want the conversations, dilemmas and dramas that I discovered on the border to be part of literary history and literary debates”. The words are from Sergio Troncoso, a Mexican-American writer interviewed by AL DÍA for this issue. His story and his approach have to do with what it means to live in the United States-Mexico border and share cultural visions and expressions. Troncoso arrived with his family to El Paso, Texas, when he was a child. Now he considers life there is better than before. In his opinion, education is the greatest challenge for Mexicans to prosper. “Education is the way to be able to defend yourself and your community as a citizen”, Troncoso says. Troncoso now lives in New York. He studied at Harvard and Yale, where he taught fiction and nonfiction in a writers’ workshop. “The border goes beyond the border in a story about who does or doesn’t belong to the United States and how finding your place in this world comes through finding the right person to be with you”, says the writer regarding the protagonists of Nobody’s Pilgrims, his recent novel. His commitment to what happens in that environment is even greater. Troncoso adds that, as a writer, “I represent the characters of the frontier that I didn’t see in libraries, schools and bookstores”. Since school he showed his devotion to writing, working as editor of a school newspaper.

Another of this issue’s stories involves Angela Val, who returns to Philadelphia as president and CEO of Visit Philadelphia, beginning in June. She arrived to the city in 1990 as a student at Drexel University, where she graduated from hospitality management. She began working at Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, now Visit Philadelphia. She spent six years abroad and now returns to a new position, with the responsibility of strengthening the tourism industry, of which she has undoubtedly been a pioneer. “As we emerge from the pandemic, I look forward to working with our partners to rebuild the tourism industry, revitalize the economy and restore Philadelphia’s vitality”, she says.z

“Q

APOYO A FILADELFIA

The Sentencing Commission hasn’t had enough members to do important work since 2019, forcing courts to rely on outdated guidance. The commission’s empty seats recently drew the attention of two Supreme Court Justices, Sonia Sotomayor and Amy Coney Barrett. In their denial of a petition for review of a sentencing dispute, the two judges highlighted the need for an active commission to resolve issues that have created divisions among circuit courts. “I hope in the near future the Commission will be able to resume its important function in our criminal justice system,” Sotomayor wrote. Among the diverse slate of lawyers is Judge Luise Felipe Restrepo, who is nominated to be Vice Chair of the commission. Restrepo served as a United States District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 2013 to 2016. Early in his career, Restrepo served as an Assistant Federal Defender in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania as well as an Assistant Defender with the Defender Association of Philadelphia. In 2014, President Obama nominated Restrepo to the U.S Court of Appeals for the Third District, and this nomination was recommended by both Pennsylvania Senators, Democrat Bob Casey and Republican Pat Toomey.

MAY 25 - JUNE 1, 2022

POLÍTICA COLOMBIA-BORN, LAW EDUCATED

Restrepo was born in Medellin, Colombia and moved to the states when he was two years old. He received his B.A from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981, and his J.D from Tulane University Law School in 1986. After completing law school, Restrepo served as a law clerk at the American Civil Liberties Union’s National Prison Project for one year, and then spent the next seven years as a public defender in Philadelphia. Throughout his career, Judge Restrepo often dealt with high-stakes cases. In 2005, he represented a member of a transnational criminal gang accused of capital murder, and was able to shield his client from a death sentence. In another case, Restrepo persuaded the government to withdraw its notice to seek the death penalty after presenting evidence of his client’s mental disability. As a Magistrate Judge and a District Judge, Restrepo helped establish the Eastern District’s reentry program,

ENGLISH which assists formerly incarcerated individuals with reentering their communities and leading productive lives. When he became a Third Circuit Judge, Restrepo insisted on continuing his involvement with the STAR (Supervision to Aid Reentry) Program. The program, which began in 2007 with only 12 participants, has expanded to 20 participants who meet as a group twice a week to discuss all aspects of their supervised release. In 2019, Judge Restrepo won the Champion of Justice Judicial Recognition Award from the National Criminal Defense bar for his role in creating and monitoring the program. Mary Price, general counsel of the group FAMM, which advocates for people in prison and their families, told NPR that the commission has been responsible for some of the most important reforms of the last decade. “These reforms have reduced excessive federal drug sentences for tens of thousands of people. Confirming these nominees to the Sentencing Commission can and should be the first step to building on that progress,” Price said. z

