uch has been said about the changing demographics of the Hispanic community in the United States. Latinos represent the largest and fastest-growing ethnic group in the country and one of the fundamental pillars in shaping American society.

Nearly forty-five million Hispanics live in the United States, representing 13.7% of the national population. This exponential growth of the community has impacted their participation in the social fabric and their presence and impact on the workforce.

While the U.S. workforce of a generation ago was whiter and older, according to government demographics, the nation’s workforce has drastically changed and is now defined by greater diversity. As the baby boomer generation retires, the powerful Millennial generation takes center stage.

In particular, in the energy sector, age is the biggest challenge, as workers and leaders approaching retirement leave in greater numbers than professionals venturing into the industry.

“About fifteen million whites are going to be out of the labor force age population between 2010 and 2030, and about seventeen million Hispanics will be new to that population, four million Asians and three million Blacks,” William Frey, author of Diversity Explosion and a demographer with the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program, told Utility Drive. “All of the growth in the future

ENGLISH labor force will be racial minorities, particularly Hispanics, and I think it’s important for people to understand.”

In 2023, whites will likely make up less than half of the U.S. population under age 30, Frey predicted in an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times.

Data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics highlight the changing workforce, with younger minorities and older whites dominating as the baby boom population retires and leaves the labor pool.

“If you look at the population in the U.S., people over the age 55 in the U.S. are 75% white. People under age 35 are 46% minority. So there’s a gap in terms of familiarity with the culture of the workplace. That needs to change.

Looking down the road five years or so, industries need to keep this in mind,” said Frey.

Casi cuarenta y cinco millones de Hispanos viven en Estados Unidos, representando un 13.7% de la población nacional.

Este crecimiento exponencial de la comunidad no sólo ha impactado su participación en el entretejido social, sino también su presencia e impacto en la fuerza laboral.

Mientras la población activa estadounidense de hace una generación era más blanca y de mayor edad, según las estadísticas demográficas del gobierno la mano de obra del país ha cambiado drásticamente, y se define hoy en día por una mayor diversidad. he Philly suburbs are getting a new grocery store. But it isn’t any old supermarket. Grocery Outlet Bargain Market wants households to understand they can eat nutritiously and still save money.

“We are more focused on finding bargains for our customers,” said Jack Reilly, the director of real estate at Grocery Outlet, told AL DIA News.

The grocery market chain is based out of California.

In addition to one in East Norriton at 2917 Swede Road, which opened on Feb. 25, they also have three other stores opening in the Greater Philadelphia area.

One will open in Mt. Airy on April 22.

Reilly and his team understand the importance of buying wholesome and nutritious foods on a budget, especially during this difficult time.

“We buy opportunistically, and we are focused on buying products outside of the normal retail channel,” he said.

“We also pass those savings on to our customers.”

A feature of its newer stores is also more targeted products serving more diverse customers.

“We do have products that focus more on Hispanic families,” Reilly said.

On top of the grocery store catering to different cultures within different communities, they also plan to hire locally.

“At this store, we are going to have 28 different positions that will be available in the East Norriton section,” said Reilly. “Once we open our other stores in the area, we will have more positions open.”

The store could be a potential boom for employment after countless locals lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. With four dif-

“We are also looking for Spanish-speaking residents, that will be important for our stores,” said Reilly.

Beyond providing natural and affordable foods to their customers, they also sponsor a local donation program called Independence from Hunger.

According to the USDA, in 2019, 35.2 million people lived in food-insecure households.

The numbers increased to 50.4 million in 2020 as a result of the economic downturn amid the pandemic.

The California-based chain raised $4 million in donations between June 24 and July 31, 2020.

Each store partners with a local charity it wants to support.

“We managed to receive the donations from all of our stores,” said Reilly.

They are looking forward to raising money and food donations again this summer.

Grocery Outlet has opened over 375 stores nationwide, and there are no plans on slowing down now.

“We want our customers to get the best deals that they possibly can, especially when it comes to essentials like food,” said Reilly. z

n a letter released on Feb. 22, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) revised its guidelines on the U.S. citizenship test implemented just under three months ago. It announced that beginning March 1, it will revert to the 2008 version of the civics test, which had been altered in December 2020.

The initial changes were first announced in late November and implemented on Dec. 1, giving test-takers little time to account for the changes.

The USCIS’s 2020 version of the citizenship test came with considerable changes. Previously, in the civics portion of the test, a USCIS officer asked a total of 10 questions from a general bank of 100 civics questions.

An applicant needed to answer six of

In the 2020 version, applicants must answer at least 12 out of 20 questions posed by immigration officials.

It was a change that garnered criticism for further politicizing the test and making it more difficult for applicants to pass.

The threshold to pass remained the same, but instead of studying 100 questions, applicants had to learn 128, making the process more complicated. Already riddled with backlogs, others predicted it would lead to further delays in the citizenship process.

As the Partnership for New Americans (NPNA) wrote in a newsletter, it was “condemned by advocates as a ploy to keep citizenship out of reach for those with limited English Proficiency and was criticized for being

ver since the fallout from Robinhood’s interference in allowing its users to trade GameStop stock freely, the ensuing legal consequences have been highly-anticipated.

In January, hordes of retail investors, inspired by the Reddit forum WallStreetBets and Discord groups challenged the stock market and so-called “suits,” upending the market by rallying behind the ailing video game retailer, Gamestop, among others, like AMC Entertainment, Nokia, and BlackBerry.

Tipped by investors at hedge fund Melvin Capital that were trying to short sell GameStop, app users on Robinhood, CashApp, and other app brokers drove up the price, starting a “short squeeze” of Melvin Capital, and resulting in big losses.

GameStop’s stock soared from below $20 in early January to more than $400 on the morning of Jan. 28, as an army of investors from Reddit, Discord, and Twitter went on a crusade to challenge Wall Street and hedge funds that had placed market bets that the stock would soon fall.

