“My entire life has been filled with accidents, everything that has happened to me is because something else happened,” this is how Desi Arnaz talked about his success in an interview with David Letterman in 1976. Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha III went from being an aristocrat in his native Cuba to a poorly paid Singer and guitar player in the famous Xavier Cugat’s orchestra, in the 30’s, and later, to TV mogul in the 50`s.
Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman have the leading roles of the latest premier in Amazon Prime: ‘Being the Ricardos’. The movie tells the story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, the real life couple that played Ricky and Lucy Ricardo in the series “I love Lucy” in the 50’s.
The feature film narrates the crisis that they went through when Lucille Ball was accused by a gossip magazine of being a communist, something that in the conservative Hollywood of the mid-20th century would signify the end of one of the most famous actresses of the time.
Arnaz was the son of Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y Alberni II, who was the Mayor of Santiago de Cuba for ten years, his uncle was a chief of police, and his great-grandfather was appointed by Queen Isabella II herself as city Mayor in the XIX century. It could be assumed that his destiny was to continue with the Caribbean aristocratic heritage, had he and his family not been obliged to escape the island in 1933 during Sergeants’ Revolt, led by then Sergeant Fulgencio Batista, whom 30 years later would be overthrown by Fidel Castro.
Exiled in Miami, he became a member of orchestra Siboney, and later of famous Xavier “Mi vida entera ha sido un montón de accidentes, todo lo que me ha pasado es porque algo más ha pasado”, así resumía su éxito Desi Arnaz durante una entrevista con David Letterman en 1976. Y es que Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha III pasó de ser un aristócrata en su natal Santiago de Cuba, a cantante y guitarrista mal pagado en la famosa orquesta de Xavier Cugat en los años 30 y, luego, a magnate de la TV en los años 50. La película cuenta la historia de Lucille Ball y Desi Arnaz, la pareja de la vida real que representó durante los años 50 a Ricky y Lucy Ricardo en la serie “I love Lucy”. El largometraje cuenta la crisis que vivieron cuando una revista de chismes acusó a Lucille Ball de comunista, algo que en el conservador Hollywood de mitad del siglo XX habría significado el final de la carrera de una de las actrices más famosas de la época. Arnaz era hijo de Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y Alberni II, quien ocupó el cargo de alcalde de Santiago de Cuba durante diez años, su tío era el jefe de policía, y su bisabuelo fue nombrado por la misma reina Isabel II de España como alcalde de la ciudad en el siglo XIX. Se podría pensar que su destino era seguir con la herencia aristocrática caribeña, de no ser porque en 1933 él y su familia fueron obligados a huir durante la llamada Revuelta de los Sargentos, encabezada por el entonces sargento Fulgencio Batista, quien 30 años después sería derrocado por Fidel Castro. Cugat’s orchestra, considered to be the father of Mambo. That was how he started his way to fame. He appeared in movies and musicals in New York, started his own orchestra, made Americans dance to the rhythm of conga, and during the shooting of one of these movies he met Lucille Ball, who at the time was becoming a celebrity in Hollywood.
Arnaz and Ball got married in 1940. Each one continued with their careers; Ball as an actress and Arnaz as a singer. By 1950, they were both stars. That year, CBS offered Ball to take her radio series “My Favorite Husband” to television. She accepted, under the condition that Arnaz had the main role, but the network was not completely into the idea of having a multi-ethnic couple on national TV. Later they created “Desilu”, their own production company, so they could work together.
‘I Love Lucy’ became an immediate success, and its audience could reach up to 32 million people per week, a record in that moment. For more than a decade, the couple reaped rewards during the golden age of TV. After ‘I Love Lucy’ ended, in 1956, Arnaz continued working as a producer in series like ‘Mission Impossible’, ‘Star Trek’ and ‘The Untouchables’, and also in his musical career.
Their marriage was one of the most famous and turbulent of Hollywood, until their divorce in 1960. Arnaz’s infidelity and his alcoholism were as known as his talent and success. After his divorce, Arnaz got married again, and moved to Baja California, where he lived until his death in 1986, from lung cancer.
Despite the difficulties in his marriage, the couple kept a special bond. Once, Time asked Arnaz how he would divide in different percentages the success of ‘I love Lucy’ among actors, production, scriptwriters…He answered: “give Lucy 90%, divide the rest among us.”
The last person to talk to Arnaz, two days before his death, was his ex-wife, Lucy.