called in a recent conversation with AL DÍA News. He remembered he loved “listening to her violent and often heartbreaking stories of how people suffered in her rancho near Chihuahua. The family lore was that she had shot and killed two men who attempted to rape her during the [Mexican] Revolution. She could be vulnerable, kind, and violent all within a span of a few seconds, and I thought she was the most interesting character in my family. I often spent weekends with her, listening to her stories”. Author of eight books about immigration, Spanish culture, and the fact of being raised in a binational region as U.S.-Mexico border, Troncoso just published Nobody’s Pilgrims (Cinco Puntos Press, 2022), an adventure story about three teenagers, Turi, Molly, and Arnulfo, on the run from evil and unwittingly carrying an even greater menace in their stolen truck. “The border goes beyond the border in a story about who belongs in the United States and how finding your place in this world is about finding the right person to be with you. It’s a novel about the grit, intelligence, and luck of Turi, Arnulfo, and Molly as they face many

obstacles, including an imagined United States collapsing because of a pandemic”, the author explained. Nobody’s Pilgrims was written before 20 cases of COVID-19 existed in the U.S., and in a way, the novel predicted the pandemic that was to follow. “The pandemic in my novel is transmitted by touch, and I just thought about what would tear apart this country and set us against each other. My answer was a pandemic. The three teenagers, all outsiders, forge a community of three, even as many around them turn against each other. And that’s what the novel is about: how we fight to stay together, how we struggle and succeed in becoming a ‘we,’” he said.

A NOVEL FOR EVERYONE

Although many of his books deal with issues like immigration, borders, and Mexican-American history, Troncoso believes his work should appeal to

non-Latino readers if those readers are interested in the conflicts of love, the dilemmas of family between the traditional and the modern, and the debates about what should be meaningful in life. “I think my topics are often philosophical or psychological in nature, and so they should have universal appeal, but I always pursue them through the lens of immigrants or residents of the border, because that’s my community”, he said. Troncoso, who now lives in New York, where he taught fiction and nonfiction at the Yale Writers’ Workshop, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and received two graduate degrees in international relations and philosophy from Yale University. “Going to Harvard was an opportunity for me, and I took it,” the author said, when asked if he agrees with an education system that seems to leave behind minorities or kids with uneasy situations at home.

“My situation was hard enough: we were dirt poor, and despite that poverty, I did well in school. Part of that was the discipline my parents taught me, and part of it was also the teachers who helped me as I did extra work,” Troncoso said.

STORIES FROM THE BORDER

After Harvard and Yale, Troncoso won a Fulbright scholarship to Mexico, where he studied economics, politics, and literature. He was inducted into the Hispanic Scholarship Fund’s Alumni Hall of Fame and the Texas Institute of Letters, a nonprofit honor society founded in 1936 to celebrate Texas literature and recognize distinctive literary achievement, of which he is now the outgoing president. PORTADA Guild, the nation’s oldest and largest professional organization of writers. The idea of becoming a writer sparked when he was a student at Ysleta High School and editor of the school newspaper, the Pow Wow. “I thought I might be a journalist, but that’s as far as my ‘literary imagination’ allowed me. I didn’t know I could be a ‘fiction or nonfiction’ writer. I loved to argue and I enjoyed communicating complex topics in simple, direct language”, he recalled. He became a writer “to tell the stories from the U.S.-Mexico border and to represent the characters of the border that were not seen in libraries, schools

and bookstores. My motivation has never changed: I want the conversations, dilemmas and dramas that I discovered on the border to be part of literary history and literary debates”.

EMBRACING COMPLEXITY

For Troncoso, in the era of globalization, where borders are becoming meaningless and nationalism is on the rise, we all have a push-and-pull to choose sides all the time, between United States and Mexico, and between different political philosophies and ideologies. “I think the thinking person does not just choose sides, that’s simplistic and is

always fostered by social media to ‘like’ this or that. The thinking person creates her own unique self, her own unique side, and this is the essence of ‘nepantla’”, said Troncoso. When asked why should a Philadelphia reader, Hispanic or not, be interested in reading his latest novel, the author replied that any Philly reader would love Nobody’s Pilgrims if they’re interested in freedom and succeeding during difficult times. Regarding this, “The story pits Turi, Arnulfo, and Molly against problems they can’t control and problems they do control. They don’t belong with their families, and they are outsiders. Two of them are orphans, and the third is an undocumented immigrant. But they belong with each other. They are different from each other, with different values and perspectives, yet they forge a bond that allows them to risk their lives for each other. That’s how they survive. Troncoso believes that life in El Paso is better now for the Chicano or Mexican-American communities than it was when he was a child, but it is difficult to generalize this for the entire country, because each region is different. “I think what you have seen is a growing Chicano/a middle class, a community that is spreading beyond the border to other parts like the Midwest or New England or rural places where traditionally we hadn’t seen many Mexican Americans. I think that’s one reason why

sometimes you have instances of racism and xenophobia, because Mexican Americans are becoming more of the internal fabric of this country. The border is going beyond the border, so to speak.”