Then Robinhood interfered due to “volatility,” and it spurred legislators to consider legal action.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez made it clear on Jan. 28 that the situation was “unacceptable,” after the Robinhood app restricted users’ ability to trade, only allowing users to close out their positions.

On Feb. 18, the highly-anticipated House Financial Services Committee gathered the heads of Robinhood, Reddit,

For one portion, committee members focused on hedge fund Citadel and its “convenient” relationship with Robinhood.

Melvin Capital CEO Gabe Plotkin denied reports that his firm was “bailed out” by Citadel, explaining that “Citadel proactively reached out to become a new investor, similar to the investments others make in our fund.”

He then said it was actually Citadel’s “opportunity” to buy low and expect a return for its investors in the future.

Vlad Tenev, the founder of Robinhood, apologized for the situation, saying that a funding rule had forced the platform to block share purchases.

“I’m not going to say that Robinhood did everything perfectly and that we haven’t made mistakes in the past. What I commit to is making sure that we improve from this, we learn from it and we don’t make the same mistakes,” he said.

But committee members didn’t let up on their questioning, focusing on the danger to retail traders, who aren’t professionals.

Rep. Nydia Velazquez raised issues of transparency in short positions, especially from large investors and hedge funds.

Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) raised questions on the Robinhood use model, stressing that the platform may become highly addictive to users by design.

“I worry about the real-world impact of Robinhood,” Torres said.

“Robinhood has gaming features that seem to manipulate retail traders into making rash and reckless and potentially ruinous investments.”

he road to entrepreneurial success has been long and steady for Mike Diaz, a former veteran who worked his way up in the utilities world.

Reaching the summit of an industry in which people of color are in the distinct minority is no easy feat, and Diaz emphasizes the importance of helping others like him in overcoming barriers to success.

In an exclusive interview with AL DÍA, Diaz talked about his career and the learning process that allowed him to break the glass ceiling.

THE FUNDAMENTAL PILLAR

While enjoying a well-deserved vacation in his native Puerto Rico with his family, the Semper Utilities Founder and CEO reflected on his role as a Latino business leader in the predominantly white utilities contracting space.

“When I first started in this industry, it was 99.9% white. That is slowly changing, and I hope to help more Latinos and other people of color gain the skills to succeed in this business,” he said.

Diaz says that he grew up in a strict Puerto Rican household.

“If anyone has Caribbean parents, then you know exactly what I mean,” he said.

“My parents, along with various aunts and uncles, came here when I was a year old. Imagine coming to the United States in the late ’60s, at the tail end of Jim Crow, not really speaking the language, and arriving here with nothing more than a strong work ethic,” he said. “That is what my family instilled in their children: A strong work ethic. I am proud of that.”

Diaz says that it is those humble beginnings that led him to join the Marine Corps.

“I wanted to serve my country and to do so with a team that strives to always get the job done. As a Marine, you are the first one there and the last one out. It is a philosophy and way of life that has served me well in my career outside of the military,” he said.

After a stint in the Marines, Diaz sought his first job in the utilities industry — as a janitor.

“I interviewed first as a janitor and moved my way up to journeyman/lineman. From there I

Llegar a la cima de una industria en la que las personas de color son una clara minoría no es una hazaña fácil, y Díaz destaca la importancia de ayudar a otros como él a superar las barreras del éxito.

En una entrevista exclusiva con AL DÍA, Díaz compartió su trayectoria y su proceso de aprendizaje en una carrera que le ha llevado a romper el techo de cristal.

Mientras disfruta de unas merecidas vacaciones en su Puerto Rico natal con su familia, el fundador y director general de Semper Utilities, Mike Díaz, reflexiona sobre su papel como líder empresarial latino en el espacio de contratación de servicios públicos, predominantemente blanco.

“Cuando empecé a trabajar en este sector, el 99,9% eran blancos. Eso está cambiando poco a poco, y espero ayudar a más latinos y otras personas de color a adquirir las habilidades para tener éxito en este negocio.”

Díaz cuenta que creció en un estricto hogar puertorriqueño.

“Si alguien tiene padres caribeños, entonces sabe exactamente lo que quiero decir”, bromea.

“Mis padres, junto con varios tíos y tías, vinieron aquí cuando yo tenía un año. Imagínese llegar a Estados Unidos a finales de los años 60, en la cola de Jim Crow, sin hablar realmente el idioma, y llegar aquí con nada más que una fuerte ética de trabajo”, explicó.

“Eso es lo que mi familia inculcó a sus hijos: Una fuerte ética de trabajo. Estoy orgulloso de ello”.

Díaz dice que son esos humildes comienzos los que le llevaron a unirse al Cuerpo de Marines.

“Quería servir a mi país y hacerlo con un equipo que se esfuerza por hacer siempre el trabajo. Como marine, eres el primero en llegar y el último en salir. Es una filosofía y una forma de vida que me ha servido en mi carrera fuera del ejército”.

Tras su paso por los Marines, Díaz buscó su primer trabajo en el sector de los servicios públicos: como conserje.

“Me entrevisté primero como conserje y fui ascendiendo hasta llegar a oficial de línea. De ahí

moved up to a supervisor, and just kept climbing up that ladder.”

Diaz says that at the time, there were very few Hispanics in the utilities industry, but he was undeterred, thanks to the early lessons instilled in him by his family.

“My parent’s lessons in my head, their love in my heart, and my training in the Marines would not allow me to fail. It was this drive that pushed me to start my own business,” he said.

After years working his way up in public utilities, eventually earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree at night while working full-time, Diaz became an industry executive. But he wasn’t satisfied with being a leader in someone else’s organization, and in 2017, decided to become an entrepreneur.

“I wanted to create a business where I could create jobs for other young people from backgrounds similar to mine. Young people with lots of brains, dreams, and aspirations but perhaps not a lot of options,” Diaz explained.

“It was a dream, but not a comfortable one. It meant giving up a secure, cushy salary and a very comfortable life. I thought it over not once or twice but a hundred times. I had naysayers in my ear telling me I was crazy for even thinking about it.”

