y en tiempos de paz, entonces podemos acordarnos de las mujeres. Y no debería ser así. Pero desde el germen que plantó el Me Too, una nueva ola feminista ha llegado para quedarse. Los datos nos lo acabarán contando. No hay marcha atrás esta vez. z