EDUCATION IS THE WAY

For Troncoso, the biggest challenge for Mexican-Americans is education: “We need to keep pushing the next generation not only to go and finish college but to strive for graduate and professional degrees. In my mind, education is power. Education is the road to being able to defend yourself and your community as a citizen. Education is a way to refine your voice and the way to be heard, either at the ballot box or in a literary novel. As every generation of Mexican Americans becomes more educated, you will also see a growing complexity in this community,” he said. As a consequence of this process, it will become more and more difficult to say “this is how Mexican-Americans vote”, or “this is what they think politically or culturally”. Troncoso is fluent in Spanish, both speaking and writing, as he lived in Mexico City for one year. Whenever he can, he has conversations in the language he learned from his parents, for whom he has great respect. “What I learned from my mother was to love reading and to keep to a code of ethics about how you treated people. She was muy católica, and I think that set of moral values was very important for her,” he said. z

THE WRITER’S LIFE Troncoso is the author of eight books, all of them in English: A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant’s Son; The Last Tortilla and Other Stories and Crossing Borders: Personal Essays. The novels The Nature of Truth and From This Wicked Patch of Dust. As editor, he is proud to have collaborated in Nepantla Familias: An Anthology of Mexican American Literature on Families in between Worlds, a book that brings together Mexican American narratives that explore and question the many permutations of living between different worlds. “I asked twenty-six writers to write new works (non previously published works), and I wanted them to focus on ‘nepantla’ in relation to families. ‘Nepantla’ means living between two worlds, two languages, two cultures, that ‘in-between’ place typical of many lives of Mexican Americans”, he explained.

‘Nepantla’, according to Troncoso, also tries to create something unique that combines languages and creates its own, or “create a way of seeing the world that resists the certainty that many insist on having about national identities, whether from United States or Mexico. That’s the Mexican-American experience”, he added.

LA VIDA DE ESCRITOR Troncoso es autor de ocho libros, todos en inglés: A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant’s Son; The Last Tortilla and Other Stories y Crossing Borders: Personal Essays. Las novelas The Nature of Truth y From This Wicked Patch of Dust.

AN ANNOUNCED FAILURE?

In her article from May 21st, Janaína Figueiredo states that “the Summit of the Americas leaves Joe Biden on the verge of a delicate defeat” and that “the United States Government is speeding up efforts to try to save the regional meeting which will be hosted in June in Los Angeles; the dilemma of the guests and the lack of a common agenda, the main challenges”. She points out that “at the Summit of the Americas in April 2018, held in Lima, the then President of the United States, Donald Trump, warned at the last minute that he would not participate in the event. Four years later, President Joe Biden is juggling to prevent the Summit […] from being a real failure. His final efforts include […] frantic negotiations by former Democratic Senator Chris Dodd, designated special adviser for the summit, […] to get presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Jair Bolsonaro to confirm his presence. Mexico and Brazil currently occupy rotating seats on the United Nations Security Council. The absence of both leaders at the Summit would be, at the very least, a delicate defeat for the US Government”.

SUMMIT OF CONTENTION?

In the main article of May 19th, the newspaper of Cali (Colombia) refers to the Summit of the Americas to be held in Los Angeles. It says: “Despite its importance, this scenario has not been as productive as expected. The reasons begin with the great differences of social, economic, and political nature among its members, continue with the ideological influences that, many times, impede a fluid dialogue, and culminate with the realities experienced by their people. [...] But there are also factors that divide, such as migratory trends caused by economic problems like those experienced in Central America or political ones like those in Venezuela, Cuba or Nicaragua, which leads to the creation of extreme measures such as walls to stop that migration caused by the need to seek a better or at least a more stable future. These are walls that reflect the drama of inequality, poverty and lack of opportunities”.