Diaz says it was the example set by his father, and the choices he had made in his life, that finally made him take the plunge into entrepreneurship. His own father became an entrepreneur later in life, and he followed that same example. He now hopes to help other Latino would-be entrepreneurs become successes, too.

Reaching the point in his career in which helping fellow Latinos would be even possible was a daunting task, sometimes riddled with significant financial challenges, Diaz said.

“When I started, these people thought I was going through a mid-life crisis. Many others discouraged me from pursuing such an ambitious goal, but my close circle of friends and family and I believed it could be done.

I persisted even when I was down to my last hundred and fifty dollars, and sold my personal truck to make payroll. Things got so lean last year, that I had to choose between buying the boys’ school clothes or buying groceries.” Last year but then the next couple of graphs says its a success?

Fortunately, says Diaz, his resilience, as well as strong relationships with leaders in the utilities industry helped carry him forward.

“It was this drive that pushed me to start my own business,” he said.

SEMPER IN THE COMMUNITY

Diaz started Semper Utilities because he saw a need in the industry to provide Harrison Brink professional, safe and cost-effective utility construction services.

Semper has partnered with PECO Energy and Concilio, a Latino social services agency in Philadelphia, to create mentorship and education programs to train the next generation of utilities workers — and eventually leaders, like himself.

These programs will train apprentices for trade jobs and help them pass certifying examinations, such as the CAST test.

Diaz explains that Semper, PECO, and Concilio will jointly administer the program, providing intensive support in building the requisite math and English language skills necessary to succeed.

“The program we have designed and will work hand in hand with Concilio on is an Apprentice Action Plan. We will have PECO Energy administer a diagnostic CAST test to the candidates, then we’ll review those results and proceed according-

REACHING THE TOP

While Diaz’s training and philanthropic work are admirable, so, too is his company’s success.

Semper Utilities is a leading utility construction company providing distribution, transmission, and underground services. Established in 2017, it secured its first project in 2018. Since then, Semper’s revenue has increased substantially. In 2019, sales were $4.5 million, and so far in 2020, sales have exceeded $20 million.

Semper is proud to be the Contractor of Choice (COC) for PECO, BGE, and Atlantic City Electric. Some of Semper’s other clients include Delmarva Power, ComEd, American Water, SouthernCo, NYSEG, Entergy, and more.

“We’re set for a record number of clients in 2021,” says Diaz.

Semper has recently opened a civil services division and is currently performing a major project for PECO. The company was just approved by American Water to perform this work, and also plans to expand into the Florida, Virginia, and New York markets with these services.

“A large portion of the work we have done this year is storm restoration – very challenging conditions. We’ve worked across the country — completing projects in places like Louisiana, Chicago, Alabama, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Long Island, Delaware, and Maryland,” Diaz explained.

Semper has been a self-funded venture since its inception, says Diaz, reflecting the inequitable access to capital that has often plagued minority-owned businesses.

“I was self-funded, not by choice but by necessity,” he admits. “I tried to obtain funding elsewhere but although I had great credit, a good education, etc., funding in the traditional arena was non-existent. I cashed out my retirement funds and followed my dream, because I felt making an impact in the Latino community was what I was put here for, it was my calling.”

Making that impact, and creating Latino representation in the utilities industry required Diaz to take bold steps.

“When I worked in the utilities, I always talked about making the workforce more reflective of the community it served, so when I founded Semper, I had to literally put my money where my mouth was,” he said.

A WORD OF ADVICE

After experiencing one of the most complicated years in recent decades, and as the company takes its first steps into 2021, Diaz reflects on the journey that has brought him here.

“My father taught me the value of hard work, and of helping others. That’s been a recipe for our success, and we’ll keep lifting others up as we climb higher ourselves,” he said.

“My team and close circle of friends have lifted me when I was at my lowest, and we wouldn’t be here without their collective efforts,” he said. “I also have Philadelphia-area utilities leaders to thank. PECO didn’t just tall the talk about supporting diverse companies — they gave us breath and life, we wouldn’t be here today without them providing guidance and an opportunity.”

As a final piece of advice to fellow Latino entrepreneurs, Diaz urges his trademark blend of determination and support for others.

“I would say never stop believing or working for your dreams. We were put here as leaders to create a path for others, guide, create opportunity and generational wealth in our communities.” z • 17

Díaz dice que en aquella época había muy pocos hispanos en el sector de los servicios públicos, pero él no se dejó intimidar, gracias a las primeras lecciones que le inculcó su familia.

“Las lecciones de mis padres en mi cabeza, su amor en mi corazón y mi entrenamiento en los Marines no me permitían fracasar. Fue este impulso el que me llevó a empezar mi propio negocio”.

Tras años de trabajo en el sector de los servicios públicos, en los que acabó obteniendo una licenciatura y un máster por la noche mientras trabajaba a tiempo completo, Díaz se convirtió en un ejecutivo del sector. Pero no estaba satisfecho con ser un líder en la organización de otra persona, y en 2017, decidió convertirse en un empresario.

“Quería crear un negocio en el que pudiera crear puestos de trabajo para otros jóvenes de orígenes similares al mío. Jóvenes con mucho cerebro, sueños y aspiraciones, pero quizás sin muchas opciones”, explicó Díaz. “Era un sueño, pero no uno cómodo.

Díaz dice que fue el ejemplo de su padre, y las decisiones que había tomado en su vida, lo que finalmente le hizo dar el paso de emprender. Díaz dice que su propio padre se convirtió en empresario más tarde en su vida, y él siguió ese mismo ejemplo. Ahora espera ayudar a otros latinos que quieren ser empresarios a tener éxito también.