A MILD WEATHER IN CUBA

The editorial of the Madrid newspaper refers to the decision of Biden’s administration regarding Cuba: “they reversed some of the 240 sanctions adopted by Donald Trump in areas that cover both personal and economic relationships”, it points out in the publication of May 20th. Further on, it says: “The United States aims to issue 20,000 immigrant visas per year, it will facilitate the reunification of separated families through regular channels and allow ‘authorized’ American travelers to establish contacts with the island. The announcement also includes the promotion of the Cuban private sector and support for internet services, applications and ecommerce platforms in the United States, in addition to raising the maximum of 1,000 dollars [...] per quarter in family remittances and supporting donations to Cuban businessmen. […] The objective is to counteract the damage caused by Trump during his presidency, after the resumption of relations that Obama promoted in 2015 at the end of his term”.

LOOTING, MACROECONOMICS AND FTA WITH UNITED STATES

Economic analyst Aurelio Suárez presents a balance of what the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States has been for Colombia. “The neoliberals, happy: cheap goods, investments, etc. They hide that the deficit in the trade of merchandise and services and in capital income contributes to the red numbers of Colombia’s external accounts. The FTA with the US rigorously complies with the motto ‘Money goes where it can go’. The three negative items together cost between 6,000 and 7,000 million dollars a year, between 2 and 3 percent of GDP, which is 40 to 50 percent of the balance of Colombia’s deficit on the foreign front. That is the size of the annual looting of the FTA with the United States. Such a ‘dollar pipeline’ is financed with public debt, with a clear fiscal effect on the Housing and credit entrapment. It was not a lifesaver, but a stone tied around the neck. [...] ten years of looting of work, wealth, and national public and private savings”.

oinciding with Mother’s Day on May 1, Spanish singer Rigoberta Bandini presented to the world the long-awaited music video for “Ay mama,” the song that thrilled hundreds of thousands of viewers during her participation in the Benidorm Fest. Despite not winning the contest, which meant representing Spain in the Eurovision, the vindictive and transgressive song was a benchmark. Its unfiltered denunciation of patriarchy, in which the role of mothers in society is honored and claims like “I don’t know why our boobs are so scary” are commonplace, received accusations of alleged censorship. After the long-awaited music video of the song was published, several women who participated in the filming denounced the absence of real breasts in the video on social media, because “did not fit” for the director

CENSORED IMAGES

Illustrator Nazareth Dos Santos, who was invited along with other activists to help create the video, said that “they wanted to record scenes in which we showed our breasts to fight against censorship, both with the lyrics of the song and with the music video.” For this purpose, they recorded many “beautiful scenes,” with breasts of all kinds: large, small, with stretch marks, scars, small, medium or large nipples. Women of color, young or old. It was an exercise of “diversity and reality,” which paradoxically ended up being a victim of self-censorship. In her message, Dos Santos thought it important to expose that “sometimes things are not changing as much as they make us see.” On social media, she was especially uncomfortable that it was a male director, Salvador Sunyer, who decided that their diversity did not fit in a song that demands eliminating prejudices about female breasts. After the storm unleashed, Bandini kept silent. During the video, the singer and dancers appear half-naked and wearing body makeup, with constant allusions to the dedicated work of mothers feeding their babies. The director, who had total creative freedom, tried to “look at the woman as a creator in absolute terms.” For this, he composed a symbolic jour-

DELACROIX STYLE?

In addition, Bandini’s face appears as the central figure of the work, Liberty Leading the People, the famous painting by Delacroix that she mentions in the song. Nipple paintings also stand out and the censorship of boobs on social media is symbolically destroyed. They created a 3D image of the face of Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, as a metaphor. Dos Santos and her fellow feminists wondered: “If you can do a 3D with Zuckerberg’s face, why can’t you fit female breasts in the final cut?” She was especially annoyed that ultimately sagging or scarred breasts were not featured, and that the only real breasts that appeared were at the beginning, when Bandini and her dancers begin the choreography with their bodies covered in mud. In his defense, the director argued: “I know it is a very complicated and sensitive issue, but the decision not to include them has been mine and it is purely artistic.” He concluded: “Nobody wanted to censor anything, I decided that in the end it didn’t work with the rest of the clip.” Despite his explanation, it seems that there are those who are still afraid of boobs.z

¿ESTILO DELACROIX?