EL IMPACTO DE SEMPER EN LA COMUNIDAD

Semper se ha asociado con PECO Energy y Concilio, una agencia latina de servicios sociales de Filadelfia, para crear programas de tutoría y educación para formar a la próxima generación de trabajadores de servicios públicos, y eventualmente líderes, como él mismo. diatamente en jardinero de Semper. También formarán parte de la reserva de candidatos de PECO para puestos vacantes en la comunidad, con el objetivo final de aumentar los salarios medios y el camino hacia el éxito de los trabajadores latinos y afroamericanos de los servicios públicos.

Llegar al punto de su carrera en el que ayudar a sus compañeros latinos fuera siquiera posible fue una tarea desalentadora, a veces plagada de importantes retos financieros, cuenta Díaz.

“Cuando empecé, la gente pensaba que estaba pasando por la crisis de la mediana edad. Muchos otros me desanimaron de perseguir un objetivo tan ambicioso, pero mi círculo cercano de amigos y familiares y yo creímos que se podía hacer. Persistí incluso cuando me quedaban ciento cincuenta dólares en el bolsillo, y vendí mi camioneta personal para poder pagar la nómina. El año pasado las cosas se pusieron tan flacas que tuve que elegir entre comprar la ropa escolar de los niños o hacer la compra”.

Afortunadamente, dice Díaz, su capacidad de recuperación, así como sus sólidas relaciones con los líderes del sector de MARCH 3 - 10, 2021

LLEGAR A LA CIMA

Si la formación y la labor filantrópica de Díaz son admirables, también lo es el éxito de su empresa.

Semper Utilities es una empresa líder en la construcción de servicios públicos que ofrece servicios de distribución, transmisión y subterráneos. Fundada en 2017, consiguió su primer proyecto en 2018. Desde entonces, los ingresos de Semper han aumentado considerablemente. En 2019, las ventas fueron de 4,5 millones de dólares, y en lo que va de 2020, las ventas han superado los 20 millones de dólares.

Semper se enorgullece de ser el Contratista de Elección (COC) para PECO, BGE y Atlantic City Electric. Algunos de los otros clientes de Semper incluyen Delmarva Power, ComEd, American Water, SouthernCo, NYSEG, Entergy, y más.

“Estamos preparados para un número récord de clientes en 2021”, dice Díaz.

Semper ha abierto recientemente una división de servicios civiles y actualmente está realizando un importante proyecto para PECO. La empresa acaba de recibir la aprobación de American Water para realizar este trabajo, y también planea expandirse a los mercados de Florida, Virginia y Nueva York con estos servicios.

“Una gran parte del trabajo que hemos realizado este año es la restauración de tormentas - condiciones muy desafiantes. Hemos trabajado en todo el país, completando proyectos en lugares como Luisiana, Chicago, Alabama, Florida, Pensilvania, Nueva Jersey, Long Island, Delaware y Maryland”, explicó Díaz.

Semper ha sido una empresa autofinanciada desde sus inicios, dice Díaz, lo que refleja el acceso desigual al capital que a menudo ha afectado a las empresas propiedad de minorías.

“Me autofinancié, no por elección sino por necesidad”, admite. “Intenté obtener financiación en otros lugares, pero aunque tenía un gran crédito, una buena educación, etc., la financiación en el ámbito tradicional era inexistente. Saqué el dinero de mi jubilación y seguí mi sueño, porque sentí que hacer un impacto en la comunidad latina era para lo que me habían puesto aquí, era mi vocación”.

Para lograr ese impacto y crear una representación latina en el sector de los servicios públicos, Díaz tuvo que tomar medidas audaces.

“Cuando trabajaba en los servicios públicos, siempre hablaba de hacer que la

fuerza de trabajo reflejara más la comunidad a la que servía, así que cuando fundé Semper, tuve que poner literalmente mi dinero donde estaba mi boca”.

UN CONSEJO PARA LOS EMPRESARIOS LATINOS

Tras vivir uno de los años más complicados de las últimas décadas, y mientras la empresa da sus primeros pasos en 2021, Díaz reflexiona sobre el camino que le ha traído hasta aquí.

“Mi padre me enseñó el valor del trabajo duro, y de ayudar a los demás. Esa ha sido la receta de nuestro éxito, y seguiremos levantando a los demás mientras nosotros mismos subimos más alto”, dijo.

Y al igual que su trabajo duro y su ayuda están elevando a otros latinos hacia la oportunidad, él tiene que agradecer la ayuda de otros, en parte, por la suya.

Como último consejo a sus compañeros empresarios latinos, Díaz insta a su característica mezcla de determinación y apoyo a los demás.

rauma is both personal and social. Everyone has wounds, sometimes so deep that they come back again even when you think they are healed. There are also inherited traumas — historical, ancestral, familial. Except for death, there is nothing more taboo in society than the expression of one’s pain and wounds - even though they connect us to others.

Roxane Gay does not like to be called brave for exposing her own experiences and struggles and turning them into a book. And she has done so on many occasions, displaying a talent that she masters with sensitivity, empathy, and large doses of truth. A radical act, yes, through which she has confronted us with our vision of feminism, with fatphobia and the social control of the body, with the multiple traumas that pierce us.

Roxane Gay wrote about the gang rape she suffered when she was 12 years old and how the wound leaves scars, how those scars, in turn, can become the engine of change through writing.

But it is not therapeutic writing, no. It is not a simple catharsis. It is trauma literature — not about getting rid of a wound (there are no magic formulas), but about using the writing craft to connect with others and expose what the system tries to sweep under the rug.

After teaching a workshop at Yale on how to write about trauma, Gay has just published Writing Into The Wound, published on Scribd, and is now also leading a 20-session course on writing for social change.

In an interview with Monica Lewinsky for Vanity Fair, Gay opens up generously and reflects on her traumas and writing.

“We are walking wounds, but I’m not sure any of us know very well how to talk about it,” says Gay.

WRITING “WELL” ABOUT TRAUMA

It is about connecting with the reader.

At least in Gay’s opinion, who believes that when writing about a traumatic event, whether personal, social, or cultural, you need to consider the audience you are addressing.

“For some people, writing about trau-

ENGLISH ma well means that it helps them work through something. But is that going to be writing trauma well for an audience?” she asks.

When Roxane published Hunger: Memories of (My) Body, the book she had the hardest time writing, she was addressing how traumas like the gang rape she suffered at age 12 run through people’s bodies and also how normalized fatphobia is in our society.

“The past is described in my body.

I carry it with me each and every day.

Sometimes I feel as if the past could kill me. It is a very heavy burden. In my history of violence, there was a boy. I loved him. His name was Christopher. His name wasn’t really Christopher, but I don’t have to tell you that. Christopher and several of his friends raped me in the woods, in an abandoned hunting cabin, where no one but those boys could hear my screams,” she wrote in Hunger.

Surprisingly, Hunger had an impact not only on fat people but on the relationship many of us have with our own bodies. “Being fat is not a crime,” she told Vanity Fair.

Even today, many medical schools are taking the essay into account to analyze fatphobia in the medical profession.

n trauma siempre es personal y a la vez social. Todas las personas tienen heridas, a veces tan profundas que vuelven una y otra vez aunque creas que han sanado.

También existen traumas heredados -históricos, ancestrales, familiares…-. Y sin embargo, a excepción de la muerte, no hay nada más tabú en esta sociedad que la expresión del propio dolor y las heridas.

Cuando en realidad, nos conectan con los demás.

A la escritora Roxane Gay no le gusta que le digan que es una persona valiente por el hecho de exponer sus propias vivencias y luchas personales y convertirlas en un libro. Y lo ha hecho en muchas ocasiones, haciendo gala de un oficio que domina con sensibilidad, empatía y grandes dosis de verdad.

Un acto radical, sí, a través del cual nos ha enfrentado a nuestra visión de los feminismos, a la gordofobia y el control social del cuerpo, a los múltiples traumas que nos atraviesan.

Roxane Gay escribió sobre la violación en grupo que sufrió cuando tenía 12 años y cómo la herida deja cicatrices, cómo esas cicatrices a su vez pueden convertirse en el motor del cambio a través de la escritura.

Pero no es escritura terapéutica, no. No es una simple catarsis. Sino literatura del trauma -no consiste en liberarse de una herida (no hay fórmulas), sino en emplear el oficio para conectar con los otros y poner de manifiesto lo que el sistema pretende ocultar bajo la alfombra.

Tras impartir un taller en Yale sobre cómo escribir sobre el trauma, Gay acaba de publicar Writing Into The Wound, publicado en Scribd. Y ahora también dirige un curso de 20 sesiones sobre cómo escribir para el cambio social.

WRITING ABOUT THE OTHER

For Gay, respect is fundamental. According to the writer, writing about a person implies a faithful commitment to their privacy.

“I never want to co-opt someone’s experience, and so when I write about the trauma of others, I just try to be careful.

I try to use common sense. I think, would I want something like this written about me? Because having had people write about me and do so in inaccurate ways, or just wrong, or offensive—I know how that feels,” she says.

ESCRIBIR “BIEN” SOBRE EL TRAUMA

Es conectar con el lector. Al menos en opinión de Roxane Gay, quien considera que cuando se aborda la escritura sobre un hecho traumático, bien sea personal, social o cultural, debe tenerse en cuenta al público al que te diriges.

“Para algunas personas, escribir bien sobre el trauma significa que les ayuda a superar algo. Pero, ¿eso sería escribir sobre el trauma para un público?”, se pregunta.

Cuando Roxane publicó Hambre: Memorias de mi cuerpo, el libro que según la autora más le costó escribir, abordaba cómo traumas como la violación en grupo que sufrió a los 12 años atraviesan los cuerpos de las personas y también lo normalizada que está la gordofobia en nuestra sociedad.

“El pasado está descrito en mi cuerpo.

Cargo con él todos y cada uno de los días.

A veces siento como si el pasado pudiera matarme. Es una carga muy pesada. En mi historia de violencia hubo un chico. Yo le quería. Se llamaba Christopher. En realidad no se llamaba así, pero no hace falta que os lo diga. Christopher y varios de sus amigos me violaron en el bosque, en una cabaña de caza abandonada, donde nadie salvo aquellos chicos podía oír mis gritos”, escribió en Hambre.

Sorprendentemente, Hambre tuvo impacto no sólo en las personas gordas, sino en la relación que muchas de nosotras tenemos con nuestro propio cuerpo. “Ser gordo no es un crimen”, dijo.

Incluso hoy, en muchas facultades de Medicina se toma en cuenta el ensayo para analizar la gordofobia en la profesión médica.

ESCRIBIR SOBRE EL OTRO

Respetando su privacidad. Según Roxane Gay, aunque es bastante común que, sobre todo en los medios, se hable de los traumas y las experiencias ajenas en base a especulaciones y sin tomar en cuenta que escribimos al fin y al cabo sobre una persona, el respeto debe ser lo primero cuando acometemos la tarea de escribir sobre alguien. Y, en todo caso, preguntar directamente a su protagonista.

DEALING WITH OTHERS’ INSENSITIVITY

In a society where the trauma of others often becomes “fodder,” an essay or a memoir about a painful experience risks being instrumentalized, blurred, or turned into “click-bite.”

Gay warns that there are no magic formulas for overcoming trauma. As life goes on, even if you have written about it, you find yourself “experiencing” it once again or making decisions dominated by your trauma.

This is exacerbated when, in publishing something so intimate, you come face to face with others’ insensitivity.

After the release of Hunger in bookshops, many media focused solely on how Roxane came to weigh 261 kg. This writer has also been inclined to this reductionism to attract the reader’s attention.

The author of Bad Feminist had weighed up all the bad headlines and snide remarks that could arise about her before publication, but you can never be too prepared for that.

However, she admits: “I have no regrets. The book has done more good than not”.

DON’T MINIMIZE YOUR TRAUMAS

Gay sees traumas “are great equalizers.”

We all have traumas, but we often tend to minimize them without thinking that an unhealed wound tends to get worse and cause us untold pain.