In order to recover the importance of a “a masterful reference on how to navigate between journalism and literature”, the Gabo Foundation, in collaboration with RTVC Sistema de Medios Públicos and Podium Pódcast, from PRISA Audio, has decided to publish a five-episode podcast to retell this universal story. “Fifty years later, it is still fascinating to read it and figuring out how Gabriel García Márquez was able to masterfully navigate between the waters of journalism and literature to give us a reference for our time. Because The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor is much more than the journey of the crew member Luis Alejandro Velasco on high seas. It is a captivating journey from journalism to literature that forever marked Gabo’s career: how he based his literary narrative on research, in the journalistic universe, his broadest and most important input, and the fundamental purpose of the Gabo Foundation”, said the organization through a statement to explain the origin of the initiative. The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor has a special relevance because it is the first journalistic book by García Márquez, until then a fiction author, opening a new stage in his literary career in which he fuses journalistic investigation with literature, giving rise to titles like Clandestine in Chile: The Adventures of Miguel Littin (1986) or News of a kidnapping (1996). “The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor marks an essential landmark in the life and legacy of García Márquez and vast similarities with the work and evolution of Gabo Foundation”, the statement added. “While this work goes from being a special report in a newspaper to be one of Tusquets’ best-selling books, Gabo travels from Colombia to a gray, troubled Spain, in the last years of the dictatorship, but in the which beats a feeling of renewal that translates into an exceptional moment for country’s publishers. It is in that Spain where Gabo connects with Latin American literature and where the boom began to take shape. That trip to Barcelona was crucial for the life of the writer from Aracataca, as it was the castaway’s journey”. The Gabo Foundation also stated that the investigation of the podcast was carried out by journalists Xavi Ayén, writer and journalist for Barcelona newspaper La Vanguardia, and Nelson Fredy Padilla, editor of El Espectador, “experts in the work of the Colombian Nobel Prize winner”. The episodes will be published weekly, every Thursday, and will be available on Apple Podcast, Spotify, Ivoox, Podcast and RTVCPlay platforms. z

It’s been a bit of a stressful year for everyone, and stress tends to reduce our mental capacity and focus. That’s okay! It just means we need to be intentional about maintaining, or regaining, our focus--and we have the perfect suggestion: •Track What You’re Learning This tip has multiple benefits. Harvard Health explains that novel tasks and information (learning something new) stimulate the brain and help keep it sharp and agile. Active aging evokes the idea of longer activity, with a higher retirement age and working practices adapted to the age of the employee. It also extends to the social engagement of the elderly in the collectivity. STAYING FIT

Let’s face it: as the weather gets colder, this year’s health and safety guidelines mean we’ll be spending more time inside than usual. If you’re someone who walks, runs, bikes, or hikes every day, you may be wondering how you’ll keep up your exercise routine through the winter. That’s where this active aging trend comes in: • Body Weight Training The advantages of body weight training cannot be understated. First of all, it’s always accessible, no matter the time of day or night, the weather outside, or the health and safety considerations in the community. With body weight training, it’s you making yourself more fit. Beyond convenience, body weight training offers the advantage of meeting your ability where it’s at and improving your strength, balance, and coordination based on your body’s unique needs. Try these five SilverSneakers bodyweight exercises for a simple, but effective, do-anywhere workout.

INTERNAL INSIGHTS

You’ve got the mind and the body taken care of, but let’s not forget your gut. What we eat has the power to give or take energy, and increase mental and physical wellness. One of the top trends this year (and the last few years) continues to be big, but also flexible enough to fit into your personal dietary needs: • Plant-Based Eating “Plant-based” has become a broader

dietary term that encompasses more than just vegetarianism and veganism. Plant-based eating emphasizes fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, and grains. For some, it means going strictly vegan, and for others it means simply reducing the amount of meat and dairy products they eat on a daily or weekly basis. If you fall into the latter category, choose a meal or two each week to “go veg,” or find ways to pack your meal plan with even more fruits and veggies. Benefits of plant-based eating include improving heart health, gut health, and mental acuity. Plant-based eating is also good for the environment.

ACTIVE LIVING

Active living involves all the ways you fill your time with friends, family, entertainment, and hobbies. While travel and large gatherings are somewhat restricted at the moment, the changes are allowing for new experiences. Try this new trend to keep active this fall: • Al Fresco Dining with Friends Many restaurants have expanded their seating areas onto sidewalks and streets. It’s a refreshing way to support local establishments and enjoy fresh air and community ambiance. Some are even petitioning for the permanent adoption of expanded dining areas. Make a list of places to lunch, and meet up with your friends or family outside for some good food and crisp, fall air. Active aging is an art, and the trends that support it evolve along with the times. Use these suggestions to help you keep your routine fresh and keep yourself fit inside and out.z