This was something the activist and writer learned while teaching the workshop at Yale that would inspire her essay Writing into the Wound when she saw how rawly and truthfully students addressed their wounds through writing.

Although she admits not to have emphasized it enough, this experience made her think how underrated a writer’s job is.

“So many people assume that when you’re writing about trauma when you’re writing about marginalization, oppression, whatever, anything sort of negative, that you’re writing only from emotion. (...) That writing is a job, and I’m not just doing it to exorcise my demons.

I’m doing it to elicit a response from the reader and to accomplish something,” she said.

BREGAR CON LA INSENSIBILIDAD AJENA

En una sociedad donde tantas veces el trauma del otro se convierte en “carnaza”, un ensayo o unas memorias sobre una vivencia dolorosa tiene muchos puntos de ser instrumentalizada, desdibujada o convertida en una anécdota por un periodista para ganar lectores.

Gay alerta de que no hay fórmulas mágicas para vencer un trauma y que conforme avanza la vida, aunque hayas escrito sobre ello, te descubres “vivenciando” una vez más o tomando decisiones dominada por tu trauma.

Esto se agudiza cuando al publicar algo tan íntimo, te das de bruces con la insensibilidad ajena.

Tras la salida a librerías de Hambre, muchos medios se centraron únicamente en cómo Roxane llegó a pesar 261 kg -quien redacta estas líneas también se ha sentido inclinada a ese reduccionismo buscando llamar la atención del lector-.

La autora de Mala Feminista había sopesado todos los malos titulares y los comentarios maliciosos que podrían llegar a hacerle antes de su publicación, pero nunca se está lo suficientemente preparada para ello.

Sin embargo, admite: “No me arrepiento. El libro ha hecho más bien que daño”.

NO MINIMIZAR TUS TRAUMAS

Los traumas, dice Gay, “son grandes igualadores”.

Todos tenemos traumas, pero muchas veces tendemos a minimizarlos sin pensar que una herida no curada tiende a agravarse y a causarnos un dolor indecible.

Eso fue algo que la activista y escritora aprendió impartiendo en Yale el taller que inspiraría su ensayo Writing into the Wound, cuando vio con qué crudeza y verdad los alumnos abordaban sus heridas a través de la escritura.

Algo que le hizo pensar, aunque admite que no logró destacarlo lo suficiente, en lo subestimado que está el oficio de escritor.

“Mucha gente asume que cuando se escribe sobre un trauma, cuando se escribe sobre la marginación, la opresión, lo que sea, cualquier cosa negativa, se escribe sólo desde la emoción. (...).

Escribir es un trabajo y no lo hago sólo para exorcizar mis demonios, lo hago para provocar una respuesta del lector y para conseguir algo”.

Por ejemplo, cuáles son tus límites y qué cosas no quieres incluir, por qué no hay que divulgarlo todo o cuál es la mecánica literaria que deberías seguir para hacer llegar tus experiencias, reflexiones, ideas… a los demás.

e could be witnessing the birth of a new musical subgenre that is just waiting for the world to open up for them after the end of lockdown because of Covid-19.

AQUIHAYAQUIHAY has been marinating over the last year of confinement, distilling their attitude as a band. The result is two EPs released in February that could mark the beginning of M-pop.

AQUIHAYAQUIHAY is a band of kids who came together in 2018 in Mexico City from other musical projects, most of them natives of Monterrey. They are Neqer, Zizzy, Nehly, Jay Lee, and Phynx.

ENGLISH The band is a work that takes from previous movements - Boy bands coming from K-pop triumph worldwide with many virtues of the subgenre.

In a recent interview, Zizzy explained the philosophy that has earned them so many headlines.

“We consider ourselves an anti-boyband because we are not prefabricated.

We’ve all been friends for a long time, and this is something we really like to do. Rather than going after money, or fame, we just like to create music,” he said.

It’s almost as if they have united the K-pop bands’ organized sensuality and

AQUIHAYAQUIHAY es precisamente una banda de jóvenes que se unieron en 2018 en Ciudad de México provenientes de otros proyectos musicales, aunque la mayoría son oriundos de Monterrey. Ellos son Neqer y Zizzy (que tenían un dúo

Como una buena herejía funciona dialogando con el estatus anterior. Las boy bands provenientes del K-pop triunfan en todo el mundo y muchas son las virtudes del subgénero; sin embargo no puede evitarse verse artificial.

Zizzy explicó a los medios la filosofía que les valió tantos titulares: “Nos consideramos una banda anti boy bands porque no somos prefabricados. Todos somos amigos desde hace mucho tiempo y esto es algo que realmente nos gusta hacer. Más que ir detrás del dinero, más que la fama, sólo nos gusta crear música”.

hy do Puerto Ricans spend their lives “bregando” — struggling — against adversity?

This is the question that inspired La Brega: Stories of the Puerto Rican Experiences, a much-needed bilingual podcast series created by Puerto Rican journalists and academics and co-produced by WNYC Studios and Futuro Studios that champions a shift in narratives about the island.

After all, who better than a Puerto Rican to tell the world about the problems on an island that is a U.S. colony and is undergoing significant political and social change?

Unpacking the struggle for independence and against the colonial straightjacket imposed by the US, indignities, La Brega’s protagonists underpinned the podcast with years of research.

“It is this word that we use all the time,” New York-born Puerto Rican journalist Alana Casanova-Burgess, host of “La Brega: Stories of the Puerto Rican Experience,” told NBC News.

“Why do we have a society and a government that asks us to be in “la brega” so often?” said Casanova-Burgess. “It has so many different facets because the term is hopeful in a way, but it’s also sad and tiring because, at the end of the day, we deserve more.”

Casanova-Burgess starts this series with Puerto Rican academic and Princeton University professor emeritus Arcadio Díaz Quiñones, giving some examples of the archipelago’s ongoing struggle: the closure of hundreds of schools, the expensive and dubious electricity services, the innumerable potholes in the roads and a crushing debt.

“Es una palabra que usamos todo el tiempo. ¿Por qué tenemos una sociedad y un gobierno que nos pide que estemos en ‘la brega’ tan a menudo?’, dijo a NBC News la presentadora de La Brega, la periodista puertorriqueña Alana Casanova-Burgess.

La periodista añadió que “brega” tiene matices de esperanza pero también nos remite a un desequilibrio de poder que sigue bien presente en la isla y que muchas veces no deja más opción al ciudadano que vivir con ello. Y, sin embargo, se merecen mucho más.

And it looks back — because the past of a nation is also its present — to tell us about suburbs such as Levittown, built in the 1960s as a carbon copy of the American suburbs; a failed experiment of “the American dream,” says the journalist, whose grandparents were among the first residents of Levittown.

The podcast also addresses the persecution using “carpetas” of those who fought and fought to change the course of the island. The “carpetas” were files compiled by the police with the help of the FBI over four decades. The “carpetas” documented the surveillance of those who advocated for the independence of Puerto Rico, as well as feminist organizations, trade unions, etc.

The Puerto Rican photographer and journalist Chris Gregory-Rivera illustrated the “carpetas” in a recent exhibition, the result of six years of research, which can be seen at the Abrons Arts Center in New York.

“There was not a fair opportunity for

Puerto Ricans to explore independence as an option because both the Puerto Rican and U.S. governments would not allow that option to be on the table. And now, we have to ‘deal’ with that fact,” said Gregory-Rivera.

But things are changing. Traditional parties have lost considerable ground, while opposition parties that favour independence and a different relationship to the US - not the colonial one - have gained substantial terrain.

These and other facts are dissected in the episodes of this podcast, along with the debt crisis, Hurricane Maria, the “struggle” to decolonize Puerto Rico and the question of identity.

The series will be broadcasted in English and Spanish this month. Some episodes will also be available on Latino USA and On The Media, Futuro Media, and WNYC Studios, respectively.

riters like the British Ian Sinclair made the art of the promenade an exercise of psychogeography — that is, walking through a place and absorbing its history to change our perception of the space. It literally immerses us in history.

From the more than 86,000 landmarks recognized by the National Register of Historic Places in the United States, only 8% represent African Americans, Latinos, Asians, or other minorities.

Specifically, in Los Angeles, just 10% of sites associated with women, BIPOC, or LGBTQ communities are landmarks.

Last January, in another effort to democratize history, the National Register added the iconic Church of the Epiphany in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles to the list.

The church, built in 1887, became the epicenter of the Chicano Movement in the 1960s and a refuge and space for the civil rights struggle. The building remains a pillar for the community today, half a century later.

“I cried because I needed a place as a Chicana and a place as a Christian to call home,” Angelina Lydia Lopez says, recalling the first time she visited Church of the Epiphany in 1968.

Ya que de los más de 86.000 sitios emblemáticos reconocidos por el Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos, tan sólo un 8% están asociados a afroamericanos, latinos, asiáticos y otras minorías.

Y, concretamente en la ciudad de Los Ángeles, tan sólo un 10% de los emplazamientos asociados a mujeres, comunidades BIPOC o LGBTQ se han convertido en monumentos.

El pasado mes de enero, el Registro Nacional, en un esfuerzo más por reescribir la historia y su impronta para que sea la de todos, sumó a la lista la icónica Iglesia de la Epifanía, en el barrio angelino de Lincoln Heights.

El templo, que se construyó en 1887, se convirtió en la década de 1960 en el epicentro del Movimiento Chicano y en un refugio y espacio para la lucha por los derechos civiles, y sigue siendo hoy, medio siglo después, un pilar para la comunidad.

Lopez was demonstrating on a picket line supporting Mexican American activist Sal Castro when UCLA professor Juan Gomez-Quiñones (recently deceased) told her about a party being held at the parish.

With its high ceilings and religious emblems, the interior was decorated with papel picado, and music from a mariachi band welcomed the attendees.

For Lopez, who grew up attending a Baptist church, it was the first time she saw her identity reflected in a place of worship.

Everything about the Church of the Epiphany harkens back to the golden years of La Raza. Its basement, now being remodeled into an activity room, was the birthplace of the La Raza newspaper, led by Ramses Noriega and Rosalio Muñoz, the main organizers of the first Chicano Moratorium against the Vietnam War. The Epiphany was also the site activists chose during Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign and the rallying point for organizing student walkouts to protest inequalities in East Los Angeles schools.

Activist and farmworker movement leader Cesar Chavez took to the pulpit and preached for social justice in that very spot. Years later, the parish served as a refuge for Central American immigrants fleeing violence in their countries.

“That’s the legacy of the church,”

its vicar, Father Tom Carey, told the LA Times. “It’s a place where people have expressed themselves.”

In fact, The Epiphany was among the few temples that loyally supported the struggle for equality when Latino Catholics complained about the Church’s lack of involvement in minority causes.

The parish has continued to hold its bilingual services during the pandemic, albeit virtually.

Meanwhile, it attends to local families in need of food and joins protests and calls for small business owners’ relief.

All this while undertaking a remodeling process funded by a crowdfunding campaign kicked off after learning its conversion to a historical monument.

What makes a place sacred “is what has happened there in the past,” concludes Father Carey. “What continues to happen there.” z

With a candlelight commemoration and a moment of silence, the U.S. President, accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and her husband, Doug Emhoff, staged the first truly empathetic event since the beginning of the pandemic.

“To heal, we must remember,” Biden said.

The new administration’s gesture marked a radical departure from former President Donald Trump, who rarely spoke of the hundreds of thousands of people who died during his tenure.

Last April, Trump predicted that as few as 60,000 people could die from the virus. That milestone was surpassed just days later, and today, a year into the pandemic, the numbers continue to rise. z

n Philadelphia and across the country, more people want the vaccines than the supply currently allows.