FROM PAGE ANGELA VAL’S HOMECOMING From pag. 6 |

Throughout her career, Val has developed into becoming one of the city’s most recognized trailblazers within the tourism and industry industry. Since the start of the new millennium, she has played an important role in just about every major event the City of Philadelphia has hosted, including the Republican National Convention (RNC) in 2000, the 2015 World Meeting of Families and Papal Visit, the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in 2016, and the 2017 NFL Draft. Whether it was with Visit Philly, the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau, or her current position with Tempest, Val has been a staple and esteemed leader across Philadelphia circles. As she prepares for her next stint with Visit Philadelphia, the city’s pandemic recovery is at the forefront of her list of priorities. “As we continue to emerge from the pandemic, I look forward to working with our partners to build back the tourism industry, reinvigorate the economy and restore the vibrancy of Philadelphia,

which is so essential to attracting leisure travelers,” said Val. She will officially begin her new role June 27, 2022.

REACTIONS

Val’s track record has made her a praised selection for this new role, as expressed by Manuel N. Stamatakis, chair of Visit Philadelphia’s board of directors. “With a passion for Philadelphia and a proven record rooted in collaboration, partnership and consensus-building, we are confident Angela’s return to VISIT PHILADELPHIA will accelerate the city forward as travel and tourism return in full force,” he said. Mayor Jim Kenney, who has worked closely with Val in her roles for the DNC Host Committee and PHLCVB, shared a similar sentiment. “I’m confident her commitment to collaboration and ability to develop strategic initiatives will help position Philadelphia for a strong tourism rebound after the pandemic,” he said. z

E

very member of a community plays a vital role. “Anchor institutions,” refers to institutions that utilize their resources to impact and improve the well-being of the communities in which they reside. By their very definition, anchor institutions must be focused on being the difference-makers, empowering their communities to address their needs. For Holy Family, our mission of educational excellence is the service we provide. At Holy Family University, with campuses in Northeast Philadelphia and Newtown, Bucks County, our service is educating the community to benefit the community. Our students and alumni grow up here, are educated here, and share their knowledge and life’s work to better these communities. We take this powerful promise to heart. These partnerships require strong relationships and trust, each of which must be cultivated over time and earned by action. At Holy Family, these connections are forged through transparency and communication of our shared values, strong visions, and consistency. Community members must be respected, seen, heard, and acknowledged, and should be welcomed into the “home” of the anchor institution beyond the business purpose, such as for speakers’ series, use of fields, art installations, and community outreach such as volunteer drives to benefit local organizations, as well as community events such as vaccine clinics, voting, reflection services and more. For an anchor institution, the community is its lifeblood, and conversely, members of the community must see themselves reflected in the anchor institution. The Holy Family community’s energy and inspiration are derived from those who surround us. There is a reciprocity of investment (time, resources, capital) between the anchor institution and its community. While other institutions might have had to remain stagnant during the pandemic, due to strong fiscal practices, we were able to continue with capital improvement projects, including a new

ENGLISH turf field, which employed many local contractors and construction companies. Over time there becomes a cycle of community members utilizing the services of, and building relationships with, the anchor institution, then going back into the community for work and service, which then contributes back to the culture and growth of the institution as well as the community. Recently, alumna Lisette Agosto Cintron was honored as an Al Dia Women of Merit. Having received a doctorate in education leadership at Holy Family University, Agosto Cintron is a principal at The School District of Philadelphia, continuing that cycle of service and education. Connective ties are broadened and deepened throughout the community with corporate partnerships, such as internships, providing mutually beneficial opportunities for local and regional businesses while developing connections for the participants. The focus must not be just on undergraduate education, but also certificate pathways and graduate programs to allow community members to continue to advance in their careers. While many of Holy Family University’s students come to us right out of high school, 40% of our students are over 25 years old. Lifelong learning is how we continue to break boundaries and innovate for the future, building up the community around us. At Holy Family University, we are so proud of those at our institution and those who surround us in our communities. They are the embodiment of our highest aspirations. They encapsulate why we get up each morning and give all that we have. Holy Family University is for the community and of the community, and this becomes the difference-maker in transforming lives through higher education. z Dr. Anne Prisco is the president of Holy Family University. Prior to joining Holy Family University, Dr. Prisco was president of Felician University and vice president at Loyola Marymount University. She was a faculty member at St. John’s University, and held senior leadership roles at Hunter College and Lehman College, CUNY. Dr. Prisco serves on a number of local and national boards.

muchos contratistas y empresas constructoras locales. • 39