The United States’ federal government buys millions of doses each week from Pfizer and Moderna for distribution across the country. About 25,000 doses of these doses are sent to Philadelphia to vaccinate the city’s residents. That’s not enough to meet the critical demand.

The backlog has left for scrambles to get a hold of vaccines anytime and anywhere they become available. People begin lining up hours in advance at mass vaccination centers, such as the one that opened at Community Academy of Philadelphia Charter School in the Juniata neighborhood, hoping to depart with a peace of mind that has been absent for the last year.

In this endless wait, however, some begin to lose patience.

All this has led to questions about why more vaccines are not produced to meet the dire need. If more vaccines were produced, then people could get back to their lives more quickly, right?

Not exactly. According to a report from investigative journalism outlet ProPublica, “vaccine supply chains are extremely specialized and sensitive, relying on expensive machinery, highly trained staff and finicky ingredients.”

Opening a new production center and training the staff would take months and remove resources from existing lines.

This is necessary because these are materials that get injected into people’s bodies. The highest standards need to be met to ensure that the vaccine is safe and effective.

The same meticulous attention to detail goes into the approval process, which both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines passed.

ENGLISH On February 27, the Food and Drug Administration finalized emergency authorization for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Now an additional company will be involved in the production process, speeding up the rate of weekly vaccination.

In the meantime, there is little that can be done except to wait.

This applies especially to people that are not under one of the prioritized groups that currently have access to the vaccine.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health has added some clarity in the process through their vaccine interest form (https://covid-vaccine-interest.phila.gov/). Once signed up, a representative from the city will reach out once a dose becomes available.

The COVID-19 pandemic started in the United States a year ago. It changed the way we interact, the way we work, and the way our children go to school.

Too many have died, including beloved family members, friends, and community members.

The end is in sight, though.

Continuing to follow the CDC guidance of wearing a mask in public places, staying at least six feet away from other people, frequently washing your hands, and avoiding crowded places are necessary, though not always easy.

If you are in one of the prioritized groups, including people 75 and older, teachers and food distribution, service and preparation workers, you should consider getting vaccinated if you have not done so already.

It’s the best way to keep you and your family safe. z

Customers are notified of the annual rate increase or decrease by providing this notice for the annual GCR filing on March 1. PGW is requesting a projected rate increase of $0.6674 per one thousand cubic feet (Mcf) based upon a comparison between the GCR effective March 1, 2021 ($3.4687 per Mcf) and the projected rate in its annual GCR filing ($4.1361 per Mcf). This notice describes PGW’s gas cost rate request, the PUC’s role, and what actions you can take.

The GCR is designed to recover the cost of natural gas that PGW purchases from gas suppliers and does not include a profit margin. PGW Gas Cost Rate Increase PGW has requested an overall rate increase of approximately $ 27.3 million per year. If PGW’s entire request is approved, the total bill for a typical General Service (GS) Residential Heating Customer using 74 thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of natural gas per year would increase from $95.98 to $100.24 per month or by approximately 4.4%.

The total bill for a typical GS Commercial Heating Customer using 340 Mcf of natural gas per year would increase from $336.64 to $355.71 per month or by approximately 5.7%.

The total bill for a typical GS Industrial Heating Customer using 1032 Mcf of natural gas per year would increase from $1,008.38 to $1,066 per month or by approximately 5.7%.

The total bill for a typical Municipal Service (MS) Heating Customer using 1,131 Mcf of natural gas per year would increase from $999.21 to $1,062.15 per month or by approximately 6.3%.

The total bill for a typical Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) Heating Customer using 204 Mcf of natural gas per year would increase from $215.10 to $226.24 per month or by approximately 5.3%.

The total bill for a typical Philadelphia GS Housing Authority (PHA/GS) Heating Customer using 88 Mcf of natural gas per year would increase from $104.02 to $109.09 per month or by approximately 4.9%.

To find out your customer class or how the requested increase may affect GS, MS, and PHA bills, contact PGW at 215-2351000. The rates requested by PGW may be found in PGW Gas Service Tariff Number 2. You may examine the material filed with the PUC, which explains the requested increase and the reasons for it. A copy of this material is kept at PGW’s Main Office at 800 W. Montgomery Avenue, Philadelphia, PA, and can be reviewed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The PUC’s Role The PUC is the state agency that approves rates for PGW. The PUC will examine the requested rate increase and can prevent existing rates from changing until it investigates the request. PGW must prove that the requested rates are reasonable. After examining the evidence, the PUC may grant all, some, or none of the request.

The PUC may change the amount of the rate increase requested by PGW for each customer class. As a result, the rate charged to you may be different than the rate requested by PGW and shown above.

Actions You Can Take to Challenge PGW’s Request to Increase its Rates 1- You can file a formal complaint. If you want a hearing before a judge, you must file a formal complaint. By filing a formal complaint, you assure yourself the opportunity to take part in hearings about the rate increase request.

All complaints should be filed with the PUC before September 1, 2021. If no formal complaints are filed, the Commission may grant all, some, or none of the request without holding a hearing before a judge.

2 - You can send the PUC a letter telling why you object to the requested rate increase. Sometimes there is information in these letters that makes the PUC aware of problems regarding PGW’s service or management.

This information can be helpful when the PUC investigates the rate request.

La factura total para un cliente típico de calefacción industrial de GS que utilice 1032 Mcf de gas natural al año aumentaría de 1.008,38 dólares a 1.066 dólares al mes, es decir, aproximadamente un 5,7%.

La factura total de un cliente típico de calefacción del servicio municipal (MS) que utiliza 1.131 Mca de gas natural al año aumentaría de 999,21 dólares a 1.062,15 dólares al mes, es decir, aproximadamente un 6,3%.

La factura total de un cliente típico de calefacción de la Autoridad de Vivienda de Filadelfia (PHA) que utiliza 204 Mcf de gas natural al año aumentaría de 215,10 dólares a 226,24 dólares al mes, es decir, aproximadamente un 5,3%.
